Tomorrow will be the first day of Ramadan. The holiest month in Islam. A month which Muslims and Arabs fill with celebrations and festivities. Visits between extended family members, messages of love, desserts exchanged between neighbours, entire menus of authentic foods come to the table.

It's a sorrow above sorrow that we enter such time while Gaza is still suffering.

We received messages from Palestinians asking us not to share pictures of food and family gatherings as we do each year. As they lay there, starved, each family messing many members to at least keep them in our thoughts and prayers.

In my whole life, and probably in the lives of even my grandparents, we have never faced Ramadan with such sorrow and fear.

the only one in the group who manages to fast with little to no problem

kenny doesn't usually eat much food anyway, so hes all down

the hardest part for him is not being able to have 'dirty' thoughts or look at porno magazines 💀

the guys probably don't even notice that kennys fasting since they know kenny usually eat till you or he brings it up

♡ if you withhold from things such as drinking, gambling, swearing, etc. it honestly inspires Altaïr to follow your example and be more diligent in his practices too! He really admires you and the way you go about following your faith.

♡ a part of me feels like Altaïr lives the sort of life where he is a man of faith but he's very busy so it's not often at the forefront of his mind. But he's seen you making wudu and dua and it's really made him dedicate more time to his faith too and he's found that he's feeling much happier in following the example that you set for him, even without meaning to. He just loves you so much and admires so many things about you, he truly believes you bring out the best in him.

♡ Firenze is quite a multicultural city and he's well-travelled so Ezio won't ever judge you. He'll ask you about your practices quite a bit but it's only ever out of curiosity and so that he makes sure he doesn't ever disrespect you by accident.

♡ one of Ezio's ways of showing love is gift-giving so he'll make sure to find places that specialise in pretty and modest clothing so that he can still spoil you all while respecting your way of dressing and your comfort. He also loves cooking for you so he finds substitutes for where he might use alcohol while cooking so that it still tastes good but he's able to make a version without alcohol for you. He doesn't make a very big deal out of it though and just ends up eating the same alcohol-free food as you, it's a silent little way of him loving and respecting you.

♡ he's very intrigued to hear all about your beliefs and practices as well as sharing his with you! He was the one that repaired and renovated the manor so I can 100% see him setting up a prayer room for you. He wants you to have the space that you need and he consults you about it to make sure that everything is in order. He'll try fasting with you if that's something you do! He'll get up before sunrise with you to cook and eat and he'll join you in fasting during daylight too.

♡ running the homestead means that he's a pretty busy guy but he admires the way that you take time out of your day for religious practices and it makes him realise he should probably take a page out of your book and slow down every once in a while too so that he can partake in his own practices as well. He'll always provide you with whatever you need, you mean the world to him and he wants you to be well physically, mentally and spiritually.

♡ like Connor, he also renovates the place a little to make sure you have a prayer room because he wants you to know that he respects you and he'll always make room for you in his life - emotionally and physically. Also like Ezio, he'll find some substitute flavour for alcohol when cooking so that he can respect your beliefs. He even arranges for a new line of the café's sweets that don't include alcohol so that you have a full pick of the menu when the two of you spend time watching performances over treats and coffee together.

♡ Arno is absolutely a fashionista and I won't be convinced otherwise. He gets into learning about modest fashion so that he can still treat you with new clothes the way he thinks any man should do for his lady. Considering the time period, I'd say that a lot of his sources come from places like Morocco so he's likely bought you a kaftan or a few considering how the french ladies were rather fascinated with this fashion at the time.

♡ like with Ezio, Jacob's city had opened up to become a very multicultural place so he doesn't really bat an eye at you having a different faith to him. (I honestly headcanon that Jacob was likely baptised under the anglican church but he's not really a big believer, he focuses more on this life than the next). He does ask you questions out of curiosity though and because he wants to make sure he won't say something disrespectful out of a lack of understanding.

♡ he's watches you pray a few times just out of a simple fascination and curiosity. He once interrupted you making wudu because he didn't know what you were doing but he was quick to apologise and let you continue without interruption once you explained to him - he ended up buying you some flowers to say sorry because he felt really bad for having interrupted something that he knows is so important to you.

When you entered the restaurant, you found your friend, Gaz, already there with his squad. There was an extra seat on the table.  None of them noticed you until you arrived at the table and took a seat.

“Hi,” you greeted, looking around the table.

Eventually, your eyes stopped at the mask wearing man. You knew this would be the infamous Ghost and you just saw half of his face from the nose bridge up.

Your seat was placed next to him. Facing the wall. It might be because he did not want to be seen by the majority had he sat facing the other side. This way, you would not be able to actually look at him unless you turn your head towards him.

“Uh… this is my friend from intelligence,” Gaz chimed in. “The one I’m talking about. We can call—”

“Me classified because I just broke a bunch of rules,” you cut Gaz off. “I know who you guys are, no need for introduction.”

“You said you have information about the man we’re after?” the captain proceeded.

“Yes,” you nodded and put a file case on the table.

A pause.

“We’re about to… place our orders, maybe you’d like to order something?” Soap offered.

“Are there halal options?” you asked.

The men on the table exchanged glances.

“Elaborate?” Soap replied.

“Something that doesn’t have pork or alcohol. Or not cooked using the same utensils as something that does. Even meat is kinda complicated. I should’ve probably said vegan, it’s easier for people to understand,” you explained and ended it with an awkward chuckle.

There was another halt.

“Um… never mind. I’ll have water,” you said.

“I’m pretty sure I read salad on the menu,” Ghost said, eyeing Gaz as if to blame the sergeant.

“That’s my bad. I should’ve probably told them that you have a religious diet before we picked the restaurant,” Gaz said.

“I’m here to make sure that you’re being provided proper information before you leave, so food is not really my concern at the moment,” you said. “I mean, I could lose my job, but, sure, I’ll have a salad.”

There was a second where you and Ghost were looking at one another.

“So, what’s this?” Captain Price gestured at the file.

With that, you started explaining what you had. After hearing what you leaked, they were quite expressive towards how much they disliked your superior.

The squad started talking with you about your intel and eventually doing it whilst eating. It was hard not to keep looking at the man sitting next to you every now and again because he pulled his mas down whilst he eat. You made sure to give him his space.

By the end of your meal, everything was caught up and they seemed more eager to get their current mission done with.

Before leaving, the captain excused himself to take care of the bills. At the same time, Gaz left to go to the toilet. That left you, Ghost, and Soap.

Ghost tossed the car key towards Soap, telling him to ready the car. Soap eyed the two of you for the first couple of seconds, but took off anyway. When he did, you gathered yourself and was ready to leave.

You looked at Ghost and found him already looking at you.

“Halal food, you’re a muslim?” Ghost asked.

“Yeah,” you nodded.

“I picked the restaurant. If I’d known, I would’ve picked a different one,” Ghost said.

“It’s alright. As I said, I’m not meeting you to eat,” you replied.

Ghost only looked at you after that.

“Well, good luck on your mission,” you said as you stood up. “I better leave, too, else I’m gonna miss my prayer. Hopefully we won’t have to meet in this circumstance again.”

“Thank you,” Ghost said.

“It’s alright,” you said. “Bye.”

You had already stepped away when Ghost called, “Wait.”

Hearing that, you stopped and turned your head around. You stepped back towards the table. Ghost stood up.

“Under different circumstances, in a different restaurant, at an appropriate time, maybe you’d like to, uh… eat with me?” Ghost carefully asked. “I would’ve asked you for a drink, but I know I can’t do that, so—I mean, if you like tea or coffee, that’s….”

Ghost did not get to finish his sentence, but he saw you smiling and nodded once, taking that you understood what he was saying.

“Yeah,” you said. “Totally.”

“Great,” Ghost said. “I can get your number, then? Your name? I don’t know your name. Unless it really is Classified.”

“It is,” you chuckled.

Looking at the table, you saw a clean napkin and took out your pen. You wrote down your number and name as quickly as possible. You gave it to him. He folded it in half and put it into his jacket pocket.

“Thank you,” Ghost said.

“No, thank you,” you replied.

By then, the captain returned and witnessed the exchange.

“Everything alright?” he asked.

“Additional intel. It’s not that important,” you said. “I really wish you guys luck for this mission. Have a great week.”

“Good luck to you, too,” Captain Price said. “Don’t get caught.”

Lemon in a desperate attempt to stave off the Sunday Scaries, I am sending you this ask.

How do you think TK & Carlos remember Gwyn? What little rituals do they do together with Owen to honor Gwyn? And how do Enzo and Jonah participate?

And then similarly with Gabriel, what rituals do they have to remember him? (Assuming in the future after his murder is solved and everything)

TK, Carlos & Owen have dim sum together every Christmas Eve just like TK always did with Gwyn, as I wrote about in my Nochebuena fic! They order almost the entire menu, so many foods Owen doesn’t approve of, and reminisce over their memories of Gwyn. If their schedules allow, Paul and Marjan usually join! Also, after Gwyn passed away TK had a crisis when he realized he would never have her matzo ball soup again. Carlos revealed that before she died she’d given him her recipe so he could make it whenever TK was having a bad day and needed a little comfort. TK spent weeks practicing and perfecting the recipe, as demonstrated in chapter three of Eid fic. TK always makes the soup for his friends and family when he knows they’re sad or having a bad day. He brought some to Judd when Wyatt was in the hospital. He makes some for Marjan every Ramadan. Carlos gets it whenever he’s sick.

TK & Carlos fly to New York every year to spend Yom Kippur with Jonah & Enzo, when they break fast they have a huge spread of bagels and fruits and quiche and TK always makes his grandma’s lemon honey cheesecake.

TK & Carlos tend to Gabriel’s beloved sunflower garden in the spring and summer. As I wrote about in my Nochebuena fic, Gabriel was very proud of his sunflower garden and he had a fertilizing and pruning schedule and he also had a healthy war going with the neighborhood squirrels.

When Carlos was 14 Gabriel passed down the family masa recipe to him, and he is now the only person in the family who knows it. (Also in chapter three of Eid fic!) When Carlos and Andrea want to spend an evening honoring him, Carlos brings TK over and Andrea invites Tía Lucy and all the primos over and they have a tamale assembly party. Carlos always makes the masa. Then they sit in the backyard and eat and tell stories about Gabriel. TK sits very close to Carlos and holds his hand.

Muslim and Maghrebi Amis headcanons

So I said the other day that this fandom needed more Muslim Amis, if we’re writing Modern AU set in France. I don’t have much time right now, but let me try to put my money where my mouth is for a bit.

For context, my usual headcanons of the Amis are that Jehan is Jewish Algerian (his family moved to France after the independence), Feuilly is Egyptian and arrived to France as a unaccompanied minor, and Bossuet is Senegalese and got to France as an adult. Marius’ dad is Moroccan, but of course he didn’t know until he was an adult. For the time of this post, Grantaire’s mom is Greek.

Feuilly works at a kebab place. It is hell during Ramadan, because it means he has to work the entire day in a hot place, surrounded by food, without drinking or eating. His boss is Muslim too, so at least the minute sundown hits they close and go home to eat.

Another, less dramatic bad consequence of his place of work, is that he spends his days cringing at French people pronouncing the items on the menu horribly wrong. He sometimes slips and uses that pronunciation when speaking to other Maghrebis and he wants to die. Those words just have no meaning to him at this point. They’re just sounds customers make.

Jehan and Feuilly bond around speaking similar Maghrebi dialects. Also, the struggle to find restaurants that serve Halal and Kosher food. Jehan complains that it isn’t fair that Feuilly can eat kosher but he can’t eat halal.

Feuilly and Enjolras (and Marius, later) are always the designated drivers/herders of drunk people because they are the only Amis who never drink.

When Marius discovers his dad was Moroccan, he converts to Islam (his far-right grandfather is horrified). He’s very serious about it, he’s super diligent with his prayers. Bossuet teases him a lot about it, he calls him “imam” and “haaji” and he asks him when he’s going to do the peregrination to Makkah.

Marius immediately starts learning Arabic to read the Quran. Enjolras decides to join him, because it’s important to be inclusive, and is very frustrated to discover that Quranic Arabic does not help him communicate.

Bossuet can read and write Arabic because he learned in Quranic school as a kid, but he doesn’t speak a word of it (and if you take the vowels out he’s lost as hell).

Bossuet is not a practicing Muslim. He eats pork, he drinks excessively, the whole shebang. He’s quite unapologetic about it. That said, he does have a different set of “clean” social media for the people at home. One time Grantaire posted a picture of them having a beer at the Musain during Ramadan to the wrong account by accident and Bossuet almost had a heart attack.

The rest of the Amis end up picking random sentences. Courfeyrac one time said “ya Allah” in front of his parents and his dad flipped his shit over “bad influences”.

Grantaire is super into Ancient Greece, and whenever there’s a debate in the Amis about whether something is Greek or Maghrebi or Middle Eastern he ends up saying some variation on “you’re all Greeks, anyway”. If Feuilly tries to say he isn’t, he simply goes “you’re from Alexandria, shut up”.

And believe me, there are a lot of debates over whether stuff is Greek or not, especially food. It usually ends with Grantaire and whoever the other person was making the dish and bringing it to the Amis to let them decide which version is better. The others aren’t complaining!

Hi Tahyal! How do you think we should start preparing for the month of Ramadan so that we're ready by the time it comes?

Hi!

Physically : Build your nutrient stores, replenish your minerals (beef or chicken liver, bee pollen, oysters, nettle tea, fruits, well cooked veggies, coconut water), start an energy building practice (gentle movements associated with breathing techniques such as yoga or qi gong), optimise and heal your metabolism so that your body can actually sustain long periods of time without fuel (support your liver, I suggest dandelion root tea and hibiscus tea, consume more protein, support elimination and detoxing pathways : deep breathing, drink enough water throughout the day, ginger tea for gut motility, lime juice with water first thing in the morning, lymphatic drainage, hot baths and showers).

Spiritually and emotionally : If you can, do a social media detox (you can delete the apps off your phone and only check them on your laptop if there's the need), do a 4 week plan of what you wish to accomplish during Ramadan (example : study one Surah in depth per week : esoteric and exoteric aspects), Make a selection/playlist of the da'wahs and various lectures that you'll watch (I like to watch them during suhoor, I recommend Hamza Yusuf, and the Angel series by Omar Suleiman), write down your "transformation" goals for the month : how do you want to operate from now on? What do you want this month to bring you more of and which steps can you take towards that? (ex: peace, patience, greater capacity to love, etc)

And then you can make your own personal menu for the whole month, I love doing that, it eliminates the stress of guessing what you're going to make for iftar, it ensures that you won't eat the same thing multiple times, and its a great opportunity to try new recipes.

Pertama tama, Eid Mubarak untuk seluruh warga tumblr dan mohon maaf lahir batin! Semoga ibadah di bulan Ramadan kemarin berkah dan membawa banyak hikmah ya.

Lebaran ini aku ga cuti karena lagi megang kelas yang jadwalnya Rabu 3pm, terus Selasa 4.30am juga ada section. Mau izin tapi pas banget giliran aku yang presentasi dan ini silabusnya udah dikirim dari jauh-jauh hari jadi ga enak kalo dadakan batalin. Asalnya aku sama Adit mau lowkey aja buat opor seperti tahun-tahun lalu dan undang tetangga-tetangga buat makan pagi-siang bareng.

Ternyata eh ternyata undangan "open house"nya nyebar karena kebetulan tetangga kita pun banyak yang mahasiswa Indonesia kan. Karena kita udah lebih lama disini jadi kenal lebih banyak orang dan pas ngitung headcount siapa aja yang mau dateng jumlahnya berkisar di 20-30 orang. Yaudah sekalian masak yang rada banyak aja biar meriah. Jujur karena selasa-rabu ga cuti, jadi masaknya bare minimum opor sama ketupat aja gapake tambahan menu lain. Untung ada pressure cooker dan blender bumbu jadi masaknya ga begitu repot. Kebetulan hari minggunya Hamidah ngajakin bikin nastar (alhamdulillah!) dan dia yang bikin selai nanasnya. Luv banget senangg rumah jadi wangi mentega dan nastarnya pun enak!

Pas banget senin lagi ada gerhana matahari total lewat Amerika. Tempat paling deket yang dilewatin path of totality tuh Vermont, sekitar 3jam dari Boston. Asalnya ngajak Adit tapi dia gabisa ambil cuti Senin karena lebaran dia ambil cuti. Udah pasrah mau nonton di Boston aja yang partial EH kak diah ngajakin nonton total dia yang nyetir alhamdulillahh. Walhasil berangkat senin pagi, macet, nyampe pas banget lunch time di jam gerhananya. Jam 4 udah cabs balik Boston dan baru nyampe jam 11-12 malem wakaka.

Selasa kerja seperti biasa tapi WFH, jadi bisa siap2in rumah buat lebaran. Adit wara-wiri ke supermarket beli ayam, terus rebus ketupat, dll, malemnya kita bukber di SOCH buat takbiran juga. Kelar sekitar jam9 terus baru mulai kupas-kupas bawang dan blender bumbu opor. Sebelum tidur sempet bikin satu batch opor pake pressure cooker. Rabu pagi cetek pressure cooker lagi sebelum berangkat solat eid di SOCH. Alhamdulillah rameee ketemu temen-temen solat eidnya, ada breakfast buffetnya juga (tapi sarapan bule gt scramble eggs and friend). Abis foto-foto anak-anak meluncur kerumah buat makan opor.

Senang sekalii rame-rame makan opor dirumah berasa banget vibes lebarannya. Banyak yang bawa kueh jg dan nastarnya laku keras. Temen-temen pun datengnya bergelombang giliran gitu karena banyak yang ada kelas dan ada open house di tempat lain juga. By the time batch terakhir kelar makan, udah hampir jam 3 terus aku sekalian berangkat kelas.

Ngajar di kelas lancar lumayan (meskipun ga latihan sama sekali setelah bikin slidesnya). Inilah the power of kepepet ya. Kelar kelas diajak ke pub dan ditraktir satu tim. Karena hamidah dan listia belum kerumah dan makan opor (karena siangnya mereka langsung kerja abis solat eid), jadi kuundang dinner dirumah. Senangg rumpi-rumpi sampe malem terus abisnya aku tidur nyenyakkk banget kayak pingsan wkwk. Karena dari Senin udah kurang tidur dan selasa pun masak sampe tengah malam.

Terus Kamis aku ada meeting banyakk jadi ga bisa WFH. Ajaibnya bahan meeting-meeting tsb kelar loh, bener-bener dengan bantuan Allah. Sebelum berangkat aku colok pressure cooker lagi dan masak opor batch 3 buat dibawa silaturrahmi kerumah mba Dhini pulang kerja. Dari kantor langsung kerumah beliau, Adit yang bawa dan angetin opornya dari rumah. Terus dijamu rendang, sayur labu siam, dan ketupat lagi! Senangnyaa.

Jumat ini aku ga ada agenda khusus kerjanya. Mau grading esay mahasiswa sama lanjut nulis draft paper aja jadi agak santay. Bener-bener stay di kasur sampe jam 9-10 kali terus sarapan pastry yang dibawain neta sama teh panas. Alhamdulillah nikmat bangett bisa chill spt ini setelah seminggu hectic. Tapi walau sibuk seperti itu alhamdulillah semua lancar! Perfect weather pun hangat dan tidak berawan jadi vibesnya beneran celebratory banget. Luvv.
