Ramadan Food Walk at Mohammed Ali Road: Tips, favourites & what to eat

It's the month of Ramadan and when it's past sunset, Mohammed Ali Road in Mumbai comes into its own; filled with all kinds of Iftar special food and people savouring it. Going to Mohammed Ali Road with friends has turned into an annual tradition that has been going on for years now. This time around, our Mumbai team hit the road (so to speak) and chowed down some seriously delicious food. Lit up street with more food than you can imagine and the variety was quite astounding. From mawa jalebi to sweet idli to kebabs, there were traditional dishes as well new ones to try at many stalls on the street. And we have everything you need right here.

Bade Miya Stall

Tasty fact - The Bade Miya folks have been setting up their stall on Mohammed Ali Road since 1947. What we ate - Chicken soup, chicken tikka masala with pao Verdict - The chicken soup was the winner because the rest of the dishes had better versions in other stalls. Average cost for two - ₹350 Burhanpur Jalebi Centre

Tasty fact - They sell anywhere between 60 kg to 90 kg of jalebi everyday. What we ate - Mawa jalebi Verdict - This Ramadan special jalebi in Mumbai is sweeter and crispier than it's bright yellow hued counterpart, the regular jalebi. And it's the best dessert on the lane. Average cost for two - ₹30/100 gm Hyderabadi Badaami Haleem Stall

Tasty fact - The haleem here is made from goat meat and is cooked for 12-13 hours with 60 kinds of spices before they add all the dried fruits and stewed for another 3 hours. What we ate - Badaami haleem Verdict - The haleem was unlike the Mumbai style one. It was creamy, rich and not spicy, served with fried onions and lemon. Don't get the big box if you plan to eat at other stalls! Average cost for two - ₹100 Idli Sweet Stall

Tasty fact - At ₹20 a pop he sells enough to make him ₹8000 per day. What we ate - Idli topped with "milk juice" and dried fruits. Verdict - It's quite a unique dessert that's mildly sweet that balances out well with the saltiness of the idli. Average cost for two - ₹40

Daal Haleem Stall

Tasty fact - The haleem here is made with goat meat along with goat liver, its tongue and lots of chillies. What we ate - Since we already had the haleem we tried the mutton soup. Verdict - Perfect to be had at the beginning of the walk because it's quite light, fragrant and full of great mutton flavour. Average cost for two - ₹60

La Rabib Fast Food

Tasty fact - Liver masala goes great with baida roti. What we ate - Baida roti Verdict - A Kolkata specialty, the baida roti is stuffed with keema, dipped in egg and deep fried. Not for the faint hearted as you can see! Average cost for two - ₹100

Chinese N Grill

Tasty fact - Must haves here are the bheja fry and the gurda fry masala. What we ate - Mutton nihari, mutton chaap and roomali roti Verdict - Ideal for a sit down meal and the nihari is not to be missed. Average cost for two - ₹900

Mashalla Cuisine

Tasty fact - Here's where you'll find the biggest line of seekh kebabs being grilled together. What we ate - Kebabs Verdict - They were just like any other good kebabs you get all year round. You can give it a miss if you want to try out other new things. Average cost for two - ₹100

Sulaeiman Usmaan Mithaiwala

Tasty fact - They make around 700 to 800 different kinds of sweets all year and only 10 kinds only during Ramadan. What did we eat - Firni, rabri, malpua and aflatoon Verdict - Save this place for last. The sweets aren't too sugary, making them easier to eat. The malpua is very rich. The firni and rabri are not be missed. Average cost fort two - ₹150

ZamZam

Tasty fact - Having been popular for years for their baked goods, ZamZam serves only chilled sherbets on Mohammad Ali Road every year during Ramadan. What did we eat - Rose sherbet Verdict - A refreshing end to a fulfilling food walk. Order 1 glass for 3-4 people. Average cost for two - ₹40

Lastly, things to keep in mind while planning a walk here: - Carry cash. - Parking is a problem but you can park at Pydhonie Police Station or near Police Headquarters. - Don't be in a rush. It takes time for them to take your order and bring your food to you. - Best time to go there is post 8 PM - Skip the shawarma stalls because you don't want to fill up on something you'll easily find anywhere else. - If you want to try the food at the Surti Barah Handi stalls reach the place by 7 PM so you can have all the slow cooked meat. - There are way too many people here so be aware of your belongings. - Carrying huge cameras and their bags will be an inconvenience. - Most importantly, make room for all the food you're going to eat!
