‘‘Twas a lovely evening going back to @charterhousesch with some friends for a fantastic concert by the Charterhouse School Choir and the @brittensinfonia1 which is part of the 150th birth anniversary of Ralph Vaughan Williams. Absolutely amazing to hear it in the amazing Charterhouse Memorial Chapel acoustics and to hear the lovely Harrison & Harrison pipe organ I once used to play 😊. I do love going back to the old school. Looking forward to going back again soon 😊💜 #CharterhouseSchool #Godalming #OldSchool #OldCarthusian #OC #OldBoy #OldSchool #Alumnus #Music #Concert #RVW #RalphVaughanWilliams #CharterhouseMemorialChapel #LargestWarMemorialinEngland #FavouritePlace #PreviousHome (at Charterhouse School) https://www.instagram.com/p/CbUmDgiKAha/?utm_medium=tumblr

Two real-life adventure books: Apsley Cherry-Garrard's account of the Second Expedition to the South Pole with Capt. Robert Falcon Scott & crew. Since Cherry-Garrard (what a name) never went the Final Journey, his book supplements what Captain Scott's tragically cannot. Going to also recommend the beautifully photographed 1948 movie "Scott of the Antarctic" starring John Mills as Scott. Some initial phony soundstages/backgrounds give way to superb cinematography. The acting is very stiff upper, stoic and only stubbornly morose - but it does the real men justice, I think. Soundtrack by Ralph Vaughan Williams is top ten film scores of all time (my list). #robertfalconscott #robertscott #captainscott #antarctica #thesouthpole #apsleycherrygarrard #theworstjourneyintheworld #exploration #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #scottoftheantarctic #ralphvaughanwilliams #johnmills (at Nashville, Tennessee) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bu6S404g9jO/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=4gmu82zhv56

THE LOVES OF JOANNA GODDEN (Dir: Charles Frend, 1947). I will admit to knowing little about movie number 12 before watching. Yet The Loves of Joanna Godden is an Ealing Studios production of some pedigree, with a screenplay by H E Bates and music by Ralph Vaughan Williams. Somewhat atypical of Ealing, Joanna Godden is a romantic period piece starring Googie Withers as a young woman who inherits a sheep farm and is determined to make it a success without the aid of a husband. This proto-feminist plot is unusual in post-war British cinema and especially so from Ealing whose protagonists are almost always men. This is certainly to be commended. As is the beautiful Romney Marsh locales and the realistic depiction of the devastation caused by an outbreak of foot and mouth disease. It is perhaps here where Joanna Godden most belies its Ealing roots as the studio was paramount in the British documentary and social-realist movement. Watching Miss Withers juggle the duel concerns of lambing and of finding or fending off potential suitors is not exactly thrilling; yet the film is enjoyable and worth a watch as an unusual release from the years when Ealing was at the peak of its powers. 100+ movie reviews now available on my blog jinglebonesmovietime.blogspot.com

New #composition project. Trying to get visual ideas to relate to this poem from Songs of Travel by Robert Louis Stevenson. He originally wrote about 46 (less than half published). Ralph Vaughan Williams set 9 to piano/vocal art songs. My goal is to set it to the same instrumentation while staying as true as I can to Williams' style. #piano #music #ralphvaughanwilliams #robertlouisstevenson #songcycle #songsoftravel #thevagabond

On the morning we began removing the pipe organ at Mogadore Christian, I put power to it and played a couple songs. Despite not having been tuned for several years it sang out with the sweet old sound that lead the congregation for so many years. A few dodgy notes but a good organ to play. Here's a bit of the hymntune #KINGSFOLD. You can hear it complete on my YouTube. #Mogadore #bittersweet #ralphvaughanwilliams #pipeorgan #brianebiepipeorganservice (at Mogadore Christian Church)
