Evening is coming at Portland Row. George has nipped out to the corner shop to get some doughnuts, forgetting to shut the door behind him. Lucy is in the basement, practising with her rapier. Lockwood is reluctantly finishing some paperwork in the library. In a few minutes, they’ll meet in the kitchen and put the kettle on. Just for a moment, the house is quiet, the hall is still. Fancy a peek inside Portland Row? On 26th August 2021, I paid a visit to @ealingstudios, where Lockwood’s house had been lovingly created by Marcus Rowland, @sophiehpowell, and the amazing team at @completefictionpictures. It was an incredible feeling, stepping through the front door for the first time. @mrjoecornish was still shooting on location, so Portland Row had not yet been filmed in. It was sitting quietly, just waiting for @rubystokess, @cameronchapman__ and @alihadjiheshmati to drop by and take possession. The amazing thing for me was how close it was to the house I saw in my head: the accuracy was unbelievable. Here you can see: the front hall, with all the masks and the crystal skull lamp on the table; a peep through into the sitting room, where Lucy will soon have her fateful interview; the view down to the upstairs landing (I am taking the photo from just outside THE MYSTERIOUS LOCKED DOOR); and a nice shot of George’s bedroom, thankfully with no one doing naked yoga. Note the ladder: some parts of the house were still being finished as I went round. It was an incredible feat of design and construction, a testament to the vision of Joe and the film-makers, and an honour to be able to visit it. #lockwoodandco @netflixuk @netflix

THE LOVES OF JOANNA GODDEN (Dir: Charles Frend, 1947). I will admit to knowing little about movie number 12 before watching. Yet The Loves of Joanna Godden is an Ealing Studios production of some pedigree, with a screenplay by H E Bates and music by Ralph Vaughan Williams. Somewhat atypical of Ealing, Joanna Godden is a romantic period piece starring Googie Withers as a young woman who inherits a sheep farm and is determined to make it a success without the aid of a husband. This proto-feminist plot is unusual in post-war British cinema and especially so from Ealing whose protagonists are almost always men. This is certainly to be commended. As is the beautiful Romney Marsh locales and the realistic depiction of the devastation caused by an outbreak of foot and mouth disease. It is perhaps here where Joanna Godden most belies its Ealing roots as the studio was paramount in the British documentary and social-realist movement. Watching Miss Withers juggle the duel concerns of lambing and of finding or fending off potential suitors is not exactly thrilling; yet the film is enjoyable and worth a watch as an unusual release from the years when Ealing was at the peak of its powers. 100+ movie reviews now available on my blog jinglebonesmovietime.blogspot.com

Is ‘Kind Heart’s and Coronets’ the best British comedy film ever? It’s certainly in the running. Seeing the 70th anniversary reissue (in London with my clergy Amigos @holyravi & @mackthevicar) reminded me of just how good it is. With the darkest of comedy plots and driest of witty dialogue this skewering of British snobbery is a masterclass in subtle satire which, like a rich vintage wine, just gets better with age. Its performances have rarely been bettered – Denis Price is perfect in this his greatest role and is beautifully supported by the plummy, feline Joan Greenwood. But Price is matched and more by the 34-year-old Alec Guinness’s astoundingly effective performance as eight members of the D’Ascoyne family (who Price sets out to kill). Playing seven men and a woman, aged from their twenties to their eighties, each character is entirely its own creation, and none appears to be imitating the other. Amazing that Ealing Studios also produced ‘Whisky Galore’ and ‘Passport to Pimlico’ in the same year (1949). What do you think of Kind Hearts?
