The beautifully perfect faces of Prince Raj

One of my favorite character developments so far is that from Raji (Akagami no Shirayuki-hime).

He grew up as the spoiled first prince of his country and could be considered lazy, uninterested, and maybe even a brat. Shirayuki put him on his place and gave him a piece of her mind  when he tried to force her into marriage. He was scared and flabbergasted to say the least (and not just because of his encounter with Zen), no one ever dared talk back at him or even threaten him in the slightest way. Shirayuki did that, but mostly she gave him a lesson later on using just her kindness, she said she BELIEVED in him. She told him that she believed he could become a good prince for their country if he put his mind on it, and that she would be glad to see that happening some day.

That made something click inside Raji because he used to think he was useless like the rest of the country thought, so he made no effort to change that. No one was expecting anything from him anymore. But now he had someone that encouraged him to be better, and he DID become a better person in general. He even invited Shirayuki (although a bit forced to by Sakaki) to the castle and did everything in his power to make her feel comfortable and show her how he had improved in his royal duties.

When Shirayuki was kidnaped Raji became incredibly worried and distressed, he might have been afraid of Zen’s reaction, or he felt somewhat responsible about it happening in his castle, either way he came out of his comfort zone (giving orders and waiting for everyone else to do the job). He gave a public speech maybe for the first time and led an entire fleet of his own people to help the others rescue Shirayuki because he cared and now he knew he could do it, someone was counting on it.

Remembering this always warms my heart because it isn’t about a love interest -even though he did become a little flustered sometimes thinking about or talking to Shirayuki-, but more about self-growth and someone trusting in your capability of overcoming and changing everyone else’s opinion about you.

Day 4 - Free Day: Honor (part 2)

The next day, Obi held Shigure in his arms, letting him cling to his father's neck and bury his face in his shoulder. If their fancy clothes from the king wrinkled, that was just the way it had to be. Obi glanced at his wife and chortled at her look of concentration as she paced down the hall in her ball gown. “It’s been a while since we’ve been all dressed up like this, hasn’t it, missus?”

Shirayuki met his knowing grin with a small laugh of her own. “I’m just glad that I haven’t forgotten everything about proper posture.”

Obi would have loved to tease her at those words, but he had to wait when the retainer leading them down the passageway announced, “Welcome to the Grand Symphonic Chamber!”

As the doors opened, Obi and Shirayuki were treated to the sight of a packed room, with rows of guests crushed against each other. Obi frowned and hung back, noticing how little space he would have to move if he took his son and his missus in there.

The sound of familiar footsteps relieved him. He turned to face Sakaki, who was just emerging through a curtained archway. “Pardon me, Lady Shirayuki, Sir Obi. A place has been reserved for you. If you’ll follow me?” He brushed aside the curtain to reveal a delicate spiraling staircase, the sort that only a select few people were invited to use. Tanburun’s king was pulling out all the stops for the missus.

The first people to greet them at the top of the staircase were Rona and Eugena. The twins smiled a greeting in perfect concert. With Rona resting her hand delicately on Eugena’s proffered arm, they were the picture of a young lord and lady, all discord set aside for the occasion. Shirayuki beamed back at them, her shoulders relaxing for the first time.

She and Obi found themselves on a polished marble balcony. The balcony railing dipped low towards the center, allowing the audience below a clear view of the royal family. Shirayuki made for the corner of the balcony nearest the twins, but the queen intercepted her. "Lady Shirayuki, you are the royal guest of honor! It is only right for you and your family to stand in the central place."

Obi eyed her, not liking the glint in her too-sharp eyes when she looked at Shirayuki. He had no choice but to follow his wife as she obeyed the queen, coming to stand next to the fancy box overflowing with silks of every possible color. Up close, he realized it was the infant prince's cradle. The baby was out like a light, as deeply asleep as only a baby can be. Obi shifted his grip on Shigure so that he could keep the queen in his sight. Shigure caught a glimpse of the huge crowd below them and shrank back into his father's side.

Raj stepped forward, resplendent in a glittering doublet and a sweeping cape. "Lords and ladies of Tanburun!" A flourish of violins punctuated the words. Raj snapped his fingers, and the violins faded into an orchestral undertone. "I, King Raj Schenazade, welcome you..."

At the sound of the music, Shigure peeked up from Obi’s shoulder. His eyes caught the lamplight bouncing off a gilded basin perched behind the royal cradle. The basin sat on a pedestal as tall as Rona, carved from top to bottom with twining vines, clouds, and a circle of winged horses rearing before the rim. Mesmerized, Shigure pointed at the pegasi. "Dancing horses?" he whispered.

Obi held a finger to his lips, still watching the queen out of the corner of his eye. She had a good poker face. Shigure wriggled in his arms, craning his neck to look around. The chamber was popping with flowers of all shapes and sizes. Sheer fabric draped every available surface to make the walls glow with soft hues of rose and gold. Shigure sighed, his eyes shining.

As the music reached a crescendo, Shigure giggled in anticipation. He scrambled up onto Obi's shoulders and tipped his head back to inhale the fragrance of the flowers.

Raj threw his arms wide and pronounced, “People of Tanbarun, we present to you…” He and the queen reached into the basin together to gather a handful of delicate white flowers. Opening their hands above the cradle, they rained a shower of apple blossoms on the still sleeping baby. “…our new first prince, Ringo Schenazade!”

Everyone stopped; even the music stuttered. Obi looked at Shirayuki and felt everyone's eyes on her apple-red hair. Shirayuki touched her braid and repeated, “R-Ringo?”

Raj cleared his throat, the sound thunderous in the silence. The music scrambled to begin again; everyone applauded—and Shigure clapped, too, laughing gleefully as all the nobles flung bouquets towards the king's balcony. Feeling his son almost rock himself off his shoulders in his excitement, Obi let him slide to the floor. As soon as he found his feet, Shigure dashed for the railing, pressing towards the music and the color.

Turning back, Obi caught sight of the queen’s smirk. He narrowed his eyes at her and stepped halfway in front of his wife. Shirayuki held her face with both hands, trying to cover her blush. The queen met Obi's glare. Without hesitating, she walked past him to face Shirayuki. “I hope you'll accept our gift to you, Lady Shirayuki.” She folded her hands in front of her dress and inclined her head.

Shirayuki blushed even darker. “Oh, but... naming your son ‘apple’ wasn't necessary... It’s a little…” She clutched the end of her braid.

The queen's poker face broke into a grin that she directed at Raj. “Oh, I know. But I wanted to thank you for everything you've done to make my husband a better man.”

Raj bristled. "Well, of course, I was in complete agreement! No other name would do for my firstborn and heir." He coughed, recovering some of his poise, and looked at Shirayuki sideways. "I realize that you would have preferred knowing the nature of the honor we wanted to do you beforehand, instead of learning it in the view of nearly every important personage in the kingdom, but…tradition would simply not allow anyone but the king and the queen to hear the name before the ceremony." He looked anxiously at Shirayuki. "I hope you can forgive me for the shock."

Obi raised his eyebrows. Raj and his queen made quite a pair. Once again, he found himself caught off-guard in Tanbarun.

Shirayuki’s hand dropped from her hair, and her back straightened. She met Raj’s anxious eyes and favored him with a gentle smile. “Don't worry, King Raj—it's an honor.”
