Roots and Branches
Pairing: Lumberjack!Bucky Barnes x Female Reader
Warnings: 18+ only. Fluff. Smut. Unprotected sex.
Summary: Bucky has built a quiet life in the woods, content to keep the world at arm's length. But when a new neighbor moves to town, her presence ignites emotions heâs hesitant to face.
Word Count: About 18.6k.
notes: Iâve been wanting to write a story in a lumberjack AU for a while now, and here it is. It ended up being longer than I expected, but I have no regrets. In my mind, Lumberjack!Bucky=Beefy!Bucky.
By the way, Iâm still dreaming that someone, feeling inspired, creates Bucky as an NPC for Stardew Valley. I would kiss the ground that person walks on.
The city stretched behind her, a blur of steel and noise shrinking in the rearview mirror. Relief and uncertainty warred in her chest, but she clung tightly to the thought of what lay ahead. The town had always been her haven: sunlit summers chasing fireflies, her grandmotherâs laughter ringing from the porch, and the quiet that once cradled her restless mind in peace.
It had been years since sheâd last visited, but the constant noise, relentless crowds, and a recent, unsettling encounter had made city life unbearable. Her grandmotherâs house, nestled at the edge of a sprawling forest, now felt like her only escape. It wasnât perfect -her uncle had warned her about the repairs needed- but sheâd gladly trade peeling paint and creaky floors for the chaos she was leaving behind. Besides, without rent to worry about and the freedom of her home-office proofreading job, she had the space and time to start over, one step at a time.
The road stretched endlessly before her, winding through rolling hills and patches of dense forest. The further she drove, the quieter it became. No blaring horns, no traffic, just the hum of her engine and the occasional rustle of leaves stirred by the wind. She cracked the window, letting in the crisp scent of pine and earth.
For the first time in months, she felt her shoulders begin to relax. And then, with an ominous thunk, the car jerked to one side.
Her stomach sank as she guided the vehicle to the shoulder, the once-smooth ride now bumpier than a cobblestone street. Stepping out, she found her fears confirmed: the back tire sagged, utterly deflated.
âOf course,â she muttered, brushing a stray hair from her face. âWhy not?â
She retrieved the jack and wrench from the trunk, determined to fix it herself. She wasnât helpless, after all. But after twenty minutes of grunting, tugging, and nearly twisting her wrist, the lug nuts refused to budge. Maybe they just needed a little more effort.
Two hours later, she slumped against the side of the car, her arms aching and her patience long gone. Sheâd tried everything -kicking the wrench, sitting on it for leverage- everything except calling for help, though the lack of cell signal made that impossible. Her lip trembled as she bit down hard, determined not to let the tears of frustration win.
âYou wanted quiet? You got quiet,â she muttered, her voice tight with irritation. Walking seemed like the only option now. Maybe sheâd stumble upon a house, a gas station, anything. Resolving trying her luck, she locked the car and started forward, her boots crunching against the gravel shoulder.
The air hung heavy with stillness, broken only by the occasional chirp of a bird or the rustle of leaves in the breeze. The walk felt endless, each step feeding her doubts. What if there was nothing ahead? What if sheâd made a mistake leaving the car? Just as she was debating turning back, a low rumble cut through the quiet.
She froze, breath hitching as her eyes darted down the empty road. The sound grew louder, unmistakably the steady growl of a truck engine. Relief flooded her chest, tempered by a flicker of caution.
Moving closer to the edge of the road, she raised a tentative hand to wave. Moments later, an old, sturdy truck came into view, slowing as it approached.
Bucky wasnât in any rush. The late afternoon light filtered through the trees, casting long shadows on the road ahead. He kept one hand steady on the wheel, the other resting casually on his thigh. The hum of the truck engine was a comforting sound, a backdrop to his thoughts.
As he rounded a gentle curve, something caught his eye up ahead: a car parked awkwardly on the shoulder. He frowned, slowing the truck. From the angle it was sitting, it didnât look abandoned, but it wasnât going anywhere either. A flat tire, maybe? His brow furrowed. Someone had to own it, but there wasnât another soul in sight.
He continued slowly, his gaze drifting to the road ahead, and thatâs when he spotted her. She stood near the edge of the road, a duffel bag slung over her shoulder and her hand half-raised in a cautious wave. She didnât look panicked, just tired, a little frustrated, and undeniably relieved to see another human being out here.
He brought the truck to a stop a few feet ahead of her, letting the engine idle as he leaned across the seat to glance out the passenger window. âNeed some help?â he called, keeping his tone easy.
She stepped closer, her cautious wave lowering as she approached. When she stopped short of the truck, her polite smile faltered, her gaze locking on his face.
He didnât notice at first, but she stared, caught off guard by the sight ahead of her. Shoulder-length dark hair framed handsome face, shadowed with a day or two of stubble. And those eyes⌠crystal blue, so piercing they looked like they belonged to the lead character of a romance novel rather than the driver of an old truck.
Her lips parted slightly as her thoughts ran wild. Maybe she was hallucinating. Two hours of frustration and the heat of the sun must have gotten to her, conjuring a guy from one of those pink-covered novels sheâd been proofreading.
âYou okay?â His voice pulled her back, laced with just enough concern to cut through the fog in her head.
She blinked rapidly, heat flooding her cheeks as she scrambled for an excuse. âUh, yeah, sorry. Just⌠fatigue, I guess.â She gave a quick laugh, brushing her hair back as if that would somehow erase her embarrassment. âItâs been a long day.â
Bucky didnât seem to notice anything amiss. He nodded, his expression sympathetic. âYeah, I can imagine.â
She cleared her throat, trying to sound more composed. âIâd really appreciate the help. The tireâs flat and the lug nuts are stuck. Iâve tried everything, but they wonât budge.â
Bucky nodded again, shifting the truck into park before stepping out. âI saw the car back there. Mind if I take a look?â
Her shoulders relaxed slightly, and she offered a more genuine smile. âPlease. Thatâd be great.â
She couldnât help but stare as he climbed out of the truck. It wasnât just the striking eyes or the scruff that made him look like heâd stepped off a book cover, it was everything.
Worn jeans sat low on his hips, perfectly fitted to legs that spoke of strength and endurance. A red flannel shirt, snug across his broad shoulders and well-defined arms, hinted at a life of hard, honest work. His boots crunched against the gravel as he moved with an effortless confidence that made it nearly impossible to look away.
Yup, she thought, feeling her cheeks warm again. A lead character.
She snapped her gaze away, trying to focus on literally anything else, the road, the sky, her worn-out sneakers. But as he approached, the heat creeping up her neck didnât fade.
âYou sure youâre okay?â he asked again, his brow furrowing slightly.
She blinked and met his eyes, cursing herself for getting caught again. âYeah! Yeah, Iâm fine,â she said waving a hand. âJust tired, I guess. Two hours of trying to fight with a tire does that to you.â
He nodded slowly, and his expression softened. âFair enough.â
She gestured vaguely toward her car in the distance. âItâs over there. Iâd appreciate the help, itâs like the universe welded those lug nuts on.â
When they reached the car, she unlocked it and retrieved the tools from the trunk, setting them down beside the flat tire. She stepped back, watching as he crouched and took the wrench in his hand. With what seemed like no effort at all, he twisted the lug nuts loose, the metal giving way under his grip as if it had never been stuck in the first place. She stared again, biting her lip as her gaze lingered on how his forearm flexed under the rolled-up sleeves of his flannel. Completely oblivious to her scrutiny, he worked in focused silence, switching out the flat tire with methodical ease. When he finished, he stood up, brushed the dust from his hands, and glanced at the car. His gaze snagged on the backseat, where duffel bags and boxes were crammed together.
âLooks like youâre movinâ,â he said, his voice low and gruff.
She nodded, brushing her hands on her jeans as if sheâd done any of the work. âYeah, I am. Heading to town. My grandmother used to have a house there, Iâm moving into it.â
Bucky glanced at her, his sharp blue eyes unreadable, but not unkind. âThe old house near the woods?â
Her brows lifted in surprise. âYeah, actually. You know it?â
He shrugged lightly, his gaze slipping to the ground. âSmall town,â he murmured.
Unsure if his hesitation was discomfort or just shyness, she shifted her weight. âWell, thanks again for helping. Iâm Y/n, by the way.â
He didnât respond for a moment and then blinked, as if snapping out of a thought. âBucky,â he said simply, his tone softening just enough to feel welcoming.
âWell, nice to meet you, Bucky.â Her smile was warm despite the long, frustrating day.
He nodded slightly, a flicker of a smile tugging at his lips before it disappeared. âYou should get goinâ,â he said after a pause. âRoadâs pretty empty once it gets dark.â
She nodded, grateful. âRight. Thanks again.â
He gave a short nod before turning to his truck. She lingered for a moment, watching as he climbed into the cab and started the engine, before finally slipping into her car and pulling back onto the road.
He gave her a brief nod, turning to his truck without saying another word. She stood there for a moment, watching him go, before climbing into her car.
Bucky climbed into his truck, shutting the door with a quiet click. As the engine rumbled to life, his thumbs tapped idly on the steering wheel, his mind drifting. So, she was the woman moving into the old blue house, the one the old ladies in town had been gossiping about lately.
âFresh face,â theyâd said, curious and speculative. The kind of talk he usually tuned out, but now he could picture her, standing on the side of the road with that friendly smile.
His jaw tightened as he glanced in the rearview mirror, catching a glimpse of her car pulling back onto the road. Attractive, sure, but that wasnât his business. He wasnât in the habit of noticing things like that anymore, or at least, he tried not to.
Shaking his head slightly, he put the truck in gear and pulled back onto the road.
------------
She reached the house in the late afternoon, the golden light of the setting sun painting the wooden structure in warm tones. From a distance, it looked charming, but as she got closer, the years of neglect became more apparent. A shutter hung by a single hinge, swinging slightly in the breeze, and the porch sagged in the middle, its boards warped and cracked.
It didnât seem unlivable, though, and for that, she was grateful. The windows were intact, the roof looked solid, and the front door swung open without resistance when she unlocked it. She stepped inside, wrinkling her nose at the stale smell of a house left empty for too long. Dust coated the floors and every surface in sight, but nothing that a good cleaning wouldnât fix.
Walking through the rooms, she made a mental list of things that needed attention. The walls could use fresh paint, the porch would definitely need repairs before it became a hazard, and a few wobbly cabinet doors in the kitchen caught her eye. It was all manageable.
By the time she returned to the living room, she realized the sun had dipped below the horizon, leaving the house in shadows. She flipped the light switch by the door, but nothing happened. A quick check of the other switches confirmed her suspicion, there wasnât a single light bulb in the entire property.
âFigures,â she muttered, setting her hands on her hips. Luckily, sheâd packed a portable lamp. Its soft glow filled the room as she set it on the floor and unrolled her sleeping bag in the corner, where the old sofa used to sit.
Dinner was a simple affair: a cup of instant noodles and a bottle of water, eaten cross-legged on the floor. She was too tired to think about anything elaborate, and the stillness of the house was oddly comforting after the chaos of the city.
Her thoughts drifted back to the dayâs events, replaying the encounter on the road. Buckyâs face flickered in her mind, those piercing blue eyes, the way his long, dark hair framed his sharp features, the slight rasp to his voice when heâd asked if she was okay. She bit her lip, and the memory of the way heâd effortlessly changed the tire brought a faint smile to her lips as her eyelids grew heavy. The moving truck will arrive by morning, and with better lighting, sheâll assess the house and start making it livable. Ideally, she would have cleaned beforehand, but the moving company only had that date available, so she didnât have much choice.
----------
Right at 8 oâclock sharp, the rumble of the moving truck echoed down the quiet street. She stepped outside, greeting the movers and directing them where to place the furniture. It didnât take long to realize the porchâs sagging boards were going to be a problem. One mover nearly put his foot through a weakened plank, and after a few close calls, they opted to bring in as much as possible through the windows.
After tipping the movers and seeing them off, she grabbed her bag and headed into town. The general store was easy to find, nestled on the main street between a bakery and a small diner. The scent of freshly baked bread lingered in the air as she pushed open the storeâs creaky door, the tiny bell overhead jingling.
Inside, the aisles were narrow and well-stocked, offering everything from cleaning supplies to locally-made jams. She grabbed a basket and began filling it with essentials: sponges, dish soap, floor cleaner, and a few staples for the pantry.
At the checkout line, she felt the weight of a few curious stares. Small towns were like that, everyone wanted to know who the newcomer was. A man in line behind her gave her a polite nod, and a couple of women nearby exchanged whispers before one of them, an older lady with a kind smile, stepped forward.
âMoving into the old blue house on Maple, arenât you?â the woman asked, her voice warm and curious.
She blinked, surprised but not entirely caught off guard. âThatâs right,â she said, returning the smile. âSpent summers there as a kid. Itâs been a while, though.â
âWell, welcome back,â the woman said, clasping her hands. âIâm Dorothy. Let me know if you need anything.â
âActuallyâŚâ she hesitated, seizing the moment. âThe house needs a bit of work, especially the porch. Do you know a good carpenter?â
Dorothyâs face lit up. âSam Wilsonâs the man youâre looking for. Runs a workshop just outside town. Heâs dependable and does fine work. Iâll jot down his address for you.â
After paying for her items, she loaded everything into the car and headed toward the workshop. The drive was short, and soon she spotted a neatly painted sign that read Wilson Woodworks. The building was modest but well-kept, with stacks of lumber and partially finished projects visible through the open garage door.
Grabbing her notepad and pen, she stepped out of the car, hoping Sam would be able to help bring her grandmotherâs house back to life.
The workshop smelled of sawdust and varnish, the soft hum of a saw cutting through wood filling the air. She peered curiously through the open entry, her gaze scanning the neatly organized chaos: tools hanging on pegboards, wood shavings scattered across the floor, and a workbench cluttered with projects in progress. Near the center of the space stood a man in a faded gray t-shirt and jeans, his sleeves rolled up to reveal toned arms. His easy smile and confident posture immediately struck her as someone who knew his craft.
âSam Wilson?â she asked, stepping further inside.
The man turned, his grin widening. âThatâs me,â he replied warmly. âWhat can I do for you?â
âHi. Iâm Y/n. I just moved into town, to the old blue house on Maple Street. The porch is in pretty bad shape, and I was told youâre the one to call.â
Sam gave an approving nod, wiping his hands on a nearby rag. âMaple Street, huh? Yeah, Iâve worked on a couple of those houses. Theyâve got good bones but can be stubborn. Iâd have to take a look before I can give you a plan.â
âOf course,â she said, relieved. âWhen do you think youâd be able to-â
Before she could finish, a gruff voice interrupted from the back of the shop. âSam, I told you that damn hinge on the-â
Bucky appeared, stepping out from what looked like a storage area, drying his hands on a towel. His words faltered the moment he spotted her, his blue eyes locking onto hers in surprise. He froze for a moment, the towel still in his hand, before nodding stiffly.
âHey,â he said, with a cautious tone.
She offered him a small, friendly smile. âHello again.â
Samâs gaze darted between the two of them, a knowing grin spreading across his face like a Cheshire cat. âWell, well,â he drawled. âYou two already know each other so soon?â
Bucky shot him a look -half warning, half exasperation- but Samâs grin only widened.
âWe met yesterday,â she explained, glancing between them. âBucky helped me with a flat tire.â
âDid he now?â Sam leaned back against the workbench, crossing his arms. âMan of many talents, huh, Buck?â
Bucky muttered something under his breath, his ears turning slightly red as he turned away to busy himself with a random piece of wood.
Sam laughed, clearly enjoying himself. âDonât let him fool you,â he said to her, his tone light. âHeâs a softie under all that brooding.â
âIâll keep that in mind,â she replied, unable to suppress a smile.
Buckyâs muttering grew quieter as he moved further into the workshop, but Sam wasnât done. âYouâre in luck, though,â he said to her, eyes sparkling with mischief. âI think youâre gonna give his wood a good use.â
She let out a small laugh, not entirely sure why but unwilling to seem rude. âWell, Iâll do my best,â she said with a shrug, hoping that was the right response.
The sound of tools crashing followed by a sharp, muttered curse that carried through the workshop interrupted the exchange, and she turned toward the source. âIs he okay?â
Sam smirked, his tone teasing as he said, âOh, heâs just fine. Just gets a little... tense when his workâs involved. My friend here is one of my suppliers. Keeps me stocked up on the best lumber in town.â
âOh, I see,â she replied, her gaze briefly flicking toward where Bucky had disappeared. Inwardly, she couldnât help but think that his... thick build seemed to match with the work lumber suppliers did. âSo, should we arrange a time for you to come by and look at the porch?â she asked, mentally slapping herself and steering the conversation back on track.
Sam grinned, leaning casually against the counter. âTomorrow works for you? Say mid-morning?â
âThat sounds great,â she agreed, already mentally listing what she might need to tidy up before his visit.
As her car disappeared down the road, Bucky emerged from the back of the workshop, his steps deliberate and brooding as he approached Sam.
âWhat was that?â he asked, his voice low but edged with irritation.
Sam raised an eyebrow, feigning innocence as he crossed his arms. âWhat was what?â
âYou know what,â Bucky growled, pointing a finger at him. âDonât.â
Sam held up his hands, his expression mock-innocent. âDonât what? Youâre projecting, man. Sheâs just a new neighbor who needs some help with her porch. Thatâs all.â
Bucky narrowed his eyes, his voice dropping even lower. âWhatever your bird brain is planning on doing, donât. Iâm not... Just stay out of my business.â
Sam gave him a sidelong look, clearly unimpressed by Buckyâs gruff warning. âYou think too highly of yourself, Barnes,â he said with a smirk. âIâm just trying to help the lady out, same as you did.â
The logger threw one last dirty glance at Sam, muttering under his breath. âNext cargoâs in four days,â he grumbled, already heading for the door.
Samâs amused chuckle followed him, but Bucky ignored it, his boots hitting the workshop floor with heavy steps.
As he reached the truck, a sharp twinge in his left arm made him curse softly. He grabbed it, flexing his fingers out of habit, then glanced up at the sky. It was streaked with soft clouds, their innocent appearance at odds with what he felt brewing in the air.
A storm was coming.
It wasnât something anyone could see yet, but Bucky didnât need a weather report. Since his arm had been crushed in Afghanistan, leaving him with orthopedic implants and lingering aches, he could always tell when the pressure was about to shift.
He flexed his arm again, rolling his shoulder to ease the discomfort. The storm would hit soon, inside and out.
Sliding into the truck, he decided to stop by the general store on the way home. He needed a bottle of scotch. Maybe two.
It was shaping up to be one of those nights.
When she got back to the house, she dropped the bags on the kitchen counter and let out a sigh. She glanced around at the dim, dusty space and resolved to tackle it head-on. After eating a quick sandwich, she got to work.
The first task was the lightbulbs, all of them. Room by room, she placed them, swearing quietly each time she had to stretch on tiptoe or drag a chair around. Next came the cleaning. By the time she was almost finished, it was late afternoon. She stood in the middle of the living room, exhausted and sweaty, a few stubborn cobwebs clinging to her sleeves. She pushed her hair off her forehead and noticed, through the newly cleaned windows, the unmistakable sight of grey clouds gathering on the horizon.
âGreat,â she muttered, dragging the vacuum to a corner. She glanced up at the ceiling, half expecting to see a stain forming already. âPlease, no leaks. Just this once, let me have some luck.â The wind outside began to pick up, rattling the loose shutter on the porch. She grimaced. The house might not be falling apart, but it wasnât going to win any awards for weatherproofing either.
She pulled the last bag of cleaning supplies toward her, determined to finish what she could before the storm hit.
The rhythmic patter of rain on the roof accompanied her as she sat at the small kitchen table, nursing a simple dinner. Her arms ached pleasantly from the dayâs cleaning spree, her newly functional lightbulbs casting a warm glow over the room. Despite the state of the house when sheâd arrived, it felt more like a home now, or at least the beginning of one.
The rain grew heavier, drumming steadily against the windows as she finished eating and washed her dishes. With a satisfied sigh, she headed for the bathroom. The steamy warmth of the shower was a welcome reprieve, washing away the grime and fatigue of the day. She closed her eyes as the water cascaded down, her mind meandering to the list of things she still needed to tackle.
The porch needs fixing first. Maybe some paint for the walls. And that loose shutter... her lips curled into a soft, almost dreamy smile as her thoughts drifted to Bucky. She bit her lip, suppressing a laugh at herself. It had been a while since sheâd had anyone to daydream about, and maybe it was just her exhaustion playing tricks on her. Clearly, she needed a break from all these romance novels. The irony wasnât lost on her, spending her days proofreading swooning declarations and lingering glances wasnât helping her sanity.
On the other side of town, the rain was more than just a backdrop for Bucky, it was a trigger, a reminder. He sat on the kitchen floor, his back pressed against the counter, cradling a bottle of scotch in one hand and absently flexing the fingers of his left arm with the other. The pain in his left arm wasnât unbearable -heâd had worse- but the weather had settled into his bones.
One would think Afghanistanâs climate rarely saw rain, but he knew better. In the northern regions, heavy rains could flood entire valleys in minutes, turning the ground into treacherous mud. It wasnât just the water he remembered, but the chaos it brought. Mud-caked boots slipping on uneven terrain. The deafening crack of gunfire cutting through the downpour. The screams of comrades whoâd never make it out of the storm, swallowed by water and bullets alike.
He closed his eyes tightly, forcing the memories away, but the rainâs steady rhythm seemed determined to drag him back. He took a long swig from the bottle, the burn of the alcohol a poor distraction for his haunted mind.
And then, unbidden, he thought of her.
The way sheâd smiled at him earlier today at Samâs workshop. Like she was genuinely glad to see him. He shook his head sharply, scowling at himself. He didnât deserve to think about her. Didnât deserve to let himself linger on the way sheâd looked at him with curiosity instead of judgment. He was a broken-down man who knew better than to let anyone get close. The rainâs rhythm matched the pounding in his head, and he rubbed his temple with a quiet groan. Thinking about her was a mistake, one he couldnât afford to make.
------------
The low hum of a truck pulling up broke the peaceful morning. She peeked out the window, spotting Sam hopping out with a clipboard in hand, a tape measure clipped to his belt. His easy smile greeted her as she opened the door.
âMorning,â he said, tipping an imaginary hat. âReady to figure out what your little slice of heaven here needs?â
She chuckled, stepping aside to let him in. âLetâs call it a fixer-upper and go from there.â
Sam gave a low whistle as he stepped onto the sagging porch. âFirst thingâs first, this baby needs a lot of love. Iâm surprised itâs holding up at all.â He tapped one of the warped boards with his boot, and it creaked ominously.
âWell, thatâs why youâre here,â she replied lightly, crossing her arms.
They walked the perimeter of the house as Sam scribbled notes on his clipboard, occasionally pausing to point out things that needed attention, a loose shutter here, a weathered doorframe there. He climbed the porch steps again, shaking his head. âYouâre lucky nothing majorâs out of whack, though this porch... Yeah, weâll start here.â
She nodded, leaning against the railing -carefully-. âSounds good. So, whatâs next?â
Sam grinned, snapping the clipboard shut. âNow comes the fun part, asking nosy questions while I figure out how to turn this place into a proper home. Whereâd you move from?â
âCity,â she said, her gaze flicking to the overgrown yard. âNeeded a change. Too much noise, too many people.â
He nodded like he understood perfectly. âYeah, city life can wear you down. And what do you do for work? So that I know if I ever need something specific.â
âIâm a proofreader,â she replied. âNot exactly glamorous, but it lets me work from anywhere.â
He chuckled. âSounds pretty glamorous to me. Living the dream: working in pajamas, no one to bother you.â
She laughed, shaking her head. âNot quite. Deadlines donât care if youâre in pajamas.â
âFair point,â Sam said, scribbling something on his clipboard. He glanced at her casually. âAnyone special missing you back in the city?â
Her brow furrowed slightly, caught off guard. âUh, no. Why?â
âNo reason,â he said with an exaggerated shrug, flashing his most innocent grin. âWe small-town folks are just naturally curious.â Satisfied, he tucked the clipboard under his arm. âWell,â he said, turning on the charm, âIâll put together a plan for the porch and those other fixes we talked about. Shouldnât take long.â
âThanks, Sam,â she said, smiling warmly.
He tipped his imaginary hat again. âHappy to help.â As he walked back to his truck, he patted the clipboard storing every little detail sheâd just shared. Oh, heâd have fun with this later.
Over the next few days, she found herself settling deeper into the rhythm of small-town life. Locals stopped to chat whenever she ran errands, and she was finally starting to remember their names. The house was slowly transforming under her care, each repair bringing it closer to what she remembered from her childhood summers.
And then there was Bucky. He was a puzzle she hadnât figured out yet. Quiet and guarded one moment, then unexpectedly kind the next. Their paths seemed to cross more often now. It wasnât intentional, but each encounter left her feeling like sheâd peeled back another layer of his carefully constructed wall.
The first time it happened, she was in the general store, arms full of cleaning supplies and pantry staples, along with a guilty indulgence or two. As she stepped into the checkout line, she spotted him just ahead of her with a modest basket of items, his broad shoulders blocking most of her view of the cashier.
As she shuffled forward, her eyes drifted to his basket. Among the practical items -bread, coffee, and what looked like a pack of nails- sat a brightly colored box of dinosaur-shaped mac and cheese.
She couldnât help herself. âDidnât peg you for the novelty pasta type.â She quipped lightly, a teasing smile curling her lips.
Bucky turned his head sharply, caught off guard. He glanced at the box, then back at her, a faint pink tinting his cheeks, as he muttered âTheyâre easy. And cheap.â
The combination of his flustered tone and stoic expression made her grin. âHey, no judgment. Dinosaurs are awesome. Iâd pick those over plain elbows any day.â
His lips twitched, just slightly, but enough to count. âYouâve got good taste,â he said, the faintest trace of a smirk softening his features.
The cashier rang up his items, and he moved through quickly, nodding politely as he passed her. But as she finished paying and struggled to balance her bags, she found him lingering outside near his truck.
âNeed a hand?â he asked gruffly, though he was already moving toward her.
She hesitated for a moment before relenting. âIf you donât mind.â
Without a word, he scooped up the heaviest bags as if they weighed nothing. She blinked at the sight, muscles flexing under his worn henley.
âThanks,â she said, slightly breathless, trying to keep up as he strode to her car.
âWelcome,â he said simply, setting the bags in her trunk with ease. His gaze flicked to her briefly, and he almost looked like he wanted to say more. Instead, he just gave a curt nod and walked back to his truck.
It was only a few days later when they ran into each other again, this time at the post office. She had just picked up a package that was almost comically large, far too awkward for one person to handle easily. Balancing it against her hip, she tried to maneuver her way out of the building without dropping it, muttering a steady stream of curses under her breath.
Just as the box tilted precariously, a hand appeared to steady it, large and sure.
âCareful,â came the familiar low drawl.
She blinked, startled, and looked up into a pair of blue eyes she was starting to recognize all too well. âThanks,â she said, exhaling in relief. âStarting to think you have impeccable timing.â
His lips twitched, that almost-smile she was beginning to appreciate flickering across his face. âJust passing through.â He replied, shifting his grip on the package and effortlessly hoisting it up, carrying it like it weighed nothing at all.
âOh, you donât have to-â
âItâs fine,â he stated simply, his tone leaving no room for argument. He glanced at her car and walked toward it.
She trailed behind him as he easily strode with the package. By the time she unlocked the trunk, he deposited the box neatly inside, brushing his hands off quickly.
âThanks,â she said again, feeling a little useless but sincerely grateful.
âItâs nothinâ,â he replied, already stepping back. His eyes lingered on her for a second longer than usual before he turned toward his truck, parked a few spaces down.
She watched him go, following the deliberate, measured way he moved. Just as he reached his door, she called out impulsively, âI owe you one, you know.â
He paused, glancing back at her with a quirk of his brow. âIâll hold you to it,â he said, the hint of a smirk tugging at his mouth. And then he was gone, leaving her with a warm, unexpected feeling she carried all the way home.
The days that followed were quiet but productive. Between finishing work assignments, and tinkering with small projects around the house, she hardly noticed how much time she spent indoors until her eyes began to ache from staring at her laptop screen for hours on end.
One crisp morning, the allure of fresh air proved too strong to resist. She decided to take a walk in the woods, craving a change of scenery. It had been years since the last time sheâd wandered those familiar paths, but she still remembered some of the trails from her childhood summers.
As she wandered along the narrow dirt trail, the sunlight filtering through the canopy in golden shafts painted the forest in a warm, serene glow. She hadnât expected to encounter anyone out here, but the steady, rhythmic thwack of an axe meeting wood broke through the quiet, catching her attention.
Curiosity stirred, and before she could think better of it, she found herself following the sound, her footsteps light on the soft earth.
There he was, in a small clearing just off the trail, splitting logs with effortless precision. Buckyâs axe swung high before coming down in a clean arc, the sharp crack of splitting wood breaking the stillness. A neat pile of firewood grew beside him, while fresh rounds waited in a haphazard stack.
He hadnât noticed her yet, too focused on his work, and she found herself lingering longer than she should have, watching the way his muscles moved beneath his shirt and how his hair stuck to his forehead.
When he finally glanced up and spotted her, her stomach flipped. His brows knit together in mild surprise, and he straightened, propping the axe against a nearby stump.
âYou lost?â he asked, with a low and even voice, though his tone wasnât unkind.
She stepped closer, shaking her head. âNo, just wandering. I didnât mean to interrupt.â
âYou didnât,â he said, grabbing a rag from the pile and wiping his hands. His gaze lingered on her for a moment, like he was trying to piece together why she was there. âTrail gets tricky up ahead. Lots of roots and uneven ground.â
âIâll keep that in mind,â she replied, glancing around the clearing. âThis your spot?â
He nodded once. âHelps to stay busy.â
She looked at the pile of wood, then back at him. âLooks like more than just âstaying busy.ââ
A faint smirk tugged at his lips. âWinters here are rough.â
There was a pause, not quite awkward, but heavy. She shifted her weight, tucking a stray strand of hair behind her ear. âWell, itâs impressive. I mean, you make it look easy.â
âItâs not,â he said simply, picking up the axe again. âBut you get used to it.â
She lingered, unsure if she should say more or let him get back to work. He tilted his head slightly, watching her with a curious expression.
âYou like the woods?â he asked, breaking the silence.
âYeah,â she said, smiling softly. âItâs peaceful out here. Different from the city.â
His gaze flicked back to the axe in his hand. âIt is.â There was a weight to his words, hinting at something deeper than just the stillness of the woods, but she chose not to push.
âWell, Iâll let you get back to it,â she said finally, offering him a polite nod.
âCareful on the trail,â he said again, his voice softer this time.
As she turned to leave, she couldnât resist glancing back over her shoulder. He was already back to work, the axe slicing clean through another log. She bit her lip, shaking her head at herself as she continued down the trail.
He sighed. Winters are rough? That was the polite answer, the one people accepted without a second glance. The truth was darker, heavier. Every time the weight of old memories clawed at him -screams, chaos, the suffocating fear that came into walking a dark tunnel that could bury him alive- he found his solace in the rhythmic swing of an axe. Splitting firewood was his refuge, the repetitive motion carving out a rare emptiness in his mind.
He kept chopping, waiting until he was sure she wouldnât glance back again. Then, he let himself linger, his eyes following her retreating form.
He was interested.
Shit.
Sam hadnât been helping either, dropping âinnocentâ tidbits about her, like breadcrumbs, every time they crossed paths. How she worked from home. How she wasnât seeing anyone. How she seemed to be settling in, though she was still getting used to small-town life. Bucky could tell Sam was trying to nudge him, but it only stirred something conflicted in him.
On one hand, he was drawn to her, from her curves to the way she smiled, also, the way her voice provoked a warmth in him he hadnât felt in years. On the other hand, the thought of pursuing something -anything- good for himself felt... wrong. Like he didnât deserve it.
And then there was the matter of simply not knowing how.
He was out of shape when it came to people. Always had been, even before life turned upside down. Now, with scars inside and out, the idea of approaching her felt like staring down at a puzzle he didnât have the pieces for.
What would he even say? What would she think if she knew the mess he was?
Bucky swung the axe harder, the sharp crack of the log splitting echoing through the clearing. He flexed his fingers and tightened his jaw.
For now, all he could do was chop and hope the noise drowned out the voice in his head whispering that he wasnât enough.
Over the next couple of months, the little town started to feel less like a temporary retreat and more like a place she could call home. The older women gushed over her porch restoration project and eagerly shared gardening tips, while the crowd closer to her age welcomed her into their fold with invitations for coffee dates or potluck dinners.
And then there was Bucky.
Though technically part of that age group, he was absent from most social gatherings. She couldnât picture him at a potluck, anyway, sitting around sharing recipes or small talk. It just wasnât him. Yet, in his own quiet way, heâd become more present in her life.
Bit by bit, he seemed to uncoil from whatever tension held him so tightly. He started to linger longer during their chance encounters, sometimes surprising them both with a dry, unexpected joke. Other times, heâd pitch in with simple acts of kindness, like carrying eventually heavy stuff to her car, or even fixing the wobbly step on her porch when Sam got busier and asked him to do it. He could have said no, but he still came, quietly getting the job done without any fanfare.
-----------
Then, the announcement of the annual town festival brought a new wave of excitement. It was the event of the season, where everyone came together to celebrate the town's founding. Without much hesitation, she signed up to contribute, deciding to sell pies and baked goods. Not only was it a way to contribute to the celebration, but it was also a chance to make a little extra income for the ongoing repairs to the house. The porch was done, but there was still plenty of work to do: fresh paint, creaky floorboards, and other little fixes that added up.
So, she rolled up her sleeves and got to work. The week leading up to the festival was a whirlwind of flour-dusted counters and the comforting aroma of cinnamon and vanilla. She tested each recipe to make sure they were just like her grandmother used to make.
The excitement of the upcoming festival settled over the town, and she felt like she was becoming part of something bigger, a tradition, a community.
Meanwhile, word had spread that she was setting up a booth to sell her pies. Sam, always the one to keep an ear to the ground, couldn't help but tease Bucky one morning while they were working on a new batch of supplies for the festival booths. They were building the structure for several of the vendors, and Bucky had come by to help with the heavier lifting, always lending a hand when needed.
Sheâs doing a booth, huh?â Sam asked with a knowing grin as he hammered in a final nail. âMaybe you should swing by, get yourself a little sugar, hm?â
Buckyâs response was as sharp as ever. âShut up, Wilson,â he grumbled, his eyes narrowing as he worked, but Sam could see the way his shoulders stiffened, the way he held himself a little straighter.
He stayed silent for a beat, focusing on the sturdy plank of wood he was planing down. The rhythmic scrape of the tool seemed to be the only thing keeping him calm. Sam, however, was never one to let a good opportunity slip by.
âIâm just saying,â Sam pressed on, leaning casually against the workbench, âsheâs single, sheâs sweet, and she seems to like you.â He smirked, his tone teetering on playful. âYou could, yâknow, take a shot. Maybe buy a pie while youâre at it. You canât live on just dino-shaped mac and cheese.â
Bucky huffed a humorless laugh, setting the plane down with a bit more force than intended. âAnd what would I even say to her, huh? âHi, Iâm good at chopping wood and screwing things up.â Thatâs a real winner.â
Sam raised an eyebrow, undeterred. âYou donât have to lead with the self-deprecating monologue, man. Just... be you. Youâre a good guy, Buck, even if you refuse to see it.â He straightened, resting a hand on his hip. âAnd sheâs clearly got some interest. Not every woman looks at a guy like heâs the only steady thing in a storm.â
Bucky shot him a sharp look, the tips of his ears unmistakably pink. âShe doesnât-â
âOh, she does,â Sam interrupted with a grin that widened at Buckyâs growing discomfort. âAnd youâd see it too if you didnât spend so much time convincing yourself youâre not worth her attention.â
For a long moment, Bucky said nothing, his jaw tightening as he flexed his left hand, a tell Sam recognized far too well. Finally, he sighed, leaning his weight on the workbench. âItâs not that simple.â
âIt never is,â Sam agreed, his tone softening. âBut you donât have to figure it all out today. Start small. Talk to her at the festival. Buy a pie. Hell, buy the whole booth if you have to.â He clapped Bucky on the shoulder, eliciting a grunt. âJust donât let this pass you by.â
----------
The day of the festival arrived, and the town square buzzed with life. Booths lined the streets, each one bursting with local goods: handmade crafts, fresh produce, and jars of preserves. Children darted through the crowds, their faces painted like butterflies or superheroes, their laughter weaving through the cheerful hum of a local band playing in the distance.
Her booth stood out in its simplicity, decorated with gingham tablecloths and jars of freshly picked flowers from her garden. The pies were the centerpiece, their golden crusts glistening in the sunlight, flanked by trays of cookies and jars of homemade jam.
She adjusted the sign that read âBaked Goods â From Grannyâs Recipe Boxâ and stepped back, taking a deep breath to steady herself.
The day unfolded in a whirlwind of chatter and laughter. Her booth was busier than sheâd dared to hope, a steady stream of customers stopping to sample the pies or chat about the sign. Compliments came easily from the townsfolk, praising her buttery crusts and spiced fillings. Each kind word felt like a little victory, her heart swelling with the realization that she was becoming a part of the community.
The sun climbed higher into the sky, casting warm golden light over the bustling festival. Her booth remained busy, the stream of smiling faces keeping her occupied and distracted, though not enough to stop her from glancing through the crowd now and then.
By mid-afternoon, Sam strolled up, hands in his pockets and an easy grin on his face. "Well, well. Look at you, baking queen," he teased.
She laughed, brushing a stray strand of hair out of her face. âHardly. But Iâll take it. Want a slice?â
Sam leaned on the edge of the booth, scanning the offerings. âTempting, but I might be here on more of a reconnaissance mission.â
Her brow lifted. âWhat kind of mission?â
âYou know, checking in, seeing how you're doing, and maybe scouting for a certain broody lumberjack.â He winked, and she rolled her eyes with a chuckle.
âLet me guess, he sent you to grab a pie?â she joked, wiping her hands on her apron.
âBucky? Nah.â Samâs grin dimmed slightly, and he gave a small shrug. âDidnât see him around earlier. Honestly, he might not even show. Festivals arenât really his thing.â
She tried to keep the disappointment off her face, focusing instead on adjusting a jar of jam on the table. Sam caught the subtle shift in her expression, his teasing smile softening.
âHeâs around,â Sam said casually, leaning an elbow on the edge of the booth. âBuckyâs just⌠not much of a crowd guy. Give him time.â
Her fingers paused on the jar, but she didnât look up. âI wasnât-â
âSure you werenât,â Sam interrupted with a knowing grin. âBut I wouldnât hold it against him. People arenât really his thing. Except, maybe, certain people.â
She rolled her eyes, her lips curving into a small smile despite herself. âAnd youâre just full of insight, arenât you?â
âHey, Iâm just observinâ.â He straightened up, grabbing a cookie from the tray. âAnd Iâll take one of these for the road. Festivalâs not complete without snacks.â
She shook her head, amused as Sam strolled off, leaving her alone to greet the next customer.
The hours passed in a blur of chatter and sales, the sun dipping lower in the sky. Sheâd almost stopped scanning the square for him when, late in the afternoon, a familiar figure emerged.
Bucky walked slowly, his hands buried deep in his jacket pockets, his gaze flicking over the booths like he wasnât sure where to go. Then he spotted her. His shoulders straightened, and their eyes met across the square. For a moment, neither moved. Then, with an almost sheepish hesitation, he started toward her.
Each step closer felt like a mistake, and yet he didnât stop. His eyes took in the sight of her booth, tidy and charming, and then her. She wore a casual dress under a cardigan, and a frilly apron tied neatly around her waist, the image of a vintage housewife. The dress fit snugly at her chest, the fabric pulling slightly when she moved to rearrange something on the table. It wasnât anything overly revealing, but it didnât matter; all of the visual information seemed to bypass his brain entirely and head directly to the south. He swallowed hard, trying to redirect his focus before he embarrassed himself.
âHey,â he said when he reached the booth, his voice a little softer than he intended. He scratched the back of his neck, glancing briefly at the display of pies and jars before forcing himself to meet her eyes.
âHi,â she replied, her face lighting up in a way that made the whole awkward journey worth it.
âI, uh... thought Iâd stop by,â he continued, the words fumbling slightly as he fought the urge to retreat. âLooks like business is good.â He gestured vaguely at the booth, trying to seem casual, though his pulse was anything but.
âItâs been steady,â she said, her smile warm. âI wasnât sure if youâd make it.â
Her words made him hesitate, but only briefly. He nodded toward the pies, his lips twitching into what might have been the beginnings of a smile. âFigured Iâd see what all the fuss is about.â
âAnd?â she asked, a playful glint in her eye. âAre you finding the fuss justified?â
He looked at her then, his gaze lingering in a way that made her shift her weight slightly. His lips quirked into the faintest smirk. âSeen a few tempting products,â he said, his voice low, almost teasing.
Was that... a double meaning? She wasnât sure, but the way her stomach flipped at his tone left her biting her lip to suppress a smile.
âWell,â she said, leaning slightly against the booth, âwhat might you be interested in, then?â
âGot any plum jam?â he asked after a moment, his eyes scanning the jars displayed on the table.
She winced apologetically. âSorry, sold out this morning. Itâs a popular one.â
He gave a small nod, not seeming too put out. âGuess Iâll settle for a slice of apple pie, then.â
âYou wonât regret it,â she said, quickly cutting a generous slice and placing it in a little paper dish. As she handed it to him, their fingers brushed briefly, a small, electric jolt of contact that she tried not to overthink.
âThanks,â he murmured, his gaze flickering back to hers for a split second before focusing intently on the pie. He took a bite, and the deep, guttural groan that escaped him had her blinking in surprise, and then staring at him, very much not with pure thoughts.
Her gaze dropped helplessly to his mouth, where a small dollop of apple mush clung stubbornly to the corner of his lips. Oh, how sheâd love to help him clean that up, maybe even by lapping it up herself. The thought had her throat going dry. âUh, you have... there,â she managed, signaling to her own mouth because words failed her entirely.
He frowned slightly, his thumb swiping at his lips. When he missed, she gave a quick, stifled laugh, shaking her head and pointing more precisely. His next attempt was successful, and when he scooped the apple filling with his thumb and licked it clean off, her breath caught.
That should be illegal.
âDamn,â he said, glancing down at the pie with newfound respect. âGuess you can marry now.â
She blinked, startled. âWhat?â
His ears reddened as he fumbled for an explanation, suddenly realizing how strange that sounded. âUh... my ma used to say... I mean, like, if a woman could cook well, sheâd be ready for marriage, or something⌠uh, forget it.â He waved a hand, suddenly looking like he wanted the ground to swallow him whole.
âOh no,â she said, crossing her arms and quirking a brow, her lips twitching in amusement. âNow I really want to know what your ma used to say.â
âMy ma used to say,â he admitted reluctantly, âa woman who can bake a pie like this could keep a man happy for life.â
As the words left his mouth, he realized -really realized- what heâd just said. Bringing up marriage, even indirectly, in what was supposed to be casual conversation? A new low, even for him. His inward grimace was immediate, a mortifying mix of regret and disbelief at his own lack of subtlety.
She blinked at him, her head tilting slightly, a flicker of something unreadable crossing her face. âWell,â she said slowly, the edge of her lip quirking up, âBet she was the kind of person who made everyone feel at home.â
He cleared his throat, rubbing the back of his neck. âYeah, she... she was something.â Hoping to steer the moment away from the awkward territory heâd stumbled into, he gestured vaguely to the booth. âAnyway, uh... pieâs great. Really.â
âThanks, Bucky. Iâm glad you like it. Itâs one of my grannyâs best recipes.â She smiled warmly
He nodded, his lips twitching into something close to a smile. âShe taught you well.â
That earned a soft laugh from her. âYeah, sheâd make me practice until I got it just right. Burned a lot of pies before this one.â
The conversation lingered as they eased into a rhythm, the earlier tension giving way to something more relaxed. She asked about his work, curious about how he supplied Sam with lumber, and he surprised her by sharing a bit more than usual talking about the care it took to choose the right trees and how the process wasnât just chopping wood but understanding the forest itself.
âYou make it sound like an art,â she said, tilting her head thoughtfully.
âGuess it kinda is,â he admitted. âYouâve gotta respect it. If you donât, it shows in the work.â
Before she could respond, a familiar voice interrupted, cutting through their moment like a buzz saw.
âWell, well, look who finally decided to show up!â
Samâs broad grin was radiant as he strolled up to the booth, hands tucked casually into his pockets.
Bucky groaned softly, his shoulders slumping a fraction as if bracing himself for whatever teasing was about to come. âWhat do you want, Sam?â
âOh, nothing much,â Sam said breezily, his eyes darting between the two of them. âJust thought Iâd check in, maybe grab some pie, see whatâs happening over here.â He smirked. âLooks like I picked the right booth.â
She rolled her eyes, but the smile tugging at her lips betrayed her amusement. âCareful, Sam. Youâre gonna run me out of inventory if you keep showing up.â
Sam leaned on the counter, grinning. âDonât worry, Iâm here only to make sure Bucky doesnât scare off your customers with his broody face.â
Bucky shot him a glare, but Sam only shrugged, completely unfazed.
âActually, Buck, some of the people are starting to pack up. We should get a head start on breaking down everything so tomorrowâs not such a hassle,â Sam continued, his tone shifting to business mode. âDonât give me that look, I'm not the one who strolled in here right before closing time.â
Bucky sighed but didnât argue. âRight, right,â he muttered but didnât seem eager to leave just yet.
She chuckled softly at their dynamic, watching as Sam started to organize a few things, seemingly trying to speed up the process of wrapping up. Â âWell then, Iâll just get the last of these pies packed up.â she said, wiping her hands on her apron.
âOh, Iâm sure youâll make it a little easier on yourself if you let us take a couple of those home,â Sam said with a grin, his eyes scanning the remaining trays. âFor later, of course. Canât let all this deliciousness go to waste.â
Bucky didnât respond right away, but his gaze lingered on the last few slices, making it clear he wasnât about to pass up on some baked goods.
âYeah, well, I suppose youâre right,â she said, laughing. âGuess you both deserve some for your hard work on the structures.â
âIâm not gonna argue with that,â Sam said, grinning as he reached for the remaining slices of pie. âBesides, he said, gesturing toward Bucky, âlook at him. He must be starving. You donât know the amount of food it takes to keep all that going.â
Bucky froze mid-chew, his fork hovering just above the plate, and gave Sam a pointed look, equal parts exasperation and disbelief. âSeriously?â
âWhat?â Sam shrugged innocently, though his smirk said otherwise. âItâs true. Youâre always munching on something. Remember last week? Three sandwiches in one sitting, and you still stole my fries.â
Buckyâs glare sharpened, but it only fueled Samâs amusement. âYou ate half my wings, Wilson,â Bucky said dryly, his tone low and unimpressed.
âDetails,â Sam said with a wave of his hand, his grin not fading. âPoint is, youâve got the appetite of a bear coming out of hibernation. Iâm just trying to make sure you donât go hungry.â
She laughed as she placed the box of pies on the counter. âWell, I canât have that on my conscience,â she teased. âTake as many slices as you need, Bucky. Weâll call it a public service.â
Bucky shifted on his feet, his gaze darting between her and the pies. The faintest flush crept up his neck as he mumbled, âThanks,â and slid another slice of pie onto his plate. His eyes lingered on the cookies for a moment before he reached for one, his movements a little hesitant, as if he wasnât sure how much was too much.
âYou sure?â he asked, glancing up at her, his voice quieter now.
She smiled warmly, waving off his concern. âPositive. Consider it payment for all the heavy lifting.â
He huffed a low laugh, the corner of his mouth twitching up in what could almost be called a smile. âAppreciate it,â he said, his words rough but sincere.
Sam clapped him on the shoulder, almost making Bucky drop the cookie. âAlright, big guy, letâs get out of her way before you clean her out completely.
Bucky shot him a half-hearted glare but allowed Sam to steer him toward a cluster of tables nearby, his plate balanced carefully in one hand.
She watched them go, her lips curving into a smile as Sam said something that made Bucky shake his head in exasperation.
With a deep breath, she turned back to finish packing up, though her gaze flicked toward their working spot every now and then.
That night, she lay in bed, the exhaustion of the festival weighing her body down but leaving her mind buzzing. Every detail of the day replayed like a film reel, but one moment stood out above all: Bucky and his awkward, utterly endearing comment about marriage.
She groaned, burying her flushed face into her pillow like a teenager. Guess you can marry now. The memory of his hesitant, almost panicked attempt to explain himself made her toes curl, not in secondhand embarrassment but in something far warmer, more thrilling. And the way heâd looked at her as he said it... that fleeting vulnerability, his ears burning red. She shook her head, biting her lip against a smile.
An idea came to her mind while sipping her morning coffee, staring at the half-empty box of baked goods and preserves she hadnât packed into the car the day before. Sheâd thought she was carrying too much, but now she saw what sheâd left behind: two jars of plum jam. The very ones Bucky had wanted at the festival but hadnât been able to get.
She turned one jar in her hand, smiling faintly. It wasnât much, but it felt like the right thing to do, a small gesture to thank him for all the ways heâd helped her. A friendly token, nothing more. The thought made her nerves tingle anyway.
Shoving those thoughts aside, she packed the jars into her backpack, laced up her boots, and headed out. She made her way toward the spot where sheâd found him last time, the rhythmic thwack of his axe cutting through wood still vivid in her memory. She tried not to feel disappointed when the clearing came into view and she didnât see him right away, but then a faint rustling sound caught her attention.
Bucky was there, further back, crouched near a stack of neatly cut logs, inspecting a wedge that had splintered unevenly. He looked so at ease in his element, that she almost turned back. But then he shifted, his head tilting slightly as if heâd heard her approach.
âHey,â she called, her voice lighter than intended.
He stood, turning to face her. His brow furrowed slightly in surprise, but it softened quickly. âHey.â
âI, uh...â She adjusted her backpack strap, suddenly feeling awkward for tracking him down like this. âI had some leftovers from the festival, and I remembered you wanted plum jam. Turns out I had two jars I didnât even bring.â She opened the backpack and pulled them out, offering them with a tentative smile. âFigured Iâd bring them to you as a thank-you for all the times youâve helped me out.â
Bucky stared at the jars, his expression unreadable at first, but then his lips tugged into the faintest hint of a smile. âYou didnât have to do that.â
âI know,â she said, shrugging lightly. âBut I wanted to. Itâs just jam, anyway.â
âJust jam,â he repeated, taking the jars from her hands, his fingers brushing hers briefly. He glanced at the labels, then back at her. âThanks. Really.â
âYouâre welcome,â she said, feeling breathless under his intense gaze. She stuffed her hands into her knitted jacket pockets, trying to play it cool. âHope itâs as good as my pies.â
His lips twitched, that almost-smile appearing again. âGuess Iâll have to let you know.â For a moment, neither of them moved, then he cleared his throat, gesturing toward the logs behind him. âYou walked all the way out here just for this?â he asked, slightly lifting his brow.
âPretty much, yeah,â she admitted, her voice softening as a hint of shyness crept in. She shifted her weight from one foot to the other, suddenly very aware of how much effort sheâd put into this small gesture.
Buckyâs gaze lingered on her for a moment, âThatâs... thoughtful of you.â
Her cheeks warmed under his quiet scrutiny, but she forced a casual shrug. âWell, I figured it beats letting them collect dust in my pantry.â
âStill,â he murmured, âthanks. Means a lot.â
âYouâre welcome. I, uh...â She glanced at the jars in his hands, suddenly unsure of herself. âI wonât take more of your time. Just wanted to...â She gestured vaguely toward the jam, the movement almost bashful.
Buckyâs gaze softened, his grip tightening slightly around the jars. Before she could step away, he called after her, his voice rough yet almost hesitant. âHey.â
She turned back, catching the flicker of something earnest in his expression.
âThanks again,â he said simply, holding up the jars slightly.
Her smile softened, more genuine now. âAnytime.â
Bucky stood there for a long moment after she left, staring at the jars in his hands. The deep, rich purple of the jam glinted faintly in the sunlight filtering through the trees, but his mind wasnât on the contents. It was on her. The way her voice had faltered, the slight hesitance in her movements when she handed them to him, like she wasnât sure if heâd even want them.
Why the hell wouldnât I? he thought bitterly, his jaw tightening. He shifted the jars to one hand, his free one dragging down his face. Damn it.
The easy confidence he used to have, -the kind that once let him charm anyone he wanted- was long gone, worn away by years of service that had left their mark on his body and mind. His scars, both visible and hidden, werenât just marks; they were reminders of a life split into before and after. He set the jars carefully on a stump, picking up his axe again and turning back to the log heâd been working on.
The first swing came down harder than necessary, the wood splitting with a satisfying crack.
What if Sam was right? What if she really did like him? What the hell would he even do with that? He couldnât imagine someone like her -a woman who baked pies for town festivals and brought plum jam out to the woods- being happy with someone like him. Someone who carried more baggage than he knew how to unpack.
The axe came down again, the sharp sound echoing through the clearing.
She deserved better than someone like him. Someone whole. Someone who didnât wake up in cold sweats or flinch at loud noises. Someone who could stand in a crowd without feeling like the walls were closing in. He couldnât even have a simple conversation without fumbling over his words like a damn teenager.
Another swing and the log finally gave way, splitting clean in two. He adjusted the pieces and started again, the rhythmic motion grounding him even as his thoughts spiraled.
And yet... there she was, walking through the woods just to give him something she thought heâd like. Her smile was genuine, her laugh soft, and for a moment, it had felt almost normal, like maybe he wasnât the broken mess heâd convinced himself he was.
Donât kid yourself.
The axe paused mid-air as his gaze flickered to the jars again. She wasnât just being polite, was she? There had been something in her eyes, something he didnât know how to name but felt keenly.
God, I used to be good at this, he thought, lowering the axe and resting his hands on the handle. Before everything went to hell, before the nightmares and the scars and the sense of being completely out of place in a world that had moved on without him, heâd known how to read people. Known how to charm them.
Now, he couldnât even tell if the kindest gesture heâd received in years was just... friendliness.
Bucky exhaled slowly, his grip tightening on the axe. He had no answers, only doubts, and a feeling in his gut that maybe, just maybe, he was about to screw this up like he did everything else.
----------
The afternoon sunlight filtered through the living room curtains as she sat cross-legged on the couch, her laptop balanced on her knees. She rubbed her temples and glared at the screen, rereading the same sentence for what felt like the hundredth time. The latest manuscript she was proofreading was a Highlander romance, complete with a Marie Sue, a couple of brawny warriors, and more plaid than a fabric store. It wasnât that she disliked the genre, but this one was so clichĂŠ-ridden it was almost impressive.
âAnd then his emerald eyes bore into hers, as if he could see the depths of her soul,â she read aloud, her tone dry. She let out a groan, rolling her eyes for what felt like the fiftieth time that day. âOf course he did.â
Still, it paid the bills. She took a sip of her now lukewarm tea and leaned back, debating whether to power through or take a break. Thatâs when a knock sounded at the door.
Her brows furrowed. Dorothy, the old lady he met at the general store, had mentioned bringing over some plant bulbs today, and it was her signature to show up unannounced. Closing the laptop with a sigh of relief at the distraction, she stood and padded to the door.
âDorothy, you didnât have to-â she began, opening the door with a welcoming smile, only to have the words die in her throat.
It wasnât Dorothy.
Bucky stood there, one hand gripping a well-worn toolbox and the other shoved casually into the pocket of his jeans. The red henley he wore was snug enough to highlight the curve of his shoulders and the breadth of his chest, but not enough to look like he was trying. His hair was slightly mussed, as if the wind had tussled it just before he knocked, and the faintest hint of stubble shadowed his jaw.
For a second, neither of them spoke. She blinked, her surprise evident, while he cleared his throat and offered a small, almost sheepish nod.
âHey,â he said, his deep voice tinged with a hint of hesitation. âI, uh... remembered you mentioned during the festival needing to fix a couple of roof tiles.â He lifted the toolbox slightly as if to emphasize his purpose. âThought Iâd stop by and take care of it. For the jam.â
It was a perfectly logical explanation, but the sight of him on her porch, looking like an ad for rustic competence, left her momentarily speechless.
She groaned inwardly, the warmth of embarrassment creeping up her neck as she registered her current state, an old pair of sweatpants and an even older shirt with a faded logo, complete with a jam stain right across the bosom. Great. Just great.
âYou didnât have to do that,â she finally managed, her voice brushing off the initial surprise as she tucked a stray hair behind her ear. âReally, itâs not that big of a deal.â
Bucky shrugged, the corner of his mouth twitching into a small, easy smile. âFigured I owed you one. Besides, itâs no trouble.â
Despite herself, her lips quirked in a smile as she stepped aside and gestured toward the side of the house. âWell, okay then. The tiles that need fixing are just over there.â
He nodded, his movements purposeful but unhurried, as he turned toward his truck. âIâll grab my ladder and get started.â
As he walked away, she shut the door with a quiet click and let out a soft exhale, leaning her forehead briefly against the cool wood. A glance down at her outfit made her wince. Nope. There was no way she was standing out there in this while Bucky Barnes fixed her roof looking like a walking ad for rugged, small-town charm.
She bolted for her room, tearing through her wardrobe with newfound urgency. A simple casual dress with a V neckline and cardigan was the winning combo, comfortable enough for an impromptu chat but still presentable. She smoothed the fabric over her hips and checked her reflection in the mirror, brushing her hair back into place before heading back to the living room.
The faint clink of metal outside signaled that Bucky was already at work. Feeling slightly more put-together, she made her way to the kitchen to make some lemonade, hoping she didnât look like she was trying too hard.
Once the lemonade was ready, she poured a glass, her movements steady as she tried to keep her thoughts from spiraling. It wasnât a big deal. Just a neighborly gesture to bring him something cool while he worked. Absolutely no ulterior motives, she told herself firmly, ignoring the tiny thrill that ran through her at the thought of talking to him again.
After tidying up a few things to stall for time, she finally stepped outside, the lemonade glass balanced carefully in her hand. The sun had warmed the air, and she spotted Bucky perched on the ladder, one boot firmly planted on a lower rung as he worked to secure a tile.
âHey,â she called out lightly, making her way toward him.
He glanced down, his hands pausing mid-adjustment. His gaze caught on her new outfit, lingering for a moment before flicking back to her face. She wasnât imagining it, the slight shift in his expression was hard to miss.
Feeling suddenly self-conscious under his sharp blue eyes, she offered the glass with a small smile. âThought you might want something to drink.â Then, in a rush of nervous energy, she added, âDorothy was supposed to drop by, so I figured I should look a little more... put together.â
His gaze flickered briefly to the neckline of her dress, the height of his vantage point affording a view to skin that other way should be concealed by cloth. For a split second, his focus lingered on the swell of her breasts before he forced his attention back to her face with an unreadable expression.
âThanks,â he said gruffly, reaching down to take the glass. His fingers brushed hers for a fraction of a second, the callouses rough against her skin, and she fought the urge to shiver at the contact.
âYouâre, uh, making good progress,â she said, nodding toward the roof as if that would distract from the warmth in her cheeks.
âNot much to it,â he replied, taking a sip. His Adamâs apple bobbed as he drank, and her eyes dipped of their own accord, watching the movement.
When he handed the glass back, their fingers brushed again, and she swore his hand lingered just a moment longer this time.
She lingered by the ladder, holding her glass of lemonade, the condensation cool against her fingers. âYou and Sam did a great job building the booths for the festival,â she said, her tone casual. âNot only a provider, huh? Seems like youâre quite the handyman too.â
Bucky glanced down at her, his lips twitching into a faint smile before he focused back on the tile he was securing. âIt wasnât just us. Plenty of other guys helped out.â
âStill,â she insisted, watching the muscles in his forearms shift as he worked, âitâs cool. You donât see that kind of dedication every day.â
He didnât respond right away, his grip tightening on the hammer. The compliment clearly unsettled him, and for a split second, his aim wavered. The hammer came down too close to his thumb, and he muttered a sharp curse under his breath.
âAre you okay?â she asked, stepping closer instinctively. Her brows knit together with concern as she watched him shake out his hand.
âPeachy,â he muttered with a gruff voice, though the faint pink creeping up his neck gave away his frustration, whether from the near miss or her watchful presence, she wasnât sure.
Her lips twitched at his tone, but she held back a laugh, not wanting to poke the bear. âAlright, then. Iâll leave you to it before I distract you into taking off a finger.â
He glanced down at her, his blue eyes sharp but not unkind. âYouâre not a distraction,â he said after a beat, his voice softer this time.
Her stomach did a little flip, but she forced herself to keep her tone light. âStill, Iâd hate to be the reason you get hurt. Let me know if you need anything else, okay?â
He gave a small nod, his gaze lingering on her for a moment longer before he turned back to his work, the tension in his shoulders easing slightly.
She stepped back toward the house, clutching the empty glass tightly as she crossed the threshold and shut the door behind her.
With a deep breath, she returned to the couch, her laptop waiting for her where sheâd left it. But even as she opened the screen and stared down the next line of plaid-covered Highlander melodrama, her thoughts drifted back to the man on her roof and the way his gaze lingered just a second too long.
---------
The knock at the door startled her out of the repetitive loop of her manuscript edits. Leaving the laptop on the coffee table, she stood, smoothing the fabric of her dress instinctively. When she opened the door, there he was, a faint sheen of sweat on his face and his toolbox in hand.
âAll done,â Bucky said, his deep voice a little quiet, as though he wasnât entirely sure how to say more. He gestured vaguely toward the roof with his free hand. âThe tiles should hold up fine now. No leaks to worry about.â
Her smile was warm as relief and gratitude washed over her. âThank you, Bucky. Really. That was so kind of you to come by and take care of it.â
He gave a small shrug, his lips twitching into a faint smile that didnât quite reach his eyes. âDidnât take long. Figured itâd save you some hassle.â
âStill,â she said, stepping back to open the door wider, âyou didnât have to. Can I at least get you something? Another drink, maybe?â
He hesitated, his hand tightening slightly on the handle of the toolbox. âYou donât have to-â
âI insist,â she cut him off gently, her smile unwavering. âPlease. Itâs the least I can do.â
After a beat, he nodded, stepping over the threshold with a cautious ease, as if unsure of how much space he was allowed to take up. She led him to the kitchen, motioning for him to sit at the small table while she poured a fresh glass of lemonade.
He sat stiffly, setting his toolbox carefully by his feet and rubbing the back of his neck. The kitchen smelled faintly of citrus and sugar, a scent that mingled oddly with the outdoorsy hint of sawdust and sweat he carried with him.
âHere,â she said, placing the glass in front of him before sitting across the table. âI hope itâs still cold enough.â
Bucky nodded his thanks, taking a sip. The silence stretched for a moment, not uncomfortable but loaded with unspoken thoughts. She was the first to break it.
âSo, how long have you been working with Sam?â she asked, leaning her arms casually on the table.
He set the glass down, his fingers lingering on the rim as he answered. âA few years. Helps keep me busy.â
She tilted her head, studying him with quiet curiosity. âDo you supply the rest of the workshops and stores too?â
Bucky let out a soft, humorless chuckle. âNot really, just a few. Donât think anyoneâs lining up to hire a guy like me.â
Her brows knit together. âI donât know about that. Youâre dependable, skilled... and clearly a good neighbor.â
Her words caught him off guard, and he looked down, a faint flush creeping up his neck. âJust doing what needs to be done,â he mumbled.
âMore than that,â she pressed, a hint of teasing in her tone now to lighten the moment. âIf I hadnât seen it for myself, I wouldnât believe how fast you fixed those tiles.â
Bucky shook his head, his lips twitching into that barely-there smile again. âItâs just a roof.â
âTo you, maybe,â she said lightly. âTo me, itâs one less thing to worry about. And I really appreciate it.â
Her sincerity left him quiet for a moment, his fingers tightening briefly around the glass. He glanced up at her, meeting her eyes. âYouâre welcome,â he said finally, with a low voice.
Another pause lingered between them, she smiled, leaning back slightly in her chair. âWell, if you ever need more jam -or a roof to fix- you know where to find me.â
He chuckled softly, the sound surprising even himself. âGuess Iâll keep that in mind.â
Their gazes held for just a beat too long before he stood, his hand already reaching for the toolbox. âI should get going.â
âOf course,â she said, standing as well, though she didnât move to rush him out. âThanks again, Bucky.â
As Bucky made his way toward the door, his gaze swept briefly over the living room, pausing on the open laptop resting on the coffee table. His steps slowed, curiosity flickering across his features. âWhatâs that youâre working on?â he asked, tilting his head toward the screen.
She followed his gaze and let out a soft, sheepish laugh. âOh, just... proofreading a manuscript.â
He raised a brow, the corner of his mouth quirking up slightly. âWhat kind of manuscript?â
Her lips parted as if she might dodge the question, but his steady, inquisitive look made it clear he wasnât letting this one go. âItâs, uh... a romance,â she admitted, her voice almost shy.
His brow lifted a little higher. âAbout?â
She hesitated, fidgeting slightly under his gaze. âItâs... okay, itâs one of those super cheesy historical romances. You know, with a rugged Highlander and a maid whoâs swept up in some dramatic, forbidden love affair.â Her words tumbled out in a rush, her cheeks warming as she spoke.
Buckyâs expression shifted. First skeptical, then mildly amused, and finally landing somewhere between disbelief and intrigue. âAnd that sells?â
âItâs a very popular topic,â She nodded, already cringing inwardly. âItâs... well, itâs got a lot of dramatic tension, flowery descriptions, and... other stuff.â
âLike what?â he asked, genuinely curious, his head tilting slightly as he leaned against the doorframe.
She bit the inside of her cheek, debating how much detail to share. âYou know... dramatic misunderstandings, passionate declarations, epic sword fights... and, uh...â She trailed off, waving her hand vaguely. âOther... things.â
âOther things,â he repeated, his lips twitching like he was trying not to smile. âYou mean... the spicy stuff?â
Her cheeks flamed, and she groaned, covering her face with her hands. âYes, okay? That stuff. Happy now?â
He chuckled making her peek at him from behind her fingers. âDidnât take you for someone whoâd spend their day reading about shirtless Highlanders sweeping maids off their feet.â
âI donât spend my day reading it,â she shot back, lowering her hands to glare at him, though her expression was more embarrassed than angry. âIâm proofreading. Thereâs a difference.â
âRight,â he said, dragging the word out like he wasnât entirely convinced. âSo youâre not secretly daydreaming about a plaid-wearing, hero coming to whisk you away?â
âAbsolutely not,â she replied firmly, though the faint crack in her voice betrayed her mortification.
He smirked, finally stepping back from the doorframe. âGood to know.â
She crossed her arms, watching him as he moved toward his toolbox. âNot that youâre one to judge,â she called after him. âYou seem to know an awful lot about what goes on in those books for someone whoâs never read one.â
That stopped him in his tracks. He turned back, his gaze narrowing slightly, though there was still a glint of amusement in his eyes. âI have a sister,â he said simply, as though that explained everything.
Her mouth opened, then shut, caught off guard. âTouchĂŠ,â she murmured, conceding the point. Still, she couldnât let it rest. âBut honestly, this one is so bad, I donât get how the editors went along with it.â
His curiosity piqued, and Bucky tilted his head. âAnd whyâs that?â
âItâs just... so cheesy,â she said, her voice dipping with exaggerated drama. âWay too fluffy, the guy wonât stop talking about his feelings, and heâs clingy in a way that makes me cringe.â She shuddered a little for effect.
Bucky raised a brow, his thumb absently tapping against the handle of the toolbox. âSo... that makes it bad for the genre? Or is that your personal taste talking?â
She blinked, thrown off by the question. âI-what?â
âI mean,â he continued, leaning casually against the doorframe, âarenât romance novels supposed to be... you know, emotional? Feelings and all that? Or is it just not your thing?â
She frowned, his thoughtful tone making her pause. âI guess... itâs not the emotions that bother me,â she admitted, her arms crossing loosely. âItâs the way itâs written. This guy is just so... over the top. Heâs constantly swooning over her, saying how sheâs his whole world, his sun and stars... itâs too much. Like, tone it down, man.â
Buckyâs lips twitched, and he gave a small, thoughtful nod as if chewing over her words. âSo, youâre more into the... brooding types?â
Her face warmed slightly at the observation, but she shrugged, trying to play it cool. âMaybe. I like characters who... donât lay it all out at once. You know, someone with a little mystery.â
A long silence stretched between them, his gaze lingering on her as if trying to read between the lines. âSounds like itâd be tough to figure out what theyâre thinking.â He observed.
She raised a brow at that, tilting her head. âSometimes actions speak louder than words, you know.â
Bucky seemed to consider that, his fingers flexing lightly around the handle of his toolbox. He nodded once, then glanced toward the door. âWell, Iâll let you get back to your... highlander drama.â He shifted his weight, toolbox in hand, and turned toward the door. But as he stepped through, he hesitated, glancing back. âHey,â he said, his tone quieter now, almost hesitant. âIf, uh... if you ever need something else, just let me know.â
She smiled âI will. The same goes for you, thanks again.â
He nodded, a small, almost shy tilt of his head, before stepping fully out the door. She stood there for a moment, staring after him as the faint crunch of his boots faded down the path. The quiet of her house enveloped her as she closed the door, replaying snippets of their conversation.
She had barely made it back to the couch when her phone buzzed. The screen lit up with a text from Sam:
Hey, Iâm grilling tonight. You should come by. No excuses.
A smile tugged at her lips. The idea of stepping out, getting off her screen, and being around people sounded better than staying cooped up with plaids and cringy lairds. She quickly texted back her agreement.
The gathering was small, just a handful of locals chatting around the glow of the garden lights and the firepit, the scent of burning wood mingling with spiced cider in the air.
She wasnât expecting to see Bucky there, given he wasnât the social type but there he was, standing slightly apart from the crowd, his hands shoved into his pockets as he listened to a conversation between Sam and another neighbor.
She hesitated, her pulse quickening at the sight of him. Sam spotted her, waving her over. âHey, glad you made it! Câmon, grab a drink.â
She made her way to the table laden with snacks and drinks, feeling Buckyâs gaze on her as she poured herself some cider. When she turned, he was standing just a few steps away, his expression unreadable in the flickering firelight.
âHey,â she said, her voice a touch breathless. âDidnât expect to see you here.â
His lips quirked in a half-smile. âSam can be... persuasive.â
She laughed softly âYeah, heâs good at that.â
They stood there in companionable silence for a moment, and then, as someone started strumming a guitar on the other side of the yard, Bucky glanced at her, his blue eyes glinting with something she couldnât quite place.
âWalk with me?â he asked, with a low but steady voice.
Surprised, she nodded, and they left the noise and light of the gathering behind, stepping into the quiet shadows of the trees that bordered Samâs property.
As they walked, the only sounds were the crunch of leaves underfoot and the distant chords of the guitar. Finally, he spoke.
âIâve been thinking,â he began with a cautious tone like he was testing the waters. âAbout what you said earlier. About liking... brooding characters.â
She blinked, caught off guard. âOh?â
His gaze stayed forward, but his hands fidgeted at his sides. âGot me wondering if you really meant that. Or if you were just... making conversation.â The vulnerability in his voice sent a wave of warmth through her.
âI wasnât just making conversation,â she admitted softly.
He stopped walking, turning to face her fully. The firelight was distant now, casting only the faintest glow, but she could still see the intensity in his expression. âGood,â he said, his voice rougher now. âBecause I donât want to keep wondering.â
Before she could respond, he stepped closer, his hand brushing hers, tentative but deliberate. And when she didnât pull away, he leaned in, his breath warm against her skin as his lips captured hers in a kiss that was both hesitant and deeply certain, as if heâd been waiting for this moment far longer than he dared to admit.
She melted into him, her hands sliding up to his shoulders. That small gesture gave him all the permission he needed. Tilting his head, he traced the seam of her lips with his tongue, a gentle yet deliberate request. She parted her lips for him, granting entrance, and he deepened the kiss with a low, quiet sigh that sent warmth spiraling through her.
His hand slid to the curve of her lower back, pulling her closer, while the other found its way to her nape. His fingers tangled gently in her hair as he cradled her. Their kiss broke slowly, reluctantly, his lips brushing hers one last time as if he couldnât quite let go. Bucky lingered close, his breath warm against her cheek, his nose skimming along her jaw before dipping to her neck. He pressed his face there, inhaling deeply, and his quiet, teasing voice sent a shiver down her spine.
âThis too clingy for you?â
A soft laugh escaped her, though it dissolved into a breathy sigh as she tilted her head, exposing more of her neck to him. âShut up,â she murmured, her fingers threading through his hair, keeping him close. Whatever witty retort she might have had melted into nothing as he pressed a lingering kiss to her pulse point.
Buckyâs lips lingered against her neck for a moment longer before he pulled back just enough to look at her. His fingers at her nape flexed, and then his gaze dropped briefly to her lips. Her heart stuttered as he closed the distance again, this time more demanding. His mouth claimed hers in a kiss that was deeper and hungrier. Gone was the tentative sweetness, this was need, raw and unrestrained. His hand slid from her lower back to her hip, splaying wide, pulling her flush against him as if he needed to eliminate even the smallest gap between them.
Her fingers tightened in his hair, tugging just enough to draw a low, throaty sound from him that sent a thrill through her. She arched into him instinctively, and his hand slid down to the hem of her dress, his fingers brushing her bare thigh. His touch was deliberate, teasing, but his restraint was evident. Her hands left his hair, sliding down to his chest, the soft flannel brushing her palms before she gripped the fabric and tugged him closer. He responded instantly, groaning softly into her mouth as the hand on her nape angled her tighter against his lips.
When they finally broke apart, their breaths mingling in the charged silence, he pressed his forehead to hers. Neither of them moved to step away, the distant chatter and laughter around the grill fading into the background. The weight of unspoken need between them was palpable.
âWe should...â she started, her voice catching slightly. Then, more firmly, âWe should go somewhere.â
His head lifted slightly, blue eyes dark as he searched hers for a beat before a slow smile tugged at his lips, agreeing with a low voice.
Without another word, he took her hand, intertwining their fingers briefly before leading her away. They drifted toward the edge of the yard with casual ease, their steps slow enough to avoid suspicion but quick enough to betray their shared urgency. Once theyâd slipped into the cover of the trees bordering Samâs property, she turned to him, their bodies close in the dim light of the evening. âYour truck or...?â
Buckyâs brows shot up at the suggestion, and for a moment, the idea tempted him, briefly, wildly. Considering the insistent ache in his jeans, the thought held undeniable appeal. But then, reason settled over him like a cool breeze. Not like this. Not tonight.
His lips quirked into a lopsided smirk, and he leaned in just enough that his voice sent a shiver through her. âYour place,â he murmured, low and deliberate.
The shift in his tone left her breathless, her pulse hammering against her skin as her cheeks warmed. She nodded wordlessly, her hand tightening slightly around his as they moved with quiet purpose. The path back to her house felt electric, each step charged with anticipation.
As the door clicked shut behind them, Bucky turned sharply, cornering her against the solid wood. His hands framed her face as his lips captured hers again, more demanding this time, his body pressing into hers with a heat that left no room for misinterpretation. She gasped softly into the kiss, the feel of his hardon against her stomach sending a jolt of desire through her.
Her fingers tangled in his long hair, tugging just enough to make him growl low in his throat. The sound vibrated between them, primal and electrifying. He broke the kiss just enough to murmur, his voice gravelly, âWhereâs the bedroom?â
She pointed vaguely down the hall, her breath hitching. Before she could blink, his strong hands were gripping her waist, and he effortlessly threw her over his shoulder in one smooth motion.
A surprised squeal left her lips, and she braced herself against his back, her fingers gripping the fabric of his shirt. His hand splayed firmly over her rear to steady her, his voice teasing but thick with intent. âEasy there,â he said, the words curling with a hint of amusement.
He strode purposely through the hallway, and when they reached the bedroom, he set her down on the bed with surprising care, though his gaze was anything but gentle. He stood over her for a moment, taking her in, the way her hair fell wild around her face, her lips swollen from his kisses, her chest rising and falling with anticipation.
His tongue flicked over his bottom lip as his eyes darkened. âDamn,â he muttered, his voice hoarse with hunger, âyouâre a sight.â
She shifted slightly under his intense stare, a flicker of shyness creeping in her despite her arousal. The way he looked at her, so unapologetically hungry, made her feel exposed. His lips quirked slightly as if sensing her hesitation, and he leaned down, his hand coming to rest against her jaw.
âYou okay?â he murmured, his voice softer now but no less intent.
She nodded, her breath hitching as his thumb brushed along her cheek. âYeah,â she whispered.
âGood,â he replied, his lips curving into a faint smile before he kissed her again. This time, it was slower, deeper, his tongue sweeping against hers in a way that left her clinging to him, her earlier shyness melting into the heat of his touch.
Her fingers found his shirt, tugging at the hem, and he pulled back just enough to strip it off, tossing it aside without ceremony. The scars on his chest and arm caught the dim light, but the confidence in his gaze never wavered as he leaned back in, his hands sliding down her sides with deliberate, teasing slowness.
Her teeth sank into her bottom lip as her eyes roamed over him, the sheer breadth of his chest and the powerful arms flexing with restrained strength. He was a bear of a man, solid and unrelenting, and she loved every bit of it.
âYou know,â he began, his voice low and rough, his fingers deftly popping open the buttons of her dress one by one. âI love seeing you in these dresses and skirts.â His lips quirked into a wicked grin, his gaze flicking up to meet hers. âMakes it so damn easy to get under them. Have my way with you.â
Her cheeks burned at his words, a mixture of arousal and shyness bubbling to the surface. âBucky...â she breathed, but her protest was feeble at best, especially as he continued his slow, deliberate assault, parting the fabric of her dress to expose more of her skin.
âThat one you wore at the festival,â he went on, his tone darkening with heat as he leaned closer, his lips grazing her collarbone. âThat vintage-looking thing? Sweetheart, it drove me crazy.â
She gasped softly as his hands slid over her hips, his thumbs tracing patterns against her bare skin. âCrazy how?â she managed to ask, her voice trembling under the weight of his attention.
He let out a low, throaty chuckle, his lips trailing down to the swell of her breasts. âCrazy enough to want to bend you over the booth table,â he murmured, his teeth scraping lightly against her skin, âand fuck you right there. Pies, jam⌠didnât care. Wouldâve made a mess of it all just to get my hands on you.â
A desperate whimper slipped past her lips as heat pooled low in her belly. Her hands slid into his hair, tugging slightly.
He growled softly at the sensation, pressing her back against the bed. His hands gripped the fabric of her dress and tugged it down her arms, exposing her fully to his gaze. âBut weâve got all the time we want now,â he said, his voice rough, his lips curving into a predatory smile. âAnd I plan to take my damn time.â
Her pussy clenched with anticipation as her mind whirled, trying to reconcile the quiet, awkward man sheâd come to know with this unabashedly vocal, commanding version of him. It was as though heâd been holding back all this time, and now, the dam had finally burst.
Her bra followed the dress, and his sharp intake of breath sent a fresh wave of heat coursing through her. His thumb traced the curve of her breast, slow and deliberate, before he leaned in, his lips hovering just above her skin.
âYâknow,â he murmured, his voice rough and teasing, âall I could think about this afternoon was pouring that lemonade on these.â His lips ghosted over her nipple, his breath warm. âThen drinking it straight off you.â
Her gaze widened, a sudden wave of shyness overtaking her. She let out a nervous laugh, pressing her hands over her face to shield herself.
âDonât hide from me,â he said firmly, his hand catching her wrists and gently tugging them away. His eyes burned with an intensity that made her stomach flip. âYou were the one who instigated our little escape from Samâs party, remember?â
His words sent a shiver down her spine, and she couldnât help the way her body arched toward him as his lips finally claimed the peak of her breast, his tongue swirling in deliberate, maddening strokes. Any remaining hesitation evaporated as he pressed his hips against hers, letting her feel just how much he wanted her.
âYou donât get to act shy now,â he muttered, his voice low and gravelly against her skin. âNot after everything youâve been driving me crazy with.â
Her voice came out barely above a whisper, trembling as she stammered, âI... I didnât do anything...â
Bucky pulled back just enough to meet her wide-eyed gaze, his lips curving into a wicked smirk. âOh, you didnât?â he drawled, his tone laced with teasing disbelief. His hand slid down her side, his calloused fingers leaving a trail of fire in their wake. âThat little dress at the festival? the lemonade with that neckline? The way you bit your lower lip every time we spoke? Sweetheart, youâve been doing everything.â
Her cheeks burned, her lips parting as if to protest, but no words came out. Instead, he leaned in closer, his nose brushing the curve of her jaw as he whispered, âAnd Iâve been trying real hard to keep my hands to myself... but now? Now, Iâm done trying.â
Her breath caught, and before she could respond, his lips were on hers again, claiming her in a kiss that left no room for doubt. His hands roamed her body with purpose, pulling her flush against him, his erection pressing firmly against her pussy.
Her fingers found their way into his hair again, tugging gently at the strands as he groaned into her mouth, the sound reverberating through her. âYouâre killing me, you know that?â he murmured against her lips, his voice rough and filled with longing. âAll Iâve been thinking about is this... you... for weeks.â He kissed her again, slower and deeper this time, as if savoring the moment.
âYou donât even know what youâre doing to me,â he rasped when they parted for air, his forehead resting against hers. âBut youâre about to find out.â
He left a trail of open-mouthed kisses down her body, his lips lingering on every inch of skin as if committing her to memory. When he reached the waistband of her drenched panties, he paused, his hands gripping her thighs firmly to keep her in place. Pressing his face against the soaked fabric, he inhaled deeply, a guttural groan rumbling from his chest.
âGod, you smell so good,â he murmured, his voice thick with hunger. His thumbs hooked into the sides of the delicate lace, slowly pulling it down her legs as he kept his eyes locked on hers. The intensity in his gaze made her pulse thunder in her ears. âYouâve been driving me insane,â he confessed, his lips brushing against her inner thigh as he tossed the damp fabric aside. âEvery time I saw you in those little dresses... I thought about this. About getting under that hemline and taste you.â
Her body quivered at his words, her fingers tangling in the sheets beneath her as anticipation coiled tight in her core. âBucky...â she breathed, her voice a plea.
âPatience,â he said again, his voice low and teasing, but there was no mistaking the edge of hunger in it. His hands spread her thighs further apart, thumbs pressing into the soft flesh as he held her open. His breath ghosted over her pussy, warm and tantalizing, making her gasp and clutch the sheets. âI want to take my time with you.â
And then his mouth was on her. His tongue dragged through her slick folds with slow, deliberate strokes, before barely retreating with a sinful hum. âFuck,â he groaned, âYou taste even better than I imagined.â He paused only long enough to meet her eyes, his own dark and full of promise. âAnd Iâve been imagining this for a long time.â
Her breath caught in her throat as he spread her pussy lips with his thumbs, baring her fully to him. His mouth latched onto her clit, his tongue swirling in lazy circles before he nursed it with intent. The sharp jolt of pleasure ripped a cry from her lips, her hips thrusting against his mouth involuntarily.
âBucky! oh, God!â she gasped, her voice trembling as he kept at it, alternating between sucking and flicking her sensitive nub with maddening precision. His growl vibrated against her, the sound and sensation drawing another moan from deep within her chest.
âStay still,â he commanded, pulling back just enough to speak, his lips glistening. The rumble of his voice sent shivers down her spine. âIâm not done with you yet.â
Two thick fingers joined the assault, sliding slowly into her wet heat, stretching her as they pressed in until they were knuckle-deep. She gasped, her walls clenching around him as he paused for a moment, letting her adjust before starting a maddening rhythm.
His mouth stayed on her clit, tongue flicking and circling in tandem with the slow, deliberate thrust of his fingers. The combination was overwhelming, a perfectly orchestrated symphony of pleasure that had her crying out his name, her thighs trembling as she struggled to keep still.
âFuck, youâre so tight,â he murmured against her, his voice filled with awe and lust. His fingers curled inside her, finding that sweet spot that made her hips jerk off the bed. âRight there, huh? Thatâs it.â
Her breathing turned ragged, her hands gripping his hair tightly as her body climbed higher and higher toward release. He didnât let up, his tongue and fingers working her with relentless precision, coaxing her closer to the edge with every stroke.
The orgasm tore through her like an electric shock, sharp and all-consuming. Her body clenched tight, her muscles locking for a heartbeat before releasing uncontrollable spasms. Her walls clenched around his fingers, her back arching off the bed as a sharp cry tore from her lips. He growled with satisfaction, his fingers slowing but not stopping as he rode her through her climax, his mouth pressing soft, soothing kisses to her inner thigh as she shuddered beneath him.
âThatâs my girl,â he murmured, pulling his fingers free slowly and bringing them to his lips to taste. His darkened gaze met hers, his tongue flicking out to clean the slick from his fingers. âYouâre fucking perfect.â
She barely had time to catch her breath before Bucky stood, towering over her, his eyes dark with intent. With a sharp tug, he kicked off his work boots, the thud of them hitting the floor making her jump slightly. Then came the metallic clink of his belt, the sound sending a thrill straight through her.
Her gaze was locked on him as he unzipped his jeans, the low rasp of the zipper making her stomach tighten. He tugged them down along with his underwear in one swift motion, revealing himself in all his glory. He was all broad shoulders and thick muscle. His broad chest and left arm were marred by scars that only added to the raw magnetism he exuded. And then there was his cock. Thick, hard, and so utterly intimidating that she bit her lip at the sight.
âLike what you see?â he asked, a lazy smile pulling at his lips.
She nodded, unable to form words as her cheeks flushed.
âGood,â he said, his hand wrapping around his shaft, stroking lazily as he took a step closer. âBecause youâre going to feel all of me.â
Bucky climbed onto the bed, positioning himself between her parted thighs. His hands gripped her waist, firm but careful, as though he might crush her if he wasnât mindful of his strength. His cock rested heavy and hard against her slick folds, the head teasing her entrance as he rocked his hips slowly, coating himself.
âSo wet,â he murmured, his voice a husky growl that sent a shiver down her spine. She moaned softly, her thighs trembling as the thick head of his cock pressed against her opening, the stretch beginning even before he was inside. He moved slowly, agonizingly so, letting her body adjust to his size inch by inch. Her walls fluttered around him as he filled her, her slick heat clenching tightly as he pushed deeper. Her hands gripped his shoulders, nails biting into his skin as her breath hitched. âOh my God, Bucky... youâre so-â
âBig?â he finished for her, his tone edged with dark amusement as he paused, fully sheathed inside her. He leaned down, his lips brushing her ear as he rumbled, âThatâs it, sweetheart.â
Her head fell back against the pillow as she panted, her body stretched to its limit, the delicious pressure bordering on too much. But as her hips shifted slightly, the friction sent a bolt of pleasure through her that made her moan his name.
Bucky groaned low in his throat, his hands sliding to her rear to tilt her hips upward. He withdrew slowly, almost to the tip, before thrusting back in with deliberate care. âFuck, youâre tight,â he murmured, his gaze locked on her face as he started to move in earnest.
His pace began slow and steady, each thrust measured, but it wasnât long before his control began to slip. His grip on her tightened as he quickened, the powerful thrusts rocking her body against the mattress. The sound of their bodies meeting filled the room, the wet slap of his cock driving deep into her pussy mingling with her moans and his guttural groans.
âHold on to me,â he ordered, his voice rough with lust. Before she could process his words, he hooked an arm under her ass and lifted her effortlessly, sitting crisscrossed with her perched in his lap.
Her arms flew around his neck, clinging to him as the new angle made him hit even deeper. His hands gripped her hips, guiding her movements as he thrust up into her, the force of his cock driving her wild. Her head fell forward, her forehead resting against his as she whimpered, overwhelmed by the intensity of the pleasure building inside her.
âLook at me,â he demanded. Her hazy eyes met his as he tilted her hips slightly forward, the firm muscles just above his shaft slapping her clit with every thrust.
She cried out, her nails raking down his back as the coil inside her tightened, ready to snap. âDonât stop, please donât stop!â
He groaned, his cock swelling even harder inside her as he chased her climax. âIâve got you,â he promised, his thrusts growing rougher, deeper. âCome for me, sweetheart. Let me feel it.â
Her orgasm hit her hard, her pussy clamping down on his cock as she cried out his name, her body trembling violently in his arms, and he growled in satisfaction.
âFuck, thatâs it,â he ground out, his movements growing erratic as her spasming walls pushed him closer to the edge. âYouâre mine, doll. Mine.â
With a final, deep thrust, he buried himself fully inside her, his cock pulsing as he spilled into her with a guttural moan. He held her tightly, pressing his forehead to her shoulder as they both panted, their bodies trembling from the intensity of their encounter.
For a moment, neither of them moved, the room filled only with the sound of their heavy breathing. Then, with utter gentleness, Bucky eased her back onto the bed, his body following hers as he stayed buried inside her. He braced himself on his forearms, keeping his weight off her but staying close enough that she could feel the warmth of his skin against hers.
A lazy smirk tugged at his lips as he glanced down at her, the faintest hint of mischief in his eyes. âSo,â he murmured, his voice low and teasing, âbetter than the breathtaking Highlander?â
Her breath hitched before she burst into laughter, making his smirk widen. âOh, so much better,â she stated, wrapping her arms around his neck and pulling him down for a quick, playful kiss. âI find the curt and gloomy lumberjack character more appealing.â
Bucky raised an eyebrow, his smirk faltering just slightly. âCurt and gloomy, huh?â
She nodded, her voice turning softer. âMysterious. Rugged. A little broody. Kind. Thoughtful. Handsome.â
He blinked, caught off guard by the weight of her words. A faint flush crept up his neck, blooming across his cheeks, and he glanced away, suddenly looking very much like the socially awkward man sheâd come to adore.
âDidnât know I was signing up for flattery,â he muttered under his breath, his ears reddening as he busied himself with brushing away a strand of hair hanging on his face.
She laughed and cupped his cheek, gently forcing him to meet her gaze. âJust telling the truth,â She said softly, her thumb brushing over his stubbed skin.
He swallowed hard, the blush deepening as his lips twitched into a shy, crooked smile. âStill not used to it,â he admitted quietly, his voice barely above a murmur.
âGuess Iâll just have to keep saying it until you are,â she replied with a grin, pulling him down for another kiss before he could argue.

Masterlist | Ko-Fi
Your fingers were wet from the condensation rolling off your glass of sweet tea, the steady stream of droplets splattering against your bare thighs. The day had been exhausting; the cattle were abnormally restless and decided to drift too far out in the fields. Hours riding Mac left your legs sore, and honestly, you just wanted to smoke your Marlboros and sip on your tea. With your boots kicked up on the porch railing and a cigarette between your lips, you were blissfully content.Â
That is, until your peace and quiet were shattered.
Dirt kicked up in the distance, and the steady rhythmic hum of an engine grew louder as it drifted closer to your house. You groaned in frustration, already knowing who to expect. Dear God, was Joel Miller relentless. You reached behind your porch chair, fingers curling around the shotgun propped up against the wood. You warned him.Â
His beat-up Red Chevy stopped beside your home, and you tracked his movements as he opened the door. Lifting the gun to your eye level, you aimed the barrel toward his truck. Your finger hovered over the trigger, steady and calm. Joel stepped out of the driver's seat, adjusting his belt buckle against his stomach. You wouldnât kill him; you werenât that mean, although it was tempting.Â
One quick pull of the trigger and you sent a warning shot into the side door of his truck, rupturing the metal with a resounding bang. Joel ducked down, letting out a startled grunt before turning his head to inspect the damage. Whipping head toward you, Joel stared you down with narrowed eyes.
âFuckinâ Christ,â he huffed. âThat how yâwelcome all your visitors?â
âOnly the ones who piss me off!â You shouted.
Joel ran a hand down his scruff, swaying in place as if deciding whether to approach you. Do it, you thought. He made one cautious step, and you rewarded him with another cock of your shotgun, the barrel loaded and ready to fire.Â
âTake it easy, darlinâ. I only wanted to come talk,â Joel cautioned, his hands raised in defeat.
âSânothinâ to fuckinâ talk about, Miller,â you said, your eye squinting down the barrel line.
Each step of his cowboy boots crunched the earth below, slow steps progressing forward. Joel walked to the edge of the porch; his shoulders hiked to his ears and arms still raised as if he were approaching a wild bull. Serves him right to be scared of you. You may have let him get the best of you the first time around, but you wouldnât let that happen again.
âCan yâput the damn gun down, darlinâ?â He barked.
âCan yâtake your ass back to your side of the pasture?â You tossed back.
The closer he got, the clearer his features became; the scruffy graying beard with small bare patches against his jawline, the worry lines deeply etched into his tan skin, and those damn brown eyes that plagued your thoughts night and day. You still thought about how soft they were when he looked at you before he left the stables, a kindness that flickered through the amber specks and filtered out that rage. It was truly unfair that such an insufferable man could be so damn handsome.Â
Joelâs boots knocked against the first step of the stairs, and your grip tightened around the shotgun. His eyes tracked your fingers as they flexed around the metal, your knuckles tense.
âI ainât take you for the murderinâ type,â he said cooley.
âReckon you donât know much âbout me to be assuminâ that. Who knows, maybe I got myself a pile of bodies lyinâ in the grass behind my house.â
A low chuckle rumbled through his chest as he advanced another step, still testing the waters with you. You rocked back in your chair, propping the heel of your boot on the railing for stability.Â
âWanna show me all them dead bodies then, darlinâ? Prove that youâre not all bark and no bite?â He smirked.
You angled the shotgun past the side of his head and sent a shot flying out into the yard. Joel flinched hard enough to knock himself into the stair railing, his weight jostling the porch. With a coy grin, you lowered the gun an inch and shrugged your shoulders.
âCanât show yaâ if youâre dead,â you grinned.
Joel lunged at you, ripping the gun from your hand and tossing it feet away from you. He gripped the back of your chair and drew his face closer, his pupils dilating the longer he glared at you. Rolling your tongue across your teeth, you raised your hand to his neck, drifting it up the scruff under his jaw. A shallow breath exhaled from his lips, and he stared at you in anticipation. Oh, he thought you were going to kiss him? Cute.
With a quick snap of your wrist, you smacked your hand across his cheek before shoving him out of your face. Joel barely moved an inch, your hands smacking into solid muscle that wouldnât budge. All that softness in his eyes was displaced with an unmistakable sense of rage, his friendliness shattering away as his cheek flushed from the impact.Â
âNow yâdone pissed me off, you fuckinâ brat,â Joel snarled.
His hand shot out to your throat, yanking you from your porch chair and to your feet. His grip was hardly as tight as last time but still forceful enough to render you powerless. Your eyes flickered toward the gun across the porch, so far out of reach and unattainable. You should have shot him when you had the chance.Â
âBe a good girl and invite me in,â Joel ordered, nodding toward your front door.Â
You wagged your head back and forth, your lips curled up and ready to spew venom. Joel only brought your face closer, his upper lip twitching under his mustache.Â
âDo it. Now. Or I swear to God, Iâll make last time look like a goddamn walk in the park.â
âSurprised yâgot any sex drive left in you, old man,â you gasped, his fingers tightening around your neck.Â
âChrist, you fuckinâ infuriate me,â Joel grumbled.
He used his grip on your neck to propel your feet backward, guiding you toward your front door and over the threshold. The heel of your boot snagged on the lip of the door, sending you flailing back, only for him to grab you by the waist and yank you forward into his sturdy frame.
Even with his hand wrapped around your throat, Joel had never looked more gorgeous than he did at that moment. Swimming through the rage inside his eyes was a hint of worry, as if he genuinely thought youâd stumble to the ground. The reaction time of his arm circling your waist and the small exhale of breath off his lips, a quiet I got you in his own way.Â
The moment dwindled as fast as it came, a flickering flame extinguished somewhere between the threshold and the entryway of your tiny farm home. Joel reverted to his aggressive tendencies, manhandling you onto your worn-down floral sofa. The springs beneath the cushions squeaked under the weight of your bodies as he pinned you down, his face a breath apart from yours.Â
âYou ready to play nice, darlinâ? Or am I gonna have to ruin that pussy again just to shut you up?â He questioned.Â
Your hands grazed over his torso, tracing the outline of his soft stomach and over the buttons traveling up toward the collar of his shirt. You watched Joelâs eyes flutter closed for the briefest moment, only to fly wide open as you sunk your nails into the hair at the nape of his neck. You tugged hard on his salt and pepper hair, enough so that his neck strained back.Â
âGet the fuck off me, Joel,â you seethed, the words snarling out between your teeth.Â
âWe both know that ainât fuckinâ happeninâ.â
Joel wrangled you over and onto your stomach, his hand still firmly clasped around your throat. He quickly caged your legs in between his muscular thighs, molding your body into the sofa cushions. Half your face was smothered into the dingy couch, your hair tossed in streaks over your eyes and clouding your vision. With his free hand, Joel cupped the curve of your ass, his fingers digging into the flesh that peaked out beneath the cut-off of the denim.Â
âYâstill got my handprints branded into your ass, darlin?â Joel asked.
He didnât care to know the answer as he smacked his hand down, the bite of his skin against the fabric sending electric jolts of pain up your spine. Truth was, the bruises he left were still thereâyellow, horrid welts that were a ceaseless reminder of last time. You wouldnât ever admit it, but sometimes you found yourself in the mirror tracing the outline of his fingerprints, fantasizing about his hands on your body.Â
âAnswer me,â Joel commanded.
âFuck you,â you said, your voice muffled into the couch.
âAlways gotta have an attitude, donât you?â
Joelâs hand connected with your ass again, this time hard enough to elicit a small whimper from your lips. You could deny it all you wanted, but it was making you unbearably wet. You squirmed under his grip, finding some sort of relief within the friction of your shorts. Joel caught onto your movements and chuckled at your lost efforts.
âGot you all riled up, huh? This sweet lilâ pussy need takinâ care of?â
He cupped your sex through your jeans, the roughness of his hand spurring you on even moreâstupid body for responding the way it did to this man. Joel pressed his fingers against the seam of the denim, finding your swollen clit hidden beneath. You exhaled loudly, your body sagging further into the cushions as he rubbed rough circles over the aching bundle of nerves.
âRight there, darlinâ? That feel good for you?â Joel taunted.Â
âMhmm,â you whined.
âYou wanna cum for me?âÂ
You sunk your teeth into your bottom lip, holding back the plea for release. Joel knew what he was doing; he knew you wouldnât beg. You were too stubborn and too defiant to ever beg for it. At least, not again. But his fingers worked fasterâharderâkeeping you on the edge of ecstasy the longer you stayed silent.
âCâmon,â he urged. âAsk nicely, and Iâll let you cum.â
You turned your head into the sofa, burying your face into the cushions as you let out a frustrated cry. Fuck this man. Fuck his ability to turn you pliant and easy. Your body bucked against his hand as he worked at you in tantalizing movements, the friction of his palm against your sex becoming dizzying.Â
âPlease,â you muttered, your voice muffled and quiet.
Joelâs hand unwound from your neck, taking its place within the tresses of your hair. A swift tug back, and your eyes strained to meet his as he loomed over you.Â
âI didnât hear you,â he growled.
You swallowed thickly, trying to form another plea, but you couldnât make a sound. Joel tugged on your hair harder, enough to make you cry at the pain. Your nails dug into the couch, and you managed a small please through a strangled moan.
âToo bad, darlinâ. Bratty lil sluts donât get to cum. I just wanted to hear yâbeg for it.â
He released his grip on your head, shoving you back down. You groaned in frustration as his hand vanished from between your legs. The couch shifted beneath you as Joel rose to his feet, wandering around your living room and into your kitchen.Â
âWhereâs your smokes?â He asked, rifling through the drawers as if he owned the place.
You lifted yourself, stretching your neck and detangling your hair with your fingers. Your clit painfully throbbed against your panties, your core still fluttering from the phantom orgasm that never came. Joel continued his search, slamming drawers shut and opening cupboards without a care in the world as if he didnât just have you pinned down and begging for release. The temptation to run out and grab your gun was thrumming inside your veins; just one shot and youâd be free of him. Joel glanced up at the exact moment you shot to your feet, gunning for the door.Â
âDonât even think about it, darlinâ,â Joel warned.
âYou expect me to let you roam âround my house uninvited?â You questioned.Â
âI expect you to be a good host and find me a damn cigarette,â he snapped.Â
âWell, theyâre on my porch. So, if youâll let me leave for a damn second, I can bring you one.â
Joel leaned against the kitchen counter, considering you with eyes narrowed. You folded your arms over your chest and stared at him, both of you in a silent showdown. With a lift of his chin, he motioned for you to go ahead and retrieve them. Disappearing out onto the porch, you scooped up your pack of reds and lighter, lingering an extra moment as you considered the gun lying on the ground.
âIâm waitinâ!â He called from inside.
âChrist, I fuckinâ hate you,â you said, walking back into the house.
Joel had made himself all too comfortable on your couch, his legs spread open and arm lazily draped over the back cushion. You immediately noticed the bulge in his jeans, a telltale sign that he was just as worked up as you were. Tough fucking luck. If he wouldnât get you off, you wouldnât help him either.Â
âYâ hate me, huh?â Joel asked, his lips curving into a smug grin.
You didnât respond as you smacked the bottom of the cigarette carton against your palm. Joel flicked his fingers, urging you closer, yet you stayed planted to the ground.Â
âGonna give me one of those, darlinâ?â
âWhy should I?â You huffed. âYâcome into my home uninvited and act like you own the damn place. Actinâ all demandinâ and rude.â
Joel let out a low whistle, rolling his neck back and forth. You continued smacking the carton, your lips set in a firm line.
âWhatâs rude is tryna kill someone who only came to talk. So, come here and sit.â
âAnd if I donât wanna?â
âFor one goddamn minute, can yâjust not be so fuckinâ stubborn?â Joel huffed.
âFine.â
You strode toward the couch, aiming to sit beside Joel, only to have him wrap an arm around your waist and pull you into his lap. Your thighs pressed against his as you settled into his body, the rugged muscles of his legs flexing beneath you. You were too close to him, too aware of the way his eyes sparkled with rich amber flecks in this nearness. Joel studied you without an ounce of anger as if none of what had happened between you ever existed. It made it terribly hard to continue hating him when he looked at you that way.
âYâgonna be a good girl and give me a smoke now?â Joel asked.
Rolling your eyes, you removed a cigarette from the carton, offering it to him. Joel only shrugged, parting his lips ever so slightly to invite it into his awaiting mouth. Your fingers brushed against the scruff of his jaw as you placed it between his lips, his mouth quirked up in satisfaction.Â
âYou trust me with a light?â You questioned.
Joel squeezed your waist softly, his other arm still thrown across the couch. You twirled the lighter between your fingers, your thumb rolling over the sparkwheel haphazardly. One good flick of the lighter, and you could send him up in flamesâburn your whole house down with him inside, and youâd finally be at peace. He was a ceaseless man with little regard for you or your damn peace, and you were growing tired of entertaining him.
âLight it,â he ordered, the cigarette hanging between his teeth.
You sparked the flame, letting the heat of it ripple over your skin as you brought it to the butt of the cig. The tip ignited with a flicker of embers, the cherry end burning bright as Joel took a long drag. He lifted his hand from the couchâstill keeping one firm on your bodyâand situated the cigarette between two fingers.
âWanna tell me where yâlearned to shoot like that?â He asked, his head tilted to the side.
âMy parents. They taught me everything I know,â you admitted.
âEverythinâ aside from manners,â Joel countered.
âShut up,â you snapped. âI ainât gonna sit here and let you speak of my parents like that.â
You didnât like talking about them; the reminder of their absence was sometimes too much to bear. You had so many responsibilities thrown onto your shoulders when they died, and although you took those responsibilities willingly, it didnât quell the grief still lingering. You didnât have your parents anymore, but you had their land to care for and their wishes to uphold.Â
Joel took a sharp inhale from the cigarette, letting the smoke plume between your faces. The stench of smoke was something comforting to you, always had been, but coming from his mouth, it pissed you off.Â
âHey, now,â he said softly. âWas only kiddinâ, darlinâ. Didnât mean to strike a nerve.â
âYour entire presence strikes a fuckinâ nerve, Joel. Why are yâeven here?â
âLike I said, I came here to talk.â
You pulled the cigarette from his lips, taking it to your own and inhaling a long drag. Joel arched a brow, watching as you hollowed your cheeks around it, the flicker of the butt burning brightly in his face.Â
âThen talk,â you hissed, tilting your head to exhale the smoke.
You leaned back, discarding some of the ashes against the tray on your coffee table. Joelâs hand urged you back to his chest, pinning you closer than you wished to be. You adjusted yourself on his lap, absentmindedly, shifting your body over his hardened cock. Joel choked on a breath, his fingers digging into your waist. Oh. Funny how you had all the power now.Â
âTalk,â you repeated, grinding your body down against his again.
âI know what youâre doinâ,â Joel grumbled.
âYâgonna talk or what, Miller? Iâm waitinâ.â
Joel cursed under his breath, grabbing the cigarette from your fingers and returning it to his lips. His eyes never left yours as he drew in a breath, letting the smoke linger inside his mouth a second too long before exhaling. The smoke billowed around your face, and you scrunched your nose in annoyance.Â
âI wanna negotiate,â Joel offered.
âNo.â
It was a quick response, one without a second thought. You wouldnât even entertain the idea of negotiations. Why? Because there was nothing to fucking negotiate. This land was yours, passed down through generations, and would remain that way. No amount of bitching and moaning from Joel would make you reconsider.Â
âYâdidnât even let me finish,â Joel remarked.Â
âI donât need to listen to you. I ainât negotiating my land.â
You reached for the cigarette again, yet Joel suspended it in the air and out of reach. You glared at him, trying to grab his hand to drag it toward you. Joelâs strength outweighed yours, and he had you beat every time you tried aiming for it again. Shoving at his chest, you moved to swing a leg over his lap and climb off, but he dragged you right back to his chest. His hand roamed up your side, curving along your hip and over the swell of your breast. Cupping your face with one large hang, Joel squeezed your cheeks together and forced your lips to part.Â
You struggled against his grip, your eyes full of rage as you watched him take another drag of the cigarette. With your mouth partially open, he leaned close and blew the smoke over your lips and into your mouth. The fragrant odor of the smoke licked up your nose as you inhaled, your lips inches away from his. You didnât like it. You didnât want him close. Joelâs eyes bounced between your eyes and lips, the temptation of drawing you closer palpable in his body language. The nicotine buzzed inside your head, and you pulled away from his face right at the same moment he leaned closer.Â
âDonât,â you warned, smoke exhaling from your lips.Â
Joel dropped his hand from your face, a clear shift in his mood arising as you watched his eyes flicker with disappointment. It was all over his face: the furrow between his brows, the downturn of his lips⌠He wanted to kiss you. You wouldnât let him, though; that was too much. If he wanted to manhandle you and fuck you however he pleased, that was fine. You welcomed it, actually, because you knew one taste of his mouth, and youâd be ruined. You didnât want intimacy with Joel, not when your familyâs land was hanging in the balance. Heâd reel you in with false pretenses and have you aching for more, only to tear it all away.
He cursed under his breath as he pressed his body to yours, leaning forward to discard the cigarette into the ashtray. The bulge beneath his jeans prodded your sex at this angle, eliciting a ripple of pleasure up your spine. A small gasp bubbled out of you as Joel readjusted himself beneath you.Â
âYou donât wanna talk?â Joel asked, raising his voice. âFine. Better not say a damn word unless itâs my name while I fuck you.â
In a millisecond, Joel had you pinned down to the couch again, your hair splayed around you and your breath whooshing from your lungs. His fingers worked at the zipper of your jeans, yanking them down your legs and discarding them over his shoulder. Propping a knee onto the couch, Joel undid his belt buckle and freed his cock from the confines of his jeans. Precum glistened on the tip, and he stroked himself slowly as he pulled your legs apart, molding you into the position he desired.Â
âOnly wanna hear yâscream my name. Yâunderstand that?â He growled.Â
Joel coated the head of his cock with the slick covering your folds, pushing himself in with one deep thrust. You groaned, squeezing your eyes shut as your body adjusted to his size. This angle was so much different than last time, and you could feel every vein and ridge of his cock rub against your fluttering walls. You focused on your breathing while he plunged deeper, breaking you open and fucking into you with hard thrusts.Â
Caressing the back of your knee, Joel drew your leg up and over his shoulder, bending you in half until he was spearing into your core.Â
âLook at me,â he ordered.Â
You shook your head, whimpering at the sensation of his cock splitting you in half. Searing pain bloomed across your face as Joelâs hand connected with your cheek. Your eyes shot open, tears welling on your waterline, the sting of the pain churning into a wave of pleasure through your core. You forgot how addictive his touch could be when he was angry. His pupils swallowed the entirety of his eyes, a dark, endless abyss staring straight back at you.
âDo. You. Understand?â He grunted between thrusts.
You didnât respond, a tear slipping down your cheek. The phantom touch of his fingers on your skin lingered still, and your clit throbbed with a sudden flurry of arousal. Joelâs hand wrapped around your jaw, forcing your mouth open. He leaned down, pressing his weight into you as his face neared yours. A trail of spit fell off his tongue and crashed into the back of your throat, and you flinched away from Joel as he pressed harder.Â
âSwallow, brat.â
You struggled to swallow it; your throat constricted as his grip around your jaw tightened. He plowed into you, drilling your core with violent strokes until a gargled wail left your mouth. His spit slid down your throat, and he hummed in approval.Â
âGood girl.â
He stretched your other leg up and over his shoulder, your ass lifting off the couch. You wanted to beg him to stop, yet nothing would leave your lips. Not even a sound as the noise of his hips slapping against yours filled the air. The thrum of your heartbeat vibrated through your chest, the pressure inside your stomach growing stronger as you propelled closer to the edge of your orgasm. Every muscle in your body grew taut, your clit aching to be touchedâŚaching for relief from the violent flames lapping at your spine. So close. It was so close you craved for more.Â
Maybe you didnât want him to stop.Â
âIf you ainât gonna listen to me in a normal conversation, then youâre gonna listen now,â he gritted.Â
You flexed your jaw under his hand, trying to shy away from his piercing stare. You didnât want to look at him, didnât want to listen⌠didnât want anything but the opportunity to seek release. You could handle the painâyou welcomed it. The harder he fucked you, the less you had to think. And if you kept thinking, youâd drown in the consequences of your doubt. Keep him angry, you thought. Keep him the enemy. You couldnât let him be anything more.Â
âI donât want your land,â Joel punched out through clenched teeth. âKeep it. I donât give a shit.â
The buzzing inside your skin dulled out at his words. It was so hard to focus on what he was saying when your mind was melting from the inside out, his cock driving into you with brutal speed. He didnât wantâŚ
âWhat?â You choked out.
Joelâs hand clamped down on your mouth, muffling your words as he bottomed out and kept himself seated inside you. The rhythm of his thrusts stopped, and he let his hips press into yours as he stared down at your tearful face. You were so fucking full of him you couldnât breathe.
âListen,â he snapped.Â
You muffled out his name, the sound slipping through the space between his fingers. He only pressed harder, your body folded in half beneath his weight. You clenched around his cock, rocking your hips slightly to quell the need curling inside your stomach.
âI ainât gonna take your land from you, âkay? All Iâm askinâ for is permission to come âround without you tryna kill me.â
No. The word was lost inside the palm of his hand. You wanted your land, and you wanted Joel gone. You didnât trust him when he said he didnât want your land. How could you trust him when he had you pinned to the sofa?Â
âThis is whatâs gonna happen,â Joel offered, snaking a free hand down between your legs. âYouâre gonna agree with me and let me come and go as I please. Then maybe Iâll let you cum.âÂ
Calloused fingers circled your clit, forcing a cry from your mouth. Tantalizing, slow draws over your sensitive bud pulled desperate sounds out of you, each one of them stifled against his warm hand. Joel worked himself into shallow thrusts, pulling out to the tip and driving right back into you. You couldnât fend off the orgasm bubbling under the surface, the nerves inside you lighting on fire.Â
âPlease!â You screamed between his fingers.
Joelâs lips twisted into a sneer, beads of sweat rolling down his temples as he pressed his fingers harder against your clit. Your eyes glossed over with fresh tears as you fought off the impending release rolling through your body.
âSay it.â
Your back arched off the couch as you chased the strokes of Joelâs fingers. Circling and circling⌠You were so close to the threshold of ecstasy, and you knew heâd tear it away from you if you didnât relent.Â
Joel ripped his hand from your mouth, tangling in the hair at the crown of your head. He forced your eyes down to where your bodies connected, your focus on his cock as it disappeared inside you.Â
âYâwanna cum on my cock, darlinâ?â Joel taunted.Â
âFuck! Please, Joel!â You gasped.
With your chin tucked into your chest, your legs dangling over his shoulders, and his cock spearing into your core⌠you couldnât hold back your orgasm any longer.Â
âSay it!â Joel commanded.
âOkay!â You sobbed. âJust let me cum, Joel! Please!â
Joel assaulted you with a repetition of thrusts, each stronger than the last, until your orgasm exploded through your body. His name tore from your lips as your back curved off the couch and your legs squeezed around his neck. He kept his thumb circling your clit, your orgasm never ceasing to end as the inferno burned inside your core. Wet, hot arousal gushed out of you, splattering onto Joelâs navel and staining his denim shirt. His eyes flicked up to yours, a wicked grin splitting his face.Â
âLook at the mess youâre makinâ. Just drenchinâ my fuckinâ cock.â
âJoel!â You whined, squirming against his hand.
âNuh uh, darlinâ. Wanna see how messy yâcan get. Keep goinâ.â
He released his grip on your hair, forcing your head to fall against the arm of the sofa. Shuffling his knees forward, Joel continued his brutal thrusts until your arousal sprayed around his cock and dripped down the seam of your ass. There wasnât enough air in your lungs as you alternated between screaming his name and begging him to stop.Â
âSince yâwanted to cum so goddamn bad, youâre gonna keep takinâ my fuckinâ cock âtil you ruin this damn couch,â Joel grunted.Â
You were crying⌠hard. Your mind was on the precipice of hysteria as waves of your orgasm bolted through your veins. Lewd sounds of his body slapping against your wetness echoed through the room, the cushion beneath you soaked from your arousal. You attempted to claw yourself backward and away from Joel, but his grip was violent, and he only yanked you closer.Â
âI canâtâI canât anymore!â you sobbed. âPlease, JoelâŚplease.â
âGimmie one more,â he demanded.Â
You shook your head in protest, your sobs hiccuping inside your chest. Your core was too fucked out, your clit was painfully sensitive, and you were sitting in a pool of your arousal. How did Joel manage to turn the events of the day around in his favor? You had control at the startâyou had the gunâ but now he had you folded in half and strewn out in a heap of tears.Â
âI canât!â You wailed. âToo muchâtoo muchâŚâ
âPoor thing,â Joel taunted. âAlways begginâ for it but canât take it.â
You writhed beneath him, your body twisting and bending to alleviate the painful sensations rolling through your nerve endings. This was it; this was how you died. Drunk on pleasure and torn apart by the man you wanted to hate.Â
Another orgasm tore through your body, consuming you from the inside out. Your scream pierced through the air, and you collapsed into the cushions, soaked with sweat and tears. Joel made a strangled noise above you as your sex clamped down around his cock, no doubt pulsating harder than it had the last several orgasms. His cock slipped from inside you, leaving you hollow and aching to be filled again. Your body craved the fullness, yet you sagged with relief knowing he stopped.
âCâmere,â Joel grunted.Â
He slung your legs off his shoulders and yanked you down the couch by your ankle. Positioned over your face, Joel stroked his cock above you, his fingers glistening from the arousal that stuck to his velvety skin.Â
âOpen that fuckinâ mouth, darlin',â Joel urged.Â
Your head was so hazy you hardly registered his words. Parting your lips, you whined softly and stared at himâŚwaiting. Joelâs eyes connected with yours, that deep furrow in his brow more prominent than before. Rage still sparked behind his eyes, but in your delirium, you saw more. You saw right past his facade, just as he saw right past yours. Whatever terror etched itself into your features, it caught his attention, but he was painting your lips and face with his release before he could decipher it. Hot ropes of cum spattered against your lips, the salty taste covering your tongue as it trailed into your mouth. Remnants of his release coated your chin and neck, warm reminders of his futile efforts at staking his claim.
He hadnât claimed you, no matter how hard he fucked you. You wouldnât let him claim you. And you most certainly wouldnât let him claim your land.Â
Joel slid his finger through the mess along your neck, scooping his cum onto the pad of his finger and dragging it across your lips.Â
âSo fuckinâ pretty all covered in my cum,â he praised.
âFuck you,â you whispered, though your words meant shit, as you rolled your tongue over your bottom lip.
Joel gave you a soft grin, smoothing down your hair and cleaning the mess off your face with one hand. The same hand that had inflicted pain just moments ago, the hand that brought you to release more times than you could physically endure.Â
But now the touch was softâcaring, even. And that frightened you more than the violence he showed when he was provoked. It was this side of Joel that made you scared, and you wanted to run as far from it as you could.Â
âLetâs get you up, darlinâ,â Joel said, hoisting you by the shoulders until you sat under his shadow.Â
He massaged your legs as you swung them over the couch, attempting to relieve the tension within your muscles. You shrunk away, standing on unbalanced limbs, and distanced yourself from his wandering hands.
âI need a shower,â you decided. âYâcan see yourself out.â
âI ainât done talkinâ to you.â
âWell, Iâm done fuckinâ talking!â You argued.Â
You spun on your heel, your hands clenched at your sides. Joelâs eyes stayed focused on you as he worked at stuffing his cock back into his jeans. Half-naked before him, you felt a million times smaller than you had when he arrived.Â
âWhy are you so hateful?â He questioned, rising to his feet.
Your lips curled up, a slew of spiteful words dancing on the tip of your tongue. But Joel wasnât finished.Â
âThis is your land,â he said, stepping closer. âI ainât gonna argue that anymore âcause itâs a lost cause. And I ainât tryna steal it from you. I can promise you that.â Another step closer. âSo, why do yâhate the idea of me cominâ around?â
âBecause I hate you,â you responded.Â
âYou hate me, huh? Is that how yâfeel âbout me when Iâm pullinâ orgasms from your body? âCause I think you fuckinâ love it. You love beinâ fucked by me. You get me all riled up âcause yâknow whatâs cominâ for you.â
âI hate you,â you repeated.
Joel lifted his hand to your face, cupping your cheek with a featherlike touch. You wanted to shy away, but you were too tired to move.
âI donât think yâhate me at all, darlinâ,â he whispered.Â
He leaned closer, placing a kiss on your forehead. You squeezed your eyes shut, holding off another round of tears brimming over the surface. Pushing your hands against his chest, you shoved Joel away, your body staggering back with the force of your action.
âGet the hell outta my house,â you cried, no longer keeping the tears at bay.Â
Joel stared at you with a pained expression, his eyes searching through your glassy eyes for the falter within your words. He didnât budge; he didnât move an inch. You shoved at his chest again, but it was no use as he wrangled you into his arms and lifted your chin to meet his eyes.
âWhen are you gonna quit fightinâ me?â He asked softly.Â
It was a sincere question; you saw it swimming behind the rich chocolate of his irises. Pleading. Begging. He wanted the truth, but you wouldnât give in. You couldnât.
âIâll quit fightinâ when yâlearn to leave me alone.â
âWhat if I donât wanna?â
He was a breath away from your lips, the rich scent of farmland wafting off his skin as it mixed with the smell of sex. It was intoxicating being this closeâclose enough to wonder what his lips would feel like on yours. While your body ached for him in one way, your heart ached differently. It was an ache you wanted to keep fighting because the moment you lost that battle, youâd lose everything.Â
âI donât want you cominâ here anymore, Joel.â
âWhy?â he pressed.Â
Silence blanketed over you, weighing down the words lodged in your throat. The rapid beating of your heart matched his as he kept you tight to his chest. You were suffocated by the emotions you couldnât say, and you were slowly sinking further down.Â
You struggled against the arm that bound around your waist, helplessly trying to break free of his hold. He finally relented in defeat, letting you shuffle back until there was a healthy gap between your bodies. Running a hand down the scruff on his chin, Joel gave you a simple nod and retreated toward the front door.Â
âUntil you can give me a reason, Iâm gonna keep cominâ back.â
He left without a glance over his shoulder, the room around you shrinking in size without his presence looming over you. Searching for your shorts, you quickly dressed and hid behind the window curtains as you watched his truck rumble to life and speed down the dirt roads. There was no goodbye between you, and you knew there wouldnât be. Joel wasnât giving up, no matter how hard you pushed him away, and eventually, heâd win.Â
And you hated knowing the truth.Â
**
Behind the billowing dirt trail of his truck, Joel watched as your house faded from view. His knuckles were white around the steering wheel as he thought about the way he left. He was doing this for fun; at least, thatâs what it felt like at the start. Getting on your nerves, pissing you off, seeing you completely unraveled underneath his hands, Joel loved it. He loved the thrill of having you tamed down and quiet, compliant to anything he asked and did.Â
Then he had you pinned underneath him, and he saw the fear in your eyes. You werenât scared of him. You were scared of the emotions electrifying between the both of you. Then you pulled away from him, denying him any affection, and he fucking hated it.Â
He couldnât understand why you got under his skin the way you did, nor why he cared so much. It wasnât supposed to end up this way, yet Joel wanted to keep tearing down your walls. He wanted to hear you tell him the truth.
He wasnât going to stop until he got it.

tw: for implied past emotional abuse, im in my feels today
"What the fuck were you thinking?" Hopper growls. He's not quite shouting, but he's still loud, raised voice echoing through the living room. "She's not ready to drive yet, I forbade it, and what? You two decided that you knew better?"
Eddie rolls his eyes, but gamely keeps quiet. He knows Hopper's less upset with Ellie taking a spin through the parking lot and more upset about the property damage. Eddie's on her side though, that phone pole came out of nowhere. Must have been pretty rotted out too, to fall over that easily after a little love tap.
Ellie had done a damn good job fixing the huge dent in the bumper.
But if Hopper wants to be dramatic and chew everyone involved out, Eddie's not going to stop him. Whatever gets the guy's blood pressure back down.
"You're supposed to be responsible adults! Especially you, Steve!"
Rolling his eyes again, Eddie glances over, hoping to share a commiserating look with Steve.
Except Steve isn't looking anywhere but down, shoulders and spine ruler straight. Eddie stalls there, stuck on the way Steve's standing, tense from jaw down to his ankles, his hands balled into tight fists flat at his side, knuckles white. Hopper keeps ranting, pacing a wide circle in front of them, but Steve doesn't flinch, doesn't look up, doesn't react. It's like all the color has washed from him.
"Are you even listening?!"
"Yes, sir," Steve says tightly. He doesn't look up. Hopper keeps going.
Eddie watches as Steve's throat works to swallow, like he's choking. Like he can't breathe.
"Hopper," Eddie snaps. "Shut the fuck up."
Hopper whirls on him, livid, but Eddie's not looking at him, fixed on Steve as he reaches out. Tries to take Steve's hand, just holds his wrist when Steve can't unclench his fist, gentle as he touches him. Steve is tightly wound and trembling under his fingers.
When he looks, Eddie finds Hopper with deep regret on his face, struck silent. He doesn't say anything when Eddie leads Steve away, back out onto the porch. They sit on the swing, Eddie's arm around Steve's shoulders, rocking back and forth until the muscles loosen and Steve slumps, strings cut, into Eddie's side. They'll sit like that for a while more, watching the woods as the sun sets and listening to the dusk settle, crickets and cicadas and chats calling the moon up, filling their silence with nighttime music.
Later, Hopper will come out, temper cooled, and sit on Steve's other side. Will ruffle Steve's hair when Steve starts to stiffen. Will apologize when Steve eyes him warily.
Later, Eddie will scowl and glare, but ultimately keep quiet, unwilling to make the whole thing worse for Steve, another fight, another shouting match. Will stiltedly tell Hopper good night and take Steve home, wait patiently until Steve finally speaks, when he finally tells Eddie a little more and a little more, until Eddie's holding him tight.
That's later though. For now, he digs his heel into the porch, rocking them back and forth, and waits for Steve to breathe.

warnings & info: 18+, afab reader, NOT beta read lol (but nothing of mine ever is), college era art my love, friends to lovers, art and reader swim in their underwear lol, reader wears a bra, reader likes swimming, first time together, oral sex (reader receiving), p in v sex, safe sex (condom moment), art is a munch
summary: A group beach weekend sounded great- until Tashi and Patrick spent the whole drive bickering and the whole first night moments from pouncing on each other. Looks like you and Art will have to keep each other company.
â
âDonât let him scare you, heâs shit at board games. And card games. Just like heâs shit at tennis.â
You just blinked, eyes darting to Patrick to see how heâd react to Tashiâs dig. The nervous laugh to your left let you know Art was just as unsure as you were.
When Patrick had come to visit Tashi and suggested all four of you take a trip to a rental beach house, you knew being in close quarters with the both of them for a full 3 days would be interesting, at the least. You werenât about to pass up on the beach trip, though- not when Patrick was covering the rent.
What you didnât know was that they would be argue-flirting the entire way there, and every moment since youâd all arrived. It made sense, though- between Tashi rooming with you, Patrick not having a room since he wasnât a Stanford student, and his long stretches between visits, they hadnât had any time alone in a little over 2 months.
Their flirting was always a little angry- little jabs and remarks that would have made you wince if you were the target. For them, it just made the otherâs eyes linger on their partner's lips for a little too long.
Patrick licked his lips before he responded. âDo you ever talk about anything else?â He asked, a lazy half smile on his face.
Tashiâs comeback was almost immediate: âNot like you give me anything else to talk about.â She leaned back on her hands, eyes raking over him from top to bottom.
Patrick seemed to enjoy the scrutiny. He leaned forward, that lazy smirk changing into a playful grin. âYeah? I got something I could give you right now.â
Alright. That was your sign to go.
When you turned to Art, brows raised, he was already looking at you. You glanced from him to the door and back. You knew Patrick and Tashi would be on each other any second now, whether you two left or not, and you really didnât want to get caught up in it.
Art nodded.
Your âI think Iâm gonna call it a nightâ and Artâs âUh, me tooâ fell on deaf ears as you two scrambled out of the room. Art had barely shut the door behind himself before you could hear those two pounce on each other, the board game youâd been playing definitely scattered and forgotten.
It made you snicker, like a middle school boy. One glance at Art and he was laughing too, a hand over his mouth, his red stanford baseball cap the only thing keeping his hair from falling into his eyes as he shook.
More noises from the room- a crash, then the dull thud of something falling to the carpet. You winced through your grin, then made your way down the hall toward the front porch, beckoning Art to follow you.
Outside, you placed your arms on the railing, leaning entirely on the rickety wood. In the cool night air, you couldnât hear your roommate and her boyfriend getting it on like animals. You didnât blame them, even if the angry flirting style wasnât for you. If you had a partner who was always away, you knew youâd jump on them the moment they were in sight.
You glanced over as Art joined you, mimicking your posture. You knew there was a point, early freshman year, when heâd liked Tashi. It was hard to ignore how his smile dropped when heâd watch Patrick and Tashi reunite, thinking no one was watching. And you always recognized how lost he looked when he stared at her while the three of you had lunch- after all, you looked at him the same way.
Recently, though- over the year and a half youâd known the three of them- he was easing up on it. His smiles lingered long after he thought everyone had looked away. He didnât even notice when Tashi walked into the cafeteria until you waved her down to sit with you guys. And now, next to you, he was grinning at their antics instead of grimacing.
He seemed to be over it. If only you could be so lucky.
âLike⌠animals,â Art said, glancing over at you. You were caught so off guard, you didnât even remember to pretend you hadnât been staring.
âThatâs exactly what I was thinking!â You laughed, grinning. âThey definitely needed that. Did you hear them in the back of the car on the way down here?â
Art groaned. âOh my god, I thought they were gonna go at it right there.â He brought his voice an octave higher, lifting his chin in an imitation of Tashi that couldâve also passed for royalty- what was the difference, really. ââYou eat like shit. No wonder you play the same.ââ
Immediately, you dropped your voice, giving him a coy side smirk and raising one eyebrow. ââIâll tell you what Iâd rather eat.ââ
The two of you doubled over, howling in laughter. Then, another crash from inside. Escaping them was going to be harder than you thought.
âYou wanna head down to the water?â Art asked.
âSure,â you said, smiling wide when he gave you a mock bow and let you lead the way.
The roar of the waves was comforting as you got closer, sand covering your bare feet- neither of you remembered to grab shoes- and the salty air filling your nose. The walk was silent, and the few minutes you spent standing at the edge of the ocean was, too. You watched it reach out toward you, then retreat back into the glittering blue-black. At some point, you closed your eyes.
âIâve never swam in the ocean.â
Your eyes snapped open. Art was still looking out at the water, head tilted like an inquisitive puppy. The wind fought to ruffle the few curls that peaked out from under his hat. âNever?â You asked.
Art shook his head. âWe didnât really go when I was a kid, and I was way too scared, anyway. Then when I went with friends it was more about beach volleyball and drinking than actually swimming.â He looked over at you, then laughed. âIâm guessing from your face right now, you must love swimming in the ocean.â
You closed your mouth, which you hadnât realized had fallen open, and shook your head. âDo I?â His incredulous head shake made you smile. A beat of silence. âAre you still scared of it?â
He took a moment to answer, chewing on the inside of his cheek. Then he shrugged. âI donât know. Not too scared to try, I guess.â
âAlright, wanna try?â
Art just tilted his head at you. You gestured toward your clothes, then the ocean, then to him. You could see it in his face when he caught on. âIâm not going in alone.â
You only took a second to think about it before you were tugging your t-shirt off and tossing it on the sand between you two. Your shorts came soon after. You already had one foot in the water when Art called your name, laughing so hard he could barely say it.
You shrieked at the cold as it hit your stomach, then sunk down to your shoulders, getting the shock over with all together. When you turned back toward the sand, you saw a shirtless Art running toward you in his boxers, moonlight tracing his chest and shoulders. He still had that fucking hat on. It made you grin.
He didnât shriek when he hit the water, but he did take a lengthy inhale. You watched as he held his nose, screwed his eyes shut, and dunked himself up to his head. His hat bobbed just above the surface, and you picked it up and put it on yourself.
When he came back up, he shook his head, wet hair sending droplets flying. Art grinned, wiping water from his eyes and pointing at the hat on your head. âThief.â
You rolled your eyes. âNext time Iâll just let it float away then, idiot.â It only made him grin harder. You waved your arms back and forth through the water, the cold easier to ignore when you moved. âSo?â
âHm?â
âStill scared?â
Again, he thought about it for a moment. âNo, actually. I think Iâm okay.â
You hummed, bringing a finger to your chin in mock deep thought. âWhat if there are sharks? I think you should be scared of sharks, probably.â
âNah.â Art shook his head. âThe sharks should be afraid of me. Iâm the scariest thing here.â He lifted his arms out of the water to flex comically, chin lifted in comical pride.
You laughed, splashing him, making him yelp. âOkay, sure, macho man.â
âWhat, donât believe me?â
You shrugged, a smirk tugging at your lips.
Before you knew it, Art had his arms around your middle, lifting you and dunking you in the water back first, like a baptism. You had all of two seconds to scream, then shut your eyes and mouth. He let you up immediately, wading away from you and toward the sand as you resurfaced, spluttering.
âDonaldson!â you shouted, though your serious tone was undermined by your beaming face. Somehow, his hat stayed on your head.
Heâd gotten a little ways away from you, but you still had the advantage- you swam in the ocean every chance you got.
You surged toward him, biting back a cackle as his eyes widened in fear. You grabbed his shoulders, pushing off him and shoving him under the waves. He stayed under for a second- then two, then three, until you vaguely started to worry- before jumping out in front of you, wrapping his arms around your torso and making you all but scream.
âHoly shit!â You were giggling, wrapping your arms around Artâs neck for stability. âIsnât it fun in here? Youâve been missing out.â
He didnât respond for a moment, so you met his eyes. You hadnât realized how close you were. It seemed like the realization was hitting him, too, as his eyes scanned your face. He glanced from your eyes to your lips and back. Despite the breeze and the water, your skin was suddenly very warm. You could feel every point where his body touched yours.
You knew what was happening- you could sense it. At least, you were pretty sure you knew. Itâs the only thing that could come next, right?
⌠Maybe you were reading it wrong.
You hesitated. Then, suddenly, âGod, itâs cold,â and you kicked off of him to dunk yourself in the water one more time, resurfacing a couple steps away and wading onto shore. When you looked back at him, you could almost convince yourself that the same disappointment that filled your chest was written on his face. âCome on!â You called cheerfully, and Art started after you, replacing the look with an amused smile.
You both put your clothes back on, if only to shield yourselves from some of the breeze on the short walk back. You were both silent as you neared the house, as you walked down the halls. Neither of you even remarked on how Tashi and Patrick had finally gone silent. When Art got to his door and stopped, though, you turned to him.
âGoodnight,â you said, willing your voice to sound less defeated than you felt. Your hands fiddled with the hem of your soaked shirt.
Art nodded. That look was back in his eyes, the one that looked just how you felt. âGoodnight.â
ââ
ââ
â
The shower was much needed and very welcomed. You took your time getting sand off of you as best as you could, working the water into your hair (youâd wash it tomorrow- you werenât going through that whole workout this late). When you stepped out of the hot water, toweling yourself off, your eyes caught on the red Stanford baseball cap on the sink counter. You bit your lip and walked past it, into the connecting bedroom you were calling yours for the weekend.
Pajamas on, you sat at the edge of your bed, scrunching your hair mostly dry with a spare t-shirt youâd packed just for that. The crash of the ocean enveloped you through the open window.
You thought about it. About his arms around you and his chest against yours. About the way heâd looked at you and youâd known exactly what he was going to do. About his face when youâd second guessed yourself and ran away.
Fuck. Why did you run away?
When you got up and walked to the door, you grabbed the hat from the bathroom counter. You told yourself you were only going to return it, but something in the back of your mind laughed at your excuse.
You had just gotten to the door, lifting a hesitant hand to knock, when it swung open and you were met with a flushed, freshly showered, boxers-and-t-shirt clad Art Donaldson.
The two of you stared for a moment. You didnât see the disappointment in his eyes anymore, but there was still something there. You were sure it was on your face, too.
You cleared your throat. âHat,â you said, intelligently.
Art glanced at the hat in your slightly raised hand, then nodded. His eyes came back up to meet yours, then darted down to your lips. He opened his mouth and hesitated. âDo you wanna-â
You pushed forward, pressing your lips to his for just a moment, before pulling back, searching his eyes. He didnât give you too long to think about what youâd just done, his hands flying to your waist, pulling you back toward him and kissing you again. Hard.
Art yanked you into the room, and you dropped the hat, the door shutting as he pushed you up against it. His hands found their way under your sleep shirt, settling on your bare waist, and one of yours cupped his cheek while the other thread through his hair. You tugged gently at the curls, and he sighed your name into your mouth.
You pulled back just long enough to murmur, âBed?â
He obliged, grabbing your hand to lead you to the corner bed. His rental room was similar to yours, save for a warm, dull bedside lamp on, barely illuminating the room.
You both crawled onto the bed on your knees, leaning forward to pick up where youâd left. Artâs hands played with the hem of your shirt and you helped him lift it off of you. His shirt went next. He cupped your breasts tentatively, thumbs brushing over your nipples, his face watching yours like he wanted to see if he was doing this right. You pulled him back in for another kiss and bit his lip. He groaned.
âLay back,â he murmured against your mouth.
You did as told, scooting up the bed and falling into his pillows. They smelled mostly of the air freshener the owner of the beach house had doused it with, but the vague hint of Artâs cologne permeated the room.
He kissed you again, holding himself up over you. He placed kisses down your neck, your shoulders, your collarbone. As one of his hands came to rest between your legs, pressing against you between your pants and underwear, he placed his mouth on one of your nipples. He bit at it gently, sucking immediately to make up for the hurt and moving his hand against you. Your breath stuttered and grew heavy, lips parting, as he moved to your other nipple.
Art pressed a kiss to your stomach next, trailing lower, eyes closed. You watched as he murmured against your skin, âYou donât know how fucking long Iâve wanted this.â
âYeah?â Sex with me or eating me out specifically?â you wanted to ask. Instead, you bit your lip and watched him hook his fingers into the waistband of your pants and underwear, pulling them down together and tossing them on the floor. He pressed alternating kisses to each of your thighs, inching closer and closer. You could barely hear your voice when you asked, âWhy didnât you do anything?â
A shiver ran through you, partially from the vulnerability and cool air, partially from the way Art was looking at you- reverent. Devout. âI couldnât imagine Iâd be lucky enough.â
You wanted to say something back- something clever and sweet to let him know just how easily he could have had you- but his mouth was on you in less than a second, and all that you could do was let out an odd cross between a huff and a whine.
His tongue pressed flat against you- eager, almost desperate, like you were an oasis in the desert. His nose bumped your clit as he bobbed his head, switching between long strokes and focusing on sucking your clit. âShit,â you whispered, your hand threading through his hair. He fell into a rhythm, the consistent vulgar noises of his mouth against you filling the room alongside your gasps and whines.
When his tongue pushed into you, your eyes screwed shut. âFuck, Art,â you said, barely gripping his hair and faintly hoping that it wasnât painful for him. He only whined at his name, a desperate noise, and pushed his face impossibly deeper. âIâll- Iâll come if you keep-â You cut yourself off with a groan.
Art pulled back just enough to say, âI want you to. Please, let me taste it.â Immediately, his mouth was back on you, like he couldnât keep himself away for long. You wouldâve playfully chided him for being so filthy had you not been busy gripping his hair and letting curses fly.
You let your head fall back, hips rolling on their own accord, and he only adapted and let you ride his face and bring yourself to the edge. You came with a loud cry, thighs pressing in on his head, back lifting just slightly off the bed. Art didnât back off as your high subsided, continuing until youâd come down and were laying there, panting.
You pushed yourself up to a sitting position, then pulled Art back up onto the bed. His eyes were glossy, much like the majority of his face, covered in you and his own spit. You put your hands on his cheeks, ignoring the sticky feeling and pulling him in for a rough kiss. You could taste yourself on his tongue.
One of your hands wandered, trailing down his chest and coming to rest at the front of his boxers, palming him. He groaned.
âI wanna fuck you,â you said, pulling away to look him in the eye.
Art huffed a laugh. âYou canât say that to me. Iâm not gonna last at all.â
That caught you off guard, and you laughed. âWhat?â
He shrugged coyly, almost smug as if his cheeks werenât still flushed and glistening from his time spent between your legs. âIâm, like, halfway there already.â
Just from eating you out and a little petting? That was⌠surprisingly hot.
You told him as much, relishing in how deeply he flushed and how widely he grinned. You made him lie back on the bed. âCondoms?â You asked.
He nodded toward his bedside, to the backpack leaning against the nightstand. You raised an eyebrow at him before leaning off the bed to grab one. All he offered you was a shy smile.
You kissed his chest, making your way down to his waistband, and he watched, propped up on his elbows, like he was sure if he took his eyes off you youâd disappear. When you pulled down his boxers and tossed them aside, you wasted no time ripping the condom wrapper open and rolling it on.
Getting up on your knees, you hovered over him and lined your hips up with his. You gave him a quick glance. âThis okay?â
He nodded, eagerly, and you couldâve broken at the sight. You sank onto him, gasping slightly at the sensation. Art watched your face, open mouthed, eyes never leaving yours. You almost wanted to look away, but the intensity was riveting.
With him now fully in you, you gave yourself a moment to adjust, hands settling on his chest as he gripped your thighs. You gave your hips an experimental push forward.
Art let out a groan that sounded somewhat like âFuckâ and âUghâ put together. You repeated the motion, your mouth opening softly as you watched his eyes flutter open and shut. It was like he was struggling between giving into the feeling and watching you.
You increased your pace, head falling forward as you lifted your hips with each push. Artâs hands moved to grip your ass, eyes focused on you, little pants and whimpers escaping him as you moved. âFuck, youâre gorgeous,â he murmured. You wouldâve responded in kind, but he bucked his hips moments after and your head fell back with a moan.
With your hands now supporting you from behind, gripping the sheets, you rolled your hips with each lift. Art let out a particularly pathetic whine, and you grinned through your heavy breathing, gazing at him with heavily lidded eyes. âClose?â He nodded, his expression so desperate that you were sure he was right on the edge. You could feel yourself right behind him. âCum for me then,â you panted.
Art groaned, one hand moving to press sloppy circles against your clit. You forced yourself to keep your eyes open, wanting to see his face as his orgasm hit him. His eyebrows were furrowed, lips parted as he panted and he whimpered. When his orgasm came, his eyes shut and he cried out, gripping you tightly and continuing to rub your clit, hips bucking into you involuntarily. You were only a second behind, âFuck, Art!â the only thing you could say before your hips stuttered and your second orgasm washed over you.
Slowly, you came to a stop, panting and barely keeping yourself up. Your head was light, and you couldnât wipe an exhausted smile off your face. When you finally felt like your arms wouldnât give out, you lifted yourself off of him, collapsing on the bed between him and the wall, catching your breath.
Art removed the condom, tying it off and throwing it in the trash before turning to face you. His breathing was much more regular, but his chest still heaved. â...Fuck,â he said.
And you laughed, one arm over your eyes, the other clutching your stomach. âYeah?â
He was grinning at you when your arm moved off your eyes, then leaning in, pressing a kiss to your shoulder, your collar bone, your cheek. âYeah,â he murmured. Silence fell over you both as you watched him intertwine your fingers and stare at them. His lip twitched, like he was working up the courage to say something. âI meant it, you know. I wanted this- you- Iâve liked you for⌠a while.â
You hummed, now suddenly also very interested in your intertwined fingers. ââLiked,â past tense? All done now?â
He rolled his eyes. âNo, dumb-ass.â You smacked his arm, glancing up to find him looking at you now. âLike. Still. And probably will for a while.â
You felt your face warm. You kissed him. âI like you, too. Still do. Will for a while, etcetera.â
âThank fucking god,â he said, and you couldnât help but snort a laugh. When Art kissed you again, you could feel his smile against your lips, and you were sure he could feel yours.

oh my god they're engaged to be engaged...
(also this is entirely separate from the izzyguana series fyi, but my god I have drawn their little island so many times by now)
(ID in alt and under cut)
ID: 1a. Wide shot of Stede and Ed's ramshackle house on a hill of long grass, a forested mountain sliding into the sea behind them as the sun peeks above the waves, painting them orange and yellow. Some work has been put into the house since they found it: the holes in the roof have been boarded over or covered with tarp, a rickety porch railing and staircase off the left side have been built on from scraps, oil lamps have been hung on each corner, and an addition on the right side is in progress, rocks stacked on the wood-slat roof and tarps hanging from unfinished walls. Planks of wood, tools, and fishing poles are leaned up against the porch, the path to the house has been cleared out and defined by stones and shells, and a wooden sign out front has the words "Best Little Inn By The Sea! +fishing equipment" carved into it. Stede and Ed, wearing a teal blouse with brown leather trousers and purple tee with black leather trousers respectively, are standing on the porch and looking out over the land, arms around each others waist. Stede raises his arm in a wave and shouts, "Great to see you two! Come again any time!" In the foreground, Pete and Lucius are walking down the path away from the house, looking tired. Pete has one arm around Lucius's shoulders and his eyes are closed, head listing to the side. Lucius covers his mouth as he yawns, lifting the other to throw a halfhearted wave over his shoulder. 1b. Waist-up in profile of Stede and Ed on the porch, sunrise behind them. Closest to the viewer, Stede stares out after their guests, hand lowering, smile fading to something a little bittersweet. Ed leans into Stede, free hand in his pants pocket, and rests his head in the crook of his neck as he follows Stede's gaze with a thoughtful smile. Ed asks, "You ever think about that for us?" 1c. Repeat. Stede's hand drops further, wrist dangling, as he turns his face toward Ed with a bewildered smile. "What?" Ed straightens from his cuddle, embarrassed, but keeps his right hand on Stede's waist. His left gestures randomly as he scrunches up his face, avoiding Stede's gaze. He explains, "Y'know...the matie-monie thing, whatever."
2a. Zoom out slightly; Stede takes a step back toward the house to face Ed as he pivots with his back toward the yard. They are still connected waist-to-hand. Stede plants his free hand on his hip with a smug little smirk and says, "Well I certainly hope that's not your proposal." Ed waves his free hand in a 'stop' motion, flustered as he meets his partner's eyes, and splutters "Wha- no! No, mate, I just... 'M having a dialogue." 2b. Repeat, zoom in. Ed dips his chin to look up at Stede through his lashes, red-faced and accepting defeat as he mumbles, "...How would you want it to go, though? Hypothetically." Stede giggles helplessly, free hand leaving his hip to rest fingertips on Ed's chest. 2c. Repeat, the background cutting out in favor of the sunrise occurring between them. They are almost forehead-to forehead, both of Stede's hands now pressed to Ed's chest and idly playing with the tips of his hair. Ed stares at his face with hooded eyes. Stede smiles, gaze lowered to focus on his hands, and says "Oh, I don't know. A bit of romance, you know. Dazzle." 2d. Repeat, zoom in to bust, background now mottled oranges and yellows. Ed raises his head to look past Stede with a frown, brow furrowed in confusion as he repeats blankly, "Dazzle." Stede hums idly to himself, concentrating on petting Ed's chest. 2e. Repeat. Stede lifts his head with a little smile, putting them nose-to-nose and adds, "I wouldn't say no to some fireworks." Ed flusters at the pointed reminder of their first time, cheeks turning red and a wobbly smile creeping across his face.
3a. Repeat. Stede asks, "What about you?" Ed leans back from their embrace, smile turning incredulous as he repeats, "Me?!" 3b. Waist up of Ed as he turns, sunrise at his back, to lean his left arm against the porch railing. He glances over the yard with a resigned little frown, fiddling with a piece of his hair with his right hand. He replies, "I dunno. Never really thought about it." 3c. Chest up of Stede as he mirrors Ed's pose with a fond if slightly amused smile, stairs and forest behind him. Offscreen, Ed continues, "Bet you had a whole scrapbook of ideas, eh?" 3d. Repeat. Stede straightens with a "Well!" and turns his body to face the house. 3e. Knees-up from the house POV as both men lean against the porch railing, the yard, ocean, and brightening sky beginning to streak itself with orange beyond. Stede is facing the viewer, back to the yard, leaning with his elbows braced on the railing. He aims his gaze to the side with a bit of a pained smile and says, "When Mary and I were engaged, a scrapbook wouldn't have been much use." Ed is turned toward Stede, left elbow propped on the railing. He scowls and sticks out his tongue at mention of Mary. 3f. Repeat. Stede turns his head toward Ed, who quickly tucks his petty tongue back in his mouth and schools his expression into one of interest. Stede continues, "Everything had been decided for us already. Never really got to the proposal part."
4a. Repeat. Ed turns his body more fully toward Stede, folding his arms on the railing and leaning his head over them with a warm smile. Stede raises his eyebrows in surprise and goes slightly pink as Ed says, "I'll have to make it really good, then." 4b. Stede turns his body toward Ed, left arm sliding against the railing behind him and right hand cupping Ed's chin as he leans closer, nose to nose. Ed's eyes hood, looking at Stede's mouth as is curls into a loving smile. Stede responds, "Can't wait." 4c. Repeat. Ed suddenly goes pale and blurts out, "You'll say yes, though, right?" Stede freezes in surprise, lips puckered in preparation of a kiss. 4d. Repeat. Stede throws his head back in a loud bark of laughter, straightening up and turning fully toward Ed to cup his cheek in his right hand and his shoulder with the other. Ed aims an embarrassed, besotted smile at him as Stede replies, "Ed, of course! Who could say no to you?"
5a. Repeat, both now in profile. The orange and yellow light of the sunrise is slowly spreading across the sky from the left. Ed straightens up from his lean to bring their foreheads together, still a bit red-cheeked and with a nervous edge to his smile as he lowers his gaze. He says, "You can say no if you want, though." Stede smiles at him with every ounce of tenderness he has, hands firm on his cheek and shoulder. He replies, "There's nothing I want more than to say yes to you, Ed. Permanent ink, remember?" 5b. Repeat. Stede moves his right hand from Ed's cheek to hook around his back, tugging him closer as he leans himself back. Ed stumbles forward with a helpless grin, cheeks even redder, bracing himself with his right hand on Stede's chest. When their eyes meet, Stede's smile turns teasing and faux-sinister, continuing, "You're stuck with me regardless. Foreverrr~" 5c. Repeat, larger and brighter, as Stede and Ed finally come together in an affirming kiss, the land behind them retreating to allow the sea and sky to fill the background. The sun finally breaches the horizon, sending glitter sparkling across the waves and gilding the pair in warm golden light. Ed's right hand is cupping the side of Stede's neck, thumb tracing through his sideburns, and Stede's right is hooked fully around his shoulders, cushioned in his soft hair. They are both smiling into the kiss, unhurried and in harmony.
6a. Repeat as they pull back from the kiss just far enough to meet each other's gaze, arms still around each other, Ed's right hand brushing Stede's cheek and Stede's buried in the back of Ed's hair. Ed smirks flirtatiously, eyes hooded, and says, "You know... I hear there's a traditional engagement sex sabbatical, too." Stede matches his expression, left hand sliding down Ed's shoulder to press against his lower back. Stede replies playfully, "Oh, is there? I suppose I can plan that part, then." 6b. Repeat. Ed brings his left hand up to mirror his right, cupping both of Stede's cheeks, and arches up on his toes to lean over Stede with a teasing grin. His movement forces Stede to arch his back in the first motions of a dip, hands briefly flying free of their grip on his future fiance to try to catch his balance. Their lips a centimeter apart, Ed hums, "Mmm, gimme a rehearsal, first." Stede tosses his head back with a giggle in response, eyes closed, cheeks pink. Hearts float above their heads. 6c. Shot at the bottom of the hill Stede and Ed are stationed on, the packed-dirt path to the house curving upward in the background, the stones and shells now more conservatively scattered. Amidst the tall grass and tropical plants lining the way are handmade wooden signs shaped like arrows pointing the way to the inn. Words carved into them say "this way!" and "best inn!" Pete and Lucius are in the foreground, walking down the hill towards the viewer, Pete's right arm still looped around his husband's shoulders. They still look very tired with dark circles beneath their eyes - Pete still hasn't opened his. Lucius has, barely, and is scowling his way forward with a furrowed brow, declaring, "We are leaving them the worst review." Pete nods solemnly. Text nearby points to them and says 'kept up all night by noises'. Pink hearts and exclamation points spill out behind them from the bend in the path, echoing the lovey-dovey noises from above that must have made their stay so insufferable. /end ID

Next Door Neighbors
Summary: You just wanted peace and quiet and Harry just wanted to jam out in his garage for his birthday. So you decide to confront your new neighbor but things don't go as you planned.
A/N: Here it is! Sorry I didn't get it out earlier but it's here now! Enjoy this little đ Harry Styles Happy Birthday Treat đxoxo
Word Count: 7.8k
Warning: 18+ only, smut
It was the perfect house with the perfect backyard in the perfect neighborhood. Youâd hit the jackpot. Your first big girl purchase. A house with a lovely garden, two bedrooms, a lovely little kitchen with the perfect rays of light that shone in through the big windows all morning. And the neighborhood was nice and quiet where you could enjoy your weekends in peace reading to your heartâs content.
It was a huge upgrade from the apartment life you endured for years while you saved up for just this thing. And youâd finally found it. Things seemed to be coming together for you in life finally.
On Friday after you got off work, Zoya called, asking if you wanted to go out with the girls but you politely declined, âIâm just gonna stay in I think. I hope you donât mind. Maybe next weekend, Zo.â
You had a bottle of wine tucked under your arm as you held your cell phone to your ear on your way to the checkout lane at the little neighborhood market a few blocks from your house. Your new house. The one with your name on the mortgage.
Your plan was to drink a little wine in your cute new backyard and read a book, just taking in the peace of your new place.
You turned on the twinkle lights over your back porch (your dad had helped you put them up into the trees) and sat down in your outdoor lounge chair with a glass of wine and the book youâd been looking forward to reading. The sun had just gone down and you could hear crickets. A perfect Friday night, in your opinion.
That is until you were twenty pages into your book and suddenly the loud racket of what sounded like obnoxiously loud live music playing from next door had you closing your book and standing up to investigate.
The closer you got the more you could hear the unmistakable sound of a live band playing, the pop of a snare drum, the trill of a guitar... You looked over the wood fence into the driveway of your neighborâs home and couldnât see much but you saw lights on inside of the garage and the loud ruckus of a homemade instrumental band.
You didnât want to be one of those neighbors. One of those awful people who complained about everything their neighbors did. But this was ridiculous. It seemed they had no regard for any of the people that lived around them.
Walking back to what was supposed to be your little oasis you sat down and grumped to yourself about how rude some people could be. Youâd give them one hour until you went over there and told them in person to lower the noise.
Youâd only been living in your little house for a few days and this was your first Friday night. You had really been looking forward to a peaceful night at home. Not even your second glass of wine could calm you down.
You didnât know why you were so mad about it. In your apartment, you were bombarded with noise from all the neighbors who shared a wall with you and the loud heard of elephants that lived above you.
But this? It was meant to be your sanctuary. Your place of solitude.
But youâd had it. When an hour had passed and you paced around your backyard getting up the nerve to walk over there you huffed and psyched yourself up as you made your way into the front yard of your neighborâs house and could see three men inside the wide open garage. A drummer pounding away, and two men standing â one with a guitar and another with a bass.
You stepped into the driveway and clutched your cardigan closer to your chest as you appeared at the threshold of the garage and the music abruptly stopped when the tall one with dark curls laid his eyes on you.
âHi. Youâre the new neighbor,â he raised his hand from the neck of the guitar he had slung over his shoulder and smiled.
You instantly no longer were raging with anger when you heard his voice and realized this was the man youâd seen briefly the morning before as he got into his car. You imagined he was attractive but not this attractive. Tattoos along one arm, thick curls, plush pink lips, dimplesâŚ
âUh⌠yeah. I just moved in next door a few days ago.â You looked behind yourself and back toward the men before continuing, âI was hoping you guys couldââ
Your voice was cut off by the clash of a symbol then the hit of a snare before the drummer tapped his sticks together, âWeâre in the middle of something here in case you didnât see.â
âHey⌠chill. Donât be rude man,â the curly-headed man with the guitar shot a look at the drummer before looking back at you, âWhat were you saying? Sorry.â
You shifted on your feet, âI was wondering if you guys could keep it down. Itâs so loud and itâs all I can hear while Iâm trying to read.â
The guy with the bass guitar spoke, âOh come on, lady. We hardly ever get to do this.â
Your neighbor began removing his guitar, lifting the strap over his head as he looked at the other two, âLetâs call it a night guys. Thatâs enough.â
The other two began to grumble as they packed away their things and your neighbor stepped out of the garage in front of you with his hand held out to you, âIâm Harry.â
You smiled and placed your palm against his, âY/n.â
The drummer came up beside Harry, âTodayâs his birthday you know. The only thing he wanted today was to jam out for a bit.â
Your eyes widened as you looked at Harry, âOh. I didnât know. Iâm sorry⌠youââ
âDonât worry about it. We had a good hour. Iâm beat anyway. Long week at work.â
The bassist gave Harry a side hug, âIâm gonna head home. See you later, okay? Happy birthday, dude.â
âOh. I should leave. Iâm really sorry again,â you waved as you began to back away.
But Harry stepped in toward you, âStick around for a minute okay?â
The drummer followed suit, bidding Harry a happy birthday and then getting into his car to drive away as you stood awkwardly at the edge of the garage until it was just you and Harry.
âIâm sorry. I feel really bad that they left. And itâs your birthday too? Iâll⌠do you want a bottle of wine or something? Let me grab you a bottle as a gift and an apologyâŚâ
Harry grinned at you and shook his head, âMind if I come with you? Iâd love to see the inside of the house. Never got the chance to see it before. That can be your birthday gift to me.â
You noted the smirk on his face, his confident posture, and then you realized he had crystalline green eyes. Something in the way he was looking at you gave you those ridiculous butterflies in your tummy.
âYeah. Of course, Harry.â You turned and he followed behind you as you led him into your backyard, closing the gate behind yourself.
âThis is the backyard. Iâm gonna put in some flowers over there,â you pointed, âAnd maybe do something with the porch at some point.â
Harry looked around the backyard briefly before he put his gaze back on you as you opened up your door to let him inside. You were sure you were insane to be letting your neighbor, whom you did not know, into our house with you alone at night, but you only live once, isnât that what they say?
âKitchen,â you gestured your hand and then moved through into the living room where Harry trailed behind you and looked around.
âItâs nice. I like how big the windows are. Always was jealous of how big they are compared to mine.â
You looked up at him and smiled, âItâs one of the reasons I bought the place. The window in the kitchen overlooking the backyard kind of sealed the deal for me. Lots of great light comes in for most of the day.â
âI bet it does,â he kept his eyes on you and your tummy was still fluttering about.
âOver here is the bedroom,â you flipped on the switch, âItâs got its own full bathroom. Tiny but I like it.â You turned to move down the hall and flipped on the switch to the hallway bathroom, âAnother bathroom, here,â and then moved to the final door, pushing it open to an empty room, âAnd at some point, Iâll furnish this. Itâll be like an office, guest room sort of thing.â
You turned off the light and looked back at Harry who was standing right behind you.
âThank you, for showing me around.â
You felt your face warm up as you looked at him. You liked how he said your name. Liked how his lips moved around his words when he spoke.
âOf course. Um⌠do you want any wine? I was a glass and a half into a bottle if you want to finish it with me?â
That was an easy yes from Harry. You brought your glass in from outside and pulled out a clean one for your neighbor before pouring a bit of the burgundy liquid inside for him.
âHappy birthday, Harry,â you held your glass out to him and he tapped the edge of his glass to yours, âSorry that I ruined it, though. I kind of feel awful.â
Harry shook his head, âDonât be sorry. Like I said, it was a long week at work and we had a good hour anyway. Plus this is nice. Getting to know my neighbor,â he took a sip of his wine.
âHow old are you today?â You took a sip of your wine as you watched him.
â30,â he sighed, âGrown adult officially.â He smiled.
You laughed at his remark and nodded, âYes, 30 marks the official entry into adulthood. Thatâs my belief as well.â
You really liked Harry. He was easy to talk to and you decided he made you feel very comfortable.
âSo, youâre a musician?â You raised your brows.
He shook his head and chuckled, âWell, I like to sing and play instruments. Iâm not really great or anything. Just a hobby. Used to be in a band in college but then I realized I had to get a real job and figure out how to pay my bills and get along in life.â
You leaned your bottom into your kitchen counter and smiled at him, âOh yeah. I know all about that. Would be nice if we could make good money just doing our hobbies so we didnât have to get real jobs,â you laughed, âWhat do you do for work?â
âIâm an electrical contractor. Have a small business with three employees. Itâs hard work but it pays well. Most of the time.â
You smiled. He continued to get more attractive the more he talked and the more you learned. It didnât hurt that you could tell he was in incredibly great shape as well. He was tall, his shoulders were broad and his shirt stretched tightly over the lats at his back and hung loosely where his waist was, indicating a nice healthy build and upper body strength. His arms were lean muscle and even his thighs filled out the tops of his jeans so you understood it wasnât just his upper body that was well-muscled.
You heard Harry chuckle as you darted your eyes back up to his. Youâd been caught checking him out. You hadnât meant to let your eyes scrape down his frame but⌠well. Here you were.
âAnd what do you do, Y/n?â
Harry kept his sight on you as he sipped from his glass. His sultry gaze was doing things to your hormones and making your heart pump a little harder behind your ribcage.
âIâm the general manager at SpendCo,â you laughed and shrugged, âNot a fancy job but I like it. Good benefits. Was able to save up for this place,â you gestured your hand around the kitchen.
âMy jobâs not fancy either,â Harry laughed, âBut yeah. Itâs steady work. A good paycheck.â
You nodded. You could relate in some ways. Youâd gone to school for business but wound up working your way up from the bottom at SpendCo. When you started you were making just over minimum wage as a cashier, but now you worked in the office, Monday through Friday (no more weekends for you) and had shift managers and employees working under you. It felt good to be the boss.
âWanna sit in the living room? Couch is brand new. In fact, Iâve hardly even had the chance to sit in it myself.â
âYeah. Letâs break that couch in, Y/n,â Harry grinned as he nudged you with his shoulder.
Oh?
You laughed at his comment but decided to not take it the way you imagined he meant. Of course, he obviously meant just sitting on it and breaking it in that way. Certainly, there were no innuendos behind his words.
You didnât have a proper coffee table yet so you pulled an empty bin with a lid to the front of the couch, âWeâll use this to put our glasses on. Still not done decorating or buying things I need, as you can tell.â
Harry sat his glass down on the plastic lid of the bin and pointed at your stereo setup next to the TV, âCan I put on some music?â
âYeah, sure,â you smiled as you took another sip of your wine and watched your handsome neighbor get up and turn on your stereo and speakers. He pulled his phone from his back pocket and searched for the Bluetooth to connect and a song began to play over your speakers.
âLike Chris Isaak?â Harry asked as he sat down on the couch, right next to you, his knee knocking into yours.
âYeah⌠I think. Iâve heard this song before anyway,â you smiled as you looked down at your thighs.
Harry leaned his back into the cushion and you felt him shifting next to you, his arm propped up on the back of the seat behind you.
âSo where did you live before you moved in here?â
You turned your head to look at him before placing your eyes safely on the plastic bin, âIn an apartment over in Rogerâs Park. Nice little neighborhood. But I hated living in an apartment. Lugging groceries up three flights of stairs every time I went shopping. I mean I got used to it but stillâŚâ you laughed.
âOh yeah. I know what you mean. I used to live in an apartment too. Actually also in Rogerâs Park⌠but that was like five years ago.â
You peeked at him with your brows raised, âYeah? You lived in Rogerâs Park too? What area?â
âOff Grand near the big bus terminal.â
âWait. For real? At Sheraton Oaks?â
Harry furrowed his brows and squinted, âYes. Shit. Is that where you lived?â
âIt is. 3rd floor. Apartment 10.â
Harry turned his body toward you, his thigh flush against yours, âNo fucking way, Y/n. I lived in apartment 10,â he pointed his thumb at himself with a wide surprised grin on his face.
You shook your head and looked at him in disbelief, âThatâs wild. How funny that two people who used to live in the same apartment at different times became next-door neighbors. What are the chances?â
Harry laughed, âSeems quite unlikely in such a big city.â
You and Harry sat facing one another in amazement as a new song came on.
âYou okay?â Harryâs pupils ran over your features and you saw him looking at your lips as he poked his tongue out to wet his own.
âYeah. Why?â
Harry softly smiled as he lifted his hand to your face and you felt the pad of his thumb press into your cheek, âYouâre biting the inside of your cheeks. Just wanted to make sure you werenât nervous or something.â
You puffed out a laugh and shook your head, âNo. Iâm not nervous. Sometimes I chew on the inside of my cheeks. Bad habit.â
Harry nodded shallowly with his eyes on you but he didnât respond. Instead, he reached for his glass and took a sip of wine.
âSo⌠umâŚâ you glanced at him and shot your eyes to his hand that held the stem of the glass. His hands were nice and big and you noticed he had his nails painted, alternating blue and yellow.
âSo, um⌠What? What were you gonna say?â
You gulped and forced yourself to look into his eyes. He was so handsome and you were beginning to get hot all over. He was too close (not that that was a bad thing), his thigh was solid against yours, and his eyes were drawing something out of you. He was alluring.
âI donâtâŚâ you shook your head, âForgot what I was gonna say.â
Harry pulled his lips into his mouth, a muted grin on his face as you watched dimples carve into his cheeks. Like he knew what you were thinking.
âI like this sweater,â he gestured toward your cardigan and you looked down at it. It was knitted with a cat playing with a ball of yarn on the left side.
âMy aunt bought it for me for Christmas last year,â you smiled and as you brought your eyes up you noticed he was wearing a necklace but you couldnât see the whole thing as it was tucked under his t-shirt.
He pulled at a button on your cardigan and cocked his head as he looked at you, âAre you sure youâre okay, Y/n? Do you want me to leave?â
Your eyes widened, âOh no. This is nice. I⌠Iâm okay. Honestly.â
âOkay. You just seem a little frazzled. Want to make sure Iâm not doing anything thatâs making you uncomfortable.â
You shook your head, âNo. Youâre great. You havenât done anything to make me uncomfortable.â You bit your bottom lip into your mouth and tried to give off an air of calm and confidence like Harry was but he was something else. He was so incredibly attractive and the eye contact was making you slowly melt. You couldnât help but let your mind wander to what it would be like to kiss him.
He grinned, one side of his mouth pulling upward, âI see.â
You watched as he took a deep breath and placed his wine glass back down before looking back into your eyes, âSo, um⌠can I ask you a personal question?â
You nodded, âYeah. Sure.â
âDo you have a boyfriend orâŚ?â
Your brows raised upward, âOh. Uh, no. No boyfriend,â you put your hands into your lap and fiddled with your fingers, âAnd, uh⌠you? Significant other?â
A breathy laugh fell from his chest as he shook his head, âNope.â He popped the p as he responded.
You nodded and looked down at the hand that heâd placed over his thigh. His pinky was pressed into your leg. You were sure he was giving you some kind of signal. All the signs were there. His body language, eye contact, asking you about a boyfriend, and the nearness of him⌠He was so close you could smell the soap he used.
âMmmâŚâ you racked your brain to think of anything to say, âHow long have you lived here?â
He licked his lips again, âFive years. Moved out of Sheraton Oaks and then bought the house next door.â
You smiled, âSo that means I moved in right after you moved out.â
Harry slowly moved his hand further toward your leg and you felt his pinky and ring finger press into your leggings before subtly bending his pinky finger out to rub the fabric under his digit, âSounds like we have a lot in common.â
âYeah. Guess so,â you gave him a weak smile and looked down at his hand.
âAm I overstepping?â
You shook your head and looked up at him.
âNo? What about if I kissed you? Is that too much?â
Your breath caught in your lungs as you kept your eyes pinned to his and shook your head again.
âNo, itâs not too much? Or no you donât want me to kiss you?â
You swallowed and your heart bounced around in your chest so wildly you could almost hear it, âNo, itâs not too much.â
The smile on Harryâs face was soft as he looked from your eyes to your mouth, âItâs okay then? You donât mind the birthday boy stealing a kiss from his cute neighbor?â
That pulled a laugh from you just as he hoped it would, âIâd like that I think.â
Harry slid his free hand up to the side of your neck, his thumb at the base of your jaw close to your ear, âLast chance to say no.â
You laughed again and placed your palm over the top of his hand that had fully moved over your thigh, âKiss me.â
The slow movement of his face toward yours, the nudge of his nose to your skin, hot puffs of breath spreading over your cheek, soft lips brushing against the edge of your mouth, before he finally pressed his smooth pink lips against yours was alchemic. Something about him, about the way he handled himself and spoke to you and devoured you with his eyes⌠But with his mouth against yours, his thumb softly rubbing at your jaw, and his hand moving to fit his fingers between yours as he kept it pressed over your thigh you felt electrified.
And he tasted like mint and smelled like soap and his lips were smooth and moist against yours. Your Friday night had already turned out far better than you imagined it would.
Yeah. Making out on your new couch in your new house with your new neighbor was way better.
You slid the palm of your free hand up his shoulder and to the nape of his neck as his own grip on the side of your neck and jaw tightened the slightest.
But your mind was on his mouth. The heat coming from his touch. The way his tongue slid through your lips to beckon them openâŚ
Harry pulled at your hand and urged you toward his lap. Parting your legs you sat down over the spread of his thighs, settling yourself as close to him as possible.
He slid his hands up your thighs and you felt ravenous. It was as if sitting in his lap made it so much more real. He was moving things along and you were keeping pace.
You pressed your tongue against his and softly rocked your hips down. As your pelvis tilted against Harry, he moaned into your mouth and it was the hottest thing youâd ever heard.
âFuck. You still good?â He parted from the kiss, keeping his nose bumped against yours.
You breathed out a yes as you nodded and when you lifted your face your lips brushed against his and it started all over again. Lips smothered over lips and tongues wetly dragging against tongues.
Harryâs hands inched up to your hips and you pressed your fingers into the back of his neck, feeling his pulse, steady and strong under your skin.
He lapped over your bottom lip before sucking it into his mouth and then dropped his cushiony lips down to your jaw, peppering damp kisses under the space of your chin and over your neck.
You loved having your neck kissed. Not just loved it⌠you craved it. The feel of a manâs breath and mouth and tongue and nose against your pulse point and the delicate skin that wrapped over blood pumping through your arteries had your skin tingling.
Another rock of your hips down and you felt the obvious swell of something growing under his jeans. He hissed and you backed away from his mouth, not knowing if his sharp inhale was from pain or if he liked the slide of the fabric over your crotch pressing against him.
When you looked at his eyes he was a different man. His pupils had widened and his plush pink lips were wet and parted, nostrils taking in air heavily as you felt his fingers dig into your hips.
âDid I hurt you?â You brought one of your hands toward his jaw feeling the light scruff along the bone under your knuckles.
He shook his head, âNo. Not at all. But I do need to reposition.â
You looked down between your bodies and moved back on his thighs to give him space but before your brain could connect to your motions you were reaching down for his button to unpluck from the thick jean fabric. He gently lifted his hips as you unzipped his pants and then you looked at him as you pushed the bottom hem of his shirt upward over the band of his underwear.
âYou wanna help?â He spoke breathily as you nodded and pulled the elastic away from his skin with one hand and used the other to reach under the fabric. It was sparse hair and skin and then and then denser hair and warmth until you felt him tucked awkwardly to the side against his pelvis.
The small coo that fell from your mouth was involuntary as you wrapped your hand around him. Hot and thick in your hand. He inhaled sharply again when he felt your palm on his cock as you helped guide him upright.
Your breath was unsteady and shallow as you kept your eyes on Harryâs, âGod, Harry.â
âWhat?â His teasing smirk gave away that he knew what. He knew his cock was big and watching your reaction to that was pleasing.
You gulped and peeked down at it, your hand still holding the fabric away from his hips. A swollen, smooth ruddy colored tip that matched the pink of his lips. The length of which pushed out from the top of the band and sat perfectly in between two fern tattoos at his hips along the bare part of his skin.
âItâsâŚâ you looked back up at him, âItâs nice.â
Harry breathed out a laugh, âNice? Why thank you.â He grinned.
But then you felt his fingers slide under your t-shirt, pushing the fabric up slowly until his skin was pressed into your sides. It felt like he was urging you to remove your shirt so you did. Pulling your cardigan off first you let it fall to the floor at Harryâs feet before you peeled your t-shirt off.
Harry was surprised to see you werenât wearing a bra. It had been easy enough to hide under the knitted sweater you figured, so you never put a bra on when you went to confront him earlier. And of course, you werenât wearing one. It was meant to be a quiet Friday night in. There had been no need.
He pushed his hands up your sides until his fingers were wrapped around your ribs with his thumbs pressing into the soft plump underside of your tits.
You watched him take you in. Your nipples were straining and goosebumps littered your flesh as he ghosted his thumbs along the sensitive tissue.
It felt like so much. You had never done anything remotely sexual with someone you didnât know. But Harry was hot and you were turned on. So much so that you could feel the dampness in your panties.
You reached back to his chest, pulling at his shirt. You wanted to see more. Wanted to know what he looked like underneath it all. You knew he was fit. And you were positive there were more tattoos hidden away under the material of his shirt.
With his eyes on yours, he moved his hands away from your breasts and pulled his shirt off, taking the back and bringing it over his head at the front. You got a glimpse of the necklace he wore. A white gold cross that slapped against his chest when it caught on the fabric of his shirt as he removed it.
You had been right. His body was defined and strong. Bulky muscular pecs and toned abs. Inked skin from his clavicle to the butterfly under his pectorals and down to the ferns, where his cock poked out of the top of his underwear.
Pressing your palms over his pecs you smoothed your hands down over his nipples and to the butterfly tattoo underneath.
Harry put his hands on your hips again while you admired his torso and you felt his fingers dip under the waistband of your dark-colored tights. Another signal. A question seeking approval for more.
Drawing your eyes up to his you put your hands over his fingers and pushed the material down with him.
Of course, sitting in his lap hindered too much movement but he understood your hint as he pushed you up by your hips and you found yourself being moved off of his lap to your back on the couch.
âStill good, Y/n?â He looked at you with those dark pupils, an air of respectful authority. He made your skin boil.
You nodded, âIâm good.â
Harry began to pull at the stretchy fabric, bringing it down your hips and over your thighs til your knees were free and then he lifted your legs so he could get the leggings off your feet.
When your pants were on the floor, he still had your legs held upward, one hand at the back of your ankles and you peered down at him indulging in the sight of your skin at the back of your thighs and down to your bottom covered in your panties.
You saw a grin on his face as he brought your legs down before he stood up and pulled his jeans off his legs.
His body was so strong and masculine. He could easily dominate you, the thought briefly crossed your mind as you watched the muscles in his arms flex, his abs clench, and the sinew on his powerful-looking thighs bulge as he steadied himself one leg at a time until his jeans were off and he was only clad in his underwear with dark inky designs on his skin and even on his thigh.
He kneed himself down onto the couch, hovering over you as you naturally spread your legs to allow him space between your thighs.
And the feel of his hard shaft pressing over your mound before his lips dropped down to yours once again had you dazed. It almost didnât feel real.
âSo fucking hot, Y/nâŚâ he whispered against your lips, âMade me so hard.â
You gasped when he rocked himself down over you, fabric rubbing against fabric until your arousal had seeped through your panties and began wetting his underwear.
He moaned and parted from this kiss, âYouâre all wet.â He slid himself upward and then back with a grin. âYou like that?â
You nodded with a moan.
âYeah? What else do you want, Y/n? Hm? Want to get rid of these panties?â
You moved your shaky hands down your hips and pushed at the fabric to bring them down. All you wanted was him. Your hormones were screaming at you and all you could think about was his big cock and how it would feel sliding inside of you.
Harry laughed at how enthusiastic you seemed and moved back to help you remove your panties, âOkay. We can get these off. Mind if I lose my underwear too?â
You sat up and reached for the band of his briefs as he began to push them down until he was completely bare before you.
His cock hung heavy outward, pointing toward you, like it was beckoning to be touched so you did, reaching for him and taking your palm from his tip to his base until your hand hit the dark thatch of hair and then pulled back up to his smooth head.
âI want it. Want to feel it, Harry.â You looked at him as you pumped him again.
He groaned as he watched your small hand move along his length.
âDo you have a condom?â
You swallowed and paused your motions. You definitely did not have a condom. Which was quite unfortunate because that could only mean sex was not going to happen unless he had one and was willing to go to his house to get it.
Shaking your head no you frowned.
Harry licked his lips and trailed his eyes over your tits and down your tummy, âSâokay. Plenty of other ways to have fun.â
You whined as you looked down at your hand. You had really wanted to feel that big thing wrecking your insides.
Harry took your chin and tilted your face to look up at him, âWhatâs wrong?â
You inhaled and let go of his pretty dick, âI wanted to feel you so bad.â
He pressed his mouth against yours, soft reassuring kisses had your heart strumming in your chest.
âWell I would hate to disappoint you,â he grinned, âWant to go to mine? Iâve got condoms. Weâll just have to put some clothes back on.â
You nodded and pushed yourself up, quickly pulling your cardigan on and slipping your leggings back up your legs.
Harry liked how desperate you seemed. That was quite the ego boost. He put his shirt back on and pulled his jeans up but left the zipper down as he clutched the fabric to keep it up.
âGuess thatâs good enough for breaking your couch in, yeah?â
You laughed and nodded, âWas a good first use for it I think.â
Harry laughed as he took your hand and you two made your way out your front door to his, hurrying over grass under bare feet and small chuckles until you were in the safety and privacy of his living room. He kept your hand in his until he got to his bedroom where he pulled his shirt off and you followed suit, ridding yourself of the annoying clothing youâd had to put back on.
But you knew it was going to be worth it.
Harry dug into his bedside table for a condom and laid it on top of the wood before looking back at you, âYou still want this?â
You nodded and climbed onto his bed. The tunnel vision you had was keeping your mind from wandering too far off course as you watched Harry stroke his cock, long pulls up and down to his base as he crawled after you onto his bed.
You easily opened up your legs for him to fit his hips between and felt his warm cock slipping through your folds, rubbing against your clit.
âSo slippery, Y/n.â You knew you were as he drove himself over your labia, smoothing his cock against your arousal back and forth.
A shaky moan fell from your throat and Harry grinned as he smeared his lips against your mouth.
He worked himself up and down, wetting the outside of his cock and his tip as he inched through your pussylips smoothly.
You loved his mouth. Loved how he kissed you. It was raw and felt like he gave a damn. Felt like he was enjoying your mouth just as much as you enjoyed his.
Finally, he pushed himself back and reached for his condom looking at you, âDo want anything else first? Or do just want my cock?â
You looked down at his hard dick with your arousal spread all over him and it was all you wanted.
âI want your cock,â your words were breathy as you looked up into his eyes.
âYeah? A greedy little thing arenât you?â Harry began to pull the condom over his shaft, pinching the tip as he dragged the rubber down as far as it would reach before settling himself back against your hips, pushing your thighs back slightly, âSo desperate for it,â he nudged his cock down against your pussy and then slid it up to your clit teasingly, âCouldnât wait to have me inside you. Insisted on it even,â he grinned as he tormented you with his wide girth slipping back and forth against your cunt.
You tilted your hips up and groaned, trying to get him to push inside but he continued his taunting movements, âNow, now⌠so impatient. Iâll give you what you want soon enough sweetheart. But todayâs my birthday so I get to control the pace. Donât want you getting all bossy with me.â
You moaned and slid your hands over his shoulders as you rolled your hips upward again, kissing his slit with your entrance but this time he placed a hand over your thigh and held you in place, âIs it that bad, Y/n?â
You nodded, âPlease, Harry.â
âMmm⌠love a well-mannered lady. You gonna be good for me?â
You sighed and you would have rolled your eyes if you werenât so horny, so out of your mind desperate, âIâm gonna be good. Please.â
âYeah? Cause once I slide inside of you thereâs no turning back.â
You gripped his shoulders tight and groaned, âPlease.â
The feel of his warm, heavy cock smeared against your clit was almost too much. In fact, you could probably come from that alone if given enough time.
âSo sweet for me, Y/n,â Harry took the thigh heâd been holding down and brought your leg over his low back, smoothing his hand over your skin as he positioned himself at your entrance.
The moment you felt him pressing his bulbous head through your slick muscle you dropped your mouth open and moaned but then his mouth caught yours and the noises you were making became muffled as he moved his lips against your mouth.
You knew he was going to split you in half. The slow glide of his cock inside your warm walls was intense. Inch by inch he pushed in as his lips were wrapped around yours.
Holding onto his lats you lifted your hips against his as he slid back and then buried himself into the hilt. You gasped into his mouth at the ache of him nudging into your guts and then pulling back to his tip only to slide himself back in. Working you open slowly, he continued to drive into your cunt with gushy wet noises coming from your pussy as he stretched you open.
You appreciated him plunging in slowly and easing you into fitting around his cock properly. You liked the warmup but more than that, you needed him to destroy your pussy.
When he felt you bucking upward into him he parted his mouth from yours and sat back with his knees bent. You saw him watching the space where he was connected with your cunt as he continued rolling into you.
His abs were flexing as he steadied himself in and out. You gasped when he began to fuck into you a little faster, his cock sliding through your walls and bumping into all the slick bits on your insides.
A gurgled moan fell from your lips as he smacked his hips into yours. The patting of his balls against your ass came out in wet thuds. Your tits bounced with every long stroke into your tummy and he was panting as he let his eyes scan over your body and up to your pretty face.
âTaking me so well, Y/n. Making me leak into my condom already, pussyâs so good.â
You both moaned as he drove into you, his mattress under you giving way to the force of his thrusts.
âFeels so good, HarryâŚâ you panted.
âYeah?â He bucked inward and ground against you, swiveling his hips and you gasped at the deep press into your cervix.
His fingers were pinching into your thighs as he stuffed himself in and you gripped his forearms for leverage and lifted your neck to watch as his cock disappeared into your body over and over again.
His shaft was coated with your shiny arousal as he slid in and out, your pussy gripping around his skin perfectly.
Harryâs moans were growing louder as he continued fucking into you wetly, hips slamming against yours making his balls strike into your ass.
His thighs were flexing as he rocked against you while your body was shivering and feeling the bliss of getting an itch scratched that youâd been needing.
You felt his right hand release your thigh and then watched him press his thumb over your slippery clit.
You let out a pathetic cry of relief when he smoothed the pad of his digit in circles on your bud, âYes! Oh god!â
Harry coughed out a moan as he watched your face twist up, âThat feel good, Y/n?â
You focused your sight on his eyes and nodded, âYesâŚâ
The grin on his face could have been akin to something cocky but your brain was mush as you let him wreck you with deep strokes into your tummy, wet and sloppy, dripping arousal down your ass.
The springs in his mattress were bouncing in time with his thrusts and the wooden frame on his bed creaked when he jerked his hips forward into you.
âJust like that, huh? Pussy needed fucked, yeah?â Harryâs words were coming out tight and shaky. You could hear it in his voice how good it felt for him too.
He pressed down and moved his thumb deliciously over your puffy clit as his cock punched into your organs and tissue making you throw your head back and close your eyes arching your back upward.
Harry loved the sight; your sloppy wet pussy spreading apart for his cock as you arched your back like the sexy thing you were, soft tits swaying every time he buried himself in balls deep, lips parted, neck long and stretched out as you breathily moaned his name, âHh⌠HarryâŚâ
He could watch you like this all night. Stretches of skin covered in goosebumps as if you were cold, hard nipples at the center of your wobbly squeezable tits, soft tummy clenching, and wet pussy ruined and clenching around him.
The way he was smushing and circling his thumb over your clit had your head fuzzy and your heart racing. But then he leaned over you and pressed his other hand over your low tummy as he fucked into you, pushing against your insides and making the space he was invading with his cock feel tighter as he slid upward and nudged into your guts.
âGahhhâŚâ you let out a gasped moan when his hand pressed into your stomach.
âDoes that feel good, Y/n?â Harryâs eyes were on yours as he drove himself into you.
You nodded and scrunched your brows upward when your insides began to twist with your pussy stretching around him indulgently.
Your legs began to quiver from the strain of your muscles as you felt your orgasm nearing. Everything he was doing to you set your body alight. You reached for his strong biceps and dug your fingers in tight gasping at the depth of him.
âBe good for me, honey⌠there you go,â he spoke through clenched teeth, holding back his release, âRight there, huh? Feels good like that?â
You whimpered with a nod as you pinned your eyes to his. The expression on his face was lusty and filled with need as he dipped into you, pasting his hips against yours now, only fucking inward, pressing solidly against your insides.
You cried out when you felt the small burst and snap of your orgasm and he quickly moved his hands from your tummy and clit, leaning his hips against yours before pressing his palms into the mattress on either side of your shoulders and angling his body so he could pound into you and fuck you through your orgasm. The way his pelvis smushed against your clit, hips grinding against you as he pulled back and then forced his way through your opening to bury himself deep inside sent you over the edge.
You clung to his shoulders as you spasmed around his fat cock, slipping deep inside of you with a wet squelch as he reared back to his tip before rutting into the hilt.
Your vision and hearing grew muted as you came so you couldnât hear him clearly when he babbled off nonsense, âShit! Squeezing the fuck out of me, honey! Oh my god, that feels good. So fucking hot. Gonna make me come so hardâŚâ
Harryâs hips struck against you repeatedly until his balls constricted and tightened and then he was pumping into his condom, his muscles stiffening with his hips pressed into yours, mashing your body into the mattress underneath you.
He choked out a moan as his cock spurted his release, throbbing and twitching inside of you as you panted at how hard heâd come. The front of his thighs were pressed into the back of yours, holding you down with his hips as he drained every drop of his come into his condom.
Then it was silent. The sound of sex and moaning was quieted and the bed was no longer creaking and thumping.
Harry pressed his chest against your tits and you felt his plushy lips on yours again and you sighed against his mouth. Slowly your ears stopped ringing and you smoothed your hands up his strong back.
He pushed his face into your neck and his warm breath dampened your skin, âHappy fucking birthday to me,â he laughed.
You grinned with a tiny giggle and opened your eyes before running your fingers into his thick curls.
When heâd pushed himself up to look down at you, you couldnât get over how adorably handsome your neighbor was. He was sexy as hell and yet so cute at the same time.
âYou all right?â His raspy voice was quiet as he searched your face and brought a hand up to your temple, his thumb drawing over your skin.
The grin on your face should have told him as much as you nodded, âVery much all right.â You puffed out a laugh.
He laughed with you and smiled widely, dimples appearing in his cheeks, âWell, welcome to the neighborhood, Y/n.â
Raising a hand up to his jaw you nodded, a cheeky grin still stretched over your mouth, âAnd happy birthday to you, Harry.â
