How was it decided that a lesbian cannot be at all attracted to men either romantically or sexually? Was it for a historical reason that the definition excludes biromantic homosexuals?

Please don’t take this the wrong way. I believe you but want to know why that is.

Hi, no worries.

It’s not like at any point in history people gathered around and said “okay now lesbian doesn’t include men”.

Historically until a few decades ago the lesbian label was still used to describe any sapphic, not just lesbians. Then the bisexual manifesto happened, not only because of biphobic gays and lesbians, but also because bisexuals wanted people to recognize they weren’t half-gay and half-straight, they wanted their sexuality and identity to be recognized as a completely separate and unique identity.

It’s important to have different labels to describe different things. Lesbians are not attracted to men at all, and people who til this day want to include cis and trans men in lesbianism don’t want to recognize and accept a sexuality that completely excludes men. We are oppressed for not being attracted to men, that’s like the main reason why it’s important for us to have a label for ourselves that completely excludes men.

There’s other labels and other things that people who think they have a different sexuality than their romantic orientation can use that does not complete invalidate a label.
