TTTE Fans I am Begging You to Watch This
youtube
As ttte fans and locomotive enthusiasts, many of us are aware of the concerning state of railroad safety in the US, my home country. This episode of Last Week Tonight covers it in such a humorous, easy to understand, and concise way. They even do a little ttte parody skit at the end that was just so well made! I'd call it charming if the subject matter wasn't so bleak.
I seriously recommend this video if you need a quick and entertaining way to educate yourself on the state of railways in the US.

[1968]
Henry grimaced as he felt the steam pressure quickly vacating his system. He supposed he couldn’t make fun of Gordon’s incident with his safety valve anymore.
It wasn’t long before he heard a familiar growl approaching. The railway’s newest diesel engine, Bear, came rumbling up alongside with a supportive hoot.
“Heard from the stationmaster someone needed a rescue?” The Hymeck smiled.
Henry rolled his eyes, but found himself fighting down a smirk of his own. “Yeah, my safety valve gave out on me. What a place for it, huh?”
“Well, could be worse.” Bear replied, frankly. “You could’ve stopped in a tunnel, or-” He froze, as Henry grimaced. “I- I mean uh, you’d be letting off a lot of steam, and uh… and it probably wouldn’t have anywhere to go, um…”
Bear winced again, well aware he was doing very little to fix his slip-up.
“Genuinely, that wasn’t meant to be a jab at… y’know, the-”
“From you, it’s fine.” Henry interrupted. “You’re not Gordon or Percy about it. You can be blunt and outspoken at times, but you’re not malicious.”
The big green diesel managed a tentative smile.
“A-at any rate, we should probably get you moving.”
“Yeah, can’t be holding up the main line like this.”

Traintober 2023: Day 8 - Bird
Cranky Blames Henry:
Okay, so there is already an amazing post about how Henry becomes an activist for animal conservation in the modern era (and that is a headcanon I love), but what about Cranky? In the series, he’s explicitly said that he has befriended the seagulls at Brendam Docks. So – what if he ended up becoming a social media activist too? Of course, he would never willingly start a social media account to talk about the birds, and he certainly can’t access a phone that easily. So how did Cranky end up being one of the most outspoken ornithologists on the internet?
He blames Henry.
Tumblr media
See, Henry began his online presence with a blog about the nature spots of Sodor in the 90’s. I’m talking about a really old blog, with maybe a grainy video or two – but definitely a lot of pictures. At this point, Henry had a driver who was really into amateur photography, and the green engine was able to rope him into taking pictures all over Sodor. He made posts about the forest, about the hills near his infamous tunnel, about the Western coast (Duck is still confused as to why Henry came all the way to Haultraugh to stare at Dilly’s great-grand ducklings), and even about Skarloey Lake with the help of Peter Sam. And it was a very popular blog – Henry switched it up when he began to run out of nature spots by the railway and started a Tidmouth sheds community garden so he could talk to his followers about how to care for plants (Bear’s second man started a corner for cooking, using the plants grown in the garden). Fast forward a two decades, and for his twentieth anniversary online, Henry decided to visit a few local spots once more to talk about Sudrian nature and wildlife – and one of those spots was Brendam Docks. By this point, videos were a bit more reliable, so he was vlogging these spots, rather than taking pictures.
Tumblr media
And while Henry was talking about how important sustainable fishing was for the oceans, including several pointed jabs at a fisherman who used a trawling net, Cranky interrupted. Loudly. A dock worker had almost set a crate down on top of a seagull nest, and the crane went ballistic. Really rips into the poor man, telling him all about how important seagulls are, and speaking at length about why they are a key part of the environment.
Tumblr media
Henry leaves the rant in his blog, and overnight Cranky becomes an online sensation. This is just about when Instagram, Tumblr, Twitter and other social media platforms are taking off – so it spreads fast. People around the world are talking about Cranky – and for once it’s not because of his part in the TV series!
Cranky isn’t aware of his sudden internet fame until about six weeks later, when a cruise docked at Brendam and several tourists came over and asked to take pictures with the ‘bird rage crane’. There is a lot of health and safety shenanigans, but by the end Cranky is thoroughly unamused with Henry and needs to make more posts reminding people about dockyard safety and why all birds are important.
A rant or five later, and Cranky has his own vlog. The dock manager began it mostly to get Cranky to stop shouting at him – but it quickly became very positive PR for the docks. Brendam Docks isn’t exactly a tourist hotspot, but suddenly people were coming from all over to talk to Cranky about public health and safety – and more notably about wildlife in and around the docks. Cranky talked a lot about maritime creatures (including one notable time when he managed to catch a whale on camera and spent the afternoon gloating to Henry), but mostly about the birds that frequented the harbour and his crane arm.
And yes, that included one vlog where he introduced all his bird friends by name, uncharacteristically softly.
Tumblr media
Slowly, Henry and Cranky began to work together more often. It was an odd partnership, certainly – and more than once Bill and Ben hijacked a vlog by pulling pranks (or on one memorable occasion stealing the camera, and on another they somehow loaded Henry into a fishing barge; no one’s quite sure how) – but they worked together surprisingly well. Cranky drew out a lot of Henry’s old snark from his younger days, while Henry drew out a softer side of Cranky. And the two were relentless in their drive to create a wildlife sanctuary on Sodor – in particular, to get Henry’s Forest declared a national park.
The other engines didn’t exactly understand the two’s passion, but certainly did support them. This led to Henry’s Forest being named a national park in 2016 – something that the two celebrated with a special vlog that involved one dock worker suggesting they dismantle Cranky so he could attend.
Tumblr media
The two have now become international climate, wildlife and nature activists, which is rather remarkable for a coal-fired steam engine and a 1920’s diesel-powered crane. Even today, they are very vocal in their support of ‘green’ reforms (Cranky got solar panels installed at Brendam Docks, and Henry is championing biofuel alternatives to coal) and have even met Greta Thunberg and David Attenborough! But most importantly, the two still talk about their favourite birds.
Henry’s is the peregrine falcon – he likes it for its speed, plumage and its adaptability – Henry actually once managed to convince a peregrine to perch on his buffer beam and got a photo with it, which he has framed in his berth. Cranky’s is the seagull. He loves the birds, in spite of others teasing him about loving the ‘flying rats of the ocean’, and can recite a number of facts about them. He often has several perched on his crane arm, and has had a seagull build a nest on top of his cab roof.
Despite their personal preferences, both Henry and Cranky continue to wish to one day see an Australian Cassowary, partially because the pair aren’t exactly sure if they’re real or if the Australians made them up to scare foreigners.

So today marks the 1 year since the tragic train collision in Tempi, Greece that caused the loss of 57 people, mostly students in their 20s. I never see stuff about my country on my dash so I thought I'd give a quick run down for the sake of it. I don't write such things often so I'll try to keep it short and informative.
Two trains collided and subsequently exploded on this day at Tempi, a location notorious for other mass casualty accidents. I don't know which international source to look to, the language barrier is big and we're the country with lowest ranking in the freedom of press index in Europe [x]. The reason for this collision that killed at least 57 people was that although the railway was equipped with automatic controls, the switching and signaling was done manually and a lack of communication led to the lines not switching, causing a head on collision to occur. They tried to point it on human error, that the stationmaster who had only been working there for a month was unqualified for the job, which may be true but also serves as a great way to absolve of any fault the higher-ups who were aware of the lack of safety in the railways, as evidenced by later investigation showing multiple warnings sent to the respective officials from the train drivers' official body.
The victims' families were understandably not satisfied by the official investigation and decided to file a criminal lawsuit against the Prime Minister and other politicians connected to the crime. I believed they also organized an investigation of their own.
Now I don't watch the news because they don't help my depression and knowing you're being lied to is also not a positive thing. Evidence has been lost, they poured concrete over the site of the accident and built a church on it, they took so much time to find the black box that it was unusable by the time they recovered it, the church is calling for the families to "mourn silently" if they want to honor the memory of their lost ones. The former Minister of Infrastructure and Transport happens to be from my hometown. Embarrassingly in the elections that followed the "accident" this same town re-elected him. I don't even wanna get into this.
I don't have much to say, I just wanted to spread some awareness around, it's the least I can do. As a side note, I don't know what kind of tourism propaganda our government serves outside of the borders but please don't believe them. Don't come to Greece, it's not the Mediterranean paradise you see in pics.
Thank you if you read this.

The Dark Side of Honor Killings: Cases that Shocked India
Tumblr media
Honor killings remain one of the most disturbing forms of violence in India, highlighting the clash between age-old traditions and modern legal and moral standards. Rooted in rigid concepts of family honor, caste, and patriarchy, these heinous acts often target young couples who defy social norms, such as inter-caste or inter-religious relationships. What makes honor killings even more tragic is the involvement of the victims' own families, driven by the belief that they are restoring honor through violence. In most cases, the victim is a woman, although in several cases the man/boy is also targeted. The victims in some cases are also those belonging to the queer (LGBTQ+) community.
Several cases of honour killings from India’s urban and rural pockets go unreported. The National Crimes Record Bureau’s report for 2020 revealed that 25 cases of “honour killing” were reported in the preceding year. In the previous years, the reports stated that only one incident each took place in 2018 and 2017. But Evidence, an NGO, revealed in November 2019 that as many as 195 known cases of honour killings were reported from Tamil Nadu alone in the past five years.
India has witnessed several brutal cases that shook the nation’s conscience, raising awareness of the deep-seated cultural norms that perpetuate this violence. [1]
5 Recent Brutal Murders: A Closer Look
1. The Keelvenmani Murders (2021)
In another heart-wrenching case from Tamil Nadu, a Dalit boy, Nirmal Kumar, and his lover, Subhashree, from the dominant Vanniyar caste, were brutally murdered by Subhashree’s family for eloping. The couple, aged just 21 and 20, had sought refuge from Subhashree's relatives who opposed their relationship due to the caste divide. Despite fleeing for safety, they were tracked down and killed in cold blood. This modern-day horror reignited debates about casteism in India, as Subhashree's family faced no remorse for taking the lives of their own kin and her partner. The media coverage and outrage that followed demonstrated how honor killings transcend mere family dynamics and are deeply rooted in India's hierarchical social structure. [6]
2. Afsana Case (2020)
Afsana’s case was yet another painful example of how interfaith relationships can become lethal in India. Afsana, a young Muslim woman from Uttar Pradesh, fell in love with a Hindu man, which led to escalating tensions within her conservative family. Afsana’s family disapproved of the relationship, fearing that it would bring shame to their community. In a brutal turn of events, Afsana was strangled to death by her own father and brothers to preserve the family's so-called honor.Afsana’s murder was one among several interfaith love stories in India that faced a similar fate, amplifying the communal tensions surrounding interreligious marriages. Her death not only reflected the patriarchal control over women’s bodies and choices but also pointed to the growing religious intolerance in the country.[5]
3. Ilavarasan-Divya Case (2013)
The tragic love story of Ilavarasan and Divya from Tamil Nadu exposed how caste continues to dictate relationships and, in extreme cases, lead to honor-based violence. Ilavarasan, a Dalit man, married Divya, a woman from a higher Vanniyar caste, defying the rigid caste system in rural Tamil Nadu. Divya's family and her community could not tolerate their marriage, and her father was accused of driving her to leave Ilavarasan after intense pressure.Soon after, Ilavarasan was found dead near railway tracks, in what many believe to be a planned murder disguised as a suicide. The case caused widespread protests across Tamil Nadu, exposing the caste-based discrimination that still plagues rural India. Ilavarasan’s death was a grim reminder of how deep-rooted prejudices continue to determine the fate of young couples in love, often ending in tragedy. [4]
4. Manoj-Babli Case (2007)
The infamous Manoj-Babli case from Haryana became a turning point in India's fight against honor killings. Manoj and Babli, who belonged to the same "gotra" (clan), defied societal norms by eloping and marrying. Their marriage enraged Babli’s family and village elders, who deemed their union incestuous, even though it was legal by Indian law. The Khap Panchayat, a local caste council, ordered their murder, and the couple was abducted, tortured, and killed by Babli's relatives. This case was significant as it led to the conviction of several members of the Panchayat, as well as Babli’s family, making it the first time an Indian court had handed down such a severe punishment for an honor killing. The case exposed the authority of Khaps in rural India, which often override state laws, and underscored the urgent need for legal reform to protect young couples. [3]
5. Nitish Katara Murder Case (2002)
Another chilling case is that of Nitish Katara, a young businessman who was brutally murdered by Vikas Yadav, the son of a prominent politician, because he was in love with Vikas’ sister, Bharti Yadav. The Yadav family, a powerful political dynasty, opposed the relationship as they felt Nitish did not belong to their caste or social class. Nitish was abducted, beaten, and burnt to death in a gruesome crime that shocked the country. The long legal battle for justice was a testimony to how honor killings are often connected to the powerful political class, where perpetrators use their influence to evade justice. The Katara family fought relentlessly, and in 2016, Vikas Yadav was sentenced to life imprisonment, marking a major victory against entrenched social inequalities and caste hierarchies. [2]
Laws to Deal with ‘HONOUR KILLING’
In India, honor killings are not governed by a specific law but are prosecuted under general criminal laws, particularly those dealing with murder, homicide, and violence. However, there have been legal measures, court rulings, and proposed bills to address the unique nature of such crimes. Below is an overview of the legal framework and key court interventions in dealing with honor killings:
1. Indian Penal Code (IPC)
Honor killings are generally prosecuted under the following sections of the IPC, which deal with murder and other violent crimes:
Section 302 (Murder): Punishes the crime of murder with life imprisonment or the death penalty.
Section 307 (Attempt to Murder): Applies to cases where the victim survives the attack.
Section 120B (Criminal Conspiracy): Used when multiple people are involved in planning and executing the killing, such as family members or community leaders.
Section 34 (Acts Done by Several Persons in Furtherance of Common Intention): Often used when several people collectively carry out the crime.
Section 364 (Kidnapping or Abduction in Order to Murder): Applied when the victim is kidnapped before being murdered.
Section 376 (Rape): In some cases, sexual assault is also part of the violence related to honor crimes.
2. The Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005
While not specifically designed for honor killings, this act provides civil remedies for women facing violence or abuse, including threats of harm related to "family honor." In cases where women are threatened with honor-based violence by their families, they can seek protection under this law.
3. The Indian Constitution
Article 21 (Right to Life): The Supreme Court of India has held that honor killings violate the fundamental right to life and personal liberty enshrined in Article 21 of the Constitution.
Article 14 (Right to Equality): Honor killings, often motivated by caste or gender-based discrimination, are seen as violations of this article, which guarantees equality before the law.
Article 15 (Prohibition of Discrimination on Grounds of Religion, Race, Caste, etc.): In cases where caste or religious differences motivate honor killings, Article 15 is cited.
4. Key Court Judgments
The Supreme Court of India has played a crucial role in addressing honor killings through its judgments, recognizing them as a serious violation of fundamental rights.
Shakti Vahini vs. Union of India (2018): In this landmark judgment, the Supreme Court strongly condemned honor killings and directed state governments to take preventive, remedial, and punitive measures. The court issued guidelines aimed at curbing the influence of Khap Panchayats (traditional caste councils) that often sanction such killings.
Arumugam Servai vs. State of Tamil Nadu (2011): The Supreme Court declared that any person or organization supporting or encouraging honor killings would be subjected to harsh penalties, including the death penalty in certain cases.
5. Proposed Legislation: Prevention of Crimes in the Name of 'Honor' and Tradition Bill, 2010
This proposed bill, introduced in the Rajya Sabha in 2010, sought to address honor killings specifically. Although the bill has not yet become law, it aimed to:
Criminalize the intimidation or harassment of couples who marry against societal or familial norms.
Penalize acts of violence, harassment, or coercion by family members or caste councils (Khap Panchayats).
Impose stricter penalties, including imprisonment and fines, for those found guilty of such crimes.
Criminalize the act of forcing a person into marriage to restore "family honor."
The bill has not been passed, and honor killings continue to be prosecuted under existing criminal laws.
6. Law Commission of India (2012) Recommendations
The Law Commission of India, in its 242nd Report, recommended a specific legal framework to deal with honor crimes. The report called for:
The introduction of a new Section 300A in the IPC to criminalize honor-based crimes.
Recognizing crimes committed in the name of honor as a distinct offense, with special provisions for harsher punishment.
Creating a legal mechanism to tackle the involvement of village or caste panchayats in sanctioning honor killings.
7. Preventive Measures
Police Protection: Courts can direct the police to provide protection to couples who fear for their lives due to the threat of honor killings.
District Magistrate’s Role: The Supreme Court has directed district magistrates to take preventive measures, such as keeping a watch on areas where such crimes are prevalent, and ensuring that couples who marry out of choice are protected. [7]
8. Death Penalty for Honor Killings
While Indian law does not provide a specific provision for the death penalty in honor killing cases, courts have imposed the death sentence in some cases under the "rarest of the rare" doctrine. This doctrine allows for the death penalty in cases where the crime is deemed exceptionally brutal or heinous, as in many honor killing cases.
Honor Killings: The Larger Picture
The common thread in these cases is the deep-seated social structure in India that prioritizes family honor, caste purity, and community approval over individual freedoms and personal choices. Honor killings often occur in rural areas but are not limited to them. The influence of caste-based councils, or Khaps, is still strong in many parts of the country, where they wield unofficial but significant authority, often leading to such heinous crimes.
The Legal Struggle
Despite the growing awareness around honor killings, India does not have a specific law addressing this form of violence. Such killings are prosecuted under general murder laws, but activists argue that these laws fail to address the cultural and social factors that fuel such crimes. Several attempts have been made to pass a comprehensive law targeting honor-based violence, but progress has been slow.
Conclusion
Honor killings reflect the darkest aspects of India’s social fabric, where archaic traditions collide with modern values of personal freedom and choice. The cases of Manoj-Babli, Nitish Katara, Ilavarasan-Divya, and others serve as tragic reminders of the lives lost to this outdated concept of family and social honor. As India continues to evolve, the need for legal reforms, societal education, and support systems for young couples becomes ever more critical to prevent such atrocities in the future. Although India does not have a dedicated law for honor killings, the existing legal framework provides several avenues to prosecute and punish offenders. The judiciary has been proactive in addressing the issue through landmark judgments, while civil society continues to push for specific legislation that acknowledges the unique social and cultural dimensions of honor crimes. Until a comprehensive legal framework is enacted, honor killings will continue to be prosecuted under general criminal laws, and the battle against these brutal practices will rely heavily on enforcement, awareness, and education.

TTTE AU LORE DUMP
(Wasps of Wisteria aka, WOW)
[ Before we start I must add some disclaimers, this au & discussion around contain; Bugs, Body Horror, Possession/Mind Control, Character Death & overall dark themes. If these things disturb or discomfort you please scroll away now for your own safety & health. You matter more than this silly thing.]
So this au takes place some time after day of the diesels & TATMR. Maybe like six months afterwards if we're looking at time period. Though it's not really specified.
This all starts like several centuries (like..120 & half years) ago. Like before sodor railway was as big as it is today. They are in the fucking trenches here dude. It was literally just the old farts of the engines. Like. Edward, duke, fearless Freddy etc (yes I know about fearless Freddy and I love him..fearless Freddy lover RISE.)
Diesel 10 & Lady are still on good terms before Diesel 10 goes crazy & tries to kill Lady in order to take all of her gold dust for himself in an act of jealousy & rage. There backstory is like Luna & celestia expect Luna just gets crazier & goes full out with body mods & starts talking to a non senaint claws on his back that connected to his crazy fucking everything tool arm that 100% definitely has a Lazer in it.
& Celestia grows resentful due to all the trouble luna has caused her but at the same time she can only feel sorrow as she knows he is good. He was good. but his mind is far to rotted away because she literally turned him into a god like her and didn't know the consequences of turning a normal ass guy with extremely high iq and can make robots and shit immortal. She keeps giving him bits of gold dust whenever they fight ( which is rare that they get close enough to) " by accident" in order to keep him alive because she can't handle him dying even though that is what would end his eternal suffering she just can't let go.
Her grief for someone gone has made a man that cannot live. Oh and diesel is aware she's giving him the gold dust but let's her because he still deep down cares and the thought of her grefing for all eternity alone terrfiys him deep inside he core because if what he became from just anger and rage, imagine what she could become from grief. Primal, human grief that grabs you by the throat and chokes you until you are gurgling and spitting up your own past blood and watching it run down your chest as the denial begins to fade and the rage begins to form.
However there is this motherfucker named Wasp who loves controlling people so they can cause chaos and despair. The also have a wasp face but a human body. It's not there's either btw! They are possessing the first FC wife btw...sorry (deceased) Lady Hatt the 1 (This obviously takes place after the second dude is born)

Bomb Trains
On certain cold nights I can hear the steel wheels of trains sounding along the rails at the Conway Yard along the Ohio River. The Ohio River begins at Pittsburgh goes north for a while and makes a sharp turn around Monaca. Not far from Monaca is a recently opened Shell Petrochemical Complex where  fracked gas turned to ethylne.
I estimate that the Conway Yard is about midway between Pittsburgh and Monaca and the train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio is a similar distance. All of it is in my neck of the woods
On the evening of Febuary 3rd there was a train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio. Twenty of the cars of the fifty car train carried toxic chemicals. Five of the derailed cars carried vinyl chloride. The decision was made to make a controlled release of the vinyl chloride. A fire ensued. A piece at CCN takes an interesting angle, After a train derailment, Ohio residents are living the plot of a movie they helped make.
I first learned about the derailment in East Palestine on Tumblr at least a couple of days after the derailment. And that fact concerns me. There is significant reporting about the derailment now and much to find out and to think about.
Over the years my awareness of significant risks in rail transportation has heightened A couple of things. First in 2006 a developer grading a site for a Walmart caused a landslide which closed a highway and the Norfolk Southern rail line not too far from the Conway Yard. There is an excellent picture posted at USGS, Landslide at site of former Dixmont State Hospital, Pennsylvania. At hearing prior the development's approval there warnings about the potentials for landslides were expressed vigorusly. The closure of the rail line caused significant economic losses  by delays in shipments to cities to the East Coast.
There's a bottle neck for rail traffic around Pittsburgh, which you can glean from a railway map, here. With the production of Bakken shale oil and Canadian tar sands oil the dangers of rail disasters became widely known. Especially after  Lac-Mégantic rail disaster when term "bomb trains" became popular. Now when driving around Pittsburgh there are some places trains travel that make me shudder.  Most of usdon’t live far from rail tracks, so rail safety really is kind of important to us.

Breastfeeding Myths and Facts: Separating Fiction from Reality
Tumblr media
A wonderful and natural method to nourish your baby is breastfeeding. It gives your baby all the nutrients they need for healthy growth and development. Breastfeeding not only delivers the best nutrition for the infant, but it also has many other advantages for the mother.
Breastfeeding for the baby can help strengthen their immune system, lower their risk of illnesses, and minimise their risk of SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome). Additionally, breastfeeding fosters a close link between mother and child by providing safety and comfort to your infant.
Breastfeeding can help moms lose weight, cut their risk of postpartum depression, and lower their risk of developing certain cancers. Additionally, nursing generates hormones that facilitate bonding and relaxation, making it a wonderful method to establish a connection with your child.
Tumblr media
Along with the beautiful journey of breastfeeding, it comes along with lots of myths and misconceptions. Many mothers are not even aware of the reality of these myths.
Breastfeeding is easy: It’s not easy to breastfeed a baby because a mother needs practical support with positioning the baby so that the baby can latch. Breastfeeding takes time and practice for both mothers and babies and is also time intensive, so mothers need space and support at home and work.
Mothers should only eat plain food while breastfeeding: breastfeeding mothers should need to eat a balanced diet. There is no need to change food habits unless the doctor suggests it.
You should separate the newborn baby and mother so that she can take rest: Doctors, nurses, and midwives encourage the practice of skin-to-skin contact immediately after the birth. Bringing the baby to direct contact with the mother helps to establish breastfeeding.
Mothers shouldn’t breastfeed if sick: Mothers can typically continue nursing when unwell, depending on the disease. You must ensure that you receive the proper care and enough rest, good nutrition, and hydration. Often, the antibodies your body produces to combat your sickness or illness will be passed on to your baby, helping him or her to develop their defences.
It’s hard to wean the baby if mothers breastfeed for more than a year: There is evidence that nursing for up to two years is advantageous for both women and children, but there is no proof that stopping breastfeeding beyond one year is more complicated. Since every mother and baby are unique, they must decide jointly how long to nurse.
Breastfeeding is a journey for mothers and babies that is both challenging and rewarding. In today’s generation, too many households believe in such myths and probably there is no one to debunk them. Filaantro along with Child Help Foundation has helped breastfeeding mothers understand the benefits of breastfeeding, the myths, and the facts. The organization has also established 18 Baby Feeding Centres in Pan India at hospitals, temples, and railway stations. Through this initiative, 56,615 beneficiaries have benefitted. Thus, helping mothers with a safe and secure haven to comfortably breastfeed their babies.

An unknown number of right-wing extremists have traveled from Finland to Ukraine to take part in its defence against Russia's invasion, according to Kuopio's Savon Sanomat and other papers carrying an Uutissuomalainen news group report (siirryt toiseen palveluun).
According to the Finnish Security Intelligence Service (Supo), individual far-right volunteers from Finland are on the front lines in Ukraine.
"Even though Russia's war of aggression has not attracted a significant number of extremists, there are potential threats of radicalization associated with the participation of even individual persons," Milla Meretniemi, Supo's communications and public relations manager told Uutissuomalainen.
Meretniemi said that time spent in a conflict zone and combat experience can have a further radicalizing effect.
For operational reasons, Supo has declined to say whether it is aware of any combatants who have returned to Finland from Ukraine and who were radicalized at the front.
Supo stressed that it is only interested in those who have gone to Ukraine who it knows support some extremist ideology or are seeking to gain combat experience to increase their capacity for violence.
"The vast majority of those who those who go [to Ukraine] are therefore not of interest from the point of view of national security," Meretniemi added.
The paper noted that volunteers fighting in Ukraine do not represent the Finnish state or the Finnish Defense Forces in any way.
As a rule, the Finnish Security Intelligence Service does not monitor those leaving Finland for conflict areas. However, it estimates that dozens of volunteers from Finland have gone to fight in Ukraine.
Supo said it is not aware of a single confirmed case of a Finnish citizen who has died fighting in Ukraine.
Rail strike threat delayed
The union representing railway engine drivers on Thursday rejected the national mediator's proposal for a settlement of its contract dispute with employers.
The economic and business daily Kauppalehti reported (siirryt toiseen palveluun) that the union stated that the biggest reason for rejection of the settlement proposal was that it did not include text changes that would improve working hours.
With talks bogged down, Employment Minister Tuula Haatainen (SDP) stepped in to postpone a rail drivers' strike scheduled to begin 6 March.
The union, RAU, has issued a new strike warning for the period between 20 March and 31 March. The strike will stop train traffic if an agreement is not reached before then.
Mediation in the dispute is to continue at the beginning of next week.
Burnout still a problem
Helsingin Sanomat (siirryt toiseen palveluun) reported that although Finland's legislation on occupational health and safety obliges employers to take steps to prevent employees' mental exhaustion, compliance with the law leaves much to be desired.
An update to the law that will enter into force in June also mentions psycho-social factors and specifies what it means in terms of the content of work, work arrangements and issues related to the social aspects of the work community.
Päivi Laakso, the head of the occupational health and safety department of the Southern Finland Regional State Administrative Agency pointed out that employers already have an obligation to act in such a way that mental factors do not pose a danger to the health of employees.
"The employer should systematically find out which of these [mental load risk factors] exist and assess whether they cause health harm. These can be an excessive amount of work, too many interruptions to work, unreasonable time pressures or stress caused by working schedules," she explained.
According to Laakso, two to three thousand on-site inspections are carried out annually to check on compliance with these rules. Last year, employers were given notices of non-compliance at two-thirds of those worksites.
A typical situation is one where, following an organizational reform, the work is distributed unfairly or the actually tasks that fall under job descriptions have remained unclear.
Winter's return
Iltalehti reported to its readers (siirryt toiseen palveluun) that the warmer weather we've been enjoying of late will soon be a memory, with nighttime temperatures at the start of next week again plunging to -10C to -20C around the country, and as low as -30C in the north.
According to the latest forecasts, cold air will dominate the weather for the next couple of weeks, and no warming is expected in the 10-15 day forecasts.
On Friday, a low pressure will be rolling in from the west, bringing snow showers to the southwestern and southern parts of the country.

Anti-Corrosion Coating Market Insights: Eco-Friendly Solutions Boost Market to USD 42.8 Billion
Tumblr media
The anti-corrosion coating market has been on an upward trajectory, driven by a growing demand for materials that can protect surfaces from the damaging effects of corrosion. With industries like construction, automotive, and oil & gas increasingly relying on these protective coatings, the market is expected to grow significantly from USD 34.5 billion in 2023 to USD 42.8 billion by 2030, at a CAGR of 3.1%. But what exactly is behind this growth, and how will the market evolve over the next few years?
Understanding Anti-Corrosion Coatings
At its core, anti-corrosion coatings are materials applied to surfaces to prevent corrosion. Corrosion, a natural process that causes materials to degrade when exposed to environmental factors such as moisture, chemicals, or salt, can cause significant damage to infrastructure, machinery, and even vehicles. Anti-corrosion coatings create a protective layer that acts as a barrier, slowing down or completely preventing the effects of corrosion.
These coatings are used across various industries, including marine, construction, automotive, and oil & gas, where exposure to harsh environmental conditions is common. With their ability to prolong the life of assets and reduce maintenance costs, these coatings are crucial in enhancing the durability and performance of infrastructure.
