Mav was gonna kill him. He was gonna kill him for getting killed when he promised his godfather he wouldn’t. When he’d signed up for the Navy thirteen hours after he turned 18, he had promised Mav he would stay safe. Honestly, though, Mav should have known better than to ask, being retired Navy himself. And with his husband still a high ranking Admiral. Sure, Ice was more of a desk jockey now, but he’d been in plenty of scrapes and dangerous situations to land him that cushy office job.

He coughed, bringing up probably a little more than sea water. The broken rib shifted and grated under his soaked tac vest. He could hear screaming, the rest of his team barking orders. He vaguely heard Smith bellow “hostages secure, where the fuck are those medics!”

Being a Navy Seal was the coolest job ever. You got to save people’s lives, and look super badass while doing it. But Bradley was beginning to wonder if it might be hazardous to his health, what with him lying in a puddle of grease, ocean water, and, well he didn’t want to think about the other thing. Ice had specifically said “don’t do anything stupid,” during the phone call before his team moved out. Ice was gonna kill him too, probably.

The thing is, okay sure, what he did WAS stupid. But his team wouldn’t have gotten access to this hijacked ship if he hadn’t done what he’d done, and dammit if that’s not a hill he’d die on.

He snorted, coughed. The hole in his side right under his vest throbbed continuously now. He was being jostled roughly. Through the ringing in his ears he could hear the pulsating wooshwooshwoosh of a helicopter close by.

“-shaw? Rooster! Hey, come on man!” A quick glance told him Ramirez was at his side, pawing at him. The slap to the face was too much, couldn’t a guy die in peace? Come on. “Lem’lone.”

“No can do, brother. Play nice with the medics.”

He closed his eyes and shook his head. No can do to that, either. Medics were pompous assholes. Oh, look at me! I’m really smart and I can save your life with a plastic straw and a roll of duct tape. Ugh.

The jostling was back but he didn’t bother opening his eyes again. Until he heard a dulcet - southern? - some kind of country ass twanged tone say “is this the dumbass that blew himself up?”

Bradley took offense to that. “I blew the side of the boat up. I was just there when it happened.” Is what he meant to say. What came out was a pained mix of vowels and consonants strung together in a, frankly, pitiful moan.

“Hey,” the twang was back, closer this time. Something swatted his cheek and he frowned. “Hey, eyes on me Lieutenant.”

He opened his eyes just to glare meanly at the guy he was about to tell off. The words died in his throat.

Oh God.

He’d already died, hadn’t he?

He’d died and this was the angel who was taking him to Heaven.

Bright sunlight shown directly behind this angel, shading Bradley’s face from the harsh rays. It lit up the fiery blond hair from behind, casting him in a hazy gold glow. Green eyes gazed down at him, little frown lines between light brows. Huh, who knew angels wore fatigues?

Makes sense, though.

His angel was talking again, perfect teeth and pretty pink tongue flashing. He had the cutest nose he’d ever seen on a man. Well, maybe angels were non-gender specific, he didn’t know the anatomy of heavenly beings.

Bradley reached out and touched the angel’s nose to see. The green eyes crossed. “Hey!” The voice finally cut through the murkiness in his brain. His hand was caught and placed back down at his side. “No boops til the second date, man. Stay still.” His vest was forcefully yanked. He grunted. Somebody said something about a TBI. He used to know what that meant.

“Eyes open, Lieutenant…where’s your” - he was jostled again, the angel glanced down at his chest - “Bradshaw. Eyes on me.”

Easy peasy. He could look at this angel all day long.

Curiously, the angel’s gold skin pinked at the cheeks. “Angel, huh?” The angel huffed, and then he smiled.

God, angels were beautiful.

“You know, Bradshaw, that was really fucking stupid, what you did.”

The curse took Bradley aback. Angels of the Lord said fuck?

“I mean it was really fucking brave, but really fucking stupid. We were watching you, y’know? On the side of the boat. What the hell were you thinking, huh? When it happened, when you went into the water? It took four fucking minutes for’em to find you and bring you back up. You were almost shark chum, you fucking idiot. You saved those people. Damn.” The twang in his voice got heavier as he frantically worked over Bradley’s body. He could feel warm hands on him. He wanted to feel those warm hands on him for the rest of his life.

The ground under him shook with the sudden, sucking force of an explosion…somewhere.

He could hear screaming, cursing. Where was his team? He closed his eyes. A solid, heavy weight fell over his body a half second before he felt bits of debris raining down over him. When he opened his eyes, the angel’s pretty face was an inch from his, breathing in the air he blew out. The angel was lying on top of him, covering, shielding his body with his own. And from the words he was screaming in Bradley’s ear, was decidedly not happy.

“-damn shit fucking mother FUCK! Shit! Sanders, help me with him, we gotta go! Fuckfuckfuck-“

Bradley frowned. He didn’t want his angel to be unhappy or scared or angry. He ached to hold this beautiful being close to his chest and keep him safe and happy forever. The pitiful whine escaped his lips before he could stop it.

“Hey. Hey, hey Bradshaw look at me.”

Those green eyes were back on him. Warm hands framed his chilled face. He could drown in those green eyes and warm hands and he would be content.

“You’re okay. I’m gonna get you outta here. You just keep those dopey cow eyes on me, okay? I got you. I got you.”

Bradley had never felt more at peace, even as he slipped into darkness. What harm could come to him?

What do you think Ai represents in the story in a thematic sense?

This is probably gonna be The low hanging fruit answer of all time but I think Ai pretty straightforwardly represents "love" and (at least in the first chunk of the manga), Aqua and Ruby's relationships to her and their memories of her are sort of, subtextual proxy for how the two of them relate to love.

Ruby throws herself into love as eagerly as she does with everything else - as a kid not only starved of novel experiences but love specifically, she idealizes it and gorges herself on it as soon as she has an avenue to engage with it. She's incredibly open and willing to love and be loved by other people, which in turn is represented by her having a relationship with Ai (& eventually, her memories of Ai) that is on the whole a lot healthier than Aqua's.

By contrast, Aqua is a person who deeply struggles with the idea of loving others and being loved in turn thanks to his absolutely dogshit self image and rock bottom self worth. @penguinkyun put it in a way I really vibe with a couple weeks ago:

i think its both that [aqua] feels like he doesn't deserve the love that he gets and that his love is "wrong" — its a bit complicated because its not outright said but aqua loves to put himself in the villain role every time because he refuses to acknowledge that hes losing the idgaf war severely and because he hates himself so much that he believes all his actions or at least most of them are inherently manipulative — exhibit a: akane and ruby finding goros body, aqua entirely blames himself for it despite having literally nothing to do with the actual corpse discovery. hes very similar to ai in that they both hate themselves deeply and believe they dont deserve love and both having similar issues with love in general, even though they're not the exact same

Obvs we see this reflected in their other relationships (as Lace points out here re: AquAka), but their bond with Ai is both formative and foundational and useful as a lens through which to analyze their other relationships.

Within the context of OnK's commentary on the industry, Ai is also the celebrity and discussions of the way idolhood and celebrity culture affected her in particular also function as proxies to discuss these issues in the industry as a whole.

As a sidebar, this is kind of why Ruby's ending of "surpassing Ai" kind of falls apart - within Oshi no Ko, Ai is THE symbol of celebrity and idolhood to the extent that every other performer in the series is evaluated by how they do and don't measure up to her legacy. The literal in-universe symbol of radiant charisma and captivating charm is Ai's symbol. She is given massive weight in the narrative as the embodiment and archetype of the perfect idol in a way that Ruby is not, so the attempts to be like "oh uh, ruby is a better idol than ai now btw" just feel sorta half assed LMAO

The tournament for all the tragic and estranged siblings out there!! I was inspired by @mewtonian-physics's sibling showdown and @adhdswagcompetition.

Only submit a character set once! Please no cheating, I am going to do my best to include as many as I can

That being said I am going to limit it to 2-3 sets from one source

Tragic Siblings are pretty self explanatory but its any tragic, estranged, or the like siblings!

Some Sibling Sets that are for sure getting in are: The Rag Bros (Kaeya and Diluc), Nahyuta Sahdmadhi and Apollo Justice, and Della and Donald Duck so you do not need to nominate them

i am back, the new kaeya skin has all the wings on its vision TT i think this means im right, but also i am crying TT TT

kaeya lore thought because i have a hyper fixation and i have to tell someone

ok so the whole prophetic ‘kaeya hasn’t made a clean break w his past and has to make a big decision’ is most likely about khaenri’ah vs monstadt/teyvat, assuming that’s true, here’s my hypothesis for what he’ll choose

originally i thought it could be 50/50, or a case where he picks khaenri’ah but then switches teams and sacrifices himself for monstadt (probably saves his brother? would be rlly sad and hoyoverse like making us sad, would also b very cyclical + somewhat redeeming for the dumb decisions he’s made) however, since the new diluc lore i think he’ll pick monstadt, it might still be a bait and switch or he might even spy on khaenri’ah (again cos it’s super cyclical + would represent his acceptance of his past, and his choice to stop running from it, but also still the autonomy and freedom from the secret that’s been hanging over him his whole life) and then reveal he’s actually on monstadt’s side, but i’m 75% sure he’ll pick teyvat because in one of the letters it says that when diluc is away kaeya sometimes comes to stay at the winery and when he does he stays in his childhood bedroom (yeah ok maybe i nearly cried at this)

why do i think this means he’ll pick teyvat? it’s because it shows he still cares about his family and finds (some kind of) comfort in being in his childhood home, whether that’s bittersweet for him or if it’s a case of healing and learning either way it clearly shows he cares about his childhood in a positive way, also the fact he stays when diluc isn’t there (even tho he probably knows diluc wouldn’t turn him away even if he wanted to) shows he cares about their (sibling) relationship (don’t make it weird thank u) and diluc’s feelings, and he’s realised that he’s made shortsighted decisions and messed up before by not thinking about diluc’s feelings and he cares enough to change his behaviour because of it because ultimately they’re still brothers (and they should just fucking talk about the shit they both went thru + properly reconcile, but no they’re both repressed and won’t)

Petition to rename Ragbros to Ragrich/Rag-rich bros. Family doesn’t need to share a last name. And it’s unclear if Kaeya ever went by the Ragnvindr name. I think Ragbros is cool, but I think we should also consider that Kaeya has a last name of his own
