A writer’s guide to forests: traveling through the woods
Getting from point A to point B is something that both people in real life and the characters of your story will have to figure out. Whether as a means to get to a plot point, or as a part of the plot itself, travel presents opportunities for the writer.
Hack ‘n slash- Where paths are nonexistent, your characters will literally have to blaze a trail (the ‘blaze’ in this case has nothing to do with fire. Instead it is a trail marker made by carving a mark into a tree. The mark resembles the white patch seen on the forehead of mammals, most often horses.) Being the pioneer is slow going, especially if the undergrowth is thick and requires clearing. Cut bamboo can go through the foot, poison oak and poison ivy can give a nasty rash, and biting insects can make life miserable. And then there is the matter of marking the trail. A character on the run will not want to advertise their location and will do their best to keep their trail hidden. But for others, they will want to mark the trail. Stone cairns, arrows, blaze marks in trees, and even sticks and knotted grass can point out the path to other travelers. This can be helpful to others, but it can also present a danger. Thieves and outlaws can create false trails that lead travelers into a trap or ambush.
Game trails- Animals have their habits. They like to take the same path between places. Over time these develop into trails that crisscross the forest floor. For a character on the run, or those who needs to make haste, these are a tempting choice to follow. But be careful. Some animals are able to traverse terrain too difficult for humans (narrow ledges, near vertical faces, and the gaps underneath fallen trees are not fun places to be). And your characters may encounter more than deer or rabbits. Predator species hang out around game trails as they can be fruitful hunting grounds.
Existing paths and roads- Roads can range from simple dirt paths to paved highways. These will be the most direct routes between the principle settlements in your story. Prosperous areas will have well maintained roads with travelers and patrols using them frequently. Characters may also encounter watchtowers, farms, and inns along the way. Poorer regions, those affected by war, or more remote regions will have less well maintained roads, fewer travelers, and few to no amenities between towns. And if your characters can use the roads, expect hostile armies, outlaws, and highwaymen to use them as well. And where the roads go may be limited to the most populated regions, forcing your characters to leave the path if they want to get to isolated villages, caves, temples, or even a wizard’s tower.
Use the water- Of course, you can have your characters forgo land transportation and use the rivers, lakes, and seas. Rafts, ferry boats, and ocean going ships are all viable options. It should be noted that these are not perfect solutions. Rapids and waterfalls will force characters back onto land until they find gentler waters. Storms can delay or sink vessels, and cold winters will freeze water over. Of course, a frozen river or lake is just an excuse to get out the ice skates. Droughts will dry up streams and small lakes, and recent rains can turn placid waters into unsurvivable whitewater.
Up in the trees- Hate to burst your bubble here, but swinging from vines is something that only exists in fiction. If you try to do this in real life, it will not work out well…provided you can even find sufficient vines or fig roots. Of course, in your story, you are free to do what you want. Nothing is going to stop you…well except maybe for your readers and the critics who will pan you for using what may be considered an overused and unoriginal trope. Other options include bridges, cable cars, or even zip lines.
Taking flight- Of course, the forest will not pose an obstacle if your characters can simply fly. This can be achieved by characters that possess wings of some sort. They could have a winged mount, or they could hitch a ride on a vehicle like a helicopter or ultralight plane.
Underground- If in doubt, take a cue from moles and dwarves. Tunnels can serve the same function as roads, with all the benefits and drawbacks included. Of course your characters will also have to be aware that cave-ins are a real and present danger. These can be natural, or deliberate sabotage. And your characters best hope all the recent tunneling hasn’t awaken any ancient evils from long ago…

The Early Rodentocene: 5 million years post-establishment
Tumblr media
Evasive Maneuvers: Defenses of the Cricetomurids
For many eons, in the Early Rodentocene, the hamsters of HP-02017 lived a blissful existence free of much worry or threat. While there were now indeed factors such as diseases, parasites, competition and changing patterns of food availability that had now served to keep their populations from exploding into disastrous levels as they once had in the first few centuries of the Early Rodentocene, they, nonetheless had no enemies to fear--except each other.
Over the generations, however, as the hamsters specialized and began to diverge from one another into different species, some hamsters had evolved to fill in a then-open and vacant niche to exploit a new, plantiful and uncontested food source: other hamsters. And thus would come the huntsters: the first predators of the Rodentocene that would become agents of a new round of adaptive radiation as an evolutionary arms race began between them and their prey.
The gouties grew larger, the jermas grew faster and more agile, the peachpitters sought refuge in the trees and the shrewbils burrowed ever deeper in their tunnels. Yet some of the more mundane cricetomurids, relatives of the banded dawndusk, experimented on some rather novel new means to protect themselves from their enemies.
The spiny bristleback (Echinocricetus spinus) developed coarse, stiff guard hairs on its back that made for some irritating bristles should it be grabbed from behind. These hairs, rigid and brittle, possessed barbed ends that easily broke off when it embedded into a predator. They were, at least for now, still too fine and fragile to cause serious harm, but they were a very unpleasant sensation for any unlucky huntster that got them in its vulnerable and sensitive eyes, nose and forepaws. Over time, some bristlebacks even developed a resistance to the toxins of certain plants, chewing them to a pulp and rubbing against its juices to make themselves even more unpalatable to predators.
The river puffpaddle (Hydrocricetus bullibucca), on the other hand, prefers to flee than fight: making use of a most unexpected part of its anatomy. Frequenting the banks of rivers and streams to forage on plants, mosses, seeds and small invertebrates, it spent much of its time near the water and even dug their burrows nearby, just barely out of reach of the water's highest point.
When attacked, the puffpaddle leaps into the stream and deploys its built-in life rafts: its own expandable cheek pouches, once useful for storing food, now fill up with air and keep the small creature afloat as it paddles to the other bank, using broad feet with partially-webbed digits. Huntsters, being far poorer swimmers, often refuse to risk drowning over a meal, and often give up the chase, allowing the puffpaddle to swim off another day.
Over time, as the eons passed, these simple tactics would have far more important consequences into the distant future. The spiny bristleback would give rise to the heckhogs, a clade of prickly, omnivorous duskmice whose bristles have progressed to full-on quills: ones sufficient to make them inedible to the vast majority of carnivores that would come to be in the Glaciocene and the Temperocene. But the puffpaddle, perhaps, would go down a far more unexpected route. In the Middle Rodentocene, some of its descendants would specialize not only to escape into the water, but actually live and forage in it. They would thus become the beaver-like pondrats, who in the Therocene come to colonize the seas as the marine bayvers, some of which, unburdened by gravity, commit to the water as the giant, fully marine cricetaceans, reaching titanic proportions in the cold, productive seas of the Glaciocene.

“ I SEA YOU. ” ft. kim gyuvin
gyuvin x gn!reader, genre : fluff & comfort, warnings : mention of anxiety and overwhelming feelings, wc : 2,3k>
author's note : this is a really, very, truly personal fic, so i'm sorry if you don't recognize or identify with y/n.. but still, i hope you'll like it anyway 😙👍🏻 also, could this be my official comeback? ..who knows..
Tumblr media
ever since you were little, you've always considered the sea your comfort zone, your escape. the sound of the waves and the feel of salt water on your skin had a way of dissipating all your worries, help you avoid drowning under pressure and stress. you've long believed that nothing else in the world could give you a similar sensation — not even the hottest summer sun, not even the most beautiful spring blossom tree, not even the tastiest winter hot chocolate, not even the reddest leaf on an autumn tree. nothing could compare to the comfort of the sea in your heart.
that's why you've continued to visit this beach, which means so much to you, every week. this little beach, almost always deserted, where the clear horizon offers you all the splendour of the sky living side by side with the ocean. the palette of blue inked in your memory is enough to soothe you on rainy evenings, but you need the sound of the ocean coming out of a giant shell to soothe your mind. and even if you have to travel miles from your student apartment to get to what makes you so happy, you'll do it without hesitation. but no longer alone.
on the long river of your quiet life, a little boat named kim gyuvin decided to follow a stream to reach the blue ocean of your heart. it was no mean feat — even if you have to admit that the sincerity of his smile made you sink delicately to the bottom of the well of love. he crossed your path by chance, and kept crossing it. again and again. until you accept him on your raft. he hadn't been that insistent, but what really wins you over is feeling that gentle warmth in your heart every time he looks at you with all the goodness in the world in the corner of his eyes, accompanied by the most beautiful smile on the planet. the same warmth you get from watching a sunset reflected on the ocean's blue expanse.
« shall we go? » you suddenly heard, in a voice as gentle as a summer breeze, bringing you out of your deepest thoughts. turning your head to the right, your absent gaze fell on gyuvin's peaceful face, you smiled tenderly, gently grabbing the hand he was holding out to you to get up and follow him out the door.
the trip to the beach didn't seem as long as it used to be, now that a warm hand was keeping yours company. you no longer had to show him the way, as he now knew the route by heart — even better than you. but today, something seemed to have changed inside your heart. maybe it was because of the way his freshly dyed black hair swept across his forehead in the same way that grains of sand move across the beach in the wind. maybe it was the way numerous shivers ran through your body every time his shoulder brushed yours, like when cold sea water touches your feet on autumn mornings. maybe it was simply the beauty of his face that easily equalled the beauty of a sunset shining on the surface of the ocean.
a ton of maybe trotted through your mind as you struggled to stay focused on the road, far too busy watching the slightest feature of gyuvin's face. even his profile was perfect. unconsciously tightening the grip of your hand around his, gyuvin turns his soft gaze on your face, his pretty brown eyes instantly locked in yours. he was surprisingly so calm — usually, he couldn't help being an overexcited puppy, and you liked that about him. he contrasted with your far too calm personality — he was like the tsunami of your life, shaking up your habits for the better, of course.
but gyuvin knew that these seaside escapades were important for you, that they were necessary for the proper functioning of your mind, they were made to soothe you. so he knew how to stand still and give you the chance to recharge your batteries in peace, even though he had to admit that having the privilege of accompanying you was the greatest accomplishment of all.
let's go back up the creek into the reverse river, to revisit the first time gyuvin's curious eyes landed on your hair floating in the ocean breeze. he must have been in his fifties, where adolescence made him want to escape far away from everything. it was an afternoon when the late summer wind kept reminding him that school was just around the corner, after running aimlessly for an hour, his footsteps led him to this hidden, deserted small beach, where only the sound of the waves crashing on the sand disturbed the tranquillity of the place. it was so beautiful, so pleasant — he felt as if he were floating, his mind carried away by the waves. and that's when he saw you, like a dream. as pretty as a mermaid, your soft face so serene.. he was so jealous of you. you were approaching the serenity he so desperately sought, and it upset him. but that didn't stop him from continuing to look at you with curious doe eyes, as if you weren't capable of feeling a insistent gaze burn your skin. he suspected you must be around his age, because of your youthful facial features glistening in the sunlight. as he watched you without saying a word, without moving an inch, his heart fluttering with lightness at the mere sight of your devastating but peaceful smile. you seemed so far out in the ocean — that intrigued him and led him to appreciate a little more the benefits of the sea. you intrigued him.
so.. to say that he approached you by pure coincidence would be a lie, because when he recognized you, wandering the halls of his high school, he wondered why he'd never noticed you before. with hindsight and a bit of imagination, it was probably because your mind was always stuck in the middle of the ocean and no boat had ever managed to reach your soul — until he decided he was going to make it, even if he had to swim for it. which he did, with flying colors.
« you're okay? » he asked, softly, in a voice that sounded like a siren call to your ears. falling for kim gyuvin was, once upon a time, something inconceivable for you. your head was too much in the clouds, your mind too much in your dreams, and your heart far too rambunctious to consider loving anyone other than the ocean. but he managed to get you to change tack — him and his beautiful sun-kissed brown eyes. shaking your head negatively with a barely visible smile that only he could see, you finally looked away to the horizon, where the entrance to the beach wasn't far off. « we're here. » you announced, tugging a little more firmly on his hand to guide his steps, despite the fact that he knew this road by heart, having travelled it with you so many times.
as you carefully descended the stairs to the beach, the fresh ocean breeze was already tickling your fragile skin. gyuvin was careful not to let go of your hand to prevent you from falling, but this impulse of benevolence caused him to miss the moment when you stopped dead in your tracks to observe the landscape in front of you, his body colliding with yours. « oh.. » was the only thing he was able to say when his chest hit your back, and the next second his gaze was unconsciously fixed on your face, which, once again, seemed so tranquil at the mere sight of waves washing up on the sand eternally. a smile tugged at his lips, his free hand slipping to your hip to hold you close, and his heart racing at the simple knowledge that you were perfectly fine right now. « it's pretty, isn't it? » you finally commented, your words mixing with the wind to reach his ears, and gyuvin nodded positively, his loving gaze lost in the ocean of your eyes.
advancing through the sand, taking care to draw him along with you, you didn't give him time to dream about whether you could be his little mermaid, the one who could save from drowning the prince he could have been. the same one you might abandon on the beach, as you did previously with the fifteen-year-old boy who first saw you a few years earlier. gyuvin liked to think your story would be so pretty to tell — he was one hundred percent sure it would be his little sisters' favorite love story, the one that would make them dream by night and hope by day. yeah, gyuvin was convinced that your love story would inspire many.
now sitting next to each other on the warm sand, gyuvin's fingers quietly played with a lock of your hair, twirling it around his finger, with his tender, benevolent gaze fixed on you. his heart seemed filled with happiness, because he knew that there, right now, right here, sitting in front of that vast blue sea, your heart was soothed, at the height of the happiness you so preciously cherished. and he was perfectly right : sitting on the sand, you held your knees to your chest, your star-filled eyes exploring the ocean you seemed to know by heart. the beauty of the light reflected on the surface of the water, the waves breaking against the shiny sand of the beach, the sound of the latter disturbing the tranquillity of the place, with only a few people strolling by, each looking happier than the next. not far away, a little girl running with her feet in the water, followed by a little boy who seemed to be laughing out loud as he tried to catch up with her. the sun seemed to embrace their skin with its warmth, under the watchful eyes of their parents who were standing not far from them, a light, benevolent smile decorating their faces.
then, as you watched them tenderly, your thoughts suddenly began to wander, taking you to the back of your mind that never stopped thinking. after careful consideration, you began to think that maybe, just maybe, you didn't have to make weekly trips to the beach. because you'd found another way to feel good and happy when the world seemed to be crashing down on you.
looking away from the blue expanse in front of you, your pupils finally meet those of gyuvin. your boyfriend offers you a pretty smile — light, but filled with all the sincerity in the world, his eyes overflowing with love. in your chest, your heart began to race, furiously, warmly, pleasantly, like the first time you fell in love with the sea. gyuvin's love was as deep as the ocean, his hands as soft as water, his eyes as radiant as the sun reflecting on the surface. he'd come into your life by chance, and had been making you want to drown in his arms ever since. he cracked the shell of your heart and slipped inside and never left. and now, he brings you the same warmth and comfort as an afternoon spent observing the ocean. it was strange, a new feeling for you — in your whole life, no one has ever been able to fill the void inside you, to calm the storm that was sometimes your mind, when, with just one little smile, gyuvin made you forget all the ills of your life, as the sea was so adept at doing it. so maybe now, kim gyuvin was the ocean's main rival in your heart.
hooking your hands around his arm, you drew him gently towards you, feeling a certain shyness rise up in you after having spent long seconds staring at him without saying anything. laying your head against his shoulder, feeling the warmth of his skin against your cheek, his hand slips against one of yours, gently caressing your fingers. « i don't think i need to come here so often anymore. » you say suddenly, attracting the attention of the boy at your side, who raises an eyebrow at you. he wasn't used to seeing you refuse a trip to the seaside, especially knowing perfectly well your love for this beach so dear to your heart. so it was only natural for him to ask you why or how you'd come to think such a thing, his little why floating in the air for a moment without any answer escaping your lips.
tightening your grip around his arm, closing your eyes as the ocean breeze hits your face, a perfectly relaxed smile, the most sincere he'd ever seen, took place on your lips. « i found someone better than the ocean. » you replied, so naturally that gyuvin felt the tips of his ears redden furiously. he wasn't stupid — he knew, he understood that silently, and in your own way, you had just confessed to him that he was like the ocean in your heart. and for him, those words were more powerful than a simple i love you.
gyuvin knew that nothing meant more to you than the sound of the waves and the beauty of the ocean's expanse, which you cherished more than anything else. so, the mere thought of him being superior to the sea in your heart could only make him fall even more in love with you than he already was. his rebellious teenage heart of a few years ago was definitely not wrong : you were the mermaid who kept him from drowning. without answering you orally, gyuvin decided to simply close his eyes in turn, resting his head against yours, enjoying your stroll by the sea which managed to open your heart to him.

Y'all Hyrule is BIG. Outside of fast travel with the slate or swapping horses out, it would take days to travel across the continent. Zelda isn't getting to the Spring of Wisdom in a day.
Tumblr media
Korok Forest (black line): Hyrule Castle bridge to Boneyard Bridge to Helmhead Bridge to Woodland Stable to the platform in front of the Great Deku Tree: 33 hrs 10 min
Goron City (orange line): Hyrule Castle Bridge to Orsedd Bridge to Thims Bridge to Foothill Stable to Bludo's house: 65 hrs 15 min

Spring of Courage (green line):  Hyrule Castle Bridge to Sacred Ground Ruins to Gatepost Town Ruins to Bridge of Hylia to Faron Woods to Zonai Ruins to platform in front of the goddess statue in the Spring of Courage: 44 hrs 30 min
Gerudo Town (yellow line): Hyrule Castle Bridge to Giant's Forest (pretty much straight south, then turned west at the Great Plateau) to Digdogg Suspension Bridge to Gerudo Town: 74 hrs 5 min
Rito Village (brown line): Hyrule Castle Bridge to Carok Bridge to Tabantha Great Bridge to the arch guarded by Mazli at the base of the stairs into Rito Village: 63 hrs 15 min
Royal Ancient Lab Ruins (gray line): Hyrule Castle Bridge to Carok Bridge to Royal Ancient Lab Ruins: 20 hrs 50 min
*these routes follow the shortest/most direct roads, doesn't go cross country unless it's unavoidable (like when approaching the springs) or unless it looks like a road was there pre-Calamity (like the Sahasra Slope); the exception is the Spring of Courage, where I didn't see any obvious route; I'm guessing they either did some climbing and cross country hiking, or rafted up the Dracozu River
*this is the slowest walking speed I could get - any slower and Link stopped moving, but I think it's still faster than the walking speed shown in the memories, especially #3 (Resolve and Grief) - pushing the left stick all the way forward results in what looks like jogging, not walking
*this doesn't include time for sheltering from inclement weather, sleep, making/breaking camp, rest/meal breaks, monster attacks, walking slower due to changes in elevation (the hike to Goron City has to be brutal) - it's literally a walking pace straight through

Day 6 prompt of @monthly-challenge's Spring Fling: Rainbow! I have a little ficlet from my Fantasy Adventures With Waffles character for y'all here!
It had been raining for a few days now. Technically, Trey was used to it— living in the jungle meant rain was pretty common. But usually, the rain had to make its way through the heavy canopy of branches and leaves, which meant it was a little lighter. Out on the river, however, it was a thick drizzle that didn’t seem to want to let up.
Adelis stoically tolerated it, and Trey did his best not to complain. Even Colin seemed more downcast than usual, despite being a selkie who was used to getting wet. But they had to keep moving, and keep moving they did.
On the fourth day, however, the rain started to slow. By noon, the relentless pattering had stopped, and Trey couldn’t help but breath a sigh of relief.
Poking his head out from the shelter where he’d been hiding, Colin sniffed the air. “Hmm. Rain’s over? About blasted time.”
Adelis chuckled, pushing back her cloak hood. “Agreed. Hopefully we’ll have clear skies before long.”
Sure enough, it wasn’t a full hour before the clouds parted, revealing a vibrant blue sky beneath. Underneath the shine of the sun, the grassy banks on either side of them seemed to glow with lush, rich new life. The air was cool and fresh, and Trey took a deep, grateful breath.
Emerging from the shelter, Colin dropped down and settled on the side of the raft, dunking his feet into the river. Letting out a long sigh of satisfaction, he tilted his face back to catch a ray of sun. “That’s much better. Ooh! Rainbow!”
Trey followed his pointing hand, and caught sight of the long, narrow arc shimmering against the sky. The misty colors hung in the air, bright and beautiful after days of gray. “Wow. That’s beautiful.”
“It is,” Adelis agreed. “Colin, isn’t there a selkie legend about rainbows?”
Scratching his chin in thought, Colin let out a hum. “Yeah, I think so. They’re supposed to represent some kind of promise, of protection and faithfulness and new life. I don’t remember the story, exactly. Something about a lot of rain?”
“Let’s hope it means it won’t be raining for a while,” Trey said, and Adelis laughed.
“Agreed. Trey, come up here and help me with this map? We need to study our route.”
Trey hopped to his feet and headed over to her. Behind him, the rainbow hung for a while longer, glowing softly against the sky. Then, it faded away.

The Siege of Xuyi (451)
[Excerpt from WS074]
The barbarians launched an invasion into Xu and Yu. Tuoba Tao (408-452) led a mighty force of hundreds of thousands toward Pengcheng. Zang Zhi (400-454) was appointed General who Assists the State and Bearer of the Seal, with authority to appoint his deputies. Leading a contingent of ten thousand men, Zhi marched north to intercept the invaders. By the time he reached Xuyi, Tao had already crossed the Huai River. Hu Chongzhi, Chief Officer of the Palace Guards, was appointed marshal of Zhi’s headquarters. Mao Xizuo, the Crown Prince’s General of the Massed Crossbows and Chongzhi’s deputy, also received orders from Zhi. A high mountain stood east of Xuyi city, and fearing the barbarians would seize this strategic point, Zhi ordered Chongzhi and his forces to fortify the mountain while he established his own camp south of the city.
The barbarians soon launched an assault on Chongzhi and Chengzhi's camps. Despite their valiant resistance, Chongzhi and his men were overwhelmed, their forces scattered, and Chongzhi himself was killed. The barbarians then turned on Xizuo. Commanding elite troops from the northern quarters, Xizuo fought fiercely, while Banner Leader Li Guan rallied the soldiers, cutting down many enemies. Squad Leader Zhou Yinzhi and External Supervisor Yang Fangsheng led archers in a coordinated counterattack. As the enemy prepared to retreat, Xizuo was mortally wounded, causing his forces to fall into disarray. Zang Zhi, hesitant to engage in a rescue, allowed both camps to collapse, sealing the fate of his own forces.
[A short introduction of Chongzhi, Chengzhi and Xizuo.]
After the defeat of the three camps, Zhi's forces fled under the cover of night, abandoning their heavy equipment and armor. Only seven hundred men managed to retreat to Xuyi. Administrator Shen Pu had already fortified the city with three thousand well-prepared soldiers, a sight that greatly pleased Zhi, and together they mounted a defense. The barbarians, having marched south and now low on supplies, had been relying on local resources. After crossing the Huai River, they consumed the grain stored at the Pingyue and Shibie garrisons. However, both their men and horses were now starving and exhausted. Upon hearing that Xuyi had stored grain, they targeted the city as a critical supply point for their return north. Despite their victory over Chongzhi, their initial attack on the city failed due to its robust defenses. Frustrated, they moved further south.
In the early first month of the twenty-eighth year [of Yuanjia] (February 17 to March 17, 451), Tao launched a full-scale assault on Xuyi after returning north from Guangling. Tao demanded wine from Zhi, who sent him urine instead. Enraged, Tao ordered the construction of a siege wall overnight, opening an attack route towards the city's northeast. Using soil and stones from the eastern mountain, his forces filled in the path. Concerned that the defenders might escape via the waterways, the barbarians brought large ships and constructed a floating bridge at Mount Jun, effectively blocking the Huai River. In response, the defenders launched a counterattack from their ships, achieving a decisive victory. However, the following morning, the invaders returned, using square boats as rafts, each one protected by soldiers. Although the defenders attacked again, they were unable to stop the invaders from establishing the raft at Mount Jun, successfully cutting off both land and water routes.
Tao wrote to Zhi:
"The soldiers I’ve sent to fight are not from our own people. The northeast of the city is held by Dingling and Hu, while the south by the Di and Qiang from the Three Qin region. If the Dingling die, it will reduce the bandits in Changshan and Zhao Commandery; if the Hu die, it will reduce the bandits of Bing Province; and if the Di and Qiang die, it will reduce the bandits within the Passes. Should you kill the Dingling and Hu, it will only bring us advantage."
Zhi replied:
"I have read your letter and fully grasped your treacherous intentions. You rely on your four-legged beasts and have repeatedly trespassed the borders of the state. Your offenses are too numerous to recount in detail. Wang Xuanmo retreated east, and Liang Tan scattered to the west. Have you not heard the children's song that says: ‘The enemy's horses drink from the river, and Büri (Tao’s Xianbei name) will die in the year of Mao’? Though that time has not yet arrived, the two armies are already paving the way for your horses to reach the river. This is fate at work, beyond human control. I have received the mandate to annihilate you, and the time for your defeat is set at Baideng. My army has hardly begun its march, yet you are already rushing toward death. How could I possibly let you live to enjoy the spoils at the Sanggan River?
If you attack this city, even if I cannot kill you directly, you will die because of me. Should you be fortunate, you may fall at the hands of your own chaotic troops. Should you be unfortunate, you will be captured alive, bound to a donkey, and paraded to the marketplace. I have no desire for my own survival. If heaven and earth abandon their divine spirits, and I am ultimately overpowered by you, even being ground into powder, slaughtered, and torn apart would not suffice as repayment to my homeland.
Your intellect and strength cannot surpass Fu Jian! In recent years, you have rampaged because you have not yet drunk from the river, and the year of Mao has not yet come. When Hulan made his deep incursion into Pengcheng, it rained for a few days, and not a single horse returned—do you remember? Now the spring rains have begun, and the masses are gathering. Attack the city confidently and do not retreat. If you run short of food, inform me, and I will provide provisions from the granary to sustain you.
You have sent me a sword—do you intend for me to use it upon you? How bitter it is! Let everyone strive with all their might. There is no need for further words."
At that time, there was a children's song among the barbarians that says: "The chariot comes north like a pheasant shot through, unexpectedly the barbarians’ horses drink from the river. The barbarian lord returns north to die at Shiji, the barbarians seek to cross the river but heaven will not allow it." Zang Zhi responded, quoting this rhyme, which greatly angered Tao. In his fury, Tao had an iron bed made, fitted with iron spikes, and declared that when Zhi was captured, he would be made to sit on it.
Zhi also wrote to the barbarian troops: "To the various officials and commoners among the enemy: I have received a letter from Büri, which is attached separately. We are all citizens of the same calendar. Why should you bring such disaster upon yourselves? A true man should know how to turn misfortune into blessing. Now, I am writing to you in accordance with the court's regulations, as in the separate letter, for you to ponder." At that time, there was a reward offered for Tuoba Tao's head, promising the title of Marquis of the Open Country and a fief of ten thousand households, along with ten thousand bolts of cloth and silk.
The barbarians employed hook carts to tear down the city walls, but the defenders countered by securing the carts with ropes. Hundreds of soldiers pulled against them, preventing the carts from retreating. Under the cover of night, the defenders lowered men outside the city walls using wooden barrels to sever the hooks. The next day, the barbarians deployed battering rams against the walls. However, the city’s densely packed soil proved resilient, and each strike dislodged only a few liters of earth. The barbarians then resorted to scaling the walls, engaging in close combat. They took turns, climbing, falling, and then climbing again without retreat, leading to tens of thousands of casualties. The bodies of the fallen piled up to the height of the city walls. The Prince of Gaoliang (Tuoba Na) was shot and killed.
After thirty days of siege, over half of the invaders lay dead. Upon learning that Pengcheng had cut off their retreat and that the [Song] court had dispatched a navy into the Huai River—where many of his men were succumbing to disease—Tuoba Tao lifted the siege on the second day of the second month (March 19, 451) and fled.
In recognition of Zhi's achievements, the emperor honored him with several prestigious titles: Envoy with the Imperial Seal, Champion General, Commander of the Pacification of the Barbarians, Inspector of Yongzhou, and Marquis of the Open Country, overseeing military affairs in Yong, Liang, and the northern and southern Qin provinces. He was also granted five hundred households.
The next year, Emperor Taizu launched another northern campaign, ordering Zhi to lead his forces to Tong Pass. However, Zhi delayed, stationing his troops near the outskirts of the city and sending only Marshal Liu Yuanjing to garrison the border. His reluctance to advance on time stemmed from his longing for a favorite concubine. He abandoned the camp and returned to the city alone on horseback. Furthermore, he spent an enormous sum—six to seven million coins—from the treasury, yet the authorities chose not to hold him accountable.

Rapids Classification
Tumblr media
How To Choose The Perfect Rapids For Your Skill Level
The International Scale of River Difficulty (ISRD) rates Class I through VI rapids. Class III rapids are suitable for intermediates with some experience in white water rafting.
To have a good time while whitewater rafting, you must choose rapids matching your skill level. This means understanding how rapid classes work and knowing what to expect at each level.
Advantage Grand Canyon are experts in this field. Our guide is here to help you navigate various classes of rapids and find a suitable adventure in the Grand Canyon.
Classes of Rapids: The International Scale of River Difficulty
For a rafter, each stretch of river represents varying levels of challenge depending on their skills and experience. However, knowing this system ensures they select waters proportionate to their ability and safety measures throughout the journey while making it enjoyable.
Class I Rapids (Beginner)
Beginners or those who have never experienced whitewater should start with class one rivers such as the Badger Creek Rapid in the Grand Canyon.
Due to their smoothness, these rapids are very gentle and can be manipulated by anyone, even without basic skills. Hence, they offer great opportunities to appreciate scenic beauty without encountering difficulties like capsizing.
Class II Rapids (Novice)
Class II rapids might require more maneuverability but are still mild enough for novices and families looking for easy thrills. With just simple rafting skills and wearing life jackets alone, one may quickly navigate through them since they only involve minor splashing, which makes one feel less crowded. Thus, they are ideal places for kids accompanied by families.
Temperatures can be controlled during early spring or summer when sea levels rise. House Rock Rapid is one of the top Class II rapids with small waves and minor obstacles, providing more excitement while still being accessible for less experienced rafters.
Class III Rapids (Intermediate)
Class III Rapids offer moderate waves requiring maneuvering through narrow passages during Dead River trips, where helmets must be worn due to some moderately steep drops and small waves that demand teamwork and quick thinking, leading to fun challenges.
The turbulent drops of the Dead River and the dynamic current in Kennebec’s Penobscot River, which can be described as the fast river flow of Class III rapids, still offer its riders quite a challenge. More physical strength and thrilling emotions can be achieved when you choose rafting trips in adventure sports where people are involved in rafts and pass through different rapid river turns.
If you want to have a lot of fun and be tired while rowing on Class III rapids, then this is what you need. Select the right difficulty level for yourself, take all necessary measures before starting your journey, and rest assured that it will be one excellent whitewater rafting experience.
Hance Rapid is another great intermediate rapid with chaotic waves and tight spaces. It provides a moderate test requiring adept maneuvering skills; intermediate paddlers looking for excitement should consider Granite Rapid.
Class IV Rapids (Advanced)
Class IV rapids are suitable for advanced and intermediate rafters. The river has high power but predictability regarding wave sizes, thus demanding more accurate boat handling techniques than any other category. Large yet unproven waves require narrow passes, so quick moves must be made by experienced guides who can recognize them easily. Otherwise, damages may occur since rescue becomes extremely difficult due to the conditions presented here.
For intermediate rafters, these advanced rapids are exciting because they push their abilities without being too dangerous like expert-level rapids would do; strong currents coupled with powerful waves occasionally dropping down call for confident spokesmanship as well precise steering ability from behind paddles that, even though not extreme compared with class five require good familiarity with white-water courses together fast reflexes if one wants negotiate safely through complex choppy sections which characterize these parts most liked by those having some knowledge about this sport but not enough experience.
Lava Falls and Hermit Rapid in the Grand Canyon provide perfect challenges for skilled kayakers who enjoy steep gradients combined with large waves and turbulence.
Class V Rapids (Expert)
Class V rapids are long, violent, known as challenging rapids, and have hard-to-maneuver features. They represent the ultimate challenge in whitewater rafting. Highly turbulent waters, large and irregular waves, powerful and unpredictable currents, and steep drops over rocks are just a few characteristics that make Class V rapids so dangerous.
To paddle through Class V rapids, one needs to be skilled at paddling, have quick reflexes, and be able to make decisions under pressure. Only those experienced enough should attempt paddling through them because they can easily get injured or their boat may capsize if they do not wear the right gear to protect against such risks.
This is why we at Advantage Grand Canyon recommend only trained experts to undertake this activity, as it requires more demanding fitness levels along longer routes than any other category does; however, most people prefer taking up courses where necessary skills like appropriate equipment knowledge as well rescue techniques would greatly help ensure safety while attempting various challenging parts found within higher sections meant for expert-level rafters.
Crystal Rapid is one of the most complex and dangerous rapids on the Colorado River in Grand Canyon National Park. It is a class five rapid, which means that you must have advanced paddling skills to navigate down this section successfully. Otherwise, things might turn out differently from what had been planned since several huge waves could quickly sweep away even an experienced rafter like yourself.
Class VI Rapids (Extreme)
Whitewater rapids are classified from class I to class VI. Class VI rapids are the most complex and dangerous rapids to be attempted in a raft. They are considered almost impossible to navigate because they are unpredictable and have many hazards.
These kinds of rapids have big and standing waves created by powerful currents and often steep drops – sometimes over rocks or other obstacles like undercurrents which may flip rafts or suck them underwater for long periods. Rafters need extensive experience before attempting this level; depending on the conditions, it may still be too risky.
In rapid classification, classifying one as class six means it is highly hazardous and usually does not run during normal circumstances, requiring extraordinary expertise, precise steering, and carefulness. Most experts agree that professionals who have mastered all aspects of river running safety skills should only attempt anything higher than Class V, including rescue techniques.
Choosing The Right Whitewater Rafting Adventure
Several considerations besides whitewater classification should be made before selecting a whitewater rafting adventure to ensure your safety and enjoyment throughout the rafting trip. First, evaluate your experience level; beginners should start on manageable sections with gentle currents where they can learn basic paddling strokes without much risk.
Class I and II rapids provide an environment suitable for families with young children or people who wish to relax while being introduced to this sport. Secondarily, if you are looking forward to more thrilling experiences, go for those rivers with moderate complexity levels, such as III, which require advanced skills like reading water correctly, among others.
If you’re an intermediate rafter interested in testing yourself against serious rapids, then Class IV should be right up your alley. Such rivers demand strong paddle work combined with fast reflexes since you will encounter turbulent stretches where navigation becomes tricky due to numerous obstacles like holes and rocks.
Honesty is vital when choosing the appropriate rafting trip for yourself or your group.
Grade IV represents a substantial step up from many different classes in terms of difficulty, so one should have adequate skills before attempting such sections. If you are unsure about your capability, go for less challenging whitewater that matches your abilities. Otherwise, there might arise a need for rescue operations, which could put others at risk, too.
Location and scenery are other critical factors in choosing the proper whitewater rafting adventure. For example, different rivers offer landscapes ranging from lush forests to scenic canyons or even rugged mountains; therefore, researching different destinations will help you find a place that satisfies the desire for natural beauty and the thrill-seeking spirit within.
Final Words
In conclusion, choosing the proper whitewater rafting adventure involves carefully assessing your skill level, desired location, river trip length, and needed guidance. Considering these factors and the rapid classification from above, you can select a rafting experience that matches your abilities and preferences, ensuring a thrilling and safe adventure on the water.

Rising Waters, Rising Spirits: America's Flood Resilience Unveiled
Tumblr media
In the heart of America's heartland, a battle against nature's fury unfolds. As relentless rains pound the Midwest, rivers swell beyond their banks, transforming peaceful communities into waterlogged war zones. But amidst the chaos, a story of human resilience emerges, one that captures the indomitable spirit of those facing the flood's wrath. The Mississippi River, once a lifeline for commerce and travel, now threatens the very towns it helped build. In Iowa, sandbag walls rise like modern fortifications, with neighbors working shoulder to shoulder to protect their homes. The scene is both heartbreaking and inspiring – a testament to the power of community in the face of adversity. Further south, in Missouri, entire neighborhoods have become impromptu islands. Residents navigate flooded streets in kayaks and makeshift rafts, their determination evident in every paddle stroke. Local authorities work tirelessly, coordinating evacuations and ensuring the safety of those most vulnerable. But it's not just about survival; it's about adaptation. Farmers in the region, faced with submerged fields, are already planning for the future. They speak of resilient crops and innovative drainage systems, their voices filled with hope rather than despair. The flood's impact extends beyond the immediate disaster zone. Supply chains across the nation feel the ripple effects as vital transportation routes are disrupted. Yet, in true American fashion, businesses large and small are finding creative solutions, rerouting shipments and collaborating in unprecedented ways. As the waters begin to recede, the focus shifts to recovery. FEMA teams descend on affected areas, armed with digital tools to assess damage and streamline aid distribution. Their efforts are bolstered by an army of volunteers, many traveling from across the country to lend a hand. The road to recovery will be long, but the spirit of those affected remains unbroken. In town halls and community centers, plans for rebuilding are already taking shape. There's talk of improved flood defenses, smarter urban planning, and a renewed commitment to environmental stewardship. This flood is more than a natural disaster; it's a reminder of our collective strength and the power of human compassion. As one local resident put it, "The water may have taken our homes, but it can't take our hope." What are Aiden & Evie's favourite places and/or slides at a waterpark?
Do they love the really fun and thrilling waterslides? Or do they like the more chill ones that go slow?
In response to your summer/beach/pool thingy for them <333
Their shared favorite is probably the lazy river/roundabout route. They also love raft rides, water roller coasters, and wave pools.
In fact, there's even this wave pool game Michael came up with that he introduces them to. It involves somewhat re-enacting the scene from the Little Mermaid where Ariel saves Eric. One person pretends to be Ariel and has to make it across the wave pool and back to "save" Eric.
Evie and Aiden like the game, but they always get stuck on who should be who. Evie fits Ariel in heroically rescuing her lover from danger, but Aiden fits Ariel in being a beautiful mermaid with ethereal tunes.
Aiden doesn't care for waterslides quite as much. At least, not the typical ones. He tends to find the raft rides and water roller coasters more interesting. Evie enjoys the waterslides, but she does agree that the raft rides are more fun.
If he had to choose, I think Aiden would be more of a fan of the chill and slow waterslides when it comes to typical waterslides. Evie likes both the fast/thrilling and the slow/chill, but when she was younger, she'd always go on the faster ones because they were closed tube. The open tube ones looked scary to her and she was worried about accidentally falling out, even though they were slower.
[Ask me summer/beach/pool themed Evie x Aiden asks!]
