Phew. This one took, uh… a bit longer than expected due to other projects both irl and art-wise, but it’s finally here. The long-awaited domestic animal infographic! Unfortunately, I didn’t have enough space to cover every single domestic animal (I’m so sorry, reindeer and koi, my beloveds) but I tried to include as many of the “major ones” as possible.
I made this chart in response to a lot of the misunderstandings I hear concerning domestic animals, so I hope it’s helpful!
Further information I didn’t have any room to add or expand on:
🐈 “Breed” and “species” are not synonyms! Breeds are specific to domesticated animals. A Bengal Tiger is a species of tiger. A Siamese is a breed of domestic cat.
🐀 Different colors are also not what makes a breed. A breed is determined by having genetics that are unique to that breed. So a “bluenose pitbull” is not a different breed from a “rednose pitbull”, but an American Pitbull Terrier is a different breed from an American Bully! Animals that have been domesticated for longer tend to have more seperate breeds as these differing genetics have had time to develop.
🐕 It takes hundreds of generations for an animal to become domesticated. While the “domesticated fox experiment” had interesting results, there were not enough generations involved for the foxes to become truly domesticated and their differences from wild foxes were more due to epigenetics (heritable traits that do not change the DNA sequence but rather activate or deactivate parts of it; owed to the specific circumstances of its parents’ behavior and environment.)
🐎 Wild animals that are raised in human care are not domesticated, but they can be considered “tamed.” This means that they still have all their wild instincts, but are less inclined to attack or be frightened of humans. A wild animal that lives in the wild but near human settlements and is less afraid of humans is considered “habituated.” Tamed and habituated animals are not any less dangerous than wild animals, and should still be treated with the same respect. Foxes, otters, raccoons, servals, caracals, bush babies, opossums, owls, monkeys, alligators, and other wild animals can be tamed or habituated, but they have not undergone hundreds of generations of domestication, so they are not domesticated animals.
🐄 Also, as seen above, these animals have all been domesticated for a reason, be it food, transport, pest control, or otherwise, at a time when less practical options existed. There is no benefit to domesticating other species in the modern day, so if you’ve got a hankering for keeping a wild animal as a pet, instead try to find the domestic equivalent of that wild animal! There are several dog breeds that look and behave like wolves or foxes, pigeons and chickens can make great pet birds and have hundreds of colorful fancy breeds, rats can be just as intelligent and social as a small monkey (and less expensive and dangerous to boot,) and ferrets are pretty darn close to minks and otters! There’s no need to keep a wolf in a house when our ancestors have already spent 20,000+ years to make them house-compatible.
🐖 This was stated in the infographic, but I feel like I must again reiterate that domestic animals do not belong in the wild, and often become invasive when feral. Their genetics have been specifically altered in such a way that they depend on humans for optimal health. We are their habitat. This is why you only really see feral pigeons in cities, and feral cats around settlements. They are specifically adapted to live with humans, so they stay even when unwanted. However, this does not mean they should live in a way that doesn’t put their health and comfort as a top priority! If we are their world, it is our duty to make it as good as possible. Please research any pet you get before bringing them home!

Yeah,, I've been hyperfixating on @rhapsoddity Vigilante Sheriff AU and obviously Spectrum. This specifically is from this template from Rhaps.
Oh yeah, and I also wrote 1600 words of a oneshot to go along with this,, just a little self-indulgent fun. Content Warning for mindcontrol and hypnosis-
Slipping away was easy when it came to being one of Spectrum’s “llamas”. Really, there were so many of them, some conscious, some not, that you could slip through the cracks for a few minutes and be back before either Owenge or Spectrum himself noticed. It made undercover work much easier.
Berry hadn’t wanted to end hero work when his identity had been outed, but shrinking powers wasn’t very useful outside of reconnaissance and undercover and the Empire’s Watcher tower had no more use for someone that couldn’t hide in plain sight. They finally relented in giving him one more job: undercover as one of Spectrum’s llamas.
As a volunteer llama, he could get away with wearing a mask to cover his identity. So, with a bit of purple hair dye, his rabbit ears pinned back (and the llama-ear headband helped with that) and the purple monochrome poncho, he was unrecognizable and indistinguishable from the other llamas.
It hadn’t taken much to convince Owenge that he wanted to join the team and he was given a time and place to meet and then put to work immediately. Turns out being a llama was a lot of cleaning out abandoned warehouses for Spectrum to use as temporary bases and occasionally standing in the way of any hero or vigilante that tried to get by. He wasn’t even expected to fight all that much, or atleast, no one ever got in trouble for not holding off anyone with powers.
While the work itself wasn’t hard, being in the presence of Spectrum was. The man was constantly flinging his powers around, readjusting the hypnotism on some of the less willing llamas or simply color swatching new looks for his base. It gave him headaches if he looked too long. Not to mention, Spectrum, in his great opinion, was a bit of a selfish brat. From what Berry could tell he did everything for the sake of easing his own unending boredom, including destroying several people’s lives.
Berry had pushed himself behind a pile of crates now, writing down the names of several civilians that were currently being fitted for llama ponchos. Spectrum had some plans (ones he wasn’t yetprivy to) and needed more fodder to go through with it. This meant more hypnotized victims. Berry would be sending the list of names to the Watcher Tower by the end of the day, at the very least their families would know where they were.
“Well, hello there. What are you doing?” Owenge asked, head poking into Berry’s hiding spot with a raised eyebrow.
Berry jumped, quickly hiding the journal behind his back, “Oh! Owenge, sir! Hey, sorry, I was just- Uh… Writing in my diary?”
Owenge hummed and grabbed his arm, pulling him out from behind the crates. He didn’t ease his grip as he held out his hand, “Give. Now.”
“It’s my diary,” Berry tried again, feeling dread overtake him. He couldn’t hand over the journal, it had everything he learned about Spectrum practically spelled out in big letters. His cover would be blown.
His cover had been blown.
“Right. Don’t believe you,” Owenge said with a grin, yanking Berry closer. He reached around and pulled the journal from his hand himself. “If it is, you have nothing to worry about. Unless you’ve been writing nasty things about me that is.”
“Please, Owenge, sir, just let me-”
Owenge shoved him against the wall and began flipping through it. He paused occasionally at certain pages, nodded to himself, and then snapped it closed. The journal was slipped it into his pocket and he readjusted to a bruising grip on Berry's arm. “Right. I’ve seen enough. Let’s see Spectrum, shall we? He’s gonna have just a small chat with you.”
Berry gulped. He knew what would happen next. Spectrum would just wave a hand and he’d become another mindless llama; one they would be keeping a close eye on. Best thing to do now was cut his loses and run.
He activated his powers, shrinking right out of Owenge’s grip.
Owenge yelped in surprise as Berry hit the ground running, darting for the exit. “Spectrum! We got a problem!” he called out, taking chase after his diminished form.
Berry had to grow back to full height to be able to outrun Owenge; and he nearly got about halfway to the doors. Then he was stopped in his tracks when two other llamas barrelled into him, close to knocking him off his feet as they grabbed a hold of him. He tried one more time to shrink away, but their grips just tightened around his arms as his feet left the floor and, by the time he was nearly two feet tall, one of them was reaching to grab him around the middle. He quickly grew back up in size to avoid being grabbed like a doll.
“Well. Well. Well,” Spectrum spoke up from behind them, boot heels clicking on the concrete. The llamas holding him were stiff and unyielding with Spectrum so close, so both were likely hypnotized victims. They would be easy to get away from if he were willing to hurt them. (Berry really wasn't willing to hurt anyone at the moment.)
The colorful villain stepped in front of him, a playful smirk over his face. Most other villains likely would have been furious at the realization a spy was amongst them; Spectrum just found it amusing. This was probably the most exciting thing that’s happened today for him. “Looks like we have a runner. I don’t remember, are you someone I recruited or Owen?” He punctuated the statement by turning the surrounding area a swirl of colors.
Owenge caught up with them, pulling Berry’s journal out of his pocket and handing it over to Spectrum. “They came to me, said they wanted some extra cash and some fun. Seemed legit. Till I found them just now with this.”
Spectrum glanced through the journal, pouting as he did, “You’ve been naughty, haven’t you? Some of the things you’ve written down... No wonder the Heroes have been on my tail more than usual. We’ll really have to put an end to all this journaling.”
Berry figured this was his last chance and tried again to shrink out of the llamas’ grip, yanking with all his might. The llamas held fast and the colors around him increased in intensity. There was a sudden sharp pain in his head, slowly dulling to a low throbbing. Made it hard to think.
“Oh, none of that,” Spectrum cooed, hand cupping his cheek. Berry took deep breaths as he returned to his proper height, trying not to show how much he was shaking. “Fun powers you have there. Familiar too. Wasn’t there a disgraced hero with the same ones?”
He didn’t answer, just pulling his head away from Spectrum. His eyes darted around for an escape. There was nothing but swirling colors and Spectrum in his vision now. The warehouse was gone from sight.
Spectrum reached forward and pushed off the llama headband and pulled the black mask off his face. “There we go, just as I thought. You're Rabbit Redux, how cute. Y’know..." He paused, one hand slipping under an ear and rubbing at the fur, "-I always wanted a pet bunny.”
Berry’s eyes widened, “No. No. Wait a second.”
Spectrum shushed him, his other hand resting along his neck. Colors swirled- brighter, faster. His vision was fuzzy with them. He could feel his body relaxing against his will. “There we go. Relax. It’ll be so much easier to just give in.”
His breathing even out slowly. His flinching form slowly slumping to something more relaxed. His rabbit ears straightened out to their natural upright position. His thoughts filtered out bit by bit.
Eventually the colors eased up, the warehouse coming back. Spectrum waved off the llamas holding him and Owenge led them away to complete some jobs until later tonight when they’d actually come into play.
“Now, what to do with you, bunny,” Spectrum hummed with contemplation. He grabbed Berry’s hand, pulling him along, further into the warehouse, “Let’s start with a new outfit, something a bit more appropriate for a little doll.”
₍⑅ᐢ..ᐢ₎ ₍⑅ᐢ..ᐢ₎ ₍⑅ᐢ..ᐢ₎
Scott hummed to himself as he clipped the berets into Berry’s hair. Turns out the rabbit hybrid’s hair was stick-straight without product, but Scott could handle that easily. He certainly didn't mind spending a few extra minutes in the morning curling his hair. It wasn't much more time than what he was spending dollying Berry up with soft makeup.
Berry was a cute little doll for Scott, and once he was under the hypnosis he was easy to keep under. Some people would slip in and out and overall be a constant annoyance for him, but Berry was so easy he barely needed any influence.
Scott pulled him out of the bathroom and walked around him, taking in the cute little outfit he decided for the bunny hybrid today: a soft lavender turtleneck sweater and light blue overall shorts, lavender striped thigh-highs and rabbit themed sneakers. He was precious! Scott booped Berry’s nose, watching his eyes flutter but otherwise not react.
“Perfect,” Scott sighed and waved a hand, a soft array of colors swirling around Berry’s head, “Now shrink down, Berry, like a good little rabbit.”
Berry swayed for a second before his height reduced. In seconds he was standing at just a foot tall. Scott was quick to pick him up, tucking him into his arms like one would hold an actual rabbit. He stroked the fluffy ears unabashedly.
“Such a sweet bunny, come on, we have a fun day planned ahead,” Scott cooed.
He loved carting Berry along place to place like this, or tucked inside a bag like a quaint little purse dog. His own personal hero turned dress up doll.
A little pet rabbit, just for him.
