○ unfortunately, like many immigrant families, castillo's family came to the states with hardly anything and had to work themselves up from zero. his father found work in agriculture while his mother began a business with her impeccable sewing skills. from a young age, all of the aargón children (two more had come five years after their move) were pressured to study hard as their parents wanted nothing more than them to never know the struggles of not knowing if they could afford to live.

○ though the struggles of poverty were always prominent in his childhood, cas has nothing but happy memories of those years. he could never thank his parents enough for shielding his and his sibling's young minds from the stresses they went through after their lights went off at night. it's something he's tried to keep in his own journey of fatherhood.

○ in the summer of '89, the aargóns moved to aspen creek, north carolina when his father was offered an amazing opportunity to become the overseer of a prominent family's farmland. it was more money than any of them had ever seen or could even dream about, and camilo knew he would have been a fool not to take it. cas took to the move pretty well, even if he had the usual confusion of pronouncing his name or sticking up for his mother when her english wasn't to someone's standards.

○ speaking of 'sticking up for': younger cas was a bit of a rougher character. he was scrappy, unserious, always willing to cause trouble, and ready with a slick pick-up line whenever a pretty girl crossed his path. teachers never minded his fooling around because he was an amazing student (going on to become valedictorian when he graduated) still, he was absolutely told off once or twice a month for being disruptive.

○ cas was voted 'biggest flirt' for his senior superlative.

○*part of a wanted connection/plot* when he was a sophomore in high school, cas fell for a pretty freshman. she was from old money, a challenge for the young boy. however, they were soon in a 'forbidden' puppy love by the end of the school year. her parents weren't too keen on their daughter dating a boy prone to getting into brawls and who snuck into underground clubs underage. it didn't matter he was set to graduate college early due to him taking undergraduate classes in high school. his rough edges were too much for the family. but that didn't stop them. it never does. when cas was (17-20), his girlfriend found out she was pregnant. cas did what many young boys do in that situation: freak the hell out. he was a selfish kid and was only thinking about himself and his wants, so he withdrew from both the relationship with his first love and the relationship with his child.

○ at seventeen, cas' brother cam was falsely accused of selling narcotics when he and a friend were pulled over (the friend's jacket being left in the car and his stash falling out onto the floor). it was months of hell for the aargóns but their one bright light was cam's defense attorney. he fought endlessly to uncover the truth. in the end, cam was acquitted of all charges and cas was left inspired for the rest of his life: he wanted to help the countless people who were just like cam and needed just that one person who believed in them.

○ *part of a wanted connection/plot* in undergrad, cas had a very close male friend. very close. he was the reason cas realized he was, in fact, bi and didn't just think guys were objectively attractive. worrying that any future employers would find out, he bowed out of the platonic and romantic relationship. he wonders what happened to him all these years later.

○ when he met iris during his first year of grad school, he knew she was the one who was going to make him settle down. he fell in a love he couldn't describe with words. she was perfect. they were engaged within a year of dating and she fell pregnant months after. they welcomed their son five months after marriage and their daughter a year later: only mere weeks after he became a partner at his firm.

○ life was seemingly picture-perfect for the new sect of the aargóns for years. yes, cas' relationship with his first child had become non-existent but otherwise, he got everything he wanted.

Oh my god I want a directors commentary on everything you've ever written lol but maybe something from making an agent or the lawyer and the piano bar?

Making An Agent

What made me want to write this?

I think I mentioned in the author's notes that I got the idea for this series from a very similar series that I wrote for back when I was in the Vin Diesel fandom. It was a really cool concept that I thought would be interesting with the characters that Raúl Esparza has on his resume. So I thought, who is the most likely to be involved in an organization like R.A.U.L? Nevada and Rafael both came to mind, but I had been writing Nevada in Cuba v DR for so long that I worried I would bring a lot of that Nevada into this story, and I wanted it to be differenr. I also wanted to play around with what I knew could be a hilarious dynamic with Rafael being pulled into this organization.

Making an Agent specifically allowed me to show Rafael becoming an actual secret agent, but also gave me a chance to flush out Headquarters, which would be a permanent fixture in the series. Making an Agent was more of a fun, laid back story that was mainly for worldbuilding and character development.

Where did I get the idea for Charlie?

I was heavily influenced by Nancy Botwin (Mary Louise Parker's character from the show, Weeds) for Charlie's personality, specifically for her humor. The rest was me wanting to give her some baggage so that her interactions with Rafael would be more interesting and there would be more potential depth for explore. Her code name is actually based on a tattoo that Nancy gets later in the series, but I had it mean something completely different for Charlie. For Nancy, it was a reminder of the first man she killed. For Charlie, however, it was a reminder that anyone can turn their life around, no matter how far gone they may seem.

I chose Mary Louise Parker as my face claim for Charlie because I thought she would look good paired with Rafael and because I hadn't seen anyone use her as a face claim for any other story.

What made me want to write this?

This story came about from me wanting to write a mlm story with Rafael but not wanting it to be a Barisi story. Don't get me wrong, I love Barisi to pieces, but I wanted to explore a gay relationship with Rafael and a character outside of the context of SVU. It all started with the banner I made with Scott Caan and Raúl Esparza. From there, I started imaging what their relationship might look like.

I knew I didn't want the story to focus too heavily on the procedural aspect of Rafael's character, though I did incorporate a subplot where Rafael asks Liv for help in trying to solve the murder of Sebastian's mom. But I wanted this story to be primarily a romance story about two men who fall in love.

Where did I get the idea for Sebastian?

Scott is very artsy in real life as far as how he dressed and some of his hobbies so I incorporated some of his personal style and his love of the arts into the character of Sebastian. I chose to make him an aspiring composer because I knew it would be a good fit for Rafael love of the theatre and because it would give me the opportunity to explore a male character who leans into his emotions, as they are essentially his bread and butter.

I wanted to create a juxtaposition between Rafael's very organized lifestyle and that of a disorganized musician. I figured they could find common ground in that they both experienced life-altering events in their childhood that heavily influenced who they became as adults.

Another fun part of dreaming up Sebastian was imagining the people in his life. I wanted to give him his own world because in many ways, he exists solely for Rafael, but I didn't want him to actually solely exist for Rafael, if that makes sense. I wanted to give him his own dreams, his own cherished relationships, especially since I plan to explore Rafael's relationship with Liv in this fic

Hey so loved your black magic series! I read your post about using REE/Rafael. I’ll read anything you write but this idea to me is RPF and kind of squicks. ☹️ Maybe if you use another character he played? Nevada?! Someone sees “Barba” doing something super bad and they’re all “omg omg” and think it’s Barba? 🤷🏻‍♀️

I hear you, I do. HOWEVER, I made a "Version" of Raul Esparza in this story that is 5 years younger, and...I hate to say it, "more" famous?

IDK I wrote a 'prototype' chapter last night, so I'm gonna put this to you. I assume/hope you're an avid reader and I can gauge the public consensus, but also I want ALL my readers to be happy!!

So here, read this and then tell me if you still find the idea "Squicky".

The way I wrote him though anon, I truly feel in my heart that it's not RPF, because like I said RPF freaks me out as well.

Before you already go in skeptical, let me set up the plot I had planned. {As told to @madamsnape921 in an IM:

the thing was gonna start that someone sees Rafael proposing to the reader, and tells a tabloid that Raul Esparza is engaged to some rando. Because they think that it was him. And then Rafa, the reader and Chloe start to discuss on how either it's a multiverse thing, or a doppelganger thing because it turns out that Rafael and Raúl are very similar, like personality traits and the Broadway dream, except that Raul's childhood was basically the opposite of Rafael's so Chloe THINKS that Raul is Rafael from a "multiverse".

Right and then Raul goes to Rafael's office to confront him and then the reader and Chloe are there to take Rafael out to lunch and they're like holy shit!

And Rafael is super uncomfortable with the idea of the reader EVER being in a show with Raul because obviously they're like the same person and Raul probably has more in common with her

Oh and also Raul is five years younger, and thinner. So then Raul's like you shouldn't listen to him, I could really help you with your career.

Annnnd that's all I have so far.

You were walking towards the exit of Central Park hand in hand with your now fiancee, when all of a sudden two giggling girls came running up to you.

“Oh my god!!!!! Raul we didn’t know you had a girlfriend!” One of them started squealing.

“Fiancee,” He corrected. “Wait I’m sorry, what? Did you just call me Raul?”

“Uh...yeah, duh,” One of the girls made a face. “Raul Esparza?”

“What?” You bursted out laughing. “I’m sorry, you think he’s Raul Esparza?”

“Um, we know he is,” The other one crossed her arms.

“Um, no he isn’t!” You wrapped your arm around Rafael protectively, as if the two girls were going to kidnap him or something.

“I can promise you ladies, I am not-- whoever you just said,” Rafael assured them.

“Why are you doing this? Are you trying not to embarrass your lady friend here?” One of the girls made a weird face at you.

“Wha? No--” Rafael tried to defend himself but the girls were already clearly ticked off.

“Wow, I have heard of actors trying to get away from fans but completely pretending to be another person, that’s pretty low Raul,” One of them glared at Rafael.

“Yeah, it wouldn’t have taken you much effort to just take a selfie with us,” The other one added with a scowl.

“I...um--” He looked to you for help, but you just shrugged. You had no idea how to handle such a weird situation.

“I guess we can take one--” He offered.

“Oh no, forget it now,” One girl scoffed.

“Yeah, jerk!” The other one stomped her foot and they both sauntered away angrily.

“...What the hell was that?” Rafael looked at you in utter confusion and disbelief, you just gave him a “wtf” smile.

“I have no idea baby--”

“Oh my god, are you guys ok?” Chloe suddenly came running up behind you. “What the hell did those teeny boppers want? To rob you with water guns or something?”

“No they-- they wanted a selfie?” Rafael was still confused, trying to figure out what just happened.

“A selfie? With you?” Chloe snorted.

“No-- With Raul Esparza,” You looked at her with a confused smile. It was pretty entertaining to think that your fiance looked like a Broadway star.

“I don’t get it, you said that I didn’t even look like him!” Rafael looked at you.

“I mean I said I didn’t see it, and that you were more handsome,”

“....Yeah well you might wanna rethink that answer babe,” Chloe’s eyes were wide as she handed you her phone. She had googled RAUL ESPARZA, and the images that popped up were-- Rafael’s face.

“Oh my God…” You whispered, showing Rafael the phone. He quickly pulled out his own and started searching for himself. You handed Chloe back her phone and did the same. Pages and pages of articles about Raul Esparza’s shows, and accelaides, and all with Rafael's face plastered all over them.

“He’s….me,” Rafael whispered in horror.

“He looks more like you than you do!” You teased, he looked at you with a very serious face. Clearly he was not ready to joke about this yet.

“Holy shit. This is some multiverse shit,” Chloe muttered as she went through her Google search.

“Excuse me?” You asked her.

“You know, the multiverse theory? There’s an infinite amount of universes in every decision anyone ever makes.”

“Meaning…?” Rafael asked.

“Isn’t it obvious?” Chloe raised an eyebrow. “Raul could be Rafael, if he hadn’t given up on his Broadway dream,”

“Oh my god,” Rafael started laughing. “Chloe, did you get loaded in the park or something?”

“Oh okay, so you have a better idea, big brain lawyer?” She crossed her arms.

“He might not, but I do,” You piped up, showing her your phone.

“Doppelgangers?” Chloe read with a face.

“Yes, it’s a fact that there are 5 people in the world with the EXACT same face,” You continued reading.

“And he just happens to live in New York, where Rafael lives? AND is on Broadway, the one thing Rafael gave up?”

“Look sure it’s a million to one shot that those events would line up, but what’s more plausible: Doppelganger or ‘Multiverse’?” You looked at Chloe, who looked at Rafael, so you turned to Rafael as well.

“...Wha--are you asking me?” He asked.

“I mean it is your face,” You shrugged. “What do you think, baby?”

“I’m leaning towards a doppelganger, sorry Chloe,” He shrugged as well.

“Yeah well, you’re probably right,” Chloe nodded as she read her own phone, still on Raul Esparza info. “Most likely because he’s five years YOUNGER than you,”

“WHAT?!” Rafael grabbed her phone; as he read it, his face fell. “Oh God, no…”

“Wha--What does it matter how old he is, Rafa?” You furrowed your brows.

“Or the fact that he’s clearly thinner and more attractive,” Chloe added with a smirk.

“CHLOE,” You scolded her. “What the ever loving fuck?”

“Well, I’m just saying-- Look at them side by side,” Chloe had a photo of Rafael from some mayor’s ball next to Raul Esparza at the Tonys, both in tuxedo’s. You wouldn’t admit to Rafael but Raul was definitely thinner, and...he looked a lot younger. It was probably Botox or something you were sure, but still….

“Okay but again WHY does it matter--?” You wanted to change the subject.

“Are you kidding me? Y/N-- This is what you want to do!” He gestured to Chloe’s phone.

“....I don’t want Raul--” You started.

“No, you want to be on Broadway though!! And, and what if someday, God forbid, you end up in a show with this guy? He clearly already has a leg up on me compatibility wise, and as Chloe so kindly pointed out, a leg up on me age and attractiveness wise, and--” Rafael started ranting and rambling, talking lightening fast, as he did when he got upset or excited.

“Whoa whoa whoa whoa, back up there counselor,” You put up a hand to his face. “Are you actually insinuating that if I worked with Raul Esparza, that I would magically fall in love with him?”

“Don’t say it like that,” Rafael was triggered by the mention of magic and love.

“Okay but I’m not even saying ‘magic’ magic, I’m just saying-- What do you think because he’s an actor, and younger than you I’m just going to think I’m better off with him? Just because he has your face?” You gave him a small “oh honey” smile as you placed your hands on either of his face.

“No, but if you have to play his love interest, and you spend every day with him, it might blur the lines--” He started grumbling.

“Rafael, baby--” You shook his head in your hands. “I am still in SCHOOL. I am nowhere NEAR being in a Broadway show as a freaking techie, let alone a love interest starring opposite Raul Esparza,”

“Yeah, I mean this guy is huge-- 3 Tonys, 2 Emmys, an Oscar--” Chloe rattled off, but stopped when she realized you were glaring at her. “What? I’m helping!”

“...See? He’s far too famous for me,” You pressed your forehead to Rafael’s.

“Right, and I’m just the lowly ADA,” He muttered.

“Lowly my ass, Rafa,” You hit him playfully. “You are the most respected ADA in all of New York,”

“I’m the only ADA of New York,” He made a face.

“Not true! Just the city,” You beamed, proud of yourself you did some research once you had gotten together.

“My point is Rafael,” You now put your hands on his collar and pulled yourself into him. “You are all the acclaim I need,” You kissed him softly. “You’re my everything, I mean for fuck’s sake you just held a one man flash mob to propose to me! Let’s Raul Esparza do THAT,” You laughed, hoping to make him feel better. As his scowl melted into a smile, you knew you had succeeded.

“That was pretty romantic wasn’t it?” He beamed, proud of himself.

“It was EPIC,” Chloe chimed in, for good this time.

“Your voice is beautiful by the way,” You had forgotten in the midst of all of the romantic hubbub to compliment him. “I’m really sorry you had to give up Broadway,”

“Yeah, well-- apparently some part of me didn’t,” He gestured to his phone.

“Well he doesn’t have me,” You pointed out.

“He doesn’t know what he’s missing.” Rafael grinned as he pulled you into a deep kiss.

“Now can we please just forget about--” You hesitated, deciding not to mention his name again. “Anything else, and just focus on our engagement night?”

“Well, I suppose--” He nodded as he put an arm around you, and the three of you continued to walk through the park.

He glanced over and picked it up, reading the notification. As he read it, his eyes widened and his face grew red. He stood up and yelled to no one in particular,

Spotify Wrapped 2019 (aka my year in music)

2019, the year I got back into musicals for real, thanks to discovering Elisabeth and Rómeó és Júlia in the spring. It’s also the year I rediscovered the music of my childhood (well, mainly the boy bands of it). Let’s see what Spotify’s statistics have to say about what music I listened to this year (and let’s see what I have to say about their statistics hahaha).

Top 5 most played artists

1. Backstreet Boys

Best boy band EVER (fight me). Their music is just so good!! Apparently I listened to them for 12 hours in total this year. I made a playlist this summer with boy bands from (mainly) the 90′s and early 00′s, that I listen to frequently. Creating the list actually started as a research/inspiration for a fic I’ve been planning but haven’t gotten around to write yet (apart from some bits and pieces).

One time I had the playlist on while I was cooking, when one of my housemates entered the kitchen and commented that I was "really showing my age" with it 😂. Then we sang along to “Bye bye bye” and “Uptown Girl”.

2. Jubiläumscast Wien 2012 (=the cast of the 2012 Vienna production of Elisabeth)

Ah yes, I’ve listened to so much Elisabeth this year. It’s a great musical that has become one of my favourites.

I was on the verge of burnout this spring, having an exceptionally heavy work load in school (I ended up having to drop a class because of it). During that time listening to and watching various productions of Elisabeth and Romeo et Juliette was one of few things that made me feel things. So yay to musicals for keeping me afloat.

3. The Wellington International Ukulele Orchestra

Well this was a suprise. I think it’s because I listened to their “Collected Hits” album quite a lot in the spring. I tried to learn their rendition of “It’s a heartache” on ukulele (guess what, I was dealing with heartache at the time). Plus it was good study music.

4. Years & Years

I've listened to their album Palo Santo so many time (and the song “Valentino” even more times). It’s really a great album! I used it a lot as study music this spring.

5. Robyn

This is also a case of listening to one single album on repeat, namely Honey. I alternated between that album and aforementioned Palo Santo as my study music.

1. “Kitsch” - Jubiläumscast Wien 2012(/Kurosch Abbasi) (from “Elisabeth das Musical”)

I must admit I have a favourite song in Elisabeth and this is the one. It’s a catchy earworm that never fails to cheer me up. Love Lucheni as a character, and how sarcastic he is in this song. 

2. “One night in Bangkok” - Murray Head (from the musical “Chess”)

“One night in Bangkok” is such a fun song that gets stuck in your head. It has the cleverest lyrics filled with puns and various references. While Murray Head’s version is a good one, I have a preference for Raúl Esparza’s version (alas there’s no professional recording released of it).

3. I want you to want me - Cheap Trick

Ok but I started listening to this song because of the fanfic “Only True in Fairy Tales” by  Dragonflies_and_Katydids on ao3. A thing that is really fun about that fic is that every chapter of it is paired with a song that relates thematically to it (with “I want you to want me” being one of them). It’s a great fic, and if you’re into Dragon Age: Inquisition and Cullrian I would recommend reading it. (and if anyone wants a playlist with all the songs from the fic I made one here - there are some bangers on there!)

4. We didn’t start the fire - Billy Joel

I tried to learn this on ukulele (with semi success) - while the chords are pretty simple the lyrics is a challenge, being pretty much 5 mins of just namedropping. There’s a really fun multi-fandom fanvid with it here.

5. This Charming Man - The Smiths

Morrissey and The Smiths was my jam in high school and I still listen to them from time to time (most of the time “This Charming Man” or “Ask”).

6. Kerek Egész - Bereczki Zoltán

When I got into Rómeó és Júlia I also got into BZ’s solo music. I listened to this song and the rest of his album Álomkép a lot in late spring and summer. I must mention that I also LOVE his rendition of Josh Groban’s “February Song” (”Hangokba zárva”). His singing is so beautiful and emotional in that one, and it’s one of my go-to songs when I need to cry.

7. Je n’aime que toi - Louis Garrel, Ludivine Sagnier, Clotilde Hesme (from Les chansons d’amour)

Huh, didn’t realise I had listen to this song as much as I have. It is a fun song from the French musical movie Les chansons d’amour.

8. Lovefool - The Cardigans

Oh Lovefool ❤️ It was rewatching Romeo + Juliet that made me rediscover this gem.

9. Everybody (Backstreet’s Back) - Backstreet Boys

I could never pick a favourite Backstreet Boys' song. However, this is apparently the one BB song I've listen to the most. It's another one of those songs that cheer me up, and makes me want to sing and dance.

10. Alle tanzte mit dem Tod - Jubiläumscast Wien 2012

Oh yes even more Elisabeth! That's a great intro for a musical.

This was a fun way looking back at the year, it really strikes me how music can be this intertwined with memories.

I headcanon Bobby from the musical Company as a non-amorous aromantic heterosexual.

Context: Bobby is frequently pushed by his (rather allo) married friends on the subject of why he isn't married, and why he doesn't like the concept of it, and Bobby goes on a self-discovery on figuring that out while also trying to make his friends shut up about it. The musical wasn't meant to be as queer as it sounds, and the ending is quite sad if you read it as a-spec, though I hope that doesn't deter anyone from checking it out. The whole entire production is dripping with amatonormativity, but it does hold good material on how it affects everyone regardless of how you identify.

RAHHHHHHHHH i have scheduled this for ASAP because omfg I love Raúl Esparza (SVU is my special interest and he plays my favourite character) !!!!! Idk if you meant his version of Bobby or another version but either way, Raúl Esparza mention!

HELLO HELLO HELLOOOOOOO~~~~

It’s been a minute! A short- teeny tiny minute… but a minute nonetheless. It’s been three weeks since Undiscovered Country- Two weeks since Chess at the Kennedy Center.

Truth is- I’ve been a mess.

A distraught, unsalvageable, great stinkin’ mess- and you know what?

I wouldn’t have it any other way.

I’ve been wanting to make a post-Chess write up for a while- I have the first paragraph written horribly on a napkin when I first attempted it at the airport- but that’s as far as I got because I truly- truly don’t have the words.

I thought if I waited- waited for my cheeks to stop hurting from all the grinning. Waited for the puffiness and redness in my eyes to subside from all the tears of both happiness, and heartache that I would eventually come up with some words to convey the intensity of that weekend. Turns out I was sO wrong.

I can’t go on another second without mentioning the fact that I had the utmost pleasure of meeting @rawresparza​ @booyahfordhamlaw​ @xemopeachx @ohbelieveyoume​ @sashkash​  ❤ My heart feels so full just thinking about that weekend! I miss you more than words can say. You made me feel so welcomed…Made me feel like I could really be myself without a second thought. Our time together truly felt like home, and as you can very well imagine… I’m feeling pretty darn homesick.

I have adored, ADORED, the music from Chess from the first listen. The richness, the complexity, the CHAOS; and the fact that it was always faced with issues being transferred over to the US has always made it a point of intrigue. It’s a story that deals with real emotions, shadows real events, and frankly? Some real damn good tracks.

The new book is so, fitting. It’s well polished. It’s modern, without being overbearing. God, it’s so funny. It prickles both your mind and soul with its subtle changes and quirks. The heart of the original storytelling is still there which reminds me over and over that this story is a timeless one.

This cast is stellar, Raúl Espar(a)za, Ramin Karimloo, Ruthie Ann Miles, Karen Olivo, Bradley Dean, Sean Allan Krill, and Bryce Pinkham- How could you doOooOOooo this to meeEEE? AND THE ENSEMBLE. *shouts it at the top of my lungs* THIS ENSEMBLE IS GORGEOUS, ALRIGHT?! They blew us all out of our seats. I fell so hard, so quickly. (Just a few thoughts to include: Soviet Machine is a new favorite - the one I jam to now every morning that and One Night in Bangkok - DAMN YOU RAÚL FOR MAKING THAT A NEW FAVE AS WELL- much influenced by Bradley Deans’ ‘uber charismatic rendition. Karen Olivo is stunning. Stunning stunning stunning. What a dream. She portrayed Florence so exquisitely, and I keep saying it; but it was truly a privilege to have had my heart broken her. BRYCE PINKHAMMMMM- made The Arbiter his own. There was a layer of humbleness he laced in with the character that brought such freshness to the role.)

I didn’t even really know it then, but this was truly the cast of my dreams.

It’s a lot. To handle, I mean. I’ve thrown it out here and there the deep depths of my admiration; how his work has saved me and how he’s changed me yadayadayada but please, please believe me when I say that nothing- nothing will prepare you for when you see this man for the first time, when you h e a r him. No matter the amount of years he hasn’t been on a stage in this capacity; he owns it- to the core. It’s addicting to watch- it’s hypnotic. He knows how to capture an audience so well that all I could wish for was to stay always, just in that brief moment. I barely want to admit this, but I find myself randomly bursting into tears throughout the day when I recall moments of Pity The Child. You probably already know what happened... at... the last day... and pretty much... throughout the entire run... Yeah. He did that. If he isn’t the epitome of true dedication, professionalism, and- and - gosh I don’t even know how to describe what else- 

He’s everything.

13. What are some of your writing and reading pet peeves? Oh god. I have to say, looking back at my old fics, the way I put so much dialogue from different people in the same paragraph 😅 I try not to do it, but I think that, and spelling/grammatical error 😅

22. You can only write fic for one character for the rest of your life. Who is it and why? Oh damn, this is tough, I love to write for all the characters I’ve mentioned in question three. Hmmmm 🤔 maybe I’ll say Rafael Barba? Just because 😅

Does hannibal actually have gay undertones or is that just fandom misreading scenes and interactions like they do with supernatural? I see and read implications all the time about it, but I don't actually know. The fandom also makes it hard to tell if it's actually a good series or not too cause they're so obsessed with their ships

OK, so my phone is on the charger so I had to put away my coping mechanism Pocket Camp way, and I’m ready to tackle this.

I absolutely love the show Hannibal. I watched it as it aired, and it was finished before I started engaging in any kind of fandom on tumblr. I’ve never sought out the fandom afterwards, but I have some mutuals that reblog it sometimes so it makes its way to my dash.

I’m going to have to rewatch the series, because it all kind of runs together for me. But there is definitely the First Season (The Chesapeake Ripper and gore) Second Season (I MISS MICHAEL PITT AS MICHAEL VERGER BUT ALSO GAAAAY), and Third Season (Pretentious Art Film Student aesthetic A+++).

Let me start by just saying.. fucking amazing cast. Amazing DIVERSE cast. Male characters Alan Bloom and Freddie Lounds are now women (Alana and Freddie). My only gripe of characters that die and don’t come back is the sole Asian actress in the cast, Hettienne Park.. and holy shit was that death graphic (but not out of place graphic.. this is Hannibal we’re talking about.. and it honestly makes sense with her character). Otherwise, it’s men getting the axe most of the time… but everyone is superb. Previously mentioned Park, Laurence Fishburne, Mads Mikkelson, Hugh Dancy, Caroline Dhavernas, Raúl Esparza (gawd Raul made such an annoying arrogant prick of a character and I loved every second of him on screen) the small guest appearances from other major actors… and that’s just from season one. They only had to replace one actor.. Mason Verger started with Michael Pitt, and then was replaced by Joe Anderson.. who didn’t quite nail the part, but it helped his face was covered up..

Anywho.. ON TO THE ACTUAL SHOW.

I am going to tell you this, and I’m sure it’s even been talked about by the actors and Fuller at some point. There are absolutely, hella. gay. undertones. Let me preface talking about Hannibal and Will, by starting with Alana and Margot Verger. The latter absolutely come together and are in a gay relationship. A wild change from canon, and absolutely perfect in this universe. I want to say that because it is NOT an abusive relationship, and that is why I believe they explicitly made it text and not subtext (and storyline reasons, but also to parallel the leads)

I tell you this to come back to Hannibal and Will. These two are absolutely 100% infatuated with each other in the most unhealthy way. The way their relationship unfolds during the three season can’t really be explained away as anything else except deep attachment, and dare I say by the third season, love. I believe, and I’m not going to die on this hill, that the reason it isn’t explicitly ‘text’ is for that reason. I think they knew enough not to label it so that people wouldn’t look at it and think it was healthy in any way. I’m not sure if anyone would ever think that, but you never know. 

If you go on my blog, you will find the tag #murder husbands when I reblog anything Hannigram. I absolutely ship them together but in the context of their story and for the extremely upsetting and horrific ways that it plays out in the narrative. The way the series ended left it open to either be a distinct finish or for it to return.. but by the time that final scene occurs, there is no doubt of their feelings towards each other. 

Anyways. Hannibal is a GORGEOUS show. It’s an extremely GORY show with major elements of BODY HORROR. By nature of Hannibal’s character, there’s a lot of talk with Will being on the Spectrum, there’s a lot of GASLIGHTING in the first season, and it’s amazing how well Mads pulls it off. The third season is a bit fuzzy for me because the format changed a bit and it got really trippy, but if you’re able to stomach those things and appreciate them in a fictional setting (and enjoy the Hannibal lore), I absolutely recommend the series. I really hope to see it return.
