If a Ranger dies while their still-in-training apprentice survives, then that apprentice carries their Oakleaf until graduation around their wrist. When they graduate, they have a choice between getting their own Oakleaf or inheriting their Mentors.

No apprentice has ever chosen a new Oakleaf for themselves.

@brilliantinsultsgalore ‘s hc ^ (from a post of rangerthursday’s) has spawned this devastating idea in my head.

imagine an au where halt dies for will somewhere in the whole skandia plotline. and will does this. gilan taking will aside on the docks as crowley stood, frozen, unable to comprehend that halt was dead and gone, and tying the leather cord with shaking hands around will’s thin wrist. tears sliding down both their faces.

gilan probably took will on as his apprentice. their mentor-apprentice relationship was a little unique for its near-equal, older brother-younger brother dynamic — and part of that was very intentionally done by gilan because he wanted will to be sure that he wouldn’t ever try to take the place of halt in will’s life, but also partially because gilan was unsure of himself and felt he couldn’t teach will as well as halt would have.

crowley was hesitant at first to let gilan take will on since gilan was pretty inexperienced and rather young for an apprentice. but gilan was the one who welcomed will back from skandia and cared for him 24/7 through that initial week back filled with a constant onslaught of night terrors and flashbacks and panic attacks. not that they stopped then, but the healer they were working with had suggested they try going back to a gentler training schedule to put some normalcy and structure into will’s life. and when will had said that he really, really didn’t want to be apprenticed to anyone besides gilan, gilan had been determined to move heaven and earth to make it happen. so crowley resigned himself to the fact that halt passed on his stubborn, fierce protectiveness to gilan (and was secretly warmed to see the strength of love and family created between the two apprentices of his, uh, his lifelong best friend), and let gilan take will on, so long as gilan regularly kept in touch with crowley and another nearby senior ranger (in a neighboring fief), in case gilan ever had any questions or wanted advice.

and after the first months of gilan being will’s mentor went amazingly well (within the context of will continuing to work through the trauma of skandia — halt’s death as well as all the canon things)), crowley moved the two of them back to redmont. because honestly, they both know the fief very well from their time with halt, and the duo were proving very capable. and not that crowley said it in his reasoning, but redmont was closer to araluen than meric fief, and this way crowley could visit them much easier.

at some point, will takes to rubbing at halt’s oakleaf on his wrist as a sort of comfort/nervous fidget, and some of the scuffing on its surface left by halt’s everyday wear starts to fade, polished away by time and will’s rough fingertips. will panics when he first realizes this because he feels like he’s erasing the evidence of halt from it, and gilan finds him on the edge of a panic attack one day, going back and forth between saying it’s a stupid worry then sobbing that he had failed halt — which was really about will’s survivor’s guilt, his deep fear that he hadn’t done enough and it was his fault, that he should have saved halt or halt shouldn’t have had to save him in the first place. gilan knows that deeper issue isn’t something he can solve right then, but he could sit with him and help will at least see that no matter how the oakleaf changed, it was and always would be halt’s oakleaf — and one day, also will’s, because there was never any doubt about that. and gilan and also is like. well maybe rub the back and edges more since most of the scratches and dings and stuff are on the front right? and will is like. oh. right. yes. (and then gilan jokingly affects a stern look, reminding will of what they’d just said about how, whatever he does, will is not erasing halt from the oakleaf either way — gilan’s way of gently and humorously making sure will got the point of their talk, which he did).

and later, halt’s oakleaf turns into a sort of anchor point of halt’s memory for will and he starts staring at it as he has the whole ‘hearing the voice of someone you know very well in your head randomly popping in to give you advice or respond to something’, and then also when he thinks ‘what would halt do?’. (though he often stares more at his wrist and sleeve since he keeps the oakleaf tucked away a fair amount of the time so it isn’t dangling about and getting in the way of everything he did). then will starts more directly engaging with his mental!halt and uses the oakleaf as a conduit for that, eventually sometimes even talking out loud to the pendant and lowkey processing a lot of his grief by talking to halt via the oakleaf.

gilan finds will doing this one day and will is rather horrified and embarrassed until gilan pulls back his sleeve and shows will a bronze oakleaf around his wrist — gilan’s old apprentice necklace. gilan quietly explains how he wears it as a tribute to his mentor and father-figure, as a way of saying halt will always be gilan’s mentor and gilan always his apprentice, to hold close his memories of him time spent with halt (much of it happening when it was that necklace around his neck), and as a way of taking halt with him wherever he goes. and gilan says the oakleaf has come to represent halt for him too and that, sometimes, he also talks to halt through it, holding the pendant in both his hands and closing his eyes. gilan then reaches and takes will’s hand to lead him back to the cabin. their clasped hands are the ones each chose to wear the oakleaf on (will’s right and gilan’s left), and the bronze and silver metal gently bump against each other with a light ting! as they walk back together.

will almost doesn’t make it through his own graduation. gilan and crowley decided to keep to just the three of them, guessing that will wouldn’t want to have to deal with a big party. it would be hard enough already with halt’s painfully obvious absence at what was one of the most important events in will’s life, one where halt should have been present more than anyone else. will is eternally grateful to them for it. he decides to celebrate with his friends with a night out a few days later, and it doesn’t hurt as badly then.

after his graduation, with the familiar weight of halt’s silver oakleaf now pressed over his heart, will’s wrist felt oddly bare and untethered, so at gilan’s suggestion, he also begins wearing his old apprentice oakleaf on his wrist.

crowley smiled when he saw this. all those years ago, pritchard had fashioned a rough sort of bronze oakleaf for halt at the one year mark of halt’s unofficial apprenticeship. one night after duncan et. al. had chased morgarath back to the mountains of rain and night post-hackham heath, crowley and halt were alone back at castle araluen and with a night to themselves. halt quietly told crowley the story behind that oakleaf and then gave it to crowley, telling him he wanted crowley to have it. and crowley gives halt his apprentice oakleaf in return. crowley saw gilan with his apprentice oakleaf tied around his wrist when gilan and will had stopped by castle araluen on the way to redmont from meric, and when they left, he took halt’s apprentice oakleaf from where he had kept it in a little box and tied it gently around his own wrist.

halt’s death changed them all, forever. crowley would never again love like he had loved halt with his entire being and then more. will would never feel the love of a father, see someone like his father as he had in halt. gilan would never again trust so wholly, in unfettered totality, like he had trusted halt.

but it would be okay.

on the first anniversary of halt’s death, crowley had ridden quietly to halt’s old cabin and spent the night with gilan and will. at first, they just sat together in silence, alone together around the crackling fire. then, crowley pulled back his sleeve, showed will and gilan the rough little oakleaf dangling there, and told them its story. they spent that night crying and laughing with each other in turn, telling stories about halt, remembering the mentor and father and love of a lif-uh, best friend, that he had been to them. and so, they found they had created their own little family in one other. they were gathered at the start by the almost magnetic quality of halt’s presence that drew them all in. they were bound together by their love for halt and their grief at his death. and now, they saw their love for each other was beginning to grow and fill in the cracks. in time, it would become enough to glue them back together into something new. not quite whole. not quite broken. but okay. loved.

Vaggie's Past

I've seen tons of fics and tumblr posts with 2 different ideas about Vaggie's past. 1 being that she had a human life before she became an exorcist angel, and the other being that she grew up in heaven and was raised by Adam and Lute and the other exorcists. Idk which 1 I like better, but I have headcanons for both. And I've sort of imagined conversations for how the other characters would find out?

1:Vaggie had a human life:

Charlie: Hey Vaggie? Are you heavenborn, or a human soul?

Vaggie: it's complicated? When a human soul becomes an exorcist, the first part of their training involves magic induced amnesia. They're forced to forget everything about their lives including their own name, and they're given a new 1. I know I was a human at some point, but I don't remember anything. Some things stick, like languages, and some strong feelings about certain things even if there's a lack of context for it, but I don't remember who I was or any of the people I might've known. Every earthborn exorcist has maybe 1 vivid memory from their life, but it never actually tells them anything about who they used to be or who they know. I think that's to make it easier to erase any individuality more quickly and make us forget if any of our morals didn't originally align with what exorcists do. Turns us into perfect soldiers quicker. If I remembered my real name, I probably wouldn't be going by the 1 that Adam gave me. He literally named me after a vagina.

Chalie: *hugging Vaggie*

Vaggie: I was never a child.

Angel Dust: What did you just come into existence fully grown or something?

Vaggie: No, I still had to grow and develop like anyone else would.

Husk: Then you were a child.

Vaggie: I was raised to be the perfect soldier since the moment I was born. A soldier isn't allowed to be a child.

Everyone: WHAT?!

Charlie: Why didn't your parents protect your from that?

Vaggie: A lot of exorcist angels are born from flowers instead of other angels. I was 1 of them. I was raised by exorcists and grew up with exorcists.

Alastor or Angel Dust: You were born from a flower? Like Thumbilina?

Husk: They took away your childhood?!

Vaggie: Yeah. I had to be a grow up almost as soon as I could start walking and talking.

Nifty: What was it like being raised by exorcists? Other than the fact that you weren't allowed to be a kid?

Vaggie: I was surrounded by high standards and expectations I had to meet and not allowed to have much if any individuality. Exorcists aren't even given names until after their 1st extermination. They have numbers until then. Also, you know how exorcists have those black stipes on their wings? Those don't appear until their 1st extermination either. Also I was taught to value loyalty and strength more than anything else. Loyalty goes above strength, but not by much. And the second I showed even the slightest hesitation to follow an order, I was cast out of heaven in probably 1 of the most brutal and painful ways possible by 1 of the people I trusted the most. So there's that.

Everyone: *ready to throw hands with some exorcists again*

Charlie: *crying*

What if, people really didn’t leave the league? like, in fics and comics it’s always ppl sneaking away in the dead of night and then being hunted down. But, what if that wasn’t the case? What if, when you swore in, you (unknowingly or knowingly to you) pledged your soul to Ra’s Al Ghul, to the Al ghuls, and to the League of Assassins.

so you can run, but it always feels wrong, and you always end up back there, bc your soul it tugging you back to where it is pledged, where it’s tethered. And when you die, your soul doesn’t go to heaven or hell, but you continue to serve the al ghuls as ghosts.

Bruce doesn’t count, bc Ra’s let him go; he respected the detective too much to enslave him (he pledged to so as to get trained by the league). Jason and Cass weren’t technically part of the league, since they never formally pledged.

And because of this, the Al ghuls have this weird relationship with the occult. They can actually sense/see all ghosts, but only control the ones who are pledged to them. similar thing with magic and the occult (they have magic in their blood). they have a 6th sense for it, like it almost leaves a residue that they can sense/see.

I just know that birthdays in the Al Ghul family are a huge thing. They don’t celebrate like normal people ofc. While they do get each other gifts they do not just get given out. With their extra asses no way. In order for the birthday boy or girl to receive their gifts they must survive the birthday games.

What are The Birthday Games you may be asking? On the day of your birthday from sunrise to sunset it’s up to you to survive a series of assassination attempts from other members of the family. Everything is fair game and after every attack you fend off or avoid you receive a present.

At the end of the day after you have won all of your prezzies ( or taken a dip in the forbidden swimming pool ) all of the league gets together and a feast is held in the birthday persons honour to celebrate another year of survival.

Ok so idk if this is canon or not but I at least know that in Batman Beyond Ra’s body became less susceptible to the effects of the Lazarus Pit so he put his brain in Talia’s body to lure in Bruce so he could take Bruce’s body.

Since Damian in Ra’s heir do you think that was his original plan for Damian?

If Ra’s body slowly stopped healing would he take Damian’s body so he could stay alive?

Is Heir to the Demons head mean something more literal and the only one aware of the “inside joke” is Ra’s?

I just love the capacity for angst and horror this concept has. Think of if Talia found out how mortified she would be. Or if Damian found out and had to live with the fact his grandfather really only wanted his body and not him for his talents.

• Damian spent 95% of his time in the LoA studying and doing mission.

• Damian grew up with a lot of studying to make up for his disabilities, but that doesn't mean he doesn't experience discrimination. He experienced it, a lot. But if he learned one or two things from his grandfather is that, if you just actually look, he mean look, at everything you can see they have hidden advantage. You just need to search, and then they have everything in it, so he view it as being spoiled ( in his case it is)

• His past time is either watching Jason and #011 doing whatever they do as he talk about whatever he like, or he does whatever he feel like at that moment.

• With Jason he also like to hear him rant about his past live in Gotham, they got to gossip real quick once Jason got news on what happened in Gotham.

• He had at least done everything once in his time at LoA.

• He's being teach everything including but not limited to LoA and Al Ghul way of killing.

• Around the same time he realised he wants #011 as insurance, he also realised how bad his position is and need a quick insurance so he end up with a proposal for an entire new organization with no ties.

• He somehow managed to get the approval after wondering around the world in three month, three fatal wound, and dying once.

• That wondering around fill up with scamming, gaslight, gatekeep, making up myth and legend that's absolutely not there.

• His organization is build around everything he's sure will benefit him.

• Most or the members of his organization is handpicked by Damian, either he found them somewhere and inviting them with a formal letter. Or that he saw them when he's in his mission, look useful, pick them up, and brought them back.

• Damian goes around with a wheelchair, before he got his attendant he usually wheel them himself so he pack quite a punch.

• He got his attendant after his first time dying on his 6th birthday

• His attendant is a meta with tentacles at her back that she can control as she wish.

• Damian internally keep side eyeing Ra's.

• Damian still get a lot of mission, but it's nothing involving killing as it suggests that he's a possible heir of Al Ghul.

• Damian enjoyed his mission as Ra’s would let him keep one thing or two from his mission as long as it did not affect the aftermath of the mission. And he also met his friends and his insurance there.

• One of his organization member + Insurance that he gained from the mission is when he was tasked with dealing on a slavery action. Some people from that place did not have other places to go, so Damian decided to take them with him to be his agent in his organization that he built and divide their training method depending on their talent which would be beneficial for him in the long run.

• The people that he take as to his organization would be sheltered and trained to be the best version of their place, the minimum of time they must spent is two years before they got deployed

• The system he uses is different for each kind of member, it works depending on the results of the method, but the main system is the reward system. How it works is simple. At the end of your training and mission you would be given coin’s based on your progress and outcome, that coins would be stored into your id and barcode, and that coin is the currency that you can use to get whatever you want within the organization.

• The agent of the month gets a lot of work benefits.

• His organization cover a lot of things, from medical to resort to entertainment but the main bussiness is trade.

• The bussiness may be different but all the employees, even the one that's unaware of the big boss are all required to be capable of self defense and the routine if an emergency happened.

• He is generous with the pay

• I mean, he is loaded. Why must he care?

• He is very judgemental so all his personal personel is very talented.

I think Adora was too ready to sacrifice herself throughout she-ra.

And I don't think it was 100% a "this is my destiny" thought process. I think Adora was passively suicidal. She had suicidal ideation.

If you think about it, there are at least 4 times where Adora is willing to sacrifice herself for the greater good.

The final three episodes of season 5.

I think Adora's struggle is on her personal self worth. Sure, everyone loves She-Ra, but that mantle can be held by anyone. To herself, Adora doesn't matter. That's why she wears the uniform, even after she left the Horde, because it gives her purpose. She doesn't know who she is behind her warrior princess front. To Adora, being a hero means being willing to give it all up, even your life, for the greater good. But that's not true.

In the beginning Season 5, we see Adora being reckless with her life as well. Throwing herself into battle, the lack of sleep, the intention to go it alone. She might not have actively wanted to die, but she definitely does not value her own life on equal footing to others.

And I wonder if this self-doubt, the crippling sense of worthlessness (that most of us struggle with on a minor level), and the willingness to throw her life away was instilled in her as a child, or if it is just a fatal flaw of her personality.

In Save the Cat, Adora DOES NOT HESITATE to jump down into the abyss after Catra. She was willing to risk it all to get her back. Even if it meant they'd both die. At least they would be together.

It takes not only Catra asking her what she wants, bur also Mara telling her she deserved love AND Catra confessing her love for her for Adora to want to live so strongly that she transforms into She-Ra. I know that the general consensus is that the confession of love sort of levelled her anguish of loving Catra and not knowing how to say it or what to say and meant she was able to turn into she-ra, but I would also like to propose that a part of that is because Catra had just given Adora a big enough reason for her NOT to be okay with her imminent death.

And I think we (as a fandom) talk about Catra's struggles a lot, especially in seasons 4 and 5, where she very obviously has 0 regard for her life. I have read (and written) many a fanfic where she's actively suicidal, even. But Adora's suicidal ideation seems to be glossed over. And I know it's glossed over in the show, I mean it is buried under the guise of destiny (especially since as a kids show you can't have characters saying "I want to die").

In other words, I really REALLY need Adora to get some therapy so she can start valuing herself as a living human being and not just a warrior.
