I just finished reading Fourth Wing. I had to push through the cringey writing because I have an irrational fear of not being able to keep up with trending books. Most of it was great. I love dragons, I love revolution, and I love romance. I just found the writing quality itself to be weak. Why does Rebecca Yarros start so many of her sentences with "Have to say"? That's not how you begin a sentence. Too much of the writing was written in the stereotypical cringey YA style. However, I do appreciate that Yarros decided to make her protagonist strong from the outset (regardless of her physical disability which, on its own is also rare to find amongst mainstream heroines). I also appreciate that she didn't make the 'enemies to lovers' trope excessively toxic which is also rare for a Romantasy book. On the other hand, I don't appreciate the inconsistencies in Violet's character. She is intelligent, she would understand why Xaden had to keep secrets from her, especially when factoring in Dain's signet. Violet's outrage and sense of betrayal towards Xaden was overdone. So far, Iron Flame looks promising. R.Y.'s writing has improved too. I really hope it stays that way.
