Differences in localization and the original pt. 1
I am starting a series of posts with the goal of familiarizing players with some of the differences that localization creates for us in contrast to the original.
Some moments are radically different, misleading and causing controversy, while some do not change the essence of what is happening, but are still noticeably different
Disclaimer: these posts will be written solely for the purpose of familiarization; I do not force anyone to play the game in Japanese, because you are free to choose the version of the game that is comfortable for you. I just noticed some moments and want to share them with you.
The localization of Gyakuten Saiban (Ace Attorney) is essentially good, but there are some moments, IMHO, that I personally would not adapt or change in any way
One of the most serious changes, which, in my opinion, should not have been touched at all, is Mitsurugi's (Edgeworth) phobias.
As if case 1-4 never happened.
In the Japanese version, when examining the files in Mitsurugi's office, Naruhodō will be perplexed about the need for such high shelves - they could collapse during an earthquake.
Okashī na. Aitsu, jishin ga nigatena hazudakara……
...That's strange. He's supposed to be bad with earthquakes...
demo sa. Jishin ga okottara, heya-chū ni fairu no amegafuru ne.
But if an earthquake happens, files will rain down all over the room.
In the localization (for some reason) at this point Mitsurugi was given a fear of heights. For what reason... I don't understand
___________________________________________
Next, another big difference is Naruhodo's food preferences
In the Japanese version, Tomi the clown offers him miso ramen (which is cooked in chicken broth and miso), which Naruhodo refuses and says that he prefers tonkotsu ramen (cooked in pork broth and boiled pork is added to it).
hora. hora. Kuu? Miso rāmen.
Look. Look. Want some miso ramen?
ainiku boku wa tonkotsu-hana ndesu.
Unfortunately, I prefer tonkotsu (ramen).
That is, Naruhodo literally says that he would prefer pork, not chicken.
What about the localization? It's the other way around.
The clown offers him a burger (the patties for which are usually made from beef and pork), but he says that he would rather choose a chicken sandwich.
Why?
___________________________________________
Vending machine in 1-3
I have no complaints about its contents (it is adapted), but here another preference of Naruhodo is lost
“お茶”“みそ汁”“おしるこ” “くず湯”“おでん”・・・・
“ocha” “misoshiru” “o shiruko” “kuzu yu” “oden”
"Tea" "Miso soup" "Oshiruko" "Kudzu soup" "Oden" ...
The lineup is unified in Japanese style.
“ウーロン茶”すらないぞ。
“ūron cha” sura nai zo.
There's not even "oolong tea."
In the Japanese version, reading the menu of the vending machine, Naruhodo annoyedly comments that "there is not even oolong tea". He literally names the tea he likes!
In the localization, he is disappointed that the food in the vending machine is too... ordinary, and he was expecting something that is not usually sold there (popcorn).
___________________________________________
Naruhodō University
Case 3-1 is very rich in information about the young Naruhodō, including the name of the university he attended
In the Japanese version, it is Yumei University (the same university where his ancestor Ryunosuke Naruhodō studied during the Meiji era - then it was called Yumei Imperial University), which creates an important reference to Dai Gyakuten Saiban (The Great Ace Attorney)
watashi no iraijin. Yūmei daigaku no geijutsu gakubu 3-kaisei de, kaze o hīte iru.
My client. A third-year student in the art department at Yumei University, suffering from a cold.
In the localization, he studies at Ivy University, as if referring to the famous Ivy League (elite universities).
A very good decision that shows Naruhodō's abilities and the high quality of his education (my clever boy)
___________________________________________
Interesting addition
And the last one for today, a conversation with Mask in the detention center
When Yusaku (Ron) tells the story of the allegedly lost vase, Naruhodō makes a comment about the absurdity of his story
(... I guess the story is a bit vague...)
The localization decided to make a reference to Naruhodō's education in the field of art, and he compares Mask's story to the surreal paintings of Dali.
A nice addition, but still different from the original version.
___________________________________________
In total, in my opinion, 3 unsuccessful changes out of 5.
If you also noticed any differences - feel free to tell us about them. Let's educate ourselves together.
It will be a bit more difficult with the subsequent parts, because I can't buy the Japanese version of TGAA (it is only available to a certain list of countries), and I don't have the new Apollo trilogy and the Investigations duology to check every little thing (and I don't have an extra $80), and those who record the walkthrough do not always check every clue, where the contradictions lie.

[Moriokamekoorogi] Loxoblemmus sylvestris
森[Mori] : Forest
[Uzume] https://harvardartmuseums.org/collections/object/143706
[Koorogi] : Cricket
Shortly before nightfall, I was weeding in the corner of my garden when this one jumped onto the leaf of 春紫菀[Harujion](Erigeron philadelphicus) and I hurried to take a picture. It is a small insect, about 15 mm long, and this one is a male. Perhaps a very similar closely related species, [Haraokamekoorogi](L. campestris). Although crickets do not look good, their chirps are tasteful.
Today, October 17, is the anniversary of Puyi's death. It is said that when asked what he would like to eat for the last time, he answered "Chikin Rāmen". https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puyi https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/愛新覚羅溥儀#病気と死去 (ja) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nissin_Chikin_Ramen
The full moon that rose in the eastern sky appears much larger and brighter than that of usual. And many crickets are chirping here and there in the shadows of the moonlight.
Keywords: "the last emperor" "cricket" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fTtCXTry0DU

Numa notícia que me entristeceu, a Argentina abraçou a extrema-direita. O modelo empobrecedor do Estado omnipresente termina. Bom sinal ..

A little bit about the noodle stand from 4-2 Gyakuten Saiban
Are there any palindromes in the names and titles in the Japanese version, what was the original meaning of the creators and what was lost during localization.
___________________________________________
First, let's get acquainted with the owner of the noodle stand. His Japanese name is:
矢田吹麦面 (Yatabuki Mugitsura)
The two kanji of his given name (麦面) can be combined into the single kanji "men" (麺), meaning "noodle".
麦 (mugi; baku) - barley, wheat
面 (men; ben; omo; omote; tsura) - mask, face, features, surface
The reading is exactly like this because it is indicated in the dialog box.
The name of his stand, “やたぶき屋”, (Yatabuki-ya, lit. Yatabuki’s Shop) or written as "やたぶきや" on the front side of the Noodle Stand, is the reverse of "やきぶたや" (yakibuta-ya, lit. roast pork shop), as written on the backside.
The character's name was adapted as "Guy", although there is not even a hint of this in his name. Well, probably because one of the kanji readings was similar or what?
There are no questions about "Eldoon", it takes place because of the original name.
___________________________________________
Next about the sign on the house of the noodle shop owner.
The sign has the inscription みそ (miso)
“miso rāmen” tte kaku tsumori ga, supēsu ga tarinaku natchimatta.
I was going to write "Miso Ramen" but I ran out of space.
It seems like nothing special, miso is a fermented condiment, made from soybeans. The word has several other meanings, for example: last day of the month, 30 (thirty), key (main) point, good part.
But they are all written differently.
There is another one, for which only kana is used (just like on the sign).
It is a slang word that means: go ahead and try, why don't you give it a go?
Very life-affirming.
___________________________________________
About the Yatabuki’s dog
yo ̄shi, yoshi yoshi. Kawaī ne ̄ , misosuke.
There-there. So cute, Misosuke.
soitsu wa “renge” ttsu ̄ nda. Kō miete mo, mesudakara yo.
That one is called "Renge". Even though she looks like this, she's a female.
Minuki calls the dog みそすけ (misosuke) - literally a miso lover
The dog's real name is レンゲ (renge) - lotus flower
Where did "Spoon" come from in the localization? It's from the same place. The only problem is this:
Renge can mean "Chinese spoon", which has the shape of a lotus petal, but only as an abbreviation (the full word is written like this - 散り蓮華 [chirirenge])
蓮華 is read as renge, just as 蓮 can be read as renge (other readings - hasu, hachisu).
By the way, this is what it looks like:
However, レンゲ meaning "lotus flower", usually written using kana alone
By the way, when Minuki pets the dog, saying よし(yoshi) is a word used to make someone feel comfortable, a calming word (like there-there).
___________________________________________
About a small discrepancy and musical instruments
itsumo dōri. Shoppai charumera fuki chirakashite
Same as usual. I played the salted charumera everywhere...
machidjū ni miso no kaori o todoketa wake. Tobikiri nōkōna Yatsu o na.
The reason why the aroma of miso spread throughout the city. It's a very rich one.
しょっぱい (colloquial from しおから [shiokarai]) - salty (taste), briny
チャルメラ (charumera) - shawm-like instrument played by street vendors (sometimes referred to as a flute)
By the way, she has a rather recognizable and unusual voice. Search the web.
You can also stumble upon an instant noodle manufacturer with the same brand name.
Then why, I wonder, was it translated as a harmonica in this sentence? Because it hangs on the neck like a pendant, and so that players don't get confused? He can hold two instruments, by the way. Eh...
___________________________________________
About the noodle stand mascot
uchi no donburi. “Shoppa-kun” māku-irida.
My bowl. It's marked with "Shoppa-kun."
The mascot's name is taken from the same しおから (shiokarai) - salty, in the form of the colloquial word ショッパ (shoppa)
That's how Mr. Salty turned out in localization
That's how many interesting things turned out about the noodle stand!

foul language? Slight smut?
You and kakashi were walking around Konoha, he had his hand on your hip as you both walked in synced. You two have been dating for 3 months now, and its been the best three months in your opinion. You had a huge smile on your face as you looked up at him, he didn't noticed until he finally looked down. He chuckled and leans down kissing your forehead through his mask, "Is that what you wanted Hun?" He smiled. You would nod your head repeatedly at his question,he couldn't help but laugh a little at your cuteness. "Kashi, wanna go get get something to eat?" You smiled up at him, kakashi just nods and takes you to Rāmen Ichiraku. You both ordered separate bowls, you happily slurped on your ramen with a closed eyed smile, you soon felt his hand against your lower back. Gently caressing it, you stop eating and looked up at him. He Had his fist resting against his cheek as his eyes were closed in a happy expression. "Silly, you still have noodles hanging out your mouth cutie." He tried not to laugh at your embarrassed expression. You looked away as you ate the last bit of ramen that was hanging out of your mouth.
"You could be slurping on something else" he whispered into your ear. You tensed up and blink. You look back at him, "oh? Like a lollipop? Are you taking me to the candy shop?" Your eyes beamed but kakashi was dumbfounded with wide eyes. Did he hear you correctly? Or did you not hear him correctly? "Y/N... Are you a virgin?" He,raised a brow. You tilted your head to the side. "huh? Yeah...why do you ask?" Now you were worried. You heard how guys didn't like Virgins, was he gonna break your heart?
"Heh I see, then carry on eating. " He said with a smile under his mask. You sighed in relief and pressed your body against him as you ate. "You still coming over to my house right kashi?" You said all giddy. "Yes I am dear, I definitely will." He said innocently. But he most definitely had other plans for you.
