okay sorry still thinking about hbo euphoria. i think levinson is kind of insane (complimentary) for this because if you look at any interview with him he'll talk about how the aesthetic on euphoria is this kind of heightened emotional realism ie expressionism, ie it's projecting how (he thinks) teenagers see themselves onto the sets and settings, which is why you get stuff like non-diegetic lighting and all of those stylised tableaux and even stuff like the camera placement and shot length are meant to convey the characters' self-perception. but then at the same time he and marcel rév also talk about stylising euphoria to capture teenagerhood with nostalgia, esp in season 2. and this is a show that opens with a monologue very heavy-handedly placing the characters with reference to 9/11 lol, because this type of nostalgia is something the characters themselves are engaging in and riffing on as part of their self-conscious self-presentation. you see these two artistic goals in assassination nation as well, where similarly they're not actually in tension at all because the entire design and the scripts and cinematography are all basically mining teenagers' auto-exploitation, which is a different use of narrative pov than most teen shows and movies. and this is also why the chaser dad period piece episode is shot so differently and why the square shots in assassination nation are both annoying and effective And it's why these very silly pieces of media are actually way more morally judgmental than most people think they are lol. like it's literally about [debord voice] the spectacle
i'm kind of obsessed with sam levinson for being a 38-year-old with the generational malaise of a highschool zoomer and also for using the career his daddy gave him to repeatedly write fathers as loci of repressed cultural villainy to the tune of like 90 million dollars. i wish all nepo babies had half of what he has
#it's a visual medium blah blah but the relationship rév and levinson have to The Image is distinct#which is why people complaining about like the aestheticisation of trauma or whatever are really. uninteresting to me here fmfmfmf#AND why they get a pass from me on what often boils down to a pretty conservative prognostication re: the Family

2. Emberek komppal kelnek át a Dunán a Gógai (Kutyatanyai) révnél. 1958. augusztus 17.
Még a legelején érdemes tisztázni, hogy a képen nem a Duna látható. Hanem a Sió. Vagy a Sárvíz. Attól függően, hogy mikori térképet nézünk. A fénykép készítése idején már valószínűleg Siónak hívták. R��gen persze ez is Duna volt, de a taplósi kanyarulat árvágása, majd a Doromlásnál ásott vezérárok alaposan átrendezte a tájat és egy dunai révből sárvízi révet csinált. Vagy sióit. Mindez nem hangzik túl egyszerűen, de hát a Gemenc vízrajza alapból bonyolult téma, amire még jött az emberi beavatkozás hatása is. Kissé rombolja az idilli képet az a tény, hogy a gógai rév létesítése is annak a következménye, hogy az ember drasztikusan belenyúlt a tájba.
