I don't think the people on r/fuckcars understand that someone could live in a place that
1. Does not have a bus system or any other public transport
2. Does not live close to stores
3. Does not have the money for bike equipment

I think a major reason why Inter-City Passenger Rail isn’t taken seriously by a lot of Americans; is that a lot of its most dedicated advocates, seem to have this hatred of cars that borders on psychotic, and I think that hatred distracts both themselves from properly expounding the potential benefits of ICPR, and others from seriously considering those potential benefits.
I myself have no hatred for cars -I’m actually quite fond of them- I just recognize that this countries over reliance on them has been detrimental over all, so maybe I just have a skewed perspective; but when I see someone going on an anti-car tirade and say that trains are better; i get the impression that the pro-train aspect was just an afterthought, like they didn’t actually care about trains that much at all, and just wanted to be angry at cars.
I’m not really sure how to end this, I will say though, if the railways play their cards right; they can coexist with highways, in such a way that both can benefit from it.
And isn’t everyone winning better than someone losing?
I’ll probably made another post at some point explaining how that could work, if I can find the mental energy for it.

None of the infected people were giving up any information on Strangerville or the lab. Sometimes she’d pick up something incriminating but she wasn’t going to get money that way anymore. Unless she were desperate. But she isn’t, people commission her for tech stuff and that pays well on her off days. And she’s been keeping the trailer cleaner. Helps her think better when it’s clean.
Tumblr media
That routine gets stale after a few days, and she longs for that secret lab again. So she goes to Erwin.
“Hey, man.” Lilith grins, trying to not seem so awkward. Pretending like something other than friendship wasn’t growing between them. “Look, it’s been a bit, I gotta go back into that lab. Come with?”
“You’re nuts, those spores really knocked you out last time.” Erwin said, looking everywhere but at her. “Look, I got hazmat suits but I don’t have a filtration system. So basically they’re useless.”
“Great. Can’t you order it off, like. Simazon? And how do you keep getting all this shit?”
“This isn’t an entirely legal operation, you know that. And no, we’d need something specialized for the spores.” Erwin snapped his fingers. “Hey! You ask some of the scientists around for something, and I could jerry-rig it up to the suits.”
“They won’t be suspicious?”
“With all these spores floating around? Not a chance.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The task is actually simpler than she thought. There were usually one or two scientists hanging around the library, and she noticed her old buddy Dr. Jared at the chess tables.
“Hey, sorry I keep botherin’ you.” Lilith took a seat across from him. “But look, I’m kinda worried about all these spores floating around. I’m trying to make, like, a mask or something but I need something to filter them out. I wouldn’t suppose...?”
Jared shook his head. “Sorry, miss. We’re working on it but we don’t have enough samples of the spore clusters to really do anything. But...well, if you’re really serious about it....”
Lilith leaned in closer and lowered her voice. “Yeah?”
“Some of the military guys around here have things that scan for the spore clusters on the ground. If you could get ahold of one, you could find a handful of spores and run an analysis on it down in a safer part of the lab. Come back to me with it, I’ll get you a filtration system.”
It was supremely unfair to have Lilith do this man’s work, but she bit her tongue on a snarky remark. She needed this. “Of course. I’ll get back to you with it.”
She gave him a hug on the way out and re-planted a bug on him. Can’t have too many eyes out.
Tumblr media
Lilith had some free time that evening, so she took a train out to Copperdale to grab a boba. It felt...weird being away from Strangerville. Like the longer she spent there, the more she belonged to that desert. Looking around, seeing other people laugh together and browse clothes, she felt entirely different to them.

Alright, time for my first post on this interesting site, now that I've properly decorated my Page to look like the right kind of robot. I just wanted to say that 196 actually might have saved my entire god damn English GCSE. I entirely shit the bed on paper one, and needed to really excel on paper 2 to have a chance at passing, and it wasn't looking likely.
And then, I read the absolute Godsend of a question 5: It was writing to convince for or against increased funding for public transport.
And My mind was flooded with comment threads, crossposts from r/fuckcars, with Great points I could make, enough Humour and rhetorical questions, that i otherwise would not have had. That Question 5 alone makes up 50% of the marks on that paper, meaning 1/4 of the entire GCSE. Its very safe to say that without heing on 196 I absolutely would have failed. No results yet, But I'm hopeful.
And the timing that at the same time my education has ended, 196 has ended, is strangely poetic, because in a way, 196 was a very important part of my education. Only 2 years ago, I would see a black or gay person on TV and instantly become angry, and it was only my pure curiosity of what this sub with 3 numbers for its name could possibly mean that changed me from being like that.
But of course, this isn't the end of my education, and this isn't the end of the spirit of 196. As I've looked through this new app Ive immediately realised it's just... 196. The metaphor people use of "an endangered animal bred in captivity being released into its natural habitat" is truly perfect. It's like Ive stumbled across this random subreddit, and it prepare you for this site, in closed captivity. Arguments are easy with Reddits thread- focused Format, which allowed me to absolutely get my ass handed to me in many arguments and eventually stop being an asshole.
So this post has no real value or meaning beyond "wheyyyy 196 saved my English GCSE" But I think posts with no real value or meaning are how we do things here, right?

Wild how they just kind of take the Doctor + companions at their word when they claim to not be affected by the Toymaker. Like we know from Kate and the r/fuckcars moderator (king) that people always think they’re not affected.
Anyway cue the Doctor launching into that Humans Are Evil rant and then immediately being way less confident as soon as they’re in the past, before the ha-ha beam is fully operational.

This shit SUCKS, An Anti-Car Zine - Trash Box Zine | March 30th, 2024
Another zine made at DC Zinefest's "Make N Trade" event. Tried to make an "educational" zine about the downsides and stupidity of car-centric infrastructure in America. This is the hill I will die on, bring back commuter street cars and build around pedestrians rather than cars.
Made with a regular pen
If you want to learn more about car-centric BS and how to fight it:

Gahahaha, I feel this. It's also the knowledge that most dodge challengers are running around with minivan engines. How long have you been at it, and what do you do?
I used to work as a lube tech and I give even more space on the road to cars that look a little wonky. It's a little terrifying to tell someone "hey, your axle is falling apart. if this breaks while you're on the highway it's going to take out your entire braking system" or "hey you are down to 1mm on these pads you might want to change them" or "hey so you're missing a caliper bolt and you will eventually lose your brakes. not sure how this hasn't locked up on you by now tbh." or "hey man these are BALD" or "hey uh. you need tie rods. dude you are going to lose a front wheel and that won't be pretty" or a number of other inspection fails and they just shrug you off. "Yeah, I'll get to it" or worse "I don't believe you, you're just trying to take my money." The axle falling apart lady wouldn't even talk to me. The caliper bolt lady actually got the problem fixed.
I don't miss working at a stealership because essentially the more work I could sell writing up on inspections (usually shit they needed like brake pads and rotors but sometimes shit they didn't really need, like a 3box or a brake flush), the more money I would make, and that didn't feel right to me. It made me feel gross to get spiffs. So eventually I quit and went fleet, and I don't regret that at all. If you're doing PM on internally owned equipment, there's 0 incentive to rip anyone off.
Working with cars means i actually can recognize a lot of car models at a glance now, which means i get to have internal monologues like "huh, a C-HR, you don't see those very often. Probably because it looks like it was designed by bionicle circa 2009" and that's just a normal part of my life now

Time and Place
Sophie died. She got hit by a car.
I found out after seeing a story in my newsfeed about two burglars who were struck by cars and killed. The first got struck on her way to the scene of the crime, and the second got hit on his way home from the scene of the crime. The prevailing theory is that they were struck because the drivers couldn’t see them. While wearing visible clothing could’ve prevented their deaths, it also would have resulted in them getting caught.
I am almost positive one of those burglars was Sophie. She was a terrible kleptomaniac, I wouldn’t put breaking into homes to steal past her.
Her funeral was today. The list of speakers they had included her parents, psychiatrist, the principal, the kids in her homeroom, and two moderators from the r/fuckcars subreddit
Luckily, I didn’t have to speak. I’m not afraid of public speaking, what I have to say was probably stupid and inappropriate. Nobody wants to hear about how her recently deceased classmate died because she was a rabid kleptomaniac. And that’s before I burst out laughing at anything the Reddit moderators say.
One of the kids made a presentation about white privilege. One of the examples of white privilege they cited was the ability to remain visible at night while walking naked. I legitimately burst out laughing. I know that this is not the right time, but seriously, was there ever a right time? Besides, the guy’s presentation was about streaking, that’s funny.
Advising people to wear lighter-coloured clothing while walking at night so that motorists and other road users can see them seems like common sense, but according to this person, it’s blaming victims.
One of the r/fuckcars mods spoke after this kid. Her name was Mandy, and she had blue hair, John Lennon glasses, and no fashion sense. I had no trouble believing she was a Reddit moderator.
I was able to keep a lid on it while Mandy gave her speech. That is, of course, until she said, “Speaking from my experience as a bike courier, we wouldn’t need to worry about nighttime visibility if it weren’t for cars.”
Now, what she said had to be the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard. I had to say something. “Um, yes,” I said, “you do.”
Mandy shook her head and aggressively pointed at me. “No, you don’t understand,” she shouted, “if somebody gets hit by a car, the car is going to win because, in the battle of flesh versus metal, metal always wins.”
“That’s true,” I nodded, “but I believe you’re missing the point.”
“No, you’re missing the point.”
I hadn’t missed the point. She had. I quickly pointed out, “You can still get plowed by somebody on a bicycle because they didn’t see you.”
To my surprise, Mandy backed down. “And how do you know that?” she asked.
“Once, when I went skiing at night,” I began, “I saw someone get run over by somebody who didn’t see them because they wore an all-white ski suit,” I said, “That had nothing to do with cars and everything to do with the person blending in with their background.” I’m not exaggerating. I had a bright pink ski helmet for the very reason that if you wear all white on the slopes, nobody can see you. That’s especially true at night.
Mandy wasn’t too thrilled to hear a skiing story. “You ski? Wow, spoiled brat who doesn’t understand how the average American lives.”
“My point is that if you wear something that looks like your background, you are going to be hard to spot. That is the essence of camouflage!” I couldn’t believe I had to explain this to someone more than once.
Mandy shook her head. “that doesn’t change the fact that Sophie got run over!” she sneered, “if you’d listened to your classmate, you’d know that expecting people to dress to be seen is racist!”
I shrugged, grimaced, and pointed at the screen. “The guy’s presentation was about streaking!”
Mandy’s lip stiffened and she narrowed her eyes. “Do you have something against the naked body?”
“Not all naked bodies, but yes, definitely the naked bodies of those who streak. Believe me, none of those guys look good naked.”
Mandy put two fingers on her temple and glared at me. I grimaced and shrugged, “You can’t blow up my head with your mind!”
Mandy made herself bigger, ready to fight. “I’ll settle for an aneurysm,” she retorted, “I shouldn’t have to stand here and listen to this trust fund bitch car-splain why the 1% is so much better than everyone else!”
“No, I’m not,” I winced, “You are a nutcase!”
Mandy lunged at me. The gym teacher had to break us apart.
I got sent home for misbehaving halfway through the funeral. I now know why more people don’t have Reddit moderators speak at funerals.

[ID: Screenshots of Reddit posts in the category "r/fuckcars".
The title reads, "I finally understand why kids don't go outside and play anymore. It's the cars. It's the fucking cars.
The body of the text reads, "Mid-30s dude here, and growing up my boomer parents used to whinge and complain that they couldn't just send their kids outside to play anymore. That it was too dangerous or kids didn't want to go outside and play anymore. I always thought they meant there was a rise in violence, abductions, or other stranger danger growing up, but really it was none of that.
It was the fucking cars. We brought high speed throughways right up to our doorsteps and now we can't go outside and play anymore. I hate it here."
A comment by a deleted user replies:
"Not only that, but they way we make suburbs now essentially strands kids. When my parents moved us out there I became a homebody.
30 or so houses, only a few had kids, none my age. Suburb connected directly to a highways to that was the limit of my world. You can only ride in circles on your bike for so long before you just give up.".
