My back story. Isolation, closed family culture & Ableism
Written by Ashton Deroy Tonight I learned one of my Autistic Peers from Public school thought I hated them. Maybe I was a bit of a bully. For that I made amends. I was sure to tell them that wasn’t true I could never hate them. DON’T BE A BULLY LIKE I WAS! I explained my ADHD and how I grew up to them. This needs to be said. If you have an autistic child? DO NOT isolate them from their peers.…

Strange Bedfellows Pt. 1: Moving In
[Drywall won the fic poll, so here's a short introduction to this new series, in which Mountain and Dew navigate being roommates.] Below the cut.
Ever since the ghouls' den was built, there had always been open rooms; The ministry wanted to ensure that there was enough space for everyone, and part of that meant making sure each member of the pack had their own accommodations, even if they elected to share them with others.
For a number of years, this was not a problem -there weren't nearly as many ghouls wandering the halls of the abbey, and several of the "old guard" had abandoned their corporeal forms when their tenure was complete, meaning they didn't require much of anything, let alone a place to sleep- however, in the time since Copia's ascension to the leader of the band and then to Papa and further still to Frater Imperator, the number of ghouls remaining in their physical bodies had increased significantly.
And, now, watching Aeon bed down on the couch in the common room for the night, it was obvious space had simply... run out.
Aurora had lucked out and gotten Sunshine's room after the ghoulette left the church, but her reluctance to share it had been apparent from the moment it was suggested, and no one could fault her for wanting her privacy.
But from a practical standpoint... Aeon needed a room with an actual bed, both because having the common room acting as his bedroom meant no one could really use it after a certain time, and because Aeon deserved just as much privacy as the rest of them, especially as the new summons adjusted to their new vessels and life on the surface.
To further complicate matters, Aeon was also put off by the idea of sharing a room with someone else, not because he disliked the thought of bunking with another person outright, but rather because the poor quint could be... restless... at night.
It hadn't taken more than a night on the surface in his new vessel for the pack to discover that the younger ghoul was a sleepwalker.
The discovery had been mortifying for Aeon, and, ever since, he'd been vocal about wanting a room with a room with a lock on the door, afraid that he might get himself lost even as he steadily got used to the layout of the dorms; All it would take is one open door and he could wind up outside, and that scared him most of all.
But therein lies the rub; There was simply no way to build a new room downstairs.
When they remodeled the ghouls' den some years ago, they had maximized the space as much as they could, but that had also meant rearranging beams and adding immovable walls and pillars to support the weight of the building on top of them.
It had taken six months to complete and cost the ministry a pretty penny to have it done, so there was no way even Copia -who loved his ghouls immensely- would spring for another huge construction project, especially when the next project on the docket was renovating and repairing the defunct west wing of the abbey.
During a majority of the back and forth on what to do about the lack of space -from finding a room for Aeon upstairs with the siblings to trying to convince the groundskeeper to let the ghoul stay with her in the cottage for a time (a firm "No.")- Mountain had remained quiet, watching the others throw ideas around as if the solution wasn't obvious.
"I could share with someone." He'd said finally, raising his hand when he saw Aeon curling into himself, not wanting to inconvenience anyone, "My room is a double, so it would only be fair."
Like Aurora, Mountain had inherited his room from another ghoul, Zephyr to be specific, but the circumstances had been slightly different; The older ghoul's vessel was unstable, slowly deteriorating the longer they remained trapped within it, so they had been given the biggest available room with a wonderful view of the ghouls' private courtyard so they could spend their final days comfortably.
When the air ghoul was close to the end, Mountain had made it a point to bring them outside and lay them down in the grass, to bring them flowers when they couldn't leave their bed, and to simply make his presence known to the other in the moments where it was clear they just needed a hand to hold...
He and Zephyr... they'd never been close; They'd been acquaintances at best, but because of the wishes of someone else, Mountain had made sure Zephyr never felt alone.
That person, the one who begged him to stay by Zephyr's side had been-
"Finally, a chance to get out of that fucking shoebox."
-Dew.
"Aeon can have my old room." the hybrid announced, "It's small, but it's better than nothing."
And just like that, Mountain and Dew were officially made roommates.
.
.
.
Moving all of Dew's belongings into his room hadn't taken any time at all, the most tedious part of it all had been gathering up the ghoul's extensive t-shirt collection... and not entirely because of the volume.
"You have the same band t-shirt in three different sizes..." Mountain scoffs, holding up the offending piece of fabric for a third time, "Do you like the design that much, or did you just steal them from other people's laundry, because this one is definitely a double XL-"
Dew swats him with a sock, "Oi, that's the one I wear the most!"
Mountain holds the shirt up, doing a one to one comparison, then holds it out to Dew, "Your dress, sir-"
"Sleep shirt! I use it as a sleep shirt, Einstein!" Dew hisses, snatching it away, "Excuse me for liking to be comfortable."
The earth ghoul hums and pulls another piece of clothing from the pile on Dew's bed.
"So you're really okay with sharing with me?" he asks, turning to look at Dew as the other works on rolling up a pair of socks, "You don't have to give up your room..."
The shorter ghoul snorts, "Dude, getting out of this room is all I've wanted to do since I moved into it. Aeon'll probably curse me for giving him my room instead of somebody else offering up theirs, it's cramped, it doesn't have room for anything, and the one window it has might as well be painted on because it doesn't open."
"I'm glad to be rid of it, and if the consequences of having more space is moving in with you, I think I'll be just fine." he continues, tossing his socks into the bin, "Plus, it's not like I haven't roomed with someone before. Aeth and me were roommates up until our first tour together, remember?"
Mountain nods, "I remember you complaining about his snoring, and he'd argue that you were worse, because you wouldn't leave the room to fart-"
"At least the smell went away after a while, his honk shooing ass would go on and on for hours..." Dew interrupts.
"-and then would laugh about it, because you think farts are the funniest thing in the world." Mountain finishes.
"Farts are top tier comedy, and I'm tired of pretending they're not."
"Well, thank the lord below I have so many plants, they'll save us both from you off-gassing constantly."
"Hmph."
As the pair fall back into silence, sorting through Dew's laundry, they both feel a sense of calm.
A bit of casual bickering aside, the two have always gotten along fine; They've been friends for years, having joined the church around the same time, albeit under different circumstances, along with Aether, they'd developed an inseparable bond.
They were comfortable around each other, so it was unsurprising that, of all the ghouls to board together, they would be the ones to do it.
That being said, the rest of the pack seemed to be waiting with bated breath for... something.
Even if Mountain and Dew weren't readily aware of it themselves, there was a certain... tension... between them; The sort that made itself obvious in the way Mountain could pull a pair of Dew's underwear from the pile of laundry on his bed and not even think twice about it, having folded half a dozen pairs already, and how Dew didn't even bat an eyelash seeing him do it.
Perhaps tension isn't the right word; Tension would make more sense if Mountain felt even remotely flustered handling Dew's undergarments that came in varying degrees of scandalous, or if Dew felt some kind of way about seeing the earth ghoul's big, calloused hands holding the silk briefs he'd gotten as a gag gift a year ago and actually wore more often than not, because they felt nice.
No.
There wasn't anything like that going on, certainly not with how calmly they're both carrying on with the task at hand.
Not that Mountain's ears are turning pink with every brush of the soft fabric against his fingertips...
As far as the two are concerned, this is just a normal, casual thing to do that holds no extra baggage at all...
...Fuck.

I know that I am a few hours early, but I really wanted to get this out there since I may not have the chance to do so tomorrow. In remembrance of the late, great Robert Archibald Shaw, whose magnetic personality, mesmerizing screen presence, and dynamic energy entertained us for so many years on the silver screen. One can only imagine what would have been, and how he would have continued to thrill us, and what movies would have been better for his participation, if he wasn't taken from us way too soon. You are still sorely missed, 46 years after your passing, Mr. Shaw!
Top to bottom: A young Robert Shaw; candid Shaw circa 1977; as Quint from JAWS (1975); as Mr. Blue aka Bernard Ryder in The Taking of Pelham 1-2-3 (1973); as General George Armstrong Custer in Custer of the West (1967); as Romer Treece in The Deep (1977); as Doyle Lonegan in The Sting (1973); as Major David Kabakov in Black Sunday (1977), as Captain "Red" Ned Lynch in Swashbuckler (1976); as Major Keith Mallory in Force 10 From Navarrone (1978)
Below: The scene and monologue from JAWS that placed Robert Shaw on the Silver Screen map, in a huge way, back in 1975!!!!! Cemented his super-stardom without question....
youtube
Robert Shaw's memorial stone in Tourmakeady, County Mayo, Ireland, where he resided with his wife and 10 children.
Here's something that very few are aware of..... Carol for Another Christmas is a 1964 ABC American TV movie, written by Rod Serling as a modernization of Charles Dickens' 1843 novella A Christmas Carol. Robert Shaw portrays a very vociferous Ghost of Christmas Yet-To-Come, and gives an amazing monologue with Sterling Hayden that, is riveting, and almost on par as his famous USS Indianapolis monologue from JAWS. If you have not yet seen this minor classic, TCM usually has it available for streaming year round.

Today's translation #358
Yuri!!! on Life official guidebook, Yokoya Hanae's inteview (skating supervision)
Part 3.
-- Did the people around you reacted in any way to the fact that you were supervising the anime?
It aired very late at night, but quite a lot of skaters were watching the anime. They asked me questions like: "Sensei, what was your role [in the project]?" The funniest question I've got was: "Sensei, was it you who decided to put a quad at the end of the program?", but I answered: "No, no! It wasn't me (laugh)".
-- It's an impressive feat to jump a quad at the end of a program, isn't it! Have you talked about it with the Director, as part of your supervising?
I told her that you actually need a lot of physical strength to try that. But (as they wanted to portray figure skating a little bit more advanced than today's) there was no other way to get more points. Other than that, there are only quints.
-- What do you think makes this anime so good?
The first thing that made me emotional was the opening. Among people who teach skating, I've heard this opinion a lot, as well. It's so beautiful and realistic, so much so that even if you didn't know that it was made by Kenji-sensei, you can just see that it was made by him. It's interesting, that it seems the anime is more popular with coaches from West Japan, compared to East. At Jingu [skating club in Tokyo], some coaches haven't even heard about it, but people at Iizuka liked it so much, and I've heard everyone watched it together during West Japan Championships.
-- Maybe among your students, as well, there will be somebody, who would like to skate to Yuri!!! on ICE's music in the future.
Even my son (first grade of elementary school) at last started skating! He really likes the opening song and often dances to it at home (laugh).

Wellesley’s Inaccessibility Fails All Students, Not just Disabled Ones
Anon Wellesley ‘24
With reunion providing a space for current students to voice concerns to alums, accessibility continues to come up as an issue time and time again. As a collective letter to alums noted, Wellesley’s campus is inaccessible regardless of disability. From laundry only being accessible through narrow staircases (thank you, Claflin Hall, for the increased knee strain that provided) to consistent elevator breaks (such as an elevator in the Science Center remaining stuck in an open position on the ground floor for several days in December 2022), the physical environment is not ideal.
The good news is that, technically, the campus is becoming more physically accessible as buildings are updated. Through the capital projects update from Fall 2022 (accessible only through a Wellesley login), Severance Hall should become ADA-compliant after the summer, and (some of, based on the “LR only” note) Tower will be ADA-compliant in 2024. However, the update doesn’t indicate some dorms, such as Claflin, Munger, Beebe, and Shafer as becoming ADA-compliant. While, hopefully, these would mean these buildings are already compliant (although the Claflin laundry and the Quint’s tiny elevators make me doubt it), the lack of information is concerning.
In this update, they say “Extensive deferred maintenance on the Wellesley campus is a long-standing problem.” This results in massive, expensive repairs needing to be done that take buildings out of commission for extended periods of time, which could have been avoided with general maintenance when needed. When I discussed this with some faculty, though, I was told that maintenance gets deferred, in part, because of the intensive changes that would need to be made for ADA-compliance, such as Clapp’s shelves needing to be replaced so that they are at least 36 inches apart (2010 ADA 403.5.1), even though 42 inches would be better. Founders is (allegedly) also an example of this deferred maintenance, where braille can be found worn down to the point of illegibility.
Of course, ADA-compliance doesn’t technically work this way, and buildings are intended to be compliance even if no other alterations or additions are made, but there is a lot of language around allowances being made if the accessibility-oriented alterations aren’t readily achievable, which is a rather subjective definition. At least, that’s what I and some other students I know thought. Upon further research, however, the real loophole comes with the safe harbor of the 2010 ADA Standards, which lets buildings that meet the 1991 ADA Standards avoid updating their compliance … provided the safe-harbor-applicable elements haven’t been updated. With this, the College can continue being ADA-compliant without much work, as long they don’t modify the parts of the building that aren’t compliant with the 2010 standards. I haven’t the legal knowledge nor the mental capacity to read through the entirety of both the 1991 and 2010 standards for Title III to fully note which precise complaints I’ve heard would fall under this safe harbor (which is on an element-by-element basis, adding to the complications for a layperson), but this aligns what I’ve heard from faculty. A common cycle I’ve heard about is Accessibility and Disability Resources (ADR) receiving accessibility concerns and being told it’s a maintenance problem, only for maintenance to be told or tell students that it’s an ADR problem, continually giving one of the smallest offices (alongside the LGBTQ+ and sustainability offices, interestingly enough) the short end of the stick.
Even when already in place, accessibility features mean nothing when they are not consistently functional. For example, the lift in Tower West that provides access to the dining hall from the entrance near the Grey Lady was unusable for several days, first with the door broken then entirely removed.
Tower, in general, is centered around the Great Hall, which, while pretty, is blatantly inaccessible. I have spoken to RAs and students who have mentioned that student organizations would refuse to have events there due to the inaccessible entrance, directly impacting Res Life’s ability to foster community in Tower. Part of the problem with the Great Hall is the runner, which extends to the stairs on both entrances, which I was told administration didn’t want to obstruct because it was a gift to the College.
Even new(er) buildings such as the Science Center are inaccessible, from the accessible entrance on the far side near the dumpsters that requires a walk uphill either on the street or on a poorly paved path to the several occasions I was stuck on a floor of the building, forced to miss class because the elevators were broken. I remember mentioning this to a professor, who told me that it felt like a way of continually beating down students. Even when functional, Sci has an elevator problem — I remember having to wait up to 15 minutes alongside groups of up to 30 other people for an elevator on multiple occasions.
And all of this — over 700 words — is just regarding physical accessibility without any additional context. Swaths of community life has been made inaccessible for scores of students with the decreased COVID-19 guidelines, which were often framed as being due to a lack of positive cases. This framing, however, ignored the fact that they shut down one of the testing centers, leaving College Club (which is so far from the rest of campus that I had to stop going despite wanting to be tested) open three days a week, primarily during class periods; it was no wonder that testing went down, and positive cases lowered as a result despite the many students I saw who were sick and instead had to resort to the free (but expired) rapid tests the bookstore gave out or having other students source rapids, if they were the kind to care about COVID-19. These changes being reversed caught non-coronavirus concerns in the crossfire as well, such as the active prohibiting/discouragement of Zoom classes, which was highly beneficial for students that couldn’t always physically attend class.
ADR was told they were unable to give students COVID-19 accommodations, and that they could not require masks at their events because they are part of administration. This, while a notable point, is only one of many issues with the office. ADR is chronically underfunded, currently running on a single director and an administrative assistant who works for both ADR and PLTC. These two faculty members are supplemented by an array of Student Access Advocates (SAAs), who have become semi-inactive with the resignation of the former assistant director, who left after about a year. The SAAs do what they can, but a lack of funding and structural power prevents action. There’s often a feeling of both resignation and anger when it comes to ADR, a feeling that it should not be the way it is and must improve, but also that the office will never change. However, ADR can change with better transparency, funding, and staffing, alongside the willingness to actually listen to and give more power to the SAAs and to work with other students such as SAW and Active Minds.
Wellesley College is structurally flawed when it comes to accessibility in almost every area. Students should not be forced on medical leave due to normal mental health issues. Several students I know have said that the Stone Center is largely ineffective at best and harmful at worst. At least one of my classes required I enroll in Willow, a depression prevention project by the Wellesley Centers for Women, which to me was bleak. I have several disabilities, both physically and neurologically/mentally, and was told by my major advisor that Wellesley is not necessarily able to accommodate my needs as it stands currently. I know of several students who had to transfer or drop out because of their disabilities.
All of this, paired with the constantly increasing cost of attending, makes it hard to justify Wellesley. The community is often amazing, although I and many others have experienced ableism from our peers, but the administration is hard to push through. When you are not just disabled but queer and/or trans, or a person of color, or FGLI, or any combination of the above, it is increasingly more difficult to feel that you have a place at Wellesley or that you are even welcome. This is why disabled voices need to be centered and amplified, and alums need to make their voices heard. Many of us (current students) know that alums often do not get to see the state of the College, especially when the College is technically ADA compliant, but we are here, ready to talk about it to anyone who will listen to provide better circumstances to current and future students.

movie night with quint! pretty short mellow one but we watched style wars
halloween decoration thrifting with lilith! i took her to a really good st vinnies and a weird little goodwill she hadnt been to before and found sooo many cute things to decorate with, some new mugs for her collection, a toaster (shes been dying for one forever but we hadnt gotten around to it), a baseball cap with a ladybug holding a pride flag that says "produce pride" (probably an event but we cant dig anything up?), and a beautiful crystal splendor barbie (for $20!!!). we also saw plenty more cute and goofy mugs, the fattest coca cola bear plush, some prints of a teens digital anime girl fanart, and a turtle build-a-bear in a ninja costume with a clearly homemade orange tmnt bandana that we didnt take home but still enjoyed seeing. it was such a good day
bowling night with darren and lily! it really was a lovely time this week
had the first really good bagel ive had in a minute since we have a toaster now 😭 plus some strawberries. felt awesome
cel really thoughtfully sent me one of my favorite mellow albums (fief ii) when she knew i was feeling anxious which really made me smile
lilith went and picked us up a yummy dinner from beergarden :) she got the chicken sandwich shes been craving and i got garlic shrimp

Photo
The Hermit. Art by Deanna Bach, from the Bach Tarot.
Also the background is one of the lesser known cool places in Quinte West.... Bleasdale Boulder, a giant (i mean GIANT) boulder randomly in the middle of the forest. Weird and beautiful. Hope you like it!
