overcome, chapter fourteen:

"If someone sees, then I'd offer to burn their eyeballs out," He murmured in her ear, the corner of his lip upturned in a crooked smile. “But that'll create so much paperwork. Any other ideas?”  He was clearly joking, and trying to distract her. His words were so utterly absurd that Riza laughed weakly in surprise, which came out as nothing more than a hitching hiccup in her current state. She relaxed further in his embrace, feeling the responding, rumbling chuckle in his chest.  He was so warm, pliant but firm against her, and so comforting. His hand was stroking along the bare skin of the back of her neck, from the ends of her short hair and down her spine over her t-shirt, his touch light but soothing. She wasn't even sure if he was aware he was doing it, but fuck if it wasn't the most comforting gesture she'd ever felt in her entire life. When was the last time someone had comforted her like this? The memories were foggy, likely stemming far back from childhood when her mother was still alive.  She'd been so accustomed to self-soothing that she'd forgotten how good it felt, to be wrapped in someone else's arms, to lean on someone else. To not be in control, for once.

hi! for the royai big bang ask game:

- What are the most common formatting/grammer flaws you see in fanfics? Any tips for people to improve?

- Favorite Royai headcanon? Silliest one? Most controversial one? Most specific one?

i answered the flaws one here but i can add more advice probably! i think people expect writers and beta readers to always know the grammar rule for any situation, but that’s not always realistic! sometimes it’s a good idea to look something up, if you’re not sure, or you and a collaborator disagree, or whatever! i often fuck up a lot with ellipses and m-dashes and how much space those require (zero!) but looking it up often has helped me lock it in more.

number one favorite headcanon which i will always say when people ask (and then i’ll try to throw in another haha) is that to me, royai is a queerplatonic relationship. second fave is roy deciding not to use the philosopher’s stone!

silliest i answered here but another one is that even post losing his vision roy does not stop being wildly reckless and getting himself into Situations(tm) (like the day he decided he was going to learn to skateboard or the time he said dipping a finger in the water is the easier way to figure out if my pasta is done cooking) and he IS going to make riza go grey early bless her heart

controversial probably…. not the word’s biggest parental royai guy! i love love love my friend’s oc babies for them but in my little world they don’t have kids and probably won’t

specific…. god i don’t know. maybe aro!riza is me specific? i’m sure i’m not the only person who sees her that way but its the most #my royai one i think

She adjusted the grip he had on the knife gently with her fingers, sliding his hand further up the handle, closer to the blade. She had to get quite close to him in order to do so, and her side brushed against his.  “Like that.” She instructed quietly. His hand was warm, pliant under her touch. “It'll make your chopping easier to control.”  “Sure.” He sounded slightly dazed, for some reason.  “We also wouldn’t want you to lose a finger.” She teased. “You might need those, after all.”  “True.” He agreed, his voice dipping lower, huskier than usual. “Thanks, Hawkeye. You're always protecting me from myself.” She caught his gaze, and was drawn in like a moth to a flame, unable to pull away. His dark eyes were warm, gentle, but molten - as though he'd like nothing better than for her to be even closer.  What scared her was that she wanted to be, too.

Smirking as Mr. 3 laid out the pieces of glass and went over their plan, Ikkaku was quite pleased with how this was going. As much as she would have loved to include Mihawk in the festivities, he was being particularly grumpy and stubborn in regards to experiencing the holiday cheer. So the only course of action was to keep him out of the way while she, the intrepid and artful butler, and their companions had their party.

"I'd suggest making a wax figure of one of the humandrills to put in the room, too," she advised, setting up a seating area with a few bottles of wine, a charcuterie board, and several good books. Mihawk would hopefully be less interested in slicing down the door with one of those glass shards (because if anyone could, it was him) if he decided the peace and quiet was more palatable than chasing around an engineer and an artist. "Keep it in shadow, but the silhouette will hopefully keep him from catching on too quick."

Satisfied with her work, Ikkaku stood beside Mr. 3, nodding in approval. "Really, we're doing him a favor. You know if we didn't throw a party, Shanks would and we're at least giving him a comfortable room to keep to himself and avoid the festivities. Shanks wouldn't be so accommodating," she justified. Of course, she knew she and Mr. 3 would be in heaps of trouble for this little stunt, but the call of holiday cheer and hosting a good party far outweighed the consequences. Mostly.

Hoisting her heavy wrench onto her shoulder, she gave her partner in party crimes a wink. "And like a toddler, we'll just have to give him his bottle and put him in time out. Still, in the spirit of the holiday, maybe we could convince Perona to send a trio of ghosts after him to make him less of a sourpuss. Or Law could replace his heart with a bigger one. And if those don't work, you're welcome to hide out on the sub with me until the new year while he cools down."
