This is us!!!
Would anyone be interested in a podcast run by queer teenagers that talks about queer books and media? It would essentially talk about different shows, movies, books, and essays about queer things and the representation and social issues that are talked about within the subject matter, and also how this applies to the queer teen experience.
We'd be discussing popular media, small creators, many different kinds of art, big things happening within the community, and different problems we face by being queer teens and how we deal with them.
The entire podcast will be written, recorded, and edited by a group of 3-5 queer teens, with other people periodically joining for specific episodes.
Anybody?

“I think that’s the other thing about including these characters and these themes in media for kids that is so crucial. Because what you learn when you don’t see that is that your story isn’t interesting, and it isn’t beautiful, and you learn that as a kid. Maybe you will find out that it’s not that—that your story is beautiful and interesting—as an adult. If your experience has been completely invisible in all kids’ media and then you grow up and you see something about you or you somehow manage to find it even though it wasn’t something in family entertainment—even if you see it and you know it was for adults, you still know as a kid: I wasn’t supposed to see that. And that has a really profound effect, I think, on a kid. To know that the thing you relate to is not really supposed to be for kids. ‘cause what you learn is that in an appropriate world, you aren’t there. In a family-friendly, all-ages-appropriate world, you’re not supposed to be there. And you internalize that so hard.”

[💬] - “QUEERY: ???”
”QUEERY…” by @robotixtz
When reality sets in…
*a cyborg egg, hyper-fixating & coping w/ trans miku, cracks her shell in the closet*
There’s a lot you can do to a person. Happy Pride Month 🏳️‍🌈
NOTE: To whom it may concern, a lot of QUEERY is derived from my personal experiences with gender dysphoria & other personal narratives composed into a short, coming of age story taking place 3-6 months — or even years — into the future as the cyborg Bukimi (any/all) is left with unanswered QUEERIES about her regressed C-PTSD, unbeknownst to her, after coming out. From how the media treats us, it reveals how much trans people are often demonized in discriminatory rhetoric. Ultimately, I want to represent the philosophy of Humanism seen within people, whether it be in human decency or in civil rights issues, particularly representing those of the oppressed, marginalized, & outcasted. It might even evoke strong emotions of sympathy & empathy; those without a voice must be heard in a mature subject matter. Overall, my dream with this project is to create psychological resources accessible to LGBTQ+ youth within an anecdotal narrative standpoint. They deserve life, love, dignity, & respect.
FLAGS: AroAce, Queer, Rainbow, Microsoft, Bisexual, Demigirl, Trans, QPR, & Unlabeled

tbh at work i never know how obvious i want to be? like im not trying to closet myself in any active way but ive also never been Out per se at a non-theatre job, like that's not the kind of conversation that's gonna come up. i was pretty sure a coworker at my old job saw me listening to queery but like i imagine some people notice ~something~ even if they're unlikely to place exactly what
honestly sometimes as a non-dating type of queer who is like, not gonna talk about her teenage exish at work for any reason, the question of closeting really comes down to media tastes, knowledge in deij conversations, and when i say "my sibling." but none of those things are really about my queerness, just maybe my proximity to queerness.

I was silly about this and now I shall be serious. Essay time.
So me and my bestie talked about this in a recent episode of our podcast (shameless plug we are Teenage Queeries on Spotify) and the biggest thing it boiled down to is that big queer media is simply heterosexualized so that it's more palatable to straight viewers.
Do you ever watch a TV show about queer people, most likley a teenage romance, and go "aw that's cute, but why is no body reacting badly to this?" That is essentially what this effect is.
You see, as it turns out, big film companies don't actually care about what kind of representation we get. What they do care about is money. Now, shows marketed to a queer audience can be good cash grabs, but it's not enough. Why, you ask?
Because if a popular movie or show were to show an authentic queer experience and not censor the messy time of trying to understand yourself, the straight white girls that make up 50% of their views would have nothing to relate to. And if said piece of media was to show the blatant, insulting, and sometimes downright violent discrimination, their audience would, god forbid, actually have to consider that queer people are oppressed. And then, oh no! Now their audience feels bad! They don't want to watch shows that make them feel bad!
So instead of giving us a rough, messy, but still beautiful authentic queer story, we get bland vanilla shit because the TV people want to make money off of straight girls trying to live vicariously through queer, mostly mlm relationships because they think it would be "easier".
Anyway that's why teen fiction commits two vanilla characters to a lifetime relationship where nothing ever happens. Hope I answered the question lol.
why does fiction commit some teenager homosexual couples to being forever in a relationship mostly without problems?

Yuri Manga List
Lists:
LGBT+ Fiction LGBT+ Anime Yuri Manga LGBT+ Film & Comics
This list merits a separate post because I didn’t want to lump it in with the Western fiction post because, well, it is Japanese, and there are some huge cultural differences.
I feel the need to clear up what ‘yuri’ is, as a genre, and as a unique sociocultural Japanese genre at that.
First, yuri is not the female version of yaoi. At least not sexually. Let this die, please. Second, actual yuri is for women made by women, and any yuri with a target demographic of males (shonen and seinen) aka the ‘lolz lesbian p0rn’ niche, is technically not yuri, even though it gets grouped in by sheer merit of having f/f in it. Third, shoujo-ai is not a Girls’ Love in Japan and it has nothing to do with yuri.
Yuri means ‘lily’ and it is the counterpart to gay male fiction Bara, which means ‘rose.’ As stated above, it is created by women, usually gay women, for other women or girls. However, this is where the cultural aspect kicks it. It is entirely for CIS girls... and entirely for lesbians, too. Fiction is about fantasy, and Japan has gal pals to the extreme. It is very common for young Japanese women to bond extremely closely to other young women, far more than would be considered ‘friends’ in some cases, but when the circumstances change they will move on, get married and ‘be adults.’ In that regard, yuri is like yaoi; it is a CIS fantasy about gay characters, just usually not a sexual or fetishizing one, to process hard to deal with aspects of daily life.
This list is very limited because I tend to stick to legal sources of entertainment, and by no means reflective of the sheer volume of f/f manga. Seven Seas Entertainment has printed at least a dozen yuri series, for example, and Yen Press has also started publishing yuri as has Viz.This does not include anime, just printed media. Also, not all of these titles are yuri, but they all contain f/f.
Titles/Publisher (in English): Citrus/ Seven Seas The Good: gorgeous, smooth art style, realistic situations (if not exactly realistic solutions LOL), strong protagionist The Bad: comes off as fanservice-y (I honestly don’t mind but it is more sexual than a lot of yuri), plays hard on a lot of super dramatic tropes at the beginning which makes it eye roll worthy in places Extra Notes: This is probably one of the most controversial manga on the list, and even more so since it’s getting an anime this winter season. Still, of the yuri I’ve read, this is my favorite. Personal Rating: 8.5/10 Recommend: Yes
Tumblr media
Titles/Publisher (in English): Kase-san/ Seven Seas The Good: cute The Bad: mostly fluff, bland characters Extra Notes: I did see a rumor going around about the manga-ka’s other works being problematic. Honestly, manga-kas are professionals and they write what their editors/contracts want, so I don’t find this to be a genuine reflection of character nor does the problematic content extend to Kase-san. However, some people like to know the author and that factors into their enjoyment of the work, so fair warning. Personal Rating: 5/10 Recommend: Meh
Tumblr media
Titles/Publisher (in English): Kiss and White Lily for My Dearest Girl/ Yen Press The Good: multiple pairings, serviceable art, wide variety of tropes The Bad: multiple pairings, wide variety of tropes, mostly fluff, main pairing/romance is unlikable and very Shoujo-Romance-Trope heavy but without a dick. Extra Notes: I enjoyed the series enough to check all the available volumes out from the library but would not buy it. It is an anthology style series, so if you don’t like micro/mini stories, this isn’t for you. Personal Rating: 6.5/10 Recommend: Yes
Tumblr media
Titles/Publisher (in English): Whispered Words/ One Peace Books The Good: seems more lesbian oriented than most yuris that aim for both sides, brings up gay marriage, charming characters, decent plot The Bad: so slooow but not in a good slow burn way Extra Notes: Of the series I’ve read, this one is complete and rather long-running. While there were parts where i was bored, it is still worth a read. Personal Rating: 8.5/10 Recommend: Yes
Tumblr media
Titles/Publisher (in English): Akuma no Riddle/ Seven Seas  The Good: nice art style, plot focused, distinguished characters and character motivations, successful use of tropes in a satisfying way The Bad: parts of the end are confusing, character likability is hit or miss, a bit contrived as most battle royale series are Extra Notes: This series is complete and there is an anime of it. However, the anime tones down and censors the gay parts a lot. It is a battle royale, but not a typical one. Personal Rating: 8.5/10 Recommend: Maybe, genre dependent
Tumblr media
Titles/Publisher (in English): Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid/  Seven Seas The Good: has cute moments, likable characters The Bad: sleazy Extra Notes: Remember when I said not all f/f is yuri? This is not yuri; it is a seinen and created for men. The anime censors a lot of the more problematic content and makes it a lot more... palatable for other demographics. I honestly got about a 1/3rd into the first volume and put it down. Go watch the anime. Personal Rating: 5/10 Recommend: No

free jewish resources online
Because so many of these lists require a high buy-in cost, I feel like I should add my own personal resources for learning about Judaism. Because on the one hand, yes, unfortunately a lot of resources cost money, and if you’re actually converting, you need to be working with a rabbi. But if you’re just wanting to educate yourself, or if you want “lighter” reading, I have some recs!
Keep in mind that Judaism varies a LOT in both belief and practice. This is not all-inclusive and opinions on EVERYthing may differ.
Podcasts/audio (I grabbed whatever link seemed best, but use your fav streaming platform):
Bad Jew Weekly is hard to find on some streaming services right now, but it’s SUCH a good casual look at Jewish thought from a more relatable/average point of view.
Jewish History Matters - for historical context, told engagingly!
Jewcurious is a podcast (also uploaded as a series of Youtube videos) specifically for people new to Judaism.
Hashivenu is put out by Reconstructing Judaism and shares practices that encourage resilience.
ReformJudaism’s podcasts include “Wholly Jewish” (interviews about identities and how they intersect with the individual’s Jewishness), “Stories We Tell” (fun short stories, child-appropriate), and “On the Other Hand: Ten Minutes of Torah” insights on the weekly Torah portion.
Judaism Unbound is another informative podcast. A few episodes are transcribed on their website here.
Digital Hammurabi is a Youtube channel put together by historians studying the ancient world. They tend to cover Biblical history as well as the history of cultures of the surrounding peoples.
Books that tend to be available at US libraries
(note - your local library may be willing to buy books at your request. Additionally, some libraries let non-residents sign up for a digital library card for free or for a small fee. These change frequently so you may need to check out the library’s websites individually! You can also specifically search for a book on Overdrive and then “Search for a digital library with this title” to find one near you. I’m only listing stuff here that I didn’t pay a dime for and which are on Overdrive; most have audiobooks available too.)
Jewish Literacy Revised Ed by Joseph Telushkin. A broad view of Judaism basics and history. (Note that IMO, some of the history seems anti-Islam in a way that I don’t usually see in other Jewish histories.)
The Jewish Book of Why by Alfred J. Kolatch. Another one of those basic training manuals.
Choosing a Jewish Life: A Handbook for People Converting to Judaism and for Their Family and Friends by Anita Diamant.
Uncovered: How I Left Hasidic Life and Finally Came Home by Leah Lax: A moving memoir of a gay woman and her experiences with the Hasidic movement of Judaism. (May be triggering for those with negative religious/homophobic experiences.
Becoming Eve: My Journey from Ultra-Orthodox Rabbi to Transgender Woman by Abby Stein: A memoir of a transgender woman who was raised in the Hasidic movement. (May be triggering for those with negative religious/homophobic/transphobic experiences. I dealt with panic attacks from this for weeks but I still recommend it. It’s that good?)
Torah Queeries edited by Gregg Drinkwater, Joshua Lesser and David Shneer. Commentaries on Torah portions from a queer perspective.
Tevye the Dairyman and Motl the Cantor's Son by Sholem Aleichem. This also is more cultural history than religious information but dammit. It’s the source for Fiddler On The Roof and it is charming and you will cry.
Other:
Visiting a local temple is free and informative - check their website to make sure visiting is cool. Many are currently streaming services and even have their recorded services on Youtube. (Mine did not charge a fee for any conversion-related services. Based on what I see online, that’s not the norm... but it’s possible!) As an example, here’s OurJewishCommunity.org’s Youtube channel, which uploads services regularly.
Note - many temples and synagogues filter attendants for safety reasons. If you can’t access your local temple’s streaming services, you may need to reach out to an administrator to ask. They also may be able to direct you to other local activities, like Torah study. In my experience, there is no barrier to entry saying that you can’t participate unless you’re Jewish already - it’s only about being open and engaged and respectful. Even if that’s not the case for your local temple/synagogue, it tends to be true for streaming online events--which also tend to be “pay what you can”! For example, some of Marlene Meyerson JCC Manhattan’s programs, classes, and holiday services.
Sefaria. Sefaria. Sefaria. Did I say Sefaria? It has holy texts (English and Hebrew!) along with study texts, hosted for free, and it is HUGE. Click on anything and it will link you to commentary and other resources. Users can create “sheets” to arrange quotes by topic. Here’s a helpful list of information by topic!
Stay informed on social media. You will see a lot of perspectives online. Reddit has a subreddit of course if you want a taste of those. Ask-jumblr here on Tumblr also shares great resources and has an FAQ page. Of course, following people who you like who are also Jewish is good and may give you a more well-rounded perspective on Jewish life (but you probably knew that!).
The Jewish Theological Seminary has tons of online resources for the curious. The link is for their Youtube.
MyJewishLearning has how-to articles and other easy-reading info.
RitualWell is great for finding prayers.
I can’t write a list like this without mentioning Chabad. It tends to be the first result for Google inquiries because it is an extensive online resource, but note that it doesn’t necessarily curate perspectives that are LGBTQ+ friendly.
ReformJudaism also has a resources tab which includes an “Answering Jewish Questions” section. They also offer Judaism 101 courses online.
T’ruah is a political rabbinic group fighting for human rights. I’ve linked their news section, but you can also sign up for their newsletter to stay updated!
OKAY. So that should be a few hundred hours’ worth of no-cost resources, audio and visual, and I’m sure there are a jillion more that I don’t know about yet. So go!! Go read and listen!!! And share more info if you’ve got it!

Previously talked with my mom about my love of lesbian romances in Western media, equality in partnerships, and the Japanese Phenomenon of Shounen-ai and theoretical explanations for the fanbase.
Anyway, we watched The Christmas Setup, she loved it.
We're breaking up holiday romcoms with Pete Davidson's The King of Staten Island. We both love Pete Davidson, my foster-sister also has BPD. Such mom vibes from both of us.
Anyway, now I'm trying to think of the best Shounen-ai anime for my mom to watch, and all I can think of is Gravitation and Yami no Matsuei, mostly I watched the porns with my fellow queers as a teenager, lol. Eerie Queerie/Ghost! a possibility if they made a decent and short anime.
Anyway, mom awesome.

Sometimes i think back to this gay manga i read in my high school library that had a very small lgbt section (literally one bookshelf about my height or smaller and im not 5ft) and it was called eerie queerie and i remember cringing at the title but checking it out and being embarassed but like actually enjoying it. I knew i was gay(bi) but was still like coming to terms with it and not seeing it outside of media aside from overly sexualized yaoi and like shounen ai was like??? A godsend of sorts??? Cause its like hella cute but also not super sexualized??? Like yes there are some uhhh...questionable aspects (of manga romances in general oftentimes*coughteacherstudentcough*) but like...i hadnt even thought of canon lgbt characters in a romance where one of them didnt die (looking at you house of night series you did my baby boy wrong. So wrong. I stopped reading because he died i didnt even read his death my friend told me).
Anyways. Im still struggling reading lgbt books but ive definitely started more. Wont lie. Started with Captive Prince. But also im in the middle of Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe(???) Which i saw OVER AND OVER as a recommended book in the library(multiple libraries actually) and was actually only somewhat interested in because the names and it sounded p cool and kinda adventurey (also theres another somewhat(???) Gay book that has to do with magic and demons (might be agraphic novel actually) that i want to read as well) but either way i never started reading it till now.
Anyways i think im done blabbing about my current fray into lgbt books so...
