The fear of the masculine woman predates any modern conception of transness and gender. There are stories about monstrous women with masculine traits from the ancient world, they were objects of fear or disgust or hatred. This is not misdirected transmisogyny, it's not transphobia misdirected at cis women, it's a fear of female transgression and masculinity. The two are inter-related and trans women are affected by this fear of female masculinity too, and cis women are affected by transphobia but the fear of the masculine woman didn't come from transmisogyny. It predates it. It could be seen as a fear of transmasculinity, even those early examples of women becoming like men and taking on or embodying masculine traits. But it's also not necessarily that. It contains aspects of intersexism, but isn't strictly that either. It's a fear of female masculinity and the transgression of gender norms and fear surrounding women's control over fertility, and so many other things.

Anyone who sees the way masculine women (and transmasculine people) are treated as purely a result of transmisogyny is mistaken, or actively engaging in misogyny, intersexism, and erasure. It's so much more complicated than that.

There's some connections between its use in feminist thought and in queer theories, and I'd love to know your thoughts about it. I personally was thinking of when [specific statement] was said, and how I would apply this theory. I hope it's as interesting to you as it is to me."

I was rewatching episode 5 and the way Mimzy was interacting with Husker made me think. There wasn't a lot to go on besides Husker distrusting Mimzy and Mimzy clearly knowing that Husker is on Alastor's leash and has been 'slinging booze' for the Radio Demon for quite some time (maybe Al has had Husker as a spy in various bars to keep on top of Hell's gossip and information? Everyone wants to talk to the bartender, after all). But she did seem to take some joy in ordering Husk around.

I know we've all been coming up with theories as to why Alastor would bother to spare Husk when he came to Hell and wiped the board clean of Overlords (minus Zestial who Alastor seems somewhat wary of). Maybe he didn't want to go throught the bother of reshuffling the power structure again by killing off a recently risen Overlord or maybe he saw an opportunity for a powerful thrall.

Or maybe Mimzy, the woman who stole 50 grand from loan sharks presumably to pay off more imminent debts, got herself stuck in a contract with the Overlord of Gambling and Alastor had to go bail her ass out by playing for her soul in a poker game.

A game that went so well for Alastor that he ended up completely cleaning Husker out and then having the fallen Overlord sign his soul over as well.

I just really love the idea that Husk hates it when Alastor helps Mimzy because the last time he helped her his entire life went to shit.

Some of y'all never learned the difference between queerbaiting and queercoding and it really fuckin shows. And even more than that some of y'all will sit there and call something queerbait just because they don't kisskiss.

Characters should not and do not have to actually kiss and/or fuck nasty on screen for a queer and/or romantic reading of their relationship to be valid. Not the least of which reason is that not every relationship such as that involves kissing or sex, but more importantly:

Relationships are more than that. You know this. I know this. We wouldn't be shipping people otherwise, or be so invested in the relationships between these characters we love.

Why is a movie where the characters of the same gender love and care deeply for each other and complete each other's worlds, and yet never kiss or fuck, bait, while the one where the characters are underdeveloped and have no real reason to be together or even like each other than because the plot says so but they kiss and fuck like rabbits NOT bait?

Queerness deserves nuance, it deserves different shit, it deserves messy and toxic shit, it deserves to be scrutinized and analyzed, rather than simply consumed and sanitized.

Would the former film have a kiss/sex scene if the world it existed in didn't force it to be a product in a violently heteronormative society? More than likely. But we can't say for sure.

Queer media has survived since forever thanks to queercoding, which was used to let representation of queerness and queer culture exist AT ALL under homophobic corporations. Queer PEOPLE have survived their actively hostile homes and communities thanks to codes and signals that identified each other and where was and wasn't safe.

That legacy won't go away, even as we gain more acceptance in society. Even if the day comes in my lifetime where queer people all over the world are free to live out our lives in peace and comfort without our very lives and bodies being targets for violence and repression, that tradition STILL wouldn't go away. Because it's INTERESTING and FUN and DYNAMIC and GOOD CHARACTER WRITING.

Not every deeply loving and caring relationship is romantic, just as not every buddy-buddy relationship is platonic. There's so much grey area, so much to look through, to analyze with different lenses, to understand about how we conceptualize relationships.

Queerbaiting is NOT just a stand-in for queercoding you didn't like. And it's not bait just because they didn't kiss or get together or fuck. Queerbait is when something is MARKETED to queer people, but doesn't actually have any queer rep in it at all.

Does that mean some queerbait is queercoding in and of itself? Yes. But not all.

But when it's characters building a deep abiding love for each other over the course of the story, one that changes them and how they see the world, regardless of the fact they don't actually kiss or fuck or say "you are now my partner/spouse..." I'm sorry, that's not bait. That's a love story. And regardless of what kind of love it is, platonic, romantic, sexual, eldritch, whathaveyou, that's what queer stories ARE.

Especially when the characters in question are literally canonically queer, but their relationship isn't made EXPLICITLY romantic. Like guys. Really?

Please read anything at all about the history of queerness in your medium of choice before you start shouting "queerbait" at things that are literally made to be complicated.

I just was scrolling through someone's blog (someone who made a post about not believing in transandrophobia; someone who is a transfemme), and I just . . .

I was scrolling, and there is one post that was essentially like a trans woman saying it's easy for quite a few trans women to pass and the reposts are like "yeah I put on a woman's shirt and passed a mirror and said 'oh I look like a cis woman." However, I'm still scrolling and find a post that says all the transmascs talking about how it's hard for us to pass are probably pre-T/transition but it's so much harder for trans women to pass.

I'm so tired of people deciding what passing is for trans people and what works and what doesn't. You can pass in one situation and look exactly the same and not pass in another. And also which is it? Do all trans men pass when we put on men's clothes (I know we don't automatically pass, please engage with trans men please), or do we not pass until we have our first testosterone appointment (seriously, why are we so behind in transfeminism and unity?)? It's pretty fucking ironic how we talk about how trans men's experience are erased and ignored, and you decide to do the exact thing we mention.

Why are people so quick to decide they are the fucking authority on other's experiences? I don't see how any of this makes sense or is productive. We, as trans people (as a whole), all have trouble passing, and yes, there are outliers to every statement on passing or experience we try to pass as absolutes, and honestly, some of you are so wrong about other's experiences that you aren't creating "good theory" or empathizing with people who are hurting JUST AS MUCH AS YOU. But sure, let's keep arguing who is the biggest enemy and who has it better as we watch our brothers, sisters, and siblings drop like flies in a transphobic society. How are you helping, even yourself, by doing this? Hint: you aren't.

I'm not big on the resolution style of things but I've had a goal basically since I left high school to regain my reading stamina. Fully tooting my own horn here but I have been able to maintain my critical approach to media consumption and analysis but like. I was inhaling books up until 9th grade and I've never recovered from that loss of stamina and I hate it!!! I hate that the only things I really can analyze anymore are scripts, comics, and visual media!!! I want to read books again!!!!

tbh I think it’s kinda fucked that young men who get radicalized by the alt right tend be receive way more sympathy from leftists than young women who get radicalized into terfdom. It seems like a lot of online leftists see young Nazis as enemies (as they should), but redeemable ones. They get the luxury of having their radicalization explained with Materialism so that they can, in theory, eventually see the light. Which on some levels is good. Deradicalization is a good way of defanging dangerous movements. But radfems never get that grace. Which is understandable, they are hateful bigots after all, but their ideas don’t spring from nowhere. I’ve spent more hours than I’d like to admit curiously scrolling thru radfem blogs. And honestly. I get it. A lot of it just feels like understandable frustration at growing up in a misogynistic culture. On tumblr at least, it seems like radfems are primarily angry at men, trans people are secondary enemies to them. Its justified to be angry. I may not have always lived as a woman, but I harbor a lot of pain and anger at the way misogyny affects my life. But that anger can not be the sole basis of my outlook. Because anger only shows you half the truth. And in the material blind spots is where radfem transphobia comes in. Trans people might not always be the main enemy, but they are the more vulnerable one. While we should oppose terfs, especially the active propagandists who want us dead, it is important to understand how young women get swept up in that ideology. And hopefully through that, we we can try to prevent that rabbit hole.
