No, okay, actually I am going to write this rant.
The rupaulification of drag has directly contributed to why Chappell Roan is getting so much backlash for having basic boundaries.
Do y'all realize that one of the original ideas behind drag personas was that people could entirely separate their "real" (out of drag) life from their drag life?
It used to be unsafe to do drag. It used to be illegal. You could very easily be murdered for it, and nobody would even care because it was so stigmatized. Drag personas gave performers the much needed separation and safety between their two worlds. So long as nobody knew that Charles in accounting moonlit as Miss Betty Cocker, his job was safe.
Even in modern live drag you rarely see anything that breaks the immersion. Putting on and taking off drag happens backstage or at home. Performers exclusively go by their stage names while around audience members. Even the ones with social media followings who *do* share their non-drag names will ask fans to call them by their drag name exclusively (Trixie Mattell has said this before - the only people allowed to call her by her birth name are her parents and her lover).
But RuPaul, in seeking to spotlight the often unseen and unknown culture of the drag (and queer) community, simultaneously put queen's non-drag lives in the public eye as well.
Suddenly it's normal (when watching the show) to see Trixie labeled as "Brian" while in confessional. It's normal to see performers in their sweats and no makeup prior to performing. And it's normal for that part of their reality to be broadcast for public consumption.
As a dancer, let me give you a brief look at a show day for me. I'll show up to the show venue 2-3hrs before the show starts, wearing sweats or leggings, hair in a messy bun or ponytail, no makeup, with a bunch of bags.
In that 2-3hrs I'll warm up, do my hair and makeup, get into my first costume, and practice anything I want or need to review. The preparation for this is not inherently glamorous. It's work. It's a large mental load preparing to have an entire room full of people to look at you - especially when they've PAID to do so.
I don't want to be bothered during that prep time by anything that isn't directly to do with the show, because I'm focused on doing what I need to do to put on a good show, the same way any athlete has to "get in the zone" before a game. Would you expect to chat with Simone Biles 10min before she's about to take to the beam? I certainly hope not.
In the same way, RuPaul began televising that preparation process - what used to be relatively private time with friends and colleagues is now as much of a performance as what happens on stage.
So how does this relate to Chappell?
It's the same principle.
"Chappell Roan" is a drag persona. That's not her name at the grocery store, nor is it how she dresses to do so.
In the same way drag used to allow Charles to step into the office and be unknown as Betty, Chappell has attempted to follow in that tradition. And, outside of RuPaul, that's still how drag works. If you go to your local drag scene, you likely will never know who Sexon Thebeache is out of drag. You'll probably never know her name, what she looks like, or what she does for work outside of drag. Because that's how she wants it, and that's what's normal in the culture.
But because Chappell has taken her drag to "RuPaul" levels of publicity and notoriety, people feel entitled to engage with her in the same way RuPaul promotes engaging with the queens on Drag Race.
So when Chappell says "I don't want to take selfies when I'm not in drag", fans take it as a personal attack because there is no longer a respect for that separation of "drag" and "not drag". That line has been blurred on tv and online - where most people engage with most or all of their drag consumption - and thus the line irl has also been blurred.
It's not normal to know every single minute of someone's life. Taylor Swift is just as much at fault, and I could write a whole other rant on that.
It's long past time people take a hard look at their parasocial relationships and start trying to see celebrities as *people* instead of names that sing or act.
Let celebrities have their boundaries. They already get so few in the industry - basic human decency shouldn't be an expected sacrifice just because a lot of people like what you do.

hiiii could i have an arcane matchup?
i'm agender (they/them, but feminine terms/titles are fine by me) and queer (STRONG preference towards women), and i'd prefer a romantic matchup but platonic works fine as well. i'm 5'5" (average height queen), i have curly, black, shoulder length hair and bangs. sometimes i straighten my hair if i have the time and energy but usually i just leave it natural. i have fairly pale skin with slight pink undertones, and a few freckles on my nose. my eyes are mostly blue with a little bit of green (my mom used to say i had some gold specks in there so idk what color they are really tbh). i have a pretty casual/somewhat athletic style, since my job does require me to be active, but i accessorize to high heavens with necklaces, bracelets, earrings, and any ring i can find, pretty much. i try to look as androgynous as possible at any given time.
a basic list of my interests: animation, digital art, creative writing, acting, broadway, theater tech (such as running lights/sound/spotlight, being a stagehand, just all of the cool backstage stuff), painting, cosplay and costume making is a BIG one, really anything artsy.
now the weird interests that don't really fit into the above category: roller coaster mechanics/accidents and how to avoid them, herpetology (mainly snakes but other reptiles as well), self defense, airports (not anything specific about them, i just really like the environment in airports)
i really like music! music is a HUUUUUGE part of my life. my favorite style personally is fast paced punk rock kinda style, but any sort of alt rock fits my vibe. i really like MSI (the music, not the people themselves, screw those guys), and some various songs by FOB, The Used, Pierce The Veil, Destroy Boys, etc. I do also love music of other, more undefined genres. I'm absolutely in love with Panic! at the Disco's Vices and Virtues album, specifically Sarah Smiles and Nearly Witches. And a few other songs/artists here and there (like will wood? and jack stauber) but those are my main ones. Sharing music I like is such a big deal for me in literally any relationship.
Speaking of relationships! My love languages are mainly physical touch (receiving) and acts of service (giving). But other "love languages," or just little things that I do with people I'm comfortable with are: rant about my interests/try to get them into said interests, sharing music (like i said), sharing memes and things that remind me of them, and (here's a really niche one) making cosplays of their favorite characters (if applicable, there are some cosplays i just can't do). the way i love is just pure devotion. if i'm in a relationship with someone, they are my everything, i would do anything for them.
i'm an enfp, 6w7, i'm extremely outgoing and have a tendency to strike up conversations with random people. i'm a performer, an actor, everything is a performance to me. i'm an incredibly artsy person, constantly creating something (mainly in the form of writing or physical art/drawings and sketches). my humor is very much just one-liners that are kinda hit or miss, depends on the audience. i understand very well the concept of masking who you are for the sake of acceptance, progress, etc. in public, i'm a completely different person, putting on somewhat of a professional, agreeable front for the sake of getting people to like me. i'm a performer with connections, i know the right people and they'll give me a huge advantage in my future as i try to get where i want to be. i'm not afraid to abandon some ideals and morals to get there. this is not something i'm proud of.
i'm neurodivergent, but incredibly good at masking it. when i'm around the right people, it's obvious, but i don't usually let myself unmask in public. to really know me is to know two different sides of me. anyway, i'm surprisingly organized. i have a meticulous morning routine (i'm a morning person through and through) that requires me to wake up two hours early every morning, but i don't mind (even though i don't really sleep). i get easily overwhelmed specifically by temperature. if it's too hot, i shut down, it makes it hard to function. i'm also somewhat prone to anxiety attacks, and i have bad paranoia, so it takes me a while to really trust someone.
i think my main personal struggle is that i focus on other people more than myself. relationships tend to feel like a sacrifice. i will abandon my own mental and physical health if it means helping someone that i care about (or someone who makes me feel validated but thats a different story). i'm also an incredibly hard worker, so much so that getting things done tends to be my main focus, even over essentials like eating, sleeping, showering, etc.
is this too much info this feels like too much info sorry if this is too much
Your Arcane match is…

“”Wait, Yel!” You laughed a little louder than you normally would when the tiny blonde kept dragging you further forward through the crowd, still feeling a pleasant buzz from all the alcohol you had to drink before you arrived at the concert venue. “We’re missing Kate. And Wanda and Pietro.”
“They’re already at the front with Peter and Shawn.” Yelena squeezed your hand and grinned at you over her shoulder as she kept pulling you after her. “C’mon, spike. What good is having a giant for a friend if you don’t use your height to make people move out of my way?”
“Excuse me for being polite… sorry!” You shrugged uncomfortably when you bumped someone with your elbow, waving when you finally saw Kate bouncing on her toes with the rest of your group right by the stage. “Everyone is gonna hate me for blocking the view.”
“They’ll get over it.” She jumped to kiss you on the cheek then gave Kate a hug. “I’m so bummed Johnny couldn’t come but this is fucking amazing. Maybe we’ll get some spit on us.”
“You’re so weird.” Peter shook his head and beamed at Yelena as he leaned on Wanda’s shoulder. “But I’d let Fandral step on me, so what do I know?”
Everyone started to ramp up to debate who the hottest member of Aesir was, but then the stadium lights went down and the spotlights illuminated the stage and the crowd seemed to hold its breath.
Smoke filled the stage and a single, mournful note from a guitar wavered through the air at the same time the deep throb of a bass drum’s beat began and the crowd went fucking insane. Yel basically climbed you until her legs were wrapped around your waist and she was screaming in your ear when the shadows of five people appeared through the fog. Not that you minded, since you were whooping right along with her.
The guitar started to speed up and everyone got even louder when they recognized the opening notes of “Darling, You Killed Me.” Flashing lights lit up Sif first on the drums, a grin on her face as she spun her sticks through her fingers and winked at the crowd then started drilling out a heavy rhythm that you could feel in your chest. Next was Volstagg on bass, his thick red hair kept away from his face in a braid that swayed with his movements as he started plucking out a rhythm. Then came Hogun on keys, a soaring melody washing over everyone when he began to play. After Hogun, Fandral was illuminated, flicking a blonde curl out of his eyes with a toss of his head and beaming wickedly at the frenzied masses as he gave them a thoroughly dramatic strum of his guitar.
And then, finally, a trio of golden spotlights focused on the lonely mic in the middle of the stage and a sweet, low voice greeted the crowd as the god of a front runner for maybe the biggest band in the world was revealed to the crowd.
“Well, hello there New York. I’m Thor and this is Aesir. How are you all doing tonight?”
Judging from the absolutely wild and unhinged shrieks that filled the air, along with what you were pretty sure were several pairs of panties and a few bras, the answer to that question was insane and horny.
But who could blame them? Every single member of the band was like a god, mysterious and otherworldly and charming in all their leather and metal, with intricate braids in their hair and tattoos covering their skin. Just the chance to touch one of their boots had the throng of fans behind you pressing you into the stage until Yelena and Pietro gave them a pair of intimidating looks.
As gorgeous and unattainable as the rest of the band was, the main object of everyone’s attention and obsession was definitely the massive, built, gorgeous lead singer and guitarist, Thor. He was the only thing you could look at, that deep voice making you shiver and your dick get half hard every time his eyes seemed to focus on you.
Which was such a weird thought. He couldn’t see you. He couldn’t see anything with all those lights on him. You were just way too drunk and maybe a little moony from being this close to your biggest celebrity crush.
All through the rest of the show you just kept watching him, smiling like a goddamn lunatic until your cheeks ached. It was probably… no, it was definitely the best night of your life, with all of your friends who seem to be just as giddy as you. You all were smiling and shouting nonsense at each other that none of you could hear over the music and the screaming crowd until the lingering notes of the last song died out and the arena lights came back up.
“Holyshitholyshitholyshitholyshit…” you were starting to freak out as you and your friends made your way backstage, squeezing Yel and Kates’ hands while they dragged you along and giving Shawn a nervous grin when the bodyguard unclipped the velvet rope and let your group past. “I’m gonna fucking throw up.”
“You’re not allowed to throw up unless it’s all over a rock god’s dick, spike.” Kate laughed when you spluttered as your face got unbearably warm. “Just enjoy yourself, make some memories to tide you over when you have to go back to writing your damn thesis on Monday.”
You shrugged uncomfortably but couldn’t say anything because all of a sudden they were there. More specifically, HE was there.
It felt like your tongue was too big for your mouth and your jaw was about to hit the floor as you just stood there dumbfounded while you watched the most famous people you’d ever seen in your life greet Yelena and ask about her sister like it was no big deal. You must’ve looked like a moron with your mouth hanging open, not even managing to get yourself even a little bit under control by the time Yel started to introduce everyone, you barely even registered it when she said your name.
“You’re lucky you even got to see him.” Yelena was still talking about you, but all you could focus on was the way Thor’s eyes were practically boring into yours before you dropped your gaze to the floor with a nervous titter. “Always so busy with grad school or volleyball practice, had to drag him here tonight.”
“Well we’re so happy you managed.” There was a very large hand pressed to the wall beside your face all of a sudden and it made your breath catch, just barely peeking through your lashes and trying not squeak when those same intense blue eyes were fixed on your face. “I would have been very disappointed if I hadn’t gotten to see your pretty friend, Belova. What do you want to drink, pretty boy?”
“Hmm?” Was he talking to you? Holy shit, he was… what was happening? “Um, beer is fine.”
“Beer it is.” Thor grabbed a newly filled cup out of Volstagg’s hand and ignored the bassist’s offended grunt as he handed it to you. “You’re quite tall.”
“Yeah…” you decided to stare at the bottom of your cup while you chugged its contents to try to settle your nerves, only vaguely aware of the conversation the rest of the group was having when Pietro let out a boisterous laugh.
“Did little Yelena tell you that I have always been particularly fond of tall boys?” The feeling of his fingers gripping your chin and tilting your face up until your eyes were level with his was making you practically vibrate.
“Nu-uh.” Words seemed to escape you at the moment when you saw his gaze drop to your mouth and licked his lips almost obscenely. You also may have dropped your cup.
“Well I do.” Oh shit, his thumb was tracing over your bottom lip and this could not be happening. “You wanna get out of here?”
“Yes! Yes he does!” Yelena and Kate almost tripped over each other when they rushed towards you and tried to shove you into your jacket before you could even think, beaming between you and the rockstar while your mouth worked silently and your eyes bugged out of your head. “Yes you do.”
All you could do was nod enthusiastically then almost swallow your tongue when Thor wrapped his massive arm around your shoulders and started guiding you towards the door, giving your friends a terrified look over your shoulder while they just gave you thumbs up then went back to talking to the rest of the band. Before you even knew what was happening you were outside waiting for the car to show up and looking at Thor with huge eyes as you struggled to come up with something to say.
You didn’t know what the fuck had come over you. You hadn’t even said a full sentence to the man and you were about to get into a towncar with him and let him fuck you… you didn’t even know where you were going. Oh, his home, he just told the driver to take him home, Jesus Christ. Good thing there was a minibar in the back, you needed something to settle yourself down so you could hopefully enjoy what was about to happen to you.
As soon as you had downed and tossed your second mini bottle of tequila his hand was loosely gripping your neck and he was pulling you towards him, his lips finding your ear and sucking on it while you just let out a truly pathetic sounding whimper as you gripped his shoulders. His breath was warm against your neck and the hand that wasn’t wrapped around your throat was insistent on your waist while he pressed your body against the passenger side door. He smelled like cigarette smoke and leather and clean sweat and you had never been more aroused in your entire life.
“You are so sweet for such a big boy.” He licked your jaw and purred when you flung one of your legs over his lap. “You ever sucked a god’s dick before, love?”
This was going to be the death of you. You were ready to sink to the floor right away and bury your face in his crotch while you humped his boot before choking on what you were sure was going to be the most magnificent cock you’d ever seen in your life. The opportunities for you to suck dick were few and far between. Every single date you had saw how big you were and just started calling you daddy and slobbering all over you. It wasn’t fair, you loved sucking cock.
Of course, if this was going to be your only chance to get in bed with a rock god, you were gonna make the absolute most of the opportunity.
“No.” You wound your arms around his neck and batted your eyelashes as you gave a lewd roll of your hips, feeling flushed from the alcohol and especially bold when he growled at you. “And I’m not gonna tonight unless you ask me real nice.”
He froze, blinking slowly as he stared at you and making you feel slightly panicky when he still didn’t say anything while you chewed on your lip. And then he laughed, a beautiful, warm, booming laugh that made him toss his head back and pull you closer while he squeezed your waist. That thunderous sound made you feel so fucking giddy you almost giggled when you buried your face in his neck, at least until he gripped your hair tight and yanked your head back so he could look you in the eyes.
“You sneaky little minx.” Thor grinned when you gasped as he smacked your ass, tutting when you tried to grind into his lap and pouted at him. “Made me think you were so sweet and shy and pliant. I’m gonna have so much fun with you.”
“Maybe, maybe not.” You groaned when he bit your bottom lip and squirmed when you felt more blood rush to your dick. “You have to be sweet first.”
“Do I now?” Thor grabbed your ass again and jiggled it, growling while he bit along your jaw and licked your throat. “I usually save that for after.”
“Hmm, well I want it now.” The limo came to a stop and you kissed the tip of his nose before climbing out, groaning when his massive hand wrapped around your throat from behind and hit your ear. “Just say please, and maybe I’ll let you feel how tight I am.”
“Brat.” He laughed and swatted your ass again, shoving you into the elevator and beaming at you as he ran a hand through his golden hair. “Alright… please get on your fucking knees and suck my cock like a good boy.”
His voice had somehow gotten even lower and it made you shiver. Without even bothering to check in there were cameras you sank to your knees right in front of him and rubbed your cheek over his incredible bulge that held the promise of something truly monstrous. You were already drooling, your own cock throbbing and leaking as you undid his jeans as you kept looking up into his eyes. It was short work, his zipper coming down in a flash and then your hand reaching in and wrapping around him and…
“Jesus fucking Christ.” Yep, monstrous. “Fuck me.”
“Later.” Thor growled and grabbed the base of the flan python he had been hiding, slapping it against your cheeks until you opened your mouth wide and let him slide between your lips. “I told you to suck like a good boy.”
He didn’t have to tell you twice, your tongue swirling around his velvety head while you hollowed your cheeks and used your hand to stroke his shaft. It was, without a doubt, the biggest dick you had ever had in your mouth. This was confirmed by the ache in your jaw and the way you gagged messily when he shoved his tip down your throat.
Thor hit the brake on the elevator so he could truly enjoy the sight of you on your knees, leaning on the wall and grinning down at you while you slobbered all over him. He groaned when you swallowed around him, reaching down with a deep chuckle and wrapping his hand around your throat so he could squeeze his cock even tighter. The feeling was absolute heaven, it was everything you needed. Your eyes fluttered closed when his hips met your face, your body going lax at the feeling of being used so thoroughly and completely.
“That’s fucking it.” Thor shoved you against the wall and braced his thick thighs on either side of your head, his fingers burying themselves in your hair so he could keep you in place while he fucked your throat in deep, slow strokes. “Oh, you love this shit, don’t you? Mouth off like a fucking brat and then turn into a dumb little baby as soon as you have a dick in your mouth. Bet you wish you could get shut up with cock all the time, don’t you pretty boy?”
As much as you tried to nod, you could barely move your head, not with him holding you tight and his massive cock filling your throat. So you just whined around him, drool dripping down your chin in thin strings and staining your shirt. It was getting harder to breathe, both from the enormous blockage of your airway and from the heady pleasure of finally getting what you so desperately needed.
“Ah, stay with me!” You started when he smacked your face, your cheeks heating up when he laughed richly at your eyelashes fluttering as he started moving just a little bit faster. “You don’t get to pass out yet, love. Now, swallow.”
That was the only warning you had before he was swelling in your mouth and then exploding down your throat. You swallowed as fast as you could, gagging and slurping and moaning while you struggled to suck down every thick and sticky drop he was giving you. It was impossible, though, there was so much. Thor chuckled when it leaked out of your lips around the base of his cock, mixing with your drool in a creamy mess that dripped onto the floor when he started the lift again.
When the doors opened you only had a moment to appreciate the beautiful penthouse apartment before he was dragging you to your feet and kissing you all over again. Your limbs felt too long for this, gangly and awkward when he should just be scooping you up in his arms. But he didn’t seem to mind, squeezing your waist and licking into your mouth while you whined with need.
“Please…” You whimpered when he shoved you into the bedroom and gave you a hickey on your jaw, licking your lips as his hands slipped under the edge of your shirt and touched your bare skin. “I want…”
“Begging like a little slut after giving me so much lip.” Thor nipped at your chin playfully before shoving you back, pushing his hair out of his eyes and strutting over to the bar cart on the other side of the room. “Now it’s your turn to be sweet. Strip for me.”
You opened your mouth to argue but something in the way he looked at you had you snapping your jaw closed again. He just shrugged when you narrowed your eyes, pouring himself a glass of vodka and looking at you expectantly while he leaned on the wall. If he wanted a show, you could give him a show.
Thor watched you pull your cum stained shirt over your head slowly, his eyes widening just slightly once your lean torso was revealed to him. It’s not like you didn’t know how you looked. You were an athlete, you spent a lot of time lifting weights and stretching and you were proud of your body. Especially now when the rock god of your dreams was watching you like he wanted to eat you. For just a second you thought about waiting to take off everything until he begged to see all of you, but you could still taste his cum at the back of your throat, and that blow job had gotten you all kinds of worked up.
Your cock smacked wetly against your abs when you’d removed your jeans and boxer briefs in one smooth motion, kicking them away so you were standing there completely bare while his eyes drank you in. His teeth dragged over his bottom lip while you just teased the head of your cock with your fingertips, his throat working visibly when he swallowed another mouthful of vodka before he growled at you in a husky voice.
“There’s lube in the bedside table.” He started sipping his drink again when you opened the drawer and gasped at the toys that greeted you. “Ah, those are for later. Put that ass in the air and open yourself up for me.”
“Fine.” You poured a little when you got on all fours on the bed, resting your cheek against the cool comforter and spreading your legs so your rock god could see your tight little hole winking at him as you spread the firm cheeks of your ass. “But I don’t like a lot of prep.”
That made him growl, the noise sending a vibration through your body even from across the room as you smeared lube all over your fingers. When your first finger slipped inside of your tiny asshole you couldn’t help but whine, slowly swirling it around and plunging it in and out while you did your best to make slutty noises. You could tell they were working, could hear his breath getting faster and heavier as you stretched your hole. The second finger made you gasp, a shiver running up your spine as you scissored yourself open as you heard the sounds of Thor getting undressed behind you.
“That’s enough. God, you really are a dangerous little minx.” Thor smacked your ass once before pressing kisses along your spine, reaching to grab a condom and rolling it over his length while you panted underneath him. “Gonna turn you inside out, boy.”
“No… just a sec.” You sat up and shoved him back, giggling when he gave you a look full of indignation at you pushing him away. “I wanna ride that fucking monster. Lemme feel it in my throat, please.”
“Fuck… dangerous.” His grin was splitting his face in half when he flopped back on the bed, a rich laugh shaking his chest when you scrambled on top of him and straddled his waist. “You’re a fucking show off. Alright, lemme see you work that boy pussy, love.”
Him calling your asshole your pussy had you clenching so hard you were worried all your prep might have been in vain, not that that was going to stop you. You looked into his sharp blue eyes as you reached behind you to grip his thick cock, your entire body shivering when you lined him up and started to slowly sink down on him. Just the tip had you practically seeing stars, a choked off sob escaping from you without your permission as you circled your hips to get used to the stretch. An inch at a time, you made sure to keep breathing deeply, scowling at him when he slapped you and told you to hurry it the fuck up as he didn’t have all night with everything he wanted to do to you.
“Son of a… motherfucker.” You had to bite your lip to keep from screaming when your ass finally nestled into the dip of his hips, your thighs trembling around his waist while he just looked up at yiu with a pleased smirk on his face.
“Look at you taking all of me, and with just two fingers’ prep.” Thor snapped his hips up and chuckled when you let out a gasp. “C’mon love, work that little cunt like the slut I know you are. You begged for this, now fucking take it.”
You might have called him an asshole, since he did give you ass a rather vicious slap, but you started moving. This… this was exactly what you wanted. He was hitting you right where you needed as you ride him, a sultry moan leaving your lips as you started to find a rhythm that made your eyes flutter. Before you knew it you were riding him in earnest, bouncing up and down on his cock wildly and tossing your head back so you could pant and whine as you braced your hands on his thighs. Your own cock was bouncing too, leaning pearly rivers of precum all over his abs that looked like they were sculpted from golden marble.
When his fist wrapped around your dick you screamed, shaking when your cum exploded out of you without warning and hit him in the face. You wanted to splutter out an apology but then he was sitting up and all you could do was squeal, gasping when he kissed you obscenely and made you taste yourself on his tongue.
“Messy fucking boy, knew you were a little slut.” You never thought you would love being called a whore and having your asshole called a pussy while you were full of dick, but here you were. Maybe it was because he had suck a warm smile on his face while he said everything. “We’re not even close to being done, love.”
“Yes… shit!” You cried out when his hands gripped your waist and he started moving you his own damn self, wrapping your arms around his thick neck and clenching your teeth as his cock completely rearranged your guts in the most delicious way. “Fuck my little pussy, make me fucking take it.”
“Yeah, there’s my dirty boy.” Thor sucked on your neck when you sobbed for him, groaning when he felt your dick getting hard as it rubbed against his stomach. “Gonna ruin you for anyone else, may just have to keep you as my slutty little pet, would you like that?”
“Yeah… mmhm.” You hiccuped when he licked your throat, your breath getting punched out of your lungs each time his thighs smacked against the curve of your ass. “Wanna be fucked all the time.”
“Know you do, baby, I’d take such good care of you.” He slapped your ass and nipped at your collarbone. “Make you so fucking stupid, just my dumb little baby.”
He kept talking like that, driving your body up and down on his cock like it took no effort at all even as you were covered in sweat. You weren’t sure how much time had passed, but pressure started building in your balls and in your core and as soon as he told you to come you were doing it with a bitten off yelp. Thor grinned when it happened, kissing you again and shoving his tongue down your throat while your brain went to some sweet, fluffy place that you found you enjoyed very much.
Then you were on your back, somehow. You didn’t totally remember how you got there but when you looked up your rock god was leaning over you and grunting while he slammed his cock into your sensitive little hole, and that was a sight and sound you found you enjoyed very much. It was disappointing that I find that you didn’t have the strength to wrap your legs around his waist like you wanted, but he didn’t seem to mind and you were still getting the life fucked out of you so it only bothered you for a minute.
“Greedy fucking boy, what’s that, three?” Thor chuckled when a thin drool of cum leaked from the tip of your cock when you came again unbidden, groaning when you squeezed him even tighter and made his eyes roll back. “Yeah, Jesus fuck you’re good. Such a pretty little slut. Fuck, I can’t wIt to fuck yiu raw? Bet you love being full of cum.” He barked out a laugh when you nodded eagerly. “Knew it. Bet you’ll let me take whatever I want whenever I want, pretty thing. Oh my fucking god, this little pussy is so fucking tight. Shit… ah, fuck!”
Thor leaned down and bit your neck when he throbbed inside you, grunting while his hips stuttered against your ass and he filled the condom. You couldn’t take it anymore, the pleasure of having been used so thoroughly sending you to nirvana as you wailed and your poor cock twitched feebly against your abs while you blacked out. He kissed you when you just mumbled stupidly while your eyes rolled in your head, making sure he was very careful when he pulled out so he didn’t overwhelm you.
“That’s it, what a good boy.” Thor smiled when you purred in response and stretched your whole body, a look of absolute bliss on your face while you gave him a sloppy grin before he headed to the bathroom to fill the tub. “Oh yeah, think I’m definitely gonna have to keep you around. May even introduce you to Carol when she’s back in town.”

101 ways not to say I do please :)
prev | 101 Ways Not to Say I Do | WW 13.3.2024
Andrew refused to let a single muscle in his face move. He refused to let himself react to the idea of having any kind of event where his relationship with Neil would be at the core. It had been years since that fateful day when the first spotlight had landed on their relationship, and he'd never wanted another to come across it. But if he wanted to be with Neil—a decision he contemplated every morning Neil woke up at five for a run—then there were certain points of their relationship that he simply had to get used to. And being one of the few queer athletes to have made it onto a national playing field meant that their private life didn't get to keep as much of its privacy as Andrew would have liked.
But every time he looked into those goddamn gorgeous, intelligent, and fiery blue eyes, he knew it was a discomfort that he'd simply have to live with.

What do you think is (or would have been) more divisive in the Kaylor/Gaylor fandom? The current Tayvis PR we are living through, or Taylor lavender-marrying and "having kids with" Joe?
God, novel incoming—I think because Joe was such a slog time-wise, many of us felt it may never end! That maybe this was her decision to just Beard with one guy forever. Her dumping Joe was an absolute shock—I remember being so excited for her thinking she was finally ready to quit Bearding…..annnnd then came MAYhem with Matty and that was very WTF, but thankfully only lasted a month
Fast forward to today—and an insane PR push/deal with the NFL, a world tour, tour movie, all in the company of a well known, loves to be in the spotlight athlete. Again we see Taylor making herself small for a dopey ass man, handing over her power, letting him siphon off anything he can from her charisma, talent and fanbase
I never thought I’d miss Joe in a million years, but his nonproblematic mind his own business leave me alone ass was truly a blessing in disguise—but what didn’t the Toe relationship get her? The global power she has today —the world wants to see her in a relationship with a man out and about doing coupley things. Celebrities are Americas version of The Royals and she is giving the public what they want—even while making a whole ass tour with visuals about Burning down the past decade of her work and not truly being seen
Tumblr media
TLDR—today, I think we would accept a Toe lavender marriage more easily than prior to the TK Bearding with the qualification being that she continued to queer flag in her art—we would know she wanted to stay closeted for good
I honestly have no clue what April 19th is gonna bring in that regard 😅

sophie thatcher. demiwoman. she/they. queer.  — hey, isn’t that sadie wicker? i think that the twenty three year old from seattle, washington works as a barista at the chinchilla computer cafe & a secondary rhythm guitarist for vain rogues & the ghost orchestra while studying part-time at the university of alaska, but outside of that people describe them as a paradox borne of a cookie-cutter home, the wasted youth hitchhiking cross-country following rock band tours, naiveté dripping like neon, disregard for the easy and the obvious, getting high under the spotlights, a floor-drobe and posters for wallpaper, derealization in the face of a computer monitor. i hear they are auspicious & flaky, but they are also known to be experimental & motivated. consider giving them a visit at their home in the kingpin trailer park and get to know why they’re called the fresh blood. written by  cat, she/her, est.
Tumblr media
profile. pinterest. ( under construction )
tw: implied violence, mention of slight eating disorder, mention of drugs and overdose
present.
maybe it's the café, learning sick new latte art — maybe it's the band that after all these years, sadie's still star-struck landing a stint with — maybe it's armful of textbooks stacked beside a dingy public keyboard. whatever the reason, it's been altogether too long since they've taken off on the kindness of interstate strangers with all their savings spent on metallica tickets. there's always the next tour.
sat side by side in the living room of their trailer home are two of their prized possesions: an oldie radio tuned to 107.5 black dragon pearl and a record player. at any given time, day or night, home or away, one will be on. there's something about the constant noise filtering through the small collection of rooms that makes living alone a little less lonely.
voluntarily on a specific call list for activists, and often on the front lines. perhaps surprisingly for the 5'3'' figure, sadie is quite the little athlete and avid to go charging into the most raucous of riots in order to protect their fellow protestors — catching flares or gas canisters, and dragging away comrades should they fall under police boot.
when sadie announced moving away for college ( and whether that was the true reason or not at the time ), her father was kind enough to pass over the keys belonging to a brown 1971 dodge coronet. it had been a project of his that he felt was time to have a new owner. it is sadie's baby, self-taught how to care for it and repair. call her an amateur mechanic, she'd love it.
a jack-of-all-trades amateur following the car, sadie also enjoys cooking. and it's a whole ordeal, the perfect depiction of how spaghetti can become a whole affair. the sauce splatters, the multiple utensils piling up in the dinky sink, making enough for a large family. at least the effort to combat cockroaches is there in cleaning up the mess, though by no means are they a tidy person.
big on cycling through hair colours. the style remains relatively the same, with the only difference in the length of the shagged bob framing their face. otherwise, given the season, the bleached blonde becomes auburn-red, and when she becomes convinced her roots actually look pretty, will delve into the natural chocolate of their hair.
past.
comes from a perfectly adjusted family. an unexpected gift seven years after her older brother, sam. their parents are an accountant father and a florist mother, who are... nice. that's just it. they're nice, her brother is sweet but distant, and sadie is bored. there's not even any friction in their daughter becoming an anarchist to liven up their suburban seattle home. when sadie was first arrested for participating in a protest against big oil, her dad patted her shoulder and her mother smiled pleasantly when they collected her.
grades were acceptable, their friend group outsiders but hardly trouble-makers, and music was becoming the most exciting thing in sadie's life. it was harder then to travel around, so garage concerts were her bread and butter. at one such event, in a dark and damp little basement, they were elbowed in the mouth by a drunken reveler that knocked out her right lateral incisor. sadie thought it would be cool to have the gap. her parents happily had a fake one implanted. still a cool story.
between the constant influx of music and all its genres that captivated her, attending as many shows as she could and planned to in the future; it was kismet that her brother gifted her one day after his first big paycheck as a paralegal with an ebony and ivory gibson guitar and a stack of manuals. practicing took up all her time and effort, which ironically was the reason she started smoking — as an appetite suppressant so that she could keep idolizing her band heroes and try to live up to their glamour.
the one great trauma of her life ( so far... ), came at a concert she tagged along to with a friend, the friend's older sibling, and some friends in san francisco. there, fighting her way to the venue bathrooms, sadie came across a person draped over a toilet while people laughed about the "wrecked" state. it only took a glance to realize this person was in dire straits. even as sadie begged for medical attention, it had only been her that resuscitated the partier from a nearly-lethal concoction of opiates and alcohol. they pulled through. and sadie added big pharma to her list of oppressors to scream in the face of.
subject to change.

I get how the “secret relationship” stuff in reputation is going to appeal to queer people, because straight people outside of the spotlight don’t have to hide their relationships (unless you’re in a Romeo and Juliet situation I guess). But we know Taylor was dating Joe and we know exactly why she was hiding.
I get relating to a lot of the themes of the album as a queer person, but I don’t get why people need that interpretation to be the “correct” or “real” one. You can relate to the album even if Taylor wrote it about a man, your interpretation can be different from Taylor’s
This is exactly what I said dude. There is no such thing as a correct interpretation of art. There is what Taylor was thinking about (usually autobiographical although she does fantasize and make stuff up because again, she is not a dick powered jukebox). There is what you think about. Things we think about when listening to her songs can change over time (as I said, this applies to what Taylor thinks about them too because it is HER CREATIVE WORK). I guarantee you End Game is giving her a little thrill now that she’s with a professional athlete but she didn’t write it with him in mind.
An interpretation is just that - one way to read something. It’s not limited to sexuality btw like people read things differently all the time. I’ve shared this before: CLM is like the most romantic song I’ve ever heard FOR ME. My current situation actually fits that really perfectly. I played it for my bf a few months into us dating expecting him to love it and he found it depressing and tragic. He didn’t get the romance at all. He didn’t hate the song as like… a song lol like he thinks it’s pretty but he fails to see how it’s romantic. That same day - we were sharing like what our most romantic song is about the other person because it was early days and we were vom cute ew 🤢 - he chose Patience by Guns ‘N Roses and I had the same reaction. Like, cool song ngl but I don’t get how it’s like a grand statement on romance. Idk what the fuck Axl was thinking when he wrote Patience (I suspect very little because he would’ve been high as shit but ok) but for my bf that’s like the grandest statement on love and fits us and for me it’s a little confusing and tbh it sounds like they’ve broken up when he’s singing it??? And that’s his same point on CLM lol. So like yeah people interpret things differently guys. This is what I’ve been trying to say.
Saying “I pick up queer themes in Dress” is fair play. Saying “Taylor didn’t write Dress about Joe, she’s a big fat liar who lies, it’s about supermodel Karlie Kloss- no wait it’s about supermodel Lily Donaldson because there’s a picture of them at a party in a bathtub with like 50 other people and she mentions that public moment in her song and ergo this song is about Lily/Karlie/the homophobic violinist from her first band and who cares what it means to me because I never go outside but Taylor is gay and this is the proof” is just unhinged.
Also there are a host of other reasons to want to be secretive in mf relationships other than Romeo and Juliet or super famous vibes just btw. Hookups within friend groups or intermixed friend groups often have to be kept on the DL. Hookups at work - unless it’s proven to be serious - should be kept on the DL. Dating while in the midst of a divorce or serious longterm breakup has to be kept on the DL. If you’ve got kids, dating has to be kept on the DL unless you’re a messy bitch who lives for drama or until you know it’s serious. Reconnecting with exes has to mostly be kept on the DL until you know it’s serious. I can go on. Being gay or being in a truly forbidden situation aren’t the only two valid reasons to want to know places you won’t be found.
Any of those situations could have you relating to Dress. The best friend stuff makes it sound a bit gay to me (someone who has hooked up with a number of her female friends) but that’s not the only interpretation nor is it factual. It’s also not invalid.
My last thought is like… as fun as muse analysis is, I like Taylor Swift because she articulates thoughts about MY LIFE better than I can. I don’t imagine Taylor and Joe or Taylor and Jake or Taylor and Harry or Hiddleswift or whatever when I listen to my favorite songs. I imagine my own life. That’s what I love about her. It feels like she’s articulating feelings and experiences I’ve felt better than I ever could yk?

Is that LENNON KENT? A JUNIOR originally from NEW ORLEANS, LA, they decided to come to Ogden College to study LITERATURE. They’re THE NEPO BABY on campus, but even they could get blamed for Greer’s disappearance.
PINTEREST // PLAYLIST ( coming soon! ) // VISAGE
⟡ CHARACTER INFORMATION ⟡
FULL NAME: lennon margot elise kent AGE: twenty-one BIRTHDAY: june 4th ZODIAC: gemini PRONOUNS: she/her SEXUALITY: bisexual HOMETOWN: new orleans, louisiana & los angeles, california
+ social, playful, creative - manipulative, impulsive, nosy misc. skills include convincing you she’s telling the truth with her fingers crossed behind her back, getting her way, convincingly copying your homework but not too much and reading 100+ pages in an hour.
⟡ CHARACTER INSPIRATION ⟡
ashley banks ( fresh prince of bel-air ) / heather chandler ( heathers ) / cher horowitz ( clueless ) / kat edison ( the bold type ) / taissa ( yellowjackets ) / serena van der woodsen ( gossip girl )
⟡ THE NEPO BABY ⟡
MOTHER: betrophia elise kent – actress / movie star FATHER: kingston kent – retired NBA allstar player, author of two self-help-esque books ( currently writing a memoir ) Everyone loves Lennon. Or so, that’s what she wants you to believe. Born to a professional athlete for a father and a movie star for a mother, Lennon Kent hasn’t worked for a single ounce of attention in her life. Well, except for that of her parents, of course. With a doting nanny and friends who wanted to be captured in her spotlight, the young woman seemed to be surrounded by the kind of fame and attention that everyone yearned for. But alone, at home, when no one else was around, people had little reason to love her or find her worthy of their affections. Turning to literature and falling in love with stories that kept her mind far from Hollywood life would be the only thing that kept her from losing every ounce of sanity as a child. Even with all of the money and fame, perhaps especially with all of the money and fame, Lennon finds herself lonelier than ever.
That doesn’t mean, however, that Lennon hasn’t learned to use the outward attention to her advantage. She will bask in her spotlight for as long as she can, often finding herself thrown off of her game when someone in her circle is given more of a glance than she is. She uses her mother’s success and her father’s career to rope you in, hoping her curated persona keeps you around. The hardest part, however, is that beneath it all, she just wishes someone would love her for exactly who she really is.
⟡  OGDEN COLLEGE ⟡
YEAR: junior MAJOR: english literature EXTRACURRICULARS: Tennis - Singles // Queer Alliance // Book Club
⟡ GREER MORRISON ⟡
RELATIONSHIP: Greer’s Roommate
Everyone always talks about how they wish their roommate would get hit by a bus, for the free tuition or the guaranteed passing grades or the absolute lavished attention one receives when something terrible happens. Lennon might have wished it for other reasons, but when Greer disappeared, her heart all but shattered in her chest. This is the one person who seemed to know just how fucking hard the mask was to keep securely in place at all times. Throughout their friendship and subsequent living arrangement, the pair had gotten to know one another like no one could even imagine. Lennon had even begun to see the moments when Greer almost released the white-knuckled grasp she kept on her public image. It is, of course, worth noting that no one knew Greer like Lennon did. Knows Greer like Lennon does… whatever, the point is that her secrets were scrawled on the inside of Len’s mind as much as her own. She saw so much of what went on in her life that her opinions of people changed quicker than the seasons. All she wanted was for Greer to share things with her rather than her having to find them out herself. Over and over again, she proved to keep the mask on more often than not. Would it have killed Greer to want to be as close to Lennon as Lennon wanted to be to her?

journey: esse est percipi.
tomorrow's my bday ... crazy. and funnily enough today is the first day of the month safar in the islamic calendar. life is truly strange
today i want to talk about my self-worth and existence and how bumpy of a ride it has been and still is. it's one of the main things i struggle with. it's well. yknow
anyways lets get to it. dw this is the last one lol
Tumblr media
i was born. that much is obvious.
when i was younger, obviously i didn't dwell on my existence much. i was a kid, and so all i had to do was play and throw temper tantrums. not that i did the latter - my mom has told me how i was always such a quiet child, and some part of that still rings true now; only i'm no longer a child, although sometimes i feel like one.
i didn't care other kids my age were being sent to tuition or piano classes or being praised for their innate talents. i was content with being simply me, the only extent of me caring being me and my siblings being forced to go to Quran recitation classes, our parents knowing full well we won't ever read it if we just stayed at home.
even when i entered primary school, nobody stood out, and neither did i. if i ever did, it would be because i was a "smart kid", despite there being others who were like me. outside of being a mostly straight A student, i did not matter. and i was grateful for it. i live a normal life with a normal family. i'll grow up to be a normal person, the only thing not normal about that person's life being their job, high-paying and successful.
but then i entered secondary school - a school my mom teaches at. when i was younger and my mom would take me to her school at times, i was amazed by the collection of books the school library had. i thought to myself i want to attend that school no matter what. but by the time i actually enrolled, it was more because having my mom there would make things easy for me; and that i'd get insider knowledge.
that school, as it turns out, is a cluster school of excellence - a high-achieving school, with high-achieving students. i was surrounded by students who weren't only academic geniuses, but multitalented people who seemed to be able to do anything. if they aren't academically-inclined, they would be athletic stars. and i was there, a small existence, with nothing going on for him.
i can't actually get straight As. i can't run fast. i can't play the guitar. i'm not leader material. i can barely talk. and at that moment,
i wondered why i existed when all these amazing people can do the existing for me.
when i stood out at school, it was rather like a sore thumb rather than like an actor standing under the spotlight on stage. i was a teacher's child and a "girl" at that - that alone deserved attention apparently. but i never wanted to be my mom's child or a dating/marriage candidate.
i never wanted to be.
i tried not to stand out. i was the same quiet kid you knew from primary school, who speaks with his grades rather than words - only that my grades seemed to speak profanities. you can tell how that contributed to how i perceived myself.
and then i had to figure out that i'm queer and how nobody else seemed to think the way i do.
it's as if i'm destined to be isolated.
and i've definitely wrote such things in my many, many journals - how i was born a cursed child, my destiny is to be alone and lonely forever, that not even loneliness is my friend. a bunch of theatrics, looking back on it now, but those feelings were real.
unknowingly, i developed an inferiority complex. but it wasn't as if i was unhappy - but i wasn't particularly happy too. i existed simply because my mom told me to and i didn't want to get yelled at. there were the small things in life that made it bearable but ultimately, they end up making me feel small too.
i wish i could say that the thoughts resurface less nowadays but that would be a lie. they're still there, lurking in the corners of my brain, ready to pounce on me the moment i try to function within a society.
"why bother existing when other people can do it for you, and better than you ever could?"
sometimes, i feel like i already don't exist. once you shrink enough, though you have the same volume of matter inside of you, you don't have the same volume outside.
the world doesn't see you so you don't exist.
“to exist is to be perceived.”
“esse est percipi.”
george berkeley had a point when he came up with that argument. it certainly is how i feel about my own "existence".
but birthdays.
the one day to commemorate how many years one has been alive, to say "well done, you've survived life this far", to convince yourself that your parents made a mistake, to ask God why He created you.
birthdays sure do remind me that i exist.
many despise it because they hate the concept of aging and some because they never wanted to live that long.
i never hated birthdays. i like the attention that comes with celebrating one. i like using it as an excuse.
i like it because it makes me feel worthy of this life i was given.
it makes me feel like i deserve gifts and presents and well wishes.
it reminds me that the people around me do perceive me, even if they only perceive what they want to perceive.
i feel whole.
i can feel my essence.
i can feel myself filling space in this big, big universe we're in.
i can feel the matter that makes me me.
i like birthdays.
and tomorrow will be my 19th.
19 years of being. 19 years of existing. 19 years of stumbling and falling and getting back up again and crying. 19 years of having being perceived. 19 years of having always filling up space in a big, big universe. 19 years of always having worth.
"why bother existing when other people can do it for you, and better than you ever could?"
because nobody can exist as me, better than me.

Highlights included: “Your Culture as Your Advantage” panel discussed how to navigate career growth and workplace dynamics through the lens of culture, respect and authenticity. Moderated by Dollie S. Bishop, the panel featured Charlamagne Tha God, Ebone’ Almon, Chico Bean and Keri Kelly (Nissan). Charlamagne Tha God encouraged students to stay consistent and follow their dreams. Dollie S. Bishop spoke to students about the importance of professionalism. “Manners will get you where money won’t – I’m a testament. Being professional will get you into rooms that open doors. I haven’t applied for a job since my first internship because not only was I highly qualified, I made authentic connections and was professional at all times.” Nissan’s Keri Kelly talked about the critical importance of finding mentors early in your career. “Look for mentors you have an authentic connection with and form an organic relationship with them. Use those relationships to understand corporate environments and how to navigate corporate culture. Mentors can really help you along the way.” The “Trailblazing Your Post-Grad Journey” panel discussed strategies for setting clear career and personal goals, navigating the post-grad world, and laying the foundation to thrive in long-term success.  Blavity CEO Morgan DeBaun told students to begin building their brands while in school. “When I consider potential hires, I don’t look at their resumes; I look at what they’ve built. Become a master at making things that people want to watch and share and something you’d be proud to show an employer one day.” Gil Beverly encouraged students to focus on building and maintaining relationships as they progress through life and their careers. “Very few jobs are rocket science jobs. It’s really about building relationships and finding people who are willing to take a chance on you. You never know where your next opportunity will come from.”
Brittany N. Cole talked about advocates in the workplace and finding value in rejection. “Make the hiring manager of the roles you don’t get your biggest advocate. Ask for feedback about why you didn’t get the role and implement it. Follow up with them consistently and showcase how you’ve used their feedback to grow professionally.”
Kudos to iHeart for their participation in this event. Maybe some of the other large podcast networks could get on board with similar events and programs?

The Huxleys camp up queer sport for Melbourne Fringe

The Huxleys camp up queer sport for Melbourne Fringe
Shining a queer spotlight on sports, The Huxleys invite you to join them in an interactive art exhibition happening during Melbourne Fringe.
Garrett and Will Huxley struggled growing up as queer creatives in a culture that values sport over pretty much everything.
“We had a horrible experience growing up with competitive sports being queer and not coordinated.” Will Huxley said,
“We were not athletic in any way and always wondered why there couldn’t there be more attention on the creative?”
Melbourne Fringe kicks off on Tuesday (October 1). The Huxleys are inviting you to be a part of The Winner Takes It All.
A grand slam queer takeover of the sporting world that’s part art happening, part grand final and part disco!
“Combining the queer and sporting worlds, we want to capture how it feels to be wearing heels or giant sequin capes for those who may be at odds with athleticism,” The Huxleys said.
“We want to bring things together that shouldn’t necessarily be on the sporting field.”

Be a part of their iconic art
Over two Sundays during Melbourne Fringe, The Huxleys are inviting you to register for one or more days. You get to be a part of a large-scale photographic and participatory art happening, sharing in being part of their artistry and exploring your own as well.
“Normally we do everything ourselves, so at first it was a terrifying idea to invite people into to our process,” Will said.
“What we often wear is challenging and quite ridiculous so involving hundreds of people was daunting, but that’s the fun part about community making this artwork with us.”
You could be an over-eager spectator, sporting star, sporting failure, umpire, mascot, orange slice attendant or more.
Skill level isn’t a factor and as long are you are over 15, you can sign up to be a part of the photo shoot and a community celebration with queer halftime performances and DJs.
“It is so exciting for community with different experiences of sport to be a part of making artwork with us as we combine these worlds,” Will said.
“When we started this project it was on a much smaller scale, but coming together and putting the art into the sport will create something that can’t be ignored.”
There’s a place for everyone
Whether you love or hate sport, it’s a chance to queer up the narrative.
“Using humour, we’re reclaiming what happened to us and repainting that story like sporting heroes,” Will said.
“Many queers have a complicated relationship with sports, while others have joyful stories so we are inviting all to participate in a way that’s special.”
A chance to be a part of sport but not have to be good at it. This free event has shoots involving cricket, footy, swimming and tennis. But you don’t have to wait for the day to get excited.
“While we will have costume elements on the day for some to wear, we want people to get inspired and be as creative as possible in a look that they’ve prepared themselves,” The Huxleys said.
“We will have wigs and masks if they don’t have anything, but we want to inspire people to bring their own flavour.”
Whatever sport means to you, camp up, step out of your comfort zone, celebrate who you are and be a part of something special.
The Winner Takes It All takes place on Sunday 6th and Saturday 12th October. Register to take part here.

'All of Us Strangers feels like the film Andrew Haigh has been waiting to make. Whether it’s his breakout feature, Weekend, or the HBO series Looking, this director is clearly interested in the idiosyncratic, lonely lives of certain gay men. There is a bittersweetness that comes with so much progress won in such little time. While many men are still reeling from the AIDS crisis and institutional discrimination, a new generation of voters has sprung up that takes gay prom kings and same-sex marriage for granted. All of Us Strangers is at its smartest when bringing these truths to light. It’s a little too polished for such raw subject matter, but this tender film deserves acknowledgement for spotlighting an overlooked – but very real – struggle.
All of Us Strangers may borrow its premise from the 1987 Japanese novel Strangers by Taichi Yamada, but it’s a loose adaptation. For maximum delight you should go in knowing as little as possible, but here are the basics: Andrew Scott is Adam, a screenwriter in his 40s just muddling through. His friends have all left London with their partners and children, and he spends his nights watching old TV and downing biscuits. Change presents itself in the form of Harry (Paul Mescal), Adam’s hot neighbor, and a new writing project. But as Adam mines his own youth for material, specters of the past step forward. Literally. Adam begins to spend much of his time with the ghosts of his dead parents, played by Jamie Bell and Claire Foy, who have manifested in his childhood home.
As he grows close to people — or spirits — again, Adam reflects on the culture that taught him to isolate himself. Too old to call himself “queer” instead of “gay” and too young to have spent much of his adulthood worrying about the AIDS epidemic or Section 28, Adam recounts a life colored by mundane discrimination. A classic “sensitive boy” with no athletic talent, he was alienated by peers and even his own father for not being manly enough.
There were seeds of this in Weekend, where the leads debated the drawbacks of flamboyance and blending in, but it’s satisfying to see things spelled out so clearly. With no cultural roadmap for growing up gay, Adam is stuck in arrested development, standing still in a hollow London high-rise while his friends happily embark on “real life.” His rendezvous with the past only emphasizes that inertia.
I’m not saying All of Us Strangers is a film about how sad it is to be gay – just a realistic one. There’s joy to be found in Adam and Harry’s budding relationship and the funny bumbling of Bell and Foy. Haigh’s signature visuals are almost unbearably pretty, with no golden hour left un-filmed. This film celebrates the good and bad of life rather than lamenting it. That’s mostly a lovely thing.
I say mostly because, well, it should be easy to make a raggedy, sad, bitter gay movie in 2023. And yet All of Us Strangers, Haigh’s first feature with a mainstream awards push – also his first with major distribution, via Disney’s Searchlight Pictures – plays nice. We already know Scott can volley from cynical to romantic on a dime (hello, Hot Priest), but while Adam has plenty of reason to be hard-hearted, he hardly acts it. In fact, the one time he does, the universe delivers him a brass-knuckled dick punch that, sure, makes sense for the plot – but still feels downright mean. Maybe Haigh wanted to make a more pleasant gay movie this go-round, but All of Us Strangers is a film that Glen, the sardonic, in-your-face protagonist of Weekend, would probably sneer at.
The film’s pat niceness is most glaring in its final scenes, as Adam’s story resolves in a way that is both too neat and also not really about Adam anymore. There’s nothing wrong with a gay movie with a broad, existential message, but damn. All of Us Strangers spends most of its runtime generating empathy for a guy who has shut himself off from the world, only to visit horrors upon him when he loosens up. Let a gay indulge.
Verdict
All of Us Strangers is all the things that will be trumpeted in its marketing: gorgeous, necessary, poignant. The cast is stacked, the visuals are breathtaking, and the subject matter is important. You’ve likely never seen a movie that tackles the specific loneliness many gay men still face today, and this one is laudable for that alone. However, All of Us Strangers airs on the side of saccharine, especially towards the end, and it would benefit overall from some more human ugliness.'

BACKSPOT WORLD PREMIERE @TIFF_NET Grateful that our truly indie feature has been cleared by SAG & we can finally share the film we’ve been working on for 5+ yrs!
TEXT
Actor, producer and activist Elliot Page has boarded Backspot — a queer cheerleading drama that stars Devery Jacobs and is directed by D.W. Waterson — as an executive producer. The indie film marks a debut feature for Page’s Page Boy Productions and Jacobs’ Night is Y banner, which she launched alongside D.W. Waterson as an LGBTQ+ and indigenous-owned production company based in Toronto. UTA will represent the sales rights to the project. Backspot will see Jacobs play Riley, who along with another character, Amanda, are members of a competitive cheerleading squad as they navigate athletic careers, their budding romance and a cheerleading coach’s antiquated ideas about what it means to be a queer woman in the spotlight.

Sidelines are for sports games, not characters of color
I want to address the somewhat awful job ST has done with its POC characters not just in Vol 2, but over the course of the show. I've done a similar post talking about the queer rep in the show if you want to check that out.
I'm gonna start with Lucas, who's been sidelined from the beginning. I get this is rural Indiana in the 80's and you wouldn't expect a whole ton of POC characters fine fine fine whatever. But if you're going to include exactly one (1) POC main, you better hope to god you do a good job with that character. Look at S1 -- Will was central to the plot in a major way (duh), Mike was huge in pushing everyone to find Will and was well-defined by his close relationship with him, and Dustin's intelligence set him apart even in a group full of so-called nerds. What did Lucas get to distinguish him in any particular way? Nothing much. Even moving into S2 his character remained distinctly less fleshed out than the others
One part of S1 I did very much like, however, was this scene. I thought it was a great way to address the kind of casual racism that people who grow up with privilege can often display, even unintentionally.
Tumblr media
Mike and Lucas had both showed up to school dressed as the ghostbuster Venkman and Mike tried to argue that Lucas should be Winston Zeddemore. Lucas pointed out that Mike only said that because Zeddemore was black, and he didn't want to be Zeddemore because he, like so many black characters in film, wasn't as interesting or influential as many of the white mains.
Ironically, a similar fate ended up befalling Lucas. He began to be drawn more into the spotlight in S2 and S3, but it was more in reference to his relationship with Max than anything else. Listen, I love Lumax (their relationship outclasses Mileven by a mile, argue with the wall) but Lucas needing a relationship with a white character in order to gain real traction within the show and the fandom is pretty fucking shitty.
S4 finally put Lucas' character on par with the others in terms of screentime, lines, and fandom attention, and the Duffers managed this oh-so-impressive feat through the power of... basketball. Come on, I mean really?
Yes, from what we've seen basketball is the fastest path to popularity in Hawkins High (Steve, Billy, Tommy H, Jason) but to make the only black character suddenly a basketball star when he's shown zero interest or athletic ability up until now... it doesn't sit right with me, let's put it that way.
Erica falls into similar black stereotyping as Lucas. We see little development for her over the seasons and from the first moment she's on-screen she's very much the Sassy Black Girl. There's nothing wrong with characters displaying stereotyped traits as long as you can give them other characteristics that define them beyond the typical fallbacks. If your character is essentially reduced to that stereotype, however, it's a problem. All we know of Erica, beyond her never-ending supply of clapbacks and sarcasm, is that she likes DND and My Little Pony. 90% of her lines are full of sass, no matter who she's talking to, and while it's entertaining at times (her calling Murray a bald bastard was funny as hell lmaoo) it can quickly get old. Erica's not the worst black rep I've ever seen, not by a long shot, but the Duffers definitely could've done better with her.
Tumblr media
[Having the only black female character also be a staunchly avowed capitalist feels a little weird to me, but I honestly don't have a way to properly articulate why so I'm not going to go into that rn. Maybe in a later post.]
Watching Vol 2 was a crazy fucking experience for a lot of reasons, but watching Jason and his little basketball cult fully beat up black kids significantly younger than them was... really something. A mostly-grown guy full on rugby tackling a middle school girl with aggression that far outweighed the situation...
You can't tell me there wasn't racial motivation there, but the situation really wasn't handled that way on-screen. It wasn't filmed to really make the audience think about the kind of aggressions (micro or otherwise) that black kids in bumfuck Indiana would experience. It wasn't addressed as racially-motivated. It wasn't addressed at all, actually. Thanks to the racist implications of that moment (and, in fact, the racist implications of Jason's entire attitude towards Lucas & Erica) never being addressed ever, the whole scene came across as more gratuitous violence than anything. I'm not saying the show needs to hold the audience's hand and look in their eyes and spell out J-A-S-O-N = R-A-C-I-S-T, but the S1 Zeddemore scene proved there are ways to intertwine talks about racism into the script, ways to address problems like xenophobia without making it stilted or shoehorned in.
When you show the brutal beating of black children and then move on too quickly for the audience to fully process what happened, it takes away from the heavier implications of such violence.
Moving on from the Sinclairs, we have Kali.
Tumblr media
I liked her character very much, I'm going to be honest. The way she embodied El's angrier, more violent inner voices, with El's return to Hawkins representing her turning her back on that side of her while never truly facing up to it, made her an excellent lens for the audience to see more of El than what we got in S1.
But brown women in media too-often fall into one of two categories.
the docile, meek woman who comes from a patriarchal culture and will always defer to the men in her life, even when it goes against her own desires and dreams
The angry, probably violent woman who rages against the world because she has been wronged in the past
Again, a brown character being one of these two things isn't necessarily bad, but when we're left room for little else around all the resentment Kali's built up? When there's almost no middle ground between the two extremes?? Let's not rely on the old stereotypes over and over and over again, please.
...
Tumblr media
...Did someone say stereotypes? Oh hang on wait it looks like we have another one. I once again feel the need to establish that this is not hate on the character himself, Argyle was legitimately one of the best parts of the California group and I love him with my whole entire heart (& also Eduardo Franco deserves so much better from this shitty fandom).
But the first Latine character on the show being a stoner? That's the best y'all could come up with?? Argyle was funny, he was useful to the plot, and he was a nice foil for the often-serious characters he's surrounded by, but all that being said, I couldn't quite get rid of the nagging irk in the back of my mind every time he was on screen because the stoner Latine character??? At this point, all the blatantly stereotyped characters just make this shit boring and predictable. I don't even have anything new to say about Argyle because it's nothing I didn't just address in terms of Erica, Lucas & Kali.
I feel like the treatment of ST's queer and POC characters is definitely different. We see constant abuse and mistreatment of queer characters without getting any outwardly, happily-queer endings for them; with the POC characters it strikes me more as the typical sidelining and stereotyping that we see in a lot of mainstream media. I'm not going to sit here and argue over which is worse or which is more harmful to audiences, they're both shitty and I'm tired of it all.
Do better.
