Our Own Game Engine!
Remember how Unity almost completely fucked us over last year, just like pretty much every company tries to do nowadays?
I said that my new project is neither using Unity nor Unreal and I deliberately referred to it as "project" and not a game. That's because it isn't a game but our own game engine, written from scratch, without being dependent on any corporate bullshit! 🎉
The Quaxel Engine (Quack + Pixel) is what we, Seven Ducks Studios, will from now on use to create our games. It should become usable by the end of the year and I will post regular updates here!
So, will EE be ported to Quaxel? I'd like to avoid that. Elysian Eclipse is an incredibly complex game, that depends on many very specific features and assets of Unity. Remaking them from scratch would be a massive undertaking. However, if Unity pulls shit like that again, I'd be ready to make this move.
On the other hand, Elysian Mesh, the model generation tool I made for EE, was written to be environment independent and will be integrated into Quaxel, so the engine can use all its features. This way I can also work on Quaxel and EE at the same time! Yay!
Also, Sorry that I didn't post any updates last week. I'm very busy at the moment, as you may have guessed, lol.

Trusova was robbed, end of story.
But yess I love figure skating, the Russians provide so much drama which is entertaining.
Did you watch the world championship this year, and what are your thoughts on ilia malinin? I’ve seen that a lot if people love him but there’s a lot of hate for him as well.
She was robbed of that team medal for sure because they put Kamila in when they knew she wasn’t going to pass the drug test like whyyyyy. As for the routine, who knows if it’s true that they told her not to do the quads 🤷♀️ that could be a bit on her. At the same time, if I were a judge she would won regardless.
The Russians provide soooo much drama like they’re all such CHARACTERS and I love that.
I watched highlights of Worlds not the whole thing. No Russians means it’s just not giving what it’s supposed to give for me. But they could never make me hate the quaxel king. I do get why people don’t like him though he’s kind of an ick like if he weren’t god tier I wouldn’t be rooting for him because his aura is just dusty to me 😂 I’m actually not a male skater gal so maybe that’s why. But I really liked Nathan Chen’s vibe. I think it’s because for me I just like men who are chill. Showboats give me the ick but male figure skaters got that Blades of Glory energy a lot of the time and I just can’t

It was nice and fun to see Ilia doing an Insta live again after a long time. He was a bit tired ( it was obviously late) and i also figured out he's turning from a cute boy to a handsom young man ( his comment about not being single was spot on 😂), people in chat asked weird questions, he was annoyed about the word "quaxel" and answered another weird question with a sarcastic joke which pissed off the woke warriors.
Go outside, touch some grass, get a job, whatever, just don't be constantly online. If you feel you interpret everything people say as "meanspirited", i suggest you to take a break from the internet. ✌

So the thing is I don’t actually like Ilia’s skating very much (aside from the Quaxel, of course, because holy shit) but he is a littol guy and if anything happened to him I would kill everyone and then myself. That’s an exaggeration. But I would hit someone for sure, y’know?

Among my GPF participants there are two to whom my relationship may not seem obvious.
Therefore, I will explain.
Ilya: a growing skater, currently mediocre. Components are overscored. Doesn't have his own style. He is perspective because shows work on 2nd score (that is currently overscored).
And I like to joke incomprehensibly about the fact that “I have feelings for his quaxel” (guess at once what the “jokes” are based on)
But I don’t think that this prevents me from evaluating it; after all, I don’t take this detail seriously (since I’m already burned out and almost hasn't strong feelings about anything of this world).
I see how people periodically pour a bucket of shit on Ilya as if he had raped a child, I think this is fucking overkill. He and his statements are demonized. Ppl are too often find fault with him just to find fault.
Yuma. From the point of view of an abstract training manual, the skater is excellent, he has increased his speed unrealistically, he skates smoothly and evenly, but he is absolutely not my cup of tea. I look at him and see a typical skater from the JNats with no stylistic differences from participants at All Japan from numbers 1-20.
I’ll repeat myself: like a math textbook. Right, true, but not on the list of favorite literature.
I respect attempts to skate something unusual.
Recently I have a trigger for his protocol in comparison with Shoma’s (will not forgive or forget the NHK) so I'll find fault with his jumping.
Do I consider he us overscored in terms of components? Hm. From the point of view of the current interpretation and the quality of the skating itself, now it's isn't.
But I think that judgment is being made in his favor.
Bottom line: Yuma is quite ok. Yuma's scores are NOT ok.

First Look at Quaxel
It is time to reveal the first images of Quaxel, our own game engine!
The foundation of Quaxel has already been finished. It can render both 2D and 3D graphics and also has a simple UI now, including a cool logo, designed by Yoru.
It will be continuously developed over the course of this year until it is stable enough to make our first small game with it. I'll make sure to keep you updated on the progress. For now I'll shift the focus back towards Elysian Eclipse, until I have more to show. ^^

The Quaxel Engine made a lot of progress lately. As you might guess, making a big general purpose engine like Unity would be pretty much impossible as small indie developer. That means the engine will be focused on a specific type of game and only extended when that game, or future games require additional features.
And I've decided to fo focus Quaxel on RPGs! But wait! Doesn't RPG Maker already exist? What's the point of that? Well, as I mentioned before, Quaxel is capable of both 2D and 3D rendering, and I'll be taking full advantage of that. I want to create a Paper Mario like game where 2D sprites move through a 3D world!
But before we can make an actual game with it, there's still a lot of work to do. I'm currently working on a text renderer, that allows you to create styled and animated text, for example for dialog boxes.
Since Elysian Eclipse and Quaxel will have a lot of components in common (e.g. Elysian Mesh), I decided to add Quaxel to the EE Wiki and Roadmap, so you can track the progress in real time!

The hut editor will be the first editor that uses Elysian Mesh, our own tool for procedurally generating 3D models. All the different parts for huts, like roofs or windows, will be made in this tool.
It basically allows us to create highly customizable models directly in the engine, without needing any external tools. A pillar like the ones in the picture can for example be created by just pulling a few sliders, which is pretty cool. It's also much faster than the metaballs, that are used in the microbe and creature editors.
Right now I'm just writing lots of math, so the tool is able to generate complex shapes like arches or tree branches.
Elysian Mesh will not only be used inside Elysian Eclipse, but will also be ported over to the Quaxel Engine, so it can be used as level design tool there. Quaxel itself has made a lot of progress too and I'll be able to share some updates on it in my next post.

Elysian Mesh can now create splines for generating organic shapes like ropes or tree trunks! I'll very soon make another gif, where you can see it in action.
I'm aware that Unity has a spline package that could help with this, but my own implementation is faster and can be easily ported over to Quaxel, so it can be used there too.
