How To Renovate Neglected 200-Year-Old Quarry Tiled Flooring
Here we have a Quarry tiled floor at a property in Tiverton which Is a small village in the West Cheshire countryside with many chocolate box cottages and listed buildings. The property which was built in the 1800’s had been inherited by a young couple who had decided to renovate it and this included the old flooring.
To get a better idea of what was needed I paid them a visit to survey the floor. The Quarry tiles were very old and I suspect originally to the property, they had been badly neglected and had clearly seen a lot of wear resulting in a loss of colour. Unfortunately, it was never going to look like new again however I advised on what could be done to clean them up and put some character back into the floor.
Later that day I sent over a full quote for doing the restoration work which included an itemised list of the products needed. I heard nothing back for five months then got a phone call asking if I could help them as they had been unsuccessful completing the floor themselves. Happy to help a date was arranged to start the restoration of the tiles which had seen more activity since my last visit and now had every kind of builder’s rubbish on them.

Cleaning a 200-Year-Old Quarry Tiled Floor
The first job was to give the floor a good brush and scrape to remove as much of the plaster dust and other contaminates as possible. To do this a strong cleaning solution of Tile Doctor Pro-Clean which is a strong alkaline cleaner stripper combined with Tile Doctor Nanotech HBU. This is a heavy build up remover with nano sized particles to help dissolve and lift the stains out.
The solution was left to dwell and soak into the floor for thirty minutes which gives the products time to breakdown the dirt. Then a small section of flooring was scrubbed with a black pad fitted to a weighted buffing machine. Unfortunately, this had very little effect and clearly something more abrasive was needed to cut through the mess.
To up the ante we decided to fit the buffing machine with a 60-grit carborundum brush and run this over the floor with more water to improve lubrication. This combination did the trick and soon made light work of removing the building plaster, paint and cement from the floor. This process generated a lot of soiling which was rinsed off the floor with more water and a wet vacuum.
Next the floor was given an acid rinse using a mild dilution of Tile Doctor Grout Clean-Up, this further cleans up the tile and neutralises the pH level of the floor after the alkaline cleaning products used earlier.
Sealing a 200-Year-Old Quarry Tiled Floor
The floor was then left to dry out for two days before returning to seal with two coats of Tile Doctor X-Tra Seal to leave a wet look to the stone. This product is oil-based which soaks into the clay tile occupying its pores, this adds structure to the tile whilst preventing dirt from becoming ingrained there. X-Tra Seal is also fully breathable which is an important characteristic when select a sealer for older floors that won’t have the benefit of a damp proof membrane.
Tumblr media
The work took three days to complete and by then end of the job the character had been restored to the floor. Naturally the tiles were never going to look perfect again but I think they suited the period cottage quite well.

No one knows who writes the Hawkins High Tattler. It comes out every week, without fail, has for almost two decades. Everyone reads it, even teachers, even parents. It's caused more the one suspension, grounding, and even--famously--a shipping off to boarding school.
Steve's never let the Tattler get to him much. He's in it, of course, practically a new story every week. But it's just silly gossip.
Of course, Steve is also, currently, the titular Tattler, so. It's not like he's surprised when his name shows up.
It's his third year, his last year, and he knows everything that ever goes on at Hawkins High. It's pretty easy, honestly. Everyone thinks he's ditzy and vapid; nothing more than hairspray and polos. People will say anything around him, assuming he's not listening or not interested, and then bam. It's in next week's Tattler. No one even suspects him.
The confessions locker probably helps. Down by the theater, busted and unusable, the perfect place for people to leave tips, to tattle on their friends (or enemies, as the case may be).
That's what he's doing right now, checking the confessions locker. After 9:30 on a Friday night, the place silent as the tomb, perfect time for it. Pretty standard fare this week. The only thing of interest is that Eddie Munson was the person who broke all Ms. Click's pencils and left the stubs on her desk. This one, he laughs at, can't wait to publish it; can't wait to talk to Munson about it.
He gets a lot of stuff about Eddie. Most of it he doesn't publish because it's bullshit about satanic rituals--the nerdy kids he babysits play dnd, and there's no way Karen Wheeler is letting anything satanic happen in her basement--or about his sexuality, and one thing Steve doesn't do is out people.
Gathering up this week's submissions, he closes the locker with a soft clink, and he swears, swears he hears the squeak of a tennis shoe on the polished tile of the floor. He freezes, heart in his throat. Nobody has been here this late before.
Seconds pass but there's only silence. Confident he's only hearing things, he heads out, the parking lot just as empty as when he arrived.
---
He sees Eddie a few days later, when he's picking up the kids from the arcade. They typically exchange casual greetings, but as Steve waits, Eddie stands with him, offers him a cigarette.
"Read that was you who messed with Click's pencils. Good one."
Eddie shrugs, gives a little bow and a smile. "Happy to be of service."
"It was my class, when she found them. Never seen her so mad."
"No way," Eddie laughs. "Not even when Hagan drew dicks on all the textbooks?"
"Not even then, man. She was throwing pencil stubs everywhere."
"Fuck, sad I missed it." Eddie takes a drag, Steve's eyes following the movement, lingering on his mouth. Something warm and tingling builds at the base of his spine and he forces his gaze away.
"How long you in detention for?"
"I'm not. Swore it wasn't me, and Click doesn't want to admit she reads the Tattler, so. Not much they could do. "
"I've seen it sitting on her desk!"
"I know! She reads it when she has detention duty!"
They lean against Steve's car, laughing, and Steve feels good. This is good. He likes Eddie. He's funny and dramatic and smart and kind. He's not deserving of any of the mean things that get submitted to the Tattler.
The kids come streaming into the parking lot then, and Eddie stubs out his cigarette, says "see you around, Harrington," and Steve finds himself flushing for reasons he can't quite explain.
---
He starts seeing Eddie around way more. He's in school most days, smoking in the parking lot after the last bell, chatting with Steve in the hallways.
It shows up in the Tattler; big news that the King and the Freak are hanging out. Most of the submissions are about it, increasingly elaborate rumors about their supposedly deep, close friendship.
He wishes he could tell Eddie.
Eventually, Eddie invites him to smoke at the quarry. He doesn't hesitate to say yes, doesn't even bother to try ignoring the swoop in his stomach, the speed of his heart.
They sprawl out in the back of the van, Eddie's loud, raucous music pounding around them, sharing a joint back and forth.
Steve gets hazy, boneless, can't stop watching Eddie, the way his lips purse around the joint, his long hair glinting gold in the weak light of the camping lanterns, the pleased shine of his eyes every time he makes Steve laughs.
He likes Eddie so much. Everything about him, honestly. Butterflies ping in his stomach, happy and slow, and he thinks how nice Eddie's lips are, wonders how soft they must be. And he thinks--he's read the submissions, right--he knows the things they say about Eddie, and he wishes it was true, he wants--he wants--
He wants
---
Steve's running late to check the locker. Lost track of time at the diner with Eddie, and it's making him panic.
He stuffs the submissions haphazardly into the pocket of his hoodie, dancing with nerves, willing himself to grab them all and get out.
Locker emptied, he sprints towards the exit. He has a second to process someone barreling towards him in the dark, but he's going too fast to stop, can only brace himself as they collide.
It sends him sliding across the floor, Tattler submissions spilling out of his pocket like snow. He hits the ground, scrabbling for the papers, praying that whoever is here with him can't see them in the low light.
Hands grips his biceps. "Stevie, Steve, we have to get out of here" and there's a second where he's comforted by the familiar rasp of Eddie's voice before terror spikes again.
He pulls himself from Eddie's grasp, searching for any dropped submissions in easy reach. "Wha--why--what's--"
"I ran into Jason Carver and his band of idiots at the gas station. They're on their way to here to try to catch the Tattler in action."
Steve freezes. "I don't--that's not--I--"
In the deep silence of the empty school, they both hear the slamming of a door, a bitten off giggle. Eddie grabs his wrist and they run. Into the theater room, through a door Steve didn't know existed, to the backstage area of the auditorium.
"You should be safe here," Eddie says.
Panic spirals through him. "I can explain. I was just--I forgot a--I needed--"
"Harrington! I know, okay? I already know."
Steve can only blink at him, swallows rough in his throat. "What--Eddie, I--"
"I saw you. Weeks ago. Forgot my notebook in the theater room after Hellfire and had to run back for it. You were there, at the locker."
"You can't tell anyone."
"I'm not going to."
"No, Munson, you really can't. Nobody can know. Nobody--"
"Swe--Stevie, I promise. The secret's safe with me." He rocks back on his heels, chewing on his lip for a second before he continues. " I--I couldn't figure you out, you know? I saw you around with those kids and it didn't make any sense. King Steve, babysitting tiny nerds? But I saw you at the locker and..."
"You're giving me too much credit, man."
"I don't think so. You're never--fuck, Harrington--you're never mean. At least, not in the last couple years. You spread gossip, but you don't punch down, and you're funny as hell. Mean as shit too, but only to the people who deserve it."
His ears burn and he looks down. "Just because I have fucking--fucking editorial standards doesn't mean that I'm anything special."
Eddie scoffs. "Remember, Stevie, I was reading it a year before you were here. Cruel, vapid garbage. Always the most vile, pointless stories about people who couldn't defend themselves. And how many submissions have you gotten about me, for instance, that you've never used?"
Steve clenches his fists. "I would never--"
"I know. Sweetheart, I know. That's why I li--You're so fucking good, Stevie."
He laughs, ears burning. "I'm really not, Eddie. I try to write about fun gossip that can't hurt anyone too much, and nobody's found me out because they think I'm too dumb--"
Eddie reaches out then, fingers connecting softly with the edge of Steve's jaw. He can't help but lean into the touch, eyes flickering closed.
"You don't want to hurt people because you're fucking kind. You know how I know for sure? You must get submissions every week about me, and you've never once printed that I'm--" Eddie stops then, swallowing hard.
Steve's throat goes tight. He rests his hand over Eddie's, still holding his face. "Me too," he whispers. "Kind of. I like--it's both. For me."
"Oh," Eddie breathes, mouth lifting in a bright, beautiful smile that Steve can't help but return.
He's watching, sees when Eddie's gaze drifts his lips, making his breath hitch. He doesn't really think about closing the distance between them, slotting their mouths together in a tentative, gentle kiss.
"You're just full of surprises aren't you, Steve Harrington? Eddie asks when they part.
Steve blushes. "That's sort of the last of them."
"Sure. Next you'll be telling me you've played dnd."
"I have a character."
"What???"
"Human paladin. Dustin worked on it with me. Ready to get out of here?"
"Human paladin," Eddie gapes. "You know--you said--what's happening?"
Steve twines their fingers together, leading Eddie towards the auditorium exit. "Well, first we're going to walk out to my car and then we're going to my house, and we're going to look through Tattler submissions. Maybe makeout a little bit."
Eddie giggles. "What the fuck? Like. What the fuck, sweetheart?"
He turns to face Eddie, smile big and pure and bright with happiness. "If you're really nice to me, I'll let you help write this week's issue."
"Oh, oh. You're going to wreck me." Eddie mumbles, almost to himself.
"If you're lucky." Steve beams.

"You made me mad the other day, you know." Whumper A doesn't look away from the show they're watching as they speak, only offering Whumpee a sliver of their attention despite the sentence pertaining directly to it.
Whumpee feels every inch of its body freeze, breath catching hard in its throat.
Shit.
Shit, shit, shit.
It knew this would come up, and yet it still threw caution to the wind.
Shit.
Shit, shit, shi--
"You went out with Whumber B." Whumper A lets out a sigh, head tiling gently to their right as their hand caresses the TV remote. Their voice is undeniably playful, and yet there's a darkness there. A pure, true anger. "Three times."
"I... I know." The words slip from Whumpee's lips as it's eyes scan the floor, mind racing to find the best course of action to appease the one it had wronged. Should it apologize for its insolence, for daring to spend more time with Whumper B than it did with Whumper A. Break into a repentant speech about seperating its unworthy love between two instead of devoting it to one. Or should it try to bargain? Offer to take whatever punishment Whumper A deemed necessary to correct the betrayal of their wayward quarry without a single argument.
But really, it deserved it. It knew exactly what would happen if it took up Whumper B's offer to go out on chores with xem and it still agreed to join. It was a stupid, worthless, simple-minded, impulsive, selfish piece of shit, and everything it did proved that. Now it was facing the rightful consequences.
A shaky gasp rises not but a few seconds after Whumpee's train of thought came to a full circle, gaze rising from the ground up to meet with Whumper A's and pitch its body as suitable penance for its crimes, before its cut off.
"You never do anything with me, and you know how that makes me feel." Whumper A's show is paused on the frame of someone tossing food in a pan over the stove, fire licking hungrily at the steel. Their eyes are dead pan, the kind of look that could only be described with 'I'm not upset, I'm just disappointed' staring back at the terrified Whumpee.
"I. I-I know, and I-"
"No, don't apologize." Whumper A's head tosses from it's right most tilt to a left leaning angle and their hand pats the couch beside them. Obviously a command to come and sit. "You say sorry way too much as it is."
Whumpee follows the command the moment it's issued, not wanting to make the hole it had already dug for itself any deeper. It's feet cross the floor with wide, long strides, heart beating against its ribs.
As it approaches, Whumper A's smile grows wider, and the look of frustration fading as their Whumpee gets ever closer.
"Just don't do it again. You know how this kind of betrayal has been handled in the past, right my dear?"
Whumpee nods with small, aggressive jerks of it's head up and down before it lowers it's body on to the couch beside their Whumper A, letting them run their fingers down its shoulder and lean their head against its stiff shoulder.
it only had a single thought to push out how disgusting the touches makes it feel. It had gotten off easy.
This time.

The Talon Roost
Nestled along the rugged shoreline of Puget Sound, just outside the bustling heart of Unity City, Terra, Melissa Hazen and Theodora Marten-Steiner’s home exudes a warmth and intimacy that starkly contrasts with their imposing public personas. Known as “The Talon Roost,” this sprawling lodge combines the rustic charm of traditional log cabin architecture with the subtle integration of cutting-edge technology from Terra’s civilian sector.
The Talon Roost sits perched on a rocky bluff overlooking the Sound, its timbered exterior blending with the surrounding forest. Massive, hand-hewn logs form the structure’s frame, their natural grain and texture preserved to honor the timeless beauty of the Pacific Northwest. The lodge’s roof is made up of a mix of eco-friendly solar tiles and living greenery. Wide wraparound decks extend from the main structure, offering panoramic views of the water and mountains beyond. A series of cascading stairs, lined with ambient lighting, leads down to a private dock where a sleek, automated watercraft rests, flanked by kayaks and a small security boat. At night, the lodge glows warmly, its large windows offering glimpses of life inside—a sharp yet inviting contrast to the quiet wilderness outside.
Entering the Talon Roost feels like stepping into a sanctuary. High vaulted ceilings, supported by massive wooden beams, create a sense of openness, while large floor-to-ceiling windows flood the space with natural light during the day. The interior décor balances modern minimalist design with the cozy aesthetics of a mountain lodge. Neutral tones dominate, accented by vibrant greens and golds—an homage to Melissa’s Jade Falcon heritage. The heart of the lodge, the living room, is anchored by a double-sided fireplace made of locally quarried stone. The hearth radiates warmth, surrounded by plush sofas and armchairs adorned with patterned blankets and throw pillows. Above the fireplace, a holographic display can project serene landscapes or serve as an entertainment hub, though it’s often turned off, leaving the room in serene simplicity. The kitchen combines the rustic appeal of handcrafted cabinetry with state-of-the-art appliances. A long central island, topped with polished stone, doubles as a communal dining space. The open floor plan flows into the dining area, where a custom-built table—crafted from salvaged driftwood—sits beneath an impressive chandelier of crystal and wrought iron. A cozy library, lined with shelves of books and historical texts, offers a quiet retreat for both Melissa and Theodora. A vintage mahogany desk sits at the far end, equipped with a concealed holo-terminal for secure communication and work. Nearby, a comfortable reading nook overlooks the Sound, with a soft chair and a small table perpetually holding a steaming pot of tea. The large, lavish, and highly advanced home theater was Theodora's pet project - it is outfitted with the absolute latest in cutting-edge holographic, trideo, and flat screen projection technology as well as a sound system that cost nearly as much as a light BattleMech.
While The Talon Roost appears traditional, its technology is anything but. Discrete panels throughout the home provide instant access to climate control, security systems, and personal AI assistants. The lodge’s power is supplied by a combination of renewable sources, ensuring self-sufficiency even during extended outages. A secure Star League-era communication hub is integrated into the study, allowing Melissa and Theodora to stay connected with SLDF operations. Beneath the lodge, hidden from view, lies a private hangar with bays large enough for both Melissa’s Highlander and Theodora’s Atlas, as well as the company of security 'Mechs on-site. Advanced automated repair systems and diagnostic tools ensure the 'Mechs are always ready for action. Also included is a multi-functional room utilizing advanced Holotank technology capable of projecting tactical simulations, training environments, or serene natural landscapes for relaxation.
The grounds around the lodge are meticulously curated. A path winds through a grove of ancient cedar trees to a private firepit surrounded by log benches. Nearby, a greenhouse houses a mix of local flora and medicinal plants, along with herbs for Theodora’s favorite recipes. A falconry mew, discreetly tucked into the edge of the property, is home to a small cast of Jade Falcons whom Melissa tends to personally—a connection to her heritage and a calming pastime away from the demands of leadership. The Talon Roost’s atmosphere is one of quiet strength and serenity. For two figures as legendary as Melissa Hazen and Theodora Marten-Steiner, the lodge represents a refuge from the chaos of the Inner Sphere—a place to reconnect with nature, their shared history, and each other. The cozy interiors, paired with the breathtaking natural surroundings, create a space where visitors are immediately put at ease, despite the immense power and influence of its owners. This dichotomy—between public and private life, between war and peace—is what makes The Talon Roost not just a home, but a reflection of the lives Melissa and Theodora have built together.
While The Talon Roost exudes an aura of peace and natural harmony, its security infrastructure rivals that of any high-level military installation. As the personal residence of two high-ranking SLDF officers, it incorporates layers of cutting-edge technology, physical deterrents, and personnel to ensure the safety of its occupants and maintain its strategic utility. The property is surrounded by an invisible perimeter system that utilizes advanced motion detection, thermal imaging, and seismic sensors. Any unauthorized entry triggers both silent and audible alarms, alerting the SLDF garrison stationed nearby. Discrete but highly effective automated turrets, hidden in the rocky outcroppings and among the trees, are equipped with non-lethal crowd control measures and high-powered laser weaponry for more extreme threats. Signature reduction technology derived from Null Signature System technology shields The Talon Roost from all but visual aerial and orbital scans, while a squadron of SLDF-designed surveillance drones patrols the airspace and property boundary. These drones are equipped with stealth tech, high-resolution cameras, and lethal weaponry. Meanwhile, the picturesque firepit near the cedar grove doubles as an emergency bunker entrance, reinforced to withstand even orbital bombardment. Decorative stone statues around the property conceal sensors and emitters capable of deploying small scale energy weapons in emergencies.
The Talon Roost is protected by a small, elite detachment of SLDF Royal Black Watch troops. While their presence is unobtrusive, they are always ready to respond to any threat. The guard detachment includes three Stars of MechWarriors, with their BattleMechs stationed in the Roost's subterranean hangar. A company of infantry, drawn from the Royal Black Watch's commando-trained operatives, patrols the property and acts as a rapid reaction force. All on-site security personnel reside in a concealed bunker built into the cliffside upon which the Roost perches. Security details rotate regularly to maintain optimal readiness and avoid becoming predictable. A concealed, automated command center under the lodge handles all security and monitoring tasks. Operatives stationed here can communicate directly with SLDF High Command and deploy additional resources as needed.
Beneath The Talon Roost lies a complex network of subterranean tunnels, elevators, and passageways that connect the property to critical SLDF and Star League installations in the region. This link allows both Melissa and Theodora to access secure meeting rooms or emergency operations centers without requiring surface travel. A direct maglev transit tunnel leads to both the nearby Tacoma Castle Brian, as well as the SLDF's Citadel inside Unity City itself - rebuilt by the SLDF to once again serve as their High Command complex. The headquarters of the Royal Black Watch, Fort Cameron, is linked to the lodge by another high-speed maglev route. The connection allows Theodora to oversee her regiment's activities or deploy her Atlas in minutes. The lodge is also connected via the maglev-tunnel system directly to the Court of the Star League.
In the event of an overwhelming threat, the lodge’s subterranean systems include a concealed evacuation pod capable of transporting occupants to either the Citadel or Fort Cameron in under five minutes. The lodge also features a last-resort self-destruct mechanism. Activated only by voice authorization from Melissa or Theodora, this system ensures no critical technology or data can fall into enemy hands. In case of a siege, the lodge can deploy automated counter-battery defenses, jamming fields, and active missile interceptors hidden within the terrain.
While The Talon Roost offers warmth, serenity, and a welcoming atmosphere, its hidden security and strategic capabilities reflect the immense responsibilities carried by its owners. This stark juxtaposition mirrors the lives of Melissa Hazen and Theodora Marten-Steiner, who must balance their personal sanctuary with their duties as protectors of humanity’s future. It is a place of respite, but one always ready for the call to action.

A cold, calculating, and syrupy voice remarked, metallic heels clicking against the polished, tiled floor within one of Nazarick’s extravagant kitchens.
The blonde beauty casually flicked the light switch with a finger, buxom breasts bouncing with her every moment, no matter how minute or minor.
Sauntering towards the countertop, the maid resting her arms on the surface, propping her head up with a lazy hand.
“Pray tell, what gave you the brilliant idea to raid our sacred pantries of their stock, hm~? Intruders are to be dealt with appropriately and yet… you’re not human, meaning I can afford the leeway to probe you~”
Well, Miq couldn't deny any of those remarks as she was very much just caught red-handed. Any lie would be just that, any lie that would be hard to believe now. The truth will out, maybe?
Though, that hope is fleeting at the coldness in the other blonde's voice and demeanor lets her know that she's most likely not getting out of this unscathed. As for what kind, she figures that's up to the other woman, isn't it? She's no longer on her own turf or welcome here and this other woman seems to be the one willing to dole out punishments to those she deems worthy of it.
Tumblr media
"......Would you believe me if I told you I sort of just stumbled in here without knowing where I was, saw food and thought I could help myself for now and offer to pay for it later, through monetary means or physical labor? My work for my meal, ya know?"
She is doing her best to keep it together, even if she's shaking like a leaf. Prey knows when it is cornered by a predator and only has dwindling options to make it out alive, if even. But this must be oh-so scintillating to Solution, enjoying the genuine worry and fear in her newly acquired quarry.

So like. The Internet does kinda suck about 70% of the time.
But.
There's an ongoing reddit story by a dentist who went to his parents house, and while looking at their new tile floor, he spots a humanoid jaw. Turns out the tile contains a slice of fossilized hominid! With the help of reddit, they get in contact with a bunch of archeologists/paleontologists and they actually manage to remove the tile with the fossil intact.
For now, all we really know about its origins is that it's from a quarry in Turkey, and they're still in the process of dating it and locating the exact quarry. But it's suspected to be a Homo erectus, of which we've only found about 50 (ish?) fossils so far, and the timeline of when they spread out from modern day Africa is still pretty unclear. (Because that was like 2 million years ago. That's. A long time.) That's why finds in Europe and Asia are particularly exciting
And thematically appropriate: Not only is there a tooth fully missing (implying it was removed through very old dentistry), but one of the molars has a fully intact crown! Analyzing teeth can give us insight into diet and lifestyle, for example. But it's also just funny because a dentist found it. (a large amount of hominid fossils are skull or jaw bones simply because they are more durable than other bones or something idk im not an archeologist)
This is really exciting stuff, and thanks to the Internet, we can watch it unfold in basically real time! Sometimes, this place is pretty neat.

Birmingham Expert Reveals the Solution to Efflorescence Staining
A client from Great Barr in North Birmingham discovered a leak in a water pipe, which had been running in to the Quarry tiled living room for some time. The leak was repaired but had resulted in a lot of water soaking into the quarry tiles. This led to a significant amount of efflorescence appearing as the floor dried out leaving them in a poor condition.
Tumblr media
I paid a visit to the property to see the condition of the tiles for myself and conducted a few tests to work out the best method to remove the efflorescence and restore the appearance of the quarry tiles. From this I worked out a quote which was submitted to my client’s insurance company.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The job was then put on hold for a couple of months until the client’s insurance company agreed the claim. This as it turns out was not such a bad thing, as the floor needed time to dry out completely (aided with dehumidifiers) before work began.
Cleaning a Quarry Tiled Living Room Floor
On the first day I started by taking moisture readings from the floor, which were quite low, and confirmed the floor had indeed dried out. Next, I gave the floor a general clean using Tile Doctor Remove & Go, I used a strong dilution and sprayed it onto the floor allowing it to soak in for ten minutes. Then I went around the edges and corners with a piece of black scrubbing pad to get the awkward areas clean first. I then used a 120-grit carbide silicone pad fitted to a rotary machine to loosen up the dirt.
The floor was then rinsed with an air flex pro machine which applies water at high pressure to the floor and then simultaneously extracts the dislodged dirt with a built-in wet vacuum.
To deal with the efflorescence I applied Tile Doctor Grout Clean-up and worked it in with a 240-grit carbide pad as before. This product is acidic and is perfect for dissolving the alkaline salts that form efflorescence. The solution was then rinsed off and extracted as before, and I set up a couple of air movers to aid drying the floor, for a couple of hours.
Sealing a Quarry Tiled Living Room Floor
Before leaving for the day I applied a coat of Tile Doctor Stone Oil and let that soak in for twenty minutes before towelling off the excess, the floor was then let to dry off fully overnight, again I left a couple of air movers in place to assist with the drying.
The next day I applied two coats of Tile Doctor X-Tra Seal, leaving an hour between coats to dry. The Stone Oil and X-Tra Seal will give great protection going forward and give the quarry tiles a slight sheen which really lifts the appearance of the tiles. Another benefit of the sealer is it improves the colour of the tiles and being fully breathable it will allow moisture still in the floor to rise through and evaporate at the surface.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Finally, I buffed the Quarry tiles with a white pad to bring up their appearance even further. My client was very happy with what was a complete transformation to the floor and left the following review.Very helpful insurance repair. Visited whenever necessary to give advice and helped with ongoing maintenance suggestions.
Before leaving took time to discuss aftercare cleaning for which I left them with a complimentary bottle of Tile Doctor pH Neutral Tile Cleaner.

Thinking about Them again and, specifically, Bill adopting a habit of kissing Rita carefully when they begin to build something tentative and reserved between them in the aftermath of the war, when troops roll back and awards are handed out and people are quickly forgotten in the scramble to recoup profits and property and glory in history. He doesn't presume to kiss her whenever he pleases, no matter how much he imagines himself taking one step forward and angling his head and cupping a sharp elbow or firm muscled waist. Rita takes her affection like her coffee, on her terms, when she wants it and most usually when she's made it herself. (Or, not at all.) But for him to kiss her temple, in the morning - Because Bill won't ever wake up as early as Rita does by routine, and so he always goes to look for her as soon as he's swung his legs down over the side of the creaking-spring bed and the soft quilt they shared in it. And he might pad across old wooden floors and over older quarry tiles barefoot to find her sitting at the table of her kitchen - a gift, in an uncertain world where war heroes get abruptly awarded a townhouse in the leafiest London suburb as a thanks for their face and pain and blood. The stove would be lit, warm, and the coffee's steam catches sunlight, and Rita sits alone, watching new branches of soft white flowers tap on the dated windowpanes. - she'll accept a kiss, just by her hairline, against the scar that crosses to her eyebrow and stands stark against her skin. She'll make a low noise, between humming and a huff, acknowledgement made habitually rough by years of smoke and curtness and army manners. And she'll lean into the dry brush of his mouth, as his hand rests light on the back of her chair. Just a little. (And Bill feels a little electrified, every time, in the morning and the quiet - with his mouth pressed right to the scar he sometimes lets his eyes trace in the middle of the night when Rita sleeps on her side, facing the door and facing him, and he can't sleep because it's one of those nights that he's convinced himself will reset once he sleeps, and all of this will fade away into his head on a canvas bag or the sound of a chopper blade.) His kiss always touches the same point of her scar, then a second brush, lower, the exact beat of three seconds. Rita makes coffee with exact grams, exact timing, and keeps the same mugs facing her from the cupboard in the morning. They have days upon days of infinite and changing possibility to live, now - and neither of them ever really thought of the unknowable, inexplicable difficulty of losing a loop's perfect routine. To come out the other side, finally, joyfully - and carry a gut-seated unease that persists and persists as things change in a million small daily ways.
It helps, to have coffee together. And they do, every morning that they can, with Rita's ankle pressed against Bill's under the rough oak table that reminds him of an empty home and dusty garage in France that she's never seen.

A Feast of Nothing - short fiction
The house was unwanted, as many are. It was easy to not want, set away from town down a dirt road overgrown with strangling bare branches. No one gave a thought to its high, Victorian walls, pressed too close to the drained pits of a long abandoned quarry. No one looked at its darkened windows, its sagging porch, its ill-fitting doors that buckled in their frames and thought “Now this, I desire.” We had that in common I suppose, the house and I.
There was something about the way the house held me within its walls. In its cavernous, bare hallways, stripped and plastered flat. Like cauterised wounds left behind from excised organs. Joists and beams bowing down like split ribs eager to keep me within. Its doorways; toothless mouths guiding me to empty rooms. Each one a hungry stomach eager for sustenance. I knew that first night, lying awake beneath a ceiling swollen and straining under the unbearable desire for long gone, honey-sweet memories, that this house was just as broken, was just as lonely as me.
It cried in the night, hollow at first. A rattling, pained sound as though my presence brought back too many painful remembrances. But they soon grew warm and wet. Substantive. Whispers of disbelief and tentative excitement that pricked my ears; breathless questions from a new and curious friend. I felt its longing. Deep in the cellar of my gut where I hadn’t felt anything shift or stir in years. A pain. A hunger.
It wanted, I knew, to consume me. To digest me in its empty rooms. To imprison me within its chest in place of a beating heart. It wanted – no, it needed me. Desperately. And I, for all my initial screaming and fitting against the whispers that chilled my blood, had my own desperation. One born, as I suspect the house’s was, of disregard and neglect. I needed, like so many do, to be needed.
What a thing, to be haunted, I thought, naked skin pressed against the cracked tile of the bathroom floor. I had known once, what it felt like to live on phantoms. Whispers of feelings long dead. Sentiments wasting in the back of kitchen cupboards. I love yous buried without service under years of dust and debt. I had known, in the years before and after my love left, the bitter pleasure of an appetite sated by rotting nothings.
So, I let it feast.
And as I let the house consume my flesh my ghosts returned. They swirled about me, and through me, and within me, as I watched my bones emerging from the contracting walls of my skin. They filled me as I starved. We became as one, the house and I, and the ghosts I held, and the long depleted quarry that held the house. Nesting dolls in a thicket of bare trees. Hollow shells protecting our sisters in turn with painted smiles.
Each emptier than the last, but content with our feast of nothing.

Egyptian Porphyry aka Imperial Porphyry (two views) - this 3/4" (2cm) chip was found on the walk from the parking lot up to the ruins of Hadrian's Villa in 1998.
In Imperial Roman times this stone was considered as the inherent personal property of the Emperor throughout the realm.
It comes from only one source; a single mountain in Egypt that the Romans called Mons Porphyry. It is a purple, volcanic stone, very dense and fine-grained, with small white inclusions.
According to Pliny’s Natural History, Imperial Porphyry was discovered in 14 (or 18?) CE by Caius Cominius Leugas, a Roman legionary.  Seeing that this hard stone was the purple color which symbolized Imperial power, he had samples brought to the Emperor Tiberius in Rome.  When Tiberius saw that this royal-colored stone was solid enough for building and carving, he decreed that “Imperial Porphyry” would be for the use of the Imperial family only.
This use to convey royalty made Imperial Porphyry truly the stone of Empire, causing it to be more significant and powerful to the Empire than gold.
The Byzantine Emperors used Imperial Porphyry to tile the interiors of some palace rooms, including the room where pregnant empresses gave birth. Young princes were given the title porphyrygenitos to indicate they were legitimate imperial heirs, born and raised in rooms of porphyry.
Constantine XI, the last of the Byzantine emperors, was crowned not in Constantinople, but in the provincial city of Mystras, which had a single Imperial Porphyry tile set into the floor. The new Emperor was said to have stood on that tile to be sworn in in 1449, continuing and ending the tradition that had been part of the Empire for more than 1,400 years.
Centuries later, Napoleon Bonaparte wanted to be buried in an Imperial Porphyry tomb, as a symbol that he was a legitimate heir to the Roman Emperors. He had officials search for the long-lost Imperial quarry during his expedition to Egypt, but was unable to find the ancient source. He was instead buried in a sarcophagus of much more common red porphyry.
The ancient quarry on Mons Porphyry was rediscovered by Sir John Wilkinson, a former president of the Royal Geographic Society in 1823, only two years after Napoleon’s death. The site - now called Jabal Abu Dukhkhan - is a World Heritage site. It is about 30 miles inland from the city of Hurghada on the southwestern shores of the Gulf of Suez by the Red Sea.

For $19 you can purchase some porphyry chips for yourself. Or maybe something bigger:
