Every once in a while I’ll see some posts about everyone should become vegan in order to help the environment. And that… sounds kinda rude. I’m sure they don’t mean to come off that way but like, humans are omnivores. Yes there are people who won’t have any animal products be it meat or otherwise either due to personal beliefs or because their body physically cannot handle it, and that’s okay! You don’t have to change your diet to include those products if you don’t want to or you physically can’t.
But there’s indigenous communities that hunt and farm animals sustainably and have been doing so for generations. And these animals are a primary source of food for them. Look to the bison of North America. The settlers nearly caused an extinction as a part of a genocide. Because once the Bison were gone it caused an even sharper decline of the indigenous population. Now thankfully Bison did not go extinct and are actively being shared with other groups across America.
Now if we look outside of indigenous communities we have people who are doing sustainable farming as well as hunting. We have hunting seasons for a reason, mostly because we killed a lot of the predators. As any hunter and they will tell you how bad the deer population can get. (Also America has this whole thing about bird feathers and bird hunting, like it was bad until they laid down some laws. People went absolutely nuts on having feathers be a part of fashion like holy cow.)
We’re slowly getting better with having gardens and vertical farms within cities, and there’s some laws on being able to have a chicken or two at your house or what-have-you in the city for some eggs. (Or maybe some quails since they’re smaller than chickens it’s something that you’d might have to check in your area.) Maybe you would be able to raise some honey bees or rent them out because each honey tastes different from different plants. But ultimately when it comes to meat or cheese? Go to your local farmers. Go to farmers markets, meet with the people there, become friends, go actively check out their farm. See how the animal lives are and if the farmer is willing, talk to them about sustainable agriculture. See what they can change if they’re willing. Support indigenous communities and buy their food and products, especially if you’re close enough that the food won’t spoil on its way to you. (Like imagine living in Texas and you want whale meat from Alaska and you buy it from an indigenous community. I would imagine that would be pretty hard to get.)
Either way everything dies in the end. Do we shame scavengers for eating corpses they found before it could rot and spread disease? Do we shame the animals that hunt other animals to survive? Yes factory farming should no longer exist. So let’s give the animals the best life we can give them. If there’s babies born that the farmer doesn’t want, give them away to someone who wants them as a pet. Or someone who wants to raise them for something else. Not everyone can raise animals for their meat. I know I can’t I would get to emotionally attached. I’d only be able to raise them for their eggs and milk.
Yeah this was pretty much thrown together, and I just wanted to say my thoughts and throw them into the void. If you have some examples of sustainable farming/agriculture, please share them because while I got some stuff I posted from YouTube, I’m still interested to see what stuff I might’ve missed!

various and sundry artbook tidbits i found interesting (SPOILERS AHEAD FOR THE VEILGUARD ARTBOOK. obviously)
faction & location stuff:
a sketch page from the very early days exploring shape languages for factions like elves, dwarves, wardens, the necropolis, tevinter, and rivain, also includes concepts for the mages’ college and the ben-hassrath
early rivain concept arts have npcs with a similar armour patterning to duncan’s, suggesting it’s a mark of his rivaini heritage like i always thought!
the depiction of the ““creation story”” suggests elves were mimicking the bodies of dwarves when they formed their own, not humans like i think mythal says in game flashbacks, which would make more sense timeline wise
there’s concept art of the city of ventus, which i believe is of particular relevance to mercar players? it’s right on the border of arlathan forest, and surrounded by magical statues holding out raised hands forming a ward along the tree line to keep it from encroaching
the home base was going to be a lovable fixer-upper of a ship given to us by isabela, named the dumat. this didn’t fit the spy theme they were originally going for, so they tried really really hard to make it a submarine without feeling anachronistic by making it sort of sea monster shaped. there are a lot of cutaways and schematics. they were going to give it a mystery engine that you would get light fetch quests to feed random objects: “ten dried lavender flowers, five quail’s eggs, three brass belt buckles, etc.....” the submarine then turned into an undersea mansion on the back of some giant shambling sea creature you would never get a good look at
later on there were some funny takes on the lighthouse specifically, like bringing back the sea creature theme to put it on the back of an interdimensional veil whale, or having it be the true location of the black emporium with a collection of eluvians that xenon the antiquarian lets you use
there’s a tiny concept art for a “high-speed aravel chase” in a canyon like a western
tevinter gladiators are mentioned a couple times. we WEREEE going to get to see the minrathous proving grounds :( there’s also a dwarven embassy concept art somebody take me out back and shoot me
there are a lot of ghilan’nain creature designs that didn’t make it into the game which is a shame but i can see why they would have been resource heavy
the antiva concept arts are so gorgeous. a lot of it got through! and definitely the overall Vibe made it. at some point it seems to have been antiva city itself; they don’t call it treviso and they mention the circle of magi as a major landmark
“The entrance to the Necropolis is like an inverted Tower of Babel. They seek knowledge in the grave instead of heaven.” <- this just rules as a line
for arlathan: “To differentiate it from previous forest and jungle locations in Dragon Age, we went with an autumnal colour palette. It has the benefit to feeling ominously like the end.”
the veil jumpers have a “skull halla” symbol that “implies their willingness to risk death”. did that end up in the game?
“With each faction, we explored a range of aspirational fantasies. For the Wardens, this ranged from knights in shining armour to butal tanks to a Nietzche quote: ‘Beware that, when fighting monsters, you yourself do not become a monster.’”
there’s this concept among the warden armours for an insane orlesian noblewoman look with the winter palace morrigan corset and a piled high wig, but the skirts torn knee length and a serrated fan in hand. i’m kind of obsessed
“To bring more life to the world, we thought about what industries would keep the Anderfels afloat. We took the prominent Warden blue colour and envisioned an industry harvesting flowers, creating dye, and then weaving copious amounts of blue fabric.” this is probably where the flower quests in the hossberg wetlands started off conceptually? v cute
character stuff:
in completely different early versions of the game, solas had a “bad cop” right hand woman called reva
imshael the desire demon/choice spirit from the masked empire and inquisition was going to be a two-handed weapon warrior companion, and also sexualised now while in largely feminine form, which would have been a Choice. there is one art of him in masculine form, also sexy but still not showing as much skin as the feminine one
as i said, neve was going to be calpernia
taash was a rogue. (they’re still a light-armoured dual wielder so that checks out.) it seems like davrin was briefly a mage. at some points harding seems to have inherited bianca
saarbrak, another qunari companion, seems to have lastest the longest of the abandoned concepts. he’s the only non-canon one who got as far as having a place for him sketched into designs of the lighthouse: “saarbrak’s planning room”. mentions and sightings of what might be him are sporadic and i think you only see his name on that sketch, but i’m connecting it to the description “a potential qunari companion evolved from saarebas to dapper qunari spy, offering a deeper look into qunari culture”
the embroidery on harding’s clothes is how she passes the time while “waiting for days in a sniper perch” on missions. i just thought that was cute

Wings of Fire Drug Headcanons
Dragon drugs are wild Seawings- Jellyfish, Sea Urchin, Little Spinefish, Psychedelic Frogfish, Synchiropus Spendidus, and Pufferfish are the most popular forms of drugs in the seawing kingdom. Most law enforcement will arrest dragons with the position of these fish and the average term in prison for these drugs is 4-6 months. Medics and other forms of doctoral care are allowed to host and keep these drugs for pain reduction uses but must have a license and a clean record, along with permission from the queen to hold. Seawing drugs are the second most powerful drugs in the kingdoms and are sold on a black market to the other kingdoms alongside the Rainwings. Most seawings have a higher tolerance to these drugs than other tribes, so when a dragon from a different tribe takes too much of these drugs, they often wind up overdosing and dying if not reached quick enough. Skywings- Hooded pitohui, European Quail, and Little Shrike-thrush are the choice drugs in the Skywing kingdoms. These birds are highly toxic to dragons outside of the sky kingdom, even hybrids struggle to cope with these drugs. Most sky dragons avoid using these forms of drugs, except outside of medical use on other tribes, because if taken too often or in high dosage they can lead to death. The use of these drugs is not outlawed in the Kingdom of the Sky since not many dragons take these drugs. Rainwings- Rainwings have two categories of drugs, Amphibia and Floral. Golden Poison Dart Frog, Blue Poison Dart Frog, Strawberry Poison Dart Frog, and Pickerel Frog are the most commonly found drugs in the rainwing kingdoms. These frogs are often not limited since they do no harm to the rainwings taking them. However, they are highly toxic to dragons outside of the rainwing kingdom and not sold on the black market to the tribes. These frogs are not monitored in the rain kingdom and there are no regulations on drug use, that is why the overdose rate in the rainwing tribe is so high. Salcia Divinorum, Peyote, Opium Poppies, Cannabis Sativa, Nicotiana Tabacum, Dura Stramonium, Psilocybin Mushrooms, and Myristica Fragrant are the flora drugs in the rainwing kingdom and can be sold on the black market to the other tribes. These plants can be used in many forms that do not require eating such as inhalation, injection, and consumption. Just like the amphibian drugs, these are not regulated or monitored in the rainwing kingdom. The rainforest is the drug capital of the dragon kingdoms and the center of the black market, the queens do not shut this down due to the mass increase of income to all the kingdoms. Icewings- Icewings are HARD on the NO DRUG RULES. The only animal in the ice kingdom that anyone can think of is Orcas. Orca whales are hard to hunt in the ice kingdom and only Icewings can take this form of drug, however, it is outlawed in the ice kingdom to take these drugs. Icewings frown heavily on the use of drugs and it is a criminal offense to use with punishment ranging between 6 and 14 months in prison with probation after release.
Sandwings- Africanized Bee, Coral Snake, Gila Monster, and Hyenas are the choice drugs of the Sandwings with a bit of a mixed reaction towards the collective whole of the kingdom. Some dragons want a ban on drug use excluding medical use while others do not see it as a major problem. Sandwings tend to get most of their drugs from the black market and trade their own drugs since it is not as toxic as most other drugs from other kingdoms.
Mudwings- Mambas, Puffer Adders, Carpet Vipers, and Platypus are the drugs of the mud kingdom and are often monitored heavily by law enforcement. The mudwings have a strict medical use policy stating that, outside of medical use, drug use is frowned upon and highly punishable with a 3-6 month prison sentence if abused. Mudwings tend to produce as many of these drugs as they can seeing as they're not as harsh on the other tribes, these drugs are the most common on the market.
Nightwings- Vampire Bats, Hedgehogs, Solenodon, Shrew, and Slow Loris are the nightwing drugs of choice. All are Mammalia that frequent the kingdom and are sold on the black market, similar to the mudwings. The nightwings have similar medical uses as the mudwings but tend to be a little looser with their free-use laws, stating that nightwings should stay home so as to not disrupt the flow of the kingdom. The nightwings also tend to buy and sell drugs at higher prices than originally bought to broaden income.

Killer whales (I love the southern residents) Fun fact: I adopted J-35 Tahlequah from the whale museum last year!
Elasmobranchs, particularly Bluntnose Six-gill, Bamboo, and Scalloped Hammerhead sharks, as well as Spotted Eagle rays. Cephalopods also intrigue me, with the blanket octopus being my favorite.
The Geologic Time Scale, especially the Cambrian and Carboniferous period. I’ve committed to memory most of the Eras and periods within the Phanerozoic Eon! I love learning about earths evolutionary history :3
Dinosaurs! My top three are Carnotaurus, Spinosaurus and parasaurolophus!
I love Nature photography! I am a nature photographer myself, I photograph mostly birds but I've also photographed different whales and flowers. I shoot with a Canon EOS R7 paired with the RF 100-500mm lens.
Fun facts about me
I’m a Pisces (Birthday is March 1st). I can speak a little Norwegian. I am a nature informed illustrator. I collect shark teeth, shells and other coastal items. Lastly I volunteer at an aquarium and I’m a member of the Florida Young birders club.

Not that sabertooth cats wouldn’t be great but I feel like things that survived to the holocene should get priority and for mainland Europe those “ missing” holocene species are common Button quail, Marsh Owl, Gray Whale ( probably reintroductions not possible), lion, dhole, wapiti, (arguably) tiger, megaloceros , and wooly mammoth
Thankfully muskox, water buffalo, Atlantic sturgeon and onager have been returned already! ( though only tiny numbers), honestly though Europe has made alot of progress in wildlife recovery compared to the lower 48, especially with bison, and wolves https://rewildingeurope.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/Wildlife-Comeback-in-Europe-the-recovery-of-selected-mammal-and-bird-species.pdf , nowhere near south Africa though of course
<3 rewilding europe. Yeah this is mostly a bit, the state of European wildlife is bad but it's good to see how well reductions in agricultural land use and modified hunting policies are helping bring back populations.
I need to make some time to check out the nature reserve in Milovice. They've got wild horses and apparently one of the biggest concentrations of butterfly variety in the country. They even saw a wolf there one time!

In The Fashion
A lion has a tail and a very fine tail, And so has an elephant and so has a whale, And so has a crocodile, and so has a quail-- They’ve all got tails but me.
If I had sixpence I would buy one; I’d say to the shopman, "Let me try one"; I’d say to the elephant, "This is my one." They’d all come round to see.
Then I’d say to the lion, "Why, you’ve got a tail!" And so has the elephant, and so has the whale! And, look! There’s a crocodile! He’s got a tail! "You’ve all got tails like me!"

“If you aren’t a thief then how did you know why not to steal a troll’s purse?” Kili drawls and then quails under his Uncle’s thunderous glare. “Not… that I tried to do that.” He squeaks.
Kili implicates himself (chp. 4)
(Un)Familiar Ground by The Feels Whale (miscellea) (AO3) The Hobbit – Teen – Bilbo Baggins/Thorin Oakenshield #Alternate Universe #Time Travel #Fix-It #Everything is the Same #Until it isn’t #Incomplete
The Shire is spread out at Bilbo’s feet like a green duvet that stretches out as far as the eye can see. The air is full of birdsong and the indistinct murmur of a small town; conversation, laughter, and squabbling all blending together into a single cohesive whole.
Bilbo stands on young strong legs without thinking and takes three shaking steps away from the polished flagstone that makes up the front step of Bag End.
There is Farmer Maggot driving a herd of geese to market and there, there is Hamfast Gamgee tramping down Bagshot Row looking like a tween again with a flask of Gamgee rotgut poking out his back pocket. He is surrounded by faces and voices he knows, all of whom should be older and altered. Many of which should be dead.
‘Is this the undying land?’ Bilbo wonders and pinches himself. It feels real. It feels too real. If feels… familiar.
Bilbo gets sent back from the Undying Lands for one last try. Sometimes perspective makes all the difference.

Dinosaur Trivia Time:
There are about 10,000 living species of Dinosaur (birds).
The first non-avian dinosaur scientifically named was Megalosaurus.
It was almost named "Humanum Scrotum" because that was the name given to a... specifically-shaped bone fragment that had previously been discovered. Yes, the first dinosaur could have basically been called "Human Nutsack".
The first mention of a dinosaur (other than birds) in a novel is said to be of Megalosaurus, in the opening passage of Charles Dickens' Bleak House: "As much mud in the streets, as if the waters had but newly retired from the face of the earth, and it would not be wonderful to meet a Megalosaurus, forty feet long or so, waddling like an elephantine lizard up Holborn-hill."
Certain dinosaurs use fire as a tool- ie "firestarter birds", who carry burning twigs.
Dinosaurs have traveled in space- in fact a quail chick hatched by Russian cosmonauts on the Mir space station was the first known vertebrate ever born off of Earth.
We now know what colour some non-avian dinosaurs were by studying the shape of the cells in some very well-preserved fossils The first non-avian dinosaur who's colour was scientifically determined is Sinosauropteryx, a tiny, bird-like therapod from China. It was orange with a striped tail.
We also know what sounds some might have made- particularly Parasaurolophus, a Hadrosaur "duck-billed dinosaur" with a hollow crest on its head that when air is blown through it, produces sounds similar to a brass instrument, or (I think) whale song. Have a listen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QtpSOpUDCb8
Spinosaurus is (I think) the longest-known predatory dinosaur, but Tyrannosaurus was probably the heaviest.
No, we have no actual idea what the biggest dinosaur was because pretty much all the contenders are known from few/fragmentary remains. It was pretty definitely a sauropod, though.
There is a trackway in Texas that appears to show a large therapod stalking and attacking a sauropod.
You can identify a dinosaur from a non-dinosaur skeleton by looking at its hips. If it has a hip composed of three bones with a hole/socket in the middle ("a perforated acetabulum"), it's a dinosaur: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mn5V7oII8l0

okay serious status update of the game. i finally had a proper base. there's a little farm, and i have a surplus of grain, enough to last the winter even if i dont do anything. i have so much bread my daily meal is a sandwich and a fruit salad. im in the process of making a copper anvil, i have a full leather armor with some to spare, and i have enough coal for several welding and working.
one glaring thing that i lack, is a bed. as i said before i have horrible luck when it comes to animals. when i was hunting and gathering without a stable place, i ate mostly rabbits and deers, which gave me some raw hide. but other than those, i got nothing. maybe a quail or a turkey if im lucky. the only animals that drop a hide large enough for a bed is a cow or a bear. i had a bed in my old base, but its long since burned down. i havent seen any cow ever since. i did meet a bear twice, which i died from btw. maybe i should make a bed from silk strings.
my search for valuable animals brings me nothing so far. but i did find a super large deposit of copper, so big i cant mine them all. i should craft a bag for that too. i probably should work on the things im already good at, like the mining and the agriculture, but when it starts snowing again, i know i cant travel as fast as i can and the resources i can just gather from the wilderness are very limited. plus, i can mine while looking for animals and farming for crops is something you can just left to grow on their own. urgh, i need to find a bed before winter. im sick of having to walk thousands of miles to go home.
my plan this summer is to get a bed, a backpack, farm as much as possible, and a steady source of milk. eggs would be nice. i found a quail but so far theyre all male. i cant breed them together so i think im just gonna kill one of them for food. im sorry but i cant afford homosexuality in my base, even if its pride month. farming is crazy btw, its time consuming, you thought youre done but then its night so you have to wait to leave house in the morning. but then by morning some crops are mature and you have excess seeds and a bunch of compost so the cycle starts all over again.
during winter, i would not be able to go far anywhere so im thinking to expand my base while waiting out the snow. my base already have two separate wings of the house, dedicated first for a kitchen and the other for a forge. dont ever build a kitchen or a room near the kitchen with wattle and daub btw. it WILL burn down. if you want to be safe but have a pretty base, have a layer of rock insulating any room with a fire source before building a second layer of the next room with wood. also dont put barrels on the ceiling of the forge especially if you dont put a proper chimney. dont waste precious hides, limewater and tannins like me. anyway, i want to expand the base, i want to have a bigger storage room, maybe even a little living room for guests, even though im only on my own in this world. also, i got lost really often. so i needed my base to have a super tall and big tower so i can easily find it. im gonna call it my babel tower and it will expand forever until i decide to move out. which will inevitably happen.
i might need to expand the forge next year and build a windmill or a waterwheel to automate the quern grinding process and anvil smithing and oh shit waterwheel requires a river and the flow on the river next door is too slow so i might have to move a bit. also i need a good light source so i need to find tallow and that requires me to explore the sea and hunt some whales. And dont forget to craft some blue steel for the lantern. And try glassworking for the windows. but thats a problem for next year's winter. everything's quite sufficient now.

an inexhaustive list of wildlife I've seen while visiting my parents in northern california:
many birds, including ravens, woodpeckers, hummingbirds, juncos, wild turkeys, steller's jays, bald eagles, and quail!
deer! including lots of babies! I've seen fawns while going for walks on my parents' driveway, even
also elk, though that's less common
though there is a cattle farmer that has an elk get in their herd every so often, so we always pay attention when we drive by
salamanders!!! once I saw a salamander that looked like it was made of black rubber mixed with glitter!
harbor seals! there are tons of these here, and sometimes you can see them up close near the place we go for shrimp and chips!
ground squirrels! (along with regular squirrels and chipmunks)
rabbits too :)
WHALES we saw whales once off the coast when we went into Mendocino for errands
coyotes out near the lighthouse
foxes, including the one that kept climbing into our bird feeder at night
also at night, bats! one night I sat outside and watched a meteor shower and I could see bats outlined against the sky and it was so peaceful
bobcats! I saw one running in the middle of the road once! watch out, little guy!
mountain lions! okay, I heard this one, I didn't see it. but bro, they sound really fucked up.
I DID SEE A BEAR THO that fucker keeps going after our trash and once it broke into the car while we were asleep! vandalism!! love him tho he's so fat. probably from all the trash.
ring ring ring ring ring ring ring ring banana slug
no really once I saw a baby banana slug eating a fallen rose petal and I Was At Peace
skunks :(
in short, my dad and I are always stopping by the side of the road or on our walks like LOOK!!! I SEE A THING!!!!!!! lmao

15 Mutuals 15 Questions!
Thank you so much to @bee-notes for tagging me!! I had a blast answering these questions!
No Pressure Taglist: @assorted-bean @mewsporridge @collector-of-fishes-souls @pinkhairandpronouns @astralunar @abiquail05 @villalunae @winterbear04 @aonogitsune @friendofthecrows @quails-and-whales @anxiousescapis @bird-bird-bird-bird @atombombtom @roachhman
Feel free to skip a few questions if you want!! No pressure at all, just a way to get to know y’all more :”)
Were you named after anyone?
No, I wasn’t! My first name was chosen by my mom and grandfather because they liked the way it sounded, and my middle name was chosen by my dad. Fun fact, my name translates to “Purity in Artistry”, which is a very rad and on-brand choice if I say so myself.
When was the last time you cried?
Hmm, probably day before yesterday? The past couple days have been sort of rough on me ngl
Do you have kids?
No, and I plan on keeping it that way. As much as I love kids and value them highly, I don’t think I’d be a very good parent for a variety of reasons.
Do you use sarcasm a lot?
Yep. Mostly absurdist sarcasm. A lot of people have trouble understanding my sense of humour and tonal shifts. I like to be as weird as possible but I always underline it all with a stark deadpan tone.
What’s the first thing you notice about people?
Hm, probably their hair? It’s always so interesting to see how someone’s natural hair and sense of style is reflective of their personality.
   What’s your eye color?
Their chicory coloured orbs stared into my soul, speckled with streaks of g-
Nah, I’m kidding. They’re dark brown, so dark as to be mistaken for black. I’m rather proud of them.
   Scary movies or happy endings?
I like bittersweetness. I like to be reminded that a story does not end, per se, due to its very nature as a story that can be re-experienced. All my favourite endings of all time deny the listeners/readers/watchers the catharsis of conclusion.
All that to say I don’t really mind any ending as long as it’s thematic, lol. Depends on what kind of story we’re talking about.
Any special talents?
Hmmmm not really anything special? I suppose my writing stands out as a skill, and so does my aptitude for public speaking. That’s about it. I’ve been meaning to learn more.
   Where were you born?
I was born in a semi-metropolitan town in Tamil Nadu. It’s a really nice place, not very far off from my hometown.
  What are your hobbies?
I like to read, write, sing sometimes? I used to play the guitar but I fell out of practice. Been meaning to pick it up again. Oh, and crochet! I recently learnt how to crochet and it’s been suuuuper fun.
Have any pets?
I’ve never been able to have a pet of my own because we kept moving very often, but my grandfather has a dog named Mothy! He’s a very hyperactive and exciteable boi. I love him a lot.
What sports do you play/have you played?
I used to play badminton back in school, and I was rather good at throwball too, but then I lost practice. I’m really out of shape and exercise due to a variety of reasons, lol. I’m gonna pick it back up when I go to college, hopefully.
   How tall are you?
171 centimetres! That would be uhh  5′7′‘?
I’m the tallest of my friend group which is something that I love to hold over them. Not like they can reach it anyway.
Favorite subject in school?
English! This comes as absolutely no surprise to anyone who has even a passing familiarity with me. I love to read and I love to write, and I love to interpret and re-interpret and see people try to comprehend new pieces of text! I like to consume media scientifically, by surgically analyzing it piece by piece. I owe a lot of that to the hours I spent arguing with my teachers (and later my friends) about media interpretations.
Dream job?
I’ve always wanted to be able to work in film, in writing scripts and maybe even directing? I’ve been meaning to start off small, maybe do a few youtube videos here and there. I’m in the process of writing a few video essays actually! Who knows, maybe now that I’m in college I can finally make it work out...?
