Número 5 do ranking mundial do tênis de mesa, o brasileiro Hugo Calderano avançou às quartas de final do Grand Smash de Singapura, ao vencer nesta quinta-feira (16) o esloveno Darko Jorgic (10º) por 3 sets a 1 (12/10, 11/8, 7/11 e 11/5). O carioca volta a competir às 8h45 (horário de Brasília) desta sexta (17). O adversário nas quartas será o nigeriano Quadri Aruna (14º do mundo). Único brasileiro remanescente na competição, Calderano fez um duelo equilibrado contra o esloveno Jorgic nesta quinta (16). O brasileiro dominou os dois primeiros sets. Depois, foi superado por Jorgic que chegou ao empate várias vezes antes de vencer a terceira parcial. No set seguinte, Calderano controlou o jogo por completo: forçou os erros do esloveno até ganhar a parcial e o jogo, assegurando presença nas quartas. A campanha exitosa de Calderano no torneio em Singapura começou com a vitória na estreia contra o sul-coreano Seungmin Cho (3 sets a 2). Na sequência, o brasileiro bateu o japonês Yukiya Uda (3 sets a 1), se classificando para o jogo desta quinta (16) contra Jorgic.
