add this to the list of goofy ass personal aus for me and me alone
au where everythings the same but Ozpin's blind thats all
#masky says#again its called SELF indulgence for a reason#im simple i like blind characters who use their blindness to their advantage#ozpin wouldnt be able to rely on ozymandias or any other past lives for sight since they'd need to use HIS body's senses to detect anything#no one can see. its a new experience for almost ever life i'd imagine#but ozpin's grown up without his sight so he knows how to navigate the scary world#hes not totally blind. he can see...vague shapes. very vague.#but thats it.#long memory works as a normal cane and ur usual blind cane#hes memorized beacon's halls along with the usual rush of students and which way they'd come and go to classes so he doesnt get lost in the#-rush if hes ever goin from one place to another alone#glynda usually sticks by his side to act as his guide if hes goin somewhere super crowded#tho i mostly like it cause the vibe of ozpin bein one of those characters who keeps their eyes closed all the time is a VIBE#hes still a top huntsman. hes still the headmaster. hes still one of ozma's many lives#but hes blind. thats all that changes and it changes nothing and also everything#qrow acting as a seeing eye bird when ozpin asks for his help#sitting on his shoulder and cawing if oz nearly bumps into a wall or someone#i know its not real evidence but i do like ozpin memorizing the feel of qrow's facial features#the scruff of his beard the way his skin dips in places where scars linger#he likes touching people hes very touchy. its the best way he knows to see in his own personal way#he wouldnt notice ruby's silver eyes. he'd need to be told later. glynda probably mentions it making ozpin interested even further in her-#-progress and acceptance into his academy

I’m doing it, because I have no self control I’m doing it.
Here we goooooo this is what I’m going to name the Recurring AU.
So some basic info to put out on the table:
- Ozpin is still immortal, still reincarnates, etc.
- Qrow, in a certain way, is also immortal. But it’s a bit interesting so bear with me.
- Qrow owns a sword, The Decaying Future. In order to use magic with it however, he has to use his own life force to do so. Decaying future has a direct connection to Qrow and his soul.
- Qrow’s soul, goes from person to person, much like Ozpin’s soul does. But where as Ozpin looks different each time he reincarnates, Qrow looks near identical to what he originally looked like and also, even more apparent, doesn’t remember anything from his previous lives.
- Qrow, each time, is still just as he was before he died the previous time and he always seems to show up when Oz needs help. But doesn’t have his memories, and can never quite place when he got Decaying Future or where he got his countless scars.
- so in a way, he’s still mortal, at least he thinks he is. And acts as a sort of protector of Oz, in one way or another. That being a good friend, royal guard, coworker, or spouse.
- The Decaying Future acts as an opposite to The Long Memory. Where as Long Memory stores magic to use for later, Decaying Future takes magic to use immediately. This is how Qrow has died in the past and why he can’t just use magic now, because Decaying Memory constantly takes Qrow’s magic (and life force) whenever it uses magic.
Now let’s get into the fun stuff!
- Oz doesn’t realize that Qrow is the same person he knew in the past for a few of Qrow’s reincarnates. Thinking he’s hallucinating, Oz ignores it.
- When Oz finds out about Qrow reincarnating he’s understandably overjoyed, finally! A familiar face. And the face of his former spouse nonetheless!
- this excitement would soon fade when Oz comes to the sad and horrifying realization that Qrow, does not remember him at all.
- this of course makes things difficult, because Oz desperately wants to catch up with him like old times. Desperately wants to talk to him about things that have happened but knows he can’t because of Qrow not remembering him.
- and it becomes even more painful for Oz when Qrow does what he had previously done, protect Oz. At any cost.
- No matter where he was, no matter what time period, no matter if Oz tried to make SURE that Qrow would come nowhere near him, he was there. Constantly. Protecting him, bonding with him, laughing with him.
- and Oz couldn’t help but keep falling for him, every. Single. Time. Which made it hurt even more when Qrow did do everything in his power to protect Oz, at any cost.
- it was a curse to Oz. To have to see the man he loved not remember him, to have to bond with him all over again, to have to see him get killed over and over and over and over again just because he wanted to protect him.
- but he kept going with it. Because it would be inevitable, their first meeting. Oz had tried, tried to do everything in his power to make sure Qrow wouldn’t find him or come near him, and yet always he found a way. So he tried to make the best of it.
- cherished every moment with Qrow, made every single moment up until his inevitable death worth it in the end.
- Qrow always has this feeling of deja vu when he sees certain photos from completely different times, like he was there almost, but he can’t quite place it.
- Qrow struggles with remembering things already of remembering things wrong, so he never truly quite thought about it.
- He did find it strange that Oz seemed to recognize him though. He had never met Oz before so how could he know?
- Oz is, well, a strange but interesting man. One who Qrow finds it quite enjoyable to be around, never a dull moment.
- Decaying Future, ah his ever so cherished sword. It wasn’t like the other swords you’d see other hunters wielding, it didn’t have any sort of fancy transformation. But Qrow was ok with that, ok with simplicity.
- it’s funny, he feels like he’s had it for lifetimes. But unfortunately due to his bad memory, even if you asked him where he got it from, he could never tell you. Sucks to have a bad memory I guess.
- he knows he got it from somewhere, somewhere familiar, and he knows he named it, but it’s too foggy for him to actually tell you.
- He gets a similar feeling with Oz, that feeling of vague familiarity. But he tends to brush it aside.
- even though Oz may be considered crazy, strange, or even scary to some people, he wasn’t anything like that to Qrow. He was nice, caring, and a pretty funny guy!
- Qrow would do anything to protect that kindness from whoever may hurt Oz. Like his life depended on it. He always was outcasted from his family, his tribe, his fellow classmates, even strangers. There was no way he’d let the one person who actually cares, die, because of his incompetency.
- and so he did, signing up and being accepted to be Oz’s personal protective hunter (fancy way of saying guard in Qrow’s eyes). It wasn’t hard to find that position, Oz was a highly respected council member, he needed to be protected anyway.
(We going lighthearted in this bc I need to stop being angsty for 2 seconds djfndndnnd)
- these two, no matter what lifetime, are the ultimate power couple
- sass(tm) from both of them
- any cuddles from my other headcanons but like 10x because Oz doesn’t wanna let go of his bird husband ever
- Qrow has to bribe or pry Oz off of him. It doesn’t always work.
- Qrow likes to call Oz a nerd when in reality he’s a huge hypocrite cuz there’s only so much you learn in history and he seems to know a lot more than that.
- Oz will say random things in a loving tone to Qrow, literally he mentioned something about bread in Mistralian and made Qrow laugh incredibly hard.
- Oz was embarrassed the rest of the day because he didn’t know that Qrow could speak Mistralian. He has made a few other comments in a dead language that he is very glad Qrow does NOT understand because there’s no way he could say that to Qrow in a language he understands without getting flustered (take that for what you will. It’s up to interpretation, personally I think its really sappy stuff but hey, imagine whatever)
- bookworms, they read to eachother
- both will give each other their weapon to fight with, even sometimes trading.
- during a small war that Oz was involved with in a previous life, Qrow gave him Decaying Future as a means to defend himself in the war.
- they normally have their weapons near one another.
- they both are normally near one another. You can’t find one without the other.
- both mischief makers, quiet, but still mischief makers.

The Remnant Branches
CH. 5 - Ash Qrow
Qrow ventures into the world where day and night are at a standstill. There, he gets stuck with a bunch of kids, and a book or two.
AO3 Link
You can kill two birds with one stone. But if those two birds are the same bird, are you really killing two birds?
-
Qrow flew right into a large rock that was hurled from below. With a caw, he flew away with it. It hurt like hell, but honestly, he was used to such inconveniences.
“Kainé! You hit that poor bird!” berated a child’s voice.
“What? It’s not my fault the damn thing came out of nowhere.” a woman said as she tore through a shadowy monster.
As Qrow recovered, he looked down below. There were four people: two young adults, and two children. There were also two floating books, one white, and the other red. The two children fought together, while the male teen and the white book fought together. The woman, whose clothing could hardly count as clothing, fought with the red book. He thought of joining in the fight to help them out, but they were taking care of the monsters, shades, he remembered, as if it were having a picnic. Not only that, they all used magic. He was happy to have found what he was looking for on his first day.
Qrow spent the rest of that first day scouting the surrounding area. Nearby, was a small village, a seaside town, a small desert civilization, a run down factory, a forest, and a village built into a cliff side. In the distance, he could see dilapidated buildings, an abandoned city in ruins. He knew that whatever happened to this world was unimaginable. He knew that if Salem won, Remnant could very well end up like that part of the world.
The first place he visited was the tavern of the village the four stayed in. His first order of business was to find out preliminary information on them. Bars were one of the best places to get info. Alcohol flowed, and information flowed with it. However, bars in small places could be either hit or miss with information. The people in such bars would either be too tight-lipped, wanting to keep their community’s secrets, or all too eager to share the latest gossip. He was all too happy to find this bar a hit. Great information, with even greater alcohol. He decided then that post-apocalyptic alcohol was the best.
“You mean you haven’t heard of them!? They’re like, only the strongest people in the world!”
“I’ve seen Grimoire Weiss and Nier take on an army of shades all alone! I wish I was as awesome as they were.”
“Kainé is soooo cool. She and Rubrum took down a shade the size of three building in five minutes flat. She even saved me from this giant shade and helped me up. I haven't washed my hand since she touched it.”
“Emil and Halua are soo adorable! And so strong too! Don’t let their looks fool you though. I heard that they took on Weiss, Nier, Kainé, and Rubrum on in a spar, and won.”
“They’re gonna save the world! Once they find The Shadowlord, we’ll be free of the shades at last!”
Qrow was having a great time. Apparently, he had showed up after a rare performance from the village’s leaders. The bar was filled with laughter and chatter. While he was chatting away with some man, he heard a roar rise from the crowd.
“Oh man! Here comes the main event!” said the man.
Qrow saw that an arm wrestling contest was going on, and the champion was one of the village leaders, the one with the straight hair. She seemed more drunk than anyone else, and did not appear particularly strong. The first opponent was a woman, a dainty thing that went down easy. Next was a beefy man. He went down with only a smudge of struggle on the champion’s part. After him was an even beefier woman. She was defeated just as easily.
“Come on! One more opponent! Who else wants to face me? You!” She pointed right at Qrow. “You’re a new face! Get over here! Let’s see how you hold up against me!”
Qrow shrunk and tried to get out of the challenge, but, the crowd pushed him forward. He may have been drunk, but still knew that it was almost never a good idea to attract attention on a mission. However, there was no good way of getting out of it, so he went to his slaughter. She sized him up and smirked. Their hands interlocked, and the match began. Qrow put up a better fight than the others. He assumes it is because of his aura helping out. But, she unleashes a burst of strength that not only seals her victory, but breaks the table they were playing on. While Qrow picks himself up, the champion raises a leg onto her chair and relishes her victory.
“Popola! Popola!” the crowd chanted. Qrow knew that there was more to this woman than meets the eye. But, pursuing her would have been illogical. He had his lead on magic, and would focus on that.
It wasn’t his first loss at arm wrestling. That was with Tai. Summer ended up winning Team STRQ’s little tournament. It was a nice memory. But, a memory is all it ultimately all was. He spent the rest of that day gathering bits and pieces of information on the group, nursing the great beer out of his canteen.
The Shadowlord and the black book, Noir, had taken the Nier’s kid sister. The two children were siblings and had lived at the mansion. Kainé had lived at the Aerie, the place built into the cliffside. Grimoire Weiss, who insisted on being referred to by his full name, and Kainé did not get along. Rubrum and Nier don’t get along. Rumor has it that Nier and Kainé are dating. Nier’s weapon is named Beastcurse. None of the info he gathers pertains to the specifics of the magic they wield.
Qrow always found sleep difficult, and the eternal sun only made it harder. He wondered why Popola was so strong. Ozpin didn’t mention anything about the people having such strength. He rested alone in a tree at the top of a hill in the village, and was grateful that it at least wasn’t cold. However, he was filled with apprehension. The previous two days had gone well. Too well for someone like him. All he could do was wait for things to inevitably go south.
-
Qrow was awoken by the sound of a scream. He quickly jumped out of the tree, but landed on his foot wrong and fell on his face. He quickly gets up and scans the area with his sword in hand. He notices that a kid is in front of him, protecting a shade.
“Don’t hurt him! He’s a good shade!” the kid pleas. Behind the child, the shade is cowering. Qrow then realizes that the two were probably just playing, and he heard laughter, not screaming.
“Don’t worry kid. If he’s a good shade, then I won’t hurt him.” He reassures as he sheaths Harbinger.
“Alright...” the kid says warily as she lowers her arms. From behind, the small shade seems to relax as well. “What were you doing sleeping in a tree anyways? Birds sleep in trees. Are you part bird or something?” the kids says, suspicious of Qrow.
“Nope, not part bird or anything.” he quickly clarifies. He’s technically not lying.
“What’s your name then, mister?” the child asks.
“Qrow.” he answers nervously. The child looks at the shade, and the shade looks back at her. Qrow knows that they know something is up.
“Ok then, Mister ‘not a bird’ Qrow. Wanna play with us?” she innocently asks, as if she weren’t just suspicious of him.
“No. No thanks, I’m good.” He says as he begins to back away.
“Sure?” she says. The shade comes forth, saying something in its odd voice as it holds out a palm full of worms. “We were just digging for worms. Don't you think that’s fun?”
“That’s, that’s good for you. I’m not interested though. I really should get going.” he lightly laughs to counteract the heaviness around him. The worms do seem enticing. The shade mumbles something again, and holds out some shiny objects. Qrow begins to sweat.
“Or maybe we could play with these shiny toys? They’re sooo shiny.” she smiles as she tempts him as she holds one up to the sun, making it sparkle brilliantly. He almost can’t handle it. He can’t handle it. With a loud caw, he transforms in an instant, and flies away.
“HA! YOU WERE RIGHT!” he hears her shout as he makes his escape. “You were right! He was magic! That’s how he lasted that long against Popola! I knew you were right!” Turning his head to look back, he sees the two dancing with each other, sharing their small victory. It was heartwarming, even if it felt like he was just being interrogated by them. However, he wonders why his avian urges were so strong. He chalks it up to his bad luck.
Since he was already flying, he decides to see if he can find that group of kids. He sees them in the plains below. And they’re riding huge, wild boars. They’re all laughing and screaming in wild joy as they head towards the town in the cliff face. However, he notices that the demeanor in the woman seems tense. He remembers that she lived there, and might have some bad memories of the place. He’s glad she had her friends with her though.
As they entered the cavern, he flew overhead and took the time to scan the town. It seemed no different than when he first saw it, save for a small gathering of people on one of the large platforms. He imagines that’s where they’re heading, but he knows he could be wrong. He perched on a wire above the group of merchants and customers.
“There they are.” One person says.
“Ok, get ready. Act like we planned.” whispers another.
“Did you say something?” asks one of the merchants.
“Huh, oh, no. I just remembered something.”
“Ah, ok.”
That’s not suspicious at all. Qrow thought to himself. He kept himself alert. The guy with the white book finally entered the little market. He hopped up the wire to see if he could find where the others were, and found them waiting at the entrance. They appeared to be chatting with each other.
Down below, he heard the book and the guy making small talk with the people there, and buying a few things.
“Everyone? Every one? Every one? Everyoneeveryoneeveryoneeveryoneeveryone…” said a guard as his voice morphed into the sound of a shade. And in a puff of smoke, he and a few others transformed into shades.
“Crap, an ambush.” Nier said.
“So it seems.” Weiss commented.
From his vantage point, Qrow could see more shades gathering around the other parts of the village. He decided then that now was the time to help.
He flies to a bridge where more shades have gathered, and with the slash of his sword, he sends them flying back. A few fall off the bridge to whatever lies below, but more shades manifest to take their place.
“Forget how to actually kill a shade, old man?” berates the female teen as she slashes through slade after shade on the other side of the bridge.
“Hey! I’m not old!” Qrow answers back.
“Then start killing them properly, or leave, dumbass. Rubrum, play Cold Steel Coffin.”
“Ooh, nice choice.” The red book compliments as she opens up and flies through her pages. “Tear those blood bags to shreds!” From her pages flows a song in an unknown tongue.
Vlee sieh tah, Vlee sieh reeh, Vlee raun stee yah, Vlee yon ston reeh. Begins the powerful, almost terrifying song. Kainé tears through the shades with even greater ferocity than before, their blood devoured by the red book as the volume intensifies.
“Kickass!” she shouts as a shade is torn to shreds, as promised. Her movements become quicker and quicker, stronger and stronger, and before Qrow can take care of even five, she’s already taken care of the rest of the shades on that bridge. “Out of my way old timer!” she says as she rushes past him.
“Kainé! Hold on!” Qrow hears a boy shout.
“Yeah, hold up!” A girl also shouts.
“We’re sorry about her.” The girl says.
“She just really gets into it when Rubrum plays a cool song.” The boy says.
“So, what’s your name? I’m Halua, and this is my twin brother.” she introduces.
“Hello, I’m Emil. It’s nice to meet you.” he says with a slight bow.
“Qrow. Nice to meet you two. We should chat later though, huh?”
“Oh, you’re right. We really should. Hm, follow me Emil.” she says.
“Okay!” he replies as he takes her hand. They proceed to walk off the bridge, and onto the empty air as if it were solid ground.
Nobody bats an eye at the two, but Qrow. The sound of a shade screaming right in front of his face scares him, and he jumps off the bridge. He turns into a bird to fly back up, but rather than his wings, he is instead brought back up by some unknown force.
“Huh? A bird?” Halua questions.
“You can turn people into birds? That’s new. Do you think you can turn me into a parrot later? I always wanted to be a colorful parrot!” Emil exclaims happily.
“Nooo. Waaaait… Qrowwww… Crowwwww… Sorry mister, I’ll let you go now!” she shouts from the center of the canyon as she releases her magical grip on him. “Let’s get back to this. Tell me when it sounds right.” she tells Emil as they toy with a glyph.
“What the hell???” he wonders. It’s the second time that day a kid guessed his magical secret. What that said about the adults in Remnant wasn’t good. Then again, it wasn’t like magic was common in Remnant.
He shifts back into a human and gets back to taking care of shades. By now, the song echoed through The Aerie for all to hear and empower. Qrow had to admit that it did help with the fighting, as it paired well with his fighting style. Despite the toughness of their armor and tendency to block, he soon finds himself flying through shade after shade at a good pace.
Everynow and then, he takes a look at one of the kids to see how they’re holding up. The villagers at the tavern had evidently placed their praise well. Nier and Weiss work as an experienced duo, efficient, clean, and powerful. Kainé and Rubrum, all Kainé really, were a shade killing machine. They are brutal, swift, and deadly. While Kainé hacks, Rubrum dances to the beat of the song as best a book can. Then it seems as if the young twins then appear to have finished their task.
“There! That’s it” Emil says excitedly.
“Alright. Applying the buff!” she announces. With an otherworldly, fear-inducing glow surrounding her, she absorbs the glyph, and Qrow finds that Harbinger is glowing as well. Looking around, he sees that Nier and Kainé’s weapons are glowing as well. A quick slash of the scythe shows what the buff was: armor nullification. Harbinger went through the armor harming the shade underneath.
“Fuck yeah!” Kainé yells with joy.
“Will she ever learn to hold her tongue around them?” Weiss wondered.
“Fuck yeah!” Emil and Halua echo as they jump with joy.
“I think it might be a little late for that, boo─ Grimoire Weiss.” Qrow corrected before he could finish.
“Well, at least someone has the decency to respectfully use my full name. Who might you be anyways?” Weiss asks
“Qrow. It looked like you guys could use some help, so here I am.” He responds.
“That’s nice of you, but─” Nier begins before being cut off by Weiss.
“Shush! No buts! We’re taking all the help we can get. Bah! Teenagers!” Weiss says as he shakes his head, or that’s what it looks like he’s doing.
“Don’t worry Weissy, we’ll be good teenagers when we grow up!” Halua says earnestly as she and Emil join them.
“But I wanna be like Kainé! She’s awesome!” Emil argues.
“Sorry Weissy, nevermind.”
“Apologize not. This old book has given up hope long ago.” he says tiredly.
“Done!” They hear Kainé probably declare as she joins them.
“Another day of honest work is complete!” Rubrum chimes as the song fades out. Slowly, they all begin to notice the ominous, dark mist that vibrates all around The Aerie.
“Rubrum! This is why you have to be more careful with the songs!” Nier reprimands.
“Oh calm down you big baby.” she tells him without a care in the world. “Like I said last time, it’s nothing we won’t be able to handle.”
“Last time?” Qrow asks.
“We were relaxing on the beach, and she was playing Repose. We even didn’t notice the giant shade in the ship.”
“Hey, things ended up alright, didn’t they?” she defended herself.
“I broke an arm! The mailman almost died! Halua was tired out for a week!”
“Well your arm’s okay now, the mailman is still alive, and Halua recovered. What’s your point?” she told him. Nier growled in frustration as he covered his face.
“Lose later Nier, we have a new friend to make.” Kainé smiled cruelly.
Before them, in the center of The Aerie, a giant shade formed. It was unlike previous shades. Its size made it in a part of a very small class of shades. It was a perfect, dark sphere. Tendrils, or perhaps tails, slithered to and fro to reveal what seemed to be an eye in the center. Its roar could be felt as it traveled through the air, rattling their bones through their flesh.
“Emil! Halua!” Weiss shouted.
“On it!” they answered, and began to manipulate a new glyph.
“Until they’re done, we’ll practice the tried and true method of concussive maintenance.” Weiss continues.
“If it worked on a grimoire, what wouldn't it work on?” Rubrum added.
“Emil and Halua.” Kainé answered.
“Dare I ask again?” Qrow dared to ask.
“Does it look like we have the time?” Weiss responded. As the monster appeared to wind up for an attack.
“Nope.”
With such a monstrosity, Qrow expected it to whip its many tentacles at them, or attack with some kind of magical energy. He expected wrong. It unleashed some kind of gas, a sickly pale green color. They all had no chance to try to avoid it.
What are you even doing here? You’re just endangering those kids. Don’t you know that, idiot? Or maybe you want bad things to happen to them? Why stop there? Make everyone as miserable as you! Oh wait, you already do that, you pathetic excuse for a human.
“I do, don’t I? That’s all I ever do, bring everyone bad luck and make them miserable. Why am I still here? I─”
“I am just a freak. I shouldn’t be here, near anyone. A monster with a cursed body like mine shouldn’t even exist…”
“Why is a broken guy like me even here? I don’t want to be here in this terrible world. It would be easier if I were gone.”
“I need to be alone. I need to be alone. They can’t turn to stone that way. If I never look at them, if I’m never close to them, my cursed eyes can't petrify them.”
“I’m just a weapon. That’s all I was ever good for. I couldn’t even protect Emil. A weapon like me shouldn’t exist. I never wanted this. I never wanted to be this...”
“I─ I─ I─ Snap out of it! Quit saying those things! Snap out of it!” Qrow yelled to the children.
“Use a song!” Weiss shouted as he fended off the shades as best he could.
“I have to find a proper one, or be given one! You know how this works!” Rubrum frustratedly replied. “God shit fuck!” she cursed as more and more shades inched closer, and closer.
“Hey, Rubrum, find one for me!” Qrow requested. All he knew he could do was protect the kids. “Weiss, try to wake them!”
“Scanning…” Rubrum said as Qrow began to attack the shades. “Searching… Found one. Ooh! She’s a beauty!” The song starts calmly enough. It gets a simple rhythm going in him, then…
Pain! Is your reward for being near me. Fate! Won't be your friend when I’m around. Blame! Me for the tragedy that follow. Grave! The situation that surround. …
Unfortunately for the armored shades, Halua’s buff was still active. They were felled easily, feeding more and more blood to the red book. More and more blood, more and more song and power, it was intoxicating.
“Blood!” she giggles. “Blood blood blood blood, blood!” She spins and twirls in ecstacy. “Make this song the end of the shades!” Qrow was happy to oblige. A tendril accidentally pierces an ally, a shade trips and runs its sword through another.
“Misfortune wins again!” Qrow laughs as he ends another shade. “I’ll bring you down! I’ll bring you all down!” he announces to his enemies.
His misfortune finally targets him when he gets unlucky and the last shade pins his cape down, causing him to fall onto Halua, waking her in the process.
“Huh?! What!?” she says, confused, having been broken out of the trance..
“I need to be alone… So my eyes won’t hurt anyone… Alone…”
“What? Emil, no, don’t say that!” she tells her brother. She then turns to the giant shade with fury in her eyes. The air becomes heavy, and the last shade runs away in fear..
“Weiss, Rubrum, get them out of here.” she orders. An image of a skeletal beast flickers around her. “Mister, get Emil for me.” He obeys, and picks up the child.
“What about you?” he asks her.
“Just get Emil to safety.” she solemnly tells him as she summons a glyph in front of her. The shade strikes it, but screeches in pain as dangerous power cackled from it in defense.
“You better come back safe too, kid.” he tells her.
“I will. Rubrum? Can you play the song? I need to be able to hear it too.”
“Sure can do. I have more than enough blood for that. And remember Halua, we’ll be with you no matter what.”
“We are a family, after all” Weiss says. Halua smiles, and the beast appears for a split second once more.
“I know.” The song begins, calm and soft with its ethereal vocalization.
Kaun mon-no ruutra, Kaun oulvadei-gyaiya, Droh fee lai-narszes, Whoul sheeg-ma rae, Restivaun, Whoul vajei hli mehg jzu, Sii-kyathrae, Whestel-ou har thehgehy, Quin-deskuel, Shoul-yaneiyan …
Soon, the song becomes not just calm and soft, but powerful and imposing as well. From the safety at the top of the canyon, the song echoes below. Qrow can see the beast flickering in and out of reality more and more.
“Earthly Zenith of Modernity, The uncontrollable might of solitons, The spiritus that threatens to devour all, Avenge and atone in the name of all that is accursed! Number Six!” Halua yelled as she activated the glyph. “Deconstruct!” The beast appears from behind her, and consumes her with a bone-chilling cry.
“What is that?” Qrow asks in terror with his mouth agape. Emil awoke and jumped out of his arms.
“It’s my sister, Number Six, The Ultimate Weapon. We were made to be weapons long ago.” Emil explains as he faces his sister, sensing the intense and unparalleled magic.
“What you are witnessing is perhaps the most powerful magic in all the world, much more powerful than even a grimoire.” Weiss reveals as The Ultimate Weapon latches onto the large shade and tries to tear through its protective tendrils.
“Mmnnn,” Kainé groans, “What the hell happened?” Number Six lets out a piercing screech as she jumps to cling to a cliff, and fires a beam of energy that the giant shade just barely avoids. The spot where the beam hit is pulverized into nothingness for who knows how deep. Quickly, Kainé jumps up to see her. “Halua! Halua! Goddammit!”
“Is she gonna be alright?” Qrow hopes she will be.
“She will recover, just like last time.” Weiss answers confidently. “But...”
Finally, she had the shade cornered. She howls as the song begins its closing. Cowering in horror, the shade makes a last ditch attempt to win, firing a volley of magic at Number Six. She is unphased as The Ultimate Weapon activates its true might. A bright light begins to grow from where they are. At a steady pace, it swells and devours the shade and everything else in the vicinity, turning it all into nothing. When The Ultimate Weapon deactivates, an unflinching Halua, eyes glowing a dull red, stands where Number Six once was.

“Are you sure you guys are alright with me being around?”
“Yeah old timer, we’re sure.” Kainé assures him.
“It’ll be only for a few days anyways, like you said.” Nier adds.
“Besides, fuckers like us have to stick together.” she reasons.
“And if the world can’t handle us, we’ve gotta find other fuckers who can!” Rubrum exclaims joyously.
“In a sense, we create a world of our own.” Weiss states.
“That’s… a nice way to think of it. A world of our own, one that’ll accept a bad luck charm like me. I like the sound of that.”
-
Qrow had arrived right in the path of a large rock that was hurled from below. He let out a pained caw as it struck him as he fell. It hurt like hell, but honestly, he was used to such inconveniences.
“Kainé! You hit that poor bird!” berated a child’s voice.
“What? It’s not my fault the damn thing came out of nowhere.” a woman said as she tore through a shadowy monster and looked up. “Wait, that’s not a bird. It’s a guy?”
“It is!” Emil gasped as he saw that Kainé was indeed right. “Don’t worry mister, I’ll save you!” With a wave of his staff, he slowed Qrow’s descent and uprighted him. Lightly, he landed on the ground. “Hmm?” Emil said as he cocked his uncanny head in confusion.
Qrow, meanwhile, realized that this was where the voice of the child was coming from. But he had little time to ponder the realization, as he sensed an enemy nearby, a skill honed from all his years as a huntsman. Swiftly, he unsheathes his sword and slashes at the shade to send it backwards. The lady in lingerie, Kainé, followed up and stabbed the shade in the chest, pinning it to the ground.
“Gawk later Emil.” she tells him as she extracts her sword and moves onto the next enemy.
“R─Right!” he says in an embarrassed tone. “Sorry mister!” he apologizes as he returns to fighting.
“Don’t worry about it kid.” Qrow replies as he joins the fray to help finish off the last of the little shadowy demons.
“So, who the hell are you?” Kainé asks him.
“Qrow.” he answers.
“A better question is, how does a man end up so high in the sky?” the book inquired.
“Ooh, I know that! It was magic!” Emil excitedly answered. “You were the bird Kainé hit huh?”
“Yeah, and it hurt.” an irritated Qrow said as he took a quick drink from his flask. Normally, it would be good to hide his little talent, but there was no reason to try to hide it now that the kid could sense the magic.
“Well damn. That sucks.” she replies nonchalantly.
“Weren’t you ever taught some manners?” he jabs.
“You’re wasting your time with this hussy. Manners are as foreign to her as proper attire.”
“Why don’t you two go and do whatever the fuck it is old timers like you do and shut up?” she jabs back.
“Hey Emil, how were you able to tell it was magic anyways?” Nier asks as they continue arguing. He is mostly unphased by their conversation, and the fact that the man is walking with them to the boat, even though he could just leave. A man falling out of the sky and joining them hardly compared to a kid getting consumed by his weaponized sister, and then joining him.
“Hey! I’m not even that old!”
“And my age is a symbol of my infinite wisdom and arcane power!”
“I just sensed it. It’s different from Weiss’ magic though, and Kainé’s and mine too.”
“Weird.” Nier commented. “Hey, uh, Qrow?”
“What now?”
“What kind of magic do you have?”
“Hell if I know. It was a gift from a friend of mine.” he answers. “What about the rest of you?”
“Mine is from my sister. We were experimental weapons.” he answers solemnly.
“Wha─??”
“It is a sad, and long story.” Weiss says.
“Still, it’s pretty cool that you’re an ultra powerful weapon though.” Nier says.
“Yeah, it’s pretty fucking kickass.” Kainé adds on. “Way cooler than some boring old book.”
“Aww, you guys...” he says shyly.
“I’ll have you know that my magic is far older than you can even fathom, hussy. But I unfortunately cannot answer your question because someone,” he paused as he looked specifically at Nier, “found it acceptable to perform concussive maintenance on The Grimoire Weiss.”
“I said I was sorry like a million times already.” Nier exaggerated.
“You are fortunate you have my mercies.”
“As always Wiess, as always. But, we’re here.” Nier says as they arrive at the boat.
“I’ll go ahead and scout the area. That tower place, I’m guessing? I’ll let you know if I see anything unusual.” Qrow tells them as he shifts to his avian form.
“Hey, wait, don’t you want to─ Aww, he’s gone.” Emil lamented as Qrow flew away.
-
Qrow scans the backside of the structure. It’s a bunch of shoddy workmanship. Loose planks of wood, metal poles, and cheap ladders are what make up this sorry excuse. But oddly, it does not appear to be old. In fact, it seemed like a recent addition to the place. Nothing is rusted, and none of the wood is rotten either. A few shades even jumped about, and nothing creaks or breaks. It is suspicious, and screams that this is a set up.
Regardless, he defeats about half the shades that lingered on the platforms built into the stone by the time the boat arrives. They’re tougher than the ones on the plain, but they fall just the same, into a dark smoke, and then into nothing. Despite how uncanny it was that slicing into them felt somewhat akin to slicing aura, they were otherwise oddly reminiscent of grimm. What wasn’t reminiscent of a grimm was their ability to bleed.
“Damn, save some for the rest of us!” Kainé yells. “Some of us have a bone to pick with the fuckers!”
“Quit crying and hurry up then!” he shouts to her down below. “Damn kid…” he complains as he takes a small drink from his flask. For all he knows, he won’t be able to refill it anytime soon.
Kainé swiftly jumps up a few platforms above him and starts her slaughter. While Nier and Weiss slowly make their way up, taking care of the few shades that happen to appear, Emil floats up to Qrow.
“So mister, where are you from?” he asks curiously as he floats a few feet away from the platform.
“A place called Remnant.”
“Well that’s an odd name. What’s it a remnant of?”
“It’s just what we’ve called it. Don’t know why either.” Qrow answered as he climbed up a ladder.
“Oh… Well how about your name? Did you get it after the magic, or was it a cool coincidence?”
“It was the name I was born with. Can’t say if I know it’s a coincidence though.” Qrow quickly replied.
“Emil,” interjected Weiss, “leave the poor man alone. He appears to be tired of your barrage of questioning.”
“It’s fine.” he responded. “I’m used to this kinda thing.”
“If you insist.” the book replied in his snotty tone. Something about it seemed familiar, but he couldn’t quite put it on his finger yet.
“Are you sure? I don’t wanna be a bother.”
“If I can handle my two little girls, I can handle a single kid. Don’t worry about it. But─” He was cut off by a loud and excited gasp from Emil.
“Oh my god! You have two daughters? I bet they’re adorable!”
“What? No. I mean, they are adorable, but they’re not my daughters. They’re my nieces.”
“You just said they were your kids, dumbass.”
“How about you mind your own business?”
“How about I─” she began before her heel got caught in a gap in the planks of wood, causing her to fall backwards. “Ack! Fucking bitch! Stupidass wood!” she cursed as she got up and angrily punted the guilty board.
“Kainé! Look out!” Emil warns her.
“What?” she turns to see a shade about to strike her, and that it is too late to react. Ooh it’s gonna be my turn soon, Sunshine! Bwahahaha!
To her surprise, and Tyrann’s, they don’t feel the slash of the shade’s sword. Qrow is in front of her, blocking the attack. He knocks away the weapon, and brings the shade to its demise.
“I’ll be up top.” is all he tells her before he flies away.
“Hey, wait up! I’ll join you!” Emil says as he follows the black bird.
“Did you scare him off already?” Kainé hears the book assume.
“What happened?” Nier asks as he and the grimoire neared her.
“Shut up. He just went off on his own for no damn reason.”
“Hmm. Odd guy huh?” Nier asked no one, as Kainé and Weiss were already beginning the hour’s bickering.
Meanwhile, Emil chased after the man, wondering why he seemed so insistent on being alone. He didn’t seem like a bad guy who had anything bad to hide. Then again, looks could be deceiving. Emil knew that very well. Emil concluded that it was perhaps something about himself the man was hiding, maybe something he was ashamed of. Kainé was like that at first, and he probably would have really been like that without her.
“I’m here!” Emil announced once he caught up with Qrow. “Man, you fly fast.”
“Wouldn’t you rather be with your friends, kid?” he questioned the kid.
“Ohh, I don’t mind. I just wouldn’t want you to be alone. Being alone sucks most of the time, huh?”
“Meh. I’m used to it.” he waved dismissively, taking a small drink from his flask.
“Still, it’s better to be friends than alone.”
“Not always, kid.”
“Not always?! It’s always better to be with friends!” Emil shouted, to which Qrow winced at the young boy’s volume. “Oh, sorry.”
“It’s fine. But I just prefer to be alone.” Qrow said as he took a seat.
“Why?” Emil asked. He could see that Qrow was thinking.
“Back in my world,” he began, “everyone has a sort of ‘magic’ more or less unique to them. We call it a semblance, and mine is Misfortune. It brings bad luck to anyone nearby. I’m sure you can see why now.”
“Hmm, I do see. … Well, that’s alright. I’d still rather be here with you than let you be alone.” He could see that Qrow froze for a moment, as if the words were somehow familiar, then he regained his composure and let out a short chuckle.
“You’re a funny kid, you know?” Qrow joked.
“Im serious! I know I only sound like a little kid, but I’m older than you!” Emil fussed.
“Yeah, let me guess, a thousand years old?”
“Mmm,” Emil pondered, “somewhere around there.” Qrow looked at him as if he were telling an obvious lie.
“Well, I guess I should explain. You told me something about you, and I’ll tell you something about myself. It’s not a very happy story though.” Emil sat down to tell the tale of him and his sister.
“And so, Emil and Halua Grimm became the most powerful weapons in the world.” He finished wistfully.
“I’m sorry you had to go through that.” Qrow said solemnly.
“Yeah… But at least it led me to Nier, Weiss, and Kainé. I wouldn’t trade my time with them for anything. Okay! Now tell me something about yourself!” Qrow was shocked by the sudden shift in mood, but was happy to entertain the child.
“My name is Qrow, with a “q”, and my last name is Branwen, though that’s just the name of the tribe I grew up in. So, would your name happen to be spelled with two “m”s?”
“Yeah. Me and Halua always wondered why though. Do you think you could know why?”
“Well, like this world has Shades, my world has Grimm. I think it’s just a coincidence though.” Qrow says as he takes a sip. “Besides, you’re a hell of a lot better than any Grimm back home.” It was hard to discern, but Qrow could tell he was happier than before. That made him happier too. “So, were your eyes silver, by any chance?”
“No,” Emil began somewhat shyly, “they were more of a really light purple. Though, I think they were a different color before I gained my petrification, but I can't remember what color exactly if they were different.. Could people with silver eyes petrify things in your world?”
“They could petrify Grimm. That’s about it though. But, people with silver eyes are said to be destined to become great warriors.”
“I think Nier said that Yonah had silver eyes.” Emil mentioned.
"What about Yonah?" They heard Nier say as he climbed up to where the two were sitting. At their own paces, the two got up.
"That she has silver eyes, right? Qrow said that in his world, they become awesome fighters!"
"Hmm… I don’t think she’s fit for the warrior lifestyle. But, if it’s a sigh that she'll live a longer life, I'll take it. But until then,"
"We keep on going, yeah, yeah. Let's hurry up already." Kainé interrupted as she kicked the rock blocking their entrance out of the way. "I haven't killed enough shithole shades for today."
"The hussy is right that we should move along. The sooner we take care of things, the better." Weiss stated as he ushered them in.
Once inside, the place was virtually unchanged since Nier's last visit. Kainé didn't think much of the place. Weiss seemed shocked that this was the place where he was stored. Emil, however, was clearly enamored by the place.
"Wowww… this place is pretty, isn't it?" He praised quietly as he floated over towards the center where the towering tree stood. There, warm sunlight filtered through, alleviating the coldness of rusting metal and decaying concrete.
"Hmm. It would be a nice place to relax for a little bit." Qrow responds as he follows Emil. It's quiet and calm there. He thinks it could have been a hotel, based on the layout.
"Not while shades are here though." Nier commented as the soulless monsters readied to fight.
Promptly, the group got to culling the local shade population. Swords galore, magic, and a favored spear, all end the lives of the shadowy entities. Some are even left petrified.
"Emil, you can still petrify shit?" Kainé asks him out of curiosity.
"Yeah, I, um..." he begins as if feeling guilty.
"Sweet. Smashing stone shades really hits the spot." Kainé smiled cruelly as she reduced a statue to rubble. "Ahh, that felt bitchin'."
Briefly, Qrow contemplated if he should allow himself to cuss. On one hand, he would feel a lot better. On the other, he was just starting to be able to control his tongue around Ruby and Yang, and he didn't want to undo his hard work. It took a lot more effort than he would have wanted to admit.
"Hey, Qrow?" Nier called to get his attention.
"Yeah?" Qrow called back before tripping over a stair step and hitting his head. "Fucking stair!" he snarled. Cussing was fine so long as it wasn't around Ruby and Yang, he decided. If he wasn't around them, it was alright. He then noticed the shade above him.
"I've got you!" Emil shouted. Swiftly, it was petrified, and then destroyed by Kainé.
"Careful old timer." Kainé warned as she helped him up. "Can't have your ass dying on us."
"Such a kind soul you have, helping an old man like me." he teased.
"Pft." she responded as she rolled her eyes. She heard a snicker come from Weiss and snapped her neck at him. "Got somethin to say, book?"
"Oh, to a kind, young woman such as yourself? Heavens no." He replied.
"If you say so, Weissy." she glared at him with an innocent grin. As they continued their trademark bickering, with Emil joining in to unwittingly embarrass both of them, Nier returned to his conversation with Qrow.
"So, what else can you tell me about those silver eyed fighters?" Nier questioned as he stabbed another shade through it's armor.
"Back in my world, they're a myth at most to many. But, they do exist. With their eyes alone, they can take down hordes of Grimm. I guess the equivalent here would be Shades."
"I’d just be happy if Yonah could even go a day without needing a nap, if I'm being honest."
"What's wrong with her?"
"The Black Scrawl. There's no cure for it yet, but I'll take any kind hope I can get. As long as she's alive, even if it's risky like this, I'll be happy."
Qrow knew that there was probably no way the power of silver eyes would be in this world, but who honestly knew. Besides, he also knew that people needed all the hope they could get, even if he himself has mostly given up on the notion of hope..
"It's also genetic. Either of your parents had silver eyes?" Qrow asks
"Well, my mom did. I got my dad's eyes, but we both have his hair color. … Hmm, they were both great people. My mom was a good fighter too." He said fondly. “But when the Scrawl started to take over her, she had weird dreams. She said she saw weird but huge rectangular structures that went high into the sky, and things that moved on wheels at unnatural speeds."
"It sounds like she saw a city. Maybe one from before whatever happened that made this world like this." Qrow commented as he and Kainé slashed away at a huge shade.
"She also… she also had nightmares. In them, she fought these pale white beasts with glowing red eyes she said she fought them with incredible powers, powers like Emil's…" Nier had never really connected the dots before. It was just something he had never considered, always too busy with other things to reminisce about his mother like this.
No response. It was quiet.
"Huh?" He said in confusion as he looked around. Kainé and Qrow were gone. "Emil! Get close to me!"
"Huh? What?! Where'd they go?!" Emil questioned as he noticed the disappearance of his friends.
"It could be a shade, one with powers previously unknown to us. We should stay close to each other." Weiss advised.
"Right!" Emil nodded. Cautiously, they circled about, looking all over to see if they could spot anything unusual, and fending off the few shades that remained on the floor..
"I can sense some strong magic nearby, but I cannot pinpoint where. Can you two here us!" Emil shouted out.
"Perhaps w─" Weiss's words were interrupted by a sudden crash that caused the floor to give way beneath Nier.
"I got you!" Emil said as he lunged for. Nier. But, his efforts were for naught. He too was mysteriously swept away by a shadow. Thinking fast, Nier stabbed his sword into the wall to slow his fall.
“What kind of shade is that?! What did it do to them?!” he shouted as he landed.
“We are in the presence of a powerful shade, one capable of using incredible magic. They’re still alive, I know that much. If we kill it, it’s magic should be undone!” Weiss replied.
“All we have to do is find it then.” Easier said than done, but, it would be done.
Silently, they were back to back, waiting in anticipation for an attack. Nier was tense, ready to pounce at the vile shade. Weiss readied a sealed verse, taut and set to pin down the enemy for the kill. Nier looked up, left, right, everywhere he could look, except for below himself, where his own shadow betrayed him.
-
With heavy breathing, Qrow opened his eyes to be surrounded by darkness. It wasn’t the darkness of a moonless night in the middle of nowhere. That did not even compare. This was an advanced darkness very few things in the world could compare to. In front of him lay an unknowing expanse, a field of nothingness, a─
“Turn around, dumbass.”
“Huh? Oh.” Qrow sighed as he stopped flailing about. There was Kainé and Emil. She was lulling about as Emil did… something magic related. They all floated in the void, but were otherwise perfectly fine.
“Make yourself comfortable, or whatever. Emil will get us out soon enough. I swear to hell I’m gonna tear the little shit stain that did this to fucking shreds.” she hissed.
“I take it this isn't a thing that happens everyday?”
“No.” Emil answers as he fiddles with a glyph. “The craziest things tend to be giant, monstrous shades every now and then. But we always take care of them!”
“Yeah, we take real good care of them, don't we, sunshine?” a cold, cruel, and sharp voice says from the unknown. Qrow knows that this voice is dangerous. He can sense it, so he held Harbinger out, prepared to strike. Emil notices the voice too, and hurries with his magic. Kainé is unphased, and rolls her eyes at the remark
“Show yourself!” Qrow shouted into the void. For a moment, he thinks it is the monster that captured them.
“Hmm? Ooh, they can hear me. Finally! Do you know how boring it can get just talking to one person? Real fucking boring.”
“Ugh, do you ever shut up? Like really? I could cut your tongue out and you’d still find a way to talk more than anyone else.” Kainé complains. But, she is justified in her grievance. “Hm? Oh. That’s just the shade that lives in me. Just ignore his bitchass.”
“Hello mister shade!” Emil greets innocently.
“You’re supposed to tell this one to fuck off, Emil.”
“Oh. Okay. Fuck off mister shade!” he corrects, and resumes his work.
“Adorable.” Tyrann deadpans. “So, dear black bird. What sort of atrocities are there in your home. I’d kill to know.”
“There’s the kinds of things that would kill you first.” he retorts. Qrow didn’t like this thing. If this was the standard for shades, then it was a good thing they were being slaughtered.
“Fat chance, but that sounds like my kind of place. Tell me, is the death slow and painful?” Qrow is disgusted as the thing laughs.
“You get used to it after a while.” Kainé shrugs. Before Qrow can respond, they’re on the roof, where Grimoire Weiss also is.
“It worked!” Emil triumphantly shouts
“GAH! Don't sneak up on me like that! You’re all fortunate I can’t get a heart attack!” Weiss berated.
“Where’s Nier?” Kainé demanded.
“Beyond this door, but, it is blocked by a magical barrier. If we all focus our attack on it, we should be able to break it.” Weiss explained, and on the count of three, magic assaulted the door Nier was behind, breaking it and the barrier. They could see the shadow descending down onto Nier.
“YOU WILL DIE YOU FILTHY BROTHER KILLER!” it screamed.
Thankfully, Emil was quick enough to cast a protective barrier around him. It floated in place as it attempted to break the barrier. Quickly, Qrow rushed at the thing, except he could see that it wasn’t exactly just anything. It was Hazel, possessed by a shade? Qrow had a million and one questions, but he had no time for them. He kicked the monstrous man and fired a bullet to his chest. He knew it wouldn’t be enough to take Hazel out, but it was enough to send him flying, flying back into the shadows.
“We’re not too late, are we?” Emil wondered.
“Nope. Just in time.” Nier responded gratefully as Qrow helped him up.
“Hold your conversing for later. More pressing issues are at hand.” Weiss reminded them as he floated back over to Nier.
“Right. Let’s just stay close together.” Qrow ordered. “He can't take us all on at once.”
With great tenseness, they all cautiously made their way out of the shrine. They eyed every shadow they passed, and relied mostly on ranged attacks to dispatch any brave shades that dared to attack. Only when they finally left the shrine and onto the boat did they all begin to feel safe, all but Qrow. Something wasn't sitting right with him, and it wasn't just Hazel appearing. He couldn't make a sound conclusion yet, but he knew he would in time
-
“That guy, he was possessed too, but it was different somehow.” Kainé revealed.
“I have some information that might help make sense of things. We should try to settle down first though.” Qrow suggested.
“Agreed.” Weiss concurred. “It has been a long day, and we’ll be much safer in the sunlight and the open field.”
With that, resident expert campers Kainé and Emil decided on a good spot to set up on. While Emil got the fire ready, which didn't take long thanks to magic, Kainé reaped some fresh mutton. Before long, a fresh meal was served. It was plain, of course, but it was warm, edible food, that didn't taste like an abomination, which Nier was particularly grateful for.
“Old timer,” Kainé began as she bit into a piece of meat, “what were you gonna say about that possessed guy?”
“He’s from your world, isn’t he?” Weiss guessed. Qrow nodded his head yes, and swallowed a bite.
“Hazel. He works for the woman that controls the monsters of my world. I’m sure that at least one of his goals is to get in the way of my mission.” Qrow said with annoyance. But, if anything, he expected Hazel or someone to show up sooner and pose a problem.
“Why would he focus on me then?” Nier wondered. “It’d make more sense for him to target you then.”
“Maybe it was the shade that possessed him?” Emil Suggested.
“Could be. It looked like the shade in him had a lot of control.” Kainé answered. She remembered how the massive fiend was covered almost head to toe in the shade pattern. Filthy brother killer, huh? Sounds like someone was having a lot of fun before we even came along. A man after your own heart, ey sunshine?
“But…” she continued, “he didn’t exactly seem out of control either.”
“Now that I think about it, the eyes seemed familiar. Remember those stone guardians that imprisoned you, Weiss?”
“Not fondly. It was hardly how a Grimoire such as myself should be greeted.” Weiss complained. “But, yes, why?”
“Remember that one of them had glowing red eyes? His had that glow to them.”
“I see now. My former wardens were siblings, and it appears as if one of them survived our initial attack and wants revenge.”
“And that would be a cause Hazel would sympathize with. I could be that they're in sync, rather than one of them being in control.” Qrow murmured as the gears in his head turned. Shades and Grimm appeared to have some similarities, so perhaps Salem had taken interest in that. After all, what better way to learn about the monsters than to become one?
"There's just one problem though, why would a shade have a brother? Shades don't have family." Emil reminded them.
"Just as I am a product of ancient magic that is unknown today, perhaps they are too. They may very well just be a special case of rare, ancient magic influencing an archaic pair of shades." Weiss reasoned.
Wanna tell them the truth? I wanna see the looks on their faces when they realize just what they've been killing! Ha ha haa!
"Doesn't matter. They're our enemy now." Kainé tells them firmly.
"Right. It doesn't matter what kind of shade they are. They're still a shade, and we have to kill them before they kill us." Nier affirmed after taking one last bite and letting out a long yawn.
"... You three get some sleep. Me and the book,"
"Grimoire Weiss." he interrupted to correct.
"Me and little Weissy Weiss here will keep watch." Qrow taunted. Qrow had to say he felt proud of himself when he saw the grimoire's reaction. It was like ruffling up an Atlesian, which always made him feel better.
"Oh joy. Another bane to my existence." Weiss commented sarcastically.
"Will you shut the fuck up already. We’re trying to sleep." Kainé
"And when you want some sleep, let me know. Don't feel bad or anything either. I hardly even need any sleep." Emil directed at Qrow.
"Sure thing." he answered.
As the hours progressed, Qrow and Weiss managed to turn civil with one another as Qrow sipped out of his flask every now and then. From Weiss, Qrow learned that blood and words were the focuses of the grimoire's magic. Blood was the physical component of the magic, and words were where the power resided. Although, the words used were a mystery much like the script that occasionally accompanied it.
In turn, Qrow shared the scant information he knew about magic. The most common magic of his world was elemental, the magic that belonged to the maidens. Then there was Oz. His powers included the elements as well. A simple way to understand the rest of his magic was that it concerned energy, the flow, transfer, and magnitude of it. A specific portion of that ability was given to him and his sister to aid them in their little parlor trick. Upon their deaths, that power would return to him.
And then there was the depraved woman known as Salem. The full extent of her powers was unknown to him. Power over the Grimm was an obvious magic of hers. He imagined her abilities included the elements as well, since it seemed to be a common magic. Beyond that, he could only guess with uncertainty.
“So, what about the magic that made you a book? I doubt you were always a grimoire.”
“Truth be told, I do not know if I ever was anyone or anything else. The best theory I have is that it involves humans of the old world. But, for what purpose I was intended to serve or how exactly I came to be, it is all hardly of any importance now.”
“Now?” Qrow wondered. The book looked around to make sure the kids were truly asleep.
“When Nier beat me out of my slumber, I only had my knowledge, no memories to speak of. Without him and my memories, I still could have done as I so pleased, but I did not because I couldn’t just let him end up hurt. And then it just so happened that our goals aligned. And then came the Shadowlord and Grimoire Noir. They almost succeeded in using me for what I can only assume was my purpose, but I eventually came to my senses thanks to a certain foul mouth. I didn’t want to leave them, you see.”
“Well aren’t you a big softie?” Qrow teased. He had a feeling the book would have rolled his eyes if he could have.
“You are a menace, second only to Kainé. But, I suppose I am. She is much the same. Therefore, I imagine you are much the same, hmm?” the grimoire accused.
“... I guess so.” Qrow admitted. “Can’t say it always feels good.”
“I imagine so.” The book commented as the man took the last drink of his canteen. “While it has been nice talking to someone who isn’t a moody teen, I’m sure you need some sleep.”
“Yeah. Some sleep sounds good.” He said as he gently awoke Emil, and took his place to rest for the “night.”
-
“So, where to next?” Qrow asked as he served himself a piece of mutton seasoned with nearby herbs courtesy of Emil.
“Back to the village. That was the best lead I had, and nothing came out of it. So I’ll have to see if Devola and Popola have any new information for me.” Nier answered.
“Me and Emil will be around then. See you two in a bit.”
“You two aren’t gonna go with us?” Qrow wondered.
“Yeah, the shitfaced villagers don’t really like us.” Kainé answered.
“So?”
“Devola and Popola thought it would be best if we stayed away so we didn’t scare them or anything.” Emil replied sadly.
“What? Do they own the place.”
“No, they do not, but─” Weiss was about to explain before being cut off.
“Who cares then. Come on Kainé, I never took you as someone who followed the rules like that stick in the mud over there.” Qrow taunted, referring to the book in the air.
“Alright then. Emil, we’re going to get in that dumbass village.” she said with finality.
“But what about the guards?” he asked, tilting his head.
“Hmm… Remember what I said about making people feel sorry?” she questioned him with a sinister smile.
“I do not like that look, hussy.”
“Fuck you.” she spat at the book and turned to Qrow. “And we have just the perfect prop.”
-
Two guards are stationed atop the gate see Nier and his friends rush to the gate. It’s difficult to tell, but one of the two outsides appeared to be holding a blob of black in their hands.
“Oh god it’s them again.” says one.
“What do we do? Popola said they wouldn’t be a problem.” said the other.
“Okay, let’s just remind them. Maybe they forgot.” guard A suggested doubtful they indeed forgot.
“Did you forget they have magic?!” guard B shouted quietly and fearfully as they neared.
“Shit.”
“Hey! You gotta let us in!” Nier shouted.
“Please, we have to help this poor bird!” Emil begged as the black bird twitched in his boney hands.
“I just couldn’t leave it to die at the hands of a shade,” Kainé began innocently, “Just like when I saved you two from that giant shade.” Her voice had added just a bit of edge to it, enough for the guards to feel the weight of her words.
“Or like when I helped fight the Shadowlord when everyone else ran away! Or when Kainé saved Yonah when no one else could!” Emil added.
“Won’t you please let us in? All so we can help this poor little birdy here?” At that moment, the crow let out a wheeze of a caw. The guards could not still help but feel somewhat threatened. But, despite this, they conceded.
“Fine. Just… neh. Nevermind.” One said with defeat.
“Thank you so very much.” Kainé smiled.
“Yeah, thank you mister guards!” Emil thanked genuinely. “Don’t you worry little birdy, we’ll fix you up in no time.” he cooed.
“Thanks guys!” Nier waved as they passed through the gate. They all tried to hide their giggling as they made their way to nier’s home.
“Well, that went better than I imagined.” Weiss admitted. “And here I thought you were going to directly threaten them.”
“That was plan B.” Kainé told him.
“Of course it was.” he deadpanned.
“Cheer up. You guys’ll finally, really meet Yonah. She’s always wanted to thank you two properly.” Nier told them.
“Oh I’m so excited! Should we surprise her?” Emil suggested.
“Umm, probably not. She’ll probably faint. Okay, just wait here for a moment.” He said as they got to the front of the home, and he quickly went inside. After making sure none of the villagers were looking, Qrow turned back into his human form.
“Excited?” he asked the two.
“Eh, sure.” Kainé shrugged with nonchalance. But, she could not hide her smile.
“I am! Do you think she remembers what we looked like? Does my scarf look alright? I want to make a good impression.” Emil worried.
“I don’t really think she’ll care about that, kid. But,” he began as he fixed the green scarf, “it looks fine.”
“Alright come on in.” Nier said nervously. “Sorry if it looks messy, I tried to clean up a little but,”
“I’m so happy you’re all here!” Yonah shouted, interrupting her brother. “It’s nice to finally get the chance to talk with you two!” she said to Emil and Kainé.
“It’s nice to officially meet you Yonah.” Emil greeted.
“Yeah. If Nier’s not gonna shut up about you, we might as well meet you.” Kainé reasoned.
“And it’s nice to meet you too, mister Qrow. I’m glad Nier has another friend for me to meet!”
“No problem kid. It’s nice to meet you too.” he replied. She was an adorable little thing, reminding him of Ruby with her bubbly demeanor. It was also obvious she was her brother’s kid sister. They had that same white hair, and a similar facial structure. And now that he could see her eyes, they were indeed silver. But, it was likely that didn’t mean anything.
“Do you guys want a drink or anything?” Nier offered.
“How about I make them something! Nier says I make great food!” she beamed. Behind her, her brother’s eyes went wide with fear, an emotion any of them had rarely seen.
“No! I’ll buy something!” he quickly interjected. “It’s a special day. We should buy them some food from the village. You guys’ll like that, right?” he said as if it were a plea.
“Sure.” Kainé said indifferently. While she had heard of Yonah’s atrocious cooking, she wasn’t a wimp and would have taken some of her cooking just fine. But, she figured Nier could use a break.
“I’m fine with that.” Emil answered. While he too had heard of her cooking, he doubt he would have minded it anymore.
“... I’ll try some of your cooking.” Qrow told her. If Nier’s reaction was anything to go by, it was a very bad decision. But, he couldn’t stand to see her face droop down a little, even if it meant suffering a single poor meal. He was sure it couldn’t be that bad though.
“I’ll go to the market real quick then.” Nier said as he made his way to the door.
“Or, how about you let me and the grimoire go. You kids should stay here and have some fun.” Qrow suggested.
“By my word he can think! We’ll be back soon then. Don’t tear the house down.” Weiss quickly agreed before Nier could say no.
“No promises Weissy!” Yonah shouted as she waved a quick goodbye.
“Yeah Weissy, no promises.” Kainé teased. Once outside, they could hear the lively and joyful commotion as it just barely escaped the walls.
“A rare moment of peace and quiet, I must thank you for that at least.” Weiss thanked.
“I just didn’t want them to think I’d run with the money.” Qrow reasoned.
“Believe it or not, they’re rather trusting.”
“And it hasn’t come back to bite you yet?”
“No, surprisingly. Though I suppose that should be cause for concern. Well, there’s nothing we can do about it now.” Weiss dismissed as they passed the fountain, absent of Devola for once.
“Well, did you notice anything odd about the back of the building as we climbed up it?”
“Hmm… I can’t say that I do. All looked as a rock face should.”
“Even with the ladders and wooden planks?”
“Well of course! How else─ Ooh, I see! Based on the location, it all should have rotted or rusted away.” Weiss finally realized.
“But it wasn’t.”
“Begging the question of who set it there for us…”
“Any idea who that might be?” Qrow asked.
“Well, Popola said it was near a trade route, so it’s possible traders built it.”
“But why would they?” Qrow asked.
“Why indeed. There was no other activity in the shrine save for us and the shades. My, this is a most concerning conundrum.” Weiss worried. “But, a small break from that is in order. The market awaits us, and I doubt you know what they want.”
“And that is also what I brought you for. See, I can think.”
“Indeed you can.” Weiss replied. All in all, the book was rather surprised by the man. He was much more capable and intelligent than he looked or let on.
After gathering a few items, some healthy fruits, a few vegetables, some juice, and a bit of seasoned meat, they began to make their way back to the small home.
“So, any idea on who could set you all up?” Qrow asked.
“If someone is in fact steering us onto a path of their creation, I do not know who it could be. Such a person, or group, would have to have quite the amount of resources and power to do so, as I imagine they would have been doing so for some time.” Weiss answered.
“Yeah, there is the chance it could just be some odd coincidence or some rare natural phenomenon that preserved the metal and wood. But still, I’ve got a feeling something’s up.” Qrow reasoned. His instincts tended to be rather good after a lifetime of honing them.
“As do I. But, I believe we should not mention this to Nier and them. They’re all stressed enough as is, and this may not even be a real concern.” Weiss suggested. His unparalleled wisdom told him it would not be a bad idea to suspect some foul play.
“If you say so. In the meantime, I’ll be doing a bit of recon. Hold these.” he said as he handed Weiss the groceries, placing them in a magical hand.
“Such a waste of my talents.” he huffed. “But if you could, give Popola a visit at the library on the hill? Tell her what happened and see if she has any new information would you?” he requested.
“Consider it done Weissy.” Qrow taunted.
“I will enjoy seeing you eat the lass’s cooking.” he said ominously before Qrow left and he reentered the home.
-
After scanning the town for half an hour, Qrow had found nothing of interest, save for a shiny coin. He was sure it likely wasn’t worth much though. He then made his way to the library at the top of the hill. Once inside, he could see that it was a rather small library, but all things considered, impressive. A number of patrons were scanning the walls of their contents. He asked one of them to point him to Popola, and told him where she was.
Just as he stepped onto the stairs, he could have sworn he saw Ironwood. He looked back for a moment, and saw that no one was looking at the books by the stairs. Children’s books, by the looks of it. Qrow laughed at his mind playing such a trick on him. Qrow had no affinity for men like him, but, Ironwood was not a bad man. Not exactly a good one either but the same could be said for many. At the very least, he was easy on the eyes and a decent drinking buddy, and very fun to rile up.
After knocking on the door and waiting for an answer, he entered when Popola told him to come in. In there were two women, twins by the looks of it. The main difference was their auburn hair, more red than brown though. One had slightly messy hair, with it jutting out in some places, while the other’s was perfectly straight.
“Hmm? You’re a new face. I was kinda expecting Nier.” said the one with messy hair to her sister.
“I’m Popola, and this is my sister Devola. Is there anything we can help you with?” The twin at the desk asked.
“Yeah, I’m a friend of Nier’s.”
“Oh, is that so? I’m glad then.” Devola said.
“He needs all the help he can get. So, what was it you needed?” Popola added.
The two seemed innocent enough, but Qrow could just feel that something was up with them. Though, he could not tell if it was something good or bad. Time would tell.
“Nier’s with Yonah right now, so he wanted me to pass on some info.” He began. He went through the gist of what happened at the shrine, to the possessed human. Though, he left out the info about he and Hazel being from another world. Around these two, he wanted to feel secure and revealed as little about him and his situation as possible.
“I see. That is concerning.” Popola commented.
“The shades are becoming more and more brazen, huh?” Devola commented as she lounged on the couch.
“Any idea why?” he asked them.
“Their leader is the Shadowlord. Whatever the reason, its because of him. I’m surprised he hasn’t told you yet.” Devola responded nonchalantly.
“I’m sorry, but was that all? We were kinda in the middle of something.” Popola explained. Qrow wondered what exactly they were in the middle of, but knew he couldn’t just pry like that.
“Yeah. Nier wanted to know if you came across any new leads.”
“Yes actually.” she responded happily. She opened a drawer and pulled out a piece of paper and an oddly shaped piece of stone. “This is a part of the key to the Shadowlord’s castle.” she said as she handed him the paper and key piece. The Stone Guardian, Sacrifice, The Law of Robotics, Memory Tree, and Loyal Cerberus.
“We’re not sure what Sacrifice and Loyal Cerberus are referring to, but its likely that The Stone Guardian piece was somehow connected to Gretel at the shrine.” Devola began.
“The Law of Robotics likely concerns the junk heap, and Memory Tree may have something to do with the Forest of Myth.” Popola finished.
“Alright then, Thanks ladies. I’ll be sure to give him this stuff.” Qrow waved goodbye as he walked out.
“Of course. Take care now.” Popola said.
“Yeah, and make sure Nier stays safe, will you?” Devola requested with undeniable concern. Of course, he agreed to.
As he closed the door, Qrow wondered just how they knew the shade at the shrine had a name. That was most concerning and suspect. Just how they came into the possessions of the items was a suspicious mystery too. Not only that, why just ask to keep Nier safe? What about his friends? He may not have been as capable as them, very few likely were, but there was no doubt they could be hurt too.
And then the Shadowlord. Qrow thought he must be somewhat like Salem, a manipulator of shadowy beasts. It was safer to assume he was intelligent, and leading those kids down some path of his creation. But why? And there was still the concern of who was helping him, if there was anyone.
By the time he made it back to the house, his mind was running through the possibilities. He was glad he could run them by the grimoire. While somewhat annoying, he was no doubt wise and smart. Though, he was snapped out of his thoughts by a terrifying smell.
“Brothers, what is ─”
“You’re back!” Yonah exclaimed, holding out a pot of… something. He wondered how she made it an unnatural looking bright blue. He doubted she had food dye.
“Just in time for your dinner, it seems.” Weiss snickered. Qrow gulped.
“Looks… interesting.” He commented with a smile. He reminded himself he was doing this to make a sickly little girl happy.
“It’s an awesome color isn’t it? I wonder if I could get Sebastian to make something as cool looking as that.” Emil said.
“Not unless─” Weiss said as he was cut off by a jab to his spine and a dirty look from Nier.
“I guess I’ll try some. I doubt it would taste bad to me.” Kainé said.
“Not that it ever tastes bad!” Nier affirmed intensely.
“I’ll try some too then! Can’t let Mister Qrow have it all for himself. I think it smells good anyways, so that means it’ll taste good.” Emil said as a bowl was set before him. Next was Kainé, and finally Qrow.
“Are you sure you don’t want any, Nier? I made a lot more than I meant to.” she told him.
“Oh, no, I’m fine. I already ate a lot.” he reasoned. He was thankful she didn’t press any further.
“Okay, on the count of three, all of you take a sip!” she adorably ordered. “One… Two… Three!”
Each of them took down some of the soup. Nier covered his eyes as he did so, and prayed they would all act fine. When he didn’t hear anyone gag, he uncovered them to see the trio gulping down the soup.
“This is good.” Kainé said in between gulps.
“My word, this is the quietest I’ve ever seen her! … See! The hussy didn’t even bark back at me! What kind of enchantments do you use young Yonah? I must know!” Weiss insisted as he moved about in grimoire fashion. It made her giggle.
“It’s my secret!” she joked.
“It’s sweet and salty, with a bit of bitterness to even it out.” Emil explained. “I really like it.”
“I love it.” Qrow said as he savored it. There was definitely some alcohol in this, weak, but alcohol nonetheless. Just how she got some in there, he did not know. He wasn't going to complain or question it though. “Pour some in here for me, will you kid?” he said as he offered her his empty flask. The soup, if it could be called that, wasn’t anything strong, but it was free, and the best kind of booze is free booze.
“Of course mister!” she replied gleefully. Internally, Qrow laughed that he would get a refill from such a situation.
“Hmm… I guess I could try some.” Nier said after contemplating grabbing a spoon.
“Hey! Back off, or else!” Kainé threatened as he went for her bowl. Cautiously, he backed away.
“You can have some of mine.” Emil offered.
As Nier took a spoonful out of Emil’s bowl, he inspected it nervously. It did not smell good to him, and was beginning to regret his decision. But, Yonah was watching, so there was no backing away. Quickly, he took the spoon into his mouth. It was terrible. Either they were good liars, or they somehow all actually enjoyed it. Quickly, he swallowed it.
“That was… Great!” he tried to say with enthusiasm.
“I’m glad you like it! Here, have a bowl!” She said as she slid him a bowl.
“Oh no, I’m still to full Yonah, I─”
“Mine now.” Kainé announced as she stole the bowl and began to wolf it down. Qrow chuckled.
“More please!” Emil asked as he held out his bowl.
“Fill me up again, yeah?” Qrow asked as he offered his half empty bowl. Happily, she refilled both of their bowls.
“I’m so glad you all liked it!” she said, smiling brighter than the sun.
It made Nier the happiest among the group. Despite everything, she wanted to help, so seeing her actually able to do that made him feel a warm feeling he hadn’t felt in some time. She proudly placed the pot back on the stove and resumed eating her meal from earlier.
“Hey, you’re not gonna eat any?” Kainé questioned, hoping she wasn’t taking any food away from the little girl.
“Oh, no. It tastes terrible to me. Devola said that it’s because I have weird taste buds.” She answered cordially as she reheated some food from earlier. Nier lamented the fact that he didn’t think of that excuse for himself. Well, he could perhaps use it in the future, blame it on puberty or something if he had to.
-
After a day of rest in the home, the group decided to leave for the Junk Heap. Yonah begged for them to stay just a little longer, but Nier was quick to say he needed to take care of things. As she deflated, he was even quicker to remind her that they all had such a fun time together, and that they would do it again soon enough.
“So, what’s the junk heap like?” Qrow asked aloud.
“It’s in the name. It’s a heap of junk, duh.” Kainé sassed.
“To be precise, it’s a place filled to the brim with junk from the old world, before it regressed to become what it is now.” Weiss explained.
“There are a lot of machines there. They’re a mix of technology and magic. The world sure had a lot of power and knowledge back in the day.” Emil reminisced sadly.
“Well, the machines still break against our weapons, so the old world couldn’t have been that powerful if you ask me.” Nier added.
“Power alone only does so much. Still, let’s just hope we don’t have to spend more time than we need to. But, based on what your friends said, I’m thinking the piece might be tied to a specific machine. And that, might take some time.” Qrow lamented.
He had already learned some nice info about magic from Weiss, but it wasn’t enough to feel satisfactory. He doubted a place filled with machines would reveal much to him, even if they also were part magic. However, he was glad he was able to help these kids. That was a goal he came to value more than he originally thought he would.
When they made it to the entrance to the heap, Nier made one stop at the brother’s weaponsmith to see about upgrading Beastcurse. He left Emil, Qrow, and Kainé outside longer than he anticipated. Weiss expected some sort of verbal spat when he joined them back outside. To his surprise, the two were formally sparring, with Emil as their referee.
Kainé was strong and quick with her swords, but Qrow still surpassed her. Serrated blades screeched against the sword Harbinger. Weiss could see that it was a well crafted weapon. Their back and forth was a sight to behold, though Weiss was sure Kainé could beat him if she used her magic. With a skillful parry, Kainé was sent skidding back.
“You’re a pretty good fighter, no surprise there, but you could still use some more experience.” he told her.
“Experience this!” she yelled as she rushed at him. Once they met, a volley of exchanges could be heard echoing.
“Get his ass Kainé!” Emil cheered. So much for a clinical ref.
“You got him now Kainé!” Nier assured.
“Show that hussy the might of incomparable wisdom!” Weiss cheered on Qrow. Someone had to.
In one swift motion he kicked her away. And almost as if by magic, the blade transformed into a scythe before their eyes. Kainé, however, did not notice, and sped back to him for another assault. That was her error. The scythe hooked the blades out of her hands by their chain, and a low kick felled her to the ground.
“Like I said earlier, power alone only does so much.” He told her as he held out a hand to help her up. Rolling her eyes, she took the help.
“Yeah, whatever.” she said.
“Your weapon, how did it do that?” Nier wondered as Qrow handed Kainé back her swords.
“Huh, wait, when the fuck did that happen?” Kainé exclaimed as she noticed Harbinger’s new form.
“That?” he said as it transformed back into a sword. “In my world, this kind of thing is commonplace. Its just a series of gears and stuff. Nothing special.” he replied dismissively. “... Well, no. It is kinda special.” His weapon was a rather unique one, even among the many huntsmen of Remnant.
“Impressive indeed, but our fun has been had. We have a new clue on the Law of Robotics. There is a machine that has partnered with a shade. If there is anything that is our target, that must be it.” Weiss announced.
“Don't be such a stick in the mud, book. The fun doesn’t even have to end, you know.” Qrow told him as they made their way into the heap.
“There is such a thing as a time and a place, you know.” Weiss annoyingly reminded him.
“I’d say this is a good time and a place.” Qrow replied. Then, an idea came to him. “For example, this is a good time and place for a bet.”
“... Really? I never would have guessed.” he replied sarcastically. “Please impart your wisdom unto me, Grimoire Weiss, as to how this is the proper setting for what is likely a petty bet?”
“Simple. I bet I can teach beach day over here better than how you can teach big brother here.”
“Pah! Do you truly think a ruffian such as yourself would serve as a better instructor than me? I agree to your little bet. I am sure some humility will do you good, once you lose.”
“Hey! Who said I gave a shit about this?” Kainé protested. “I am not gonna spend some time listening to some old timer telling me how to fight.”
“Here take this then.” Nier said as he held out a large sword with a bird motif. “You can wield two swords like Kainé.”
“Uhh, are you sure? I mean─”
“Yes, it’s fine.” he assured. “I still have the spear and dagger anyways on me anyways. It’s no big deal.”
“If you say so.” he said as he somewhat reluctantly took the sword. Now, he matched Kainé with two swords in hand. Granted, his were larger and heavier and lacked the chains her sword had. Looking at the golden sword, it was rather simple. But, it did have a strong and unique silhouette.
“Good. With that settled, let this one-sided battle begin!” Weiss announced confidently.
“I still haven't agreed to this crap.” Kainé reminded them.
“Don’t worry. I was a combat teacher for a bit, and I was amazing.” Qrow proudly assured.
“Wait, what about me?” Emil asked.
“You’ll be our judge.” Qrow answered him.
“It is an important and honorable task, one I am sure you will perform well in.” Weiss added.
“Yes!” the little mage excitedly nodded. “Don’t you worry, I’ll be a great judge!”
“Ugh…” Kainé sighed as she rolled her eyes. Now she had to do it, for Emil.
“Hey, It’ll be fun, Kainé. If you end up winning, that means you’ll have helped beat Weiss in a bet too.”
“Well, when you put it like that…” she chuckled, a grin spreading across her face.
“It was nice knowing you, Weiss.” Nier said dejectedly.
“And what is that supposed to mean? I will not accept a defeatist attitude!” Weiss yelled affirmatively.
“Let’s show those losers how its done!” Kainé yelled excitedly as a wave of machines approached.
“Now you’re talking my language.” Qrow replied as he swiftly felled some machines in a display of bravado. The other sword, it felt surprisingly good in his hands, almost empowering as if by mysterious magic.
As they progressed, Weiss barked “tips” for Nier to follow. Most of the time, he followed them well. Nier didn’t mind. It was different fighting without Weiss’s magic, as he focused his attention onto studying Nier’s movements and technique, but Nier considered it a good challenge. Plus, it was safer to practice on the machines rather than shades. They had become more and more dangerous, just as he did. The machines remained much the same as they were when he last visited, and the time before that, and the time before that.
As for Qrow, he found that Kainé was difficult to teach, at first. She was a difficult person in general. But, he knew that he was too. In a sense, that made her easier to deal with. Qrow quickly found that she didn’t take well to being told what to do, even if it meant improving her fighting. What she did take well to was being shown what to do without being told to do it. She was someone who learned by observing, which is what he realized after going down the first elevator.
The machines at the lower levels of the Junk Heap were more of a challenge, but still nothing compared to their talent and skill. Dual wielding the large swords, many automatons were easily felled. Qrow had half a mind to take up dual wielding back home. An impressed Kainé followed in his footsteps, turning machines into scrap much more efficiently than before, and without the aid of magic.
However, Qrow’s semblance was starting to act up, and it was eating at him. Nier had tripped and nearly met the electric end of an automaton. And sure, some machines were crushed by falling ceiling tiles, but one even fell near Weiss, almost flattening him.
It was at that point Qrow said they could spit up in their search. To cover more ground. At first, Weiss and Nier wondered if that was a wise move. But, Kainé convinced them, saying that if they ran into the shade and machine, they’d reduce it to smoke and scrap metal easily. Emil also supported her and Qrow, but opted to stay with Nier and Weiss.
Having split up, Qrow was sure less bad things would happen to the people around them. But, it seemed as if his semblance just decided to focus more on him and Kainé. At one point, he fell down one of the bottomless pits, and had to fly out. A few feathers were singed as a result.
Later, in a dead end room, Kainé got body slammed by a machine because she was too preoccupied mangling a P-33. Thankfully, the machine that body slammed her didn’t have its electricity on, for some reason. Regardless, Kainé quickly exacted her furious revenge. After that, Qrow suggested they take a break out in the empty hallway.
“Dammit, what the hell?!” Kainé yelled frustratedly as she kicked the wall. “Why the fuck is today so shitty!” Again, she kicks the wall. “What! The! Fucking! Hell!” Qrow leans against the wall, and she takes a deep breath and joins him for a moment of rest. “Well, at least its not boring today.” Qrow lets out a quick chuckle.
“Sorry.” he apologizes. “Not everyday I hear something good about me.” She could now sense his unease. She looked at him, and saw that he seemed hurt. Well, not hurt, per say. More sad, the kind of sadness that comes from the bitter acceptance of what one perceives as terrible. It was familiar to her.
“So, what’s up with you, then?”
“Would you believe me if I told you I was a curse?” he asked her. She gave a quick laugh in response.
“You’re asking another walking curse that, you know?”
“Oh. For what its worth, I don’t think that shade makes you a curse.” he earnestly told her. After all, you can’t really blame a person if a literal monster inhabits their body against their will. Her sad and bitter laugh surprised him.
“He’s hardly a curse. More of an annoying bitch than anything.”
“That’s not hard to believe.” he scoffed all too knowingly. From what he could infer about the shade’s personality, he was the very sadistic, and very annoying type, He’d come across a few similar people in his work for Oz. In Qrow’s eyes, the only thing that separated such people from Grimm was their intelligence and other desires aside from sadism.
It did not escape Qrow that this meant that some other thing weighed her mind, some other thing that made her mark herself as cursed. He knew better than to pry. If she wasn’t going to say, she didn’t have to. He could respect that. He knew he’d be a hypocrite otherwise. Still, he felt that she at least deserved to know what plagued him, what was plaguing her because of him.
That, and she was still just a kid, an teen hardened by cruel life, but a kid to him nonetheless. If his time teaching had taught him anything about kids, it was that they opened up to adults who took the time to understand and empathize with them. Mr. Branwen, man who had lived through a hell of a youth worse than most, found that he was rather good at getting the kids to open up about their feelings and concerns. It was one of the few things he could say he was proud of about himself.
“I told Emil already, but I guess you should know too. I… ”
“Uhgg. I’m gonna stop you there. These kinds of things are always sob stories.” she told him, rolling her eyes in usual teenage manner. “I fuckin hate sob stories.” she said under her breath. “It doesn’t matter what’s wrong with us. At the end of the day, we’re abominations either way, and we’ve still gotta live on regardless.”
“You’re pretty smart, you know?” Qrow chuckled. He’s sure she had a shitty life too. In an ideal life, kids don’t get that kind of thinking, so young at least. “You still wanna beat that book with me, yeah?” he asked, getting off the wall to stretch.
For a moment, Kainé hesitated. There was just something about him she felt that she could trust. She then noticed the concern, almost hurt yet resigned look on his face because she was taking so long to answer.
“Yeah, definitely.” she quickly confirmed. “But first, can you keep a secret?” she asked.
“Of course. What is it?”
She motioned for him to come closer. Even though it was just them two in the empty hallway, she still felt the need to whisper it. He lowered his head down, and let her whisper her secret to him. He was surprised at first. It was not what he was expecting in the slightest, but it was something he could very personally understand. In return, he shared a “secret” with her too.
He assured her, they were not monsters because of the body they were born with. She was a strong young woman. He told her that he felt much the same once, a long time ago, but assured her she too would overcome it.
Qrow knew he was not an epitome of self-love by any means. Far from it. But, his body was not a source of his self-hate. With an uncontrollable and unfortunate semblance, he was going to love that aspect of himself that he decided on, the part of himself that he could control. That part of himself he did not, would not, hate was a source of solace and comfort.
Qrow knew that Kainé wasn’t just going to love herself overnight, but he had given her some hope. That, she was thankful for. Just knowing that someone like Qrow was kinda like her, was comforting.
Don’t lose your hate so quickly now, sunshine. A weak, sad, pathetic voice told her.
-
While they all lost to Hazel and Gretel at the Junk Heap, they did manage to find the Law of Robotics key piece among some rubble.
But, Emil did later declare Qrow and Kainé the victors of the bet. Nier was ambivalent, but Weiss was absolutely livid, nearly unable to accept defeat. Qrow and Kainé had a lot of fun rubbing it in.
By the time they returned to the village to rest, he had come to accept his loss. Though, he stated that if their bet concerned magic, rather than weaponry, Qrow wouldn't stand a chance. He teased the book, saying he shouldn't be so sure of that.
Although reluctantly, the guards opened the gate on their command. Devola was playing the Song of the Ancients at the fountain this time around, eyes closed and focused on the song. So, it wasn't much of an issue to get past her unnoticed.
Once inside the home, Yonah squeaked with joy that they all returned so soon, and ran to hug her brother.
"It's nice to see you again too Yonah, but take it easy, ok? I don't want you to overexert yourself so much." Nier worried as he hugged her back.
"Ohh, you worry too much!" She scolded.
"He's just concerned, is all. Besides, you've got a good big brother. It's only natural for him to worry." Qrow explained.
"Well…" she sighed, "I guess you're right. I do have a pretty good big brother. I probably shouldn't complain too much. I promise to take it easy today then."
"Thank you Yonah. I heard that Popola managed to find some cards and taught you how to play with them. Maybe you could teach us, and we all could play?" He suggested. A smile beamed from her happy face at the idea.
"Okay! I'll go and find the cards." she announced as she went upstairs.
"I'm gonna go to the store real quick then!" He shouted.
"Alright! Don't take too long!" she shouted back.
"We'll help her look then." Kainé said.
"Sure. Want anything in particular?" He asked.
"No, I'm alright." Emil answered.
"A potato. … Two potatoes." Kainé said after a moment.
"Alright… Two potatoes." Nier said. He was unsure why she would want such a plain food.
"I'll go with you." Qrow offered. "I'm sure you need a break from the book."
"It is a pleasure and honor to be in my presence you know? Honestly, do you think the Grimoire Weiss is as common as a crass paperback?"
"Sure." Nier agreed as the two were walking out the door.
"Have fun, Weissy." Qrow goaded.
As the door closed, Weiss sighed. But, if he were being honest, he wouldn't mind just resting on a nice bookshelf for a moment. Nier was with Qrow, and the other kids were just upstairs where they could cause no trouble. He deserved a little rest, and there likely wouldn't be a better time for quite a while.
So, he found a spot on the nearly empty, but comfortable shelf in the corner near the staircase, and felt himself slowly drift into a calm and relaxed state.
-
"Thanks back there. For talking to Yonah and convincing her for me." Nier said graciously as they entered the shopping district. Truly, he was thankful.
"Eh." he shrugged. "Think nothin of it. Besides, you are a good brother. Trust me, I know what a bad sibling is, and you definitely aren't."
"It doesn't feel like that sometimes…"
"Yeah. It's easy to feel like you're never doing enough. I can promise you though, you're doing all you can, and it is a lot." Qrow assured him.
"Thanks. Again. That means a lot." Talking to Qrow, hearing him reassure him, it felt good, like it was something he needed, but didn't know he needed.
"You're welcome kid. Now come one, we've got some memories to make." He said, and proceeded to trip in front of the women at the fountain. He could hear them giggle. So much for trying to seem cool and stuff.
-
"Well, here are your potatoes." Nier said as he tossed them to her.
"Nice! You don't know how much I've been fucking craving these." She said, and took a bite out of one potato like it was an apple.
Qrow was not a man easily caught off guard. But that, that was shocking, and frankly, revolting.
"What?" she said to a staring Qrow as she took another bite.
"Why??? That's not how you eat them…"
"How the fuck are you supposed to eat 'em then?"
"Cook them?"
"And lose the crunch?"
"Ok my gods… give me those, I'll make fries."
"What the hell are fries?"
That broke Qrow's heart. After all that happened to him, it was not an easy thing to break. He could almost cry. He had to sit for a moment to process this. All the while, Kainé loudly munched on her potato.
"Okay." Qrow said once he recovered. "Just find me the other potato. I promise you will love fries. If you don't I will literally give you Harbinger."
He gave her a confused look. Right.
"My weapon." He clarified. Satisfied with the offer, she tossed him the other potato.
"You really named your weapon? You sleep curled up next to it or something?"
"That reminds me," interjected a refreshed Weiss, "the other blade you are currently in possession of is the Phoenix Sword."
"That's pretty believable." He said as he cut up the large potato. He was glad they bought cooking oil earlier.
"Would you like to hear the story I've collected on it?"
"Sure. Why not."
"Ugh." Kainé groaned. "I'm going upstairs so I'm not bored to fucking death." With that, she joined the others in a game of cards.
So far, Yonah had beaten both Emil and Kainé. Qrow imagines Nier was next to lose, and that Yonah was probably making up rules as they went. He'd figure he'd indulge her and lose later.
"Anyways, let me begin." Weiss said, and told the story.
This is an old story. A beautiful bird with brightly shining feathers lived silently and carefully in the depths of a forest.
One day, a child abandoned as a burden wandered into the depths of the forest. The bird took pity on the starved and sunken child, and pecked off one of its feathers to give to the child. The child brought it back and pleased his relatives, and he was able to live with his family again.
Hearing the story, people barged into the forest one after another, and told the beautiful bird of how poor, how unfortunate and how unrewarded they were. The beautiful bird took pity on them, and gave them one shining feather after another, and when it gave its last feather, the bird’s beautiful body was reduced to a sorry state. However, the ugly bird did not have any regrets.
The ugly bird that lost its feathers was freezing in the cold, and the child from before appeared in front of it. He told it that he was searching for a brightly shining and beautiful bird to repay his debts. The ugly bird was overjoyed, and told the child of its desire. "That was me. Please, would you not keep me warm in your chest?" But the child merely took one glance at the ugly bird and called it a liar, killing it with a huge sword and eating the burnt bird. Afterwards, he continued to search for the beautiful bird.
"... Well, that was something." Qrow commented.
"What were you expecting?" Weiss said accusingly.
"I don't know." Qrow responded defensively. "Ow!" He hissed as some oil splattered onto his hand. "Maybe how it was created, or something about its original owner?"
"Hmph, I imagine your weapon's story isn't to your tastes then."
"It doesn't have a story!" Qrow affirmed.
"Pah! All noteworthy weapons have a story, and yours is no exception!"
"Wait, wait. You're saying that Harbinger, my Harbinger, has a story?"
"Naturally. Do weapons in your world not have stories? Most odd." Weiss said before letting Qrow answer. "I suppose it is my duty to tell you your weapon's story then. So, I implore you to listen and listen well."
In a time not known, there lived an archer with jet black hair who killed, and killed, and killed the allies of the wretched light. The Goddess of Light ordered his death, as he was far too much of a threat for a mere mortal. She sent her greatest warrior to slay him. Equipped with divine magic and a holy armament, he obeyed his Goddess and killed the Hero of Innocent Darkness with his own fiery arrows.
Being an honorable and just soul, he ascended to an afterlife within the light. There, the cruel goddess controlled him as another one of her puppets. In her name, he ended the lives of many valiant souls who sought a world of freedom. Wherever he went, the goddess’s will followed in the form of a fiery arrow. To his dismay, he soon even surpassed the one who killed him, and became her new greatest warrior.
So, when a new living, breathing soul threatened her as he once did, it was this warrior’s duty to dispatch the threat. The threat was a young woman, much younger than he was when he took up arms against the goddess. He announced his arrival with the shining shot of a holy arrow into the air.
The woman… she seemed familiar to him. But, it was no time for distant memories. He had to carry out the will of the Goddess of Light, even if he did not want to. While a magic user, she was unique in how she wielded it. Rather than fight at a range, she fought up close. She lasted much longer than he had in his last fight, but even she too was felled. However, he too succumbed to her efforts. He lay there, burning by fiery arrows once more. In his final moments, he wondered, and feared, what awaited him in the death after death.
“Well, there’s your story. More satisfactory than the Phoenix Sword, hmm?”
“No.” Qrow deadpanned. “In fact, I’m gonna forget it. Well, I’ll forget it soon.” With that, he popped open the flask and downed it. He was hoping to ration it, but in all honesty, he’d rather not have to live with the fact that even his weapon was a sad mess. He was sure the alcoholic “soup” wasn’t going to be strong enough to actually help him forget, but, it was worth a shot.
“Underappreciated as usual.” Weiss sighed to himself.
“You’ll get used to it soon enough.” Qrow joked. “Come one, we’ve got kids to feed.”
Qrow carefully ascended the stairs, as to be sure he wouldn’t drop them. A cautious Kainé scrutinized a fry before taking a bite out of one. Her face lit up and she quickly shoved it into her mouth. The others quickly joined in on the indulgence, enjoying the simple treat as much as their voracious friend.
Nier threw money at him to get some more potatoes, and Yonah begged him to teach her how to make them. He was happy to oblige. It made him happy to see them all so energetic and pleased. He also made the book go with him to the shopping district so they could discuss some important matters.
All in all, Qrow was satisfied in how things were turning out. Sure. things could be better, but they definitely could have been a lot worse. So, this is a win in his book. It seemed odd that he felt so happy in this world, but he knew that he would have to leave this world soon. If anything, he preferred that. That way, he had less of a chance to ruin his time here, or ruin anything else. But, for now, he would enjoy this mission.
-
Qrow woke up feeling groggy, and was hit with a terrible headache. His first thought was that he had gotten stupid drunk before returning to Oz and was paying the price. But, as his senses came back to him, he noticed that he wasn’t at Beacon. He wasn’t sure where he was. He quickly got up and searched for his weapon. It was at the side of the bed he was on, and he quickly shifted it into its scythe form.
Cautiously, he went for the door. He found it odd that his capturers let him hold onto his weapon, but he wasn’t going to complain. Just as he was about to touch the handle to make sure it wasn’t rigged or anything, the door shot open.
“Hello there.” A woman greeted as she blocked the scythe with a suitcase. “Just on time. I was hoping to have a few words with you, if you don’t mind?”
Qrow really wasn’t going to take his chances entertaining this woman, so he figured that the best course of action was flying past her as a bird, which he did. Though, he didn’t get far. He flew straight into another suitcase and fell limp to the ground.
“Thank you Accord.”
“You’re welcome Accord.” cordially replied Accord. She walked over to pick up the knocked out bird, and took measurements and notes as she walked to her destination.
When Qrow awoke, a different woman was in front of him. She was eating some fries, sitting on her comfortable looking bed. She had off white hair, and silver eyes. Qrow shifted back into human form.
“Yonah?”
“Oh Qrow! It is you!” she shouted as she jumped up and pulled him in for a hug. “I almost didn’t believe Accord when she said you’d be here. I’m so glad you’re alright. I’m glad you remembered me too.”
“I’m glad you’re alright too. Couldn’t forget someone like you if I tried. But, uh, mind filling me in on all this?” he requested as she released him from the embrace.
“Hmm? Oh, yeah! I guess Accord didn’t have time to huh? Come and walk with me, and I’ll give you the basics.” she said as she picked up her sword, one with a phoenix motif, and then her fries.
“Still hooked onto those fries, huh?” he asked. He was glad to see a familiar face. It put him at ease. That, and he did not feel or sense any danger in this place. It felt safe. That was a good sign.
“Mmhm.” she said with a mouth full of fries before swallowing them. “I always remembered how to cook them how you taught me. In fact, because of you, this place has fries now.”
Qrow lightly laughed. It was an odd honor to have, but an honor nonetheless.
“So, what exactly is this place?” he asked, still smiling.
“This, is the base of the organization known as The Dragon Guard. Though, dragons are practically extinct in most timelines now. But, we do have Mikey. He’s funny. But anyways, our goal is to defeat god. His goal is to destroy humanity and our creation.”
“And naturally, you guys aren’t gonna let that slide, right?” Qrow stated. Yonah eagerly nodded.
“Yup! I was recruited a couple years ago. Though technically, its been millenia since then.” she said as if it were no big deal. Qrow looked at her, eyes wide with surprise. “It’s actually not that complicated if you want me to explain it.”
“I’m good. My head hurts enough as is.” he complained as he rubbed it.
“Yeah… Accord said that might happen.” Qrow looked at her curiously, almost concerned.
“Did you call for me?” they heard a voice say from behind. He jumped up with a yelp in shock.
“On time, as always. How are you Accord? Come across anything that needs some of my special attention?” Yonah casually asked.
“I’m good, as always.” Accord smiled. “Though, there have been reports of another dangerous interloper. This one wields elemental magic and a bunch of swords. But, I doubt you’ll need to take care of her. She’s in one of the timelines where the Seeds of Destruction activate the goddess.” Qrow wondered what the hell any of that meant.
“Another moment of rest for me then, I guess.” she sighed. “Hey, do we have time to spar real quick?” she asked Accord, who thought for a quick moment.
“Sure. I’ll be sure to set up an arena for you.”
“Thank you Accord. Alright, follow me!” she said as she excitedly led Qrow to what he assumed would be the training area.
They passed many different places on their way. There was a large mess hall, a weapons room Qrow would have to see if he could look at later, a magical test center, and he even saw Mikey. Apparently, the white dragon loved his fries, which he confirmed Yonah made perfectly just as he did. When they finally reached the training room, he was out of breath.
“Here,” she said as she pulled out a seat, “rest for a moment. Do you think you could watch my swordsmanship and critique it? Kainé said you were an amazing teacher.” Her face betrayed her cheerful voice, as a hint of sadness could be seen.
“That, I am. So show me what you’ve got.”
After watching her go toe to toe with an android in black, he could say he was very impressed. Her attacks were quick and precise. Additionally, some damage she took seemed to be shrugged off by her own attacks, as indicated by the health bars on display. As the battle ended with Yonah as the victor, he proudly made her way over to Qrow.
“So, what do you think?” she huffed excitedly.
“I’d say you’re even better than me.” he answered honestly. Time had been kind to her. He hoped it would stay that way. She deserved it.
“Really, you think so?” she asked. Qrow nodded his head to reaffirm. She squealed in joy. “I’m so glad you think so! It means so much to me!” she yanked him in for another hug. It was rough, but he didn’t mind too much.
Just then, they heard the door open, Accord walking in.
“Oh, you’re here early, er, on time, actually. I guess it just feels early.” Yonah said. Sadly.
“Your time’s almost up. The magic that brought you here is strong. We were lucky enough to even be able to intercept it.” Accord neutrally explained. “You know, you’re a singularity. Of sorts.”
“You’re someone who causes timelines to branch and split off. You even made a timeline that survived.” Yonah said happily.
“Yeah, an incredible feat. If I were you though, I wouldn’t feel bad about the ones that didn’t survive. Those ones were gonna fail regardless. But man, you did give me a lot of work, not that I mind though. It provided some nice data. That brings me to this: I’ve temporarily sealed off a majority of your memories from during your time away from your world. You have a choice. You can choose to remember or not. It will be a lot to take in, and you’ll have a nasty headache for a bit. So. what’s your choice, avian interloper?”
“I…” he wasn’t so sure. He had a bad feeling about this. But, something compelled him to choose to remember. It felt like he had a duty to remember. It felt somebody was convincing him it was the right choice. “I want to remember.”
“As you will.” Accord answered, pulling out her large phone. “Alright. Initiate code. MEM-3313.”
She was right when she said the headache would be nasty. But, the memories were worse. So many things made sense, and it was all saddening and terrifying. But, mixed in there, were some good memories, ones people wouldn’t trade for the world. There was little Yonah, so much like Ruby to him. Her, Nier, Kainé, Emil, Halua, Weiss, and Rubrum, were a part of many wonderful memories, memories of a world where he felt normal, even if just for a moment. And there they were, in a few terrible memories too, reminding him of his fears and hatred.
“We have another choice for you. Do you wish to keep your memories?” Accorded asked. “Regardless, I already have the important ones recorded, so don’t let us influence your choice.”
Those memories worth more than the world, weren’t worth more than all the suffering and sadness and betrayal he had witnessed so many times. He could barely handle it.
“Take them… take them all…”
“Are you sure?” Yonah asked this time.
“Kid… I’m sorry. I’m not that strong of a person.”
“You are a strong person, Mister Qrow, just not that kind of strong, and that’s alright.” she sat down to take a seat next to him. “The world is a pretty terrible place. And we can all only take so much. I don’t blame you, okay? Accord, transfer them to me.” Qrow looked at her in shock.
“You’re a good man Qrow. Don’t forget that. I know that someday, you’ll be stronger for the people who need you. I believe in you. You have someone who believes in you. Don’t forget that, okay? You have someone who believes in you.”
Qrow wasn’t sure what to say as she tearfully pulled him in for one last hug. He just noticed that he was crying too. He began to feel sleepy.
“Thank you for so many good memories, Qrow. You helped make those days with my brother and friends possible. …Thank you, and goodbye…”
“Goodbye. . .”
You have someone who believes in you.

Fate’s Arrow: Chapter One
Today’s entry I actually started before Valentine’s Day, and it was supposed to be for the holiday. But I fell behind on my goal line - then FG week was announced with the exact theme I was using for the entry I decided I would repurpose it for the shipweek instead.
And I still didn’t finish this one.
So I’m cheating a little bit. Unfortunately, for as great as I have done for the week (and I won’t lie, I’m very impressed with myself) a month to do seven stories is VERY demanding for me. I’m just not fast enough nor do I have enough free time to make it happen without my quality dipping. And I want y’all to read a product I’m proud of.
SO, all this to say... that this is the first chapter of this tale. I will readdress it at a future time, but I hope you enjoy this one!
Day 4: Soulmates
Rating: K+
Pairing: Qrow/Clover
Word Count: 1.4k
Ao3 Link: Chapter One
Summary: It was said to be the work of Fate: A date etched one’s wrist, in the color of another's eyes, that foretold a destined meeting with one's soulmate.
Qrow took one look at his and decided the person with teal eyes he was meant to encounter on February 14th was more trouble than they were worth. [Modern Soulmate AU]
Qrow was pretty sure when he was born, Fate took one look at him, laughed hysterically, and then, like the conniving mistress She was, etched in the color of his other half’s irises what had to be the most ironic date in the world to find his soulmate:
February, 14th
That’s all he got. A day and an eye color. Nothing more, nothing less. Not even the year – for all he knew, he’d met his soulmate before he could even talk.
He thumbed at his wristband, where below the teal green ink was hidden. Then scoffed at himself when he realized what he was doing.
Soulmates, pah! What good was a soulmate, anyways? He’d seen what it had done to his best friend, how Tai had practically danced on Cloud 9 for five years only to lose Summer and trade in all that joy for Stage 5 depression instead. There was nothing romantic or fulfilling about that. It was just sad. And to think the same could happen to him?
Qrow was pretty sure he had enough problems to fill out the Dignostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders himself, thank you very much.
He reached across the bathroom sink, plucking out his contact lenses from their case and placing them in either eye. He blinked rapidly a few times to get used to the feeling, looking into the now blue orbs staring back at him.
He had no intention of being a pawn of Fate whom was already twittering away over destining them to meet on the so called “Day of Love”.
He set the case aside, gave himself one more appraising look, before heading out the door.
Besides, with his luck, even if he did find them, his soulmate wouldn’t even like him.
~
Tai was intent on giving him hell for it – just like every year before.
“I just don’t understand why you insist on making yourself unhappy.” He was saying as he slowed the car down for a stop light.
Qrow looked up from the emails he was riffling through (mostly junk about it being the ‘Last day to buy for his one and only!’), to frown towards the blond. “Hey, who says I’m unhappy?”
Tai rolled his own naturally blue eyes at him. “Oh, I don’t know, why don’t we ask Jack Daniels?”
He rolled his eyes right back. “Just because I knock back a few every now and again-”
“Every now and again? Qrow, for awhile, it was almost every night!”
“Yeah, and I got better. What more do you want from me?” He huffed. As the light turned green and they started moving again, he added, “What does this have to do with anything, anyways?”
“Because I don’t want to see you like that again man! It was, scary.” Tai brow had furrowed with stress, a crinkling at the edges of his eyes that made it look like he might cry.
Gods, Qrow hated it that expression. It made his gut twist in unpleasant ways.
So, he looked out the window instead. “And what, finding my soulmate will be the cure to my alcoholism?”
“No, but it would be something positive for you. Which you do need more of in your life.” He replied, taking a right onto Beacon Boulevard.
Leafless trees framed either side of the street. Last night’s snowfall was still heaped heavily into the knots of trunks and today’s sun caused the icicles clinging to the branches to shine brightly. They only had a few houses to go before they pulled up to the curb of their destination – a moderately sized two-story house that sheltered a rather unusual collective within its walls. Oz’s Home Away From Home was a group home for recently orphaned kids as well as teenagers who fell out of unfavorable foster home situations. The facility was meant to provide a safe space for kids to recover from or deal with trauma and grief rather than immediately allow the government social workers to chuck them into the system and forget about their pain.
Having been fosters themselves during a time when the organization was an even more unfavorable mess, Tai and Qrow had both been volunteering for nearly a decade now at Oz’s. They came by every other Saturday, working with the kids there to rehabilitate or counsel them. It was difficult, trying to instill hope into the children when Qrow knew they felt at their lowest. He’d been there right along with them once, and hoped that the man they could see now acted as an example that things did get better. That there was still a future out there for them.
Tai pulled the break and cut the engine, but that did nothing for his motormouth. “Look, all I’m saying is, are you really going to be satisfied letting the opportunity to meet your soulmate pass you by?”
He shrugged as he unbuckled his seatbelt.  “There’s plenty of people who don’t have a date on their wrist and they seem to make it through life just fine. I don’t see why I’d be any different.” He threw open the door, adding as he got out. “Just ‘cause I have one doesn’t mean I need them.”
“It’s not-”
He slammed the door closed before he had to hear anymore.
He enjoyed the blissful silence for all of two seconds, when Tai got out from the other side, “You bast-”
This time he was saved by the front door flying open. “Oscar-!” He heard Oz yelling from inside.
But it did nothing to pause the freckled-faced boy from running down the steps of the stoop, calling brightly, “Mr. Qroooow!”
Qrow grinned, swooping up the little five-year-old in his arms and lifting him high just like he liked. “Hey you lil’ rascal.”
He giggled holding his arms out. “I’m the crow now.”
“That you are.” He laughed. As he peered past the boy, he could see Ozpin making his way over.
It was easy to tell from his unusually rumpled appearance that it had probably been a hard morning for the caretaker. “Sorry, he got away from me.”
“No need to be sorry, I can’t think of a more wonderful greeting.” Tai said as he made his way around the car. He held out his hands, letting Qrow deposit Oscar into them.
“Mr. Long!” The boy immediately started fiddling with the fringed ends of Tai’s yellow scarf. “Did you bring gifts?”
The blond made a show of thinking really hard. “Hmmmm, I can’t recall. Maybe we need to check the trunk and see?”
“Need help carrying anything?”
The new voice was unexpected and had Qrow looking towards the door, eyebrows rising at the man coming down the steps. He remembered Ozpin mentioning a new volunteer would be joining them today – a friend of a friend, was what he had said. But he hadn’t mentioned more than that. Like, perhaps, the slightly more interesting fact that he was from the military.
From head to toe, the new fellow was decked out in the white uniform of a navy officer, even the circular, wire-frame sunglasses. The only thing he didn’t have was the low-brimmed cap. Probably didn’t want to contain that slightly ridiculous updo he had, which reminded Qrow of a crest of feathers certain birds had. Something glinted on his chest, catching his eye, and he tried to make out what it was.
“Any help would be appreciated!” Tai called from where he was trying to juggle Oscar and get the trunk open. The new guy hurried over to relinquish him of the boy which turned out to be a bit more difficult when he refused to let go of Tai’s scarf.
Oz joined in the effort, helping to untangle them, and once he had a good hold of Oscar, the soldier stepped back to stand beside Qrow instead.
It gave him a chance to get a better look at the medallion on the collar of his shirt. He snorted as he realized it was a brooch in the shape of a four-leaf clover. “Hey shamrock, I think you decorated for the wrong holiday.”
“Huh? Oh, you mean this?” He flicked one edge as he adjusted his grip on Oscar. “Nah this is just an old keepsake of mine.”
“Mr. Bee? Can I wear your glasses again?” The little boy asked, wide-eyed and hopeful.
“Sure kid.” He lowered his head so he could reach up and take them.
Qrow snorted again. “Bee?”
“Ebi, actually. Clover Ebi.” The other man corrected, looking up at him with a grin that was almost blinding.
But only almost – and almost just wasn’t enough.
As he stared into the other’s teal green eyes, Qrow swore the sudden rushing in his ears was the sound of Fate pouring Herself a glass of well-deserved wine.
Oh fuck.

Weird things Me and Dad said while talking about RWBY:
Dad: Here's my theory.
Me: Take two.
Dad: Ruby. Silver eyes. Summer realizes this and goes to Ozpin. Ozpin tells Summer about Jinn.
Me: So Summer and Raven join forces?
Dad: Not unlikely. Raven would want something in return tho.
Me: Raven is like "Ya ok but what do I get out of this" and Summer goes "You'll get answers." And Raven says "Sounds sus but ok."
Dad: Ya. So they go to Mistral, open the vault, ask Jinn about why Silver eyes are being hunted, and get their answer.
Me: Raven just nopes out of there like "I ain't ever going back" while Summer goes "Welp. Time to get myself killed."
Dad: Ya, probably. Raven leaves and Summer tries to Kamahamaha Salem with her silver eyes but dies trying.
Dad: Winter is going to kill Ironwood. Sword right through the throat.
Dad: Teah brought something up earlier-
Me: Was it the taco thing?
Mom: Taco thing?
Dad: It was not the taco thing.
Me: Oscar uses the staff and says "Spooky Spooky give us back the husband" to bring back Ozma. "Please help we have your wife and we don't know what to do with her we are sorry."
Dad: If anyone hurts a hair on Penny's head I will kill everyone and them myself.
Dad: Kill off Qrow. And Robynn. Just for the shock value.
Me: Do it infront of the kids, cause they see him as a father figure.
Dad: Yes. Do it at the end. Right after Salem is purged of her Grimm self by the silver eyes-
Me: -if the group is smart enough to figure that out-
Dad: -and have it happen unexpectedly.
Me: Do it right at the end of the volume. Have everyone's shocked faces and then cut off the season. Have Raven and Tai and Zwei portal in to and watch Qrow die. The Happy Huntresses are there for Robynn.
Mom: No! Dont kill off Qrow.
Me: Or wait for Qrow to die. Do it after Vacuo when he's adopted CFVY and the Beacon students there.
Dad: No, because, as much as I love Qrow, he's had his arc now its death time. Just have the fandom cannibalize itself.
Dad: Ozpin is hiding much more then we know. He knows too much.
Me: Is that part of the reason why he lied about the no more lies amd halftruths things? Because he knew Yang and everyone else was keeping lies and telling half truths?
Dad: Yes!
Me: Listen, Robynn has fingerless gloves. Who else has fingerless gloves? Coco and Yang. What do Yang and Coco have in common? Theyre both lesbians. Therefore, Robynn is Lesbian.
Mom: I still headcanon they are both bi.
Me: Robynn litteraly runs an army of women, Mom.
Dad: Alright, I'm not gonna interfere with your shipper logic.
Dad: I headcanon Hot Chocolate was invented during the Great War and the King of Vale tried it and was all like "This is good. I'm gonna drink it for the rest of my life." And when he was put into Ozpin Ozpin was "I have the sudden urge for Hot Chocolate."
Me: Poor Oscar.
Me: I still like your theory that Oscar has a mimicry semblance.
Dad: If they don't unlock Oscar's semblance as the ability to act as someone else and no one says "Give this man an award" I will riot.
Dad: Oz is going to have his ideal happy ending, right? What does he want most in the world? Death.
Me: Ooh, fun.
Me: I never understood why heroes do the motivational speech. Like, if someone went up to me and said "Hey wanna fight an evil organization and stop the end of the world for the good of humanity" I would be like "No thanks." But if someone came up to me and said "Wanna go fight a guy?" I would immediatly say yes.
Dad: See, that's the same thing. You just worded it differently. You got to appeal to your audience. In any case, Ruby isnt going to be able to unite humanity against Salem. Salem, however, could do something so bad that humanity turns agaisnt her without leadership. Because when someone gives a motivational speech there is always that one person that goes "BuT wHaT iF-" or when the fight begins someone says "wElL aCtUaLlY-" like no shut up.
Dad: Salem is going to be taken care of this season, and Cinder will go in Volume 9. The bad guy if Volume 10, in Vale, with be the Brothers.
Me: Figures.
Me: The staff of creation just summons a bunch of ghosts in suits discussing how to take down Salem.
Dad: a staff meeting, ha!
Me: Like Summer and Pyrrha are there in suits-
Dad: And all of the Oz incarnations. Just like "you got them in your head to?" "Yep." "Same."
Me: Do you think after they free Salem of her Grimm self she'll join the gang?
Dad: No-
Me: That's sad.
Me: *trying to explain the Oz timeline and where the Infinite Man fits in*
Dad: *nodding in obvious confusion*
Dad: Did Ozma 2.0 and Salem have a son?
Me: Diggs and Salem had four daughters. One for each season. Spring, Winter, Summer, Fall. Color coordinated and everything.
Dad: They arent going to have a happily ever after. What's going to happen is the brothers are going to view humanity as a disaster. With 3 out of 4 of the nations being in ruin, they won't see humanity as being united even if everyone worked together to defeat the final boss. So they are going to let Oz and Salem die and then send RWBY, JNPR, CFVY, ect. back to before Salem went batshit crazy-
Me: The first time or Atlas?
Dad: The first time. So they are going to stop Salem from jumping into craziness. Get it, because she jumped into the pools-
Me: I get it.
Dad: It wont be a HAPPY happy ending but there is no saving Remnant. It was a punishment anyways and Salem already won.
Me: Why cant they just put Atlas on top of the Pools of Grimm?
Dad: Because then Salem will have a giant flying castle.
Me: She already has a castle. And she has a flying whale Grimm. Just put the castle on top of the whale and BOOM! Flying castle.
Dad: I still think Jaune's sword is the Sword of Destruction. Nothing in this show happens without purpose.
Me: No, everything has a purpose, just some things get forgotten and/or ignored.
Me: The group is going to be those parents that when their kid says they don't want to do homework go "When I was your age-"
Dad: Like "When I was your age I stopped an evil monster!"
Me: "I killed my Collage Professor's evil ex wife!" Nora is going to be telling her and Ren's kids the battle of Atlas. "We were alone facimg against an army of Grimm!"
Dad: Its going to play out as Nora telling the group the Beowulf story with Ren correcting her. "We were hopelessly outnumbered." "We weren't." "Surrounded by an army of Beowulfs." "There were two."
Me: "The middle of the night!" "It was the afternoon."
Dad: Ren just resigns himself to spending his life correcting Nora's story telling.
Me: She's telling her kids stories-
Dad: And Ren is just in the kitchen making tea.
Me: Nora goes "Our teacher's wife invaded mantle with thousands of Grimm! The Jellyfish were invading Mantle!" "They were floating in the sky." "We were farther apart then ever-"
Dad: "We were a block away."
Me: "The General.... Was Ironwooding." The rest of the group comes over with their kids. Nora is screaming about the story and Ruby and Yang join in. Ren and Weiss correcting them.
Dad: Blake is in the corner drinking tea.
Me: She looks up and goes "This is great tea." Meanwhile Ren is still busy correcting Nora.
Dad: "But they didnt know we had a secret weapon... A 20 foot laser eyed robot!" "She was 4' 8""
Me: Oscar comes over one day and says "Remember that one time I was shot off Atlas by James and fell and broke my aura falling down to Mantle." And everyone is like no??? Cause with the way things are going, he's not going to tell them.
Dad: Qrow is just upstairs banging his cane on the ground like "Keep it down I'm trying to sleep!"
Me: I love how we assume Qrow lives with them.
Dad: Of course he does. Where else would he stay?
Me: Tai.
Dad: Qrow is that old nuisance who lives with them.
Me: He's an old bird half the time just chilling on everyone's shoulders. How would the rest of the group be paired up? The only canon ship we got is Renora.
Dad: What Salem did with bringing back Ozma was essentially the 'Go to ask Dad. Dad gave you an answer you did not like. Go to Mom. Mom says yes. Parents start fighting and punish the kid."
Me: If Salem had gone to the younger brother, or in this case, mom, she wouldve gotten what she wanted and there would be a war on the Brother's hands cause the older couldn't punish Salem and could only argue against the younger.

Since you're just about to start vol 7, is there any theories you have going forward? Is there something you really want to see happend? Have you been spoiled for anything?
Putting this under a “Read More” because this is just one thing after another…
Theories? In hindsight after writing all of this, most of it is not the main cast because I guess at the moment, they’re rather well-adjusted and/or recovering from their issues rather well lol, so I can’t make big enough guesses on them right now.
Emerald and maybe Mercury GTFO there, I think being stuck in Salem’s castle with Hazel until whatever goes down in Atlas I guess will
Emerald becomes a Maiden, my guesses are:
A “redeemed” Cinder thinks of Emerald in her last moments, but it’s kept vague if she was thinking of her because she actually cared about her or because of something completely unrelated to that (ex. “Emerald better have-*gets killed midsentence*”).
Otherwise, Cinder finds out Emerald is now a Maiden and turns against her. Now Emerald has to deal with her mother figure, the woman who saved her life, wanting her dead.
Either way, I think this could lead to her redemption.
Mercury is pretty hard to read, especially after what he said in V6 about why he acts the way he does and how he feels about his relationship with Cinder and Emerald. Tyrian summed him up as just putting up a tough exterior because he doesn’t know anything else, so if something like Emerald going rogue happens, then it’ll be interesting to see how long he’ll keep those barriers up against Emerald.
Cinder “redemption” arc. I don’t know how, but it would constitute showing her backstory (because that infatuation for power and not wanting to be powerless has to come from something, and she’s based on Cinderella, so.). V6 already had Salem basically kicking her out of the house for disobeying her (albeit she’s apparently still keeping an eye on her…), so Cinder left to her own devices could end up doing a lot more loose cannon-y things outside of trying to get revenge on Ruby and this eventually leads into her becoming an anti-villain and something of an anti-hero?
Pyrrha’s and maybe Amber’s souls are actually connected to Cinder, kind of like with Ozpin and Oscar, because 1) Maiden mechanics? and 2) It seems strange to me that back in V3 when they hooked up Pyrrha to Amber in that aura transfer machine, they made a big deal out of how Pyrrha “might not be the same” if the transfer works but then she died anyways so that part seemingly didn’t matter outside of brief angst? At the moment, I don’t know where this would go other than Pyrrha and Amber kind of haunting Cinder like ghosts, maybe this could lead to her “redemption”?
After what happened with Vernal, I don’t know what to make of Winter Schnee and Summer Rose as possible Maidens, but it seems relevant? We’ll just have to wait and see.
Likewise, I don’t really know where Hazel’s arc may go, either they’ll keep him as someone who refuses to move forward and ends up dying a bitter, meaningless life, or he’ll finally realize that and maybe help the heroes against Salem and/or Em & Merc leave Salem (I think him trying to take the blame for Cinder’s failure in V6 was foreshadowing), probably at the cost of his life because I can’t imagine him turning against Salem and managing to walk away alive.
Weiss tearing Jacques a new one, because we got Yang doing that to Raven in V5 and Blake (and Yang) doing it to Adam in V6 too, so I think we’ll continue to see cycles of abuse, hate, spite, and so on get broken from this point on.
And also take Whitley and GTFO there too, it’d be neat to see him unlearn his behavior from being under Jacques this whole time and I guess “redeem” himself… I have no idea who should take him in but he could stay with Maria if she and the group are parting ways in Atlas, it probably wouldn’t be safe for him to tag along with RRAYNBBOW (or however they’re called now lol). I pretty much envision this as what Eh**z said about Azulademption if it had happened in ATLA (”I’m happy.” “Yes, we know you are, Whitley.”).
Tai fighting, because they’ve established him as being retired while Raven and Qrow are still in action, so I think we might see him fight at some point as things come to a head.
Because RWBY is a good show that knows how to properly “subvert expectations”, it is to be expected that a lot of questions and mysteries will get answered (ex. Almost everything about Summer, Raven/The Spring Maiden subplot to come back, probably if a Maiden killing another Maiden actually boosts their power or not, whatever they have to do to teach Salem her lesson, etc.), and there are a lot of endgames they’re likely building up to (ex. Salem is defeated, Oz and Salem reunite and reconcile in the afterlife, Oscar is the last Oz reincarnation because Oz’s quest finally gets a happy ending, the Gods leave Remnant alone, maybe the Grimm disappear from Remnant, etc.).
Things I want to see happen (outside of ships because I think y’all know already lol):
I think this is a victim of the show trying to find its footing early on, which does happen, but I think it would be/have been neat if we got to see Ruby’s friends from Signal at some point (I’m guessing this might be prime self-insert OC material) or at least get a glimpse of the “elementary”/”primary” Huntsmen academies, if only because I like worldbuilding/lore and Chekhov’s guns/foreshadowing :P. Though I doubt this will happen since the show is moving in a really different direction from the school setting it had back in V1-V3, which is fine.
Jacques joining Adam in clown hell
STRQ flashbacks, and maybe a TRQ reunion? Again, I can see this as something happening as things come to a head, especially since this would require Raven to kind of turncoat back to the good guys.
EDIT: I would also like to see Goodwitch come back, but I guess that might be a while since we’re focusing on Atlas at the moment and then presumably Vacuo?
Watts shaving his dumb moostash
More anime voice actors, because OH WOW IT’S AMAZING HOW THE ACTING INDUSTRY WORKS, HUH VI?
I think that’s all I can think of for now… Anything else I usually wonder about is something I bring up in my liveblogs? I think??
Have I been spoiled for anything? Yeah, I guess, but it was because of people rb’ing RWBY on my dash/TL/whatever before I started watching the show, so I didn’t have context and I didn’t think much of any of it beyond that they looked neat. That, plus me having the memory of a goldfish about all of that probably helped… For example, ask me about Homestuck, The Adventure Zone, Critical Role, The Arcana, etc. because I see those on my dash a lot, but I have no idea what they’re about other than maybe some general info and a couple of character names.
That being said, I knew/know about some characters that hadn’t/haven’t shown up yet because that’s pretty hard to avoid (at the beginning, I only really knew RWBYJNPR, Sun, Penny, and also Ozpin, Qrow, and Summer but pretty much in name only; back when V7 started, I did notice a lot of popularity with certain characters from that volume), and some things I did know like someone being able to turn into a bird (when the Faunus lore got introduced, I thought this was going to be a Faunus power lol*), Blake was or was not a cat-person, Summer being gone, Bumbleby being the ship, and maybe more that I can’t remember at the moment.
* …“What I expected vs. What I got: RWBY Edition” is probably something that warrants its own post. Hmm…
It’s 3 AM and this is a huge garbled mess, but as you might guess, I’m really invested in RWBY right now and it’s fun wondering where they’ll take the story next. This is quality.

I am thinking about an RWBY au. An AU where Raven left but decided to be part of her daughter life after Summer's death. In this au Tai destroyed all the photos were Raven was, leaving only photos where only she was wearing her mask. In this AU Yang never found out that Raven is her mother. Only thinking of her like "that teammate of the mask" "mom's partner" "uncle Qrow's sister. Maybe she would find that Summer wasn't her mother much later.
Raven had been visiting before as a bird, sometimes she got to talk with Summer who was her partner/BFF but also who she got a crush on. Summer was really understanding of her returning to her tribe since she possibly had post partum depression. She however, tried to convince her to officially visiting Yang and be part of her live. Raven had doubts since the team made clear that they didn't approved of the tribe ways which were part of her identity.
After Summer died, one day she decided to visit Summer grave only to realize that little Yang went to visit Summer grave too. Since they never got attacked before she thought it was safe. But didn't count on the negative feelings. She and Ruby got attacted but were saved by Raven. She only presents herself as Summer partner. After leading her to Summer grave and then to home she made her promise to not leave alone again.
"the weak die the strong lives, you haven't been taught how to survive yet"
"could you teach me"
"why should I do that"
" mom always said you're the strongest, who better to teach me to stop being weak"
"she talked about me?"
"Yes, you're her second in command, the person she trusted more, your semblance didn't help you win only you skill, you were the warrior more complete, you were the most determined."
"I am not a good influence kid. Those two would not be happy if I teach you my ways"
"They don't need to know"
"I have other responsibility that I'm in charge of."
"We can have a schedule"
"I am really strict"
"I can take it" "
"you might be to young... But I guess if you want to survive the younger the better"
"does that mean.. "
"uhh, well I was starting to train some disciples, so it won't be.."
"thanks, thanks I would not tell anyone"
And like that she came regularly. In this story Qrow is present but have more mission and when Yang got older and more responsible he almost weren't at home since he was afraid of his bad luck. Without realizing Raven ended up being more influencial on Yang and Ruby. She still want to use a scythe like him. But the reason Ruby likes black and red is because of her. Raven still doesn't trust Ozpin and still doesn't want to be involved. After the fall of Beacon and after seeing Yangs depression and abandonment issues she confess only for Yang to feel betray and asking to never see her face.so she does. She still doesn't tell anyone about Raven. After Yang recovery she goes to find Raven to get to Ruby but she still misses her. When she arrives Raven has gotten colder and act different when she is with the tribe. When she asks for a portal with that actitude and in front of the whole tribe, like in canon she refuses to keep appearances.
Everything happens more or less like Canon. Just that after talking with Lionheart she makes a short visit to Yang to give her a clue about the trap. She still want the relic to protect her tribe and still use them as a distraction but at least makes sure to help them. Yang still confront her at the end feeling more betray, not because she lied about being her mother but because she thought she was the best and admired her only to find out she is a coward and killed a child for the powers. Raven still leave since she is still scared of Salem and doesn't trust Ozpin. she leave with a injured but still alive Vernal. She doesn't go to Tai since she has other people she bonded with in the tribe. After Vernal gets well she name her provisional leader and go to Yang. She still doesn't intervene much but keeps an eye on them.

The Brunswick Blooper Reel
“I’m not useless!” Maria snapped, waving off Oscar as she turned around. “I’m just a little hard of hearing. And blind without my eyes. And I have a chronic case of arthritis.”
Oscar blinked, staring at her. As she went on, though, a disbelieving grin formed on his face.
“In fact, it might be osteoporosis. And don’t get me started on the menopause! Actually,” Maria mused thoughtfully, “I might have Alzheimer's too, come to think of it, I don’t remember. Who are all you people again?”
By this point Oscar was hiding his laughter behind a glove. The others, just off screen, were not so discrete.
“That bastard!” Yang stepped forward angrily, pointing a demanding finger. “Bring him back!”
“I can’t!” Oscar cried furtively. “It’s not like before, it’s like he’s locked himself deep inside his head! My head? Oh, I hate this!”
“Actually I just went down to the bakery,” Ozpin explained, walking onto the scene with a wide grin. “Apology cookies anyone?”
A series of groans (and scattered laughter) went up, the annoyed director calling for a cut. Ruby eyed the bag in his hand. “You did get strawberry scones, right?”
“Like I would forget them.”
“Sweet!”
The door to the Brunswick farms was locked shut. And then--
*THWACK*
“Ow! F--sh--raaaaarg...”
“Oh wow,” came Ruby’s voice, “that’s one tough door. We did unlock it for this shot, right?”
“I’d be a little more worried about him,” Blake replied. “You alright there?”
Qrow groaned. “Medic....”
“What do you think?” Blake asked seriously.
Ruby solemnly shook her head. “I don’t know. Something doesn’t feel right--”
A shriek came from upstairs--
“Weiss!”
--followed by a loud “GODDAMNIT!” and a laughing “Oh my god, really?”
Blake blinked. “That’s... not in the script--”
Weiss came storming down the stairs, blushing furiously. “Excuse me, I need to go scrub my eyes.”
“I’m sorry!” called a voice from upstairs.
Yang was chuckling as she descended. “Well, I mean, the bed is supposed to have dead people in it anyway--”
Ruby covered her face with her hands, trying to hide her disbelieving grin as Blake groaned. “Again?! Those two...”
“Welp,” Maria quipped, “I guess shooting is done for today.”
“Is this going in the blooper reel?” Blake asked plaintively.
Yang smirked. “Hell yes!”
Ruby descended into embarrassed giggling.
“Tell you what. You keep that fire going, and I’ll find us a story to read.”
Oscar smiled faintly as Maria hobbled over to the bookshelves.
“Oh look! The kama sutra!”
Baffled laughter escaped the boy’s mouth. “Wh--what? Seriously?”
“It’s a good read,” Maria pointed out.
“No, no no, nooooo.” Oscar held up his hands. “Waaaay too young for that!”
“Huh,” Yang mused, “the workshop is getting really good with these puppets.” She poked one of the inert Apathy experimentally. “I mean, these have got to be the creepiest ones yet.”
“Oh yeah,” Blake agreed. “And have you read the script? These things are just terrifying, really.”
Yang turned to her with a nod. “Yeah, I’m glad these aren’t real. I mean, zombie grimm are bad enough, but the whole will-draining thing--”
Bony fingers brushed her shoulder. “BRAAAAAAAINSSSSS...”
Yang spun around, fists at the ready. “GAH WHAT THE--”
“BRAAAAAAAAAAINSSSS!” Ruby repeated, waving the Apathy’s arms around with a huge grin.
Yang lowered her fists with an angry laugh. “Damn it, leave that kind of trolling in Chibi!”
"Hey, I think I found something,” Yang said. She smiled as she looked down at the trailer, her eyes drifting up to the window--and then she let out a horrified gasp.
One which quickly descended into helpless giggles. “Turn, heehee, turn the camera!”
The camera turned to the window. Through it, in the snow, Adam Taurus could be seen... dressed as a belly-dancer and performing actually quite well.
Yang threw the window open. “Damn it, you’re playing a psychopath! You’ve got to stop doing things like this!” She turned to the camera, helplessly gesturing at the man with a grin. “This guy. This guy!”
Blake sighed. “Adam... Adam always knew how to get into--”
“Mrrrw...”
“--how to get into people’s heads, and--”
“Mrrrrooooooow!”
Yang snorted.
Blake glared at her. “Do you think this is funny?”
“I didn’t say that!” Yang protested, desperately trying to hide her amusement.
Blake rolled her eyes, turning to the shelves and spotting the black cat with yet another dead bird at his paws. “I already told you: I am not interested!”
Yang couldn’t hold it back anymore, bursting out in peals of laughter.
With a sigh, Blake turned to the camera. “The glamor of acting, people.”
“Mrrrooooooooow?”
She gestured at the persistent feline. “Can we get my stalker off the set?!”
Yang’s laughter redoubled as she collapsed out of the shot. Blake glowered down, her leg moving slightly and producing a small thnk sound.
“Ow! Okay, hahaha, fair, but, hee, but still, hahahahahaha!”
With one final long-suffering look to the camera, Blake left the shot.
"Ruby, are we... are we really still going to Atlas?”
Ruby turned, a confused horror subtly creeping into her expression. “Weiss, what are you saying?”
“It’s just--”
“~Oooooh let’s go digital! Yeah let’s go--~”
Ruby fumbled with her scroll for a bit, before pressing the answer button. “Uh, hey there!
“Salutations! I just found this convenience store nearby, do you want me to pick something up for you?”
“Oh, that sounds great, um, definitely some trail mix--no beans or seafood--actually, would it be too much of me to ask you to get some subs or something for everyone on the way down?”
“Not at all! Are there any specific orders you would like?”
“I still don’t like mayonnaise,” Weiss interjected.
There was a moment of silence.
“Did I call you in the middle of a shot again?”
“Yeeeeah.” Ruby chuckled. “Sorry--”
“No no no, it’s my fault entirely. I’ll get the food, and I’ll be down in a bit, alright?”
“Alright. Love you!”
“Love you too! See you soon!” The scroll clicked off.
Ruby shook her head. Then she caught sight of Weiss’s look. “What?”
“I’m happy for you,” Weiss assured her with a grin.
Ruby glanced away. “Mmmrngh...” She couldn’t help the corner of her lips twitching upward.
Ruby picked up the golden bottle. Her face contorted with quiet rage, and she flung it away.
It bounced against the wall and started rolling across the ground.
After a moment, Ruby sighed. “It didn’t shatter, did it.”
Four of the Apathy strode on stage, wearing hats and wielding canes as team RWBY expertly puppeted them through a dance routine.
“~Spooky scary skeletons send shivers down your spine, Shrieking skulls will shock your soul and seal your doom tonight! Spooky scary skeletons speak with such a screech, You'll shake and shudder in surprise when you hear these zombies shriek!...~”
“We’re all tired,” Oscar pointed out wearily.
“Maybe if we’re all so exhausted we should eat?” Blake suggested.
“Yeah,” Oscar agreed. “A nice bowl of cereal.”
“Pancakes,” Blake added. “Two plates.”
“Crispy bacon, prepared juuuust right.”
“Eggs over easy, on top of french bread.”
“Cinnamon toast.”
“What?”
“It’s cinnamon toast,” Oscar said seriously. “French bread is the baguette.”
“Well, you can use a baguette to make cinnamon toast, right?”
“I mean, sure, but then where does the madness end? Cereal in orange juice? Syrup-slathered ham? Breakfast burritos slathered in chocolate?”
“Actually,” Ruby interjected, “that last one sounds pretty good.”
“I once had a deep-fried stack of pancakes,” Weiss mused. “Not actually that bad.”
“I subscribe to the ‘take five cans of anything, dump in some noodles, and boil it all’ philosophy of cooking,” Yang added.
“You’d be surprised what kind of crazy combinations people can come up with,” Maria added. “Ever hear of muffin pizza?”
Oscar looked at them all in horror. “My god... you’re all insane.”
"Look, we can just drop it in the well,” Yang suggested. “Sure, the Grimm might find it, but it would take time. A year... ten... it may not even happen in our lifeline.”
There was a moment where everyone processed that.
“...Damn it.” Yang facepalmed. “I didn’t even mean to say that!”
“Yarr maties,” Blake growled, “batten down tha hatches, there be a storm a-comin’!”
Weiss snorted. “See, my mind went to ‘Who Wants To Be A Millionaire.’”
Ruby turned to the camera with the biggest of grins. “I’ll take Grimm Studies for three hundred, please!”
“Alright, alright!” Yang rolled her eyes. “Come on, let me give this another take.”
Ruby picked up the golden bottle. Her face contorted with quiet rage, and she flung it away.
It bounced against the wall, landing on its base and waggling to a stop.
Ruby glanced over her shoulder, then turned to the camera with an expression of utter deadpan.
Ruby dropped into the well, shortly after followed by her teammates. She took her scroll and raised it warily... and then moved her thumb with a mischievous smirk.
“~Cause this is THRILLEEEEEER! THRILLER NIGHT! And noone’s gonna save ya from the beast about to strike--~”
Ruby was already dancing and, after an amused glance, the other three joined in. Then Maria moonwalked into the scene with a huge grin.
“Having fun without me, dearies?”
“Woo!” Yang shouted. “Rock it granny!”
She did indeed proceed to rock it.
Maria clutched at the stairs, looking up desperately. “An exit!”
Weiss rushed past her--and ended up knocking her over with a loud THWUMP! She turned around, caught sight of the old woman, and covered her mouth with her hands.
“Oh my gosh, I--I am so sorry!” She walked back down slowly. “Are you alright?”
“...Medic...”
Ruby reached out desperately to her teammate, collapsed in front of the oncoming horde. “Blake...”
Blake looked at her, eyes... glittering with mischief, as she put a hand on her hip and adopted a catlike smirk. “Draw me like one of your french girls.”
Instantly everyone cracked up, one of the Apathy even clapping sarcastically.
“Oh come on, you were all thinking it!”
Ruby picked up the golden bottle. Her face contorted with quiet rage, and she flung it away.
It bounced against the wall and--
"OW! Ow ow ow, damn it!”
Qrow blinked, turning to her. “What? What just happened?”
“The bottle bounced against the wall and hit her head,” Oscar helpfully provided from off-screen.
“The hell? Are these things made of rubber or something?” Qrow gave Ruby a concerned look. “Kid, you okay?”
“I think I’m bleeding,” Ruby reported in amused pain. “Ow. Medic?”
Ruby glared angrily, her teeth clenched as she peered at her foes.
“Aaaaaand cut!”
She turned to the camera with a bright smile. “Now see, that’s going to look a lot more impressive once they edit the silver eye stuff in in post.”
The camera focused on the metal cellar doors, zooming in dramatically on the chain--
--which jerked briefly.
“OW! Damn it, what the hell is that chain made of, adamantium?”
“Uh,” came Blake’s voice, “you doing alright there?”
“It’s an easy shot, they said. Punch open the door, they said! Damn it, I think my hand’s dead.”
“So...” Ruby mused. “Do you need a medic, or a technician?”
“My other fist is still working fine, missy.”
"We need to go!” Ruby cried.
“Not yet,” Weiss decreed, grabbing a bottle off the shelf. She threw it overhand at the cellar...
...and it bounced off the head of an Apathy, landing cork-first on the ground without spilling a drop.
“...What the hell?!”
“I know, right?!”
"They’re called the Apathy,” Maria explained morosely. “They’re not strong, or ferocious, or cunning. They just drain your will--”
The entire trailer suddenly jerked to a stop. A moment later, Bumblebee rolled behind it, engine cutting off.
“You all alright?” Yang asked.
“Yeah,” Ruby sighed. “We’re just going to have to hook this up and start this shot over.”
"Isn’t it obvious, girl?” Maria turned a sad smile on Ruby. “I have silver eyes.”
There was a moment where they all processed that.
“Um...” Ruby held up a finger. “Don’t you mean ‘had?’“
“Oh, I still have them,” Maria replied brightly, “they’re in my pocket here, let me show you!”
Everyone else broke out giggling, Ruby feebly protesting with a wave. “No, ew, gross! I believe you!”

Why I think some fans don’t like Ruby
A good protagonist can make or break a story. You can have an incredibly detailed world and setting, fill it with the most fascinating lore and and have an encyclopedia’s worth of information on every street, but if the person you’re following in that world is uninteresting or just dull, the audience will never let that slide. Watch Dogs is a competent game but Aiden Pearce is such a dull scumbag that it taints the entire setting. Echo from Dollhouse was perhaps the dullest character in the main roster, making the show more interesting when she wasn’t around as it gave the much more varied supporting cast a chance to shine.
This is unfortunately a problem that people have with RWBY’s Ruby Rose as well. Ruby is a do-gooder with aspirations to become a Huntress and help people and that’s basically it in terms of explicit character growth. For a variety of reasons over the past two years since Volume 4, Ruby has become a far more divisive character than was ever intended. With Volume 6 now on the horizon, I’ve decided to look into our inarguable main protagonist and to answer the question of why I think some people don’t like Ruby.
Tumblr media
(also before anyone jumps down my throat I don’t hate Ruby, I think she’s a weak character but I don’t want her removed from the show. Also, yes, she is the protagonist, we’re not having this conversation)
1) Ruby’s development in Volumes 4 and 5 is lackluster at best and actively shunted at worst
To be quite blunt, Ruby’s not interesting in her current form and she hasn’t truthfully been since Volume 3′s conclusion. Ruby started out as a fine character, with some good early development from Ozpin about what it means to be a leader, development which had a payoff when Ruby then shared this lesson with Jaune during the Jaundice episodes. “We have to put our teammates first and ourselves second.” Back then Ruby also had several more facets to her personality- she was a naive child brought to Beacon two years early and a lot of her dynamics, especially with Weiss in particular, reflect this in the early volumes. Volume 1 also gives Ruby her overly romanticized view of Huntsmen and Huntresses, further emphasizing her naivety regarding the wider world which is challenged multiple times in the first three volumes- most notably with Roman’s “The real world is cold!” speech in Heroes and Monsters.
Volume 3 set out to tear those perceptions down, as Ruby bears witness to some horrifying actions in the back half of the Volume- Penny’s dismemberment, Grimm swarming Vale, Roman being eaten alive and Pyrrha being shot and incinerated right in front of her. Ruby breaks from this, Volume 4 was touted as a recovery volume. And yet Ruby’s development is a phantom for Volumes 4 and 5. She puts on a bright smile and other than a few nightmares which exist for very little reason- especially since RTX 2017 confirmed that Ruby was having dreams about Pyrrha because she overheard Jaune’s night-training and not because of other circumstances- Ruby doesn’t ever confront the trauma she faced like Yang and Blake did over their arcs in Volume 4. The one time she tries taking responsibility in the back half of the volume... Jaune shuts her down, literally cutting her off so he can tell her she’s inspiring, which she agrees with blindly, her inner conflict having been forgotten and blown away like leaves falling off a tree in October.
Tumblr media
You know I mentioned this in my Jaune post but it bears repeating that the one time Ruby really tries to get development this season, Jaune literally steals the spotlight and tells the audience, rather than shows us, how far Ruby’s come
Most of the other RWBY girls get scenes on their own during Volume 4- in fact, the other three members all have moments of solitude in their first episodes. It shows how the Fall of Beacon has separated them and scattered them across the world. Ruby gets no such moment of isolation. Ruby not having this doesn’t give her character any moments where she has to confront the events at Beacon, and that lack of isolation or ability to reflect harms her. The one time her facade breaks away in Volume 4, Jaune swoops in to prevent her from having a realization and the problem is smoothed away like it never happened. This also has an adverse effect on our ability to sympathize with Ruby- her not blaming herself despite Jaune’s act of kindness makes it difficult to identify with her struggles and any growth she might have experienced.
Tumblr media
I think that half of Ruby’s dialogue in all of Volume 4 comes from her reading her letter to Yang in the finale is a fairly harrowing example of where Ruby’s focus is not going.
Volume 5 did take a step towards addressing this by having Oscar ask Ruby how she remains so cheerful- a scene I firmly believe should have happened a year earlier with Jaune instead of handing it off to the farmboy who never before or after this scene addresses the stresses of the shadow war with Salem. The scene is fairly obviously damage control for Ruby’s lack of reaction to Volume 3 but this scene has no payoff. Ruby just admits she’s sad, we get a traditional hero speech about moving forward and then the status quo resets for Ruby’s next adventure in sitting around a house.
To cut this rant short, Volumes 4 and 5 do very little with Ruby and the opportunity for development that the Fall of Beacon presented. Rather than having a hopeful naive child face reality, something Roman was trying to do with his dying words, Ruby just backtracks and almost flanderizes into this upbeat chipmunk who spews out inspirational speeches. Ruby’s never allowed to grow in 4 or 5 and her character stagnates as a consequence. A pivotal moment for Ruby should have been her confrontation with Cinder at Haven (something I’ve written about before) and seeing Weiss get stabbed, but Cinder refuses to acknowledge her for the entire battle and she’s unconscious when Weiss drops. Two moments that should have defined her character... and Ruby sidesteps both of them and the challenges therein.
If I may repeat myself, half of Ruby’s dialogue in V4 comes from her letter to Yang in the finale. Half of her dialogue is in the finale of the season. If that doesn’t speak about bad agency and character handling I’m afraid I don’t know what does.
And all of this leads us into...
2) Ask about the eyes! (or: Ruby’s lack of agency)
I’m sure if you’ve been a part of the fandom you’ve heard this a thousand times, so I’ll keep this quick:
Ruby’s eyes are supposedly the key to stopping the Grimm and the only reason Cinder was defeated at the end of Volume 3, and will almost certainly play a role in fighting Salem. Despite knowing about them thanks to Qrow and spending a significant amount of time with Qrow and Ozpin, people who knew her mother (a fellow Silver Eyed Warrior) intimately well, Ruby never asks about the eyes during the month she spends with Ozpin and Qrow in the Mistral House. There’s no logical reason in or out of the narrative for her to not immediately ask about this when she reached the house and when the eyes manifest again in the Battle of Haven, no fuss is made about them and they don’t get acknowledged for the rest of the volume.
... OK that was relatively quick. But put bluntly, Ruby not asking about her eyes or Summer has crippled her development. Summer’s death would be an almost childishly simple way to give Ruby a personal stake in the fight against Salem, since it’s all but been confirmed (”We’ve dealt with their kind before”) that Summer was slain by a member of Salem’s cabal. It speaks poorly about Ruby’s priority levels and the agency of herself, Ozcar and Qrow that Ruby never stops to ask either of them about the eyes and instead decides to ask Ozpin if his cane is the Beacon Relic.
There is however a meta out of universe reason, in that Miles and Kerry aren’t ready to ask about the eyes yet. In my post about why the birds twist failed to land, I mentioned this as an aside that Miles and Kerry have a particular fondness for cliffhangers and plot twists, and while this works sometimes, it means that it can take a fair while for them to answer questions that would otherwise spoil their little tricks and twists in advance. Ruby asking about the eyes would ruin whatever twist is tied to them- be it that they steal life energy or have the risk of blinding her- so she... doesn’t. And there isn’t even a throwaway line about her referencing the existence of her Silver Eyes.
If V4 or 5 had just had a scene of Ruby about to fight a Grimm like say, the Geist and trying to manifest them or just having a scene where she explains she’s trying to activate the powers, it would at least show initiative on her part- she would be at least trying to activate her powers since she knows they pose a threat to the Grimm and Cinder. But she doesn’t. In fact, Ruby herself never even says the word “silver” after Volume 3. At this point any explanation of the Silver Eyes is going to feel... almost too little too late. It wouldn’t feel natural anymore, since the information was held back because it would make for a better twist or some nonsense.
3) The Squeak
I mean no offense to Lindsay Jones, she’s a capable actress and by all accounts an all-around good person. I love Kimball from Red vs Blue and Lindsays’ other appearances for Rooster Teeth have proven she has great comedic timing and dramatic chops. But that said... Ruby’s voice was awful in Volume 5.
youtube
Lindsay has always been on the record as disliking how Ruby sounded in Volume 1- too much like herself, far too old sounding for a 15 year old girl, to the point where she’d like to go back and re-dub Volume 1. I get that, especially hating how your voice sounds since I work in radio and I know that pain, and I think how Lindsay evolved the voice over Volumes 2 and 3 was a great place to keep Ruby’s voice until she grew up and went back to the Volume 1 voice. The problem is that in the above video, Lindsay evidently never stopped upping the pitch. Ruby now sounds almost like a caricature of herself and one that steadily worsens each passing volume- I’ve made my dislike of “This is my fight too!” plain as day on various occasions on Discord. I don’t want to harp too much on this, like I said I deeply respect Lindsay’s other work, but this is a list of why the fandom is cold on Ruby and unfortunately for Miss Jones... her voice is one of those reasons, however petty it may seem. If you do ever read this Lindsay:
youtube
(still gotta support Lindsay for being the only person in RT at the moment who seems to want Ruby to have a breaking point because moooooooooooooood)
4) Decreasing skill levels
More than any other character, Ruby was the one most hit on a fighting-level by Monty’s passing. In hindsight having a weapon such as a scythe was going to spell trouble for Ruby’s fight scenes- scythes are hilariously impractical weapons in real life and aren’t made for fighting. There’s a reason most farmers didn’t bring their scythes with them when they went to war and were taught the spear.
With Monty, Ruby was still given flashy choreography and her scythe’s recoil was used to make it slightly more practical in a straight fight. In the opening to Ruby vs Neo and the Red Trailer she looks lethal with the thing.
Tumblr media
The problem lies in how Ruby’s skills have waned since then, thanks to not only the general nerf everyone took across the board, but Ruby’s scythe took in particular. Ruby’s only seriously used her scythe once, in the V4 Character Short. Otherwise, she hasn’t gotten to cut loose in the show since then, meaning Ruby’s been reduced to running around and sniping or doing... this...
Tumblr media
You thought I was done bitching about the weapon spinning but joke’s on you, I’m never done bitching about the weapon spinning
This has been Ruby’s fights for the past two years. In a show that prides itself on fights, Ruby’s last good fight being more than two volumes ago paints a poor picture in the eyes of many, especially in light of the Death Battle team admitting that they can’t have Ruby fight Maka from Soul Eater until Ruby gets a few more feats to be judged by (which still reads to me like “we need Ruby to do some more bullshit feats so we can BS a win for her” after the whole Yang/Tifa debacle). This also ties in with Ruby’s lack of activity in the Battle of Haven- it’s Raven, a low-rent villain, who gets the standout fight in the volume, while Ruby’s left headbutting Mercury. The protagonist of the show is left with little of the agency.
And speaking of Mercury...
5) The hand to hand “plot”
Like the Silver Eyes part I’ll keep this quick- Ruby’s hand to hand weakness, while set up in Volumes 1 and 2, still comes out of nowhere as a random flaw for her to overcome this volume and feels like a poor attempt to give her something to do during Volume 5. Her headbutting Mercury required Merc to take a massive dive in intelligence and skill, and ultimately was her only significant moment in the Haven Battle outside of getting smacked over the head. The worst part of this “arc” to me is how no one else gets anything from it- you could genuinely make an arc of each member of RNJR teaching Oscar something (Ren with Aura and CQC, Nora with strength training, Ruby with weapon repairs, etc). Why not tie in the conversation about Semblances by having Ruby train to use her speed semblance in close quarters? With her speed, Ruby would be nearly impossible to dodge in a fist-fight, or she could engage in lighting fast strikes while withdrawing before the opponent and counter.
Also while I’m offering suggestions, let me point one thing out. Ruby has a lot of leg strength. Like, a lot. Why not skip teaching her to use her hands and train Ruby in kickboxing or another leg-based martial art? Yang already has the punchy-punch category fairly locked down, so giving Ruby a kick-based style would make for more dramatic fights in future.
Tumblr media
It would certainly have been more dynamic than this abomination that I am loathe to call “the conclusion of an arc.”
In conclusion, Ruby as a protagonist is... flawed. She’s a character I want to like more than I do, the simple soul who knows the world is cold and dark but aspires to change it herself. But various conflicts hold her character back, most primarily the writing team’s own refusal to let her have agency by making her refuse to acknowledge her special powers or her dead mother. Add in lackluster performances fighting wise and an absolute slog of a “training arc,” and Ruby fails to stand out. Volume 5 reached the point where Ruby was an absolute blank slate of a character, content to make bland speeches about companionship at the pitch of a chipmunk addicted to helium while the mystery of her dead mother and special heritage practically slapped her in the face.
I am very much aware that over the Volume 5 hiatus, much has been said about Ruby and her lack of growth/dive in popularity. Hell I’m even linking to some at the bottom of the post as recommendations for further elaboration on my points and alternate perspectives. I know I’m at a well that has been well and truly dried of content. But with Volume 6 on the horizon I think it’s worth keeping Ruby’s agency/lack thereof in mind with the premiere looming. Ruby is a problem that the show does need to fix, especially after Volume 5 and the numerous story opportunities that were presented and never followed up on for Ruby- Weiss’s stabbing, Cinder’s return, Summer, etc. Her big character moment in the back half of Volume 5? Saying “I’m angry.” They really did pick the perfect character moment for Ruby.
Ruby has been said to take a more direct role in Volume 6, and Lindsay has implied that Ruby will finally have her breaking point this volume. If this turns out to be the case, I genuinely look forward to see Ruby regaining the charm that made her likable in the original volumes. But if all the talk about Ruby getting more focus turns out to just be hot air or fails to fix any of the cracks in her character that have been present for two volumes in a row now? I’ll be tragically disappointed, partly at the show and mostly for myself in jumping the gun in writing this. I want Ruby to be more than a glorified cheerleader in her own damn show. She’s what got people hyped back with the Red trailer. Let her be that heroine again Rooster Teeth. Ruby inspires people in the show, now let’s see her inspire hope in the fans.

RWBY Rewrite: Raven Branwen
Hey there everybody! You know, I was debating Raven and Adam for quite a bit until inspiration hit on the former teammate of Team STRQ and candidate for worst mother in the show. And you know how writers get when they’ve stumbled across something.
Still, Raven is definitely one of the more disappointing characters, having made a strong first impression for further appearances to take away the coolness. Most of the disappointment comes from her being set up as a third party to Oz vs Salem conflict, which could offer a unique perspective on both sides of the conflict. Unfortunately, she came off as selfish manipulate bitch that the main reason we cheered her on during the end of Volume 5 was because Cinder was much MUCH worse.
Now with these rewrites, I don’t intend to change fighting styles and weapons (mainly because I have no idea how to do that, unlike certain people I am fully capable of admitting when I am out of my depth and leave that to someone who knows what they’re talking about). As for personalities, I don’t think I’m massively rewriting them given how little some of these characters had been given, but you can correct me if I’m wrong. Raven will still be a strong bandit leader with a survival of the fittest mentality.
Now the first thing I would change is in regards to her semblance, albeit more along the lines of refining what was already established. Her portals lead to people she has bonded tp, but bonding is not so simple as it seems. The type of bonding needed for this would be someone she trusts wholeheartedly, someone she would willingly die for. These bonds of hers are both her strength and her weakness. When a bond is established, Raven is then attuned emotionally to them, always having a sense of them in the back of her mind and feeling their general mental state. Much like Qrow’s semblance, she can never truly turn it off. As such, she is fully aware of what Yang feels about her as well as being the first person to know about Summer’s death due to feeling it. Naturally, this a very emotional side effect and plays quite the role in her relationships with Yang and Summer.
The big changes would relate to her main relationships of the story: the Branwen Tribe, Team STRQ, Ozpin, and Yang.
Branwen Tribe
In the show, the Branwen Tribe was the Disposable Mook Group Number Thirteen with no real depth to them. Under this tag, I was originally going give an overview the Tribe’s history and culture, but it became too lengthy. I’ll have that as an additional separate post. Long story short, they are going to be much more dangerous and a lot more connected to the history and culture of Anima.
As to Raven’s relationship to the Tribe in general, it’s a lot more complex. Unlike Qrow who was always kind of an outcast, Raven was actually well regarded by the Tribe and was seen as a potential successor to the Chieftain of the time. While Raven knows the Tribe was brutal and unforgiving, it was her home and there were people she did care about there (though not as much Qrow). In fact, Vernal was the daughter of a late friend of hers that she took under her wing, basically her goddaughter. In addition, Raven never truly felt comfortable in the Kingdoms. Even as grew to care for her teammates and fell in to the lifestyle of a huntress, she could never conform completely to the system. At least part of the reason she did leave her teammates and Yang was because the Tribe was where she felt she belonged. Still selfish, but selfish for an understandable reason.
The one other thing to clarify in relation to the Branwen Tribe is the former Spring Maiden. For someone trying to keep a low profile, taking in one of the biggest targets on Salem’s list seems counterproductive. In this rewrite, Raven would take her in due to a sense of empathy, with the girl having discovered Leo’s treachery and was desperate to get as far away as she could. Her death by Raven’s hands would genuinely be an act of mercy, having been fatally injured during a raid and the only thing that could be done is make her death quick and less painful. As to inheriting the Maiden powers, Raven would not have known about the cutoff date for being Maiden and kind of assumed she was too old by that point (would have turned thirty in a week). This was because Ozpin wouldn’t have told her and the others every little detail about magic and his situation, though this time it was more to him viewing it as a trivial detail rather than actively trying to hide it.
Team STRQ
Her relationships with her teammates are equal parts love and care with anger and frustration. Before Beacon, Qrow was the only bondmate she had. Summer and Tai she took a while to warm up to, but grew close to them despite trying not to do so because she felt nothing could ever truly come of it. And in this Rewrite, she’s not the sole reason Team STRQ falls apart; none of them are completely blameless.
Qrow was the first bond she ever forged and is arguably the strongest bond she has. Part of the reason she wanted the position of Chieftain was so that she could make things better for her brother in the Tribe. While heading to Beacon led them to new experiences and new bonds, it also led to a distance growing between as Qrow took to the Kingdoms and everything in them. This would lead to Raven feeling somewhat lonely and jealous, in how her brother was so much happier then when it had just been them. This distance only grows as they get involved with Ozpin and the bigger conflict. The more Raven sees, the more concerned she gets and brings up her doubts about Ozpin to Qrow as well as mentioning that they should probably return to the Tribe soon. Qrow at first brushes her off, getting more irritated as she continues with it. This would culminate in an argument in which Qrow tells his sister off for being so distrusting of the man who’s trying to save humanity and that the Tribe should rot for all the things they’ve done; he’d rather die than go back. It’s at this point Raven realizes that her brother won’t listen to her anymore. These bittersweet feelings influence her relationship with her brother to this day; as much as she cares about him, she can’t save him. This will also play a part in her relationship with Ozpin.
Her relationship with Tai didn’t start off with the best first impressions (she definitely had to restrain from strangling him during the Initiation and almost did during the first week of classes), but eventual grew very strong. Unfortunately, the relationship while passionate, was between two people who are not suited for long term romantic relationships. Raven has her obvious issues and I’ll get Tai’s in his post(believe me, there will quite a bit to discuss). Not to mention they’re two people with vastly different goals and expectations out of a relationship. Tai was happy in teaching and in Vale, there was no way she could have convinced him to throw it all away for the bandit life style. Raven does still have some fond feelings for him, but she does get even more frustrated with Tai than Qrow as she feels he could have tried to talk the girls out of becoming huntresses or at least told them the whole truth of things before they went off to Beacon.
Last but not least we have Summer. Raven didn’t really like Summer at first because she really didn’t seem like leadership material, much like Weiss and Ruby at the beginning. It isn’t until Raven gets a demonstration of “Good is Not Nice” from her leader that she really began to respect her. The relationship grew and by the time Raven was leaving for the Tribe, Summer was the only positive relationship she had at that point. In fact, she actually tried to convince Summer to come with her, but Summer declined as she had reasons of her own for fighting for Ozpin along with their other teammates to watch over. Summer also shared quite a bit with Raven, including the price behind the Silver Eye powers which is a lot more costly than in the canon. Raven’s respect was so great that she asked Summer to be the mother Yang needed and explain things to the girl when she was old enough to understand. This plan is naturally torn apart by Summer’s death. Due to their bondmate connection, Raven fully felt Summer’s death and to this day, it is something she has not gotten over(whether these feelings are platonic, sisterly, or romantic, I leave that to fan speculation). Half of her blames herself for not going to her side, at the time she was helping her people in the midst of a natural disaster. The other half blames Ozpin.
Ozpin
Oh boy, Ozpin may not be her strongest relationship, but it is perhaps the one that had the most impact on her life. Raven’s first impressions of Ozpin was someone to respect, but not trust as it seemed he was keeping a close eye on her and Qrow. It would take a while for her to realize he was keeping a close eye on Team STRQ as a whole and wouldn’t fully get the answers to that until Ozpin filled them in on the greater conflict. Long story short, Tai decides not to get in any further but the other three are brought into the inner circle. Raven is driven by the need to know more, but ultimately finding the truth to be more horrible than she imagined.
It starts with the bird magic. Unlike the canon, the bird transformation does have significant issues with it. On the minor side, the two will behave a bit more like birds such as having cravings for seeds, being drawn to shiny objects, etc. On the major side though, the magic also amplifies their fight/flight instincts and it gets stronger the longer they stay in bird form to the point where if they stay transformed long enough they will slowly forget their humanity (which is why they will transform for an hour at most). Now, to Ozpin’s defense, this was not something he deliberately kept from them, these were unintended side effects. Raven, however, is pissed that he didn’t consider how the magic might have affected them and could have warned them after Qrow and her stay transform for a little too long with Summer snapping them back to themselves. And that’s not the only problem she has with Ozpin.
As mentioned earlier, she did grow concerned with what she had learned and getting the whole truth about Salem and Ozpin as well as the lengths Ozpin has gone to defeat her, Raven’s doubts come to a head and she tries to get her brother to understand her point of view and get out. By this point, Qrow is fully committed to Ozpin’s brotherhood and views her actions and mindset as being unreasonable and selfish. While their relationship wasn’t as close as they were before, this confrontation was an utter shock to Raven. From there on, she blames Ozpin for “stealing” her brother and “blinding” him to the reality of the conflict.
But what really cements her hatred of Ozpin and giving up the fight with Salem is Summer’s death. Summer died at Salem’s hands, on a mission for Ozpin, and Raven was emotionally connected to her when she died. In response, Raven would make her way to Ozpin to confront him, which is also how he and others get the news. While Ozpin is genuinely grieved by Summer’s death, his first reaction to Raven’s words is frustration and despair that not even Summer using her eyes could stop Salem. THIS is Raven’s breaking point, the realization that Ozpin will use anything and anyone for his war Salem, even people he does significantly care about. After everything that Summer had done for him.... She actually attacks him for this, only to beaten down by Ozpin. He lets her go, but warns her to never return to Beacon and he won’t be so lenient if she tries this again.
In other words, this is where Sacrifice comes from.
Yang
Out of all her relationships, Raven’s feelings for her daughter are the most complicated. For starters, I don’t think Yang was a planned pregnancy (neither was Ruby in my opinion). Tai was the over moon about it, but Raven wasn’t as thrilled. Partly because her doubt with Ozpin had had her seriously consider returning to the Tribe and the pregnancy was a delay in that, but also because Raven had absolutely no idea how to be a mom and didn’t have much in terms of maternal instinct. Contrary to popular belief, not all women have a natural inclination and understanding of children and babies (myself included). Ultimately, it wasn’t Yang’s fault she left, she had planned on going back to the Tribe from the beginning and she will tell Yang all this when she asks for answers.
She did consider taking Yang with her back to the Tribe, but realized that she couldn’t take care of a baby like that and Yang would be better off growing up inside one of the kingdoms. Like I said, she did entrust Summer to be the mother she couldn’t be and to tell Yang the truth when she was old enough. After Summer died, she really wasn’t in a state to come back even if she wanted to return. After sometime, she did resolve to pop back and check up on Yang from time to time. It does hurt her a bit that Yang has such obviously negative feelings towards her, but she accepts it and is fully okay with her daughter viewing Summer as her mother figure. She, in no way, regrets her choice.
And if there is one thing she is impressed by it’s how protective Yang is of Ruby because it reminds her how protective she got with Qrow when they were younger. Raven’s feelings on Ruby are complicated (she’s perfectly okay with Tai moving on, but the timing is rather questionable), but her respect for Summer and love for Yang does make Ruby fall under her one save rule as well as something else. On the journey to Mistral, Team RNJR and Qrow come close to perishing and are saved by Raven’s timely intervention. Tense atmosphere aside, she points them in the right direction and gives Ruby a warning both about the conflict she was walking straight into and not to use her Silver Eye powers unless she wants to follow her mother and grandfather’s path into an early grave.
Her role in the story would still be that of a third party and she will be both enemy and ally to the group during different points in the story. I do plan on her dying to help them as well as Qrow and Tai get away to safety, after finding out that there is a way to bring the conflict to an end and realizing that Summer fought not because she wanted to save the world, but because she wanted to protect those she cared about. In the end, she would die with her mind at peace and her last thoughts would be of either Yang or Ruby, passing on the Spring Maiden powers.
Oh boy, this post got long. And the next one’s going to be on Branwen Tribe history and culture. Maybe after that, I’ll get to Adam or Pyrrha. Hope you guys are up for that!

Diving Deep
Hello, @badluckcharm-exe! It’s finally done! Sorry this took forever and a day. Inspiration decided to take a vacation for a while... Regardless, I hope you enjoy this. I’ll be sure to get it up on AO3 tomorrow 💚
Prompt was for a Mermaid AU.
“Row, row, row your boat gently down the stream! Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily life is but a dream. Row, row, row your boat gently down the stream—”
“Holy shit, kid, you’re twelve. Don’t you know any other songs?”
Oscar blinked, finally drawing his gaze away from the aquarium. The hallway they stood in had water on both sides as well as above, a dome that never failed to leave Qrow’s stomach queasy because good god what happened if that glass ever broke? Oscar had no such reservations. He pressed right against the barrier—things with teeth passing him by—until the water rippled off his skin and there was a green tint to his eyes.
“I’m fourteen,” he said, head cocked strangely against the glass.
“That’s worse.”
Oscar shrugged. “I like it. The song I mean. Row, row, row your boat gently down the stream. If you meet the kelpie’s eyes then don’t forget to scream.”
…What the actual fuck?
It wasn’t the first time the kid had said something totally off the wall. Qrow leaned on his mop, watching Oscar tap the glass until, coincidentally, a bright orange fish swam up to where he stood. Qrow had worked at Atlas Labs nearly a year now and knew that, no matter what Ozpin claimed, they were only surrounded by a bunch of dumb animals. You couldn’t train a fish to come when called, no more than he’d been able to train Oscar to be marginally less annoying. Honestly, what the ever loving hell was a kelpie?
“Hey.” Qrow tapped his boot until Oscar finally looked his way. The fish immediately swam off. “If you’re just gonna stand there how about you help me wipe down the glass?” That way Qrow didn’t need to go near all that nonsense. “All boys your age should have chores. Builds character. Or something.”
For reasons unknown to him Oscar’s eyes strayed to the bucket full of water next to Qrow’s feet. He split into a grin.
“Nope! Tell Dad I said hi!”
And Oscar scurried off, boots squeaking on the tiled floor as he disappeared around a corner. He’d left smudges on the glass and a scuff where he’d stood. Great.
Another bug-eyed fish bumped against the glass parallel to Qrow’s head. He scowled.
“What the hell are you looking at?”
***
Atlas Labs. Renowned world-wide for their cutting advancements in marine biology. Not exactly the sort of research that got Qrow all hot and bothered, but what could he say? People were weird. Apparently while most looked to the skies for answers to Earth’s problems, the real scientists were turning to the many mysteries of the seas. Our origins, future, even a chance at immortality—all of it was hidden somewhere beneath the waves. At least, that’s what Ozpin claimed.
Not that Ozpin was any less weird than his son.
“Your brat says ‘hi.’”
Lithe and tall enough to hit his head on the occasional hanging lamp, Ozpin Pine presumably had his picture printed next to the dictionary definition of ‘eccentric.’ Qrow had never seen him in anything other than a wrinkled green suit (not the same one every day… surely?) and a lab coat stained with all sorts of things that he never needed identified, thanks. A mop of white hair looked perpetually windblown despite the fact that the man rarely stepped outside and Oz wore these teeny tiny glasses that couldn’t possibly help a flea see, let alone a grown-ass man. He wore rings on his fingers, a long line of earrings, and had hidden tattoos that Qrow sometimes caught peeking out from beneath the cuff of his shirt. It hurt to look at him. In the same way it hurt to look at an ongoing car wreck while being blinded by the sun. Ozpin was, simply put, an oddball.
And Qrow would have laid down his life for him.
Heh. Not to be dramatic or anything, but there weren’t many world-renowned scientists in this place who’d design to speak kindly to their janitor. Or speak to him at all. His first day Ozpin had slipped a sweet from his pocket into Qrow’s hand, made some horrendous joke, introduced Oscar as “My much beloved offspring” (what?), and capped it all off with the warmest smile Qrow had ever had the privilege of soaking up. Those scraps of kindness would have bred devotion on their own, but Ozpin genuinely seemed to like him, as ridiculous as that seemed. Qrow had thought this job was going to be the worst of the many he’d grabbed in the last three years. Instead it was…
Interesting. Yeah. It was something alright.
Ozpin had no inkling of Qrow’s inner judgement. He was too busy comically looking around the floor, or roughly around the height where a pint-sized teen might stand.
“My brat?” he asked, smiling so wide the florescent lights glinted off his back teeth. He took another candy from his pocket and munched it, seemingly thoughtful. Qrow had heard the other scientists bitching about Ozpin bringing food into the labs, claiming that it would attract animals. Like they weren’t already surrounded by animals. Duh.
Qrow eyed the tank in the far corner of Ozpin’s office. Like every other room in Atlas it was a space with aquarium tendencies, though this tank wasn’t listed on any of the public tours. The fish in there were clearly some special experiment of Oz’s, with bright neon strips on top and transparent bodies below. Qrow caught a glimpse of fish skeleton and swallowed back a gag.
“Yes, your brat. He kept bugging me while I cleaned the entryway. Don’t you have a leash for him or something?” Qrow started emptying the trash bins while Oz watched, gaze so focused it seemed to sizzle a hole in the back of his uniform. He did a lot of that. Watching. Qrow had also heard the other nerds complaining about Ozpin’s overly observant nature, saying he wasn’t just intense, but downright creepy.
Weren’t science types supposed to be curious about everything though? If Ozpin wanted to examine the slope of Qrow’s ass, then by all means.
He bent a little farther while picking up the next can, just in case that really was what Oz was interested in. Gray slacks and beige boots weren’t exactly the height of style, but Qrow was confident in his ability to work even the saddest of outfits. Besides, it wasn’t like Ozpin had room to judge. Today he had a stack of jelly bracelets on his left wrist and an octopus pin on the collar of his coat. The man was a hodge-podge of strange adornments, wearing each and every one like they were actually fashionable.
Months he’d been at this job and Qrow was still trying to figure out if the man was just that dense or just that indifferent. Besides, none of this even touched on Ozpin’s tendency to—
“I’m afraid not. I tried a leash of kelp once and Oscar slipped right out of it. He always was such a nimble little fry.”
—say weird shit.
Like father, like son. Apparently.
Qrow paused in the act of dumping five billion used tissues into his cart. He pinched the bridge of his nose. It was 10:00 at night and he didn’t have the energy to tackle whatever the hell a kelp leash was. Instead Qrow raised a single finger, letting it flop. “Nimble fry? Should I serve Oscar up with ketchup tomorrow?”
Which resulted in Ozpin throwing his head back and laughing—literally, like something out of a cartoon. His desk was a mess of papers covered in rainbow highlighting and the bookcase next to that was organized by color rather than genre. Or heaven forbid, last name. Between those and the fish (and his iffy fashion sense) Ozpin was surrounded by color in the otherwise sterile room. It was like this wherever he went. Ozpin blended in with the vibrant life of the tanks around them; always looking like he was more at home with the water just out of reach. Qrow supposed that was a good thing for a man who’d devoted his life to marine biology. It did make one wonder about stupid, sappy things though. Like fate maybe. What kind of man was born with eyes the color of sand and a smile that lit you up like a glimpse of the horizon?
Sometimes Qrow wondered if he’d hear waves if he listened for Oz’s heartbeat. Would he taste salt on his lips?
Right now Qrow had neither. All he could smell was trash.
“A fry is a juvenile fish,” Ozpin said, still wiping tears from his eyes. “Ah, but you’re a fry too, aren’t you, Qrow? So very young. I wouldn’t expect you to know such things.”
Ozpin came up and actually gave his cheek a pat, like some doting grandmother humoring her young charge. Qrow got a close look at his unlined face and could see how soft his hair was, with none of the wiry texture that usually accompanied gray strands. For a man who loved teasing him about his age (not nearly as young as people tended to assume), Ozpin didn’t look a day over thirty himself. It was just one more of his oddities. Qrow had stopped bothering to count them long ago.
Instead he leaned into Ozpin’s touch when his hand decided to rest on his cheek a moment, like some rare bird designing to visit. Ozpin’s fingers were cool as their pads lightly took in the texture of Qrow’s skin. He thought he saw Ozpin’s pupils dilating, blowing black against brown, though that may have just been a trick of the light.
“Is anyone gonna let me do some actual work around here?” he finally groused. A moment longer and Qrow might not have let Ozpin go.
“You should be very proud,” he said, voice carrying a touch of awe that didn’t sit right with the rest of the scene. Ozpin was looking at a bio waste bag. “You have such a wonderful job.”
Qrow stared. Then he looked down to make sure that yes, he was still a janitor and yes, those were drops of day-old coffee on his shoes. A smear of something vile-smelling on his sleeve. Everything else was disinfectant.
“I do?”
“Of course! Why, it’s a service. You keep things neat and sterile. You help make sure my family has a lovely home to keep coming back to.” Ozpin rested his hand on the tank and all the fish congregated around his reflection. Must think it was time for food or something. Qrow was used to the term ‘family’ getting thrown out when Ozpin was speaking and slimy, big-eyed fish were involved. That hardly fazed him nowadays.
The idea that someone found janitorial work impressive? That was something out of left field. Qrow could feel the blush now staining his cheeks.
“Guess I’m not the worst at it,” he muttered, taking up his bag again because damn, he couldn’t look Ozpin in the eye when he got like this. He was expecting another non-sequitor into the new book he was reading, or maybe the fact that Oscar had started collecting forks again (don’t ask). Instead Qrow felt a touch at the crook of his arm, as gentle as when Ozpin had touched his cheek. He stepped closer.
“You truly are marvelous,” Ozpin whispered.
“…Do you hear the stuff that comes out of your mouth?”
“Oh yes. Sometimes I’m the only one who hears. Except Oscar, of course…and you. You’ve always heard me, haven’t you, Qrow? Tell me, do you enjoy the music?”
Must just mean music. In general, like. Qrow suspected that Ozpin was foreign, slipping articles in where none where needed because there certainly wasn’t any music playing now.
…Right?
He wasn’t holding the trash bag anymore. It was thrown haphazardly across his cart, now replaced with Ozpin’s cool, surprisingly smooth hand. Qrow stared  down at the appendage, reeling, wondering when that had happened and why. How many times was the man going to touch him tonight—freely—when he’d kept some sort of distance all these months before?
“You do hear,” Ozpin murmured, seemingly to himself. “And Oscar is so very fond of you…why, we both are.” His contemplative look suddenly split like ripe fruit, revealing a blinding smile beneath. “Come, Qrow. Let me show you.”
“Show me what?”
Don’t ask too many questions. You’ll spoil the fun. Ozpin had said that to him once when Qrow had feigned an interest in all his nasty fish, figuring that maybe he’d have some sort of chance if there was a shared interest between them, even a faked one. Instead his words had been rebuffed, Ozpin seeming to stare through him to the lie beneath, finding it all very humorous. Qrow wasn’t surprised that his questions weren’t answered now.
Instead Ozpin led him down the long corridors of Atlas labs, their steps echoing and their breathing overly loud. The aquarium around them shifted with dark blues and greens. The fish seemed to follow, waiting.
It occurred to Qrow then that they were the only ones here. He was the late-night janitor. Ozpin was the workaholic who never seemed to sleep. The only thing that broke the isolation was Oscar’s voice drifting faintly down the hall as he sang that insistent song. Row, row, row, your boat. Where to though? They were the only ones here and suddenly that seemed as much a possibility as a threat.
Don’t forget to scream.
Qrow opened his mouth, but all that came out was a soft, devoted sigh. He stepped into the water.
…water?
“There you are,” Ozpin said. It came out as a coo. “Quite lovely, isn’t it?”
He’d taken him to one of the wading pools. Into the wading pool, where the wildlife swam free, providing the scientists with a place to get up close and personal with their research. A tiny part of Qrow’s mind expressed surprise that Ozpin had stepped in with him—he and Oscar had always had such a strange aversion to touching water, despite their love of it. Filled boots. Wet pants sticking to his ankles, now his thighs. A slightly larger part of him was sending off panicked signals, claiming that he never ever wanted to be this close to a bunch of fish. There were little guppy things scurrying about. Rays with long tails. What might have been a small shark. Everything circled around them as they moved forward, a whirlpool of all the things Qrow had wanted to avoid since taking this position.
Except for Ozpin. Qrow waded deeper, moving towards him and him alone.
“You heard, Qrow. Do you see too?”
Dumbly, Qrow stared down at their still clasped hands. There were membranes between Ozpin’s fingers now and when he smiled his teeth had grown sharper. He’d grown more.
There was a ledge where the pool connected to the tank, a space between the two worlds just large enough for the kinder animals to slip through. Or perhaps two men. One man and… Ozpin; who pulled Qrow under with a forceful, determined tug.
He’d always thought it would be boring under the water. All dark and silent. Far from it though. When Qrow first jerked in panic Ozpin was there, his tattoos, his scales bright within the pool’s gloom, casting little prisms between them. His tail pulled Qrow close while his pupils narrowed into slits. There were tender, clawed hands bowing his shoulders.
There was a moment of suspension then, poised somewhere between bobbing and swimming. Qrow caught Ozpin’s gaze and gave himself up to drowning in those eyes.
Well done, they seemed to say. A mouth filled with teeth and fierce possession leaned in for what might have been a kiss.
Qrow had always taken his chances. He met Ozpin halfway and what do you know.
He tasted salt.

The Good, The Bad and the Dirty: RWBY Vol 6 Ch 6
Congratulations to everyone in the FNDM who predicted Grandma Katara, a.k.a. María Calavera, to be a silver eyed warrior.
Today’s Grimm of the day is:
Tumblr media
Also known as The Apathy.
Overall rating of the episode: 7.5/10
The Good:
I think the writers have created the most terrifying Grimm of them all, the Apathy might be one of the most powerful creatures in this universe. This is not only because of their super OP ability of making everyone just lay down to accept death like Blake did, but also because apparently people don’t think they are as dangerous as they are. After all, a person willingly brought two of them inside his settlement to keep everybody chill.
That single frame of Blake getting ready to die was horrifying to the point where I was like “nope, nope nope, thanks.” It perfectly set the atmosphere for the scene. The overall demeanor of everyone affected by the creatures was very well done, and from the first moment Yang started acting weird; you notice how the things everyone say seem in character but exaggerated, like someone cranky who hasn’t slept.
Good job to Grandma Katara for not going to bed when something creepy was happening around them, if it wasn’t for her doing research, they would all have died. I will expand on this on The Dirty section.
Of course, one would then ask: how are our heroes going to get out fo this mess? The answer is rather obvious, and yet it makes me so happy: Ruby’s silver eyes.
The Silver Eyes power was used, and Ruby got a teacher. Hell fucking yeah!!! Fucking finally!!!! It’s been 6 volumes, but we’re finally here!!!!!! I will carry on with this on The Dirty section.
If you are still celebrating over this development, I want to draw some attention to the man that wasn’t with he kids he’s supposed to look after: Qrow. His scenes this chapter were dark, and carried a lot of weight. This is both awesome and sad.
You see, Qrow’s a raging alcoholic. We all know this, but it has, until this point, been played for laughs within the fandom. I mean, I like Snow Bird as much as the next gal, but when you realize Winter’s mother is an alcoholic, the fact that she was raised in an abusive household and you pair hair with a middle aged alcoholic, it’s kinda... weird? Don’t make me say problematic, Tumblr.
I’m not saying u shouldn’t ship Snow Bird, my point is: Qrow needs help, his alcohol addiction isn’t a quirk but an issue. That scene with Ruby shattering that wine bottle was perfect, specially when it is followed with her hugging Qrow, because she knows he’s in pain.
“You can talk to me, or Yang.”
Rubes, u and ur sister are suffering from PTSD, everyone is. (Except for Oscar, who’s dealing with a mental parasite. We don’t know enough about Maria to say she’s clear of baggage, but she’s the most level headed of the bunch.)
I just want to point out Yang grabbed Blake’s hand. #Bumbleby.
I literally said “Gay. #Bumbleby” while looking at my brother because he said Yang wasn’t paying enough attention to Blake this episode.
The Bad:
Did anyone spend more time laughing and meme-ing the shit of the episode instead of being scared?
I have the feeling that the writers wanted this episode to be super dark (which got there when Blake was like, “take me sweet child of darkness”), but at times it felt slow or not extreme enough to make us feel scared or even in danger. The tensions was not built, but rather, it felt like it was dragged on.
There was no sense of urgency, it felt like a drag, even when everyone was going to die, it felt somehow slow as fuck. It felt like we were watching this episode in x0.75 speed.
Lemme give you an example: by the end, Weiss makes the very smart decision to pick some alcohol bottles and throw them at the entry to the underground tunnels before going incendio and setting the damn cursed house on fire. Although I laughed at this, I felt like it was such a small gesture.
If the kids were as scared as they supposedly where, why didn’t Weiss start throwing more bottles at the whole place while telling Ruby to get Qrow and run away as fast as they could, only to set the whole thing on fire the proper way?
Where’s the excitement of that scene?
The last shot of the house as it burned felt so uninteresting and grey.
At times, the episode felt muted, which is so sad.
The Dirty:
Now, like I said before: I’m happy Grandma Katara proved to be the voice of reason again. However, I'm kinda baffled the way they revealed the backstory of the farm. It was kind of cliché but also poorly implemented. I guess I wished the writes could’ve turned this into a better murder mystery kind of deal. Have the characters figure out what is happening while trying to grab information from the books and stuff, instead of María opening the diary on the right page and being “oh shit” on the right time.
It’s the same issue I had the the Ozma/Salem backstory episode. It had the potential to be subtle, but the writers seem to go for the on the nose/on your face kind of exposition.
Last, but not least: I want to point out that Tai, Qrow and Ozpin/Ozma probably know stuff about the Silver Eyes power considering that Summer Rose had silver eyes. But they haven’t told Ruby anything useful other than Qrow giving her some short exposition to her at the end of Volume 3.
Maybe it’s because Ruby’s power is slightly OP? Or maybe it’s bad writing.
Overall rating of the episode: 7.5/10

here’s to love, my rose, pt.2
The best dad is back! I’m really excited for this volume and I really and hoping that Ruby gets angry at someone or breaks down in front of her team. She keeps everything in and no one is that positive 24/7, she’s gonna break sometime and I want her team to be there every step of the way like she has for them.
————————————————————————-
Tai’s heart clenched in his chest as the one tear shed was followed by one several more. Before he knew it, he was sobbing. Sobbing, because he was too late. Raven was gone. Summer was gone. Qrow blamed Summer’s death on himself...
The fact that his team had fallen apart so easily ate at his heart. It filled him with guilt and he’d do anything to rid of it. He was so tired of living in the constant reminder that he let down everyone he loved.
“Why, Raven! Why? Summer... Qrow... I’m sorry. I’m sorry I wasn’t there for you when I should have been. I should have done better,” he murmured to himself.
Why?
—————-—-—————————————————-
Ruby woke up, the filtered light coming through her windows. She was glad that for once in her life she could sleep without the reminder that she had to help save the world.
17 was supposed to be an easy time. Right now she was supposed to be in Beacon Academy, living her life with her friends, on her way to becoming the best Huntress around.
She wasn’t even sure if that was possible anymore.
She tiredly rolled out of bed and got into her slippers. Opening the door, she headed downstairs. She paused for a second when she heard loud crying.
“Why, Raven! Why? Summer... Qrow... I’m sorry. I’m sorry I wasn’t there for you when I should have been. I should have done better,” the sound of her father came.
Raven? Summer? Qrow? Why was he crying about team STRQ?
She quickly sped over the last few steps and into the dining room, where her dad was choking on his tears.
“Dad?”
Her dad froze in his place before turning to face her. He looked weary, and upset with himself. Ruby wondered what was going on.
“Dad... are you okay?” she asked him, running to his side. Tai gave a small smile and nodded. She wrapped her small arms around him, in hopes of letting him know she was there for him.
“You’re just like your mother, Ruby,” he chuckled softly.
Mother?
“How so, Dad?” Ruby asked timidly. She was curious, but afraid of going into uncharted territory. Tai never mentioned the past Summer Rose in their home. He’d only insinuate about her, but never would he bluntly talk about who she was or how they had ended up together.
“Ruby, sit down and let me tell you about when I fell for your mother.
Ruby’s eyes flickered over to the window, where a path would lead to her mother’s grave. Her heart fell heavy as she sat down in the chair next to her father’s.
Taiyang took a deep breath. He needed to be prepared. He cried about it and now it was time to do something about it.
So he told his story. He started from the beginning, fragments of what he had to go through when Raven left, and after he and Summer first kissed. Tai was cautious, but after eyeing his daughter only saw that she was quite interested and showed no signs of embarrassment nor shame.
Qrow sat down next to Tai, who was seated at the porch of their home. He had just gotten home from another mission, and was worn out. It was strange playing third wheel to Summer and Tai, but he had gotten used to it. He was used to a rambunctious toddler in the house too.
Qrow took a swig from his flask and let out an easy sigh. It had been a confusing two months. He had went to go find Raven, in hopes that she would come see her daughter, but instead he was met with bandits that would rather kill before negotiating.
He was glad Tai was getting better though. He looked happy and healthy, not like the shell he was a few months ago. Anytime anyone would mention Raven’s name he would freeze and his mind would blank. These days it was a bit better, he tended to pretend he hadn’t heard.
And Yang. She had started calling Summer, “Mama,” which had made Summer cry. Twice. Yang probably didn’t remember Raven’s face too well, and Summer was really the only “mom” she had ever known. Qrow knew she was good for her.
“Tai, how are you?” Qrow asked. He offered him his flask to which Tai shook his head. “You know I don’t drink.”
“I’m fine, Qrow. How about yourself?” Tai asked. Qrow noticed his voice had a hard edge to it and he knew why. They all knew why.
“Tai... you’ve been like this since Yang was born. Are you going to keep acting like this forever? Come on, it’s my birthday, you can’t keep frowning. Your wife and your kid want you to be happy. And... I do too, you ass,” he said quietly, punching Tai on the shoulder.
“What do you think Raven is doing today?” Tai asked, looking at the sky.
Qrow’s eyes narrowed. “Nothing good, of course. Tai... you can’t be wondering about my sister. She’s gone. Think about how Summer feels every time you get in a mood about Raven.”
Qrow was right. He couldn’t keep being sad on the Branwen twin’s birthday. Qrow and Summer were just as bummed that Raven had left as he was. He had a new family, and he couldn’t keep hurting Summer by reminiscing times with Raven.
“You’re right, Qrow. I’ll buy you a drink next time we’re out. Happy birthday, man.”
Qrow grinned and threw an arm around Tai. “That’s what I’m talking about.” He stood up stretched.
“Well, I’d love to stick around, but I have to go see Ozpin. I’ll be back tomorrow.”
Tai nodded. Qrow took off with a running start, and with a burst of black feathers, he transformed into his namesake bird. Tai waited until he was gone until he stood up and went back into the house.
“Summer?” Tai called. He didn’t hear her reply.
“Summer?”
There still was no sound. Yang, he knew was sound asleep, but where was Summer?
Tai knew how much Summer was itching to get back to her Huntress duty. Adrenaline ran through her veins and she was always on the lookout for Grimm. If she wasn’t honorary mom to Yang, she would have left by now. Tai also wished to get back to fighting, but his daughter had helped him put his mind to other things besides fighting. He figured when Yang was old enough, he could teach at Signal.
He hurried up the steps and into their bedroom, where he heard loud retching noises.
“Summer?” he cried, panicked. Tai didn’t waste a moment as he burst into the bathroom and found Summer throwing up the contents of her breakfast into the toilet. She looked paler than usual.
“Summer!”
He rushed to her side and rubbed her back, helping her get it out. After a while, she stopped and slumped against the toilet lid. Tai rushed downstairs and got her water and some stomach reliever.
Back upstairs, Summer had managed to get up, and was rinsing her mouth. Tai led her to the bed and she managed to take the pill and chug the water down.
After she was finished, she took a look at Tai.
“T-tai,” she managed.
Was she sick?
“Are you okay, Summer? Do you have a fever?” he asked, raising his hand to her head.
She shook her head. “No, I’m—“
“Stomach ache? Do we need to go to a doctor?”
“No!”
“Is it that time of the month? Do you usually throw up then? I didn’t know that happe—“
“Tai, no! Listen to me!” Summer growled, her eyes flashing. Tai had seen Summer use her silver eye power, as she could control it fairly well, but he didn’t want to be the target of that wrath. He shut up quickly and his wife sighed.
“Tai... I think I’m pregnant.”
Tai wasn’t sure at first of what he was hearing. His jaw kind of dropped and he stared at Summer. Did he hear her correctly?
“What?”
“I’m positive... we’re going to be parents. Well, you’re going to be a parent for the second time. This is my first, duh—“ Summer stopped and peered into Tai’s face. His blue eyes were blank, and he seemed to be unable to register any information.
“Tai? Are you okay?” Summer asked carefully.
Tai shook out of it. His face grew into a large smile.
“I’m going to be a father again... that’s wonderful.” He grabbed Summer’s arms and pressed a kiss to her cheek. Summer was going to be a mother. Yang would be a big sister. He smiled. Why worry about Raven? He had all he needed right there.

Let’s Talk About Qrow Branwen.
Huntsman. Uncle. Twin. And a self-titled “bad luck charm.”
I have so many feels over Qrow fucking Branwen.
Qrow’s semblance, revealed in Volume 4, is “bad luck.” Here’s what the RWBY Wiki has to say.
“Qrow's Semblance brings misfortune wherever he goes, and unlike most Semblances, his is always active and uncontrollable. This leads to incidents as small as a glass being knocked onto the floor in "New Challengers" or as significant as a blocked attack chopping off the corner of a building in "Punished". His Semblance can come to his advantage in a fight, such when Tyrian Callows falls through an old roof. His Semblance does not discriminate on who it affects, which causes him to keep his distance from the people he cares about.”
Qrow freaking Branwen.
Can you even begin to imagine what kind of hell this man must live each day?
No, you really can’t. You really, really can’t.
You probably think, “Yeah, it would suck to have constant bad luck.”
Allow me to elaborate for you.
Imagine a young Qrow, perhaps part of a happy family, crying because his sister, Raven, tripped and hurt herself while they were playing. In the weeks following, Raven is more careful when she’s playing.
Imagine a slightly older Qrow, now in school, watching his close friends get into freak accidents and sustain random injuries. His friends are in the hospital or kept home, healing, more and more often.
Imagine tween Qrow, hearing that close family members are passing away suddenly and unexpectedly. His relatives don’t visit much, they’re all grieving.
Imagine teen Qrow, finding out that his first girlfriend was in an accident and is now on life support. When Qrow goes to visit, her life support shuts down and the doctors are too late.
Imagine 17-year-old Qrow, starting his life as a Hunter at Beacon. During the relic retrieval in the forest, he makes eye contact with Raven, just as a Grimm attacks. Qrow wheels Raven onto the stage in a wheelchair when Ozpin announces Team STRQ.
Imagine Qrow, now on Team STRQ, grow more and more reserved as his teammates experience troubling accidents and strange injuries. They ask Qrow what’s wrong. He says he’s fine. He starts wondering if he’s the one causing the accidents and injuries.
Imagine Qrow, doing research with Raven, having recently discovered their ability to transform into their respective bird namesake. Qrow learns that his bird form, a crow, is a symbol of bad luck. Something begins to grow in the back of his mind as the WiFI goes out and many students doing last minute homework are unable to finish. Instead of celebrating finding his supposed semblance, Qrow is lost in dark thought.
Imagine 20-year-old Qrow, graduated from Beacon, watching Taiyang and Raven date, and seeing the small accidents that endanger their relationship whenever he hangs out with them for too long. Qrow refuses to date. Summer wants to help her teammate. Qrow say’s everything’s fine. Depression begins to set in.
Imagine Qrow, beside Taiyang, each holding one of Raven’s hands as she goes into labor in the hospital. Nearly 18 hours later, Yang is born, and Raven is in a very dangerous condition. The doctors say they’ve never seen such a healthy pregnancy go so wrong at the very end. Qrow, with his new title of Uncle, excuses himself, and goes to the nearest bar.
Imagine Qrow, tears in his eyes, as Taiyang and Raven and Summer have the biggest fight in the history of Team STRQ’s fights. Yang plays with Qrow in the living room, calling him “Uncle.” The fight is broken up by Yang screaming in pain. Qrow doesn’t know how the TV fell, but the weight in his heart tells him that it was his fault. Raven and Taiyang make sure their daughter is alright while Summer tries to speak to Qrow as he makes an excuse to leave. He ends up at another bar. The bartender is starting to recognize him.
Imagine Qrow, hiding the scent of alcohol on his breath watching TV with Team STRQ and little Yang. He sits apart from them, and the weight in his heart grows when the news report. The local bar burned to the ground, most of the employees still inside. Qrow’s depression and want for a drink only grow.
Imagine Qrow, biting back tears as the fight from a few months ago comes to a front and ends with Raven walking out, Taiyang heartbroken, Summer in tears, and Qrow trying to comfort Yang while touching her as little as possible. All of them think that it’s their fault that Raven left, but Qrow knows the true blame resides with him.
Imagine Qrow, now without his twin and best friend. Summer and Taiyang find out about his growing reliance on alcohol, and they do their best to help him. He finally tells someone what he’s been feeling for so many years. He’s a bringer of bad luck. Summer and Tai are trying to reassure him as the power goes out, and Yang cries for hours. Qrow wishes for a drink and answers.
Imagine Qrow, as he goes on long hunting trips, and on one return discovers Taiyang and Summer have begun a relationship. He hesitantly agrees to be the best man at the wedding. Raven doesn’t show up, despite Summer reaching out to ask her to be the maid of honour. Several small mishaps occur at the wedding, but Qrow makes it through without a single drop of alcohol. Maybe, just maybe, things are looking up. Maybe the hunting helps.
Imagine Qrow, hunting more and more, rushing back when he hears the news. He arrives a few minutes after Ruby Rose is born, beaming as he hears the pregnancy was quick and easy. No repeats of last time. Yang holds Ruby, already strong enough, and asks with wide lilac eyes if “Uncle Qrow” wants a turn. He can’t refuse, and takes the small bundle, wrapped in a red blanket. Qrow feels the weight in his heart, knows he should hand Ruby off before anything happens, but he doesn’t want to let the little bundle go. In several nearby rooms, doctors rush to save patients who are flatlining for no reason.
Imagine Qrow, uncle of two beautiful girls, turning down babysitting in favor of hunting. He notices a pattern as he kills Grimm after Grimm after Grimm. He finds them fighting each other, already wounded, and sleeping. During fights, Grimm stumble on thin air, wound fellow beasts, miss openings for attacks. Qrow uses his bird form more and more, but the question of his semblance hangs in the balance. Where does the bad luck come from, and why? When there’s no Grimm around to fight and Qrow is alone, the weather is always terrible.
Imagine Qrow, unable to do anything but drink after Summer dies. Taiyang would join him, but his two girls need him. Ruby and Yang ask for their uncle, but Qrow doesn’t want to be around anyone he cares about. It’s too risky. A car accident kills several people outside the bar. Qrow drinks into oblivion.
Imagine Qrow, still ridden with grief, helping Tai bury Summer. Raven doesn’t show up. Yang gets expelled from school for fighting. Ruby gets bullied after Yang is gone. Qrow drinks. Tai tries to cope. The bad luck continues.
Imagine Qrow, finally cracking under so much pressure. He goes to talk to Ozpin at Beacon, something Summer suggested several years ago. Ozpin has answers. Qrow’s semblance isn’t his bird form. Ozpin calls him “a strange case.” His semblance is always active, and it cannot be controlled. Qrow breaks down right there in Ozpin’s office. Ozpin offers to help, staring down at the remains of his favourite coffee mug.
Imagine Qrow, struggling to stay sober, teaching his first class at Signal, thanks to Ozpin’s good word. He’s every student’s favourite teacher. His classes are practical and hands on, and the students are heavily independent, since Qrow distances himself from nearly everyone. It gets harder once Ruby joins Yang at signal. The accidents stay at a minimum. Qrow feels like maybe he’s figuring this out.
Imagine Qrow, helping Ruby put the finishing touches on Crescent Rose. Ruby has already cut and bruised herself several times during the construction, but Qrow fears Ruby’s adoration and idolization more than the injuries. He needs to distance himself. He helps Yang with her motorcycle once she gets her permit. He really needs to distance himself, but he enjoys spending time with the girls. Ruby goes to the hospital when a dust cartridge explodes in Crescent Rose and Yang ends up in the bed next to her after getting in an accident on her first spin. Qrow swears never to be so selfish again. They could have died. Everything was his fault. Depression and alcoholism return. He quits at Signal, to the dismay of everyone.
Imagine Qrow, putting all of his time into hunting, honing his skills. His semblance is uncontrollable. The Grimm, attracted by the stench of negative emotion rolling off of the single Huntsman, soon discover this. He hunts several species of Grimm to near extinction in parts of Remnant. Taiyang sends the occasional update. Qrows notices that everything seems to be going smoothly, and that gives him a dark sense of satisfaction.
Imagine Qrow, in very recent events, hearing a glass shatter after being knocked over, getting Winter Schnee caught acting out line, and playing video games that the girls lose, despite having more experience. Small things. Nothing too big. He’ll take off soon and the bad luck will fade.
Now, remember. Qrow, watching Ironwood deal with prosthetic malfunctions, hearing reports of Amber getting worse. Hearing the news that Yang is disqualified. That Penny Polendina is dead. Grimm are attacking. The Fall Maiden’s powers are in the hands of the enemy. Amber, Penny, and Pyrrha Nikos are dead. Ironwood’s army is destroyed. The Grimm dragon is awake, but quickly frozen by Ruby’s silver eye powers. Ruby is in a coma. Yang is dragged to safety, bleeding to death, missing an arm. Her teammate is also badly wounded. Qrow watches Team RWBY get torn apart as Weiss Schnee is taken home by her father, Taiyang arrives to take Ruby and Yang, and Blake runs away. Ozpin is dead.
Qrow drowning in the belief that everything was his fault.
Remember Qrow following Team RNJR, keeping several miles between them, the horrifying memories of everything so fresh. He knows he can keep Ruby safe from a distance. But Tyrian attacks, and he’s nearly too late. He’s not exempt from his semblance. Far from it. Wounded. Too close to Team RNJR for their own good. Having to take more of their innocence and carefree lives by explaining what was happening. The quiet shame he hides as he reveals his semblance, not meeting Ruby’s eyes for fear that she will see him as a monster. Poison setting in. Unable to protect Ruby and her friends. Unconscious, but still causing bad luck.
Understand Qrow. Despite the terrible things his bad luck does to those around him, the bad luck affects him worst of all. Because he knows. He knows that it’s his semblance, and he believes that it’s all his fault. And he can’t do anything to stop it.
Imagine Qrow fucking Branwen.

The Hero’s Road
Warning: Definitely has spoilers up to Volume 6, Episode 4
Rating: K
Word Count: 3.5k
Ao3 Link: The Hero’s Road
Summary: Though every reincarnation was new, their role was always the same. This time around, Ozpin was set to be the guide, Oscar the driving force and, as always, Ozma was the spirit.
Things just… weren’t exactly going as planned right now. [Set sometime after Volume 6, Episode 4]
Notes:  So this is completely dedicated to @undeadwicchan who’s post here inspired me to do a character study on the three Oz’s (Ozma, Oscar and Ozpin). Beyond briefly utilizing the idea of Ozma coming to the rescue for Oscar, it doesn’t actually have much to do with the framework of the post itself - which, all the kudos to you for such a kickass headcanon; it would be seriously awesome to see executed in true canon. Nevertheless, with this volume making me all sorts of fond for the precious trio, this was just the jolt I needed to get writing something of my own!
~
It had been a long time since Ozma had been required to surface to the full forefront of control.
But Oscar, young and inexperienced as he was, could not handle the swarm that overtook Brunswick Farms. Roused by the cries for help, he swiftly took the reigns and joined the fight alongside team RWBY and Qrow. Yet, hindered without Ozpin’s melee experience, he relied entirely on his magic to combat the force – tipping them all off that he was neither of the two they had come to expect to see.
As soon as the last Grimm faded, they turned on him, as he expected they would.
“What are you doing here?” Sir Branwen’s voice was as sharp as his weapon. Unlike his kin, fear did not shake him; he stood taller in the face of adversary. Were the man a true bird, one might believe such a valiant personality would go up against even an eagle. It was a quality that was hard not to admire.
But when faced with it in opposition, even dug deep in their mind as he was, he could feel the pang from Ozpin’s heart. He fathomed that no matter how many times he was reborn, there would always be those select few that their desertion would strike hard enough to unbalance them. It was just unfortunate that those around them often forgot the fact they were still entirely human themselves.
“Do you know how many lifetimes I have led?” Ozma questioned. He turned to face them, their combined ire doing nothing to weigh him. “Ninety-three. The ninety first and second were the closest we’ve ever gotten to unifying humanity. A hundred years to end a war and bring about comradeship among our kingdoms. To create technology and advancements the world had never seen before. To build the schools and raise a defense force for the many less-abled.” He stepped forward, his voice rising with his righteous fury, “And one night was all it took to see so much of that undone. One night for irreparable damage to be done.” He looked to Lady Xiao Long as he said this, watching as her gaze averted. He turned to Lady Belladonna and Lady Schnee next, “For fear and uncertainty to halt us.” Finally, to Lady Rose and Sir Branwen, “Or for those to be lost that could never be returned.”
The snow crunched underfoot as Qrow challenged him, “That’s not-”
“One mere hour for you all to lose your confidence.” He swept his cane in indication of them, stalling it to point to the man. When only silence reigned, Ozma placed it down, crossing his hands over the top. “I am not naïve to what the power of destruction can do. It is in it that has my former love so lost.” He shut his eyes, briefly seeking the one locked away; but Ozpin still was not ready to give up the key. “It is in that, I find myself lost as well.”
“Then how can you ask us to fight an enemy we can’t beat?!” Yang snapped, her fire refueled. Another quality that was easy to admire, but when misdirected, became her greatest obstacle.
“Then I will not.” He replied simply. “I instead ask you to fight for what is right. Every moment we delay is a chance for Salem to continue her advance. Atlas and Shade are no doubt her next targets. Every life we can save by merely intervening is worth it. However, whether you stand by me for that end or not is only a choice you can make.” He walked past them, heading back for the farmhouse they had come to make their own.
“Where are you going?” Asked Lady Schnee.
“To lie down. I used a tad too much magic. Oscar will need time to recover.” He paused, glancing over his shoulder. “And he, like all of you, needs time to consider what he truly wishes to do.” He continued onward.
What I wish to do? Oscar repeated faintly.
Did you truly not believe you had a choice? He thought back.
Silence was his only answer.
Ozma quickened his step just so. It seems he had more work to do.
~
When Oscar awoke, he was neither on the couch he had laid down on nor in the farmhouse at all. Above him were the branches of trees, sunlight streaming through and dappling along the ground, confusing him with their lack of snow and cold. As he sat up, it was with a start he realized he was not alone.
Ozma sat on the ground a few feet from him. He may have been meditating but at the sound of movement, his eyes opened. “Ah, it was much easier to call you here than I feared.”
“What’s going on? Where are we?” Oscar demanded. Things were already weird enough in his head; if he found out he had some crazy super ability to astral project, he was done.
“Calm, young one.” Ozma replied, raising a hand. “You are still asleep. This is merely a mental space in which we can talk. As for where we are…” He looked about. “You’ll have to tell me. It is your psyche after all.”
He looked around, realizing the other man was right. He did know this place. “It’s one of the forest trails that leads back to my farm.” It was the same one he’d taken to leave.
There was a rattle of armor as the other stood. “Then perhaps we can take a walk together. I’d enjoy to see it.”
Yeah right. Still, Oscar allowed himself to be helped up, doing his best to keep up with him as they walked down the dirt path. As they did, he could not help but sneak glances at the man. He truly appeared as if he were someone who stepped right out of a fairytale, with armor meant for a knight and a cape befitting a superhero. Even his body language seemed strong, with his shoulders and head high, his stride long so that it forced Oscar to take two steps to his every one. How could he walk with such confidence when everything in his life had gone so wrong?
Ozma caught him staring and smiled at him. “Are you alright?”
“Y-Yea!” Oscar looked down, his face heating. “What did you want to talk to me about?”
“Whatever you would like. I’m sure you have a lot on your mind.”
He thought of asking the one he’d just thought, but quickly shook it aside. He went for something safer instead. “Why do you want to see my dingy old farm? I’m sure it’s nothing nearly as amazing as the stuff you’ve seen.”
Ozma chuckled. “You know, I always loved adventuring. It was what made me decide to set off from home. I wanted to see the world. Experience everything to its fullest.” He waved his hands outwards, encapsulating a sight Oscar could not see. “My travels brought me to so many places. Grand castles. Beautiful canyons. Stunning oceans. And yes, even ‘dingy’ old farms.”
“And you left, as easy as that.” He shook his head. Figures.
“I never said it was easy. My father was furious. Every night he told me I was throwing my life away. And my mother cried and cried.” Ozma looked away and though his smile stayed, there was something sorrowful there. “I don’t think I could have ever disappointed them more.”
Like a Grimm to a mourner, he couldn’t help but wonder what his own parents would have said, had they still been around. He felt something settle against his gut uncomfortably. A weight he hadn’t felt in years, but its presence was as agonizing as ever. He ran a hand over his face, trying to act like he was brushing away an itch and not the burn in his eyes. “So why did you do it?”
“It was all I wanted. I didn’t want to live with the regret I hadn’t tried.” Ozma placed his hand over his heart. “It just felt right.”
His feet stopped, the sentence striking a painfully familiar chord in him and words spilled out before Oscar could help it, “Is that why I felt that way when I left? Was it you!?” So many emotions were filling him he didn’t know where one began and another ended, but anger seemed to take the helm, raising in a great tidal wave inside of him. “Huh?! Was it?! How many other things haven’t been me?! What else is just you or him or, or someone else!!”
Ozma reached for him, “Oscar-”
“No!” He smacked the hand away, stumbling backwards. “When I was younger, I used to dream about it, you know? Setting out on my own big adventure. Becoming a hero like the ones we saw on TV. I thought that was what I wanted.” He looked away, his fists so tight at his side they shook. “But now I get it. I never had it in me to leave. It’s… it’s always just been you, hasn’t it? And that’s what it’s going to be like, isn’t it?!” He bowed his head, fighting down tears but not the other’s approach this time, or the hands that laid on his shoulders. He let his head thunk against the metal breastplate. “I didn’t even get a choice! It’s not fair!” Metal rang as he slammed his fist against the other’s chest. “It’s not fair!!”
The arms that encircled him tightened. “Yeah, you’re right. It’s not.”
He hit him again, strength waning. By the third strike it was barely more than a weak knock. He slumped against him. “I’m just going to disappear, aren’t I?”
“Of course not.” Ozma’s voice was soft, almost fatherly in a way he’d almost forgotten, as he spoke against his hair. “If Ozpin nor I have disappeared, why would you?”
Oscar snuffled, tilting his head up, “But Qrow, he said…”
“An injured heart will say much in an effort to ease its own pain.” He stepped back, just enough to look at him properly. “I will not lie and say that the lines do not blur at times, but there will always be a distinctive you in here and your input is always as important as ours. And you will always have the right to choose.”
“What about at Haven?” He bit back.
Ozma laughed softly. “The same can be said about Jinn.”
His eyes widened. “I- That was- I was just-”
There was a shake of his head and a hand on his shoulder once more as the man lent down to his eye-level. “I apologize, it was not an accusation. Merely an observation. None of us have been very fair to each other. But while the past can’t be undone, we can change moving forward. If this coexistence is to work, that is.”
“So what if I said I wanted to go back home?” He challenged.
He expected him to blanch or backtrack. But Ozma only smiled and said, “Then I’ll help you buy the train ticket this time.” The hand on his shoulder squeezed; a reassuring touch. “Is that what you want?”
Oscar looked away, wiping away tears. “No. I dunno. Maybe.”
He rose. “What is it that makes you uncertain?”
A sigh heaved from deep in his chest, focusing on the dirt between their shoes. “I’m… not like you guys. I’m no knight running out to save damsels from towers. Or some wise professor who can motivate a whole school of people to be these great fighters.” He laughed bitterly as he threw up his hands. “I couldn’t even get that guy to shut off those stupid turrets! I’m not particularly smart or skilled,” Finally, he looked up at other. “Or brave.”
An eyebrow rose like a startled exclamation. “Are those the things that you believe a hero to be?”
“Of course they are!” When Ozma’s expression did not change though, Oscar felt uncertain suddenly. “…Aren’t they?”
He hummed thoughtfully as he waved to the trail before them. As Oscar took his place beside him again, he was given his answer, “They are good qualities, certainly. But one can be skilled, yet never use them to assist others. One can be smart, but remain uncaring to other’s plights. One can be brave, but recklessly so.”
“So then, what does make a hero?” He asked.
Ozma’s eyes glittered merrily. “What is it about Lady Rose that impresses you so?”
Ruby? “Well she’s… amazing.” He thought back on the train, how easily she got Dudley to listen to her when he couldn’t. How she commanded her team to focus. How even now her words to him back at the house at Haven still inspired him. “She can motivate others.”
“What do you think it is about her that gives her that ability?”
As he tried to think it over, he found he couldn’t pin down something tangible. It just seemed to be something that was inherently there. A piece of her that made people want to stand beside her. Something in the way she viewed the world, with such a bright and kind spirit, that made others want to do the same.
… Oh. “Her heart.” He said finally.
“Yes.” Ozma nodded. “A good, strong heart is first thing a true hero needs.”
Oscar placed a hand over his own. Did he have that?
“If I may be bold,” He added, tone amused. “I do think it is also worth saying that I do not often witness fourteen-year-olds rushing across the top of speeding trains. I believe what you lack is not any of the things you think you do, but merely your own self-belief.”
“What do you mean?”
“To have faith in others, first you must find it in yourself. Though, I will admit, in the face of failure, it can be one of the hardest things to hold onto.” As they reached towards the end of the trail, the world grew dark and grey as storm clouds hovered overhead, blocking out the sun. Ozma’s expression seemed to do the same as looked into the distance. “No matter how strong they are.”
Oscar stared as well, discovering that they had not entered the plains that would lead to the farm, but a courtyard leading to a school he had never seen in person, but recognized as if it were his own home. “Beacon.”
“How curious. I did say before this was your psyche we were traveling in. So why do you think it brought us here?” Ozma quipped.
He gazed upwards slowly, to the office he had once been able to mentally photograph perfectly, and knew exactly who was hiding within it.
Oscar squared his shoulders and held his head high just like his companion.  “I think it’s telling me it’s my turn to rescue someone from a tower.”
He walked forward.
~
A quiet, familiar ding roused Ozpin from his stupor. He lifted his head from his arms, finding it as heavy as the rest of him felt. He could hear the gears around him turning, and realized where he was. Asleep in his office again? Then no doubt it was Glynda coming to chastise him. He reached for his glasses, slipping them on to at least appear more presentable – and with it his hazy vision cleared, startling him when instead of his dear assistant, it was two familiar gentlemen approaching.
Right.
He was dead.
(How was Glynda doing? And… how long would it be until the truth got to her? What would she think of him then?)
“Ah, time for The Walk?” Ozpin asked, willing himself not to sink back to sleep.
“Wait. This is a thing?” Oscar asked.
Though he couldn’t muster a laugh, he could not help but be lightened by the boy’s simple innocence. He was going to go on to be a great reincarnation.
“It’s a practice I sometimes perform once my new host learns the full truth. I find it helps to uplift the spirit.” Ozma replies. “Though, it’s usually not this soon.”
Oscar turned to him. “I learned sooner than you?”
Ozpin crossed his hands, smiling to the boy. “Four years, to be exact. I was also twice your age.” He focused on one of the larger cogs underneath the glass surface if the desk, watching it turn. “I’m embarrassed to admit I purchased a one-way ticket to Vacuo that same day.”
“…What made you stay?”
What indeed. “As luck would have it, whether it be good or bad, a rather… problematic student was sent to my office that day. If I recall, this time around he had intentionally set the dust lab on fire.” Though, it could have also been the time he clogged the drain of the courtyard fountain. The record had become quite extensive. “Most of the other facility believed him to simply be a destructive sort. But I suspected different. Yet no matter how many times he was sent to my office, no matter how many conversations we had, I couldn’t get him to speak a word. He would just ask for his punishment in his crude way, pay it, and be back in a week.”
Ozpin rose to his feet, heading to his window that overlooked his former school. “That day though, on what I thought would be my last, I took a chance and acted on my suspicions.” His eyes darted to Oscar’s reflection as the boy approached. “You see, Beacon was always a school designed to have a low entry requirement. It was a school meant to train the best of the kingdom, but also be a shelter many could seek refuge in. Quite a few enrolled were those thrown from their own homes. So, I questioned him if that was what had happened to him and I learned more than I thought he would offer.”
He shut his eyes, still able to picture so clearly the seventeen-year-old Qrow that had eventually dissolved into tears, angry and pained by a world that didn’t want him and so full of hate at himself for a semblance he could not help. It seemed to be an impossible problem. Fortunately, Ozpin knew a bit about those. It was surprising to realize just how much of a difference a little empathy could go to heal a hurt soul.
“I did not stay that day for the war. I stayed because he helped remind me why being a professor could be so rewarding. I enjoyed having a part in my students’ lives, to help guide them into finding better ones.” He sighed. “I realize now that I’ve repaid him rather poorly for that.”
“So then, how are you repaying him any better by hiding away here?”
Ozpin turned to the boy, unsure if he was more surprised by his gall or his bull-headed honesty. In the background, Ozma started to chuckle.
“I did not lie before. I – we – do not know where to go from here.” And after so many lifetimes trying, maybe it was time to admit they just weren’t cut out for the task.
But it was Oscar, despite how he often quivered in the face of Grimm, who nodded and said. “Yeah, I know. And that’s scary.” He shifted on his feet, admitting softly, “But it’s even scarier facing it alone.”
That, more than anything, snapped him into wakefulness. You are meant to be guiding him Oz. What are you doing?
He placed a hand on his shoulder, knowing how much weight it was already carrying and much, much too much for one so young. “I’m so sorry, Oscar.”
“I am sorry too.” Ozma finally spoke, crossing over to them. “To both of you; that you must bear the burden of my mistakes as if they are your own.” He looked to each of them. “But if it is something we must bear together, then let us bear it equally, as we too should be.”
Oscar’s eyebrow rose in confusion, looking towards him for help. “Uhh…?”
He smiled. “He means that I need to stop treating you like a child."
“Oh.” He replied, seeming to take that newfound growth in. Whatever conclusion he came to made him nod once more, before he spoke again, “I’m sorry to both of you as well. I thought I was doing something right, with Jinn. I thought I was helping but all it did was end up hurting everyone.”
“You are certainly not the only one.” Ozpin agreed. The more he let those words sink in, the more he realized he was not the only one who needed to hear them. “Oscar?”
“Yes?”
“When we awaken, there’s someone I’ll need to speak with.”
The boy frowned. “Okay. But if he punches us again, I’m hitting him with the cane.”
Ozpin finally found it in him to laugh again.

Rose Garden (Ruby X Oscar): Never Alone
Rated A for Angst. _______________________________________
A lot of things were fading away around him. The corpses of the grim they had slain now faded into black clouds like ash, the light of the sun from beyond the horizon now faded as cold colors seeped into previously warm ones, even the edges of his vision blurred just the slightest bit from the exhaustion of the fight. Oscar saw many things fade in front of him, but he felt only one.
“Oscar…” his head rose slowly, as Ozpin addressed him. He had grown so used to his presence within the caverns of his mind. For months acting as a voice of reason, direction, but most importantly a teacher. The two, despite the unfortunate circumstances of how they met and why, formed something of a close comradery. Much like a student to his pupil, or even, dare he say, a parent to their child. Their bond was closer than something Oscar could ever explain, but as of right now, he could feel it…
“You’ve done so well, Oscar…”
…He could feel it fading away.
“I’m afraid, we’ve run out of time…”
“What are you…?” Oscar tried speaking to the old soul, not even attempting to refrain from speaking out loud as a twinge of panic grabbed at his chest.
“I want you to know that I never had any doubts in your abilities. I knew you would do wonders, and I can certainly say you did not disappoint.”
“What are you talking about?”
“My only regret is that I didn’t stick around long enough to see what else you would achieve.”
“Stop talking.” Oscar attempted to address him, sternly as if scolding Ozpin much like he had him in the past. But the old voice continued, as if Oscars words fell on deaf ears.
“The challenges you and the others are about to face, they will most certainly be challenges greater than anything you’ve faced before. There will be times you may feel lost, or confused, even hopeless. But I know whatever choices or actions you make, they will be the right ones.”
He could feel him slipping away, like his head became lighter and lighter by the second.
“Ozpin, don’t!”
“It’s okay, Oscar.” The boy fell silent “My memories are yours now. As is your fate.” Ozpin’s voice grew duller and duller. “I’m proud of you Oscar… good luck…”
All at once, a sudden peace fell over Oscar’s trembling form. His pounding headache from before ceased, his muscles relaxed, a sudden flood of memories and emotions surging through him. It almost pained him, if only for a split second before seeping into the depths of him. He felt different, but he hardly cared. His mind felt cleared, and it terrified him.
“Ozpin…?” There was nothing. Only silence surrounded the boy, the wind being the only kind thing to reply. “Ozpin?!” His voice echoed in the openness. “Knock it off! This isn’t funny!” A beowulf’s final growl escaped its lips as the remainder of its form faded into smoke. “You can’t leave! Not yet! Please!” The fluttering of a bird’s wings passed over the silence, but nothing remained.
Ren and Nora were the first to find Oscar, and could faintly be heard calling the others over to them, but Oscar paid them not mind.
“OZPIN!” his throat grinded as he screamed but he didn’t care. “You need to stay! I don’t know what I’m doing! You’re the only reason I got this far what am I supposed to do if you’re not there to help me?! Please say something! Anything! I don’t know what to do! SAY SOMETHING!”
. . .
It was strange, he had recalled feeling this way before. A thousand lifetimes worth of loss and sadness repeated over and over though generations that weren’t his. He knew this pain, yet he didn’t, it was something he felt all too often, yet nothing like he had ever experienced before. He couldn’t help but weep. And the fact that his sobs were the only thing he heard, the only thing he felt only pained him more.
_______________________________________
Jaune and Ren took turns carrying the boy, his form completely and utterly exhausted. The team worried for him, with even more following suit when they met up with their comrades from team RWBY. Oscar took comfort in the friends around him, as they regrouped in the nearest town, planning their next advancement.
Ren was the first to ask what had happened to Oscar during the fight, and the boy was careful with his words so as to not choke on them as he explained. He began curling in on himself, as everyone’s faces turned to him with a look of grievance, and something that resembled pity. He noticed her face didn’t seem that way though, that she didn’t look at him with pity… It soothed him for a moment, but only a moment.
Their mentor was officially gone for good… and it left a feeling of dread and uncertainty in each of their stomachs.
When the teams retired to their rooms, Oscar dreaded the thought of rest. In the darkness of his small room, he felt like he walked in an abyss. He tried to sleep, he tried to rest, tossing and turning and scuffling his bedsheets, but the quiet was surprisingly suppressing. For months he had grown used to Ozpin’s presence, knowing that whatever the unknown held for him the next day or just around the corner, he would be there to explain, to offer solutions. Perhaps the old man was something of a crutch, it certainly didn’t change the fact that he felt lost and utterly alone without him there.
He got up, and wandered the halls of the inn like a ghost. He hadn’t bothered to put on his boots, so the floors barely creaked as he paced back and forth from one end of the hall to the other. The numbers on the doors counted up and down with every which way he walked, small slivers of light just barely seeping into the dark hall from the rooms behind mahogany doors.
He found himself standing in front of her door, he knew she was awake because the light from inside shined through the hinges. He hesitated, wondering how intrusive his actions may come across. He had made many friends on his journey, but of all of them she was always the one who saw him for who he was. She always saw him as Oscar Pine, not Ozpin, not Ozpin’s successor, not the chosen one, or wizard, or whatever title had been passed down to him through his many past lives, just Oscar.
He ran his tan fingers through his messy black hair before knocking on the door, loudly enough to insist urgency, but quiet enough to not wake up any neighboring guests. He heard soft footsteps from inside inching closer and closer to him, followed by the quick click of the door’s handle as warm lamp light washed over Oscars form. Her silver eyes met his, her expression knowing.
“Hey, Oscar.” She greeted quietly.
“Hey, Ruby.” He responded, even more quiet than her greeting had been. Ruby recalled first meeting Oscar, his very being was much more reserved back then. Looking at him now, ‘reserved’ didn’t even do justice just how withdrawn and scared he seemed. After seeing how much he had grown but a few days prior, she hated seeing her friend like this.
“How are you doing?” She felt she knew the answer, but asked regardless.
“I’m not okay.” The matter of fact tone to his answer was enough to make her chest tighten, and his averted gaze down to the floor even more so. “For months, I had been living with the voice of an old man in my head. Telling me what I was supposed to do, expect, and who I was supposed to be. I hated it at first, but at the same time he was the only one who made sense of everything happening around me. These memories, these abilities, he always said they were meant to be mine… but deep down I always felt like they weren’t. Even now I have thousands of years of knowledge and memories stirring inside me and I have nothing to make any sense of it! Or anyone!” His voice began to crack, Ruby gripping the door frame unsure if whether she should take hold of him or not. “He always said ‘this is how things were meant to be’… So why do I feel like a piece of me is missing if this is what being whole is like?”
“… Oscar, what do you need?”
“I just…” He finally looked up to her, his eyes reflecting an emotion that could only be described as desperation. “I really don’t want to be alone tonight.”
Ruby nodded, she may not have understood his predicament completely, but she did know what loss felt like, and isolation was never a good thing to pair with it. She gently took Oscars hand and lead him into the room, the door closing behind them.
She sat herself down on the bed, Oscar sitting beside her. Ruby hadn’t even adjusted the pillows for two before she noticed the boy’s shoulders shaking rapidly. She lifted his hunched form, revealing the fresh stream of tears staining his cheeks.
“I-I’m sorry…” his words hiccupped. “This must look so pathetic…”
“Oscar…” Ruby pulled the boy closer to her, until his head rested in the crook of her neck. “It’s okay.”
Another wave of tears leaked through his shut eyes, his breaths growing shallow and hitched. Oscar clung to Ruby, crying into her shoulder as she stroked his hair and rocked both of them back and forth. She recalled being held like this by her mother, and sometimes Yang on rare occasion, it felt somewhat strange to be the one doing it for once. But if she was being honest with herself, for Oscar, she would have done anything to ease his pain.
“I’m terrified Ruby…” he mumbled into her shoulder “I don’t want to be alone.” He suddenly felt her chuckle a bit as she massaged his scalp.
“Oscar, you’re so silly you know that?”
“What do you-?”
“You’ve never been alone.” The girl’s forehead rested on top of Oscar’s, providing a new type of closeness as she soothed him. “Even while Ozpin was still with you, you always had friends willing to help you. Uncle Qrow trained you, Jaune, Nora, Ren, your team befriended you. We met…” Both took notice of the emphasis she spoke with on ‘we.’ “And not just because you’re Ozpin’s successor or whatever, but because of you. Oscar Pine. One of the bravest dudes I’ve ever met. I may not know the full story, but I feel like Ozpin knew you’d be okay, because if you ever feel lost and afraid, you’ll have us to fall back on. Do you understand?”
Oscar slowly looked up, his eyes still damp and glossy, but his expression had shifted. He no longer looked up to her with sadness, in fact Ruby wasn’t certain what his expression actually was. She just knew it bored into her, making her feel like she’d melt under its gaze
“How… are you always like this?” he asked, almost whispering it.
“Like what?”
“Just… perfect in every way.” Ruby felt her heart skip a beat, the smallest sense of elation spreading through her. Her face must have reflected it as she watched Oscar’s shift to a shyer half smile.
Neither of them is sure who leaned in first, just the sudden recognition of their breath on each other’s lips was all they recalled before gently kissing one another. Before closing her eyes completely Ruby could have sworn she saw one last tear roll out from the corner of Oscar’s eye.
Oscar snatched either side of Ruby’s face, deepening the kiss in a mixture of passion and longing for closeness. Both of Ruby’s hands took hold on Oscar’s neck, pulling and keeping him closer, rubbing at the nap below his hairline. Her touch was like hot iron on ice, melting him. His scent reminded her of pine trees and open fields, hers filled Oscar’s senses with the scent of dust powder and roses. She admitted feeling his desperation. Despite the multitude of kisses being perfectly plentiful and feverish, each felt more like a small cry for help than a gesture of passion. Like he had clung himself to a precious thing he was terrified of losing. It was flattering to say the least, and Ruby was more than willing to be there for him.
The two stayed that way for a while, a few stray tears streaking down Oscars face every so often. Ruby would break away to wipe them away with her thumb or kiss the streaks left behind. They took comfort in the taste of one another, leaving previous doubts and worries to the wind. Ruby’s hands glided up to Oscar’s shoulders, and could feel the tension loosening. The feverish kissing from before slowing into smaller pecks. Ruby pulled the two of them down until both rested on their sides on the bed.
“I assume you don’t really wanna head back yet, do you?” The boy only hummed in response, shaking his head ever so slightly. The ebony haired girl pulled a large throw blanket over the two, scooching over so that her bedmate may have more room.
Oscar immediately wrapped his arms around Ruby’s waist, holding her like a child’s first bear. Ruby sighed contently, resting her head now in the crook of Oscars neck. She could feel sleep gripping at her consciousness as her hand rubbed circles on his back, making him let out a calmer but still a bit of a shaky breath.
“I love you, Ruby…”
She was certain he could feel her heartbeat accelerate through her chest as his grip around her tightened a bit. She couldn’t help but smile like a dope, and had she’d been more awake, she might had tried to conceal it. She kissed his chin before replying.
“And I love you, Oscar Pine.”
Oscar had gone to sleep afraid of the inevitable bombardment of nightmares he was sure he’d receive, but in her hold, he felt safe, and gentle rest soon followed.
