Danmei and Baihe C Novels and Manhua Officially Licensed in English

Things are getting licensed fast enough that keeping a list like this up-to-date is basically impossible, but I saw someone asking in the tags so I figured I'd try. All titles are danmei unless otherwise noted (very little baihe is licensed so far). I've included Chinese titles, but sometimes publishers change the original titles so much that I can't track them down, apologies. I've hit the link limit on this post so I've had to remove NovelUpdate links, but they're still in the version of this post on Wordpress. Note that Taiwanese titles are not included on this list.

This is everything I know of as of December 11, 2024. There might be more. I tried. Resources used to compile this list: Danmeinews.com; this Carrd, last updated in March 2023; this other carrd last updated October 23 2024; list of danmei with official licenses on NovelUpdates; a similar list on Goodreads; danmei-specific list on Reddit that to my eye looks accurate for the larger publishers but isn't thorough for some of the smaller ones.

Seven Seas:

The full list of danmei novels licensed by Seven Seas is here. The full list of danmei manhua licensed by Seven Seas is here.

These titles are in various stages of publication, from "entire series released" to "license literally announced less than a week ago." As far as I know, all Seven Seas titles are available world-wide, through major distributors and libraries, and in e-book and print formats. Seven Seas translation quality varies but the editing is general strong and the editions are sturdy and nice. Note that Seven Seas isn't without controversy, especially for treating their contractors poorly resulting in them unionizing. Some people have also been unhappy with the fidelity of their translations compared to the original Chinese (I've been satisfied personally but ymmv).

Rosmei:

Rosmei licenses are Singapore distribution rights only. There is a list of international partners organizing group orders here. I've personally placed my orders through Yiggybean, as discussed in reply to this ask. Most of these titles are only being released as print editions, tho titles that weren't originally on JJWXC (of which there are several here) WILL have e-book editions. My first book from Rosmei arrived, and I found the translation and editing to be very strong. I can't speak to how accurate it may be to the Chinese original, but it read smoothly and had very few errors. Overall, though they've made some mistakes, they've been communicative and responsive.

Via Lactea titles are primarily for sale through their website and through some distributors, such as Amazon.com. All titles are either print-only or e-book + print. Only a handful have actually been released, the rest are licensed and presumably in progress. I've now read three titles published by Via Lactea and while the translations are decent I could wish the editing was more consistent. Everything reads as if it would have been improved by one more thorough proof read.

Wang Chuan Feng Hua Lu (忘川风华录) Masterpost

Wang Chuan Feng Hua Lu (忘川风华录) is a Vocal synth (Vocaloid and SynthV) music project. It consists of songs themed around different figures throughout Chinese history. The project is a collaboration between different artists and creatives, with music and videos featuring prominent traditional Chinese elements. The project's title translates to "The Records of Magnificence of the Wangchuan" - In Chinese mythology, "Wangchuan" (or River of Forgetting) is a river in the Underworld that can rid one of their past life's memories, similar to the river Lethe.

A mobile game adaptation has also been developed by NetEast. Unfortunately, I haven't played it so I can't give much insight on it. However, I assume that its premise is similar to that of the idea behind the project as a whole: all these historical figures meeting each other in the Underworld after they died. Maybe.

Which major characters were created just for the novel and later became worshipped?

Well considering that most of the cast is already full of deities that are worshiped in other Taoism, Buddism, or Chinese folklore I can't really say that the novel created any new characters considering that Wu Cheng'en was taking these already popular stories and legends and just fitting them in a consumable narrative for the public to enjoy.

So short story.... none?

Long story...

I'll say this, I'm not sure if the publication of Wu Cheng'en's version of Xiyouji was the catalyst for making deities like Sun Wukong or Zhu Bajie more well-known or if they were already set practices around that time and place and that the novel created a more 'canon' lore to follow. That sounds more like a historical question if anything that should be looked into like... academic articles would best answer when it comes to early Chinese religious practices.

I know that Sun Wukong was already worshiped before the publication, though I am not sure how widespread the practice was. There are shrines to his earlier name Qi Tian Da Sheng or Sun Xingzhe that are still present today. These acts of worship probably are what lead to including a monkey acolyte in XuanZang's first pilgrimage. From there his name became more widespread and a lot of the modern shrines today are made in the last century or so.

Zhu Bajie was already created before Wu Cheng'en's publication, seen as a deity that is the Taoist marshal Tian Peng Yuan Shuai. Again, I am not aware of how widely known he was but I knew today that Zhu Bajie has been seen as a patron protector for sex workers in Taiwan.

Sha Wujing has legends that he is based upon a sand deity that protected XuanZang when he went to India to fetch the scriptures, a Japanese Buddhist source claiming that he was an avatar of King Vaisravana. I am not sure if this has a lot of bases but he wasn't created for the purpose of the novel at least.

All that being said, all these characters already had creditable backgrounds that were used within the novel but I don't doubt that the publication of the novel is what has kept their legends alive to this day.

Xiyouji is all about religious meanings from many different aspects so it's not crazy to think that Wu Cheng'en was able to find and re-work already established figures into his narrative to create a memorable impression of these deities to new generations.
