Learn Chinese and Chinese Culture in stories|Chinese Idiom | Brotherhood...
The Three Kingdoms is a special period in Chinese history, most of the characters of that times have distinct personalities. Shu was one of kingdoms . The founding monarch of Shu, Liu Bei, was a little guy who made and sold straw shoes for a living before. Liu Bei's success can not be separated from the great help of his two sworn brothers Guan Yu and Zhang Fei.The idiom "Taoyuan Jieyi" tells the story of they became sworn brothers in a peach garden.
三国是中国历史上一个特殊时期,三国时期的人物大多个性鲜明。蜀国是三国时期的一个王国,他们的开国君主刘备以前只是个靠卖草鞋为生的小人物。刘备的发迹离不开他的两个结拜兄弟关羽和张飞的鼎力相助,成语‘桃园结义’讲的就是他们三人结拜为兄弟的故事。

I can’t resist poking my nose into this. I don’t think there are specific names but there are some common tropes:
1. A common trope in modern media (esp. light novels and tv dramas) is having titles that are puns on the main character names. These four are just recent dramas I remember off the top of my head, with two characters in top-billing. (* indicates when a homophone, or near-homophones (same sound, different tone) is used). All three from 2020 are based on novels with the same name.
“And The Winner Is Love/月上重火/yue shang chong hou” (2020) with characters Shangguan Tou and Chong Xuezhi
“My True Friend/我的真朋友/wo de zhen peng* you” (2019) with characters Shao Pengcheng and Cheng Zhenzhen
“Skate into Love/冰糖炖雪梨/bin* tang dun xue li*” (2020) with characters Tang Xue and Li Yubing
“Under the Power/锦衣之下/jin yi* zhi xia*” (2020) with characters Lu Yi and Yuan Jinxia
(And, um, CQL – Chen Qing Ling, anyone????)
1.5 Bonus points if the title makes a literary reference!
The drama “My Sunshine”(2015), adapted from an internet novel, is titled “何以笙箫默/he yi sheng xiao mo” in Chinese and has characters 何以琛/ he yichen and 赵默笙/ zhao mosheng. The title/character references 20-th century poet Xu Zhimo’s famous “Zaibie Kangqiao/ Farewell Cambridge” containing the following lines (wikipedia translations):
悄悄是别离的笙箫;/Peace is my farewell music; 夏虫也为我沉默,/ Even crickets are now silent for me,
One of Wang Yibo’s earlier dramas, “Love Actually” (2017) takes this up to eleven with the title “人间至味是清欢/ ren jian zhi wei shi qing huan” with characters 丁人间/ ding renjian, 翟至味/ zhai zhiwei, and 安清欢/ an qinghuan. This references a Song dynasty prose by Su Shi, with the following line (which I’m translating badly)
人间有味是清欢。/ The most meaningful tastes in life are simple joys.
I also see a lot of fan-fictions with OC’s taking this route for both character name and title, but this is hard to execute well. This approach constrains candidates for both titles and character names. 人间/renjian literally means “human realm”, which is quite implausible as a name. Referring to the poem that inspired “默笙/mosheng” (“silent sheng”, where sheng is an instrument) could veer easily into “trying too hard” with an inexperienced writer.
2. Trying very hard with references in fanfiction to make the name “deep”, which also falls into the spirit of fitting your main names into a clever phrase.
An actual example in the Ashes of Love fandom: the main character 锦觅/jin mi (”brilliance, seeking”) gets her name from an in-universe poem, “繁花似锦觅安宁/fan hua si jin mi an ning” (roughly: seeking peace in brilliantly-flowered world). Tons of fanfic OCs related to her gets named “安宁/an ning” (aka ”peace”) and a lot of fics are named that exact line from the poem.
We can try apply this to CQL. For example, Lan Wangji’s name appears in Li Bai’s poem in the line “我醉君复乐/wo zui jun fu le,陶然共忘机/tao ran gong wang ji.” A cliched way to name a character or item that has a close relationship to LWJ would be “复乐/fu le” or “陶然/tao ran” to match the poem, even if they are not the most obvious choices for names. (Then use the poem as the fic title ;) )
3. “Common-in-Fic” surnames. Someone did a text mining study (article in Chinese at https://www.douban.com/note/590741250/ ) on one of the largest Chinese self-publishing platform (jjwxc, where mdzs was first published, contains both original and fan fictions). They found that the top 10 most common surnames for main characters in stories on the platform are 林/lin、苏/su、顾/gu、沈/shen、白/bai、李/li、叶/ye、陆/lu、秦/qin、and 陈/chen, which is of course out of proportion with their actual frequency in the population. Try compare this list with (non-historical) C-dramas characters vs Chinese people you know: only Li and Chen are in top 10 in real life. They over-represent names that are relatively more common in Suzhou (modern-day Gusu), a region of China that has a long history of fine art and culture. Two-character surnames are also highly overrepresented in fic.
A special mention goes to “苏/su”, which due to its pronunciation, is often used to describe characters with Sue-like characteristics in internet jargon.
So, in summary, name-a-Mary-Sue in Chinese light novels in Four Easy Steps
Choose thematically relevant (or pretty) phrase. [BONUS if it is from an actual classical poem or prose ]
Break the line down or otherwise work it into two useable names for important characters.
Pick a surname that sounds like it comes Suzhou, or a two-character surname
Title your entire work based on your original phrase
A cultural aside: Chinese literature contains a vast body of work dating back thousands of years and is heavily taught in school. Chinese students really are expected to have hundreds of poems and proses fully memorized throughout k-12. Whereas English classes in the West emphasizes clear, plain, expository-style writing, Chinese education (in my experience) encourages the use of allusions and other devices to add “depth” to writing. These naming tropes are partially the result of how writers are educated in a different culture.
Tropes are not bad in themselves, but they can be amusing if not executed well, or over-used in certain contexts. However, needlessly to say there are many works that used allusions beautifully and effectively, even in light novels. I think the two examples I gave in 1.5 are really clever. Who knows, the work that inspires the next CQL could be named just like this ;)
P.S. In defense of “Mei” – it could be fine if it refers to 梅, aka plum blossom, which is used for names. They are the flowers of the winter/early spring when they may be the only flower in bloom, they can bloom in the snow, and they are a popular theme in art and literature. Naming a girl 美 (beautiful) tend to clash with Chinese traditions that prefer humility and subtlety, but it is sometimes used with another character/noun (i.e. “beautiful something-else”, I guess).
This is not really a character name request but rather a silly question: Is there a chinese equivalent to your classic "mary sue" type names? I'm thinking "Ebony Dark'ness Dementia Raven Way" sort of name vibes. Is there a chinese light novel equivalent to these characters? Do they have distinctive names? this question will not leave my mind thanks so much, your blog is awesome!
(
LOOOL Ebony Dark'ness Dementia Raven Way - oh dark days.
Hmmmmmmmmm I honestly don’t know because I don’t do that much reading in Chinese. Like the name that comes to mind is like 春桃花 lol Chun Taohua. It literally means Spring Peach Flower.
Or any girl with the word mei 美 in her name. It means beautiful and just so... blargh. Anytime I see a English show with a “chinese” character named “mei” I’m like........... can y’all not?
Does anyone else wanna crack at it?
