Hi, Kirri! I'm from South America and I'm trying to do a research about australian high school. I would like you to clarify some questions I have about school subjects, like: which ones are optional and which are mandatory? also, if you could send me some reliable websites than i can look up. every website i see says something different, can be very confusing so I decided to ask a australian person. Thank you!!!!
Hi, hey, i've been summoned! Okay, i'll admit to you upfront, it's been a hot minute since I was in high school so my knowledge is partly from personal experience but also what is published online. The school structures and curriculum differs from state to state, so it's no wonder you had trouble finding clear answers. I'll try to explain simply:
Australian high schools run from years 7 to 12. (We actually have 13 school years in total including Kindergarten, or preparatory, which is not numbered.) Students can finish in year 10 if they choose not to complete their senior years and test for university entry. If a student finishes in year 10, they get a Record of School Achievement; if they finish senior studies, they get a certificate of education depending on which state they're in:
NSW - Higher School Certificate (HSC)
VIC - Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE)/Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL)
QLD - Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE), Queensland Certificate of Individual Achievement (QCIA)
SA - South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE)
WA - West Australian Certificate of Education (WACE)
TAS - Tasmanian Certificate of Education (TCE)
ACT - Australian Capital Territory Senior Secondary Certificate (ACT SSC)
NT - Northern Territory Certificate of Education (NTCE)
The national curriculum has eight compulsory learning areas, which can be categorized into subjects:
Then there are a wide range of electives, which vary greatly depending on region, type of school (state-funded vs private/faith-based) etc. Students in years 9 and 10 typically choose three electives. Here is an example of electives available to a school in NSW.
In addition, many schools offer the opportunity to study a vocational (often trade-based) course in preparation for studies after high school, called TVET (TAFE-delivered Vocational Education and Training). Many of these course results in credits toward school outcomes. I guess you could say that TAFE to Australia is like community college to the US.
The school year is broken up into four 'terms', with dates varying between states (see links at end for a list). A typical school day goes from 8:45am to 3:00pm Monday to Friday, with breaks for recess and lunch between period. A 'period' = one class, which typically runs for 40 minutes.
Upon completing senior studies and final exams, students are given an ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank), which they can use to select and be admitted to university. In fact, senior exams have just begun so it's a good time to keep an eye on social media and see how current students are talking about the experience! 'ATAR Day' (when rankings are released) is on December 14, another time to take a look.
Australia also has specialist high schools, such as creative and performing arts schools, intensive English centres (for students with English as a second language), sports schools, and technology schools. All of these must teach the compulsory subjects, but offer the chance to specialize in these areas.
Websites where you can learn more about the Australian curriculum:
Australian Curriculum Version 9.0 Australian Schools Directory
Study Australia
ACARA (for statistics)
TVET
ATAR
Hopefully that will help you! I hope you don't mind that I posted this answer but I thought it might be useful to others as well. If you have any other questions, go ahead and ask and i'll do my best!

The Australian high school system is standardized to give each student a ranking from 0 to 99.95 at the end of their high school education. The way that this score is determined depends on the state, but typically involves 1-2 years of focused curriculum in 4-6 subjects. It culminates in a series of fairly difficult exams, and uses 'sac' (school assessed coursework) grades to determine a score, which is then applied to a bell curve. I'm happy to do a q and a on this if anyone is interested!

Look-and-say Sequence
This sequence is kinda fun and if you start from 1 it looks a bit like this:
1, 11, 21, 1211, 111221, ...
To generate the next number in this sequence, you just read off the digits from the previous number. For example-
1 is read as “one 1″ which gives the next number, 11
11 is read as “two 1′s” which then gives 21
21 is read as “one 2, one 1″ which gives 1211; this process is then repeated forever and ever.
As someone who really didn’t enjoy the series and sequences chapters that have been taught through highschool so far, I’ve been able to find some joy in this sequence :)

Intro Post
Hey!
My name is Lexi. I use she/her pronouns. I am seventeen and a senior in high school in Australia. I am currently working towards my QCE and ATAR.
Subjects |
I take literature, math methods, chemistry, legal studies, film and am halfway through my cert III in business.
Background |
I get decently good grade however I really don't put in as much effort into my studies as I probably should which is not a great habit to have going into my final year. Hence why I am making this account to motivate myself and keep myself accountable.
My mental health also isn't the greatest but you know whose actually is.
I play a bunch of netball and do a lot of leadership related things
For university, I think I want to do a double degree in business (management) / creative industries (media and communications) at QUT but you know what who knows because I also desperately want to do a gap year so idk
So anyway that's about all. You can follow along if wish and I hope you have a great day/night.

Queensland Year 12 students wake to ATAR result
The Queensland class of 2021 are celebrating their final results today after a tumultuous final two years studying during the COVID-19 pandemic. Of the 51,709 school-leavers, 27,277 will wake up to their Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR), 32 of which will receive the highest rank of 99.95.
The median ATAR for 2021 is 78.55, with 23.86 per cent obtaining a rank of 90 or above.
The school-leavers are the second cohort in Queensland to complete the new Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) curriculum, and receive an ATAR instead of an Overall Position (OP).

TREC AGM 2019
This year TREC’s Annual General Meeting was held at our new office at Highfields Centre on 11 September 2019. The meeting was a success all around, particularly given that it was our first AGM after our recent relocation. The formal meeting began with an address from our chairperson Surinder Sharma. The focus of the address was reflecting on the last 52 years of our organisation and how in past decades the issue of race equality was in the national agenda in a way it isn’t now. He spoke about how the climate around race equality has changed since brexit with the debate now focused on migration, asylum, and the immigration status of the people here. He said public discourse today is very different in terms of what people will say and feel is their right to say with people saying things that in the 1970’s, 1980’s, and 1990’s they wouldn’t have been allowed to. He concluded by pointing out how despite the fight for race equality being pursued with vigour nationally the position of people with Black and Asian minority backgrounds has not improved.
The evening then received the annual report from Iris Lightfoote CEO which highlighted the various strands of work TREC undertook to help improve the lives of individuals in the city. This year the report made a point to focus on several case studies of individuals TREC has helped over the past year. This is to give a better idea of the stories of some of the individuals we have helped because in a world where increasingly people are being reduced to numbers in spreadsheets, and statistics it is important to remember that there are real people behind the figures. They all have stories, they all have lives, and they have had those lives changed and helped by the work we do. The meeting then took a few moments to recognise and celebrate the dedication, and long term service of Surinder Sharma, Jennifer Finlayson, and Iris Lightfoote whose hard work over the years was acknowledged and celebrated.
The evening then featured a presentation from two exchange students who have been working with TREC on placement from the University of Leicester: Xiaoqian Zhang, and Haiyun Zhang. They came to us to work with the University of Leicester on an interactive presentation called Where Do Our Mobiles Come From which has since been on display and available to the public at the digital reading room at the University. The focus of the piece is on taking a closer look at where our mobiles come from, what materials are needed to make up the component parts of our mobiles, and where and how these materials are mined. During his presentation Xiaoqian spoke about how he had to learn new software, and designs all the aspects of the presentation in a way that was clear to the reader and worked. It was quite a challenge and the fact that they were able to achieve it in just six weeks makes the finished product all the more impressive.
Following the formal meeting TREC welcomed Martin Forde QCe as guest speaker for the evening. He spoke about how he had been invited by the Home Office to devise a Windrush compensation scheme and how he took on the job despite his initial reservations at the idea that the Home Office just wanted a poster boy. He was not willing to let himself be used like that and pushed back, asking hard questions of the Home Office and holding feet to the fire. He went into detail on the history leading up to the Windrush scandal looking at the gradual changes made to Caribbean, West Indian, and Asian people’s status over the decades which led to the problems many are in, and the dangers many face now. He contrasted this with the treatment given to people from Australia, New Zealand, or South Africa and how different it has been for them. He spoke about how the scheme itself was devised to cover as many types of loss as possible due to the Windrush scandal, and how the biggest challenges have been its representation in the media, with the additional lack of trust in the government. He shared he has spoken to people who thought the scheme was a trap designed to catch and deport those who made claims. He thinks there needs to be an increase in community engagement to combat this. He has done everything he can to protect the interests of those who make claims ensuring that there is no cap on claims, or the scheme, that all information collected in regards to claims will be ring fenced, protected, and will not be given to immigration enforcement. All compensation is also ring fenced against tax and benefits with a 16 month grace period before either are affected by the compensation so claimants have time to decide what to do with it. Ultimately his main message was that he has worked hard to make sure the scheme works with the safety of claimants in mind and he wanted to encourage those in attendance, and those reading this to spread the word to those who have been impacted by the Windrush scandal. He stated he knew there is a big fear factor involved in anything to do with the government but that we can try to tackle it by getting the message out that this scheme exists, people have potential claims, and that their information will be protected.
With the conclusion of his speech Mr. Forde took a Q and A session with the audience which was followed by food for all in attendance. TREC wants to extend its thanks to Martin Forde and to everyone who attended for making the evening an informative and thought provoking one.

so we were talking about the queensland curriculum and like how different it is today and like i’m looking through the bio one rn and it’s so?? weirdly organised like the vce study designs are really structured and say “you have to do this content in this part of the unit” but the qce one is like “these are the suggested areas! in one big list” and like ? wow?
#[fart noise].txt#text#uni#like huh#you can sort them into categories and most of the stuff is actually the same as vce#it's yeah just structured differently#but like i guess it gives you more room to move with it#but lbr science teachers aren't always that creative lmao#WEIRD MY GUYS#also i thought qld was meant to change to align with the national standards??
