Homer: Are you aware that many Iliad characters are first time fathers? That all of them in one way or another misses a big chunk of their children’s life or never gets to see it at all?
Also Homer: leaves and never elaborates
A doodle for random parenting shiz basically. Order from left to right, top to bottom:
-Menelaus carrying a sleepy Hermione. @hermesmoly I was drawing this when the request came lolol
-Achilles and baby Neo. I don’t know if it’s a thing in other places but hanging on father’s leg and then let him moves it back and forth like an impromptu swing is quite a favorite pastime activity here.
-Odysseus and baby Telemachus who was trying to be a helicopter
-Hector and baby Astyanax when he was born.
-Probably Agamemnon and his three daughters, but I have no official designs. He tried to scold them and was failing. Tbh I feel like Agamemnon would be the type to cosplay buff Bubble from Powerpuff girls along with his daughters. I know he’s not that great but me delulu.
-Patroclus and Neoptolemus. Yes Patroclus contributed in raising him as well, the kid had 2 dads. Fight me.

How old was Neo when he joined the Trojan War?
That is a very good question! Honestly it is hard to estimate since we rarely ever have age markers in Greek mythology in general however it is safe to assume that he was very young.
For example the philosopher Tatian the Assyrian who writes on doctornating the people of his time on Christianity uses the term "μειράκιον" to talk about Achilles which means "youth" or rather "a reckless youth" and he says that Neoptolemus was "younger still" (νεώτερος) so that means he was younger than Achilles when he first entered the war. And Pausanias even mentions how young Achilles was when he went to war given how according to him Phoenix nicknamed Pyrrhus "Neoptolemus" ("young conqueror") because of the age of Achilles.
Now Achilles should have been around 13 the earliest to consumate the marriage with Deidamia and we need to wait around one more year to get the baby done (if let's say Neoptolemus was conceived the same year). We also need to take into account how Neoptolemus needed to fit into his father's armor which was made for him in his adulthood which means his body must have been developed past childhood at that point. There are of course some different accounts like the one of Tzetzes that mention Neoptolemus as a son of Achilles and Iphigenia. That makes little sense here because not only seems unlikely that Achilles would manage to have a child with Iphigenia before she was sacrificed but also that would make Neoptolemus barely 10 years old at war. Tzetzes also mentions ellegedly Achilles looking for her and living with her for a while but these sound more like traditions around the area rather than parts of the Epic Cycle itself.
My estimation is that it fits more for him to be around 15-16 years of age. He is incredibly young (arguably the youngest king still) but still developed enough to be able to fit in the armor in which Achilles died in (on my estimation in his early 30s). So yes I believe he was around 15 when he joined left by his father at Skyros as a toddler.

(Little) Iliad the comic
Tbh for the Priam family, Achilles sounds way more terrifying than a random monster.
P.S. Based on my HC that Neoptolemus had Achilles’ eyes, so Hecuba was staring into the eyes of a dead man, a horrifying dead man.
