I love Epic The Musical very dearly but I do wish just a little bit that we’d gotten to watch Telemachus’s antics in Pylos. His gay awakening(?) over Pesistratus? Athena disguised as an old man?? Nestor and Menelaus?! HELEN! He really has a bewildering time away from Ithaca lol

every once in a while i think about the naming conventions for the children of the iliadic heroes and i just have to mentally marinate in it for a while, it's so interesting to me. the heroes' names are often self-referential (or prophesies/cases of nominative determinism if you wanna imagine them like that), but their children are typically named for an aspect or role of theirs too -- the progeny become references or epithets to their fathers and not themselves.

a very incomplete list off the top of my head:

hector > astyanax, "protector of the city" (and the iliad even says outright that he's called that because of hector's role)

greater ajax > eurysaces, "broadshield"

odysseus > telemachus, "he who fights far away" (as in at troy) or "he who fights from afar" (as in archery)

nestor > pesistratus, "persuader of the army"

menelaus > megapenthes, "he who was great grief", and nicostratus, "victorious army"

it feels like such a delineation, a drawn line marking the end of the age of heroes. their children's names stand as arrows pointing back at the trojan war.
