doodles. [eli moskowitz]
Tumblr media
cw; fem!reader, some language, drawing on eli, artistic!coded!reader (i guess?), established relationship, eli being a sweetheart, just some fluffiness for your dash <3
Tumblr media
“so… what is it, exactly?”
eli’s voice was soft, curious, his brows furrowed as he examined the colorful, curved lines decorating his arm. you laughed lightly, “it’s going to be a mandala.”
“looks kind of trippy to me.” eli jested, tracing one of the lines with a long finger. you playfully pushed his hand away and huffed.
“they’re supposed to be trippy.” you quipped, as if it was the most obvious thing in the world. “now hush. i need absolute silence.”
eli fell quiet while you zeroed in on your task, hand expertly adding the finishing touches to the colorful piece. it wasn’t anything you’d see in an art museum, but you thought it looked pretty good for something drawn on a canvas of skin with shitty school-issued markers.
you smiled widely and capped the purple marker in your hand with an exclamation of “all done!” — eli pulled his arm away and analyzed it as if it were some ancient relic; eyes gentle and reverent.
“i’m gonna get this tattooed.” eli stated after a few seconds of silent observation, and your heart skipped a beat.
“you can’t do that.” you said, voice airy with disbelief. was he being serious right now? it was just a silly doodle you had created from boredom and the temptation of your boyfriend’s bare arm.
eli met your gaze and flashed you one of those small smiles — one that was genuine, soft, adoring; a brand of lip-quirking reserved for your eyes only.
“would you rather i get your name instead?” eli pressed, and you let out a bark of laughter whilst shaking your head.
“why would you even want to do something like that?” you quizzed, throat feeling a little thick suddenly. eli blinked once, twice, then his smile widened.
“because i love you. and i want something permanent to remind me of you when we’re apart.”
Tumblr media
i started cobra kai very recently (yesterday, in fact) and i’m only on s3, so if the characterization isn’t very good i apologize deeply! tbh i fell in love with eli pretty much the instant he was introduced, and i just knew i had to write something about him. thank you so much for reading and i hope you enjoyed! <3

Obscutober 2024 Day 16: Escutcheon 🛡️
----------
Escutcheon (n.)
a shield or shield-like surface on which a coat of arms is depicted
an ornamental or protective plate around a keyhole, door handle, drawer pull, light switch, etc.
----------
We are officially halfway through October/Inktober! 🎉
You could say I went with something more on the simple side to “celebrate,” but it was mostly just a coincidence. 😅 I am still happy with it, though! 👍
Click the "Keep Reading" and we'll talk a little more about my thoughts/process. ✨

----------
Once again for catharsis: We are officially halfway through the month, Sparklers! 🥳
...And you'd think that to celebrate, I'd actually be able to get today's piece posted earlier, but nope! And it really is no one else's fault but my own this time—I had this one already 90% finished, but I let myself get distracted by some other things I know really could've waited until after this was taken care of. 😅 I accept my fate!
But it is what it is; At least I don't think the art itself suffered as a result.
This one felt relatively easy since, as might be overly obvious, it put very specific images in my head—Much of which I thought translated well enough into a mandala design. Namely, I kept picturing a keyhole plate that was etched gold, and I went with a very basic, "classic" shield shape because the definition literally says "shield" and I associate coats-of-arms images with a pretty shield-like shape as it is. And I also associate coats-of-arms strongly with royalty, so that's where the crown shapes came from.
Once I had those shapes in place as a foundation, it felt fair to just kind of fill in with more general mandala motifs that, at least to me, feel reasonably adjacent to some detail work you might see in these kids of decorative plates...However, I will admit I didn't actually bother looking up references for this one, so if you're personally more familiar with "Escutcheons" and some of the motifs I picked look terribly out of place...Well, here's my excuses and an apology, I guess. 😆
The colors were also very straightforward. I went with silver and goal for the metal base, then offset them with some abstract shadows. I added the spots of red, blue, purple, and green as a last-minute pop; The whole package was missing something, and I each of these colors in jewel tones I again associate pretty strong with royalty, plus I think they're fairly common inclusions in colored coats-of-arms designs.
My one regret in the design is that the white lines + browns in the background make me think an awful lot of a Gingerbread house, but when I tried switching the lines to black, everything just felt horribly flat.
At that point I really did not feel like going back over the background colors to try and "fix" the black lines when the white ones were fine outside of the Gingerbread thing (and this was after I got distracted, so I was running short on time, too)...So white lines it is! Who says you can't make a Gingerbread house that looks more like a castle for Gingerbread Royalty, anyway? I'm sure someone out there has done it! 😉
...You'd think I'd have more to say than that, but...Well, this one was pretty simple, especially compared to all everything I tried to squeeze into yesterday's. I know I said once before these can't all be super complex, and that holds true for today.
Oh! I should mention: This is yet again one word where I left off part of the definition that I included on the "official" list because it both took up a lot of space and also didn't really fit with the direction I took the art in. Escutcheon, in nautical use, can also mean, "A panel on the stern of a vessel bearing its name and port of registry."
And one final note you Sparklers might find amusing: This is probably the word I'm the most glad I don't have to pronounce out loud for this challenge. 🤭 I've had trouble enough remembering how spell it!
...That should be everything for today, I think. Now let me get to cross-posting before it gets any later...or before I get distracted by something else that could really stand to wait. 😆
See you tomorrow, Sparklers. 🤗

Vermillion Snow: New Year’s Hour
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Designer’s Reflection: New Year’s Hour
Obtained: Welfare for CNY 2022
Rarity: SSR
Attribute: Purple/Sexy
Awakened Suit: The Merry Year
Story - transcripts from Designer’s Reflection
Chapter 1 - New Year Wishes
Chapter 2 - Firework Challenge
Chapter 3 - New Year Eve
Chapter 4 - Happy New Year
Story - summarized
As students get ready to leave for the winter break, Vermillion posts her New Year’s wish in the dorm bulletin board: that she can see the fireworks show with her family.
However, an avalanche blocks the train tracks from her parents’ home in Apple to Cloud. And her parents won’t make it until after the fireworks show.
Vermillion is upset, and she and her best friend and roommate, Xiaoyu, commiserate over their shared ill luck for the holidays. But not long after, Xiaoyu learns about a New Year’s Challenge: whoever can complete the themed tasks first will get to light the fireworks for the show.
The girls are excited as they rush around, making sure to check off the boxes as they complete each challenge: light a lantern, make decorations, wish someone a Happy New Year... And then there are two tasks left: visit the plum blossoms on the mountain, and make a wish on a star. They make it to the mountain and see the blossoms... but the clouds block the sky. They can’t take any pictures of the stars, so they can’t complete the task in time.
Xiaoyu asks Vermillion why the fireworks are so important to her. She explains that before her sister died, she had wished for the whole family to see the New Year fireworks show in Cloud every year. This will be the first time in years that Vermillion is alone.
Xiaoyu says that since they are such good friends, they are like sisters for each other. They enjoy being each other’s family as they find the best spot for watching the fireworks.
Connections
-Vermillion is originally from Apple Federation. She recounts this memory in her Reflection for Flowery Silhouette, and when she goes off to university, she surprises her parents with train tickets back to Apple.
-Vermillion says that Xitong used to tutor Xiaoyu in high school. You find out in Xiaoyu’s Reflection for Early Summer Shower exactly what happened to make the two hate each other.
Fun Facts
-The spring couplets from Chapter 2 are a long-standing tradition in China. It’s two lines of poetry framing either side of a door and one line above, and you can learn more here.
-While the word “mandala” is Sanskrit in origin, the design type can be found all over the world, including in Buddhist art. Buddhism is one of the biggest religions in China.
-Winter holidays are known to be particularly sad for some people, either from loneliness, seasonal depression, or the death or memory of a loved one. Vermillion experiences each of these reasons to varying degrees in this Reflection.

THE TECHNIQUES AND COLOURS USED IN MADHUBANI PAINTINGS
Tumblr media
"Madhubani" Madhubani or Mithila painting have their roots, as the name suggests, in the Madhubani and Mithila regions in Bihar. It is a traditional folk art form that has successfully carved a place for itself not only in Indian art culture but also on an international level. These paintings are done on various mediums such as cloth, hand-made paper, and canvas; and the main themes contain images of Hindu deities such as Krishna, Ram, Shiva, Durga, Lakshmi, and Saraswati; besides including nature, too. Moreover, Madhubani paintings beautifully depict celebrations for weddings. The main categories in Madhubani paintings are traditional, monochrome, tattoo, contemporary, animals, and birds. Also, vegetable colors are used in the making of natural resources. For instance, black is formed by blending soot and cow dung; yellow is made from turmeric, pollen, lime, milk of banyan leaves; blue from indigo; the red color is obtained from the Kusum flower juice or red sandalwood; green from wood apple tree leaves; white is made from rice powder and orange from Palasha flowers Madhubani paintings are known for their distinct style of painting; as well as for their colorful and vividness in their description and appeal. A cordial element of the art form is that it is a very simple art form of painting, and one does not require any specialized knowledge but just a creative mind and artistic flair. Madhubani paintings add a dash of vibrancy to the room and enhance its appeal when used as a home decor item. For instance, when it comes to interior wall decoration, you can go for this form of painting. While the art form traditionally uses basic colors like orange, green and red, you can add colors like pink, purple, blue to make it more attractive, while also choosing a design pattern that is simple and clear. So learn to make Madhubani paintings and bring out your creativity!

Thank you for your answer!
A good reminder that AI is a tool, a powerful one for sure but a tool nonetheless. Whether it makes our lives easier or harder is entirely dependent of how we as a society use it.
One of the reasons I asked you this is because I struggle with writing image descriptions. Like, if you asked me to describe the picture you used as an example, I'd say something like "it's a fanart of the Legend of Zelda series, Windwaker Link is looking through a telescope and sitting on the shoulders of an adult Link from I-don't-know-which-game". Definitely not as good as the one the AI gave you, and while I could work on my description-skills it would cost me time and energy that I don't have.
So I decided to try the apps you mentioned, see if they could make the task easier for me. Under the cut is my experience as a sighted person:
TL;DR: they provide pretty good descriptions, notably for art, but they lack the ability to interpret pictures, especially hand-drawn messy stuff. Also we need more people writing image descriptions, please.
Seeing AI does not work on my phone, but Be My Eyes does. So I tried this one as well as ChatGPT
The first thing with Be My Eyes is that I couldn't change the language of the app, meaning that everything was in French (which means I'm gonna have to translate everything in English, it's not practical for me). The second thing is that I can only take photos, so if I want it to describe a picture I found online I have to take a photo of my computer's screen displaying the picture, and the AI can struggle if I don't take the photo correctly. Needless to say it's easier with ChatGPT, since I can directly send it the picture and ask for an English description.
However, after a few tests I discovered that ChatGPT has a limit of 3 files per days, and if I want to send it more I have to pay a monthly subscription. Thanks but no thanks.
Anyway I asked those apps to describe me a few different pictures, to test what they could and couldn't do.
First I tried something simple, a screenshot of a tweet (this one: https://www.tumblr.com/blindgamermisadventures/754655642864779264?source=share to be precise). As expected both apps gave me the content of the tweet and its author (Be My Eyes even gave me a French translation of the tweet). Nothing groundbreaking but still a job well done 👍
Then I gave them a mandala I colored, posted earlier (https://www.tumblr.com/ultra-puzzlemaster/754681201749639168/i-recently-discovered-that-i-love-coloring?source=share) with the description "Mandala colored with the colors of the intersex-inclusive progressive pride flag." Here's ChatGPT's description:
The image is a vibrant, intricate mandala design featuring a range of bright colors. The mandala has a circular pattern with several layers of detailed geometric and floral motifs. The central part of the mandala is a blue and pink circular design, surrounded by green, yellow, and orange concentric circles, each with unique, repetitive patterns. The outer layers include petal-like shapes in various shades of yellow, orange, red, and purple, with each petal containing smaller decorative elements. The entire design is symmetrical, with a teardrop-shaped extension at the top and bottom, incorporating additional patterns in shades of blue, purple, brown, and yellow. The mandala radiates a sense of harmony and balance with its meticulous details and harmonious color scheme.
This is way better than I expected. It's really detailed, almost 100% correct, it compliments my work (which I'd be too shy to do in my own descriptions), and I think it can give a good impression of what the mandala feels like to someone who cannot see it. Its only weakness is that it doesn't recognize the patterns of the pride flag and mixes the colors in the extensions, but since the goal of the picture is just to be pretty, it's not really a huge problem.
Be My Eyes gave me a similar description but less detailed (and in French).
And at last I tried something that I believe is hard to understand for an AI: an collage of screenshots from an animated movie, real-world maps, and mouse-drawn scribbles (https://www.tumblr.com/magpie-trinkets/754575265780416512?source=share). In short the author was trying to find the location of the theater from the movie Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva, and here's how both apps reacted:
They gave a detailed structure of the global picture, with "top-left", "bottom-center", etc, and could tell there were maps and hand-writing;
They could tell there were pictures of a cliff and a large structure, but they couldn't tell it was from an animated movie and also wrongly said there was a waterfall;
They read the places on the maps
They could mostly interpret the purpose of the global picture, ChatGPT saying: "Overall, the collage seems to be an elaborate, annotated depiction of a geographic and possibly fictional or speculative connection, with detailed mappings and visual references."
They really struggled with the hand-writing. On one of the maps the word "AFTERNOON" is written, which ChatGPT described as "The annotation "AFR & N. AM" suggests a connection between Africa and North America.". Whoops.
They can give a rather good description of simple symbols, like arrows or cardinal directions, but struggle with more complicated or messy things: for instance there is a hand-drawn yellow sun and sunrays on all the maps that weren't mentioned in either descriptions
In summary, the apps are good at making a precise visual description, but they have no idea what the picture is about
To be fair, I struggled too with understanding this picture, and the descriptions they gave are way better than I expected. I don't think those alone would be enough for someone blind, but I could use them to write a more complete description.
If you've read this far, thank you very much and I hope my experience was useful to you in one way or another.
As for me, I'll keep writing image descriptions as best as I can, but I'm definitely gonna use Be My Eyes and ChatGPT to help me: they do a really good job and can provide a solid base, they only struggle at interpreting things.
There's also the problem of ChatGPT being limited or charged. But I believe there is a simple solution for this:
Having more people write image descriptions
Thank you 🙏
Hi! May I ask how you deal with pictures that don't have an image description, please?
Not many on tumblr are going to like the answer, but AI. The app Be My Eyes has a “Be My AI” mode that you can select photos and it will do its best to describe them. Seeing AI has a similar mode. I know most people on tumblr hate AI for what it’s doing for jobs and creativity, but for the disabled community it’s helping with independence, communication, and better understanding of the world around us.
Here is an example!

Rebirth Mandala
This is an intricate Mandala made to express spiritual longevity, rebirth, and our universe's complexity, where, to reach happiness, the final circle, you need to pass through several other circles, as usually happens in life, with moments of joy and sorrow. Four lotus flower representations were added in the corners, to express purity in life. I have used a 20x20cm canvas tied to a wooden frame.
