I got color names for the AvAvM characters

I used four websites which I will bullet in order for each one:

- color-name.com

- colornamer.robertcooper.me

- chir.ag/projects/name-that-color

- colors.artyclick.com

I will also sometimes be pretending their names become their literal personality/design because its fun for this post

EDIT: I forgot to say but the reason I am doing this is cuz I found out Alan Revealed official hex codes for a lot of the characters (idk when this was, I usually look at the AvA wiki and I suddenly saw it there and was like ooh this is useful) I did not do TDL or TDL cuz they are straight up just pure black and red (usually gives no other names for such pure colors although I technically never checked). The mercs did not get hex code reveals sadly (but they are multicolor so I wouldn’t do them anyway). I am not sure who else got hex reveals that I did not do other than hangman and Vic’s gray workers, but hangman is also pure black and I didn’t feel like doing anyone else. (Edited this again)

2023-#3: The Rise of the Catman

You probably have not seen him or heard about him, but one day, he may cross your path. And he is not a black cat that brings you bad luck! He is something of a real superhero…but on the small scale, a potential urban legend, but certainly not known like Burlap Man (see 2023-#2: The Thing in the Fog). I first encountered the Catman in the winter of 2022-2023. The Catman mainly operates on the Chicago public transportation train lines in the fall and winter. He can be described as wearing: leopard print shoes, black Puma pants, a full length, fuzzy, leopard, print coat, leopard print gloves, super thick framed black sunglasses that looks like a robber's mask, and to top it all off - a hat with highly pronounced cat ears. When he wears his Covid mask, it is quite a sight. I started encountering this unusual individual on the north end of the Red and Purple Line trains. Usually, Catman sits there quietly reading some device that resembles Mr. Whoopi’s 3-D BB from the Tennessee Tuxedo cartoon. It is probably an iPad, which he is glued to. He has the calm, detached demeanor of Felix the Cat. However, I have seen disturbances on the train in which the Catman goes into full feline action. I eventually spoke with this Catman on a few train rides and got his story…

First thing I was curious about is why the outfit? He told me that he was tending to a very sick cat for a prolonged period of time. As the cat became sicker, new methods were tried to keep the cat content. One of those methods turned out to be clothes selection which eventually led to the development of his outfit. The cat picked it. That explains the outfit, but doesn’t explain the superhero-like behavior. Some degree of malfeasance is expected on public transportation trains, but during the pandemic crime went crazy on them. The Catman explained that on multiple train rides during the pandemic, he encountered some pretty crazy situations… Elderly women angrily yelling and berating homeless people who get on the train shivering with a blanket around them…creepy huge men wandering on trains like zombies that do not realize they are no longer in prison…one example after another of aggression, as respect, privacy and other values are replaced by the need to be outspoken and rude…and then he had an experience that was the last straw that broke the camel’s backside.

The Catman explained one day he was riding the train and saw an old man being strangely attacked. It was 7am on a mostly empty Purple line train. The old man was a Cubs fan, well into his 80s, wearing all sorts of baseball accoutrements. He had a Cubs hat, a flag, a bag, and all kinds of stuff with their insignia. He was smiling, basking in baseball Heaven, very much looking like the elderly waiter from Twin Peaks. As he sat there alone, he projected some sort of Buddha-like inner peace and joy.

The ancient Cubs fan was then approached by a group of maids traveling from work, all wearing purple. These maids were rather too merry, loud, unruly - and also quite large. The slimmest of the three maids was well over 225 pounds. They began taunting the elderly Cubs fan - who became agitated. The taunting continued and the agitation continued, and then the strange attack began. The three large purple maids lined up and turned their backs towards the Cubs fan. They then began loudly screaming, laughing, and most importantly - aggressively twerking at him. To be clear, twerking is defined as, “sexually suggestive dancing characterized by rapid, repeated hip thrusts and shaking of the buttocks especially while squatting.” They began to slowly step backwards toward him, twerking, laughing and shouting - with their massive mounds menacing the man.

Their twerkings became closer and closer to the aged man, and their very large buttocks appeared as vast purple waves that would soon flood over the poor passenger. The old Cubs fan appeared to be in mortal danger of those bad bouncing buttocks, those approaching awful aggressive asses, those bobbing backsides of beastliness, those diabolically dancing derrières of doom! The Catman considered intervening in this dangerous touch and go situation, but that would mean coming between the man and those threatening twerking buttocks. But the the mad maids were only three feet away from the frightened fan; the space was too narrow. This presented a threat not unlike that of churning Charybdis and Scylla, where all would soon be crushed by the rocks at sea!

The twisted twerkers were now within two feet of the shocked man and getting closer. The old Cubs fan sported a facial expression of extreme horror, like this was his worst nightmare. The loud and unruly maids sang, stomped their feet, and laughed as they surrounded him with a solid wall of twerking terror! The old man rapidly and repeatedly pressed the emergency security buzzer for the train conductor, and the maids were almost on him. Catman said, “I couldn’t see his face anymore, just their killer keisters, like he was sucked in and away, like in a Robert Crumb comic.”

The train pulled into the next station, the twerkers raced off the train, and the train conductor was running to the train car. The Catman was left wondering how he could have intervened, to have protected the man from those fearsome fat flying fannies. He said there were too many other similar occurrences on the trains that drove him to become the Catman. The Catman had enough of this chaos, so he changed his outfit and picked up a keychain device that makes multiple types of cat sounds. Now he easily diffuses bad situations just with his outfit, making hisses and cat sounds only when necessary.

So the next time you ride the train in Chicago in cold weather, and you see a human Felix the Cat lurking about, it is probably the Catman.

Open Studios interactive project

UCSC DANM grad school winter 2023 - week 9-10

The final prompt for my interactive art class involved a skill share. From one other student I learned how to use a RFID reader with a raspberry pi. From the other I learned how to do needle felting. We each created small figures out of felt and decided to put them in a space together, with different zones that they could interact with. Here’s the felt figure I created.

This was also the first time I ever sewed anything! I sewed the wings. 

Here’s the brainstorming board the three of us put together to create a weird version of a petting zoo:

We planned on showing it off at the art department’s open studio (despite the fact that we’re not part of the art department). While we were able to show stuff at the open studios, other projects ended up taking priority and this didn’t come to fruition the way that we had originally planned.

I wanted to make a reference to Nam June Paik’s TV buddhas, but I wanted to make it softer and kind of silly. I crafted a cute TV out of felt and replaced the dragon’s head. 

I intended on having the dragon (now a TV dragon) watch himself on a TV while it streamed to Twitch. I wanted to install COZYSPACE as well, near where this was. When you place the TV dragon in the right place, I wanted a little bit of music to play. This idea got a little out of hand, but I managed to set everything up that I planned, and it worked fine.

I began 3D printing the shapes in COZYSPACE at various sizes with the intention of hanging them near the TV and the dragon. 

I also wanted to have the controllers for COZYSPACE be closer to my original vision of regular Super Nintendo controllers, but wireless. I got a pair and began painting them to make them cuter.

I used regular spraypaint from the hardware store, using the splatter technique I learned from making stuff for BEARPAD. I chose a purple and teal color scheme with pastel accents, as COZYSPACE was originally intended to chill me out personally, and I like that early 90s party cup/taco bell aesthetic. The spray paint took a long time to cure - the controllers were still a little sticky for up to a week after I painted them.

I rigged a raspberry pi and RFID reader to activate when placing a chip on it, combining a couple tutorials online to get it to also play music using the pygame library. I have only minimal python coding experience and it took a bit longer than I anticipated. I was amused that people recommended playing .ogg files for audio, as I haven’t really heard of those being used in over 15 years. I wrote a piece of music really quickly to play when the TV dragon rests on the cozy spot. I made a synth sound, threw a bunch of effects on it, and improvised in g flat major pentatonic using my computer keyboard in ableton.

Patrick designed a new shape that would look good alongside the shapes in COZYSPACE, but was large enough to hold a raspberry pi and an RFID reader. We grabbed a raspberry pi case design from thingaverse and dropped it into Blender to make sure we had the size right, built a chamber for it, then he built a shape out around the chamber. Here’s some pics of it hanging in action. 

I tried it out streaming on twitch, but it immediately brought up concerns of privacy, so I ditched it and left it on the OBS screen, as though he was about to start streaming on twitch. I felted the RFID sensor inside of the bottom of his head so that his head would activate the sensor. I threaded a wire through him and attached an alligator clip to fishing line from above, so that people could attach it to that and have him rest on the cozy shape, watching himself on the TV. The sensor range was very small, however, making it a little finicky and not the experience I had hoped.

I added the LED strips late in the install. There are kits you can buy for ambient lighting that sits behind a flatscreen TV. You plug in your HDMI cable and it takes the video signal and translates some of the colors to the LED strips. I know there are ways to make them with raspberry pis or with arduinos, but i was running out of time and wanted the effect of the colors in the COZYSPACE also changing the color of the 3D printed shapes, so I bought the kit from amazon. It plugged in and worked well enough right away for my purposes. I draped the LEDs a little haphazardly around the install in a way that I thought looked good for my purposes.

Setting up took MUCH longer than I had anticipated. I spent about 2 and a half days of work just blacking out the space, setting everything up, and hanging the cozy shapes. 

I was a little worried I wouldn’t have enough time for everything to get done, but I ended up setting up everything I wanted. I left programming the controllers for last because I didn’t want to spend more time in Unity after not using it for so long. I found a way to address the joystick buttons directly in the code rather than using Unity’s input manager, which was a relief. 

I also made some tweaks to the sound of cozyspace. Each of the 4 channels is playing a sub bass frequency that is slightly out of sync with the others, giving the sensation of something moving around in space around people in the center of the installation. I made the frequencies closer, which made the movement feel much much slower. I also made the looping track twice as long, adding some slight movement to the tracks, and reset everything to G flat major.

The actual open studios was a very educational experience, hah. I learned that people need to be told when you can touch the art. I assumed (incorrectly) that bean bags and video game controllers would be enough, but I had to invite people to interact with it. In the future I’ll have signage with my name and info about the work, even for an open studios.

First off… CAUTION. Do NOT astral project without some significant kind of protection. I had to learn this the hard way and it was FUCKING HELL. Don’t be like me and try this stuff blind/alone.

I was up in the snow at my family cabin 🏕 🏠 a few days ago. My good friend brought some good kush which usually helps me see the spirit/astral realm.

I went on a solo walk and was drawn to a specific tree. By this point I had a few experiences with plant communication, so I decided to open up communication. I took my snow gloves off and put my hand ✋ on the tree🌲 . Since I had weed in my system I didn’t need to put any effort into leaving my body or finding the tree’s astral location.

I found my self to be a point (in the sketch represented as a little purple me so it reads that it is my astral form) on a giant torrent of light flowing forward. Looking far in the distance I could see that this torrent of light had paths that would split off it. I also saw other torrents on all sides of, above, and below me, which ran parallel to the beam which I was on. It took me a little while to realize that this massive beam of astral light was in the shape of the tree which I had my material-hand on.

With little warning I saw this happy, brightly glowing, light blue, kinda pig tail hairstyled, tear drop shaped, frantically waving entity appear before me. I could tell telepathically that she was female, and this was atypical with my other communications with plant spirits as they are usually unconcerned with human concepts such as gender. She also fluttered up and down which I thought was just motion created by the intense waving she was doing, but she continued this flutter even after she stopped waving. I still assumed that this was a manifestation of the material tree which I was holding. This spirit sensed my assumption and telepathed (tp’d) me that she wasn’t the tree she just lived in the tree. It was then that I realized this was a fairy 🧚‍♀️ which I was in communication with; a first for me 🥳. She tp’d me how it was kinda like a human house inside the tree’s astral form. But I could also tell that this was an incomplete analogy.

I have been going up to this cabin around the material location of this tree all my life, so I asked (materially out-loud) if she had see me before “even in a distant, human kind of way.” But she very bluntly tp’d me that she had no memory of me at all.

I soon realized that I had seen things like this before but was never able to describe it exactly as I saw it. I grew a little sad at the realized likelihood that this experience would disappear into the void of the forgotten. I said “thank you for the talk,” opened my eyes, and broke communication. But in the distance, in a patch of sky poking out from between the tree’s I saw a luminescent meditating 🧘 figure and I saw a geometric sequence of dots which was centered on this figure. I understood this to be a Buddha encouraging me that I did have the potential to keep this experience.

Later as I returned from my walk to the cabin I recalled this experience and drew the rough sketch ✍️ attached to this post. And after I continued to perceive the fae, perhaps more dimly, even as the weed began to leave my system.

On a walk with my homies, I noticed a spirit attached to tree on the side of the road and he was grumpy. I could just sense frustration and anger emitting from this spirit. When my friends inquired as to the cause of this spirit’s anger, I tp asked and learned that trucks driving along that road put stress on the roots of the tree.

I also noticed that several trees were hosting fae “parties.” It was then that I realized the fairies were staying in these trees because they were the only living plants around since the snow had been stacking for several days. After finding a human-receptive fae “party” I was able to learn that they were celebrating that: some things (like evergreen trees) always survive even through winter ❄️, death 💀 cannot reach all timelines, that life 🤩 isn’t as bad as it could be. My friend semi-ironically/semi-genuinely described it as Wookiee life day which is actually pretty apt.

So I hope this experience which I relayed can help us realize that life really is beautiful. Maybe someone is caught up in the toxins of modern human societies, and has an overly pessimistic view life and the total-cosmos as a result. Maybe this can help such people realize that there’s much more to reality than these shabby prisons which so many of us build. Maybe this can help some to see the reality of the spiritual, and thusly aid their enlightenment, just as the recording of this experience was aided by a Buddha.
