never posted these here but wanted to prop this up: a well directed sequence! some VERY strong and in your face parallels (especially that up angle of Popeye and Bluto throwing Olive onto the couch, establishing her as the helpless middleman), little nuances that support those parallels, and just a great helping of personality that is always so dominating of the Popeye cartoons. that the dominating music here is “Love thy Neighbor”—used with an acerbic irony—ties it all together.
the punches Popeye and Bluto throw at each other is my favorite part. Bluto only needs to throw one punch—it matches how big, imposing, and “whole” he is. Popeye throws multiple; they’re smaller, just as he is, but more spry and split the difference. likewise, Bluto throwing in that extra “runt” after his punch is a great reflection of his character—he resorts to violence AND petty insults, making him seem even more unlikable. Popeye gets back at him with the violence, but he doesn’t stoop to his level with the name-calling.
even how they react to Olive offering candy is indicative of their character. Bluto is indulgent, pleasure-seeking (even if it is from a mere chocolate), and seldom thinks before he acts. Popeye on the other hand is more courteous, polite, and doesn’t succumb to his instincts as easily. his “no thank you,” is more genuine than Bluto’s own coy expression of thanks
#Bluto has made me realize just how much i love completely lecherous characters. him Scoutmaster Lumpus Plankton… i hesitate to add Daffy#because those are not the traits i think of when i barf my 10000th ‘i ❤️ Daffy Duck’ post but i would also be remiss not to note him since#that characterization is what the general public sees him as. but still#even then i love Olive AND Popeye just as much as Bluto so it all evens out. but Bluto is such a fun character because of how just. utterly#despicable and an example of human scum he is#popeye#pleased to meet cha!#bowsky#vid

Do you have any more yuri recs?
sure, here's a few
love thy neighbor: about 24 year old uni student pah doyeon and her 40 year old housewife neighbor jin joo. jin joo's husband left her alone as he works to pay off his debts, and it has Not been a fun few months for her, as the loan sharks after him have been terrorizing her daily. luckily, pah doyeon is there to lend a hand and shelter!
probably my biggest recommendation as of right now, so long as you don't mind the very much not healthy nature of the whole situation. this baby's got everything in it: blasphemy, cheating, milf-hunting, obsession, self-discovery through lust, and so on. pah doyeon is great. there's a lot wrong with her. she said this shit unprompted in the latest chapter
a love yet to bloom: a sweet story about takamine, who has yet to find anything in life she enjoys, and sakura, a book-loving girl she happens to meet on the train after school. it's very cute and has a nice, chill atmosphere. i always look forward to the next update
otome no teikoku: ok so. heres the thing. if you decide to pick this up the first, idk, dozen chapters will be Bad. there's a lot of male-gazey uncomfortable stuff at the beginning, and while it doesnt take too long for it to stop feeling so offputting and start being surprisingly wholesome and earnest instead, it never stops being horny, so read it if youre in the mood for that.
as for what it's actually about... well there's this all girls school, right? and it has girls in it. and they are all gay and dating each other. its basically just a collection of short chapters about different couples within this school, and it has some of my favorite dynamics and moments in yuri. i reread it very often (and there's almost 300 chapters of this thing out, so that's a feat) and it never stops being enjoyable. stan nononon/yumimi
a monster wants to eat me: about hinako, who lost her whole family to the sea in a tragic accident and now yearns to join them in the afterlife, and shiori, a mermaid claiming she's here to eat her. the problem is, hinako being actively suicidal and depressed means her flesh won't exactly be very tasty, and shiori is a bit of a gourmet, meaning her goal is to first help her recover and regain her joie de vivre, and only then will she eat her. i highly recommend this
out of the blue!: transfer honor student x delinquent yuri. it's very short so i dont wanna yap about it too much, but it's a big big personal fave. it's only 4 chapters so check it out
sougou tovarisch: honestly anything by arata iri never fails to get at least one laugh out of me, but this one especially. if you know a kiss and a white lily by canno (and if you don't, go check it out), the premise to this one is a bit similar to the dynamic between ayaka and yurine, with hardworking MC obsessed with being number one and chill love interest who beats her without even meaning to.
the focus here is less on romance and more on comedy, and i love it. kanna is amazing. she wins a chess match by punching her opponent so hard she passes out. its only 13 chapters + assorted extras, very fun easy read
now some stuff that doesnt really have yuri as focus but ive really enjoyed regardless and want to shout out and this is my blog so whatever
liar satsuki can see death: satsuki can see dead people. specifically, she can see the future corpses of people up to 24 hours before they actually die. she always zealously warns the future victims of the imminent danger, and she has been branded a weirdo and a liar for it as no one has ever actually died before. in truth, she is actually literally incapable of lying, and the only reason everyone survived so far is that she will go to frankly insane lengths to save them. she's a great protagonist and her autistic swag has captivated me and many others
mieruko-chan: miko can see... Things. that no one else can. but she has to pretend she cant, especially to the Things themselves. she doesnt know exactly what will happen if they realize she can see them, but she's certainly not about to find out.
this started as a twitter short that quickly gained popularity, so the premise of many early chapters is basically "miko sees something terrifying and has to ignore it, hilarity ensues", but the initially one-off characters introduced over time are eventually explored and given quite a lot of spotlight and im having a lot of fun with it. stan michiru
there's always more but here's what ive got so far- wait. read shuukura. ive talked about it before it's in my pinned please read shuukura i love those weirdos to an insane degree
#Anonymous#yuri recs#kinda wanna post some otome no teikoku pages later#its really good guys i swear

inspired by @majorbaby's stellar thoughts
The more I think about it the more Mulcahy + violence gets interesting. Like, I know the whole boxing thing is pretty traditional for a working-class Irish guy and part of the reason the show plays it so much is because it’s comedic in its contrast (eg. “love thy neighbor or I’ll punch your lights out” (08x13 “captains outrageous”), "How'd you like your last rites…and a few lefts?”(08x25 “April Fools”)!). But I think reading his violence straight has a lot of potential to wrt the ways that the Catholic Church + imperialism + violence intersect. Like… I do think “love thy neighbor or I’ll punch your lights out” is very Catholic Church imho. Of course, the way that his quick temper is designed to add to his character appeal I think also plays into ideas about masculinity etc etc (which themselves are racialized… so it goes).

One of the true-crime shows I watch is “Fear Thy Neighbor,” which is basically stories of neighbors getting mad at one another and usually murdering one or the other.
Anyway, I bring this up because I just started the new season and the first episode is about a set of neighbors in Wilkes-Barre, which is about forty-five minutes from me. One set of neighbors is a pair of loudmouth homophobic bullies, the other neighbor is their verbal punching bag who snaps and murders them during a snowstorm almost three years ago, and literally *everybody*, even the witnesses that day, is fucking armed.
The number of times I heard something on the episode, thought about this area, sighed, and muttered, “Yeah, that tracks” … y’all, I’m just lucky I wasn’t playing a drinking game.
#tw murder#tw true crime#I mostly watch this show because my parents once had a neighbor this bad#and the happy ending of that story is that he died in bed before he could try anything#and my mom got her revenge by buying his house and tearing it to the damn ground#anyway if you think YOUR mom is petty …

my huge fixation on the rats has come back again so out of curiosity, what are some of your favorite tracks, and why?
Oh man sorry it took me so long to answer this! It ended up being harder than I thought to narrow down a list of my favorite songs but here’s (some) of my current faves at least!
Lookin’ After No. 1 - A bit of a cliched inclusion but it’s still (imo) the best example of their early punk/post-punk sound, and you can really hear how well Garry and Simon meshed with their playing. Plus I’m an utter sap and it makes me very emotional to think of Bob going from writing “Don’t give me love thy neighbor / Don’t give me charity” to. yknow. putting on the entirety of Live Aid.
(Also don’t eVEN talk to me about the Music Machine gig, every time I think of Bob singing “Don’t wanna be like you / Don’t wanna live like you / Don’t wanna talk like you at all / I’m gonna be like me” in the face of the neo-nazi skinheads who just punched him in the face I go INSANE)
Joey’s On The Streets Again - Look I know that if we’re picking “Top songs Bob wrote about the Ireland of his childhood” then Rat Trap is understandably always gonna be at the top of the list but consider: Joey is just a better song, especially the last verse of it.
Also the Self Aid Joey performance? SO FUCKING GOOD genuinely my favorite live performance of this song that they’ve ever done
Wind Chill Factor Minus Zero - The lyrics just do it for me. I feel like a lot of people don’t think of Bob Geldof as a great lyricist but he really is and this song is just full of little clever lines like “You start to laugh (No) / You say you’ve won (No) / It’s just I lost (No) / That’s not the same (No)” that just make it SO satisfying to sing!
Also gotta put a shout out to “Real Different” for the same reason, every time I hear Bob sing “I'll fill my pocket full of stones and I'll throw 'em at the light” I just go feral asldkfjals
The Elephant’s Graveyard - You know that quote about (I Never Loved) Eva Braun that describes the song as something like the happiest most upbeat song about Hitler you’ll ever hear? The Elephant’s Graveyard is exactly like that but for police brutality and the Rats fucking made it work.
Obviously if we’re talking about social justice themes in their songs Mondays and Banana Republic are gonna top the list but listen. Listen. Bob wrote a song specifically about anti-black police brutality in Florida that calls out the double-standards of the US justice system (“Justice isn’t blind / It just looks the other way”), made the campiest beach-themed music video for it, and somehow they completely nailed the combination.
House on Fire - IT’S JUST A FUCKING BANGER OF A SONG! Seriously between the brass instruments and Bob’s voice it’s just such a fun and funky song, and it’s a great example of the Rats playing around with their sound in their later albums in a way that just works perfectly for them.
Also it has more good mouth-feel lyrics in it, like the line “Doing halo hula-hoops, executing loop-de-loops / Takes a lot of skill and bad taste” is just sooo satisfying to sing !!!
Trash Glam Baby - Obligatory COB inclusion alksdjfklas I almost went with She Said No instead but they really nailed that old-school rock sound with Trash Glam Baby and I absolutely adore it. I love the little references at the start of the song, I love the reprise at the end, the video absolutely fucks, this was everything I needed from 21st Century Rats and more!
Do The Rat / D.U.N. L.A.O.G.H.A.I.R.E. - Because I couldn’t pick just one, special shout-out to both Do The Rat and D.U.N. L.A.O.G.H.A.I.R.E. for being fantastic b-side tracks! I love that Bob and the rest of the band were having fun fooling around with their releases like this. I love all the puns in Do The Rat, and the little convo at the start of D.U.N. L.A.O.G.H.A.I.R.E. both makes me laugh and makes me a little emotional now that Garry’s gone.

*cocks gun* tell me bout those ocs
OKAY OKAY
I have sososo many ocs from over the years but my current favorites are my Saints for Girls characters, and they're also the ones I mention the most (followed by ColorBlind's characters but that's absolutely seeped in spoilers I can't really talk about them I can't even talk about my favorite from ColorBlind because her name is a spoiler.)
This is a link to a post about Sloane
The second most important character in the story is Max Cameron, Sloane's boyfriend. He's more rational and logical than Sloane, who often acts on impulse before really thinking (though she is smart in her own way). He's mixed but if you ask he'll tell you he's Taino because he doesn't give a fuck enough to explain. He picked up bracelet making (especially paracord ones) as a kid at summer camp and he makes them all the time. He doesn't like wearing a lot of bracelets, though, so he gives most of them to people. He always has a pocket knife and a lighter on him even when his outfit doesn't have pockets. He'll stash them in his binder if he has to. He doesn't know if God exists and he doesn't care to, he has his gods and he doesn't really care about the other ones. His favorite color is mustard yellow and he dyes his hair blue partially because it "has a nice contrast" to his yellow clothes. His favorite album is Punch by Autoheart.
There's also Blondie Withington (first to die, RIP Blondie). She's not blonde, as her name suggests, but a brunette. She bleached her hair a few times during her life, but she wasn't born a blonde so I guess she couldn't die one either, which is to say she died with unbleached hair. She was Sloane's best friend in second grade, but they just grew apart. They were the type of childhood best friends that remains in some part of you even after not talking for years, the type where you hold on to all the gifts, all the notes, all the friendship bracelets, because you just can't get rid of them. She was probably bisexual but she never properly figured that out. She would've been a tumblrina under the right circumstances. She's Christian in a "love thy neighbor" in her instagram bio kind of way. She was a swiftie who was really normal about the way Vigilante Shit is performed on the eras tour. always came to school with a dunkin drink.
And then there's Amelia and Amanda Erin, who are identical trans girl twins (the only other twins in Sloane + Steve's class). They're extremely close to each other, by nature of being twins and transitioning together, and their senses of identity are entangled. They changed their names to stay matching. Amelia is aromantic (heterosexual) and Amanda is asexual (homoromantic). They're both big tea enjoyers. They're always stealing clothes from each other and bickering and holding grudges over a game of monopoly, but they'd kill and die for each other. What happens with them is one of the most personal things to me in the story, and probably the most emotionally compelling. They're agnostic, but Amelia is vaguely spiritual.
Also, fun fact, all their last names (with the exception of Blondie's) were possible contenders for Sloane's first name (and even her last name was second choice for her first). There's also another guy in there somewhere but he's not worth the effort of typing his name.
Okay this has been my SFG oc post god okay goodbye

charles and mulcahy for the character asks :)
Thanks!! Charles I answered in another post
Mulcahy-
1: sexuality headcanon: I don’t think he has a libido but he thinks men are pretty.
2: otp: with Hawkeye. The way they confide in each other throughout the series, not feeling like they can do enough to help, yeeeeah
3: brotp: Klinger!! I wish they got to sing and play piano together more in the officers club, I love that so much. And more of Klinger attending Mulcahy’s services!!
4: notp: I don’t know if it’s a notp so much as just a general I don’t think he has a sexual relationship with Anybody.
5: first headcanon that pops into my head: ….autism
6: favorite line from this character: love thy neighbor or I’ll punch your lights out.
7: one way in which I relate to this character: he’s quiet and just doing his job, until you get to know him, and he will have a good time with you too.
8: thing that gives me second hand embarrassment about this character: nothing I can think of strongly embarrasses me? Some of his word choices are silly but he’s a silly guy!
9: cinnamon roll or problematic fave? Cinnamon roll I think.

It might not pop up on your “to-do” list for a while, but meeting people after your move is also a big part of your actual move. This is especially true if you have moved away from your city, state or country. A long-distance move can mean bold, new choices and that typically involves meeting new people. If you’re feeling rusty on your interpersonal skills, here are a few tips on how to meet new people after a move. Put Your Tech to Good Use A quick and easy way to meet new people is to make use of social media and online networking apps. As an example, Meetup is a popular app that helps local groups come together based on shared interests. Also, you could start a Meetup group for newbies around town. Chances are that you’re not the only freshly relocated citizen in your new community. There are also a variety of Facebook groups that feature community-based events or gatherings. A quick search for newcomers in your city is an easy way to find others who are also unpacking and looking to explore their new world. If you’re dealing with an international move, check out apps like Hello Talk. They are ideal for meeting locals while also trying to learn the language of your new land. Take Advantage of Your New Job Chances are, you or your spouse relocated to take advantage of a new job or career opportunity. If that’s the case, then your immediate work environment all but assures that new people will filter into your world. This could evolve into meeting other like-minded colleagues or friends of theirs. So, don’t be afraid of taking up that invitation to join co-workers for an after work drink or dinner. Explore the Local Nightlife This brings us to the next idea. Be sure to explore the local cafes, bars and dining establishments. In fact, a great way to strike up a conversation with strangers is to ask about favorite local dining spots. Natives are only too happy to share. If you were a trivia night nerd in your previous hometown, then you can be sure there’s a local trivia night or three happening in your new place. If you love Karaoke, that should be an easy find. Look for places that attract a regular crowd, mingle and blend in. Love Thy Neighbor These days the neighborhood welcoming committee might not be as active as it once was, but you can be sure that at least a few neighbors will make an effort to meet with you and get to know you. If you want to beat them to the punch then maybe consider hosting a housewarming or casual get-together. This is a simple and organic way to welcome those neighbors into your world. Unpack, Unwind and Give it Time If you’re a bit shy about meeting new people after the move, then just give it time. You will be busy settling in, so you won’t really need that distraction. However, when you’re ready, there’s obviously a whole new world of people out there waiting to meet the new person in you. Read the full article

When I was watching the OP theme song, I wasn't sure what to expect. Even in the opening scenes with the father and son, I did not foresee the plot.
Now, I have seen this plot before on YouTube in a low-budget (I think) movie where a commercial airplane rode into an aurora, and they found themselves directly over WWII Germany, except it's a boat in WWII Japan.
I'm not sure if it was said or not, but I think the man the 21st-century Navy recovered is the main character's dad. It doesn't make sense given the timeline and age, so it might be his grandfather. I don't remember who was who in the father-son scene when they saw a boat if it referred to the main character and his dad or the main character's dad and his dad (grandfather).
It's curious how a modern Japanese military person views his own country when he lives in WWII. While he knows that his background and status grant him more privileges than in his era, he still can't help but dislike the state of his country for enforcing martial law and colonizing Asia. Strangely, the man he saved shares similar sentiments and does not agree with his own superiors, yet he approaches it very calmly and not with hatred.
I also must save the guy MC saves reminds me of One Punch Man with a very round face despite being a mature adult. Combining his facial structure and his calm demeanor reminds me of Buddha; he gives a "love thy neighbor" vibe.
