alternatively: AU where everyone's alive and in their mid 20s and adam went the mechanic route instead of ivy league and he meets every member of the gangsey because they bring their car into the shop
noah: drove the mustang way past when it should have gotten its oil change done and is now experiencing Consequences. treats the mustang a lot like how people treat their ol' reliable accord that took them cross country back in '97. notably the back of the car is now papered in tacky bumper stickers some of which are for emo bands some of which are "this car climbed [x mountain]" some of which are advertisements for kitschy diners. adam finds him the most charming of the gang but regrettably that's only because everyone else is so fuckin
ronan: brings the BMW in looking like it went thru a wood chipper like "fix." adam is like buddy that is a hunk of scrap metal i cannot express enough how totaled it is how are you ALIVE & ronan is like nah. fix. & adam is like you are looking at Tens Of Thousands Of Dollars & ronan's like. ............your point?? ("you could buy ten of these models with the funds it would cost" "i like this one" adam thinks it must have some deep sentimental value but in actuality ronan's just been manic for 5 days and gotten real attached to the concept of cheating death by resurrecting a car) notably of the gangsey ronan is the one adam most vividly fantasizes about strangling to death with his bare hands, seconded only by henry
henry: brings his car into the shop while having gay histrionics about there being LIGHTS on the DASHBOARD & adam looks at it and is like. your rear right tire needs air i will just. do that for free dude we don't have a billing notation for idiot doesn't own a tire pump. he shows henry how to use the tire pump and henry is like but if this light comes on again i can just call AAA right. adam's like "you can drive fine with low tire pressure-" and henry's like "SCARY DASHBOARD LIGHTS" and adam's like. rubs temples. fine call AAA. later henry drives a half mile with the parking brake on and is only stopped when the strain blows out the engine. adam is like how did you not know. henry is like did you know some cars have a hand AND foot brake.... nature is amazing
gansey: having the camaro towed to the shop every other weekend because it's the camaro. the pig itself isn't notable beyond its canon characteristics (old, undead, classic) but gansey keeps, like, finding excuses to loiter around and watch adam work. adam comes to the pretty reasonable conclusion of "ok this guy is GAY gay and does NOT know how to hide it" and simultaneously is like "damn my code of not hooking up with clients." which is in place for extremely logical reasons but is a tragedy. eventually adam's like hey buddy you... got somewhere to be.....? and gansey's like could u tell me what u are doing i want to know thing 🥺 and adam revises his assessment to "ok this guy is WEIRD gay"
blue: comes in with her '85 civic every few months very defeatedly like "it's undrivable." the civic always has a different DIY base coat and original artistic mural but never stops looking like an '85 civic. & every single time adam will look at the engine and be like. have you had maintenance done since last time?? & then be like because a bunch of caps and wires in here are Clearly in the wrong spots. & blue will be like oh yeah my check engine light came on six weeks ago so i googled what an engine looks like and put duct tape on the bits that didn't look right. & adam will be like "DAMN MY CODE OF NOT HOOKING UP WITH CLIENTS"

this is so rogue but does anyone have the poetry template that went semi-viral on twitter a while back? it was designed for kids but someone gave it to their mother who has dementia and she wrote a really moving poem about her experience.

🇺🇸max mobility/permobile smart drive speed control dial wheelchair part recall, over 600 complaints and multiple serious injuries reported🇺🇸
+the responsible company being dodgy as fuck about those complaints and injuries
FDA publish date january 17, 2024
(picture from the once published and then taken down permobile page)
Reason for Voluntary Field Correction Max Mobility/Permobil has initiated a nationwide recall of the Speed Control Dial component used with the SmartDrive MX2+ Power Assist Device due to potential safety and performance concerns. Customers were notified by email on December 20, 2024. Max Mobility/Permobil has identified a material change with the printed circuit board assembly in the Speed Control Dial. The material change can cause performance issues such as:
Continued drive: The Speed Control Dial does not fully stop the drive unit when rotated to the zero position. Involuntary movement: Unintended activation of the SmartDrive motor without intentional user input while the Speed Control Dial is at the zero position and the dial light is flashing in standby mode. Loss of power: When the Speed Control Dial is rotated forward from the zero position, SmartDrive motor movement is initiated, and then the Speed Control Dial unexpectedly shuts down. Failure to start driving: When the dial is rotated forward from the zero position, no SmartDrive motor activation occurs.
As of December 12, 2024, we have received 646 complaints associated with the Speed Control Dial. Additionally, three serious injuries have been reported for this issue. The reported serious injuries include a fractured hip, fractured tibia, and fractured malleolus bone. Impacted products were manufactured and distributed through authorized dealers for purchase by consumers between August 17, 2023, and November 21, 2024.
...
Affected Product Max Mobility / Permobil Brand - MX2-3DCK/MX2-3DC - The frame-mounted Speed Control is easily mounted to a wheelchair to allow for close access and easy pressing. The Speed Control Dial can be used to deactivate the SmartDrive motor, as well as provide a means of actively powering the motor.
some emphasis mine. this is not a complete copy of the announcement and the FDA link has more information on what to do and where to go next. and chances are most customers have been reached by now. but this recall is weird enough that I want to highlight it anyway.
the speed control dial is getting recalled/voluntary field action-ed. but shortly after the FDA announcement went up, the announcement on the official website went down, which was previously hosted at:
https://www.permobil.com/en-us/media-center/press-releases-new/urgent-voluntary-medical-device-correction-smartdrive-speedcontrol-dial
totally removed, I watched it happen in real time. right after the FDA posted the recall announcement, I navigated the official website, went to that link, and then later refreshed it. and it has 404d ever since. what the fuck, why did they take it down minutes after the FDA announcement was posted? luckily I saved the page before they took it down. for the record most websites that list recalls/voluntary field actions do not take them down once the FDA announcement goes up. from what I have seen, at least.
it also did not mention the over six hundred complaints and multiple serious injuries when it was up. which was pretty shitty. the most it said was "Depending on the scenario, this could lead to serious injury." hell of a statement after knowing that it already 100% did.
I waited to post about this recall to see if permobil would reinstate any recall/"voluntary field action" page, but they did not to what I can see. let me know if I missed it, I guess. instead, the FDA announcement links to a permobil page about how to participate in the voluntary field action and get a new, safer dial.
the page about the voluntary field action also fails to mention the 600+ complaints and the multiple confirmed serious injuries. it says the part is being replaced due to "inconsistent performance issues". that is an interesting way of saying your broken part has caused the bones of its users to have inconsistent performance issues.
the FDA nationwide recall announcement page has instructions for how to replace the part.

It’s easy to forget JRR Tolkien was a fairly prolific academic translator with an interest in early medieval literature and philology. It’s so inspiring that he found time to write The Hobbit while fighting for his life over Beowulf.

in case you needed to hear it today:
it’s okay to use your turn signal when you’re changing lanes
it’s okay to use your turn signal when you’re taking an exit
it’s okay to use your turn signal when you plan on turning (can even be done sooner than 2 seconds before you’re about to turn)
you have a turn signal. in your vehicle. two of them in fact.
you are so brave and beautiful and smart and can do it. using your turn signal
