A very random thought about the Aemond X reader X Osferth having children.

Friends and family are very curious about who the father is and them not caring one bit: reader is with child and the two men are over the moon. Aemond, the over achiever, reading all he can about pregnancy, midwifery, fatherhood and puericulture: he is as ready as he is going to be, to raise this child better than his own father did with him. Osferth has long conversation with Beocca about his own issue with his dad, his fear of not being enough and of not knowing how to be a dad, let alone a good one; talking about all of this helps him immensely and he can't wait to meet his child.

When the kid is born (and this happens even if they have more along the way), everyone but them tries to guess who the father is, on looks only. Too bad the kid(s), look like the mother; she might as well conceived them on her own, because they have her eyes, her hair and her facial features and look nothing like Aemond or Osferth, even when they grow up: they are the carbon copy of their mother. This amuses the three parents immensely.

During the birth the midwife is surprised to see two men, one on each side of reader and wrongly thinks that one must be some sort of brother or family member. When she ask which one is the father, they proudly answer

"We are!" in unison.

The kid(s) have their mother's surname, since they can't have both Osferth and Aemond's. The kid(s) talk freely about having two dad's and this causes problems with bullies who pick on them. One day reader is summoned because the child was in a fight. The principal doesn't expect reader coming with two very pissed off men (during PTA meetings there's usually reader and one of the men, depending on who can come). Aemond is ready to incinerate the whole school: no one bullies his child. Osferth is slightly calmer, just because someone needs to keep their head on their shoulders. Reader is ready to throw hands, the school has underestimated this bully for too long. The principal says that the whole incident was caused by the bully saying the child has no father

"He is right" answers Osferth

"There's two of us" ends Aemond

Which leaves the principal speechless. When the man regains his voice, has the courage to say something about the child being punished for acting up; that's when all hell breaks loose and the conversation ends with the principal backtracking, after reader threatens to sue the school for what it's worth (Aemond is ready to buy the whole thing just to fire the principal).

The kid gets ice cream afterwards, for having the guts to stand up to bullies.

Reflection: Child. Care. Protect.

Back in the day, when baby boomers were in a rush to grow up, there was such a thing as a puericulture center in every town. I do not exactly know what that center was providing, but I do know that they took care of children’s concerns and fostered children’s welfare in some undefined way. The closest equivalent to that in our times might be the ubiquitous “child care center,” or more precisely, “daycare center.” I remember a certain Mrs. Egan in one such puericulture center near the old municipal building of Poblacion, Makati, right close to the Pasig River Crossing that ferried people from Poblacion, Makati to Hulo in Mandaluyong.

She was running a kindergarten school. But school was not the center’s only concern. There were also pediatric doctors providing medical care to children. The few lines in today’s Gospel appear to focus on the child as centerpiece. “Whoever receives this child in My name receives me. Whoever receives Me receives the one who sent Me.” But it is the next line that should interest you and me today. It is the line that has to do with “greatness.”

Yesterday, we spoke about pride. Pride takes so many forms and guises, and one of them is to feel contempt for outsiders who do not belong to a group of privileged few. John was taking issue with someone who was sending out demons in Christ’s name, but in his words, he should be prevented, for “he does not  follow us.” He does not belong. There was little love lost between John and that outsider. That was basically a story of rejection.

Today, the Lord gives a concrete and palpable lesson on acceptance, caring, humility, and greatness. He called a child over and put the child beside Him. Humility is being childlike. Greatness is being humble. And being humble carries with it the commitment to caring and protecting a vulnerable child. “For the one who is least among you all, this one is great.”

O Holy Infant Jesus, Divine Child, lead us to true greatness!
