Reflection: Child. Care. Protect.

Back in the day, when baby boomers were in a rush to grow up, there was such a thing as a puericulture center in every town. I do not exactly know what that center was providing, but I do know that they took care of children’s concerns and fostered children’s welfare in some undefined way. The closest equivalent to that in our times might be the ubiquitous “child care center,” or more precisely, “daycare center.” I remember a certain Mrs. Egan in one such puericulture center near the old municipal building of Poblacion, Makati, right close to the Pasig River Crossing that ferried people from Poblacion, Makati to Hulo in Mandaluyong.

She was running a kindergarten school. But school was not the center’s only concern. There were also pediatric doctors providing medical care to children. The few lines in today’s Gospel appear to focus on the child as centerpiece. “Whoever receives this child in My name receives me. Whoever receives Me receives the one who sent Me.” But it is the next line that should interest you and me today. It is the line that has to do with “greatness.”

Yesterday, we spoke about pride. Pride takes so many forms and guises, and one of them is to feel contempt for outsiders who do not belong to a group of privileged few. John was taking issue with someone who was sending out demons in Christ’s name, but in his words, he should be prevented, for “he does not  follow us.” He does not belong. There was little love lost between John and that outsider. That was basically a story of rejection.

Today, the Lord gives a concrete and palpable lesson on acceptance, caring, humility, and greatness. He called a child over and put the child beside Him. Humility is being childlike. Greatness is being humble. And being humble carries with it the commitment to caring and protecting a vulnerable child. “For the one who is least among you all, this one is great.”

O Holy Infant Jesus, Divine Child, lead us to true greatness!
