Rules:
Hey there! Welcome to the NPR "Show"Down.
Poll Basics:
Brackets will be randomly seeded, as I do not have a reliable measure of how popular each show is.
This tournament includes NPR-Distributed Shows that aren't necessarily made *BY* NPR
Polls are queued and will last one week each.
Propaganda:
I love propaganda! Please submit it to my Ask Box or tag me in posts about it!
Propaganda is ongoing. If you submit some BEFORE a poll airs, I will put it on the poll itself. Afterwards, it will be kept as an ASK.
You can submit both Offensive and Defensive Propaganda about shows.
I trust that you all understand that this objectively silly and will not get legitimately get angry about radio programs.
However, this is a civil debate forum and Harassment, hateful, and otherwise outright distasteful asks will be ignored.
Submissions:
All National NPR and APM/NPR-Distributed shows will be included, but please submit your own local picks (Or else you're gonna see a VERY uneven amount of KQED shows). These will be added to the list anonymously and any propaganda you want to include will be included in the poll.
Any show you submit must be distributed through at least 1 local public radio station.
All shows must have some sort of archived internet presence so that I, and possible poll voters, can give it a listen on-demand.
Submissions are Due December 1st!

My Political Philosophy
Society
For a functional Republic, we need the people to know the truth.
If the people are educated on the world, bad actors cannot abuse popular lack of knowledge to advertise extremist policy.
I want MASSIVE investments in public education and media, and a COMPLETE restructuring of the education system.
Stop forcing children, who need to go out and explore the world to mature, to slave away eight hours of five weekdays learning things they aren't interested in.
Educate children on natural sciences and sociopolitics in a more friendly, decentralized atmosphere which isn't a relic of the 1800s.
Do not stop education at age eighteen and expect the currently taught knowledge to serve the people for decades to come.
Make continually updated, digitalized education a constantly available commodity for all citizens, free of charge.
All cititens MUST be free and have the same rights.
Via better education on the fundamental realities of humanity, such reforms will also be met with less opposition from regressives who believe groups such as the LGBTQ+ community to be evil.
TOTAL Secularism!
If you want to dedicate your life to spreading the idea that the world exists on a giant's ballsack, that's fine, but pay for it yourself.
Economy and Logistics
IF a Socialist Utopia is possible, I want it.
But it must be achieved through reform, not through revolution.
Until that day, I will continue to work toward it as a Liberal.
For freedom, peace and prosperity, one needs a strong economy, and for that, one needs Industrialization 3.0.
I want a nationalist approach to industry;
Stop outsourcing the people's work for profit. Use modern technology to produce goods and services in the country, and have that technology designed, maintained and improved by an educated populace which has emerged from the fusion of proletariat and academia.
A founding pillar of a strong economy is a good logistics network.
It is amazing how many problems can be solved by trains if they are built and maintained properly.
Expand and modernize the railway network and BAN CARS FROM CITIES!
You'll be amazed by how much space is freed up if we do that. All those parking spots and roads, gone in favor of freely navigable public spaces, as well as living and working spaces. We can put trees everywhere in the city centers to improve air quality!
We can make reliable, far-reaching public transportation that is free for citizens, based on trains, as well as drones for delivery.
Again, this will be powered by our educated citizens and modern technology.
Immigration
Uproot the problem.
Immigration is not the problem, but a symptom of a far more deeply rooted problem.
Do you believe people WANT to travel across half the world in a dangerous refugee boat??
No, but they have no other choice because the conditions in their home countries are unworthy of humans!
We need an aggressively moralist foreign policy that uses a part of our economic product to fund massive, systemic improvements and reforms in the nations where the most migrants come from, which happen to be the poorest, most crisis-plagued ones.
Don't just deliver medicine and bottled water to a desert village. Deliver tools and teach the people how to make medicine and build water wells.
This is an investment into the future. This creates positive relationships between our country and the countries we help grow, meaning mutually beneficial ties with those countries when they've grown to stand on their own feet. Then, their people also won't need to flee anymore.
Military and Foreign Policy
Recent developments have shown that a unilateral desire for peace is not enough to assure it.
Insane imperialists and self-righteous terrorists, corrupting words of peace, justice and goodness to justify their selfish aggression, will wage war on whomever they think they can, regardless of if the victim has any desire for war.
I do not desire war.
But to prevent us from having war unleashed upon us, we need to make it clear to the aforementioned that they do not want war with us, due to the violent consequences we would unleash. For that, and to stop those imperialists and terrorists who, in service of their selfish motives, counter our foreign policy of helping the less privileged nations, we need a strong military which is powered by educated decision-makers and soldiers who are also motivated by our country's values, to use cutting-edge, industrially homemade technology and weapons in order to defend our people and enforce our help for others against those who wish to destroy both.
As mentioned before, the allies we make via our investment in the poorest nations will definetly help us in that regard.
Environment and Energy
It ties back into the education problem.
Since the 1950s, nuclear power has provided a clean, safe means of producing absurd amounts of energy, but systemic propaganda by the fossil fuel industry, the same people who greenwash their agenda with insincere promises about a transition to renewable energies, of which they know those cannot cover the energy demands on their own, has made people fear nuclear energy like the devil.
All the problems about reactor meltdowns, radiation safety and waste products have already been solved and have generally been overstated by the fossil fuel lobby. People have also taken to fearing all forms of nuclear energy due to the prospect of annihilation via its weaponized form, nuclear weapons.
But a form of energy that is so powerful that it can destroy the world when weaponized, can also be used by good people to save the world. Evil people will use all means at their disposal anyway. It's the good people who need to stop limiting themselves.
Factually, atomic energy is an extremely complex topic that requires immense education to be understood.
Hence it being so easy for the fossil fuel lobby to fearmonger against it, due to the popular lack of knowledge about it.
As said before, we need more public media and education, which would also alleviate the people's fears of a form of energy which, due to its power, we are OBLIGATED to use for good.
With clean, reliable energy that can supply even an exponentially growing people and economy, we can also use more products of advanced technology and science to fix environmental damages and preserve nature, so that we can exist in harmony with it.

NPR has abandoned Twitter. More news organizations known for factual content should.
NPR will no longer post fresh content to its 52 official Twitter feeds, becoming the first major news organization to go silent on the social media platform. In explaining its decision, NPR cited Twitter's decision to first label the network "state-affiliated media," the same term it uses for propaganda outlets in Russia, China and other autocratic countries.
The decision by Twitter last week took the public radio network off guard. When queried by NPR tech reporter Bobby Allyn, Twitter owner Elon Musk asked how NPR functioned. Musk allowed that he might have gotten it wrong.
Twitter then revised its label on NPR's account to "government-funded media." The news organization says that is inaccurate and misleading, given that NPR is a private, nonprofit company with editorial independence. It receives less than 1 percent of its $300 million annual budget from the federally funded Corporation for Public Broadcasting.
By going silent on Twitter, NPR's chief executive says the network is protecting its credibility and its ability to produce journalism without "a shadow of negativity."
Elon Musk bought Twitter to troll people either personally or indirectly by allowing Nazis, anti-vaxxers, MAGA zombies, Putinists, and religious fanatics he unbanned to do so for him. As Steve Bannon might put it, Musk flooded the zone with shit. Musk and the far right hate NPR because it’s part of the media plumbing which removes their shit.
His idiocy has been costing him. Under him the value of the company has dropped from $44 billion to $20 billion because advertisers don’t wish to be associated with the crackpots and hatemongers he’s unleashed.

[ ... ]
In a BBC interview posted online Wednesday, Musk suggested he may further change the label to "publicly funded." His words did not sway NPR's decision makers. Even if Twitter were to drop the designation altogether, Lansing says the network will not immediately return to the platform.
"At this point I have lost my faith in the decision-making at Twitter," he says. "I would need some time to understand whether Twitter can be trusted again."
[ ... ]
NPR is instituting a "two-week grace period" so the staff who run the Twitter accounts can revise their social-media strategies. Lansing says individual NPR journalists and staffers can decide for themselves whether to continue using Twitter.
Musk is a libertarian pissant. That’s a common invasive species in Silicon Valley. He uses the technology and digital infrastructure originally financed and developed by the US government and universities since the 1960s and then claims he got filthy rich totally without public help. 🙄
With all those thousands of tech workers fired from Twitter and other digital companies over the past few months, some of them ought to be working on a realistic alternative to Twitter. We’re still waiting, guys and gals!
As for NPR, one platform they could utilize is Tumblr. They do have an account here but mysteriously stopped posting at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.
Tumblr media
Contact your local NPR station or their Washington HQ and urge them to return here.
This is from NPR’s contact page...

Tumblr management would do better trying to lure the more substantive Twitter users here than spending on Tumblr Live. If they attract (or re-interest) users like NPR then ad dollars not going to Twitter could end up here.

$5 Million in State Funding Available to Ethnic Media Groups for Hate Crime Outreach
[Sacramento, Calif.] — Grants totaling $5 million are available through the California State Library for ethnic media outlets serving communities historically vulnerable to hate crimes and incidents.
The purpose of the grants is to increase public awareness of the California Department of Social Services' Stop the Hate Program. The Stop the Hate Program provides support and services to survivors of hate crimes and incidents and their families.
The grants can be used to pay for reporters, fellowships, and internships at ethnic media outlets, news briefings and roundtables, digital and social media content, community gatherings and partnerships with grassroots organizations and Community Based Organizations. Grant awards range from $40,000 to $400,000.
Past grantees include media outlets and organizations serving California’s Asian American and Pacific Islander, Latino, Black, Native American and LGBTQ+ communities. Examples of projects being conducted by current grantees can be found on the State Library website.
“California’s diversity is our superpower,” said Greg Lucas, California’s State Librarian. “Helping local media outlets ‘Stop the Hate’ strengthens all of our communities.”
According to the California Department of Justice’s 2021 Hate Crime in California Report, hate crime events increased 32.6% from 1,330 in 2020 to 1,763 in 2021.
A total of $15 million in grants for ethnic media outlets was included in the Asian and Pacific Islander Equity Budget of 2021, a three-year investment of $166.5 million to fund critical resources and services in response to the sharp rise in hate incidents and hate crimes.
This is the second round of funding for ethnic media outlets. In May 2022, the California State Library awarded nearly $6 million in grants to 50 ethnic media outlets and collaboratives. A complete list of last year’s grantees can be found in the May 2022 press release.
For more information, visit the Ethnic Media Outreach Grants page on our website. Applications are due by 5:00 PM PST on Monday, March 14, 2023.

Streaming and decreased funding of public television has really destroyed the idea of classic media. Media that everyone watches with their family simply because it’s on, building a nostalgic universal experience. The fact that Charlie Brown specials are behind an Apple+ paywall boils my blood like nothing else.

Just read The Strange Case of Harley and Harleen and my god I needed a little bit of positive plurality in my life this week.
The way Pam and Harl's relationship adapts to accept the Harley/Harleen split makes my heart swell.
The way Pam sees the difference between her girlfriends.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And assures her that she accepts and loves all sides of her.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And does what she can to accommodate Harleen's memory holes.
Tumblr media
The core relationship of this book is just so sweet and positive in accepting things as they are without judgment or pushing. Just acceptance and love.
And after finding that in our own life, I know what a powerfully positive thing it can be.
But the Harley/Harleen relationship is well handled too. There's friction and denial at the start but the two develop and trust one another by the end and Harley takes a seat as my favorite kind of character, the morally ambiguous protector.
I love the way Harley's protectiveness of Harleen is depicted and how she tries so hard to keep her from interacting with the criminal underworld of Gotham.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's just saccharine and kind.
Highly recommend the book to anyone who just wants soft and kind plurality vibes. Heaven knows the majority of the fiction involving split personalities are flooded with angst and darkness and though this book contains a few dark plot beats like DV it never feels painful or sorrow inducing.
I'm so happy I read it.

NPR senior business editor Uri Berliner had written an article criticizing the people who work with him. His article alleged that his colleagues are unanimously progressive and publish progressive stories without any debate—a failure of “viewpoint diversity.” What did I make of that? Having been asked, I answered: my colleague’s article was filled with errors and omissions. And having given my opinion in public, it’s fair that I should show my work in this space, where I often discuss NPR and journalism more broadly. Nothing I say here is personal; it’s about the journalism. I’ve already told Uri much of what I am telling you, and I have taken his responses seriously. He told me he loves NPR and wants to make it better.

I work in public media. The thing that kept Sesame Street afloat for years were home media sales. The HBO deal sucked but it was the only reason it kept going once dvd sales dried up. If you want to support Sesame Street as a going concern you have to pay for it. You have to give money to public media and you have to buy physical releases. And you have to do this regularly. Give to National and local public media outlets, especially local. Make your values known. By virtue of being public they will be a lot more responsive than other companies.
babe. I know we’re all going thru a lot rn but I just wanna give u the heads up that sesame streets future is in jeopardy. hbo has chosen not to renew it for new episodes (a series that has been going since 1969) and the residents of 123 Sesame Street no longer have a home :(

Mickey Mouse's entry into the public domain comes with significant caveats. While the Mickey Mouse who appears in Steamboat Willie (and other media published in 1928 or earlier) is free to use, there's established precedent that specific elements of a character which appear exclusively in later works which still fall under copyright may be protected, if sufficiently distinctive.
(This is the basis of, e.g., the infamous "Sherlock Holmes can't respect women" lawsuit: the Doyle estate, which at the time owned only a tiny handful of the latest-written stories, the others having already fallen into the public domain, argued that specific personality traits which Holmes exhibits only in those later stories are sufficiently distinctive as to be the valid subject of an infringement claim.)
With respect to various elements of Mickey's visual design, such as his red shorts and signature gloves, the matter is clear: just don't use those for another few years. However, there's another thing Mickey's public domain iterations don't exhibit: speech.
The present consensus among copyright scholars seems to be that "a character speaking" is not sufficiently distinctive as to qualify for protection, but the vocal characterisation with which Mickey Mouse is famously associated may so qualify. So, if you want to be scrupulously safe, you can have him talk, but not in that exact specific voice.
Which raises a fun question: what voice would you give him? Wrong answers only.

Coining a phrase: Period atypical homophobia.
Definition: When the writer of a piece of historical fiction hasn't really bothered to research how gay people existed in a period of time or what terms would have been used to discuss homosexuality positively or negatively. So instead they put the most modern, likely religious terms into the mouth of a historical character to establish that a character is homophobic.
e.g. Having every Victorian character be a religious homophobe instead of having them talk about "public decency" and "discretion"
