Don't See Yourself As a Cuckoo
I started reading Chica Umino's March Comes In Like a Lion after years of hearing about its great outlook on characters dealing with a variety of emotional issues. In particular, its main character, Rei Kiriyama and his struggles to come to terms with his past involving a surrogate parental figure who raised him after his family died, but ignored their own kids for the sake of Rei's future.
I see this first hand near the end of the 1st volume when Rei reminisces about the past and how he got into shogi.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's scary that I felt the same as Rei about 13 years ago. I remember one time where I felt like I was dragging my family down a hell hole when we moved into a new living situation. I was dealing with so much uncertainty and didn't know how to handle it. I think at the time, we had limited resources. I felt that I was selfish because I wanted to move to a better place badly over everyone else's preferences, but my sister reminded me that I wasn't the only one who wanted out. She even said my thinking was warped. I think I was just so afraid of hurting my family and felt they had to do so much for my depression. I wanted them to stop helping me. I felt like a cuckoo despite not actually being a cuckoo.
When I look back at that time now, I realized that I was facing a new situation that I was overreacting to. It's fine to react in ways that make you fearful, but there's a point where it affects your relationships in not-so-healthy ways. You have to be realistic and trust in the people around you despite what your inner critic says.
Rei's quote about being a bird and free of emotional pain reminded me of my experiences with birds. I used to have a pet African finch and felt that he had it much easier than me. He got to eat, sing, fly around, sleep, poop, etc. And then I remember my finch lived in a cage and was taken care of by creatures (i.e. human beings) that he can't exactly communicate with. There's no freedom for him here. And even if my finch was free and roaming, he would have to deal with how vicious wild birds are due to being domesticated. My finch died in 2019 after 11 years of raising him and while I do think he lived a long life for his kind, I have to be careful in saying he lived a good life.
After my finch died, I later discovered an avian center that housed birds of all kinds that were on display while walking on a lunch break from work. There were a variety of them living in a special housing display for everyone to see. All of them were either injured, old, and/or couldn't be raised by regular folks. I had a lot of joy looking at those birds and would walk by to see them almost all the time. Some of them did die over time, but the birds reminded me how important it is to recognize that we deserve people to care for us when life deals us a terrible hand. I still stop by the avian center bird display because all the birds there are precious to me.
I sometimes wished I was a bird because it sucks being sad a good amount. It sucks to cry when you least expect it. And then I think about what that actually will entail. I don't want to anthropomorphize animals because it's hard to compare.
The grand truth is that everyone and everything (humans/animals/plants) goes through pain in some fashion. We decay and wither from time to time. That's how life works. Obviously, some pain isn't worth it. But I feel that we have to appreciate to a certain degree how we learn who we really are through our rough experiences. They make us value what's important in our lives. Despite whatever gaslighting we may get, we can get through the pain and/or live with it in healthy ways.
I will say that one thing I notice about birds is that they're usually together a lot. During the 1st year of COVID, I saw a family of mourning doves living in the back of my place for a short time. It was one of the cutest things I ever saw. The parents would fly away to look for food, while the kids parked themselves at their temporary home. I don't know how they're doing now, but I like to think that they're doing okay out there. Whenever I see families of mourning doves, I think of that one family.
Maybe a part of me still wants to be a bird - soaring into the air and being out in nature, free of modern life constraints. The real cuckoo isn't me; it's those who want us to ignore the interdependence of all things that truly makes human beings feel that they matter.
If you ever feel like you're a cuckoo, it's not your fault. You're a person who deserves the unconditional foundation to live a life full of love to process the pain you unfortunately had to deal with.
Much like what the manga seems to entail, springtime is a time to renew yourself with others around, whether human or animal, after the harshness of winter.

Ren has a special pillow set up for him in the window of Koujaku's hair salon that he sits in when Aoba comes to hang out during work hours. Koujaku joked that it's because having a cute, fluffy dog gets people's attention and is good for buisness, but honestly, he just likes having Ren around when he works. He has such a soothing aura that it allows Koujaku to relax and work better. Plus, he just likes having Ren nearby in general- it's comforting. There are small steps attached to the window so that Ren could get up and down whenever he wants without having to jump, but Koujaku usually just takes him down/puts him up whenever he notices that Ren wants to move, just so that he wouldn't have to navigate the steps with his short little paws.
Beni sometimes preens Aoba's hair. He seems to have his own idea on how it should all look, and nobody else can figure out what rules is he using and what result is he trying to accomplish. At first, Aoba was a bit startled by it, unused to this kind of touch to his hair, but he quickly got used to it, since it didn't really hurt, and he knew that Beni was being gentle. When he's done, Aoba's hair usually looks exactly the same, just messier. Beni is, however, always proud of his work, and thinks that Aoba "finally looks decent" and that he has to look good to represent Koujaku and his work. Aoba mostly just finds it cute- now he finds the feeling of Beni rustling through his hair comforting: It became their small ritual.

I like it when people sit down to get to know me, and they’ll ask a question, and they realize that I know WAY too much about EVERYTHING.
“Oh- you’ve eaten raw horse?”
“Yeah it gave me E-Coli”
“What’s E-coli?”
*EXPLAINS THE ENTIRETY OF HOW YOUR BODY REACTA AND WHERE IT COMES FROM AND HOW IT WORKS*
“W-wow you know a lot about that- what else have you eaten that’s weird?”
“Uni, which- actually do you know the only edible part of a sea urchin is: *MORE EXTREMELY RANDOM INFO*”
“That’s crazy! Ew- I don’t think I’ve eaten weird things before.”
“Did you know in Japan they eat live octopuses? They started just doing the little ones that fit in your mouth but now they are FULLY eating ones that fight back- which is neat because even after you bite a limb off they- *INFO ON MARINE LIFE SYNAPSES AND THAT OCTOPUS TENTACLES SUCTION IS STRONG ENOUGH TO LEAVE A HICKEY*”
“How do you know this??”
“Uhhh- a Chuckle sandwich podcast, and a lot of experience fishing with my dad, that led to more research. ALSO DID YOU KNOW THAT DOLPHINS FEEL LIKE WET HOTDOGS??? OH AND WAIT TILL YOU HEAR ABOUT THE WAY THEY HALF SLEEP WITH THEIR BRA-“
I talked for an hour.
The way I acquired this completely random and oddly specific/complicated information was by NO NORMAL MEANS.
People have started ASKING me questions about random stuff because they KNOW I’ll know SOMETHING about it
IS THIS MY SUPERPOWER? I MEAN ITS SÚPER ANNOYING TO OTHERS BUT IM SO SMART AND SO DUMB AT THE SAME TIME??? LOL????

I feel like batfam fans misunderstand the term parentification a lot and conflate it with Dick filling a parental role for his siblings, which might be part of the “oldest daughter syndrome” that’s so often pinned on him but that isn’t what parentification actually means
If I say that Dick Grayson was parentified, then that isn’t referring to him taking care of his siblings, it refers to the way Bruce treated him. As someone capable of taking care of his emotional needs and not as the child in need of care in the relationship
Parentification is a term that’s been around for decades, and while having to care for younger siblings might be a part of the definition, it focuses mostly on the role reversal of the parent-child dynamic. I’m not going to get into the psychology of it but being parentified has very little to do with if he actually acted as a parent for his siblings and everything to do with if he acted as a parent for Bruce
This is honestly why I prefer the term spouseification, which is less ambiguous than the term parentification and I feel accurately describes their “equal” relationship and the type of emotional abuse that Dick went through
Also from what I’ve read, Dick doesn’t act as a parental figure for any of his siblings except for Damian. While he might have given extra emotional support to Tim due to Bruce being Bruce, Dick still fits solidly into an older brother role. I’m not even going to touch on Dick’s relationship with Jason which is too weak to even be considered fraternal never mind parental

hey do birds stim? I saw a video of a crow hopping up and down and the question came to my mind.
I’m not sure how to answer this accurately; birds do behavior that we can’t identify as ‘purposeful’, like things just for fun, so I guess in a sense they could?

My brother's ex-fiancee didn't think that penguins were birds. I couldn't believe it when she said that.
aha! here we get to another pitfall of human psychology!
when we put things into mental groups, like the group of "bird", we tend to have an archetype for that group in our brain. For birds, that's usually a songbird - something like a robin or a sparrow, maybe a pigeon. Small, flighted, perches on things. Things that fall outside of that archetype, if you're not familiar with them, don't compute - and we refuse to allow them into the grouping.
This is why the grouping thing is such a problem - our archetypes can never actually capture the diversity of a group we perceive, even if that group is a real thing. This is why stereotypes exist. This is why people still think of dinosaurs as lizards, because their archetype for dinosaur resembles a lizard more than a bird (even if it shouldn't). And this is why some people will refuse to believe that penguins or ostriches are birds.
we have to stop thinking that our brains are good at describing nature, because clearly, they are not.

Vivarium (2019)
----
This is an example of brood parasitism. A parasitic bird lays its eggs in the nests of other species. The parasitic chick often hatches earlier, grows faster, and out-competes the host's own chicks, sometimes even ejecting them from the nest.
The host parents unknowingly raise the parasitic chick, investing resources into it.

Thoughts That Go Whump in the Night for Rafal
Note: I tried to find as many torture methods as I could that involved the bird motif. Do not search for these if you do not want visual representations of them.
Caught in a snare trap like a dumb woodcock à la Hamlet.
Eyes plucked out by doves à la "Cinderella."
Bird-who-was-formerly-a-ghost-boy-now-reincarnated drops a millstone onto his head à la "The Juniper Tree."
Transformed into a bird and stabbed by pins on a windowsill upon landing à la "The Canary Prince."
Chased by geese in the park.
Hitchcock-style bird attacks.
Viking blood eagle execution method. (When the rib cage was broken and opened, the lungs allegedly fluttered like "wings.")
Gibbeted in a cage.
Cucking and ducking stool.
A mock-Icarus scenario, flying too close to the sun and overheating, perhaps afflicted by the drip of burning wax.
Tarred and feathered à la American Revolution.
Bound to a rock to have his liver feasted on by an eagle everyday à la Prometheus.
Pau de arara or "parrot's perch," a stress position. (Bird sellers use it for transporting birds.)
White torture. (A form of psychological torture and sensory deprivation—everything in sight is white. Would be halfway decent camouflage, actually.)
The whirligig. (It has a whimsical name, yet it involves a spinning cage.)
Strappado or "pigeon torture."
Live burial. (Self-explanatory. Fits the vibes of TLEA.)
Second Circle of Hell. (Whipped around in an endless cyclone, representing Rafal's wind motif. That motif is actually more present in the main series than in the prequels and it featured in an OTK flashback.)
Seventh Circle of Hell. (Preyed on by harpies.)
Stymphalian birds. (Sorry to the Stymphs, but they were originally man-eating in classical mythology.)
I feel like all this shouldn't need a disclaimer, but obviously, don't try any of this at home, not that anyone could in most cases. These ideas are for strictly fictional purposes.
Also, suppose Vulcan could've used any of these? I have another post with less graphic mentions of torture here.

For ONCE I want a movie where the main character and their companion(s) choose to be selfish, and do the wrong thing for each other instead of sacrificing or hurting each other for the greater good. I want them to acknowledge what they're doing is fucked up, and that they feel guilt over it, but they still choose each other even if it means causing hell for all others. I want to see a movie where the expected "good, and noble" people do the opposite because they'd rather see the world burn than hurt each other. I just want a movie where what's expected to happen doesn't happen, and they're selfish for themselves, and whom they love. I want to see that kind of love on screen for once as fucked as it is. I've seen it happen in books, but I want to SEE it on screen.
Edit:
I want to add that I'm talking about wanting to see BOTH of them simultaneously decide it. Not when one person says fuck the world, and the other doesn't so it creates an issue, and they end up fighting over it because one is having difficulty moving on from it. I want them to be the main characters, I want them both to decide it, I want to see both of them live, essentially 'win', as happily as they can with each other while the world ends, even when the time is ticking for them as well. I don't want to see their demise. I just want to see them choose each other selfishly, and live till the very end before the screen fades into black.
