Every time something shitty happens to a fictional guy on their birthday I'm like. Oh god. Oh his BIRTHDAY!?

Before my friend came to visit, I joked that if she spoke Taiwanese she could make friends on her smoke breaks with my elderly downstairs neighbor, whose loud Hokkien conversations and cigarette fumes drifting in my window at odd hours had always caused me naught but aggravation and deterred me from making any attempt to socialise with him myself. Well. Apparently the gift (or curse) of prophecy was upon me in that moment, and the bond of the smoker transcends age, race, and language. A few nights ago while I was sitting with her and another friend he came out, scolded her in broken Mandarin for picking the expensive brand of cigarettes, and started dispensing shots of Kaoliang. Last night their friendship was further cemented, she texted me, by a nearby student who had been enlisted as a translator for them to discuss our entire travel itinerary, which he'd remembered in detail. This morning he yelled me over on the street outside the breakfast shop, gave me a banana, and told me to water his plants three times a day while he's on vacation! This is a bit too much, too fast. But he's not wrong, if anyone is dedicated to timely plant-watering it's me and not my friend on the next floor up.
