She was just 19....
[Trigger Warning: Sexual assault]
I know I’m late on this but I thought I’d write about Oluwatoyin "Toyin" Salau’s murder. Please read on to learn more about this gorgeous Woman.

This intelligent Woman was, and still is, an inspiration. She taught herself to sew, paint, and design clothes. She was honest and wanted to bring people together. She encouraged people to unite against police brutality. She also loved to protest.
Toyin spoke at a protest for Tony McDade and said,
"At the end of the day, I cannot take my fucking skin color off," --"Everywhere I fucking go, I am profiled whether I like it or not... So guess what? I'm gonna die by it. I'm going to die by my fucking skin. You cannot take my fucking blackness away from me."
I feel such a connection to Toyin. I’m also 19. I also love all forms of art. I love to protest.
Her death makes me want to do more. Protest more, voice my opinions more, and be proud of my brown skin. She’s such an inspiration and I thought more people should know about her.
I also want to discuss the fact that she was sexually assaulted before her death. Black Women are often forgotten in general but especially in terms of violence. I myself have been sexually assaulted.
For every black woman who reports rape, at least 15 black women do not report.
1 in 4 black girls will be sexually abused before the age of 18.
1 in 5 black women are survivors of rape.
35% of black women experienced some form of contact sexual violence during their lifetime.
40% - 60% of black women report being subjected to coercive sexual contact by age 18.
17% of black women experienced sexual violence other than rape by an intimate partner during their lifetime.
The Institute for Women’s Policy Research reports that:
More than 20% of Black Women are raped during their lifetimes — a higher share than among women overall.
Black Women were 2.5 times more likely to be murdered by men than their White counterparts. And, more than 9 in 10 black female victims knew their killers.
Black Women also experience significantly higher rates of psychological abuse — including humiliation, insults, name-calling and coercive control — than do women over all.

-------
People don’t think about Black Women in a different light than the strong Black Beyonce, sassy Rihanna, or any other box.
Black Women are complex, sexual, beautiful, flawed, strong, vulnerable. Our hearts break, we laugh at memes, we dance while cooking, we listen to music, we breathe...until we can’t anymore.
We are multifaceted just like any other human being.
Thanks for reading this far.
Now check in on your Black Sisters! Just be there with them during this horrendous time in history. You don’t have to understand our experience fully, just please show love and support.
Rest in Power Toyin.

I know for some people it may not seemed very important, interesting, just some small country in the east of Europe, but people should know what happpens there. Incredible Belarus people are trying to overthrow their crazy dictator, they use peaceful protest, but that's what they get. Belarus people deserve life in a civilized progressive country with a normal democracy, and not with a tyrant headed by and subordinate to him groups of security forces.
Жыве Беларусь.

If you are taking to the streets tonight, please protect yourself as much as is possible. Wear a mask, wear good shoes, and have an exit plan if it no longer feels ok to be there.
Remember that the police are not your friends and they will not protect you. They are rioting too.
If you are not going to the protests, you can still help:
Most metropolitan areas have set up a mutual aid bail fund. Give them money.
Provide jail support (and court support when it's time). Go to the jails with food and water, cash for taxis or the ability to Uber folks, a phone people can use to make a call, disposable masks, painkillers like tylenol and ibuprofen, tampons...all the things people are denied in jail and all the things they will need directly after.
Contact your local Black Lives Matter chapter and ask how you can help--not tell them how you want to help, but ask what they need.
Call your elected officials and ask them to come out in support of the protests and to condemn violent police responses.
Call police commissioners in cities where police violence has taken over and ask them why they are tacitly supporting terrorist behavior. Demand that they order their officers to stand down.
Call police unions and demand the same things.
This is only a start; there is lots more to do.
If your religious leader or religious authority is not speaking in support of the systematically oppressed or says they are sitting this out, hold them accountable. This uprising is holy work, and our spiritual leaders must lead.
There is a lot of work to be done. Remember that the humanity of those who have suffered is more important than corporations, inanimate objects, and a racist police force.
Be blessed and know that your action--big or small--is seen and counted.

National guard massing outside Milwaukee (oak creek). Saw a few humvees with what looked like mounted guns, jeeps, and at least one city bus. Drove around to get pictures but they'd already left. Stay safe everyone.

i know my activity on here has been really spotty lately guys, and i’m really sorry for how inconsistent i am!
and since i’ve been getting asks about it:
yes, i support BLM and have been doing everything i can in my personal life in order to support the movement.
but tumblr has historically been the place i go to in order to avoid burnout when it comes to highly stressful situations, and because that’s become effectively impossible in regards to the 2020 protests, i’ve been spending more time using fanfics and podcasts to de-stress instead.
anyways, this isn’t me complaining or anything, just a quick explanation for why you’re not seeing me on your dash as often in the past few weeks. i’ll try to be a little more active for anyone else who, like me, is using to tumblr to de-stress and so i can bring a little levity to everyone’s days <3 as usual, most of my stuff is still going to be fandom, but anything else is going to be tagged as both #blm and #protests2020

when halsey said, “i’m white-passing its not my place to say ‘we’ its my place to help.i am pain for my family, but nobody is gonna kill me based on my skin colour”...i felt that so hard as a white-passing Aboriginal person. she’s such an incredible example to every poc with privilege using it to directly help. and to everyone using their privilege to directly help with protests and whatever way you can, thank you.

Sorry, could you tag your posts related to the protests and what's going on in the US? The big amount of streaming of the topic has become a bit overwhelming and so much negativity and violence is becoming bad for my mental health, but I don't want to unfollow you. Thanks in advance!
No need to apologize!! I should've tagged this all appropriately in the first place. All my posts pertaining to the protests and the current situation will be tagged as #protests2020 from now on.

reminder to my fellow white gays that we cannot ignore the protests just because it's pride and that's fun. the first pride as we know it today, 51 years ago, was a riot in response to police brutality. that's our past, and our present is that that shit hasn't ended yet and we need to make it stop. we cannot focus on ourselves when we've been doing that since forever and Black people have died because of it.
