Prosthetic
Thought of the day:
Some of the recently developed prosthetic devices are better than actual human limbs. When disabled individuals in the Olympics are challenged due to their superior prosthetic advantage, "what?"
All I can say about this is, "evolution, you need to catch up"!

How’s it going gamers I replayed Portal 2 the video game of all time and have been reminded of how truly obsessed I am with all the characters
So I present to you: Typical AU where everyone’s a normal human who works at Aperture but Glados and Caroline are sisters who are just barely keeping this company from going bankrupt

i'm ngl depicting thunder's prosthetic as a burden is pretty uncomfortable even if it is something some amputees experience because like. there's a huge stigma around prosthetics already you know? it's like having a parent forcibly strap a child into a wheelchair when they don't need it and having a horrible experience with it and that being your only character in a wheelchair. some full-time wheelchair users do resent their wheelchairs but when that's the only time you're bringing it up at all it feels like you're playing into our society's perception of wheelchairs and mobility aids in general as useless and best and divine punishment at worst. idk do let me know if i'm wording this wrong because i really do love better bones! it's just that this detail is... strange.
I mean, I'm open to feedback if that's not something I should do-- but I do actually have other characters in prosthetics and mobility aids! A lot of them! Thunderstar's actually the only one who ends up rejecting his own, because I also wanted to depict that it's bad to force a device onto someone who does not want one.
Especially in circumstances like Thunder Storm's, where that sort of device would be actively unhelpful for his lifestyle. It might help in open field environments like moorland, but then I got more feedback and realized that it would just make a lot of unwanted noise in a forest (since cats have carpal whiskers to help them figure out where to place their paws). Then I figured it was a good way to show how BB!Clear Sky doesn't actually listen to his son's needs and acts differently when he's not "grateful" enough for his gift.
But he's far and away from the only one with a mobility aid or prosthetic!
I haven't figured out Frog entirely yet, but he's going to be the first cat with a "wheelchair" type device, to set up a long line of cats through the generations improving on it (Probably not much more than a reinforced canvas or durable leather, as this was the age of very early flax processing)
Wildfur's the next in the big advancements, even making the Great Journey in his own and getting a side story based around Littlecloud and Cinderpelt collaborating over this
The device is then improved upon by Jessy for Briarlight, giving her a level of independence and confidence that she needs to finally cut her mom out until she learns how to behave
Deadfoot has a brace for his front paw because the joint is loose (it was based on a friend's carpel tunnel bracelet) which is affectionately referred to as The Bonker; his name is also now an Honor Title (Old name: Hoprunner) for inventing a battle move by distracting with his good paw, and then SLAMMING his other limb down hard on his opponent. It's called "deadfooting."
I think mobility devices are super important, usually massively improve quality of life, and I just enjoy designing them, so the choice to portray Thunder Storm's as negative was a very deliberate one that I did in response to what I thought was a desire in representation. Even the fact it's a hind-leg prosthetic was thought out, since those have a much higher satisfaction rate in humans than hand prosthetics, but in a cat would probably be the opposite.
Still, I'm not missing a limb, so now with all of that context presented, do you still think the same thing? Should I just add even more limb prosthetics to make the ratio of satisfied prosthetic users vs Thunder Storm even steeper?
Sunlit Frost is actually going to have a bite on his good paw go septic (the other side has permanent damage from the fire). I could have that paw get amputated and have Thunderstar "return the favor" for how Sunlit Frost created the prosthetic he rejected by helping him build his own. A pawsthetic, if you will
OR would it be better to just remove the subplot of Thunder Storm grappling with/rejecting a prosthetic that is unfitting for him entirely, and have all prosthetics be 100% treated as positive in the narrative?

Day 31 - Ren
Drabble for @hermitadaymay. I should clarify beforehand that this one is set in season 8.
Ren lay on his back, purposefully avoiding looking at what Doc was doing. He looked left instead, at the roughly limb-shaped arrangement of parts on a table next to the bed.
He couldn't avoid how it felt, though. The soft cleaning cloth brushed a nerve, and Ren shuddered at the jolt he felt through his entire... well, where his arm should have been.
Arm, leg, even his chest, it all felt horribly wrong. Doc had tried to reassure him, but with the hasty spare parts, Ren’s recovery was slow and he hated every minute.
Would he ever feel okay again?

Meanwhile, back home...
US health insurers limit coverage of prosthetic limbs, with some patients facing repossessions
In practice, though, prosthetic coverage by private health plans varies tremendously, said Ashlie White, chief strategy and programs officer at the Amputee Coalition. Even though coverage for basic prostheses may be included in a plan, "often insurance companies will put caps on the devices and restrictions on the types of devices approved," White said.
That means that a patient's costs can also fluctuate significantly, depending on that person's coverage specifics, the plan's restrictions and even geographic cost differences.
Fewer than half of people with limb loss have been prescribed a prosthesis, according to a report by the AHRQ. Plans may deny coverage for prosthetic limbs by claiming they aren't medically necessary or are experimental devices, even though microprocessor-controlled knees like Adams' have been in use for decades...
So, if you end up taking out medical loans to help cover the huge costs?
The federal Consumer Financial Protection Bureau has proposed a rule that would prohibit lenders from repossessing medical devices such as wheelchairs and prosthetic limbs if people can't repay their loans.
"It is a replacement limb," said White, whose organization has heard of several cases in which lenders have repossessed wheelchairs or prostheses. Repossession is "literally a punishment to the individual."
I may get a little irritated at feeling like they're pushing some particular components pretty hard locally, in a one-size-fits-most kind of way. But, the overall situation for specifically lower-limb amputees (mean age: 74) is looking damned good by comparison. (Also, incidentally, compared to what I saw from the NHS up close, but any similar stats other than for Service personnel are difficult to find. That's also another kettle of fish, though one I suspect is similarly driven by cost considerations--just in a slightly different way.)
Where I am now, they are covering more functional microprocessor knees for folks who need them (luckily I've still got the OEM version, which simplifies things an awful lot)--and nobody is likely to get their limb or wheelchair repoed. That is at least one thing I haven't needed to consider. Zero copay on the actual hardware thus far. Like $20-30 per actual office visit until I hit the annual cap.
There really are some aspects of the US healthcare system that I do not miss. As someone who grew up under the threat of losing our house over one cancer surgery Blue Cross deemed "experimental" after preapproving it. At least nobody tried to repo my stepdad's resected liver.
Some of the folks (employed by the actual Commonwealth of Virginia, I might add--not some sketchy collection agency) who kept trying to harass me over the phone too when I was like 12 probably would have tried that if they'd thought they could get away with it.

i love cyberware. it's so intimate
#personal#it's so. versatile as a storytelling device and just as like. extension of yourself. there's so many things you can do with it#obviously there's the weaponry cybernetics like the mantis blades gorilla arms etc which already fucks on its own#because you can combine it with your oc's fighting style... like reid has a single mantis blade and a monowire#and he combines the two to land sickass combos in combat and it's FUN#then there's sooooo many options for medical cyberware but at the same time there's the whole cyberpsychosis risk that has to be#taken into account for stuff like that. but also you can think about how that would set in and how it can be prevented and all#cassidy has a lot of cybernetic bones to replace his own because a lot of them got shattered in a very bad accident he was in#mikhail has a spine replacement and protective plating to strengthen it#there's the obvious use of prosthetics but also think of like. implants and more invisible pieces of cyberware that could be#used to like. relieve or even get rid of [chronic] pain [that the user would otherwise have]#there's the whole intimacy of the personal link... being able to connect yourself to others and whatnot#i loooove thinking of like. people going through information on a datashard together by having one of them plug it in#and then the other person connecting through personal link to see the information too#or just the act of slotting in a datashard for someone else. waaahhhh#letting your friends give you decorative cyberware how some people would let their friends give them tattoos...#the process of taking care of newly set cyberware to make sure the part of your body around it doesn't go numb etc etc#and then if it's cyberware with open parts or whatever you can STICK YOUR FINGERS IN IT!#dev has the chest cavity thing with the wires. you can put your fingers in that. he would like it#beckett has the maw. when it's closed there's the one cybernetic line and guess what? you can put your fingers in that#and he would like it#anyway i can probably say more because this is definitely not everything that i'm thinking of but also my brain zoomed out#but like. do you understand me

Me: *Writes a whole post about how it would be so cool to see Curly use morse code to communicate post-crash while still on the Tulpar and how that would alter his role in the story (even if it might not fit thematically in canon, AUs and fanfics still exist for a reason)*
