August weekends are some of Joeâs favorites, not because he goes out with friends or showers his girlfriend with the attention she desires. No, he loves days like this. Days where his living room doesnât stay clean for more than a few hours, mornings filled with cute giggles and sticky-syrupy little fingers, and nights controlled by a little girl with beautiful hazel brown eyes and a head full of dark tight curls, who picks the same bedtime story every night. These are his favorite moments.
Like now as he picks up the pink and purple lego sets off his living room floor while his little girl is off playing with some other toys in her playroom. From down the hall, he can hear all the make-believe scenarios the stuffies are going through. Currently, Who Dey the tiger and Joey the kangaroo were shopping for skirts but there was only one pink sparkly one left, it was a heavy debacle that Joe couldn't help but chuckle at while putting away the rest of the legos.Â
Elliana, or Ellie for short, is the no doubt most important person (albeit little person) in his life. From the day she was born, there was nothing he wouldnât do for his little girl. Now at 4 years old, the bubbly and charismatic girl is taking in some of his interests, hence the immense collection of Lego sets that decorate his home. Sure this hobby came back to bite him in the rear when he would fall to victim of said legos by stepping on them, but the time they spent together just playing around was worth all the lego injuries in the world. But they also have house slippers now, to protect both of their feet.
Joe moved to tidy up the kitchen after double checking that all legos were in their rightful spots, not that he was actually going to count every single lego. To prepare for his 4 day weekend with Ellie, he made sure to restock on all her favorite meals and snacks but also ingredients to make the Bengals-themed cookies that she hadnât stop talking about since she saw them on a commercial for a grocery store they donât even have in Ohio. Joe wasnât much of a baker, he only began cooking real meals when Ellie started staying over for multiple nights. Give him a box of Kraft Mac N Cheese and some dino nuggets and heâd turn it gourmet for his daughter, but for now thatâs as far as he could go. So he called in reinforcements for this mission.
*ding dong*
His saving grace, JaâMarr Chase. Joe was forever grateful to have a best friend that loved and cared for his daughter like she was his own. JaâMarr was a great uncle and Ellie thought so too.
âDaddy, daddy! Itâs Uncle Marr, heâs here to make cookies!â He smiles as the squeaky voiced girl comes running down the hall. Before she passes the kitchen, he sneakily pulls her into his arms before she could notice him. âDaddy!â
âWhat did I say about running in the house? I know youâre excited but you might fall and hurt yourself and that would make daddy really sad.â He lightly scolds bending down to her height.
âIâm sorry daddy. No more running.â Ellie cutely nods and places her small hands on his cheeks to lift his faux frown. A grin quickly returns to his face and he kisses her forehead.Â
âThatâs my good girl, how about you go wash your hands so you and Uncle Marr can get started?â Her face beams as she wraps her arms around his neck. He returns the hug almost as tightly to take in the warm sense of comfort that having her in his arms brings. His arms could probably wrap around the young girl twice, but the contentment of having her little ones squeezing onto him so tightly is a feelings he never wants to forget. When she finally lets go, she kisses his cheek then skips down the hall in her fluffy pink slippers.
The door bell ringing again brings Joe back to his full height, but his brows furrow when he doesnât hear his friend do his usual call out. âHeâs probably on the phone.â He thinks walking over to front door. He opens the door wide with a smile to greet one of his best friends, but gets replaced with his eyes widening and mouth dropping in shock.
âHi babe!âÂ
Joe blinks then narrows the doorâs opening to only fit half his body. âWhat are you doing here?â He asks the woman heâs been seeing for 6 months.
âI thought we could spend some time together. I know you said youâd be busy this weekend, but youâre busy every weekend. But since youâre actually home, we could watch a movie or something.â She smiles trying to peak inside. âAre you going to invite me in?â
Joe can hear the faucet in the first floor bathroom turn off and another car pull into his driveway. He looks behind him and zeroes in on every detail in his house that screams âthis is my little princessâ castleâ then turns back to his curious girlfriend. âUm, nowâs not a great time Kate.â
The short brunetteâs jaw clenches and just as sheâs about to respond, JaâMarr walks up behind her. âWow- so what, Saturdays are for the boys?â She barks. Actually theyâre for the girls, little girls.
âKate-
Loud giggles erupt from behind him. âUNCLE MARR! Daddy heâs right there I see him!âÂ
His teammate breaks out in a smile and waves to Ellie. âHey babygirl.â JaâMarr excuses himself from behind the woman and Joe lets him in the house.
Kate stands in front of him now dumbfounded. âYou have a daughter?â
When Joe met Katelyn, he hadnât had a long term girlfriend in a while, not since you. So he didnât have to introduce anyone to his daughter. His team already knew her, his friends were great with her and she had a mom and dad who would do anything for her. Joe didnât even feel like dating after your engagement ended two years ago. He had some hookups here and there, but getting into a relationship was not on his mind. Funnily thatâs how this ârelationshipâ started, she was just someone he could call and was cool about it. Then he took her out to dinner to test the waters and half a year later heâs here.
When you broke up, you and Joe agreed not introduce your daughter to anybody without the otherâs consent. You both wanted to make sure that she was your priority and her safety always came first. Then Joe implemented the rule to not introduce Elliana to romantic interests until at least 9 months into the relationship, he said it was him being protective but it was also so he didnât have to see you without anyone else until it was serious. You also didnât broadcast your daughter to the world like other parents, so not many knew that he did have a daughter unless they watched his every move.Â
So long story short, Katelyn did not know.
âWe should talk.â He said as she shoved his body to the side and stomped into his home. âI guess I deserve that.â He shook his head and shut the door.
Thankfully, the kitchen and the living room were a decent distance from each other so when she plopped down on the farthest end of the sofa, he could relax knowing Ellie wouldnât hear any distinct words the woman might start throwing his way. Kate sat facing the blank tv screen, he took the spot in front of her so he could still see some of the movements in the kitchen through a wall cut out.
âListen Kate.â
âNo me first.â She cuts him off with a hand in front of his face. He just nods and allows her to speak. âWhy didnât you tell me? Is she actually yours? Whereâs her mother? How come no one knows about her? Why didnât you fucking tell me? I thought I was your girlfriend, do I mean nothing to you? Who keeps this kind of giant fucking secret? Fucking talk!â She huffs.
âI was letting you go off- whatever. Yes, Elliana is mine. She just looks exactly like her motherâ He mumbles the last part, combing his fingers through his hair, a nervous tick heâs had since he was little.
âSheâs 4 and I have dual custody over her, so I mostly get her during the weekends. I didnât tell you because her mother and I have an arrangement and I would have to talk to her about it first. Her mom lives here- well not here here, she lives in the city. You know I donât like the attention the spotlight gives so it was easy for us to decide to leave her out of it as much as possible. I guess was going to tell you at some point.â
âWhat do you mean, you guess? Iâm your girlfriend! Donât you think I have the right to know that the guy Iâm seeing has a kid?â She crosses her arms red faced.
âCalm down, we havenât been seeing each other that long. We were never that serious.âÂ
âOf course not, every time I want to spend time with you thereâs a new excuse. Oh you have a game, or practice that evidently takes all fucking day. Maybe youâre hiding me because thereâs someone else.â
âI promise the only other girl in my life right now is my daughter. And everything you just said is a valid excuse, I have a job and child that require all my attention.â
âWhy canât she just stay with her mother? Do you have this stupid arrangement so she can come by and give you what youâve been missing? I bet youâve been fucking her this whole time.â
Joe scoffs, her words starting to make his blood boil. âKatelyn, what do you not understand about us co-parenting our daughter? I barely have time to spend with you, so what makes you think I have time to cheat? If you have a problem with me being a father, then you should leave.â
âI donât have a problem with you being a dad, I have a problem with you not talking about your ex. What, was she so special that it hurts to talk about her? Was she the one, Joe? What exactly is your relationship like with her now?â
âI told you, we co parent. Thereâs nothing going on with me and her mother, thatâs all in the past. Can we stop talking about her now, sheâs not going to just pop up out of nowhere?â He rolls his eyes.Â
âIâm not convinced, youâd only hide her if there was still something between you.âÂ
âYea her name is Elliana, the four year old making cookies in my kitchen right now.â
Before Katelyn can come back with another complaint, the doorbell rings, again. Joe sighs and looks out the window to see another very familiar car. Spoke too soon Joe.
He opens the door to see another one of his close teammates and the very woman he was just talking about.Â
âTee, Y/n what are you doing here?â His eyes lazily flicker between the pair and you send him a sheepish smile.
âOh you know, we were just in the neighborhood.â Tee nods very nonchalantly. You nudge his side with a chuckle.
âI got a 911 call from Ellie, she said there was an emergency.âÂ
âReally?â He starts to pat down his pockets and realizes his phone is missing. He turns around and spots a smiling little girl with two long braids neatly done with purple bows in her hair. âEllieâŠâ
âYes daddy.â
âDid you call mommy with my phone without telling me?âÂ
âYep!â
You stop the laugh from bursting out your mouth when he sends you a pointed look. Taking that as a sign to go âconfrontâ your daughter. âElliana why did you call me saying there was an emergency?
âThere is an emergency momma! Uncle Jay is eating all the cookies!â JaâMarr turns around shocked at his little partner.Â
âEllie, what did I tell you about snitches?â
âSnitches get stitches.â She relays matter factly. Joe shakes his head in confusion because clearly he wasnât aware she knew about snitches yet. While you chuckle and run in to snatch up your girl.
âEllie what did I tell you about taking advice from Uncle J?â You ask placing her on the counter.
âYou said to tell you when he teaches me something new. He just did momma, see I told you!â
âWow, Joe see what your friends have done to my sweet little girl.â She giggles wrapping her arms around your neck.
âTheyâre your friends too. How is it my fault, I had no idea?â
âThereâs your answer.â You smirk. âNow Ms. Ellie Dae Burrow, is there any other emergency I need to know about?â
Freeing herself from your grasp she nods her head. âWe donât know how to ice cookies mommy.â Then takes your face in her hands and turns you towards the powdered sugar mess next to her baking buddy.
âEllie, did you touch the cookies before touching mommyâs face?â
âUm yes?â
âDid you wash your hands after touching the cookies?â The young girl looks at her flour caked hands curiously.Â
âNo mommy.â
âRemember what I said about touching your toys with dirty hands?â Ellie nods her head. âWell that goes for people too, cause now Iâm covered in flour.â
âOh, sorry mommy. Iâll go wash my hands now.â
You go off to get washed up then Ellie returns to the kitchen to continue helping with the cookies while you join Joe in the living room.
âI hope you guys didnât have anything planned, Ellie clearly has a mind of her own.â Joe jokes with the couple.
âNot much, we were just going to pick up some lunch and maybe catch a movie.â Tee shrugs.
âThatâs what we were going to do, how funny.â Kate perks up with hidden mischief in her eyes. This is when you realize you have no clue where this woman came from nor who she is.Â
âJoe?â
âOh how rude of me. Iâm Katelyn, Joeâs girlfriend and I assume youâre his baby mama.â She fake smiles holding her hand out.
The eyes of the men in the room widen at her bold choice of words. You smirk and shake the womanâs hand. âYep, thatâs me. The mother of his only child, you must know how great of a dad he is right? Whenever he has any time off, heâs always picking her up or coming over to see her. Truly father of the decade and she isnât even 5 yet.â
Tee sits next the father hiding his face in his hands and chuckles. âI bet this isnât how you wanted this to go.â He whispers to him. Joe just groans in his hands.
âWell, you should have a seat.â Kate invites.
âOh I will, thank you for the hospitality in the house that my ex fiance asked me my opinion on over a year ago.â You grin and sit on the other side of Tee.
Katelynâs kind demeanor shifts with a fake smile wide on her cheeks as she sits next to Joe. âSo whyâd you break up?â
âWe are not starting here!â Joeâs eyes go wide and he straightens up. âAsk anything else please.â
âJoseph, your girlfriend wants to know why weâre not married right now. Why donât you tell her?â You say forgetting how the whole thing happened for a bit. Thankfully those cherished memories come floating back to your mind and you hoped he decided to change the subject to cover your mishap.
âYou just met, arenât you supposed to be doing the making sure sheâs safe for Ellie to be around thing?â You let out a muted sigh before replying.
âOh please, and you havenât?â
âNo.â He mutters.
Your face hardens as you kiss your teth. âYou let this woman around my daughter without screening her first? Joseph what the hell?â
He throws his hands up in surrender. âI didnât think it was going to last this long, I wasnât thinking about it.â
âThen why is she here?â You question turning your body completely towards him.
âYour guess is as good as mine!â
Katelyn scoffs, âexcuse me, Iâm sitting right here!â
âUnfortunately we see that too. How long have you been together anyway?â You hope that their explanation has to do with the restrictions you came up with to keep your daughter safe.
â7 mont-
â6 months- They say at the same time.
âDamn, this is awkward. Iâm gonna go.â Tee announces. âIâll text you.â Then he leaves.
âLooks like that didnât last, maybe thatâs why Joe left you. You attract drama everywhere you go.â Joe grimaces at her just wanting her to stop talking.
âOh no hun, I left him. Not like itâs any of your damn business cause you donât know me or him that well either. But let me guess, he told you he was busy but you showed up anyway hoping heâd let you in and give you whatever you want. I wouldnât stress about him not making enough time for you, thereâs a lot of worst ways he could be treating you. Just remember that at the end of the day, Iâm that little girlâs mom and heâs her dad. Iâll always have a key in the door, when you wonât even get to see the open house.â Then you got up and went to the kitchen. Joe watched in amusement as Katelyn seethed. Then peaked behind him to catch a glimpse of you and your daughter baking together.
âYou need to talk to her, she needs to know that Iâm your future and she needs to make room.â Joe rolls his eyes.
âSheâs right. Theyâre my past, present and my future. You were just a distraction and now I donât need you anymore. Iâm going to have to ask you need to leave my daughterâs house.âÂ
She shakes her head. âJoe, we can have our own family. You donât need them. I can do that for you.â
âKatelyn I want them, not you. Itâs time for you to go.â He stands and walks over to the door.
âYouâre going to miss me and regret this, but I wont open the door for you. When you want me back Iâll have someone way better than you. Please donât do this, donât break up with me.â Rolling his eyes at the quick change in behavior he unlocks the door for her.
âJoey, I thought we were having fun. You donât want to throw that away do you?â She asks as a final strand of hope glistens in her eyes.
Joe sighs, âit was fun, but Iâd rather play with flower shop legos and bake cookies.â
âFuck you Joe!â She stomps out with expletives shooting from her mouth.Â
⣠àł
âDaddy was your friend crying because you hurt her feelings?â Ellie asks with frosting covering her mouth when he arrives in the kitchen. He picks her up and kisses her sugary cheeks.
âNo bub, she hurt her own feelings.âÂ
âJoey hurt my feelings when left to join the circus.â She pouts talking about her stuffie and licking her sticky fingers.
âAre you eating the icing before we can put it on the cookies?â He asks the orange dye covered girl.
âNyooo.â She chuckles.
âWhat are we going to do with you?â
âMommy said weâre all going to the park to feed the ducks.â She smiles. You turn around with wide eyes and an amused smirk, halting your current task of making more orange frosting.
âI did not say that. Ellie Dae why are you telling your father stories?â
âI think she wants to go feed the ducks.â JaâMarr snorts while eating some of the cookie dough.
âUncle Marrrr, you canât eat more cookies! Itâs for the ducks.â
âEllie ducks donât eat cookies.â Joe chuckles putting her on a part of the counter thatâs not covered in sugar.
âKaia said they do.â Your daughter yawns mentioning your next door neighborâs teenage daughter that likes to babysit her.
âWell youâre going to have to ask Kaia where she found the cookies made for ducks.â Glancing over at the oven clock you hum realizing its 2pm. Naptime. Looking back over at your ex, you watch him wrap his arms around your daughter as her eyelids struggle to stay open. âJoe.â You whisper. He looks up at you then the time and nods.
âCome on babygirl, letâs go upstairs.â She whines as he lifts her, but still wraps her arms around his neck.
âBut daddy, Iâm not tired. Cookies.â She yawns laying her head on his chest. He smiles and kisses her head.
âI promise the cookies will be there when you wake up, and maybe weâll even take some to the ducks.â You canât help but smile as the pair climb the staircase up to her room. You always knew Joe would be a great father, especially when the you were surprised by the idea of having a baby so young and so early in your relationship. But he only stepped up in ways you couldn't have imagined, watching him become a father felt like one of lifeâs greatest privileges. Itâs one of the things you love loved about him. Joeâs caring nature was unlike any other, in those 4 years together youâd never felt so loved and cherished by anyone like him.
Turning around to go back to your icing duties, youâre faced with a smirking JaâMarr Chase. âWhat?â
âYouâre ridiculous.â He chuckles setting a timer for the cookies that you now notice are in the oven.Â
âI donât understand.â
âYou look at him the same way he looks at you, which is the exact same way when you were engaged. You just need to put the ring back on and plan the damn wedding at this point. I mean he broke up with his fling for you.â
You just shake your head at his nonsense, there was no way you and Joe would ever get back together after how it ended- after how you ended it. âNo, Iâm with Tee. They just had a mild disagreement, the second Ellie comes home with me heâll be calling her back over.â
âYouâre fucking with me right?â He scoffs. âYou and Tee are not together.â
âHow would you know?â
âHe texted me the minute you got here. The only reason you two were out together was because weâre all still friends. Donât try and bullshit me. Youâve been trying to make Joe jealous for weeks.â
âI have not, lower your voice. If you think he would ever take me back after the shit I said that night, then youâre delusional. I already fucked up with Joe.â
âBut you want him to though.â He tilts his head with a soft smile. âI bet you still have the ring on you.â Your eyes go straight to the floor.
âYou didnât give it back because he wouldnât take it. You canât put it away because of who it reminds you of and you wonât sell it because you still care. In fact Ellie said you put it on a necklace and kept it in the smallest pocket of your purse.â When you look up, heâs somehow produced the same ring Joe proposed to you with on that beach date when Ellie was 8 months old.
âShe really is a little blabber mouth.â You sniffle taking the chain.
âSheâs smart and a thief. She showed it to me after you went to go clean your face. She knows how much it means to you and whether she understands it or not, she wants her mom and dad back together.â
âOh please, this is the same little girl that wants to feed ducks sugar cookies.â
âAll Iâm saying is you should think about why youâre still carrying that nice ass ring around and talk to him. Alright Iâm gonna head out, you got this right?â You nod and share a friendly hug.
âRemember what I said.â He says as the front door opens then shuts.
You lean over the counter with your hands on your face and let out a groan. Thereâs no possible way for Joe to ever take you back. You donât even know why you still carry the ring around, but somehow leaving the house without it makes you feel untethered to reality.
âI doubt the cookies are that bad.â You gasp startled by the man leaning on the entryway to the kitchen.
âGoodness, Joe.â Your right hand covers your eyes while still clutching the gold chain.Â
âWow,â you drop your hand remembering what you were holding. âThatâs something I havenât seen in a while.â
âYea- um. I was having it cleaned.â You bite the inside of your lip, then replace it with a pout when his face tells you he knows the full story. âJoe-
âPut it on.â
âListen- wait what?â
You want to believe heâs joking, but the look in his eyes is all seriousness. âI want you to put the ring back on.â
âI canât, not after the way I ended things. It wouldnât be right.â
âYou can, because I want you to. I need you to put the ring on.â
âJoe thereâs something you should know.â
He sighs and takes the chain from you. âI know you and Tee hooked up once, Iâm still debating on if I need to sucker punch him for it.â Then unclasps the chain and releases the 7 karat diamond into his hand. âI know that we spent the last 2 years trying to forget everything that went down between us only to remind each other every weekend when Ellie is dropped off.â He begins to fiddle with the ring between his fingers. âI also know that nothing you said that night was true.â
You gulp locking eyes with the man youâve always wanted to call your husband. âJoe.â
âOn April 10th, your mom called you and said ânever get marriedâ because she had finalized her divorce with your father after spending 25 years in an unhappy marriage, that without a doubt gave you enough trauma in itself. April 11th, I came home from a night out where I drank way too much and reminded you of a part of your childhood you tried to run away from, which is something Iâm extremely sorry for. April 12th, we spent the entire day arguing about the dumbest shit because I couldnât see the pain you were harboring. Then you said âI canât spend the rest of my life with a man that doesnât care how he comes home to his family. I wonât let you run me into the mud like he did to her, I want to be happy. I canât marry you.â And took your ring off.â You couldnât stop the tears from falling down your face as he recalls the last night you spent together as a couple. A night youâve regretted since it happened.
âJoey, donât let me do this to you. You donât deserve this, you could do so much better better than a damaged bitch with trust issues.â With one hand he wipes your tears and with the other he takes your left hand. âJoe think about this.â
âI think thereâs something you should know.â He repeats your words with a more lighthearted tone, then gets down on one knee.Â
âThereâs no way, no way. Nope, heâs not doing this.â You echo to yourself while shaking your head.
âI spent two years thinking about this. Two years driving back and forth so we could have equal time with our little girl. Two years of wondering if Iâd ever have you back in my arms the way I dream of at night. Even spent one in this house thinking about how hollow it feels without you living in it. I bought it for you, so we could raise our family here together. I know this probably wonât top the first one and I donât have a new ring yet.â He winks causing another wave of tears to fall, this time happy tears.Â
âI canât see myself happier with anyone except this damaged woman in front of me with trust issues. Shit Iâm not that happy now, cause every time I look in our little girlâs eyes all I see is her beautiful mother. Sheâs a constant reminder of the woman I miss more than anything. I thought we could do this co-parenting thing and stay friends so Ellie could have a happy childhood, but I spend more time with you than I do without you. I donât want to wake up with anyone else in my bed that isnât the woman right in front of me. And Iâm thanking Elliana for bringing you here, because I need you. I want you back more than anything in the world.âÂ
His voice starts to tremble. âIâd step on a million legos for you, bake and burn a thousand dinners for you, miss hundreds of games for you- fucking anything. Anything you want, itâs yours. Just say yes.âÂ
You can feel the way your heart breaks for him, just proving how much you donât deserve him. âI canât.âÂ
âWhy not?â
You canât look him in the eye and break him again. You try to suck in the sob but thereâs no use.
âIâm pregnant with Teeâs baby.â

i'm sorry that was childish, donât hate me lol hereâs the real ending
Ë àŒâĄ âïœĄË ê„
âI canât,â You giggle when his pout deepens. âYou havenât asked the question yet.â
A bright smile breaks out on his face as he sighs in relief. âYou need to stop scaring me. Y/n Y/l/n, will you marry me?â
âYes, yes Iâll marry you, Joey. I'll marry you a hundred times if I have to.â You beam as he slips the ring back in its rightful spot then stands and pulls you into the most passionate kiss.Â
After two years, youâre back in the arms you love, felt the most comfortable and cherished in. You feel so lucky to have found a man, a fiance so caring, thoughtful, and understanding. Lucky that every time you pushed him away, he just pulled you in harder. And you canât wait to finally marry him and give him everything heâs ever wanted. Including a bigger family.

Surprises
Pairing: Simon "Ghost" Riley x gf!reader
Word count: 800
Warnings: none, fluff :)
Summary: Simon won't be home for Christmas, or will he?
Simon called you, the day before Christmas, Christmas Eve, when he finally got access to his phone, saying he wouldnât be home. The mission he was on was taking too long and they needed him. You were disappointed, of course, but you shrugged it off. You knew he worked hard. It was okay.Â
You laid back with a mug of cocoa in hand, sitting on the couch, plush blanket wrapped around you. You were watching the Grinch, but the Jim Carrey version. You were at peace, cozy, comfortable, and happy. Even if Simon wasnât there.Â
You were halfway through the movie before the doorbell rang. You set down your mug, tossing your blanket onto the couch. You straighten your shirt, heading to the door. This is the first time you donât look through the peephole. You shouldâve.Â
You pull the door open.
There he was.Â
Full gear. Mask still on. Guns still strapped into their holsters.Â
Lieutenant S. Riley sewn on a patch on his black vest.Â
On one knee. For you. Velvet small box in his hand.Â
Tears sting the corners of your eyes. You can barely hear your own voice, âS-si?â
âHi lovie,â you can practically hear the smirk on his face. âKnow I said I wouldnâ be homeâŠbut had somethinâ to do. Practically begged Price to let me go. Big guy understood, I mean, he knows how hard it is to surprise your girl. Had something super important to ask yaâ.â
Thereâs no way this was happening. You couldnât believe it.Â
ââhis wasnât how I planned iâ. Always wanâed to take you out to a beach or shit anâ sayinâ all that romantic shiâ. But âere we are. Couldnât wait any longer. Youâre too beautiful and I wanna be yours foreveâ. Youâre too kind to me to let anyone else have ya. Youâre absolutely perfect, lovie. Absolutely perfect,â you can tell heâs smiling. âYou make mâ life so much better. I wanna marry you, lovie. I do. Please. So, will ya? Will ya marry this old sack oâ balls?â
Your mind is clouded. Your eyes filled with so many tears, you canât even see him anymore. Your hands are clasped against your chest.Â
âL-lovie?â Simon panics. He thinks the tears on your cheeks mean no. He gulps. âSay somethinâ. Please?â
Before he can get another word out, you throw your arms around him, crashing into him. You wrap your legs around his torso, hands cupping the back of his head. He stumbles, almost dropping the ring. He gets onto both knees now, both hands stroking your back, holding you flush against him. He sighs in relief.Â
He stands up, carrying both of you back into the apartment. He shuts the door with his foot, still holding you against him, your legs still wrapped tightly around his waist, head tucked into the crook of his neck.Â
When you finally pull away, the tears are still streaming down your cheeks. Simon wipes them away with his free hand, the other still secured around you, holding the ring box. âYouâre serious?â
ââCourse, I am, lovie. Spend the rest of your life with me, please,â he practically begs as he lowers you down to the ground.
You tear up again, smile so big it covers half your face. âOf course, I will.âÂ
He pulls you into his chest, hugging you so tight you think youâll be crushed. He pulls off his mask and balaclava, kissing your temple, cheek, neck, and any other exposed skin he can find.Â
The two of you stand in each otherâs embrace for a few more minutes before he finally pulls way, kissing your cheek one last time. He opens the box, a large oval cut diamond staring back at you. He slips the ring onto your finger. âI love you.â
âI love you too,â you wipe your tears before more come flooding down. âThis is so much. One minute, Iâm sitting on my couch watching the Grinch and the next, Iâm getting engaged to you?!â
ââS insane, I know, lovie. Buâ I had to surprise you. Price gave me the okay to leave 4 days âgo. Didnât wanna show up âtill tonight, couldnât ruin my surprise,â he gives you a cheeky smile before kissing your cheek. âNow, can ya stop cryinâ so I can get a nice pic of me anâ my girl, no, my fiance, to send to the boys?âÂ
You giggle, wiping your tears as he leads you back to the couch, stripping his gear off on the way. He sits down next to you, pulls out his phone and snaps a selfie of you two before sending it off to the Task Force group chat with the caption âMy beautiful fiancĂ©.â

How To Play The Revolution
So: I do not like the idea of TTRPGs making formal mechanics designed to incentivise ethical play.
But, to be honest, I do not like the idea of any single game pushing any particular formal mechanics about ethical play at all.
So here I am, trying to think through the reasons why, and proposing a solution. (Sort of. A procedure, really.)
+
Assumptions:

1.
Some genres of game resist ethical play. A grand strategy game dehumanises people into census data. The fun of a shooter is violence. This is truest in videogames, but applies to tabletop games also.
Games can question their own ethics, to an extent. Terra Nil is an anti-city-builder. But it is a management game at heart, so may elide critiques of "efficiency = virtue".
Not all games should try to design for ethical play. I believe games that incentivise "bad" behaviour have a lot to teach us about those behaviours, if you approach them with eyes open.

2.
The systems that currently govern our real lives are terrible: oligarchy, profit motive; patriarchy, nation-states, ethno-centrisms. They fuel our problems: class and sectarian strife, destruction of climate and people, spiritual desertification.
They are so total that the aspiration to ethical behaviour is subsumed by their logics. See: social enterprise; corpos and occupying forces flying rainbow flags; etc.
Nowadays, when I hear "ethical", I don't hear "we remember to be decent". I hear "we must work to be better". Good ethics is radical transformation.

3.
If a videogame shooter crosses a line for you, your only real response is to stop playing. This is true for other mechanically-bounded games, like CCGs or boardgames.
In TTRPGs, players have the innate capability to act as their own referees. (even in GM-ed games adjudications are / should be by consensus.) If you don't like certain aspects of a game, you could avoid it---but also you could change it.
Only in TTRPGs can you ditch basic rules of the game and keep playing.
+
So:
D&D's rules are an engine for accumulation: more levels, more power, more stuff, more numbers going up.
If you build a subsystem in D&D for egalitarian action, but have to quantify it in ways legible to the game's other mechanical parts---what does that mean? Is your radical aspiration feeding into / providing cover for the game's underlying logics of accumulation?
At the very least it feels unsatisfactory---"non-representative of what critique / revolution entails as a rupture," to quote Marcia, in conversations we've been having around this subject, over on Discord.
How do we imagine and represent rupture, to the extent that the word "revolution" evokes?
My proposal: we rupture the game.
+++
How To Play The Revolution
Over the course of play, your player-characters have decided to begin a revolution:
An armed struggle against an invader; overturning a feudal hierarchy; a community-wide decision to abandon the silver standard.
So:
Toss out your rule book and sheets.
And then:
Keep playing.
You already know who your characters are: how they prefer to act; what they are capable of; how well they might do at certain tasks; what their context is. You and your group are quite capable of improv-ing what happens next.
Of course, this might be unsatisfactory; you are here to play a TTRPG, after all. Structures are fun. Therefore:
Decide what the rules of your game will be, going forward.
Which rules you want to keep. Which you want to discard. Jury-rig different bits from different games. Shoe-horn a tarot deck into a map-making game---play that. Be as comprehensive or as freeform as you like. Patchwork and house-rule the mechanics of your new reality.
The god designer will not lead you to the revolution. You broke the tyranny of their design. You will lead yourself. You, as a group, together. The revolution is DIY.

+++
Notes:
This is mostly a thought experiment into a personal obsession. I am genuinely tempted to write a ruleset just so I can stick the above bit into it as a codified procedure.
I am tickled to imagine how the way this works may mirror the ways revolutions have played out in history.
A group might already have alternative ruleset in mind, that they want to replace the old ruleset with wholesale. A vanguard for their preferred system.
Things could happen piecemeal, progressively. Abandon fiat currency and a game's equipment price list. Adopt pacifism and replace the combat system with an alternative resolution mechanic. As contradictions pile up, do you continue, or revert?
Discover that the shift is too uncomfortable, too unpredictable, and default back to more familiar rules. The old order reacting, reasserting itself.
+
I keep returning to this damn idea, of players crossing thresholds between rulesets through the course of play. The Revolution is a rupture of ethical reality like Faerie or the Zone is a rupture in geography.
But writing all this down is primarily spurred by this post from Sofinho talking about his game PARIAH and the idea that "switching games/systems mid-session" is an opportunity to explore different lives and ethics:
Granted this is not an original conceit (I'm not claiming to have done anything not already explored by Plato or Zhuangzi) but I think it's a fun possibility to present to your players: dropping into a parallel nightmare realm where their characters can lead different lives and chase different goals.
+
Jay Dragon tells me she is already exploring this idea in a new game, Seven Part Pact:
"the game mechanics are downright oppressive but also present the capacity to sunder them utterly, so the only way to behave ethically is to reject the rules of the game and build something new."
VINDICATION! If other designers are also thinking along these lines this means the idea isn't dumb and I'm not alone!

I had a super angsty thought and Iâm not sure which of these two scenarios are actually more angsty so Iâll just leave this here. When the SS guy who was part of Luâs assault arrives, we know Ida immediately recognizes him right. And that he makes himself known to the rest of the Bloody Trinity to throw off their leadership. But you mentioned that everything that happened with Lu was very repetitive so Iâd imagine that there were at least a few people involved and after a while, faces can start to look the same/ blur together, you can start to dissociate, etc. etc. And we do know she lost a bunch of blood from the dog bite. So. The one scenario being that they both recognize him is so devastating and heartbreaking cause already, poor Ida sheâs really going through it but then poor Lu too. But. What if Lu just doesnât know. Just doesnât recognize him as one of the ones that hurt her because his part of it was after sheâd entered a more floaty state of mind. And Ida is all of a sudden hit with this realization that she quite literally just does not recognize him. And then itâs like is it more cruel to tell her and have her live in fear of him or to let her walk past him and such and not know?
My friend, I was thinking this too! Because it would honestly make sense that she might not! But Ida would, those faces would be burned in her mind.

itâs your shouto obsessed anon again! maybe a proposal drabble or headcannons? thank you in advance đ€
(Laser: Heyyy welcome back, Anon! I'd be happy to drop some cute proposal headcanons for you B) Thank you for your requests! It really means a lot to me that someone's taken such an interest in my writing.)
MHA-MHA-MHA
Shouto proposes as soon as possible. Once he's sure he's in love with you, he wants to put a ring on it. It doesn't matter if the two of you are still in high school at that point, he's sure of himself, he wants you by his side forever.
It's very sudden, he'll just take you by the hand, stare deep into your eyes in that way that he does, and say, "marry me." He probably doesn't have a ring prepared, this might be in the middle of a crowded hallway or during a group hangout. No sense of timing, just pure love and determination. It was important so he had to do it as soon as possible.
Obviously, you're caught off guard. It's probably too soon in the relationship (or in your lives in general) for a big step like that, no matter how deeply the two of you feel for each other. You explain this to him, and he's disappointed, but "not yet" is not the same as "not ever" and he can be patient, especially for you. He'll wait for as long as it takes until you're ready, but just know that he's made up his mind. He's steadfast in his decision.
So life carries on and the two of you grow together, building your careers and lives side by side. He doesn't push for marriage, doesn't want to make you feel even the slightest bit pressured for it, but that doesn't mean he stops wanting it. This is made perfectly clear when you are the one to bring it up to him at some point, finally ready for that next big step, and he reveals to you the engagement ring he's had sitting in a drawer in his office desk for years now, ready and waiting to be placed on your finger.
You swear you fall in love with him all over again in that moment.

How do you think Zuko and Katara would get engaged?
How would Zuko propose to Katara and how would Katara propose to Zuko?
There's a lot of varying opinions in the fandom, and I wanted to see your two cents, lol
I think I've answered this before, but it was at least 2 years ago, and I refuse to sift through Tumblr's useless archive for the post. In my mind, Zuko proposes. It's always Zuko who proposes, and I will never write it differently. I have 2 reasons for that.
Reason the first: I'm a traditionalist when it comes to this. I, as a woman want to be proposed to. In my own personal experience, if a woman is proposing to a man, the chances are good he doesn't actually want to be married. Now, before you get upset with me, that's not me saying that's a rule. If you feel differently, that's totally fine. I'm not predicting doom for anyone's relationship if the woman proposes to the man. This is just something I've observed enough times for me not to be into that dynamic, but if you like it, I love it. For you.
Point the second: There is a disheartening lack of darker skinned women being romanced in fiction. We tend to be relegated to the sexless, strong, independent, don't need no man stereotypes. I want Katara to get the full romance novel experience of a powerful man willing to move the stars to make her happy. I like the idea of her getting to experience being taken care of and protected and pursued romantically, and that includes Zuko doing his best to give her the perfect proposal (it doesn't always go well in my stories, but he tries very hard, and that's the point). So in short, no. I will never have Katara proposing to Zuko. Although, I think I like the idea of her giving him something to celebrate their engagement after she accepts, so I guess something like him getting a betrothal necklace from her isn't off the table (except it probably won't be a necklace, because it's never confirmed in the show that the SWT does betrothal necklaces, and I have decided that in my canon, they do not).
Now as for how he'd do it. It depends on the story, but he will definitely not use a necklace (I mean, I have one story where he does, but I wrote that years ago. I did a lot of things in that story I wouldn't necessarily do today). My head canon is that the SWT gives practical gifts, and I like the idea of him tailoring those practical gifts to what she'll need in the Fire Nation- a new fancy waterskin, a golden pen for all the policy she'll be writing, a crown that honors her heritage somehow, stuff like that. He wouldn't present her with all of that during his actual proposal, though. That's for the official betrothal.

Do you know anything (or maybe have some headcanons) about Rohanâs wedding traditions? How do they propose to be married? What kind of wedding outfits do they have? Do they marry for life, or does divorce exist? Thank you so much! I so love reading all your musings about Rohan!
Thanks for this question, and for being so nice! I love to talk Rohan, so I appreciate the chance! â€ïž
Iâve actually never written a Rohirrim wedding and there really isnât anything to go on from the books/lore, either, so I donât have a fully developed idea of what that would look like.
Off the cuff, Iâd say weddings in Rohan probably vary a lot depending on the wealth, status, location, etc. of the couple. Rich people will obviously have a much bigger, more elaborate wedding, maybe with multiple days of feasting and revelry, while a poor couple has a simple ceremony and a little party. Someone from the far western borders might have different traditions, perhaps with some Dunlendish influence as they were direct neighbors and sometimes intermarried, versus someone in the Wold, which is all the way east, extremely rural and sparsely populated. Thereâs no official religion of Rohan or anything that might have imposed uniformity on all their rituals, so variety is the name of the game. But there would be some common cultural elements, like toasting and poems and songs, etc. All that ceremonial stuff is in the category of things I definitely need to think more about, though Iâm also always interested in other peopleâs thoughts and ideas, too!
For proposals, I think it was a tradition for most of Rohanâs history (something they picked up from the Gondorians) for royalty and nobles to be guided into negotiated marriages that were considered strategically advantageous. (Marrying for love is one of the few privileges of the poor! They could just find someone they liked, decide between themselves that they wanted to marry and then move forward.) Arranged marriage is something I have addressed in my stories. Iâve written about Elfhild growing to love ThĂ©oden deeply over time but still always regretting a little that she didnât get to choose him. Also, my ThĂ©odred HATED the idea of being forced into a marriage and held out against it, which is why he was still unmarried into his 40âs. He didnât live to see that officially change (*sob*), but I think it did. Ăomer makes it clear in ROTK that Ăowyn consented to Faramirâs proposal â âshe grants it full willingâ â and if he had learned that personal autonomy was important for her, I think heâd want to give the same autonomy to himself, his children and others in the future.
As for divorce, thereâs no evidence for it in canon (and I am CERTAIN that Tolkien would hate it) but Iâm a big believer that divorce is one of the most important tools for the protection of womenâs interests to ever exist. So I want it in Rohan! I have a tiny piece of a draft somewhere of Ăomerâs wife (who is not LothĂriel in my fics, but a daughter of Elfhelm) being left to rule alone while Ăomer is away on business in Gondor, and she essentially invents divorce while heâs gone by granting the plea of several women for the dissolution of their marriages to drunken jerks. Even though the husbands complain bitterly to Ăomer when he returns, Ăomer has learned some stuff through the years and backs his wifeâs move. Iâm not sure if that little idea will ever make it into a posted story, but it exists not just in my head but on my google drive!
Thanks again for being so kind! And if you or anyone else have creative Rohirrim wedding/marriage ideas, please always feel free to share them with me!
