Local Expertise: Choose a property manager with extensive knowledge of the Brisbane real estate market. Local expertise ensures they understand the area's rental trends, property values, and tenant preferences, allowing them to manage your property effectively.
Experience and Credentials: Look for a property manager with a solid track record and relevant certifications. Verify their experience in managing similar properties and check for professional memberships, such as with the Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ).
Tenant Screening Process: Inquire about their tenant screening procedures. A thorough screening process helps secure reliable tenants, reducing the risk of property damage and ensuring timely rent payments. Ensure they conduct background checks, credit assessments, and verify employment and rental history.
Maintenance and Repairs: Assess how the property manager handles maintenance and repairs. Prompt and cost-effective maintenance is crucial for preserving your property's value. Ensure they have a network of trusted contractors and a system for addressing issues quickly.
Communication and Reporting: Choose a property manager who maintains clear and regular communication. They should provide detailed reports on rental income, expenses, and property conditions. Transparency and responsiveness are key to keeping you informed and involved.
Fee Structure and Contract Terms: Understand the property manager's fee structure and contract terms. Ensure there are no hidden costs and that the fees are competitive. Review the contract carefully to ensure it aligns with your investment goals and provides flexibility if needed.
By focusing on these tips, property investors in Brisbane can select a property manager who will effectively manage their investments, leading to improved tenant satisfaction and optimized returns.

Hurricane Season Risks and Preparedness
Florida’s hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30. Hurricane Milton is hitting just as the state braces for more potential storms. The danger doesn’t end when the hurricane passes. After a storm like Milton, communities are left vulnerable to future weather events. The risk of another hurricane striking Florida before Milton’s recovery remains high.
Weakening Infrastructure – After Milton, homes and businesses will be more susceptible to damage from weaker tropical storms or hurricanes. Unrepaired roofs and weakened structures could collapse or fail under minimal pressure.
Flooding Risks – Milton’s heavy rainfall and storm surge will saturate the ground and fill waterways. This will leave communities vulnerable to even small rain events, with the potential for additional flooding.
Power Restoration Delays – With Milton causing widespread outages, the power grid may remain unstable for weeks, making it difficult for residents to recover fully before the next storm hits.
Preparing for Future Storms – Residents must begin making plans now for the rest of hurricane season. Stock up on supplies, make sure your property is secure, and stay informed about future weather developments.
Additional Tips for Hurricane Preparedness
To ensure the safety of yourself and your loved ones, follow these guidelines when preparing for a Hurricane:
Evacuate if Ordered – Listen to local officials and immediately evacuate if you are in an evacuation zone. Delaying could put your life at risk.
youtube
Secure Your Property – Install hurricane shutters, trim trees, and secure outdoor items. Consider having your roof inspected by New Image Roofing before the storm hits.
Prepare a Disaster Kit – Include essentials like water, food, medications, flashlights, batteries, and important documents.
Stay Informed – Official sources like FEMA, FDEM, and the National Weather Service offer updates and information.

Woo yay yippieeee even :(
From James spann Twitter (above imbed):
WEDNESDAY MORNING UPDATE: Milton remains a catastrophic category five hurricane early this morning with winds of 160 mph. The hurricane is about 300 miles southwest of Tampa, and is moving to the northeast at 14 mph. A Storm Surge Warning is in effect for... * Florida west coast from Flamingo northward to Yankeetown, including Charlotte Harbor and Tampa Bay * Sebastian Inlet Florida to Altamaha Sound Georgia, including the St. Johns River A Hurricane Warning is in effect for... * Florida west coast from Bonita Beach northward to Suwannee River, including Tampa Bay * Florida east coast from the St. Lucie/Martin County Line northward to Ponte Vedra Beach From NHC Milton is moving northeastward at 12 kt in the flow between a mid-to upper-level trough over the northern Gulf and a ridge located over the Greater Antilles. This motion should generally continue until Milton makes landfall in Florida, which is likely to occur late tonight or early tomorrow morning. After the hurricane reaches the coast, a turn to the east-northeast is expected as another trough approaches the system from the west. Milton should exit Florida and move over the Atlantic waters tomorrow afternoon and accelerate eastward after that. The NHC track forecast is nudged a little to the north of the previous one to be in better agreement with the latest models. It should be noted that this forecast is based on the model fields, not the interpolated models which appear to be too far south. Users are urged not to focus on the exact landfall point as the average error at 24 hours is about 40 miles. The global models agree that vertical wind shear is expected begin to increase over Milton later today, and that should cause some weakening. However, there is high confidence that Milton will remain a very dangerous hurricane when it reaches Florida, and maintain hurricane status as it moves across the state. The cyclone is expected to become extratropical over the Atlantic on Friday and gradually weaken. The NHC intensity forecast is similar to the previous one and near the high end of the model guidance. Milton's wind field is expected to grow considerably in size while it moves across Florida. Additionally, a large region of tropical storm and hurricane-force winds could occur on the northwest/back side of the storm since Milton will be interacting with a frontal boundary and beginning extratropical transition. Damaging winds, life-threatening storm surge, and heavy rainfall will extend well outside the forecast cone. This is a very serious situation and residents in Florida should closely follow orders from their local emergency management officials. Evacuations and other preparations should be rushed to completion. Milton has the potential to be one of the most destructive hurricanes on record for west-central Florida. Key messages *A large area of destructive storm surge, with highest inundations of 10 ft or greater, is expected along a portion of the west-central coast of the Florida Peninsula. If you are in the Storm Surge Warning area, this is an extremely life-threatening situation, and you should evacuate as soon as possible if ordered by local officials. *Devastating hurricane-force winds are expected along portions of the west coast of Florida, where a Hurricane Warning is in effect. Milton is forecast to remain a hurricane while it crosses the Florida Peninsula and life-threatening hurricane-force winds, especially in gusts, are expected to spread inland across the peninsula. Preparations to protect life and property, including being ready for long-duration power outages, should be rushed to completion. *Heavy rainfall across the Florida Peninsula through tomorrow brings the risk of catastrophic and life-threatening flash and urban flooding along with moderate to major river flooding, especially in areas where coastal and inland flooding combine to increase the overall flood threat.
Stay safe y'all.

Without more funding, the agency may be forced to suspend rebuilding projects and focus on life-saving operations.
. . .
The rapid spending — which is likely to accelerate as aid flows to states pulverized by Hurricanes Helene and Milton — soon will force the Federal Emergency Management Agency to restrict spending unless Congress approves additional funding.
“I’m going to have to evaluate how quickly we’re burning the remaining dollars in the Disaster Relief Fund,” FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell said Wednesday during a news briefing, hours before Milton began tearing into Florida’s Gulf Coast and spawning floods, tornadoes and power outages across the state.
Under the spending restrictions, FEMA would cut off funding for disaster-related rebuilding projects nationwide and reserve its money for life-saving operations during disasters. The cutoff often halts major repairs to roads, sewer plants and water-treatment facilities.
. . .
President Joe Biden has sought additional FEMA funding since last October but Congress has ignored the request. On Wednesday, a group of House Democrats urged Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) to “immediately reconvene” the chamber “so that it can pass robust disaster relief spending.
”The Democrats, led by Rep. Marcy Kaptur of Ohio, said money is needed for both FEMA and a Small Business Administration program that gives low-interest loans to homeowners, renters and businesses whose property was damaged by a disaster. But Johnson has said that he does not plan to reconvene the House before the election to address disaster funding.
-----
Republicans are deliberately causing FEMA to fail so they can lie and blame Biden Harris for it. They don't give a shit if it ruins lives or kills people.

Hurricanes Helene and Milton have devastated communities across the South. Helene went up the East Coast and drenched people in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina, before unleashing traumatic floods in the western part of North Carolina. In some cases, residents in places distant from the coast had mere minutes to evacuate before rising water and mudslides destroyed roads and evacuation routes. At the latest count, around 230 people have lost their lives, many individuals saw their homes ruined, and businesses were forced to close with little hope of reopening.
Milton, meanwhile, slammed into Florida with high winds and strong storm surges. With water rises running over a dozen feet, it forced evacuations of large numbers of people and created destruction around the Sunshine State. With storms getting bigger and dropping more rain, the property damage goes up, lives are lost, and people have difficulty finding insurers for their homes.
These super-storms are merely the latest in a long line of hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, and drought that have afflicted the United States. As the planet has warmed up, storms are getting worse as the warmer waters and more humid air intensify hurricanes and unleash tremendous damage on affected communities. Climate change clearly contributes to the extreme storms and poses tremendous risks going forward.
But aside from the devastations resulting from these natural disasters, in many places there has been a flood of misinformation that has spread false rumors, undermined government officials and disaster relief agencies, and alleged undocumented immigrants are getting more help than flood-plagued Americans. False claims have been viewed more than 160 million times in the days following the recent hurricanes.
There have been widely shared posts on Twitter/X that “the Federal Emergency Management Agency ‘actively blocked’ donations to victims of Helene and is ‘seizing goods…and locking them away.’” X owner Elon Musk has added his own false twists to the situation by claiming that “FEMA used up its budget ferrying illegals into the country instead of saving American lives.” Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump falsely claimed administration officials have not reached out to governors in affected states and offered federal assistance. Georgia Governor Brian Kemp quickly shot down that allegation by saying President Joe Biden had called him and provided helpful federal assistance.
The traditional wisdom on false narratives and conspiracy theories used to be to ignore crazy rumors and fail to respond in order not to amplify fake stories. The idea was that not responding was safer than confronting and challenging false stories and seeking to correct the official record.
Yet in an effort to fight false narratives, government authorities and civil society organizations now are pushing back hard on disaster-related misinformation. In the case of Helene, for example, FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell complained that “It’s just really unfortunate that [people] continue to try to create this level of fear in these communities that is impeding our ability to do our job at the level that we need to do it, but we’re not going to let it deter us.” Continuing, she noted, “We are going to continue to be in these communities and support them for whatever they need.”
Governors are aggressively fighting disinformation. They point to the millions of federal assistance that already has poured into affected states and provided help for the displaced. They argue FEMA has done a productive job under very challenging circumstances and continues to be a constructive force in disaster relief.
Republican members of Congress from western North Carolina joined the debunking. For example, Representative Chuck Edwards (R-N.C.) did a CNN interview where he challenged disaster-related misinformation. He noted that Hurricane Helene was not geo-engineered by the government, FEMA delivery trucks were not being stopped at the state border, and disaster relief money was not being confiscated or diverted to immigrants or foreign aid.
In altering the conventional communications response, authorities are focusing on several principles. First, it is important to confront blatant lies. FEMA has a rumor control page to deal with disaster-related misinformation that notes false rumors and explains what actually is happening. It, along with other organizations, is fact-checking questionable allegations and putting out factual information for reporters and the general public.
Second, people need to rely on trusted communicators in the aftermath of natural disasters. Churches, synagogues, nonprofit organizations, and civic groups can play a constructive role in offering help, clarifying rumors, and shooting down blatant lies. They can confront deceit and push out fact-based information. They can reassure the afflicted, provide needed assistance, and work with government authorities so that disaster relief help gets to those who need it.
Third, people should monitor social media sites so they know what problematic rumors are circulating and how people are reacting to those lies. Rumors can go viral in a matter of minutes and reach millions of Americans. Through AI and automated bots, lies can quickly overwhelm the truth, scare people, and interfere with disaster relief operations, and there has to be pushback against these falsehoods.
Speaking more broadly, we need to understand that blatant lies can cost lives, harm businesses, and damage trust in American institutions. As Elaine Kamarck and I argue in our Brookings Press book “Lies That Kill: A Citizen’s Guide to Disinformation,” there are falsehoods that plague many areas from election integrity and public health to climate change and race relations. It is vital to take aggressive action to protect civic discourse. Democracies require facts and reasonable discourse in order to solve problems and address natural disasters. Information that falsely undermines public trust is dangerous and corrodes our national conversations and ability to address pressing problems.

F.2.1 How does private property affect freedom?
The right-“libertarian” either does not acknowledge or dismisses as irrelevant the fact that the (absolute) right of private property may lead to extensive control by property owners over those who use, but do not own, property (such as workers and tenants). Thus a free-market capitalist system leads to a very selective and class-based protection of “rights” and “freedoms.” For example, under capitalism, the “freedom” of employers inevitably conflicts with the “freedom” of employees. When stockholders or their managers exercise their “freedom of enterprise” to decide how their company will operate, they violate their employee’s right to decide how their labouring capacities will be utilised and so under capitalism the “property rights” of employers will conflict with and restrict the “human right” of employees to manage themselves. Capitalism allows the right of self-management only to the few, not to all. Or, alternatively, capitalism does not recognise certain human rights as universal which anarchism does.
This can be seen from Austrian Economist W. Duncan Reekie’s defence of wage labour. While referring to “intra-firm labour markets” as “hierarchies”, Reekie (in his best ex cathedra tone) states that ”[t]here is nothing authoritarian, dictatorial or exploitative in the relationship. Employees order employers to pay them amounts specified in the hiring contract just as much as employers order employees to abide by the terms of the contract.” [Markets, Entrepreneurs and Liberty, p. 136 and p. 137]. Given that “the terms of contract” involve the worker agreeing to obey the employers orders and that they will be fired if they do not, its pretty clear that the ordering that goes on in the “intra-firm labour market” is decidedly one way. Bosses have the power, workers are paid to obey. And this begs the question: if the employment contract creates a free worker, why must she abandon her liberty during work hours?
Reekie actually recognises this lack of freedom in a “round about” way when he notes that “employees in a firm at any level in the hierarchy can exercise an entrepreneurial role. The area within which that role can be carried out increases the more authority the employee has.” [Op. Cit., p. 142] Which means workers are subject to control from above which restricts the activities they are allowed to do and so they are not free to act, make decisions, participate in the plans of the organisation, to create the future and so forth within working hours. And it is strange that while recognising the firm as a hierarchy, Reekie tries to deny that it is authoritarian or dictatorial — as if you could have a hierarchy without authoritarian structures or an unelected person in authority who is not a dictator. His confusion is shared by Austrian guru Ludwig von Mises, who asserted that the “entrepreneur and capitalist are not irresponsible autocrats” because they are “unconditionally subject to the sovereignty of the consumer” while, on the next page, admitting there was a “managerial hierarchy” which contains “the average subordinate employee.” [Human Action, p. 809 and p. 810] It does not enter his mind that the capitalist may be subject to some consumer control while being an autocrat to their subordinated employees. Again, we find the right-“libertarian” acknowledging that the capitalist managerial structure is a hierarchy and workers are subordinated while denying it is autocratic to the workers! Thus we have “free” workers within a relationship distinctly lacking freedom — a strange paradox. Indeed, if your personal life were as closely monitored and regulated as the work life of millions of people across the world, you would rightly consider it the worse form of oppression and tyranny.
Somewhat ironically, right-wing liberal and “free market” economist Milton Friedman contrasted “central planning involving the use of coercion — the technique of the army or the modern totalitarian state” with “voluntary co-operation between individuals — the technique of the marketplace” as two distinct ways of co-ordinating the economic activity of large groups (“millions”) of people. [Capitalism and Freedom, p. 13] However, this misses the key issue of the internal nature of the company. As right-“libertarians” themselves note, the internal structure of a capitalist company is hierarchical. Indeed, the capitalist company is a form of central planning and so shares the same “technique” as the army. As Peter Drucker noted in his history of General Motors, ”[t]here is a remarkably close parallel between General Motors’ scheme of organisation and those of the two institutions most renowned for administrative efficiency: that of the Catholic Church and that of the modern army.” [quoted by David Engler, Apostles of Greed, p. 66] Thus capitalism is marked by a series of totalitarian organisations. Dictatorship does not change much — nor does it become less fascistic — when discussing economic structures rather than political ones. To state the obvious, “the employment contract (like the marriage contract) is not an exchange; both contracts create social relations that endure over time — social relations of subordination.” [Carole Pateman, The Sexual Contract, p. 148]
Perhaps Reekie (like most right-“libertarians”) will maintain that workers voluntarily agree (“consent”) to be subject to the bosses dictatorship (he writes that “each will only enter into the contractual agreement known as a firm if each believes he will be better off thereby. The firm is simply another example of mutually beneficial exchange.” [Op. Cit., p. 137]). However, this does not stop the relationship being authoritarian or dictatorial (and so exploitative as it is highly unlikely that those at the top will not abuse their power). Representing employment relations as voluntary agreement simply mystifies the existence and exercise of power within the organisation so created.
As we argue further in the section F.3, in a capitalist society workers have the option of finding a job or facing abject poverty and/or starvation. Little wonder, then, that people “voluntarily” sell their labour and “consent” to authoritarian structures! They have little option to do otherwise. So, within the labour market workers can and do seek out the best working conditions possible, but that does not mean that the final contract agreed is “freely” accepted and not due to the force of circumstances, that both parties have equal bargaining power when drawing up the contract or that the freedom of both parties is ensured.
Which means to argue (as right-“libertarians” do) that freedom cannot be restricted by wage labour because people enter into relationships they consider will lead to improvements over their initial situation totally misses the point. As the initial situation is not considered relevant, their argument fails. After all, agreeing to work in a sweatshop 14 hours a day is an improvement over starving to death — but it does not mean that those who so agree are free when working there or actually want to be there. They are not and it is the circumstances, created and enforced by the law (i.e., the state), that have ensured that they “consent” to such a regime (given the chance, they would desire to change that regime but cannot as this would violate their bosses property rights and they would be repressed for trying).
So the right-wing “libertarian” right is interested only in a narrow concept of freedom (rather than in freedom or liberty as such). This can be seen in the argument of Ayn Rand that ”Freedom, in a political context, means freedom from government coercion. It does not mean freedom from the landlord, or freedom from the employer, or freedom from the laws of nature which do not provide men with automatic prosperity. It means freedom from the coercive power of the state — and nothing else!” [Capitalism: The Unknown Ideal, p. 192] By arguing in this way, right-“libertarians” ignore the vast number of authoritarian social relationships that exist in capitalist society and, as Rand does here, imply that these social relationships are like “the laws of nature.” However, if one looks at the world without prejudice but with an eye to maximising freedom, the major coercive institutions are the state and capitalist social relationships (and the latter relies on the former). It should also be noted that, unlike gravity, the power of the landlord and boss depends on the use of force — gravity does not need policemen to make things fall!
The right “libertarian,” then, far from being a defender of freedom, is in fact a keen defender of certain forms of authority. As Kropotkin argued against a forerunner of right-“libertarianism”:
“The modern Individualism initiated by Herbert Spencer is, like the critical theory of Proudhon, a powerful indictment against the dangers and wrongs of government, but its practical solution of the social problem is miserable — so miserable as to lead us to inquire if the talk of ‘No force’ be merely an excuse for supporting landlord and capitalist domination.” [Act For Yourselves, p. 98]
To defend the “freedom” of property owners is to defend authority and privilege — in other words, statism. So, in considering the concept of liberty as “freedom from,” it is clear that by defending private property (as opposed to possession) the “anarcho”-capitalist is defending the power and authority of property owners to govern those who use “their” property. And also, we must note, defending all the petty tyrannies that make the work lives of so many people frustrating, stressful and unrewarding.
Anarchism, by definition, is in favour of organisations and social relationships which are non-hierarchical and non-authoritarian. Otherwise, some people are more free than others. Failing to attack hierarchy leads to massive contradiction. For example, since the British Army is a volunteer one, it is an “anarchist” organisation! Ironically, it can also allow a state to appear “libertarian” as that, too, can be considered voluntary arrangement as long as it allows its subjects to emigrate freely. So equating freedom with (capitalist) property rights does not protect freedom, in fact it actively denies it. This lack of freedom is only inevitable as long as we accept capitalist private property rights. If we reject them, we can try and create a world based on freedom in all aspects of life, rather than just in a few.

The rot cult
This is just a post archiving what i find on the rot cult the muppet joker (called Kermit throughout this) moved in with
The four "members"/ people who live in what I'm calling "the rot house" are: Athena (the leader of the cult), Sage (the first member), Milton (the second member), and of course Kermit (the clown prince of crime himself).
From Sage and Miltons blogs it is confirmed that they are siblings. Milton states that him and Sage met in a hospital, and that his parents are dead. Sage states that "Our parents aren't dead" and called meeting in the hospital is "a weird way to phrase it" (Im not directly looking at the posts so these aren't word for word).
Sage does state that he met Athena on deviantart. Milton moved in later after being kicked out of/ left their cousins house who he was staying with after his parents kicked him out. Milton, however, is extremely vague when posting so it is hard to tell what he truly means in some situations. It also seems he is deep into the cult due to claiming that he "needs to be punished" and claiming that it isn't a cult or an abusive situation.
The sleeping arrangements goes as follows: Athena gets the only bed with four out of six of the blankets (the other two are earned by the top two members of the house). Kermit sleeps under Athenas bed and has conformed the blanket arrangements on his first night there. Sage sleeps on the couch but has proved that the sleeping arrangements can switch when Athena has been made upset, proven by when Milton got the couch after Sage broke something of Athenas. Milton sleeps in the closet which "The Rot" has been stored.
On one of Kermits blog posts he posted an image of a glass with what looked like it had left over blood in it. he later found what could be blood vials. Milton has responded to asks questioning him if he was anemic do to him posting about him being extremely woozy at times, and Athena has posted responding to an ask saying "Milton > Sage" to which she responded "Only in the terms of blood flavor" (around the 25 july 2024). She has many posts about being a vampire and has even banned Italian food from the home due to it having many recipes that include garlic.
A reddit post was posted by a neighbor titled "WIBTA if i told property management about my smelly neighbors?" where I will post about more in depth later but for now I am just using it for some basic information. Using this post we can definitively know it is an apartment due to the update claiming "The bad news is that the smell is now coming through the vents, and we had to turn off the ac to air out the apartment." the op also states "This usually isn't a problem, but in recent weeks I've noticed the smell of death coming from their door and a fly problem which is slowly becoming a me problem at my place of residence." He goes into some detail on their Tumblr accounts after Athena which he calls A gives hers, Sage's and Milton's accounts to him and inviting him to join the coven.
The reddit post and the Kermit plush rescue arc has also brought to mosts attention that Sage is the only one with a car. Kermit asked Sage to drive him to his moms house believing to have left him there and was planning a break in. he was unaware that Sage didn't have any obligation to drive him back as stated in the house rules Kermit seemed to be unaware of at the time and had to walk back kermitless. Milton has also claimed multiple times that even though they have an etsy shop they do not get the money do to Sage managing thee money.
This part of what I am calling "The Rot Saga" seems to be heating up with Kermit learning that the Kermit plushie was put in the rot for days on end and from what i can see from the blogs from when I am typing this, has most likely to have been burned. Kermit has stated he has stabbed Gerard Way out of Athenas body and I'll wait for more info before writing about any of it.
I also want to add in a theory that the black mold found by Kermit recently is causing some of the things in the house to happen. We don't have much if any indication of how long the mold has been there (I'm not a mold expert), if Athena lived there before the mold showed up, or if she held the beliefs before the mold showed up. However black mold is dangerous and I wouldn't be surprised if it is contributing to all the issues.
I'll try to write more as more things happen.

FEMA Supervisor Fired for Telling Workers to Not Help Trump Supporters.
It's a black woman, like you'd expect.
The individual in question
Based on the doctrine we’ve been indoctrinated with, I would have thought it was good to starve white people.
BBC:
A Federal Emergency Management Agency (Fema) supervisor has been fired for telling staff helping hurricane survivors to skip houses displaying signs supporting Donald Trump. The agency’s head, Deanne Criswell, described the supervisor’s actions as “reprehensible”, saying Fema takes its mission “to help everyone before, during and after disasters seriously”. Although Criswell’s statement on X does not indicate when or where the incident took place, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis said the Division of Emergency Management would be launching an investigation at his direction. DeSantis called the situation “targeted discrimination” of Trump supporters in Florida. Fema staff have been in Florida helping residents recover from Hurricane Milton last month, and needed to survey damage to homes to assess who qualified to apply for federal aid. The Daily Wire reported on Friday that Fema staff had been checking on homes in Lake Placid when they were ordered to skip properties that had yard signs supporting the Republican candidate.
“Trump sign no entry per leadership,” said internal messages in a government system, reports the Daily Wire. “When we got there we were told to discriminate against people,” a whistleblower told the outlet. “It’s almost unbelievable to think that somebody in the federal government would think that’s okay.”
This is really ridiculous.
Who would have even thought something like this was possible?

The first Nobel Prizes were awarded on this day in 1901. Recently, we analyzed two of the seven Nobel Prizes in our collections to see how much gold they contain.
Overview X ray fluorescence spectroscopy is a method of instrumental analysis that allows us to learn about the elemental composition of an object. The process involves emitting very small, focused x-ray beam at a target. When the beam collides with the atoms of the target object, it pushes electrons out of their normal orbit around a nucleus. The resulting space is filled by electrons from other orbitals – a process that results in an affected element emitting its own characteristic X-rays or signature that is then recorded by the device and translated onto a screen in the form of a line graph. Over the last several months, the XRF team has been working to better understand the hardware, software, and data associated with XRF spectroscopy.
During this time, we focused primarily on testing bindings, inks, parchment and pigments. For our inaugural XRF project, however, we wanted to be sure the artifacts tested were easy to manage both in quantity and analysis. Residing among our collections are seven Nobel medals: James Franck (1925), Enrico Fermi (1938), Eugene Wigner (1963), James Cronin (1980), Milton Friedman (1976), Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar (1983) and Ronald Coase (1991). We know that to get clear XRF data the objects we test should be substantial (relatively large and dense), as homogeneous as possible in its composition, and corrosion-free. Given the properties of gold, Nobel medals checked all those boxes. Moreover, we had some legitimate questions XRF spectroscopy could answer.
Questions
First, while we knew that recipients were given more than one copy – an “official” copy made of gold and at least one presentation copy likely plated in gold – we were unsure the exact composition of the presentation copy or if trace metals would be detectable in either copy. As both copies of Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar’s 1983 Nobel medal reside here in Special Collections we hoped XRF testing would provide a clear answer. Our second question related to Nobel medal composition over time. Though we were unsure precisely when the medals we made, we can be sure of the dates they were awarded. If there was a difference in composition over time, even with our somewhat limited sample size, we hoped to determine this with XRF testing. Our final question relates to James Franck’s Nobel Medal. Franck’s medal was suspended in an acidic solution known as aqua regia and hidden among other jars and beakers at the Bohr Institute a short time before the Nazis invaded Denmark. After the war it was reconstituted and recast. We were eager to know if these processes had left any mark on the composition of the Nobel medal and we expected our testing to provide some insight.
Results
It is important to point out that XRF testing is not quantitative. Our results will show the presence of an element but not measure precisely how much of that element exists in the object. The results take the form of a spectra – a line graph for which “peaks” or sharp upward trends indicate the presence of an element. Though out of the scope of this project, semi-quantitative results based on relative intensities or “peak height” of the recorded elements can be determined. A great example of the difference in peak height can be seen in the image “Region of Interest Nobel Copy Comparison”. Here, you can see that Chandrasekhar’s presentation copy spectra (green) has more intense copper and zinc readings than it has for gold and the official copy spectra (red) has a strong gold reading but a nearly imperceptible copper peak. While our XRF testing does not tell us about the orientation of these elements within the object, these results are consistent with our expectations that the official copy was more gold than anything else and the presentation copy was likely a less expensive element plated in gold.
Notably, the only other element with a substantial peak in the official copy is silver. This observation is important for our change over time question. Similar to Chandrasekhar’s official medal, the other official medals’ spectra indicated that gold was the principal element present. However, unlike Chandrasekhar’s official medal, the two earlier official medals (Franck’s and Fermi’s) did not have a silver peak. Rather, they contained a copper peak of similar size to the silver peaks in the medals from the latter half of the century. Given the history of the Franck medal, I think we all kind of hoped we would see some vast difference in composition. Ultimately, we found nothing abnormal. In fact, the Franck medal spectra was very similar to the Fermi medal, copper peak and all.
Final thoughts
The Nobel Prize Project was our first opportunity to combine the skills and knowledge we had been building over the last few months. Even though testing went smoothly, and the results were more or less what we expected, there are still a few lingering questions. Is medal composition consistent across disciplines? How do we explain the shift from copper to silver in official copies? Is this “shift” even a trend, or is it a coincidence? One thing is certain, XRF spectroscopy has enhanced our understanding of the objects in our collections and has encouraged us to pursue new and fascinating questions. If you share an interest in how the materiality of our cultural heritage impacts how we understand, use, and discuss it, I encourage you to look for our future XRF projects.

To effectively protect your asphalt, it’s crucial to first determine the type of crack present, as each kind needs a specific repair approach.
Types of Asphalt Cracks We Repair
Cracks generally fall into two categories: working and non-working.
Non-Working Cracks – These are either vertical or diagonal and extend into the asphalt without any noticeable movement. Unlike working cracks, they don’t expand or contract with temperature shifts, making them easier to fix. Non-working cracks are often caused by temperature fluctuations, traffic, or poor drainage.
Working Cracks – These cracks, whether vertical or horizontal, tend to shift with changes in temperature. Traffic and inadequate drainage can also contribute to these active cracks, which require a more involved repair process due to their movement.

Residents who experienced property damage from Hurricane Helene (September 26, 2024) and Hurricane Milton (October 9, 2024) are invited to attend a special town hall meeting to discuss the impact of these storms, damage assessments, and the importance of complying with floodplain regulations. FEMA will be on staff to discuss Individual Assistance, the FEMA application process, etc. Hernando County Town Hall Meeting on Property Restoration from Storm Damage Date: Tuesday, November 12, 2024Time: 6:00 PMLocation: Weeki Wachee High School, 12150 Vespa Way, Brooksville, FL 34614 Key Topics of Discussion: - Substantial Damage Determination: Damage assessment teams have identified some properties, including those in Special Flood Hazard Areas (AE-flood zones), that may have sustained damage exceeding 50% of their pre-damage value. Properties that meet this threshold are subject to "substantial damage" requirements under the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). - Building Permits and Repairs: If your property has sustained substantial damage, repairs cannot begin without first obtaining the appropriate permits. Hernando County’s Building Department will provide guidance on the permitting process and the necessary pre-inspection steps. - Floodplain Compliance: The meeting will also address the need to bring damaged structures into compliance with flood-resistant construction standards, which include elevating residential buildings at least one foot above the base flood elevation. Non-residential structures must also meet specific elevation or dry flood-proofing requirements. How to Participate: The meeting will provide residents with the opportunity to ask questions and learn more about the damage assessment process, floodplain requirements, and available resources.
