yall ever think Shen Yuan went through like, internet withdrawal after being transmigrated into Shen Qingqiu? Like, he's canonically a NEET shut-in who did nothing but spend his time online, you can't tell me that for the first week or first few weeks of being SQQ he wasn't twitchy.

Like, reaching instinctively to his pockets for a phone that wasn't there, having an obsessive itch in the back of his mind that he should check and see if X or Y novel or webcomic has updated -- only to realize he can't anymore and being irritated by it. Wanting to go and see if there's new posts about this or that, but again realizing that he can't.

When he's bored or uncomfortable or just feels like wanting to escape he tries to go for his phone to distract himself, but oops! Not there anymore, and now he has to find a new and different way to distract himself from his feelings. And going through system notifications, quests, etc only does so much.

And there's that Tetris Effect too. SQQ makes a mistake while writing and instinctively goes to backspace on it except hey-ho that's not a keyboard and now he just dipped his pinkie into a bottle of ink or on a still-drying letter.

With him scrambling to fix his reputation and learn how to be a peak lord, I think his abrupt cold-turkey from all things internet would just be another straw on the camel's back that he promptly Ignores until it goes away on its own after he acclimates to his new surroundings.

I have a theory, very unoriginal but I just want to yap

I feel like part of the reason Kady is such a nothing sandwich of a character is because she didn’t exist in the books.

(Loooong rant that’s kinda aimless but idc I want to talk)

(Hot take I know!!! I’m sure no one’s every thought of this one)

And I know that a lot of the characters are very different from their book counterparts in a lot of ways, but the groundwork was there! The idea of the character, the foundation, had already been written.

Whereas with Kady, I feel like they just threw her in and then… and then what? Sure she’s like, a “bad girl” character… with a… semi-angsty backstory? And sheee’s… dating Penny… and she hasssss mommy issuuues…??? But where do you even go from there? They literally throw her away for like a whole season just because, well, what is there to do with her?

She wasn’t even there for most major season 1 and early season 2 plot points! Then she’s kind of relevant in mid to late season 2, and then in season 3 she disappears again and when she returns her whole plot is centred around penny.

And THEN in season 4 I guess she’s doing… hedge stuff? Where they try to give her agency and make her #empowered but it’s just… weird

Because everyone else is dealing with a body hopping unkillable monster in Eliot’s body, and Kady just… fucks off??? I guess??? I mean she’s doing stuff with the library for a bit but like… why??? I get why she wants to fuck them over but also where did that come from

Like why is she not helping defeat the god monster. That seems like a pretty major issue that she should be more involved with.

I understand that her stuff with the library does ultimately help, but it really did feel like it was just a way to wedge her into the plot somehow. Also, we’re not even talking about season 5. Let’s not open that can of worms.

Idk I guess it just never really feels like… she’s part of the group? She kind of hangs out around the edges, and she’s close with Penny and Julia but other than that kind of just hangs around

Because… she WASNT IN THE BOOK!!! She didn’t exist!!! She wasn’t Julia’s hedge buddy, or Penny’s girlfriend, or anything! “Amanda Orloff” in the books, (who I’m guessing was her vague template??) is the first character to get killed. First beats encounter. She’s meant to be like, an example of “magic is dangerous”. That is her role.

Originally the group dynamic wasn’t WRITTEN to have her in it! So they were winging it.

Most of the other major character plot lines were based in something, but hers just kind of had to be pulled out of thin air- and it feels very strange

I found myself at several points in her story going “Why is she in this show?”

And it feels very, VERY jarring when she is then the person to… choose the song that is QUENTIN’S MEMORIAL?

They spoke like maybe twice. I feel like, I don’t know, ANYONE else in that group should’ve chosen

All this to say, I have empathy for how hard it would be to wedge a new major character into an already very established group dynamic, but then… why did they do it…

The show expresses El's and Will's main arc and desires through their art in s4.

On the one hand, we have Will, who creates a painting for Mike that portrays them and the party together again, as their dnd characters. Of course, it displays Will's desire of belonging again in that friend group, of having what was taken away from him last summer. But, after all, the main focus of the painting is Mike. Because 1, the painting is for Mike after all, and 2, Will himself is telling where his priorities are, by painting a heart on top of him. Mike's the heart, his heart.

On the other hand, with her art (the figures she makes), El portrays Hopper and his cabin, the first place she actually considered a home. This creation is, in a way, for Hopper. Since she obviously can't give it to him directly, it's a tribute to his sacrifice, therefore, it's made for him. That's where her priorities lie: family.

Will's arc, his biggest hopes and desires, are primarily about love, just how he expresses in his art. El's arc, her biggest hopes and desires, are primarily about family, just how she expresses in her art.

So, narratively, who would make more sense to end up in a relationship? The one whose focus is love and belonging (being who he loves one of the reasons he feels as if he doesn't belong) or the one whose focus is family and finding herself?

Esther's main character flaw - her desire for knowledge about any and all of magic - was inspired by the Icarus myth. Being gifted with the one thing she wanted the most, indulging too much in it, crashing and burning when she crosses the line, and dealing with the fallout of going to far. Over and over again in one way or the other.

It was innocent at first, her just wanting to find a way to cast magic - to finally join in the practice that her homeland cherished so - until all of a sudden she could. Before, Esther couldn't have lite a single candle with bring harm upon herself, now she was able to call forth infernos with ease. There was a bit of a learning curve since she was putting the same amount of force behind her spells she was before when she couldn't cast magic - leading to several incidents of property damage - but thankfully Warlic was there to teach her the fundamentals.

Then she started tempering with Chaos magic. On the surface, it was to gain a better understand of how to fight it, but deep down it was her curiosity driving her. There was plenty of safer ways to study Chaos corruption - going to the Sisters of the Dishpan or study the numerous monsters she had to fight - but she wanted a first hand experience with it. Not being corrupted per say - not at first - but to test what can be corrupted and what cant, what was the range of variation of mutations, was there a way to harness Chaos magic safely.

The only incident of Esther flying too close to the sun with her fascination with Chaos magic was the time she stole pure Chaos water from the Sisters of the Dishpan. Originally she was going to test it on things or see if she can make something to wield Chaos magic safely, but then got the idea to drink it. The only reason she didn't was because Drakath showed up suddenly and caused her to spill the water after getting jump scared - which she lamented the lose of (going to make a comic of this later).

And when she finally got to cast Chaos magic, it was in the Chaos Finale and it was something she didn't want anymore and fight against - willing to commit suicide before being corrupted to break the prophecy to open the gate. Watching Alteon slowly succumbing to his corruption and dealing with the fallout when he did - mercy kill him, burying a friend, watching the grief that encompassed the city - and the thought of being in the same position and the unthinkable aftermath of being a Chaos Lord terrified her.

This trauma influenced her approach or reluctance towards the EDoT magic following the Chaos Finale. Finding out she had somehow became a god after razing a place she came to call home, she was petrified of what she could do if she lose control. It didn't help that she was still corrupted and that bleed into her other magic and making them react in unpredictable ways most of the time. Esther would have stopped using magic all together if she wasnt trying to stop the QoM (still haven't played most of that bit, idk what happens).

This lead to her immediately jumping at the chance of learning Order magic in hopes to cure her corruption, and probably would have gone to extremes to do so if Mirror!Drakath wasn't the one who attempt it and who came to the conclusion that Order magic wouldn't cure Chaos magic.

Learning the truth about Malgor and how he was born of her despair and her magic didnt help with her lack of desire to weild the EDoT magic. To her, it was the Chaos Finale all over again - just someone else is causing the destruction. Esther was more relieved than anger when OWO opposed a ban on her use of the EDoT magic and access to the Timestream.

Learning Doom magic echoes a lot of what happens when she wanted to learn Chaos magic. Wanting to learn more to better combat it and find a way to heal Gravelyn (her motivation to even touch doom magic), keeping her meeting and lessons with the Mysterious Stranger a secret from those around her despite the dangers, and the possibility of the ruinous fallout if she looses the tiny bit of control over it. She's still scared of going to far again - from her own experience with tempting with forces she shouldn't and using the tale of Sepluchure as a warning call - but she still has the desire to understand Doom magic in it's entirety.

Vin hated filling her metalminds, which was a damn shame.

Truly, it was. Because Fruchemy and Allomancy had only existed together in one other person before Vin, and he hadn’t exactly left behind detailed records of what he was capable of before getting speared through the heart. Vin had looked. She’d asked Kelsier when he poured over documents written by The Lord Ruler, by the Obligators, and the odd Inquisitor. She’d skimmed over the manuscripts herself, as best she could anyway, she hated reading almost as much as filling her metalminds. It made her head hurt.

Which was its own damn shame! Not the reading making her head hurt part, that was fine, she didn’t have the patience for it anyway. It was the lack of information that was driving Vin crazy. What happened if you burned a metal and tapped a comparable metalmind? What would happen if you burned a metalmind? What if you did both at the same time?

Vin wanted to know.

She needed to know.

“Why not fill a metalmind and take your own notes?” Kelsier asked, looking up from yet another stack of documents as Vin peered not so subtly over his shoulder. He was hunting for his own answers, about the missing Atium and the parts of Allomancy The Lord Ruler had kept hidden.

Vin scowled. “My handwriting is terrible, I wouldn’t be able to read them. Besides, I’m too busy to fill any metalminds right now.”

“Too busy?” Kelsier laughed. “With what? We’re hardly doing anything strenuous right now.”

“I’m working on the puzzle Spook showed me.” Vin directed her scowl to the infernal tangle of string looped around her fingers. A cat’s cradle, Spook had called it. It had been a lot easier to solve when he was walking her through it. “So I’m busy.”

Kelsier raised his single eyebrow. “Then don’t fill anything that saps your mental strength. Fill pewter or steel or one of the other physical metalminds.”

Vin snorted a laugh. “That sounds like a good way to get myself killed. We’ve had so many assassins in the city lately.”

“It also sounds like a good way to find out how fast you could run between gates while burning pewter and tapping a steelmind,” Kelsier said with a smile. “Or to find out how much you can hear if you burned a tinmind.”

Vin paused. She wanted to know.

“One hour,” Kelsier said, catching Vin’s eye. “That’s really all you need to test something small tonight. I promise, nothing will happen to you while you fill your metalmind.”

One hour. That wasn’t so long, she could do that. Then she could find out what she could do.

“Promise?”

“I promise.”

She dropped from the rooftop, down on Kelsier below, Pushing on a spray of coins. As they started to fly, she stopped Pushing on all but one.

The instant she felt Kelsier’s counteracting Push touch the coin she had in her control, she tapped the ironmind she’d filled that afternoon.

Her feet cracked the cobblestone where she was standing, mist coiling around her limbs. With her weight now more than doubled, Vin outweighed Kelsier by a significant margin, and the single coin snapped back in his direction.

Kelsier darted out of the way, watching as the coin slammed into, and cracked, the wall behind him.

“That,” he said, approaching the coin alongside Vin as she hurried forward to inspect the wall. “Is going to pose a problem for a lot of people.”

Vin smiled as she plucked the coin from the small crater is had created in the stone. “That’s the idea,” she said. “No one would think they’d lose a Pushing match to me. It’ll be easier to bait them into it.”

Kelsier ruffled her hair. “I’m proud of you, Vin.”

“What?”

“I’m proud of you,” Kelsier repeated. “I know filling metalminds is hard for you, but you did and look at what you can do.” He gestures to the wall.

Vin eyed the wall, turning the now slightly bent coin over in her hand. Filling metalminds was nerve wracking, but she’d felt better with Kelsier nearby. And now that she’d had a proper taste of what she could do…

“I think I’d like to fill another one tomorrow.”

I always get self conscious when people talk about the amount of thought the goes/went into their art because there is.

there is no upper processing happening when I'm designing a character or background. my hand starts moving and my brain shuts off. I recognize there was probably a point in my life where this WASN'T the case but. like. it's why my art is like. mostly flat and lifeless. my art is never intended to tell a story because when I intend to I get angry/frustrated to the point of wanting to break shit because it's not going right. and I've tried to tell stories with my art both comics and stand alone pieces and it all feels fake or flat or.

I've TRIED to start and finish a piece where I've made conscious choices beyond "does this look good/right" and "am I being offensive in ways I'm aware of with anything here" but it just. makes me want to scream.

I learned people told stories with their art and I tried to and I stopped drawing for 5 years despite having. before that point been doing art studies for 8 to 10 hours a day for. 2 years.

I mostly just think it's because I have nothing to. say.

Do you think Humphrey would have been a difficult man to be married to on a personal or political level? I guess both those aspects are entwined, but I always thought that he and Eleanor had a very stable marriage for their time :(

On a personal level. He does seem to have been quite a volatile personality, he does seem to have carried grudges and frustrated dreams of self-aggrandizement, and he does seem to have taken everything personally. But this is all drawn from his political career, where he does seem to have been the equivalent of a dumpster fire. He might not have been able to separate the political from the personal, he might have have been taking his "work" problems "home" with him.

On the other hand, he might have been a very different friend and husband than he was politician. His relationship with Eleanor was very different than the relationship he had with someone like Cardinal Beaufort or John, Duke of Bedford. He chose to marry Eleanor, in a decision that had to be motivated by personal reasons. Historians still don't really know why he gained the reputation of "Good Duke Humphrey" when he was a political dumpster fire so it's possible that his public and private selves were very different than his political self.

I do think he loved Eleanor. Everything about their marriage and relationship suggests he felt a strong emotional attachment to her. But we don't know a lot about how their relationship functioned (the least reliable of his biographers suggest he took other lovers during their marriage though I've not found anyone else repeating this idea outside of novelists; Gemma Hollman suggests Eleanor was affected by the ease at which Jacqueline of Hainault had been abandoned), and we have no evidence at all about how Eleanor felt about him (this isn't unusual, given the patriarchal nature of medieval society - we have very little evidence about how women felt about their husbands and/or lovers). Eleanor may have loved him back or her feelings may have been more complicated - I hope it was the former. But I also feel the need to be cautious - Humphrey loving her doesn't necessarily mean he was a good husband to her. I hope he was and indeed, if Frank Millard is right that his "Good Duke Humphrey" rested on the genuineness of his friendship to the people he counted as his friends, he might well have been.

Me when they are the sisters ever: 😭😭😭 They came out soooo freaking well. I won’t lie, they took me a thousand years to finish but through the constant support from all of my buds (and my latent bisexuality), we made it 😤

Hopefully you guys know the deal by now: design choices, easter eggs, and (NEW!) closeup shots below the read more. ⬇️

I wanted Ace to have a very down-to-earth vibe and looked at Aussie beach-girls, coastal cowgirls, and vaqueras for reference. (IDK, I’ve just always envisioned Ace as part-Australian🌺 and Mexican 🏴‍☠️) Her clothing choices are mostly natural or utilitarian materials like the painted wooden beads on her top, her woven fabric and leather belts, and her denim jumpsuit. I gave her bikini top a zen-garden kind of feel because I read the first Ace’s Story Novel and I loved how idyllic and peaceful they made Sixis Island sound so I wanted to invoke that in some way.

Speaking of her painted wooden beads, they hang off the back of her top and represent her connection to Sabo and Luffy. They watch her back once she sets sail. She only wears one red glass bead earring because the other one got ripped out of her ear when a child, leaving her earlobe torn (don’t think about it too much 😢). Also, YES! she does wear a hibiscus flower just like Rouge (because I hate you and I want to make you cry, muhwahahahaha).

Also, I really wanted her to have super textured curly hair that licks behind her like flames. I am always considering whether or not a character should have long hair or not because I don’t want it to be a hindrance if they’re in a fight (or if they ARE a fighter with long hair, how to they avoid an enemy making use of that?). Ace is, of course, a Logia-type Devil Fruit User so I think she wouldn’t have trouble with people grabbing it LOL I get the feeling that she doesn’t take very good care of it even though it looks amazing. Like you’d think it would be soft and bouncy just by looking at it but if you ever get the chance to run your fingers through it, it’s a total rat’s nest and there’s sand and food all up in it. She still falls asleep while eating 😂 but she tries her best to only do it around people she can trust (woman moment 😔).

Honestly, her design is not that different from Ace’s canon look. It feels really vital to Ace’s character to have a lot of skin showing. And he’s always hanging all over himself with his hips all cocked like the weight of the world is too much to stand up straight. It is certainly not my OWN preference to make her an absolute smoke show. That’s just the character, okay? (I’m partially lying and the proof is that I turned the emblem on Ace’s hat strap into a sternum tattoo for no other reason than that it is sexy af.)

Now for Sabo, I’ve made her very girly. I tried putting her in pants or something more militant but she told me that she’d wear the big poofy sleeves and hiked-up ruffled skirt. I think Sabo has always had a strong grasp on his fashion sense and individual flair and I truly believe that his personal style is one of the major influences for the rest of the Revolutionary Army resulting in the very flashy, queer, steampunk aesthetic (aside from Dragon’s plain-ass cloak). So of course I had to implement her nonconformist look when reimagining her as a woman and dress her up to the nines.

I’ve given her very ornate jewelry that is there to tell a story, even if she herself doesn’t know it. I like to think she picks up stuff from her travels that resonate with her, such as a damaged set of earrings with one stone missing or red cup-shaped shells featuring three nestled pearls. Another accessory that cannot go unmentioned is her dragon claw hat pin that keeps her top hat resting on top of her hair (and is definitely used as a weapon when the situation simply doesn’t call for trusty metal pipe). She also has a veil that obscures her prominent facial scar. I imagine she’s not very keen on the reminder of the incident from her childhood that took away her memories. I also kept her chipped toothed because 1) it’s fucking adorable and 2) is a visual reminder that she no longer aligns herself with the nobility who would have gotten such a thing fixed. She is so poised in almost every outward facet of her life from her dignified role as the Chief of Staff to the elegant materials in her clothing that it can be easy to forget she was also a rough and tumble forest dweller. Every time Koala remembers this, he lets out the biggest sigh.

Her hair is inspired by Gibson Girls and Elizabeth Swann from the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie. I wanted it to be fussy and tidy but fall apart when she’s in moments of distress. For example, when she remembers her sisters, her hair starts to look like Ace’s flaming mane. I’m so in love with her, I think she looks like an adorable little porcelain doll that would fuck you up. I made an effort to keep her eyes a little bit manic. I get lost in her steely black orbs (and also Ace’s warm brown ones, but we’re talking about Sabo rn).

For this series of character designs, I wanted the expressions and outfits to be aligned with the canon plot but I don’t know if I have the heart to kill fem!Ace in my AU. I’m too attached and ASL has suffered enough!!!!! But Ace’s death is also a major defining moment for Luffy so it feels disingenuous to completely avoid it. Also a huge aspect of Sabo’s character is carrying on Ace’s will and I have so many thoughts about how the Dressrosa Colosseum scene would play out if they were all women. Oh well, I’ll cross that tragic bridge when I get to it. I’m definitely going to draw some Modern AU Girl Piece ASL though. They deserve to hang out with no stakes 😭 They are sisters!!!
