With a Price
Warnings: magical exhaustion, collapse, shaking, unconsciousness
"That was incredible, Whumpee!" Caretaker shouted as they watched the wave from the river crest over the hill with the invaders. By the time the waters receded, there was no trace of the army that had come to wipe them out. The water retreated back to the river and settled once more, as though nothing had ever happened.
"G-G-Good," Whumpee mumbled as they took a shaking step towards Caretaker.
Caretaker had been planning on proposing a celebration with the rest of the meager force of rebels they had found themself with, but seeing Whumpee's pale sweaty face had them rethinking everything. "What's wrong, Whumpee? What did you do?"
Whumpee's limbs trembled, a fine tremor moving through their whole body. "Wh-Wh-What hhhhhhhad-d-d-d-d t-t-t-t-ooooooo be d-d-d-d-one."
Caretaker reacted without thinking as Whumpee's shaking knees gave out and they collapsed forward. Caretaker caught Whumpee without a second thought. The village's elder had always said magic came with a price. Whumpee had used a lot of magic.
"Talk to me, Whumpee. Tell me what's wrong. Whumpee!" Caretaker urged desperately as Whumpee went completely boneless in their arms. "Whumpee! Say something!"
Whumpee didn't respond to Caretaker's shaking. Didn't respond to Caretaker's shouts and pleas. They lay as a complete dead weight in Caretaker's arms, completely unresponsive to the shouts of triumph and joy around them.
"HELP!" Caretaker roared. "SOMEBODY HELP! GET THE HEALER!" What had been the price of their victory? And what price was Whumpee paying now? "PLEASE!"

Being sick, Phoenix decided, sucked. Feeling as though they were going to keel over at work because they felt like they could puke at any second was decidedly just as bad

a full week of whumptober is already done!!! i'm pretty surprised at how fast this is going but i really enjoy making prompt lists like this :D
ONLY FOR EMERGENCIES: Unconventional Weapon | Magic with a Cost | "It's us or them."
A Whumpee whose magic is uncontrollable when used. Nobody dares to get close with them or even talk to them for fear of getting hurt. The only person willing enough to go near them is Whumper, who just found themselves the perfect test subject...
Caretaker has a magic type that is incredibly powerful, but sends the user into a coma for the next few days, which is why it is reserved for emergency use. When Whumpee is in danger, Caretaker doesn't give a second thought as to how they'll be affected: all they can think of is Whumpee.
"If they want to play dirty, so will we." "Please, don't do this!" "It's us or them, Teammate. If this is what keeps us alive, so be it."
i'm so tired so i'm gna snooze now :] goodnight and see you tomorrow for day 8!!

Whumptober day 7 : Only for emergencies
Magic with a cost
Of course I was going to do this one
Whumpee always held back when they fought against their opponents, but when the life of someone they care is put in danger, there is no other choice…
This is set in a fantasy world, Whumpee is a half-dragon and Caretaker is a human. Also it’s ambiguous on the characters age but Whumpee looks round 25 (their apparence is human-like but they have dragon traits still) and Caretaker is 23.
In a way, both characters are Whumpee and Caretaker to each other
TW : Burns, Suicide, Character death
❆
Whumpee never really cared about others. Simple humans died easily, they were just so fragile. Whumpee had seen countless wars before too. It’s always the same mistakes, humans killing each others. Whumpee wished for the day humans would all just disappear. Which makes them wonder : « Why am I protecting this one’s life ? ». That human is Caretaker, they both met at [Town]’s inn where Caretaker’s parents worked, and had gotten along pretty well. More than Whumpee expected.
And in that moment right now, they wished they had just listened to their brain instead of their heart. Because Caretaker’s town was the scene of a violent battle and their enemies were winning. Caretaker of course wanted to defend the town, but it was no use in trying to. The whole place was already in flames, so was the inn. The smell of smoke grew heavier and Whumpee had to do something before Caretaker would get seriously hurt.
So instead they will be the one to get hurt.
They turned to Caretaker and said,
« I have an idea, which you might not like… »
Caretaker looked at them, confused and worried.
« It’s gonna be okay though, for you at least. You’ll be fine. »
Whumpee extended their left arm toward the flames and they started being drawn into a little ball. The palm of Whumpee’s hand was already starting to get burnt but they didn’t mind it too much, focusing on Caretaker. At the sight, Caretaker looked more scared than just worried.
« W-wait what are you doing ? »
The half-dragon smiled at them and answered,
« Just a little trick I learned to do with my dragon magic. »
The ball of fire grew bigger as the flames kept being absorbed by it and slowly, Whumpee’s whole arm was getting burnt. And the heat was so strong that no one could get close to the two of them. Yet Caretaker remained fine.
« I put a seal on you, against my magic, unfortunately I can’t do the same for myself. And my human side is too weak to handle this kind of magic. » Whumpee explained.
Their entire arm was now completely burnt, and it started extending on the rest of their body. Caretaker grabbed them and tried to pull them away from the ball, to no avail.
« I don’t want you to die ! Please just… » Caretaker pulled harder, « Don’t do it ! »
Tears fell, from both of their eyes. There was no other choice. If Whumpee didn’t use their magic and Caretaker and them left, they would be tracked down and killed. With their good hand, they cupped Caretaker’s face and kissed them. One quick kiss.
« Live for me please. »
And in a second, the flames were thrown into every directions. Caretaker’s closed their eyes, and one they reopened them, they saw that what they were holding was now Whumpee’s body. Their entire left side was burnt, extending a bit to the right side. Everything was silent. Even Caretaker’s cries for Whumpee to come back were silent.
They laid down on the ground next to the body of their almost lover. Live for them, but they had lost everything. They had no reason to live without them.
❆
This technically open ended. Since it’s a fantasy world, you can imagine Caretaker finding a way to revive Whumpee. Or not, maybe they are led into a fake lead, or it’s just straight up not possible. Whichever you prefer

Tastes of Whumptober: Day 7
Everybody thank @brutal-nemesis for her cave knowledge and help today!
If you've been sitting here saying "wow boa, this stuff is great, but I really need a character based off the warlock class of DND struggling to serve their patron!" then you're really gonna like today's writing and you should buy a lottery ticket.
Content warning: Claustrophobia in the form of a very narrow cave. Take care of yourselves!
Magic with a Cost
The walls of the cave were definitely getting narrower now. Where there had once been enough room to stretch out his arms, his fingertips now brushed against the rough, stone walls on either side.
The adventurer sent the shadows of these depths away, leaving an otherworldly light. Controlling the darkness was strange in that way. If he banished it, there could only be light in its absence.
He unfurled the parchment on which a very drunk bar customer had scribbled the map of this cave system. It occurred to him that he should’ve tried harder to persuade them, rather than simply buying drinks until he got what he wanted. But it wasn’t his fault his patron had been so stingy with their powers recently.
Well. Not entirely his fault.
If he’d read the disjointed scribbles of ink correctly, this crevice would lead to a wider cavern housing the element his patron was after.
Pushing forward the walls narrowed further, just as promised, until they were pushing against his sides. They were moist, wetting his cloak just enough to feel the clammy chill this far underground, but the grainy texture still chafed against bare arms. He wrapped his cloak around himself, sliding further into the crevice, finally able to spot an opening just ahead.
His shoulders were too wide after a while and he sidled ahead instead, but then even the cloak was too thick to pass through. Reluctantly, he unclasped it and regretted his sleeveless style. Though usually functional in conflict to avoid overheating, his teeth were now chattering and his arms and shoulders were being scraped raw.
With one final lunge, he emerged in a round cavern. It still felt remarkably like a hallway, longer than it was wide, but he could finally breathe again. He summoned a fire for light this time, remembering his instructions.
Call me when you arrive. I don’t need you messing about with what’s rightfully mine.
He hadn’t quite understood the explanation of why his patron couldn’t travel here themself. The pitch dark of a cave was, naturally, suited to them. But they’d chastised him with explanations about natural light sources, potency of shadows, and how his humanity allowed him to ignore such discrepancies.
But fire, as a sister to the sun, was a suitable replacement for her.
Flames danced along the walls revealing what he hadn’t paid attention to before: sloped floors dipping down to a pool in the middle of the room. It couldn’t have been more than a meter deep, and the water was clear all the way to the bottom.
And then he was pulled away from it by a familiar dizziness as his own shadow lurched and twisted. Of course, rather than possessing one of the many eligible shadows around him, his patron had to make their entrance unsettling. His consciousness blurred at the edges until they’d adjusted their physical form to their liking, towering over him with a grin.
“Ahhhhh… and here I was thinking you’d never call me, baby!” They stretched dramatically, hissing sounds and tendrils of smoke imitating the cracking of joints.
“I would never call you that. And you’d be much grumpier if you just made the journey I did.” He was having trouble hiding the goosebumps and smeared blood on his arms.
“You are my spiritual sugar baby if we’re being technical. You’d call me that if it meant I restored your full access to my power.” Their patron laughed, knowing he had no good response to that.
“Well, get going with your thing then. I’d like to stop begging for every miniscule bit of help.”
“Yes, about that. Where the hells have you brought me?”
“Where ol’ drunkie told me the Treasure of Elmstern Cave is,” he enunciated sarcastically.
“I told you what to do if you wanted my powers of persuasion.”
“And I wasn’t going to give a sermon on a demonic entity to the whole bar, including the guy I needed details from.”
When his patron touched him in this plane of reality, it was delayed. Their touches were firm and cold, but disconnected from their body. The movement simply happened faster than this realm could process.
All that to say: when they slapped him, he couldn’t see it coming. A chilly wind preceded harsh contact, only after which did he see the followthrough of their hand before tumbling to the ground.
“I am not demonic.”
“Yeah? You’re definitely acting like it!” He pushed himself back up, only to find his patron’s manifestation standing directly against him. “I know you’re not a demon, but those without pacts aren’t very understanding.”
“That doesn’t excuse you speaking in such a way.”
“Then just take your fucking treasure and leave me be!” He pushed them back, tired of the cheap intimidation tactics.
“Oh, I would have.” Their tone dropped.
That made their beneficiary freeze.
“And why not?”
“It’s not here.” A flinch.
“But they said-”
“I don’t care what story the town gossip spun for you,” they interrupted, their voice booming and echoing off the walls. “I’ve warned you. Continuous failures prove to me that the essence of your soul may be much more useful than your precious little mortal existence.”
“I-I-” They stalked forward, forcing him to wade into the pool. “I didn’t anticipate the difficulty of your tasks. I’m not useless just because I’m not some… some hotshot who’s been doing nothing since the birth of the universe.” Frustration bit into his words. If they wanted to play rough, he’d do the same.
“Be careful what you say, human.”
He was choking, and then a hand wrapped around his throat to add the pressure that cut off his words. They were standing in the middle of the pool now, and adrenaline couldn’t stop him tensing up from the freezing cold.
“Prove to me that your pathetic life is worthy of preservation.”
Their hand plunged him into darkness.
The water was all encompassing, seeping into each crevice of his being. The grip of his patron loosened and his body breathed before he could stop it, forcing liquid down his throat and up his nose. His feet had left the shallow floor at some point during the struggle, and he couldn’t orient himself. Desperate hands clawed at rocks and his movements kicked up silt, making his eyes absolutely useless.
Somehow, his grip found purchase and his head met air, desperately coughing up water so he could breathe it in again. How much had he swallowed? He didn’t even remember doing so.
Tears came next: relief, horror, exhaustion, all of it wracking his body as if he had energy to be wasting on this.
Then the water rippled behind him and a hand found his shoulder.
“Oh, you think you’re done already. How cute.”

Challenge #03774-J121: Terms and Conditions
The most important books are the ones you have never opened. -- Lessons
"Welcome," said the voice, "to the Library of All Knowledge. What would you like to learn?"
The first impulse was to say all of it. So many dreams could come true. Each one of these books could impart a technique. Gift a mind with a skill. Yet there was not enough time to read up on how to fulfill all of his dreams.
He wanted to do so much, but he didn't have enough time. The idea came with the realisation. "Can I learn how to be immortal?"

If you have the talent - most have some, and it can be trained - and the knowledge of how a spell is cast, it has no cost. You can make a flying carpet that is good for fifty, hundred, five hundred miles. You can pull up all large stones from a new field, and plow it with a single spell.
You can hurl large rocks at enemies, or arrows straight into game when hunting.
Then, strange explosions begin to happen, seemingly without cause. Some small, some large enough to flatten villages and kill everyone in them.
It happens in neighbouring kingdoms as well, up to a line, beyond which the inexplicable explosions stop.
Centuries pass, and you learn where the explosions seem to be concentrated, and build your cities elsewhere. Meanwhile, new discoveries and developments make ocean voyages safer, and your sailors venture farther and farther afield, discovering new lands and people.
Some know magic, some don't. Eventually your sailors reach a land on the other side of the world, where they find a civilization that only discovered magic a few hundred years ago.
When this is reported, your philosophers and astronomers excitedly begin to make calculations. Before long, they can reveal that magic does indeed come at a cost.
When a spell is activated, all the energy it expends during its span is also released immediately, in the exact opposite spot on the globe.

Event Info & Rules
WHUMPTOBER is a month-long, prompt-based creation challenge (think: Inktober, but whumpier). There are 31 official themes this year - one for each day of the month - which can be used, skipped, or combined in any way you’d like. They are meant to serve as inspiration without being taken literally (e.g. you don’t have to include the exact wording of prompts into your work). Feel free to run rampant on interpretation. For example, if the prompt is “flame", you could create something with reference to a candle/campfire, your character could have suffered a burn, or the flame could be a reference to an ‘old flame’ - an old relationship. It’s truly down to you!
In total, there are 4 prompts for each day. These are optional suggestions and can be used in conjunction with the theme, or as options/alternatives. We want to give everyone as much creative freedom as possible, as well as increase event accessibility for folks with triggers and squicks. There is also a list of 15 alternative prompts that can be subbed in for any day, again to give participants as much creative freedom as possible.
Creators can PRODUCE work in any media they choose, including but not limited to: writing, visual artwork, photo/video/audio edits, paper crafts and elaborate recommendation lists (not just a list of links). Creators can PARTICIPATE as much or as little as they want (i.e. you don’t have to do ALL the prompts if you don’t want to) and prompts can be used in any order. They are also free to use even after the event ends.
When uploading Whumptober content to your blog, be sure to tag it with:
#whumptober2024 …..(the event tag)
#no.1, #no.2, #no.3, …..(theme number)
#bruises, #stabbing, …..(the theme or specific prompt you chose)
#altprompt …..(if you use an altprompt, tag the post with the number of the prompt you replace)
#fandom or #OC, …..(ironman, original content, oc, etc.)
#medium …..(gifs, fic, podcast, art, etc.)
#teeth, #etc …..(trigger warnings & any additional tags. Keep in mind not to add “tw” in front but only use the word/trigger itself)
#nsfwhump …..(only for nsfw content)
#your own tags go here
PLEASE BE DILIGENT WITH YOUR TAGGING. Only properly tagged posts are considered for archiving on the official @whumptober-archive blog. They must be tagged in the order above. An elaborate post about our tagging system can be found [here]
Unfortunately, due to the sheer number of participants in recent years, we cannot guarantee your work will be archived. A random selection of properly tagged posts from all genres will be reblogged each day.
Whumpers who produce content for 31 total theme days are considered event completionists and will be tagged in a masterpost at the end of the month. A form will be published at the beginning of November asking you to tell us if you completed. This is based on trust and we will not check this.
Frequently Asked Questions
Please read this before you send an ask!
TIMELINE
July: Trope voting form released. Late August: Prompt list is released for at least four weeks of preparation time. Tropes cannot be posted earlier than August 25th because of Moderator obligations in real life. (But, you know, go ahead and start writing/drawing, and add the themes in later, if you want!) September: Do as much or as little on your works as you want. You can prepare everything in advance or let September go by with vibes and start working in October. It’s up to you. October 1st: Challenge begins! A storm of whump breaks upon us all! During this time, some posts will be reblogged to the whumptober archive blog. We open the yearly AO3 collection for posting (optional). November 1st: The challenge is officially over! Completionist form opens for those who want to be included in the hall-of-fame. Early November: We release completionist and participant badges, solicit feedback, and post a hall-of-fame list of completionists by the 10th.
PARTICIPATION AND COMPLETION
Q: What counts as participation? Create or continue at least one work inspired by one of this year’s prompts. Q: What counts as completion? Creating work(s) inspired by at least one prompt from each day (or alts), for a total of 31 unique prompts. Q: Do I need to create 31 works? No. You can, if you want. Or you can create one work that you add to every day with a new prompt. Or several works that combine prompts. You can also update an existing work by adding new material with the current prompts. Q: Do I need to post my works somewhere to be a completionist or a participant? No. Q: How do you know I actually completed the challenge? We’ll take your word for it! Q: Do I have to finish my work(s) to be a completionist? No, you can post WIPs. And you’re not obligated to finish them in October, but if you want it to count towards being a completionist, you must have completed 31 prompts by the end of the month. So for example, if you’re writing a long fic and you fit 31 different prompts into the writing you did in October, it’s okay if that fic isn’t finished by the time October ends, you’ll still be a completionist. Q: Is co-writing/illustrating allowed? Yes, absolutely, and it would count towards being a completionist for both/all of you. Q: Is there a min/max limit on word count for written works? No. Q: Is there a min/max limit of quality for art? No. Q: Do I have to do something each day to be a completionist? No. You can skip days whenever you want, and as long as 31 daily prompts (or alts) are in your works done in October, you can be a completionist. For example, if you wrote a 1000-word ficlet that covers prompts in days 2, 3, and 17, you can check all three days off your list even though it’s only one work. Q: Is this challenge just for fics? No! Artworks, GIFsets, headcannons, rec lists, poetry, moodboards, or any other creative work is encouraged. Q: Can I combine Whumptober with other creation challenges? Absolutely, as long as the other challenges allow it too.
PROMPTS
Q: How do the prompts work? There are FOUR prompts per day: a theme and three ideas. You can use one, two, three, or all four prompts for each day. If you don’t like any of the daily prompts, you can substitute one of the ALT prompts instead. Q: How strictly/literally should we interpret the prompts? As literally or as figuratively as you want. For example, if the theme is WATER, that could mean drowning, waterboarding, raining, swimming, take place underwater, be lost at sea, construct a metaphor about a character’s mood that changes like a flowing river, crying, or whatever else you can think of that fits that theme. Q: Can I combine prompts? Is there a limit on how many? No limit and combine as many as you’d like. If you create a work that checks off multiple prompts, that work will count for a fill of multiple prompts. You need to address 31 different prompts to be an official completionist, but you don’t have to produce 31 separate works.
WORKS
Q: What’s whump? Hurting a character, whether that’s physically, emotionally, intellectually, psychologically, or any other way you can think of. Comfort afterwards is optional. Angst is emotional whump, so it counts. Q: How do I know if it’s whumpy enough? If your character is just mildly inconvenienced, it probably needs more whump. However, no participant has to prove whumpiness to the mods. Whatever you write is up to you. Q: What kind of characters can I create for? Anything. Generic “whumpee,” OC, PC, NPC, major characters, minor characters, or whatever you want. There are no limits. Q: Does it have to take place in a specific fandom? No, you can create works for your own worlds or for fandoms or for both. You can also create more generic or pan-fandom works. You can do cross-overs or use OCs, whatever you want. Q: Can I create AI-created works? We will not reblog or promote any works we know to be generative AI-created. Q: Is there anything we’re not allowed to write? As long as it contains whump and is based on our prompts, it’s fine. Please courtesy tag your works if you post them so people who follow the #whumptober2024 tag can filter according to their preferences. Q: What about sex, minor characters, and potentially disturbing content? You can create whatever works are legal in your country and post them accordingly. Please courtesy tag anything you think might be objectionable if you post to Tumblr so people who follow the #whumptober2024 tag can filter according to their preferences.
POSTING
Q: Where can I post my work? Post where and how you want. You don’t even have to (cross)post it to Tumblr. Just keep in mind if it’s not on Tumblr we will not be able to add it to the blog archive. There is an AO3 archive for Whumptober 2024, as well as the parent collection for works completed outside of the event. Q: Can I start posting early? You can, but this is an October event and wouldn’t it be more fun with everyone doing it at the same time? We won’t be reblogging any work predating October 1st. Q: Can I post late? Yes. For the sake of our hardworking Post Fairies, only a day’s themes will be reblogged to @whumptober-archive each day of October. But you can post whenever. Some of us are still working on and posting Whumptober fics from years ago. Q: Do I have to use your tags? Only on Tumblr and only if you want us to reblog your work on @whumptober-archive. Q: How do I have my works reblogged to the archive? Properly tagged posts will be reblogged to @whumptober-archive. If you want the official archive blog to reblog you, post on Tumblr and tag correctly (see this FAQ link for more info on tagging). Please note not all posts will be reblogged each day. Q: Can we @ you? For questions and comments, of course. We’ll be getting a flood of notifications, so if you really want us to see something send an ask. Q: Can I cross post on other blogs? Yes, multiple platforms and blogs are perfectly acceptable, as long as they allow cross-posting (to us). You can also post different works to different accounts under different names, without posting them everywhere at once. If you post some works under your main and others under an alt blog, that’s fine for completionist purposes. Q: Can I upload/repost my Whumptober content to other social media platforms? Of course! We’ve created an AO3 Collection to archive any fics posted there, which can be found here. The blog is the official archive, so please respect the personal boundaries of any whumpers in your social circle (don’t out anyone as a participant who would prefer not to be outed).
Most importantly, have fun, create, and enjoy all the whump posted this October!

DPxDC When You Are Suddenly Dating a Princess
This prompt is a variation of good!GIW AU (read here), but that's an excuse because I just wanted badass Jasmine Fenton and her good boy Jason Todd.
"Jason?"
The voice catches him off-guard. Not because he doesn't know it, no, quite on the opposite - he knows that voice very well, he's just heard it this morning when his beautiful girlfriend kissed him on the cheek and left for work.
It's just that he didn't expect to hear it at a closed auction full of magic artifacts, two states away from Gotham, and in a room full of rich-ass people from all around the world.
He turns around.
Jazz is looking at him with an expression of pleasant surprise, black off-shoulder silk dress with teal accents draping her figure all the way down to the floor - it's kind of reminiscent of Greek togas, with high waist and lots of folds on the skirt. It also makes his girlfriend look even taller than she is, which, Jason is fairly certain, was intentional.
She is also wearing a necklace on her neck, and just by one look at it, Jason knows that it costs at least five times more than the apartment they live in.
"Jazz?" He breathes out, astonished, but then catches himself and puts on a smile, "You look stunning." This is not the time to argue or ask questions; he is on a mission. And it's a time sensitive one, so no matter how curious he is, it can wait till later. They do live together, after all.
"Thank you," the girl smiles, and then briefly turns her head to a tall man in a very expensive dark blue suit standing beside her, "If you excuse me," she nods with an apologetic smile in the corner of her lips, and the man smiles back and takes a step away. Meanwhile, Jazz approaches Jason and casually places a hand on his elbow.
"Mind telling me what are you doing here?" She questions, and, wait, that was supposed to be his line! Jason blinks and shakes his head, snapping out of his stupor.
He can't exactly say, 'Constantine asked Batman for a favor because he knows the man is rich as fuck, so now Jason has to either buy or steal an ancient dagger for some bullshit magic ritual because he was the only one free tonight and John really needs that dagger and that ritual and Bruce owes him a favor, unfortunately'. Jazz doesn't know he is a vigilante/crime lord in redemption. She might suspect he is - that girl is perceptive on par with mind readers - but Jason never straightforwardly told her, and she never brought it up herself.
So, instead, he goes, "Sightseeing."
Jazz raises one eyebrow and pointedly looks around the dimly lit room full of magic users, rich collectors, socialites, and other shady individuals. Jason keeps smiling. Eventually, the redhead sighs and looks away, taking a step forward and guiding him through the auction at a leisurely pace.
"Looking for anything in particular?" She tries again, and Jason debates if he should answer her. On one hand, his head is buzzing with thousands of questions, starting with 'how did you even make it here when your shift at Arkham ended two hours ago' and finishing with 'to which group of shady individuals do you belong'. On the other hand, she clearly does belong here if her confident posture and outfit are taken into account.
And she is his girlfriend. Has been one for two years now. Maybe it's time to share some secrets.
"An obsidian knife with an owl on the handle," he finally says, and Jazz hums.
"A Tecpatl?" She clarifies, and Jason doesn't even feel that surprised by her sudden knowledge of Aztec culture. He nods. Jazz gives him a thoughtful glance, "And how important is it for you to have it?"
"To the point where I'm prepared to steal it if I have to," he laughs, but judging by the look on Jazz's face, she gets that he is only half-joking. She narrows her eyes at him:
"Is it for you, or for your, um, friends on the orbit?" She asks, briefly glancing up to the ceiling, and Jason feels very confused for a second there.
But then it hits him: she is talking about the Watchtower. She is implying the League.
Jason doesn't hold back a quiet curse, "Damn it, I should have hidden the guns better, shouldn't I?"
Jazz laughs softly, but it's a warm, affectionate laugh, "Well, yes, but you also shouldn't leave bloody bandages in the bathroom. And your helmet on the kitchen counter," she tells him, amusement lacing her voice, and Jason rubs his face with his free hand.
"Fuck," he mutters. And then, "Sorry."
Jazz waves her hand it the air, brushing his apology off, "Don't worry. I'm not in a place to blame you for having secrets, am I?" She muses, and, okay, fair. But before Jason can try to make her elaborate on the topic, she returns to her previous question, "So is it for a friend?"
The knife, right. Jason makes an annoyed face, scrunching his nose.
"Yeah. Bruce owes someone a favor, but he couldn't make it. Other stuff came up," he huffs. 'Other stuff' in question includes some off-world mission, so he really couldn't make it, but that doesn't make Jason any less mad about it.
"Let me guess, that 'someone' smells of cigarettes and liquor, has a British accent, and wears a trench coat," Jazz deadpans, and Jason stares at her with wide eyes.
"How- Are you sure you're not secretly a mind reader?" He asks. He knows for sure that Jazz doesn't have a meta-gene, but maybe she is a magic user? That would explain why and how she is even at the auction. Yet, the redhead laughs.
"No, sorry. Just met him a few times," she winces like she can smell the phantom smell of tobacco even when the mage is not here, "Can't say I like him, but asking someone to fetch him a Tecpatl seems like his style."
That only makes Jason even more inclined to believe his girlfriend is actually a magic user. But he doesn't get to ask because Jazz suddenly looks him in the face.
"Consider yourself in luck, by the way," she grins, "You won't have to steal it."

DP X DC PROMPT BECAUSE FUCK SLEEPING I DON’T NEED OXYGEN
It’s a hard summoning. A horrible summoning. The very worst Constantine’s ever been part of, he was expecting a rough ride with an entity of this power but surely this is excessive?
The Ghost King has been known to accept deals for centuries, and yeah the terms are shit but the world is full on ending and the Justice League are out of better options
When the magic lashes out and takes Doctor Fate to his knees, he begins to doubt what they’re doing
Is this really the better option? Really? Sure, Pariah will take the souls of all their enemies into his army for conquest, but if it costs everyone anyway…
**
Danny wrapped arms, legs, and teeth around the telephone pole in Amity Park, growling against the pull
Of COURSE this had to happen three days after he made a joke about “being the only entity John Constantine hasn’t tried to sell his soul to” to Clockwork
He’s not fucking losing the bet about making it to the end of the week
#dp x dc#dpxdc#dc x dp#dcxdp#dpxdc prompt#justice league dark: ho boy this is the hardest summoning ever the magic is going totally crazy the ghost king is so powerful!!!!#danny (feral gremlin): NOPE NOPE NOPE I AM NOT BUYING CLOCKY NASTY BURGER FOR A MONTH IT IS A MATTER OF PRIDE

Thinking of how the Titan showed Luz the first glyph, Light, because she was kind to his son and listened to him, made him feel like his interests mattered when so many others overlooked the little guy and didn’t care about people like him. He didn’t force Luz to painstakingly find it on her own, as Philip did; The Titan freely gave this to her.
Then the second glyph, Ice, comes when Luz takes the moment to listen to the Titan; To say that she’ll learn on his terms, she’ll respect his body and work with him. Luz paid attention to the unheard son, and now the parent, speaking with and not for him as Philip did.
She gets the Plant glyph afterwards by continuing to follow that principle and give his son fun and company...
And the final glyph, Fire? Wing it like Witches is a major epiphany for Luz’s development, where it really hits her that she can’t drag her friends around in her attempts to play out certain beloved tropes and story beats she grew up on; In particular, this episode was about her desire to be the underdog hero, dragging Willow into relatively high-stakes consequences for a Grudgby match she did not ask for.
Sound familiar? I wonder if the Titan was low key afraid of Luz following in Philip’s steps, recognized that similar hero complex... Even if Luz was nowhere near as evil as Belos, well. Philip started off from somewhere, he didn’t begin as a genocidal dictator with countless sins to his name, he built his way up. Maybe the Titan is just being paranoid, Luz is so young after all! But in the end, he hid one final glyph from Philip because of his need for control, and it was admittedly Luz who jeopardized this precaution by giving Philip the Light spell.
Yet in Wing it like Witches, Luz really matures when she steps up and takes responsibility for her recklessness, for subsuming Willow’s problem and low key making it about herself, and what she decides for the group. Luz takes the full consequences of the stakes she set up so neither Willow nor Gus have to, and it’s this mature gesture of self-awareness that prompts them to reciprocate and forgive Luz.
So I wonder if THAT moment was what solidified to the Titan that yes, I really can trust this child. This human, the first after centuries of another who has been desecrating my corpse, bastardizing my name; She truly didn’t know any better, and meant well, teaching Philip the Titan’s last glyph. The first few glyphs were like little gifts, but giving Luz the last one meant she had full access to all of the Titan’s magic, so long as she experimented with glyph combos. And the Titan felt safe to entrust her with something he barred from Philip, because why?
Because Luz got over that fatal flaw of Philip’s; The desire to be the hero at any cost. That proved she wouldn’t follow in his footsteps, she diverged at a crucial point, and it meant she’d never become another Belos. They both worked and studied for the glyphs, but what mattered was the compassion that Luz had, and it was her kindness that began her discovery of glyphs. The Titan could trust his final glyph to her, Fire... But as he’d find out, it wasn’t even his final gift to Luz, either.
There really is this recurring arc of hesitancy from the Titan; Someone who was used, betrayed, and taken advantage of. And knew how easy it was for the same to happen to his son. So to see the little ways in which he opens up, recognizes Luz’s kindness and maturity and responds to each step in her growth... It’s like someone learning to trust again, realizing they’ve really found a friend after all. It’s no wonder Luz is treated like an old friend by the Titan, because she is one, and it makes his final gift and farewell to her all the more impactful.
On a lighter note! I’m just imagining the Titan figuring out how to show Luz the Fire glyph, after deciding he’ll do just that. I keep thinking of him watching Luz in the Grudgby game, cheering her on and giving Luz support by illuminating his last glyph in Boscha’s fire; “Here kid, take this!” It’s such a relatively casual and silly moment too, because the Titan isn’t obsessed with the theatrics and drama of godhood.

Costly Gift
WHUMPTOBER DAY 7: prompt: Magic with a cost/only for emergencies
⛤⋅•⋅⊰∙∘☽⛧☾∘∙⊱⋅•⋅⛤
Word count: 1.1k
warnings: Blood and injuries
MASTERLIST ⛤ WHUMPTOBER 2024
⛤⋅•⋅⊰∙∘☽⛧☾∘∙⊱⋅•⋅⛤
One of the many things that made you special was your powers. There was no doubt about that. Your special ability that made you unique. The ability to heal others. It was a lifesaver when it came to your line of work. Being a vigilante was no easy task. Even a small job would leave the people involved battered and bruised, scraped and scarred. And you could heal them with a touch of a hand.
But it came with a cost.
Every time you healed a bruise, or made scarred skin smooth, you would absorb the injury yourself. And you would heal quicker. Sure. But they still hurt nonetheless. Sometimes you would end up with four or five times as many injuries compared to everyone else because you had swapped their pain out for yours. They didn’t know about this of course. You didn’t tell them because you didn’t want to seem weak. Because you knew that they would have shut you down the moment they realised that you were hurting yourself in order to help them. You didn't tell them because you wanted to do something useful.
The night was busy. You were darting to and from your team, healing their wounds before darting off to help the next one. Your body would slowly heal itself as you moved, so the minor bruises would be gone within ten minutes or so. It wasn’t such gruelling work, and the wounds were only small. A cut here or a nasty sprain there. That was until you heard the shrill cry from across the rooftop and were dashing across it as fast as your feet could carry you.
Damian was slumped awkwardly in Tim’s arms as he stumbled, blood pouring from the wound in his leg. He was struggling to stand, or put any weight on his injured leg at all so Tim had taken to awkwardly trying to support him. To their left lay the offending criminal, bloody knife still clutched in his hand from where he was sprawled out on the floor. Damian groaned in pain as his wound continued to seep with sticky blood. Tim pulled him away from the fighting, easing him to the ground. You skidded to your knees beside him and Tim looked at you worried.
“He needs you.” He said desperately. You wasted no time taking his injured leg between your hands and channel your magic, feeling it sizzle through your veins and tingle in your fingertips before it began to stitch his skin closed. You felt the sting of the wound opening on your thigh almost instantly, but you did well to mask your pain. As soon as it was done, Damian thanked you and rushed off with Tim ready to continue the fight. When you stood, you took a moment to gain your bearings before taking an experimental step forwards. The wound was deep and hurt like a bitch. But you would have to make do.
You gained a couple more nasty injuries during the fight. It was certainly one of the most brutal patrols you had seen in a while. You had gained a large cut that you had taken away from Dick which ran across your ribs, and a nastily sprained ankle from Tim. You had a definite limp that you struggled to hide as you made your way back to the cave. You felt faint, likely from the blood loss that was making your suit sticky. Your body was healing itself slowly, but the sheer amount of injuries just seemed like too much for your body to handle at once.
You stumbled on your feet as you clambered out of the batmobile, moving as quickly as you could so that you could get away from your team. You couldn't wait to just collapse on your bed. You were so exhausted and all of your energy was being focused on hiding your secret. But your suffering didn’t go unnoticed by your team. Tim frowned as he watched you hobble away. He had keen, observant eyes and he noticed your limp almost instantly.
“You alright?” He asked, catching up to you quickly. “You’re limping.”
“Oh….yeah.” You lied quickly, trying to hide the strain in your voice. “There's a stone in my shoe.”
“Bullshit” Tim said, calling you out though he was clearly very worried about you. He was watching the way sweat broke out on your forehead, and it seemed like you were struggling to remember how to put one foot in front of the other. “I think you need to sit down….”
“I’m fine.” you choked out. But your legs failed you, and you wavered on your feet.
Tim placed a hand on your arm to steady you. “Woah. Woah–” he lead you over to the chairs, worried that you were going to pass out.
“What’s going on?” Jason, who had rushed over, asked.
“Something is wrong.” Tim said. But you hardly heard him. You were too focused on not passing out.
There was a tap on the side of your face. “Hey. did you hear me?”
You blinked. “Hm…?
“I said, are you hurt?” Jason repeated his question.
“I don’t get hurt.” You mumbled. You didn’t know it, but there was a slight slur to your words. The two boys shared a glance.
“Where is it?” Jason questioned you, giving you a close once over before he found the blood seeping into your suit. He cut the fabric away quickly, revealing the cut on your leg. Tim frowned. It looked awfully familiar….
“Is that…..is that Damian’s wound…?” He said, looking at the healing flesh.
Jason then found the one on your ribs. “Dick was hurt here too….” he muttered.
You made some sort of noise of acknowledgement. And then Tim clocked it…
“Kid….when you heal our wounds…..do they transfer to you instead.”
You had answered before you even realised you were telling them something you had told yourself you wouldn't. “mmhm…yeah .”
The four of them were instantly hit with a sense of guilt and fear. How many times had they hurt you?
“All of them….?” Damian swallowed
“...uh-huh…it's okay though…”you said, watching your skin knit itself back together “i heal fast…”
“Oh sweetheart….its not okay. You’ve been hurting yourself to help us and we had no idea. We’ve been asking you to heal all sorts…..”
“I don’t mind….. Im being useful. Helping. Its the only thing that makes me useful to the team.”
Dick frowned deeply at that, smoothing a hand over your hair. “Oh sweetness, you're a valued part of the team. Powers or not we need you.”
“You do?”
“Of course we do, kid. You’re one of the best fighters we've got.”
You smiled a little, a warm sense of validation swelled inside you. “Oh…”
“Now how about we see about getting that patched up, hm? And I don’t want any of that ‘i can heal on my own’ crap, okay? Let us heal you for once.”

Tech Support
I haven't participated in a @steddiemicrofic challenge since February, but I have missed them! Here's the August prompt plug at 437 words with a T rating.
"It's broken," Eddie repeated. "I know you think you're suddenly some kind of tech expert, but my amp won't magically turn on."
Steve sighed. "Dude, I literally sell computers. No expert, but I'm sure I could figure something out with it."
"It's dead as a doorknob," Eddie said. He cocked his head to the side. "Where does that expression come from anyway? Doorknobs were never alive."
"You're getting distracted."
Eddie stuck his tongue out. "Look, it's old. I'm lucky it's lasted this long. I've been slowly saving up because it was only a matter of time."
"Just let me look." Steve let out a long-suffered sigh. "If it is dead, what would it hurt?"
Eddie didn't hesitate at all as he said, "My pride."
Steve snorted. "Is your pride worth the cost of a new amp? And a canceled show tomorrow because you'll never get a new one that fast?"
Eddie shrugged. "Probably not." He slowly stepped aside. "Fine, oh wise tech guy! Fix my amp."
As Steve walked around him, Eddie muttered, "This should be good," but Steve staunchly ignored him. He was used to Eddie's dramatics.
Steve stood over the amp as he considered his options. He didn't know enough about the hardware to try and peel away panels or yank at the internal mechanisms. Eddie had been right that a little basic computer repair didn't come close to understanding how complicated musical equipment worked. Still, the computer had to be the more complex of the two, right? It didn't hurt anything but his own pride if he couldn't figure it out.
That little pep talk handled, Steve knelt next to the amp. He considered it for a moment, studying the knobs on the front before feeling around for any hidden buttons. His fingers wrapped around something at the back, and Steve paused.
He turned back to where Eddie had leaned against the wall for a smoke break. "Solved your problem."
Eddie waved his cigarette before dropping it. "Doesn't look like it's on to me. You didn't fix it just because you declared that you fixed it."
"No," Steve agreed, "but I bet it turns on when I plug this in."
Eddie gaped as he wiggled the cord back and forth. "You're shitting me!"
Steve laughed as he moved through the steps Eddie had forgotten, grinning at the hum of amp and speaker crackling to life together. "Sorry, babe. Sometimes it just takes an expert."
Eddie glared, even as he moved forward to wrap his arms around Steve. "Smart ass." He pressed a quick kiss to Steve's nose, an apology or thanks Steve didn't know.

DP x DC Prompt/notion #1
Danny is summoned by some superheroes. Maybe by accident or maybe they didn't know what they were doing but they don't really know who he is (or that he's the ghost king)
Danny isn't entirely honest about his powers or who he is for reasons and the Justice League mostly just classify him as an average power level teen hero and sign him up for the teen titans (or young justice, whichever).
After hanging out with the younger heroes for a bit, Danny gives them his summoning spell because it's the most reliable way to get ahold of him.
Danny's summing spell has very specific requirements (as is the norm) but after a while one of the other heroes gets annoyed at having to go through the whole process every time they need Danny (maybe Danny is going back and forth between Amity and the hero team and they have to summon him every few days?) Specifically, I'm picturing Red Robin. So he decides there has to be a better way.
There's a big battle and Danny isn't there. The teen heroes all have a pretty good idea by this point that Danny is more powerful than the Justice League knows. They're dodging explosions and flying debris and one of them shouts to Tim that they need to summon Danny, does he have the supplies?!
"Download the app!" Tim shouts back.
"App?!" they respond "What app?!"
"The app I made to summon Phantom, it's in our secure sever."
"That can't possibly work?! The summoning needs a circle drawn while chanting the spell!"
"The image of the circle is loaded on the screen and the spell plays via a recorded audio file. It actually works better because there's no way to mess up the incantation or the circle requirements since the app does it all!"
"You need 7 candles of pure beeswax!"
"That part's just about not being cheap with the lighting! That phone costs over a thousand dollars and has a backlit LCD screen with the highest resolution available. It exceeds the requirements."
"What about the blood?"
"There's blood inside your hand, your hand is holding the phone. It works fine. "
Naturally the app works and Danny shows up to help save the day.
I'm picturing one of the Justice League's bigger magic users (Constantine? Zatanna?) finding out about the app and they want to see it. This ultimately leads to them getting details on the summoning spell (presumably with some shenanigans along the way if the younger heroes know the secret and are helping Danny hide it) and finding out Danny is the ghost king.

Wind/Air Magic with a price:
Whumpee gets extreme vertigo after they use their magic
No air can enter Whumpee's lungs while using their magic, and so they can only use the magic for as long as they can hold their breath before passing out
Hyper/hypoventilation as a side effect of using magic
Lowered air pressure causing Whumpee's eardrums to rupture
Hypoxia as a side effect of using magic
One trope I like a lot in whump is magic with a price, so here’s a few ideas :
Ice magic that causes the whumpee frostbites and hypothermia
Nature magic that grows inside the whumpee, and like with concrete, the plants have to pierce whumpee’s skin in order to be used
Shapeshifter whumpee who has to relearn how to talk, walk and act properly when they turn into a non-human creature for too long
Whumpee going blind after using light magic too often
Nerve damage and burns caused by electrical magic, maybe there’s even a risk for whumpee to be electrocuted
Whumpee has water magic abilities, except it’s salt water so it damages the skin progressively (Effective only in long term, unless you want your whumpee to have an allergic reaction)
Pretty basic as an idea but fire magic that burn whumpee’s body as they use them
Whumpee can take control of someone’s mind, but they can’t move while they’re controlling them, leaving their body vulnerable…
Whumpee with death magic, everything they touch dies no matter what. Everyone is scared of them and they are always alone
On the other hand, whumpee with life magic. They can revive anything they touch, but loose years of their lifespan every time they do so they have to be very careful who and what they touch
Similar idea, whumpee with healing magic but the wounds appear on them once the other person is healed
Honestly, the only magic ability that doesn’t look like it can have a price is Wind…
#i love thinking up magic side effects#literally half the magic system in one of my wips is about the side effects#magic with a price is my favorite fantasy whump trope#and that's saying something#whump#whump prompts#whump ideas#magic whump#fantasy whump#magic with a price#magic with a cost#elemental magic

Dc X DP prompt/story idea
So Danny has teamed up with different Captain Marvels over the years (either via clockwork shenanigans, or the Dp universe is simply older then DC) and Billy has memorys of this badass Ghost coming to help his predecessors out of tight spots.
Billy brings him up offhandedly in a JL meeting and jokingly calls Danny his dad. (Oh that reminds me of when Phantom went all dad mode and stopped this powerful mage from killing me a few hundred years ago)
The JL finds some ancient pots or writings describing Phantom as a benevolent god. They connect the dots.
A demigod calling a being described as a god their father? Checks out.
The league really needs help with something or someone world ending (probably darkseid) and they are out of all options so they tell Marvel to call his dad. Even Bruce and Constantine are onboard because a being described as benevolent that is apparently one of the most powerful leaders dad is certainly the safest option then whatever else they have at the moment.
Billy internally freaks out and tells them he needs to go to the Rock of Eternity to call him because he lives in a another dimension/universe and it’s just safer contact him there. Billy books it to the rock sifting through memorys, spell books, and desperately asking Shazam for help because none of his predecessors ever contacted Danny he just showed up.
Billy eventually finds something to summon Danny and does so, not before getting some food as offering of course. Danny shows up either and a adult or a Elterich being because it’s just easier to have adults respect you when you look like that rather then a 14 year old.
When Danny sees Billy he’s instantly like ‘is that a 12 year old!?’ Because his powers as the ghost king and or being considered an ancient let’s him see through the magic that is Caption Marvels form. Billy tells Danny about the situation and Danny is concerned.
Depending on how the writer wants the fic to go Danny’s reaction would probably be either ‘I must help him at all costs because he’s like I was after the accident’ or ‘he’s way to young to be fighting such powerful beings, who do I give a piece of my mind to!’
It could easily be either Danny adopting Billy, or Danny and Billy becoming close friends that pretend to be father and son to mess with the JL and JLD
