You have an unexpected extra day off work or school!  What are you going to do? Oh easy. I’m reading about 10-12 tabs of fanfics in bed, coffee with my favorite vanilla creamer in a metallic tumbler so that it keeps hot for hours.

What is your favorite way to spend a summer day?  let's go sit by the ocean and soak up some ☀️ . Or walk around the park with boba?

What is your favorite way to spend a winter day? See the unexpected day off question! Though knowing me, I'll get antsy and need to move around eventually, so I'll find some kind of organization project.

What do you do to unwind at the end of the day? Cook dinner, catch up with my fam about their days, try to find something fun to watch on TV while simultaneously hanging out here or on Discord :)

Do you play any sports?  I don’t - have always had too much anxiety about disappointing my team! 

Other than fanfic, what is your favorite genre to read?  Always has been and always will be romance. I like to audiobook pop-culture and history books too.

What is your comfort movie/tv show? It used to be The Office & Schitts Creek, but I’m kind of looking for a new comfort show (any recs?)… there’s always (thankfully) Shameless I suppose!

Do you write or draw? I write fanfic (which still surprises me to say out loud), and I’ve been trying to learn to draw. I bought some workbooks and everything :) Lately, my Insta algorithm’s been feeding me calligraphy videos and I’m really obsessed with them.

What other arts or crafts do you do? I like to knit, crochet and needlepoint. 

Describe your perfect breakfast: This is something my grandmother used to make for me, and it’s still to this day my #1 favorite comfort food: buckwheat, heated up with milk and sugar.

11. if you're a writer or artist, what fic or piece of art are you proud of making?

Wow, this question is mean. Who would ask someone this????

And who the fuck let me put two hundred and fifty nine works on AO3?

Podfics first: It's gotta be Going Platinum by @cricketnationrise. It's by FAR the longest solo project I've done (I think there's one posted podfic and one work in progress that I might have more audio minutes on, both as a narrator for a multi-voice project, but I didn't have to edit that shit so it's not my problem 🤣) and for some batshit insane reason I decided to do soundscaping/sound effects for the first time??? But I LOVED how it came out, and I was exceptionally proud of myself for keeping it a secret from cricket because that was HARD. (And yes I WILL be recording parts two and three!)

Schitt's Creek fic: Time until the end of time, the afterlife fic @ships-to-sail and I co-wrote over TWO YEARS and, not to toot our own horns, but the fandom at large slept on it 😅 It's amazing, actually.

RWRB fic: This one's brutal. It's almost Much Ado, and idk maybe it should be Much Ado, but I actually think it's Like loving the stars themselves aka the Doctor Who AU. Also a little bit slept on, actually, but not to the same extent as above 🤣 I am phenomenally proud of this one. The genre was way outside my usual comfort zone and I think this fic is the best example of the way I love to write media AUs -- the story bent to fit the characters, so it's very much an Alex And Henry Story, but there are little pieces of DW canon, RWRB canon, and something that's entirely my own.

16. a tiny detail in canon that you want more people to appreciate

There are so many, honestly, but Alex's slightly hysterical thought about wanting to send whoever taught Henry to suck cock a gift basket is so, so fucking important to me for an array of Overthinking/Over-identifying Reasons. Also it's just funny as hell. I was very proud of getting a different version of it into chapter two of the arranged marriage AU, actually; I think that bit in particular is one of the funnier things I've written.

The one owned by terf queen mcgee. That was bb!MJ's first exposure to fanfiction and where I started writing fic.

certain songs (aka, indie band patrick): David, owner of the recently re-opened Perennial gallery in New York gets dragged by Stevie to a show where the indie band the Creek Waders are performing. He crosses paths with the frontman and guitarist, Patrick, and finds himself intrigued. Mutual pining, David being an idiot, discussions about queer art, Stevie ex machina, etc etc.

gather up the avenues: David and Patrick dated while in New York but broke up, now neither of them can stand to be in the city because of all the memories. Patrick drives back home to Canada, but ends up stopping in a small town with a ridiculous sign, while David flees to the place with the stupid name his dad bought him for his birthday when he was a kid. I think you can see where this is going.

come on, get higher, loosen my lips: five times alex and henry talk on the phone and one time they wake up together (workshopping this description lol). Actually hoping to finish and publish this in 2023 but we'll see how it goes.

I have a lot of other projects I'd like to finish but I'm not going to list them all here. We'll see how this year goes. I also love an event (clearly) so plan to participate in some of those as they come up (hopefully for both SC and RWRB).

There's definitely no one way to display a cross stitch, but if you don't do anything with it and just leave it as is, the edges will start to fray, so it's probably a good idea to do something.

I washed and ironed the piece before I mailed it, but if it got wrinkled in transit, you can get it damp, flip it over, and iron the back of it on low to get the wrinkles out. You don't want to iron directly on the front of the stitches, so only iron the back side. The thread is color fast so you don't need to worry about getting it wet, it will be fine and the colors won't run.

As for how to display it, there are lots of different options. The way I usually go with for the ones I display is to just stick it in a frame. I think that's probably the best way to keep it protected and keep it from getting dirty. Usually I will also buy some adhesive mounting board like this. You can cut the mounting board to the size of the frame, stick the cross stitch on it and then pop it into the frame! That's what I did for all of these:

I use variations on this technique for framing as I think it's the easiest, but there are actually lots of different ways people do it, just google "how to frame cross stitch" if you want some different options!

My other favorite way to finish a project for display is to have my aunt turn it into a pillow (I can cross stitch but I'm not great with a sewing machine, so I have to go to my aunt for this part). This is what she did with a Schitt's Creek project I finished a few years ago:

There are other ways to finish a project for display, including sticking it in an embroidery hoop and covering the back (or not, that's not necessarily required if you don't mind the back showing). I did that for my cross stitch ornaments that I made for my Lone Star tree. I just put them in these little hoops and glued some felt onto the back.

This youtube video shows a fairly simple way of doing this, and again there are a million different ways people do it, so you can google for different options!

buckle up, friends, because I somehow posted 98 gif sets this year and it's probably going to be 100 sets by the end of the year tbh. that number sounds so ridiculous. it's all your faults because part of the reason why I made so much was because I felt so encouraged and loved by the people I've gotten to know and know better this year, so thank you.

I started trying to put all the sets in a post and that just got overwhelming for me to look at so we're doing my top favorites with some fun statistics at the end. I think it'll come as no surprise that I mostly made rwrb and heartstopper sets this year, so I decided to do my top 5 rwrb sets, top 5 heartstopper sets, and top 10 miscellaneous sets.

top 5 rwrb sets

page to screen ripped pages: this is the first set I made after the movie was released. I worked on it for hours and really enjoy how it turned out. the text placement was what took the longest. I knew what words from each passage I wanted to highlight so it took some rearranging to make sure those were visible.

acd x all american bitch: the idea for this came about when casey posted an instagram story of GUTS and songs that correspond with their characters. I love me some bi coloring, so using that for this set was really fun!

firstprince x wildest dreams: I don't know what it is about this set that makes me love it so much. I think it's the shade of pink and then the light orange from the text.

henry "that is him, part and parcel": I adore henry and bea and that's all I have to say about this set.

firstprince x exile: I have thoroughly enjoyed reading the tags for this one and I am not sorry at all for the pain I have caused. I got the idea for this set after sending @kiwiana-writes the fake fic title "I gave so many signs" and they wrote a heartwrenching summary. I immediately wanted to do something with it!

top 5 heartstopper sets

moments of healing: day two of heartstoppercentral's pride celebration for this year. putting this together made me really emotional. I'm so grateful for alice and these moments of communication we get on the show.

imogen x ballad of a homeschooled girl: yes, I did intentionally use colors on the lesbian flag for this set. it was actually going to be purple at first to match the GUTS album but I didn't like how it looked. I tried pink, liked it, wondered what color worked with pink, and thus the color palette was born!

narlie x brighter than sunshine: day 3 of heartstoppercentral's pride celebration. as schitt's creek fans know (and as a couple people pointed out in the tags), this is the song that plays at the end of "Meet the Parents." I think I knew right away I was going to use this song for this day of the event.

narlie x fearless (taylor's version): I still can't believe I made this set. it's something just last year I would have deemed too complicated. I'm proud of myself for this one.

charlie standing up to ben: this set idea was suggested by @swiftlythebest. idk if this was intentional on alice's part, but I really enjoy how charlie says similar sentiments in both episodes. like "leave me alone" -> "I don't want to see you ever again."

top 10 miscellaneous sets

alexis rose + "destined to be on fire": I can't believe how much I've grown as a gif maker over the past three years and this set shows that growth. I also adore alexis and her journey.

david/patrick open mic: I made this set once I got back home from seeing noah in concert. I was truly close to tears during the concert when I realized I was watching him perform a song from a show I have loved for three years.

david/patrick relationship dynamic: @reasonandfaithinharmony @roseapothecary and @rmd-writes are to thank for this set coming into existence. the fact that I had so many scenes to choose from shows that this truly is david and patrick's dynamic.

schitt's creek + barbie posters: I knew right away what kind of barbie david and alexis were going to be.

GUTS + favorite lyrics: god I really love this set. the typography? the coloring? I really outdid myself.

the good witch + ages: another set I just absolutely adore. I love the shades of pink I used. also, maisie, thank you for including consecutive years in the album because it really would have bugged me if they weren't lol

danandphilgames + fuck land: my url becomes relevant again! if you told me at the start of this year that the gaming channel would be back, I would not have believed you.

calliette x love affair: I really love the overlays for this one. it just ended up working well on its own with little manipulation from me. the song is from the end of the last episode. it worked great for the antagonists event!

ellie x you're on your own, kid: I had this idea for a few weeks before I actually got around to making it. I remember being worried and surprised that no one else that I saw did a set with this song.

vampire by olivia rodrigo: the lyric "bloodsucker, fame fucker" really did something to me.

PLACID PLASTIC DUCK SIMULATOR - Probably one of my bigger hyperfixations, I am a HUGE fan of the series. To the point the Developers my beloved ADDED ME TO THE "THANK YOU" SECTION OF THEIR GAME!!! I'M LISTED THERE!!!! THANK YOU DUCK DEVS <333 Anyways, I am a MASSIVE supporter and enjoyer, and I play any of their games! I cannot wait for Placid Plastic Duck - A Quiet Quest and also Slowly Sliding Ducks. ACE ATTORNEY - Becomes a hyperfixation every few months. You will know it happens when my entire theme changes to Godot and I spend every hour I am awake and should be asleep talking about it and / or reblogging posts about it and / or playing the games and / or watching the show AGAIN !!!

BUGSNAX - Probably THE biggest fixation I have ever had, took place the entirety of 2021. Pulled me out of the worst depression I've had in my life, made me start drawing again and I have over a dozen grumpus ocs. It's what made me comfortable enough to create headcanons and fan characters again. Holds a special place in my heart.

INFINITY TRAIN - My all time favorite show !!! I have ocs regarding this series and I rewatch it pretty frequently. It means a lot to me, I hold it in a special place in my heart :)

MOOMIN VALLEY - A series I enjoy a ton, there will be certain days I will focus entirely on this silly series I love it <3

ALL SAINTS STREET - Another series I enjoy a ton! I talk about it every so often but it's something I mostly keep to myself.

CULT OF THE LAMB - One of my current bigger obsessions, I actively desire to have the time to draw my lamb and all the silly followers I have. I reblog a LOT of fanart of this game, beware.

REGRETEVATOR - The biggest obsession I have at the moment, I draw my character Dizzy & canon characters whenever I can and you can find posts of them on my art account! Currently drawing a lot of Regretevator ocs on Art Fight :D

This Passions & Pastimes fic used my prompt!

Patrick doesn't really have an eye for art; he doesn't pay much attention to painting or sculptures. But he likes photography. Particularly, a black-and-white film photographer from New York. He doesn't remember how or where he'd come across the prints, but Patrick had been captivated by the first one he laid eyes on. Can you see the artist through their art? Can you fall in love with the photographer by only knowing their photos? However, two or so years ago, the mysterious artist known only as D.R. [subject to change at author's discretion] disappeared from the world. The Instagram page left without update, the subreddit full of speculation and rumors. Patrick can't say he isn't more than disappointed. Until one day, when he's walking through his new town and something catches his eye. The tone, the light-- he'd know an original DR photo anywhere. "Oh, this?" Twyla grinned, pointing to the frame on the restaurant wall. "David gave me that."

Weekend WIP Game

Thank you for tagging me, @rmd-writes and @thisbuildinghasfeelings!

I know I am very late to this, but it is still technically the weekend here in the Pacific time zone, so here we go. I'll be using the questions for Artists/GIF makers. (There are also questions for writers in @welcometololaland's original post!)

Rules: List your WIPs below (if you only work on one project at a time, feel free to include future WIPs/ideas!) then answer the following questions. Then, tag as many people as you have WIPs (or more).

1. WIP List:

I am so afraid to see these all written out in a way where I can count them. [deep breath] This is a rather mixed-up list of gif sets for 911 Lone Star, Schitt's Creek, and The X-Files. Also, since they're gif sets, they don't really have titles, just nicknames:

2. Which WIP is your most complex?

Oh gosh. Anything that involves coloring of more than one scene, really. That's what slows me down. And pretty much all of these fall into that category. Which is a big part of why they're not done yet.

3. Do any of your WIPs involve you using a technique/style that you haven't used before? What inspired you to try it?

Um. Possibly? I'm not far enough along to know for sure, but I think a couple of them might involve trying out a new text treatment.

4. Which WIP do you expect will take you the longest?

I am historically a very bad judge of this. Lol. There are plenty of potential obstacles in that list. I'm afraid to jinx it/make things worse by saying anything specific.

5. Which WIP are you finding the most enjoyable to create?

The "lizard arc" set has been very enjoyable to play with. And I suspect that "he's a jungle cat" will be very fun to eventually get back to.

6. Do you have a favourite character to draw/stitch/paint/depict? Are they in many of your WIP projects?

Hmmm. Not really. I mean, I certainly tend to focus on my favorite ships, but I can't really pick a favorite from that group.

7. Which WIP do you experience the most self-doubt about. Why?

All of them. Because I am self-taught and constantly second guessing absolutely everything.

8. Have any of your WIPs been struck by the curse of creator's block?

I suppose so. Although It's more lack of energy or just… utter frustration that results in a WIP getting a time out.

9. Do any of your WIPs contain characters outside the main ship? How are you finding creating those?

Yeah, definitely. There are a couple on that list that focus on other relationships.

10. What emotions are you hoping to convey through your WIPs?

It varies. Some are angsty. Some are meant to be funny. But I think, in general, they are all trying to convey love.

11. Are there any features/details you are finding challenging in your WIPs?

[gestures wildly at the lighting teams on every show, thwarting my best efforts to see what's going on]

12. Which WIP has the most complex shading/colouring?

Don't know yet. All of them. Lol. I can tell you that the "fancy dinner" set has been in time out for months now. Because of lighting and coloring.

13. Which WIP has the most complex background?

Not sure this one applies to me.

14. Which WIP do you have the highest expectations for?

Oh, I really don't know. My opinions here change all the time.

15. Do you dream about any of your WIPs?

I normally do not remember my dreams. But very recently, I dreamt that I had finished one of those sets. I was very disappointed to wake up and realize it wasn't true.

16. Do any of your WIPs have particular complexities that your other art doesn't?

Hmm, I don't think so.

17. Are any of your WIPs commissions?

No, but some of them are friendly requests or things that came about from chatting here on tumblr.

18. Do you have a character that is more difficult to draw/stitch/paint/depict? Are they in many of your WIP projects?

I'm going to go with Patrick Brewer. That boy's face just… goes nuclear bright whenever I try to brighten a scene overall. There are a lot of rather pale characters on that show, but they take pretty well to coloring/brightening. He does not.

19. Tell us one thing we don't know about one or more of your WIPs.

Um. Some items have been on that list for years. They're not abandoned, I promise. I am just not in charge of the creative process.

a fic whose reception was different than expected | i try not to expect much of anything - apart from silently begging for no negativity - so everythingggg surprises me! the one that packed the most punch, though? hush, my darling (don't fear, my darling), my mid-ST3 finale project. i wrote HMD in three straight days, ended up a thousand words beyond my typical cap [to that point], and i skipped a beta entirely - which is a definite rarity. all of this to say, i had even lower expectations about response here. BUT. it turned out to be my biggest hit!

one of my favorite lines | i couldn't dissect this conversation from try and grab the spotlight (a dollop of fame), part of my schitt's creek series, so. here's the entirety:

As Maui adds neat art of Moana to his ink, Alexis’ phone rings. When she slides to answer, she’s bombarded by her brother’s flustered: “You advised my darling niece to seek council from our mother? Do you hate her? Because I’m assuming you must. What possessed you?”

“It’s not like I locked them in a freaking basement with each other! God! Excuse me for hoping they’d bond!” 

“Sweet, naïve Alexis. Your incandescent outlook, while truly admirable, conveniently neglects my early elementary introduction to show business. Second grade? Into the Woods? Remember?”

“Um, David? I was four. So, no. No, I don’t. Maybe you can, like, fill me in on your trauma?”

“My role as Milky White contained no dialogue and exactly six lines of stage direction. And yet, when the house dimmed, Mom had choreographed a tap solo and shifted ‘Hey Diddle Diddle’ into an operatic cadence. Just for me!”

“Okay, yes. It was possibly a smidge too soon to enroll Len in the dojo of Moira Rose. But she’s not scarred, so!” 

“Well, nerves of steel seem to be hereditary.”
