Back in August I decided I'd try to make a Caelus jacket for a con in November, figuring it'd be a reasonable amount of time to give myself as my Lyney cosplay took me four months to make, and that I could just wear a casual cosplay of the character if I didn't finish it in time.

And it's DONE. in ONE MONTH. (I started patterning and mocking up on August 3rd; today is September 3rd) I still have a couple of teeny detail things to do just as finishing touches, but like, if con was tomorrow and I had to wear it, I totally could.

Compare that to all of my Genshin cosplays, most of which took me 6-12 months or more to make just because of burnout/the project being above my skill level. idk how much my skills have grown but one thing I have learned is how to adapt a costume design to something that's more realistic for my current craftsmanship level, which I believe is a skill in its own right. 💪✨

I feel unstoppable and very motivated to start my next cosplay. 🤣 (will almost definitely be one from Wuthering Waves. Still flip-flopping on whether to do Scar or Rover first but at this rate they might both be done in the next year)

Final note: That ribbon hanging from the left sleeve is so silly. Why does it exist?! (The answer is: video game logic.)

1st draft of the wing collar! (or first proper one, anyway- i messed around with some rough draping to get an idea of how to angle things)

to draft this i pretty much just stared at shawl collar patterns and messed around with fabric on my form until i had something i could put on paper. i joined that onto a basic bodice with princess seams pattern & just sort of... guessed about the back collar.

its definitely not where im wanting it, but it taught me a lot! sewing these is very much a trust the process technique, but i think i understand it now?

i think the very first thing i have to adjust is the height of the back collar- i really did just vibe that literally as i was cutting out this mock up (planning on adjusting it as needed) and its way way too high. i think this is the main thing throwing this all off- the collar sits way too tall, which pulls the wings back and the neckline down, which isnt what im going with here. its also causing wrinkles around the curves that i think i should get out by reducing the height.

overall, not a terrible first draft!

(if youre curious, heres what my pattern piece looks like- you can see how i had absolutely NO idea what the back collar was gonna be by how its... not there. just a taped on piece of paper to suggest direction 🙃)

2d and 3d Exploration Drawing with Clay

I did a Workshop today in which I used clay to make marks using a knife to cut into the clay which made marks on the paper

Before I did the marks with clay I drew lines vertically and horizontally onto paper using black marker

I disrupt/ distorted the paper by cutting,folding and scrunching it up which transform the paper into 3d shapes
