Weiss: *angry* That Dolt! Why didn't he defend himself? It's like he wants to get killed!?

Ren: *looking at Weiss* I don't think he doesn't want to defend but more so that he is incapable. We saw how efficient he was at dispatching Grimms.

Weiss: That's why i don't get it! He could go toe-to-toe with a deathstalker! Why is he struggling against Cardin!?

Ren: I don't know why, but he is unable to attack anyone. He said it was against protocol, but what was he talking about?

Pyrrha: Maybe where he trained, they couldn't fight in exhibition match? Maybe he only learned how to fight against grimms?

Weiss: *rolling her eyes* Pyrrha, you saw just as i how good he was at dodging and weaving. He knows how to fight.

Pyrrha: Then... Maybe he is a pacifist?

Ren: *Thinking* Then why did he choose to come to Beacon? Why not just take the huntsman exam?

Pyrrha: Why didn't you? Would have been easier than coming all this way from Mistral.

Ren: I'm not really good when it comes to fighting grimm. I know i still have a lot to learn.

Weiss: *sigh* When he's back, i'll ask him.

Based on an idea @thesillyvivi shared, with a limited color palette twist from me,,

I mentioned this in the work in progress post, but the limited color palette comes from the fact every color is color-picked from the album art of Everywhere At The End Of Time. Been listening to a lot of the early stages as of late, so I used the project as inspiration for the piece ^^ (that also explains why Branwen is so blonde, the album art doesn’t contain red)

Pilot, I know you primarily bully Jaune. But would you mind having a go at Papa Arc talking to the Vacuo mural?

Orion Arc is not a hero, even though his son always thought he was. He’s just a man who loves his family and tries his best to do right by them.

So it’s more than a little strange standing there, in front of a mural of his own son’s face. His boy immortalized and honored in ways Orion could never dream of.

His son looks like a stranger.

“Mr. Branwen thought it might help to talk to ya.” Orion’s hand brushes over the palm prints of countless children, all paying their respect to his boy. “Don’t see much point, ain’t gonna bring you back.”

His son watches him, all quiet confidence and bravery. A true warrior, a hero. Where is his brash anxious son who begged to join the Huntsman Academies? How much of his son did he lose when Jaune finally left home? Somewhere along the way his boy grew into a man and he wasn’t there to help him.

“Your uh…” He clears his throat. “Your mother misses you.” And it sounds pathetic even as he says it. Even in front of a facsimile of his son he can’t say what he needs to.

“She was beside herself when you didn’t come back from Haven.” So was he, even more so than his wife. Orion paced the house for days, worry driving him to throw himself into work, into anything that would take his mind off the attack and the fate of his boy. “We were so relieved to hear from Saph about you and your friends.”

His friends. A group of seven that from all accounts Jaune grew closer to than even his sisters. Orion glances up at the others in the mural. Four of which fell alongside his boy, and the other three were left grieving.

Ren, Nora, and Oscar, he remembers them being called. He never thought he’d see his grief echoed in faces so young.

“As soon as we saw the broadcast, your mother was packin’ our bags.” Orion chuckles. “You shoulda seen her, she was fixin’ to march up to the General herself and teach him a lesson. If I ever wondered where you got your fire, I got my answer.”

His face falls, crumpling like paper. “And I triedta douse that fire.” How many times did he tell Jaune it was okay if he failed? How many times did he refuse to train him? How many times did he let his fear guide him to crush his son’s dreams?

“When you walked into the livin’ room with your transcripts in hand sayin’ you were gonna be a Huntsman whether I wanted it or not, why…” His eyes are stinging. If there’s anything his son inherited from him, it’s his tendency for emotions to live near the surface. “Why that was the proudest day of my life.”

He’d never been more proud. Never. His boy standing there with those papers clutched in his fist, and a defiant look on his face. “I won’t let you down.” Jaune had said.

You could never let me down. It’s what he should’ve said. Why didn’t he just say it?

Orion scrubs the heel of his hand into his eyes. It does nothing to stop the flow of tears. “Did I ever once tell ya how proud I am of you?” His voice is cracking and hitching, but if he stops talking now Orion knows he’ll never start again.

“You’re so brave and you don’t quit when things get tough. I saw how hurt you were after the Fall of Beacon, but you just got right back on that horse.” His baby boy, the most caring and most stubborn of all his children. Strapping the family sword back onto his hip because “Somebody has to, dad.”

Letters where it’s clear his boy isn’t saying half the trouble, but he’s saying enough that they know what trouble is. Hearing about the attack on Haven, a week and a half of terror. Saphron sending word that Jaune made it to Argus.

And then nothing. Nothing until the broadcast from Miss Rose.

Packing in a whirlwind, sending the girls to stay with Saphron. Renting the first available airship to Vacuo and contending with his wife’s motion sickness. By the time they got there, they were met halfway by a near armada.

But no Jaune.

Orion’s hand rests on Jaune’s painted cheek. A child’s hand against the larger-than-life hero his boy grew into when he wasn’t there.

Did he ever tell his son how much he loves him?

“Come back to us,” Orion begs, no longer trying to stem the flow of tears. Why bother? His son isn’t here to see them.

01.10.23: The first part of chapter 2 is now available to play over on itch.io. This includes the Blackwater route only. To access the new content, ensure that you choose to stay in Blackwater rather than leave for Highfell. Saves should work - though I advise you to still keep a save at the end of chapter 1, since any later updates to chapter 2 will require you to play from the start of the chapter again.

Along with the new content, various edits include:

The companions will now introduce themselves with their pronouns, as well as various other characters - Branwen, Mal, Hawkell, etc.

Edited the input process for hunters that use no pronouns. This should help clean up any clunky sentences where the companions talk to/about the hunter as well as allow for the hunter to properly introduce themself with just their name.

A new codex entry on Magic.

Alchemists can now choose to have hand tattoos (though the continuity for this has yet to be fixed).

New content warnings include animal death. This is only in one path, and it is avoidable, relying entirely on the player choosing whether it happens or not.

Going into chapter 2, there are going to be a few inconsistencies to be aware of, mainly when it comes to the combat - I’ve overhauled how it works, as well as made some adjustments to the magic and alchemy specializations. I’ve wanted to keep my primary focus on chapter 2, so I have not gone back in to make the more extensive edits to the earlier fight with the wraith, so please just bear with me for now! It’s on my list of things to do - it will either be the next update, or the one following the Blackwater part 2 update.

There also may be some inconsistencies around Duncan, and the way the characters talk about him. I’ve been working a lot on Duncan to make him a bit more interesting, but again, just like with the combat it’s just not something I’ve gone back to edit in the earlier chapters just yet.

And finally, the codex and character page have not been updated (aside from the Magic entry). There are a few other new codex entries visible, however they are currently empty. The codex as well as the character page have been frustrating me for a while, and I’m trying to figure out exactly what it is I want to do with them... so for the time being, the relationship statuses on the character page are going to be inaccurate, though your displayed top trait should still be accurate. It won’t lock in until chapter 3, but you can get an idea of what you’re trending towards by checking the character page. I still plan to add the hunter’s physical description to that page as well, I know a lot of you have been asking for it, and I promise it’s definitely something I plan to add once I sort those pages out.

Glynda: *sitting in front of Jaune* Jaune, you need to listen to me. Tomorrow, we are going to practice fighting.

Jaune: I understand Miss Goodwitch.

Glynda: No, you don't. You will need to also participate in those training match.

Jaune: I-

Glynda: *cut him off* Against the other students.

Jaune: ... I do not wish to hurt my fellow students. One of my main directive is to protect my partner. As we are in a school, that includes everyone inside said school.

Glynda: *sigh while looking sadly at him* I know Jaune, but you will not arm them, i promise you. I want you to get back at your top capacity and that means you need to train like everyone else.

Jaune: I don't understand.

Glynda: *hugging him* I know Jaune, i know... *Slowly start to cry*

Qrow: *looking at Ozpin* That's fucked up, you know that.

Ozpin: *sigh* I know Qrow, but maybe if he stays with her, his memory might come back little by little?

Qrow: We both know that's not how it works. His soul was ripped to shred! His memory is gone, at least until it heals by itself. Or whatever you said the good doctor told you.

Ozpin: ... She's the only one who can heal him. After all... He's her brother, isn't he? Who should we ask to take care of him?

Qrow: What about the man who turned him into a machine!

Ozpin: And let them take him back!? Glynda would kill both of us and probably the whole of Atlas, Qrow!

Qrow: Tsk... *Drink from his flask* you might be the worst caretaker i ever seen.

Ozpin: *looking at a photo of a Younger Glynda and her little brother* Trust me, i know. I made many mistakes, but taking my eyes out of them might have been the biggest one i ever did...

i do think it’s thematically important that the maidens are inherited in this specific way, it’s not an accident that when the narrative sets down the rules the potential violence is not just remarked upon but given emphasis and used explicitly as justification for the aura transfer machines. nearly everything ozpin does is rooted in keeping the maidens within his control—selecting candidates in anticipation of their deaths, giving the branwens bird forms to identify maidens when the line of inheritance jumps the tracks, chaining the maidens to these vaults, etc—and his greatest adversary in this endeavor is the maidens themselves, because the magic preferentially selecting maiden-killers is, in effect, the magic fighting against this control.

why does the magic transfer itself like this? it will not be controlled. throughout the years ozma and his allies have devoted enormous effort to dictating the Final Thoughts of anyone who receives this power in order to maintain control over it (& their abject failure in this regard leads to the invention of the aura transfer machines); meanwhile the magic binds itself to "random" heirs if the candidate its host has in mind is unsuitable, and prefers to go to ozma’s enemies when it can.

(and do mark that. the person in the maiden’s Final Thoughts is explicitly only a suggestion, one the magic can and will disregard if he or she is unsuitable. ozpin et al believe that these candidates are only rejected if they are 1. male or 2. too old, but none of them can read minds; and as ozpin says, maidens choose themselves. it’s just as likely that there are additional disqualifying criteria, such as the candidate being coerced or just not being spiritually compatible. there’s no reason to think that KILLING A MAIDEN couldn’t be a disqualifying act if the magic were unwilling.)

of note in this regard is that cinder breaks amber’s aura (orange) before using the beetle to draw out the magic (golden):

which matters because the magic is attached to aura and separates at the moment of death; as i said in the last post, the grimm beetle is successful because it respects the magic’s own rules. cinder breaks the outward projection of amber’s soul and then shoots her in the back (symbolically, killing her) and then claims the magic as she begins to die. had she walked up and slit amber’s throat here instead, she would have almost certainly inherited all of the magic too. the grimm beetle thumbs the scales a bit but in the context of the magic’s rules, it’s playing ball.

whereas:

when cinder uses her arm to drain raven’s/penny’s auras, she doesn’t gain any portion of the spring/winter maiden’s magic, nor do either of them suffer lasting harm in the vein of amber (coma) or pietro (holes burned through his aura).

so there’s nothing special about grimm that allows them to violate the magical rules. all evidence suggests that the ATMs don’t work for this purpose either: as soon as amber dies, the magic rips free, and cinder’s grimm arm can harvest aura but not magic. it follows that in the event of a complete aura transfer, the magic would detach from the donor aura as soon as the donor died, leaving the recipient with two souls and no magic. there is a degree of wiggle room (under particular circumstances you can convince the magic to begin separating before the previous maiden is fully dead) but you can’t outright cheat.

which is the whole point. you can’t take a maiden’s magic without killing her and you can’t circumvent the maiden’s agency by stealing the soul of its host. the maidens are unbound by death. and i think there’s a literal causal relationship between how ozma treats the maidens and how they choose their hosts—he can’t use them as weapons without losing them, or outright delivering this magic into salem’s hands. nor can he hoard them or hide them away forever because he can’t dictate their final thoughts.

Pairing: Winter Schnee x Qrow Branwen

Word Count: 1,790

Summary: Winter has been an undercover agent, posing as a member of the Mob, for over two years now. But she’s still shocked, when Raven, the leader of the local Mob, puts a hit out on her own brother, Qrow Branwen.

She knows that Qrow will have to leave town fast, if he wants to avoid sleeping with the fishes. But what she didn’t expect, was how much she would hate to see him go.

hello. I wrote a fic

fandom is RWBY. it's a Raven Branwen centric fic and it's gonna be very angry. lots of hurt and EARNED comfort much later. eventually.

oh also it's post Volume 9 with slight canon divergence bc it doesn't exactly follow the bonus story boarded ending. also whatever isn't canon in there you can pretend was intentional canon divergence instead of mistakes <3 thanks

Due to disability I am going on brief hiatus

Things have been very difficult and my mental health is suffering.

State benefits are still being dodgy, so I am selling all that I own to try and make rent. I am trying to care for my daughter but it’s extremely difficult. My partner is stuck between college and work, and is getting a max of $50 a week total from both.

I am having horrible episodes related to my disabilities and I need to take a break to recuperate and maybe get my life back on track.

If we have formed a friendship on here, I’m going to send you my discord so we can keep talking. You guys are wonderful.

I’m very sorry. I will probably be working on some projects behind-the-scenes in any spare time I have, but I can’t manage this account right now.
