Besna - Krásno
Post-Black Metal from Bratislava, Slovakia
The second long play album Krásno [Beauty] by slovak post-black metal band Besna explores themes of societal stagnation, personal isolation, ecological collapse, and the search for meaning in an unjust world. Through seven intense tracks, it critiques the passive acceptance of authority, the cyclical nature of cynicism, and the desire for self-expression amidst a declining culture and ongoing war. Drawing from mythological references (the song Bezhviezdna obloha [Starless Sky]) and historical events (the song Hranice [Pyres], which reflects on the self-immolation of Jan Palach and the deaths of people fleeing across the borders of communist Czechoslovakia), Krásno highlights the closing off to foreign ideas and lives, urging listeners to fight apathy and despair. The album serves as a powerful reflection on human resilience and a call for cultural and societal renewal.

This is song #2 from the second and final album by the progressive metal supergroup Sons of Apollo.
It released two albums:
Psychotic Symphony (2017)
MMXX (2020)
The band was formed in 2017 with:
Mike Portnoy - drums
Billy Sheehan - bass
Derek Sherinian - keyboards
Jeff Scott Soto - vocals
Ron "Bumblefoot" Thal - guitars
Mmm… Wait! Bumblefoot? (Ha ha. Err…) Was he clumsy? No. He was helping his wife study for her veterinary exams and in the process he learned about this bacterial infection. "The name went from being just the name of an album, to the name of a record label, to a band name, to eventually his name as a solo artist."
My point of interest for this song Wither to Black is that it was based on a riff written by Mr Bumblefoot - initially called Rushgarden - because it sounded like a mixture of Rush and Soundgarden.
[Yes, it does. Plus the vocals reference a 'modern day' in a line! Good to see Rush-inspired great music.]

Chasing Zeniths presents: Yesterday's Outsider
Progressive rock music.
Tumblr media
"Yesterday's Outsider" by Chasing Zeniths is a powerful and evocative progressive symphonic rock song about frustrations one might experience during a breakup, especially if you are the one putting in most of the effort trying to keep the relationship on track.
Chasing Zeniths is the progressive and symphonic rock brainchild of songwriter, composer, and guitarist Carl Kernie.
Tumblr media
Based in Washington State, Carl’s youthful adventures included building high quality furnished snow forts with his younger brother and backpacking the rugged trails of the Cascade Range and Rocky Mountains. After graduating high school at the age of 15, Carl took the opportunity to travel throughout Europe and North America. While living upon such exotic shores as Washington, Colorado, Kansas, Switzerland, and Norway, Carl developed a sincere love of composing music with all the wondrous sounds of modern and traditional instruments and voices.
An avid concert-goer, Carl soon made the acquaintance of fantastically talented musicians, many of whom he now calls friends and several of whom he invited to participate on his debut album Epochs Changing. Some of these collaborators include Timo Somers and Charlotte Wessels, both former members of acclaimed symphonic metal band Delain; Anna Murphy (Eluveitie, Cellar Darling); Vicky Psarakis (The Agonist, Sicksense); and more. Rooted deeply in personal reflection and experiences, Epochs Changing is the result of years of grit and determination to create unique soundscapes that will hopefully inspire others to pursue what is most important to them. When not composing music, Carl is the author of the soon-to-be-released fantasy novel Paper Wings and is currently working on book two in the series.

The collaborators:
World-renowned virtuoso guitarist Timo Somers hails from The Netherlands and has this to say about Chasing Zeniths:
“It's been so cool meeting a young Carl years ago while I was on tour in the USA and now seeing his musical vision come to life and me being a helping hand in that. His music is very intricate and precise. All the layers fit into each other melodically like a big proggy puzzle, which makes for a very big and bombastic whole. I've been very stoked to put down some of the pieces and am excited to see what insanity he comes up with next!”
Providing a rock solid foundation for the music of Chasing Zeniths, Roman Engen hails from Oslo, Norway and has this to say about the project:
"Working with Carl on this album has truly been a unique experience for me. Coming from a jazz, prog, and death metal background, the music was a really fun challenge and gave opportunity for me to play with artists who come from different styles from what I normally play. Carl masterfully crafted each artist's creative talents into a modern prog masterpiece that I'm really proud to be a part of.” - Roman Engen, bassist.

"THE SYMBOLISM CAME FROM THE BOOK OF REVELATION..."
PIC(S) INFO: Spotlight on the original “Sabbath Bloody Sabbath” BLACK SABBATH sleeve art illustrations by Drew Struzan. Color pencil & acrylic on board, 30"x40," c. 1973.
"My concept for this album was based on two color illustrations that were given to me on my confirmation day in 1955, that I still have to this day. They are from the 1700’s and depict an evil man and a good man both at the split second of their death. When I showed them to Drew and explained the idea -- well, these pieces speak for themselves."
-- ERNIE CEFALU (Creative Director)
"I created the album art for “Sabbath Bloody Sabbath” in 1973. The theme was a good man dying and a bad man dying. Yes, I’m the guy in both versions. The symbolism came from the Book of Revelation. The 666 scared parents around the world!"
-- DREW STRUZAN (American artist/illustrator/painter)

Hallowed Tenet - The Evil Creative
Progressive Black Metal from Connecticut, U.S.
Hallowed Tenet is a solo music project created by Christopher Ligocki from Connecticut U.S.A. Official distribution of Hallowed Tenet music did not begin until 2020 even though the name formed back in 2007. Self-proclaimed as "progressive black metal" with blends of "black metal", "doom metal", "death metal", and slight "nu metal" influences, the lyrics primarily (but not always) use metaphors to contrast a mental breakdown with Earth's apocalypse. This album is a re-release of the "The Evil Creative" E.P. that previously contained only three tracks. This album additionally includes two songs previously released as singles, and also includes two new releases "I Will Not Give In" and "Dry Eyes".
1. I Will Not Give In 02:57 2. Sanctuary, Church, and Cult 03:44 3. The Evil Creative 03:33 4. Free from Immortality 03:34 5. Sunflowers, Rainbows, and Unicorns 04:14 6. Pronounced Voodoo 05:41 7. Dry Eyes 03:34
Release date: January 30th, 2025
